elah Sue is coming to Montreal this month, and she’s recruited a rising star as her opener. Polly A is a singer and songwriter who expertly mixes pop beats with R&B elements to create mesmerizing performances. Tickets are on sale now for September 14th at the Corona Theatre in Montreal. Polly A is new to Montreal’s stage, but she isn’t new to the music industry. She shared a bit about her experiences over the past years, as she grew as an artist: “In this business it’s kind of interesting. You’re put into this or that box. This or that. You’re either an artist or you’re a songwriter,” but in actuality, many artists are in fact both—Polly A included. Polly moved to New York to study music, graduated, and recorded an album. “I kind of just fell into songwriting,” Polly said. The industry first labelled her as a songwriter, while her original intentions were to perform her own songs. “A couple of the songs off of that album got the attention of bigger artists,” she said. These songs were rerecorded by well-known artists like Alicia Keys and J. Cole. “It’s definitely a blessing,” Polly said. However, Polly has always focused on her own journey and her own craft in order to create her own legacy: “You’re creating moments for them, but these aren’t necessarily moments for yourself.” Over the last few months, Polly has had the chance to perform at Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, showcasing her own voice alongside her crafty lyrics. One of her recent hits “Fire Burnin” has garnered a lot of attention lately. “It’s a love song. It’s just a pure love song. It’s for people who really believe in love—a love that’s strong and lasting.” Think raw loves lyrics attached to a catchy pop tune with R&B vocals. Polly A explained that she was in a relationship at the time. “I’m not in that relationship anymore, but it serves as a snapshot of that moment, like a photograph of that moment,” she shared. “It’s just a beautiful moment to jump back into when I want.” Love is a theme that flows through Polly A’s entire musical career. Her stage name—Polly A—is a play on polyamory. She redefines the word to describe her open and caring heart. To Polly, her stage name signifies “being open to finding love within all people.” Her aim is to encourage everyone to find a soul connection with each person they meet. To Polly, love finds an infinite number of forms. Lately, Polly has turned extra attention to her craft, spending her days learning piano and writing new lyrics. She hopes to further expand her creativity, and works off of the energy from the loyal following she is gathering. “I think that lots of people think that I am a songwriter who just decided to be an artist one day. That’s a misconception that I’m getting a lot,” she said. “The journey has just been up and down.” Polly A encourages fans and followers to reach out to her via social media as she prepares for tour. T
he 9th edition of the ALS Society of Quebec’s Ride to Fight ALS cycling challenge was an historic success, in terms of both number of participants and money raised. From August 26 to 28, 200 cyclists rode through the streets of Vaudreuil-Dorion and surroundings to support families touched by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and to fund research into the disease. The Ride’s three events—the 3-day challenge, the 1-day challenge, and the Evening of Dreams benefit dinner—raised a combined total of over $430,000 for the cause, a record amount since the event was first held in 2008! The 2016 Ride to Fight ALS brought together hundreds of people touched by the disease, with many participants riding in honour or in memory of a loved one. For the first time this year, three people recently diagnosed with ALS took part in the event, putting faces on the urgent need to find a cure and help families at all stages of the disease. The ALS Society of Quebec would like to thank the event’s key sponsor, TELUS Health, and Château Vaudreuil for its generous hospitality. An Evening of Dreams to honour the Society's Builders On the Saturday evening, the ALS Society of Quebec took the opportunity to honour the Society’s Builders during a benefit dinner attended by close to 400 guests, including Guy Carbonneau, P.J. Stock, Vincent Damphousse, Peter Dalla Riva, and Michael Soles. Comedian Martin Matte, whose father succumbed to ALS, prepared a video message as he was unable to attend. ICI Radio-Canada anchorman Patrice Roy was the evening’s host, and Montréal Canadiens legend Yvon Lambert entertained the guests while raising funds via the live auction. 8

About
www.mtltimes.ca
More commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that attacks the body’s nerve cells, and is usually fatal within five years. As motor neurons are destroyed, persons with ALS lose their ability to walk, speak, swallow, and breathe. They become prisoners within their own bodies. The cause is unknown and there is no effective treatment. The ALS Society of Quebec is a non-profit community organization which provides programs and services to families touched by ALS during all stages of the disease. Promoting, subsidizing, and advancing research on the causes, treatment, and cure of ALS are also integral parts of the mission of the Society, which survives on donations and on proceeds from various fundraising events.
