2012 has been a phenomenal year for RST, we started the year winning Best Rider Apparel Range at the British Dealer News awards. Outlast® technology, originally developed for NASA, utilizes phase change materials (PCM) that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort. Outlast® technology is comparable to ice in a drink; as it changes from solid to liquid, it absorbs heat and cools the drink, keeping that drink at the desired temperature for longer. Outlast® phase change materials work in the same way, but are microencapsulated to be permanently enclosed and protected in a polymer shell. We call microencapsulated phase change materials Thermocules™. This encapsulation process makes the Thermocules™ exceptionally durable for many applications. These Thermocules™ can be incorporated into fabrics and fibers and have the capacity to absorb, store and release excess heat. Riding at nearly 200mph must rank as one of the most extreme jobs in the world, add to this the pressure of a modern day race paddock, the media and... sponsorship duties and the need to maintain an Olympic level of fitness and you start to realize that the life of a racer isn’t as glamorous as it appears on TV. 2011 BSB champion Tommy Hill lets his riding do the talking so RST talks to Tommy about life as a professional motorcycle racer away from the paddock; This Year it’s been harder than ever, and unfortunately more political than ever, especially after winning last season. But behind closed doors there are always some down sides. But I always just try to keep doing what I do and that’s trying to win, and stay at the top of my game. Sponsorship has got harder than ever especially when you try and move forward in your career! This isn’t good for the raw talent, and our sport, but that’s the way it is. But on the flip side, me and a marketing company have been trying to reach audiences outside of the motorcycle industry, which is where we need to get our sport promoted. So Tommy how do you cope with pressure of

being the reigning BSB champion? It’s my job to handle this. You rely on the team you ride with to also keep you calm, especially in tense situations! But I always put an immense amount of pressure on myself, as I want to win, and nothing less. Also with my training, pre race prep, I always need to make sure I am giving 100%. But if I know I have given 100% this does also release the pressure when the light goes green. Many people won’t know that you’re an accomplished carp fisherman, fishing appears to be the polar opposite of bike racing, so what is it about fishing that appeals so much? All this year and since the end of last year, unfortunately I haven’t had the time to go believe it or not, being so busy with PR requirements. I have always liked a bit of fishing though, and aim to get out again soon, when it calms down a little, or does it :). Anyone that follows you on your Twitter or Face-

book won’t fail to notice you’re into cycling; cycling seems to be incredibly fashionable in the BSB paddock, why? The funny thing is when I rode my first year in BSB, I noticed after doing a few rounds that not many riders took there training very seriously. My first year I was training twice a day for 6 days leading up to the season, and made sure I wasn’t only going to be in BSB for one year! I was there to stay! Over the last few years with social networking etc, a lot of riders feel they have the need to promote their training regime, which everyone can see. We are training hard, and possibly other riders see this, and feel guilty so they then feel the need to train. This is our job, and our job is to be 100% fit for racing. What was your back up plan if you didn’t get to the top, and what did you want to be when you were still at school? I wanted to be a pro motorcrosser. I looked up to so many MX riders, and never really knew much about Superbikes. I made that my ambition, but

things turned and now I am a Pro Motorcycle racer. But I have always been really into the design and graphic industry. We know you design your own logos for your RST suit, what else do you design and do you see this as a future career when you eventually retire? I design anything anyone wants, from Suit designs, templating, helmet designs, apparel design, logos etc.... I bought my first machine when I was only 17, and had to get a loan. I then started making logos and stickers for people and our race team. And still continue to do this now with my company Imagdzign, and hopefully I’ll expand and grow the business in the future. When you’re at a race meeting what do you do in

the evenings, and how do you get to sleep on the night before a race? I am pretty boring to be fair. I know a few riders that like to relax, and possibly have a drink, meet up go out for dinner etc.. But I possibly take it too seriously. But I don’t go out all, just have dinner at hospitality, do my de-brief sheet for the team, and chill out in the camper. I go to every race event and test and treat it as my job! Is it true you don’t have a motorbike licence?! Hahaha! Yep no licence this could be good though, as I might be a little sketchy on the road, also I may have someone try and race me off the lights!! That would end in tears! Do you have any weird superstitions about racing,

like lucky pants? Not really but my RST gloves have seen better days, I have gone through a few sets this year, but like them worn and supple. And no I don’t have the same skid marks in my pants :) Finally we know how busy you are, maybe you need to keep an eye on your dog, he’s got his own twitter account……? Busta!! Yep I’m sitting here writing this, and he’s farting and snoring away, he doesn’t get it from me, it must be my other half :). Two time World Champion and RST ambassador Andrew Pitt talks to us about life after racing, what it takes to be the best in the world and how preparation is the key to success. Andrew has been part of the RST development team since 2005, wearing RST in MotoGP, World Superbikes, World Supersport and British Superbikes. You name it Andrews ridden it. So Andrew, it seems your busier than ever, what have you been up to since you retired? Initially after the crash at Brands in 2010 I was trying to get myself back to a good level of fitness to get back on a motorbike but when I realised I was going to have some lingering ongoing issues I decided it had probably come to an end, and pursued some other things. Firstly because of the extra time I had on my hands I started writing a few pieces for some magazines and they seemed to quite like the way I wrote and I suddenly found myself rushing to get it all done before deadlines. I then got a call from Nick Morgan last year to step in as crew chief for Gary Mason in BSB which was something I never thought about, but really enjoyed and we had instant success. That has then evolved, from a discussion over a few beers and a bbq with Jonny Towers, in Team88 After such a successful career how hard was the decision to retire? As you are getting older it obviously enters your mind but I suppose the decision was almost made for me when I had the big crash at Brands in 2010 and as the months went by I realised I was never going to return to 100% fitness as I was before. With the launch of “TEAM88” you’ve been mentoring riders like Danny Buchan, (who has already stepped up to BSB this season), what difference can it make for a rider to have such an experienced mentor in their garage? I suppose I just try to get them confident and feeling they have a good bike under them when they go out on track. I know what a rider needs and confidence is a big part of it and if I can help them eliminate mistakes that I have made and learned from then it helps them get where they want to be quicker. You’re known to be one of the fittest guys in the paddock, how important is it for a rider to be properly “bike fit” and what exactly is “bike fit”? Bike fit is not smashing it in the gym or being able to ride a pushbike for 6 hours. With our sport we can’t take our race bikes out every day and practise so we need to find bike related training. Sure endurance is a big part of it and that is where running or cycling comes into it. A lot of riders are carrying around unnecessary amounts of body fat because they simply eat too much shit, so that needs to get stripped off because fat is an insulator and it is heavy, which slows the bike down. Then there is the muscle endurance training and core strength that is the real key. I have been to the gym a few times with Jonathan Rea and that boy really knows his core exercises. So we know how important it is to be in good phys-

ical shape, but how did you cope with the pressure of lining up on the MotoGP grid or the first time? It was in Malaysia at Sepang 2002 as a wildcard with the new Kawasaki Motogp project and honestly it was a bit surreal riding around with all the guys I had been watching on TV for years. I found myself watching the stars a bit in the first free practice but then it is just like any other race really except its longer more physical and the bikes are much faster. Apart from the obvious highlights of being two times world champion what is your best memory from your racing career? Race wins and great races probably stand out like the WSB Superbike win in Misano in 2006 against some real greats and some of the races in 2008 against Jonny Rea where when I was at my best. Can you describe what it feels like to be crowned world champion? Honestly it is more of a relief than absolute elation because it is what you focus on all year and when you cross the line and it is done it is just a huge weight of the shoulders. Of course you get all the w****** that say ‘oh Pitt didn’t smile enough or get excited enough’ but that’s life. They are probably the same people that say Stoner is boring. No idea. You’ve ridden in BSB, WSS, WSB and in MotoGP, we can all go out and buy bikes close to what you rode in production championships, but how different is it riding a MotoGP bike? Ha Ha! Depends which one we are talking about. The Kawasaki and Ilmor were real handfuls and didn’t really do what you wanted them to, and the Moriwaki V5 was never quite right with the Dunlop tyres even with that sweet V5 Honda engine. The Yamaha M1 in 2007 when I was test rider was the closest thing to a perfect motorcycle I have ever ridden. The closest most of us get to racing is a track day, can you give us your top tip to get the most from track days? The best advice I can give all track day riders is to release the brakes earlier and run into the turns faster. I do a lot of rider schools now with Focused Events and Ducati Riding Experience and everyone grabs the brakes too hard and stops too much and then they have to open the gas again before they get to the corner because they have slowed down too much. Finally if you didn’t race bikes what would you have done? I’d probably still be working in the investment bank in Sydney in accounting or finance. That wasn’t that appealing so I put everything into racing to be the best I could so I would have no regrets and let’s say it worked out ok. 11 years in the world championship. go on Ryanair! Seriously, it is hard work but all four of us give it maximum effort so it is satisfying when it all works out with good results. Taylor / Tarran, is racing in your genes? What would you be doing if you weren’t racing bikes?

The legendary racer Niall Mackenzie, heads probably the most famous family in British racing, we talk to Niall, and his two sons Taylor & Tarran. Niall Mackenzie is without doubt one of the greatest British racers of all time, with career highlights including finishing fourth in the 1990 Grand Prix world championship (you only have to look at the names of the top ten riders in the 1990 championship to realise what an astonishing performance this was) and three times British Superbike Champion (the only rider to ever win three consecutive championships in 1996/97/98). Niall retired from racing in 2000 and has since been a road tester for Visordown, done various consultancy work for different race teams and most importantly is an RST development rider. Taylor Mackenzie, 19, is competing in the 2012 British Supersport Championship riding for the Martrain Yamaha squad. Taylor has been on two wheels since the age of four, starting his racing career on mini-motos in 2006 and stepping up to full size bikes riding an Aprillia RS125 in 2007. Taylor has competed around the world in the Red Bull Rookie championship and last year riding in the 125 World Championship. Tarran Mackenzie, 17, is competing in both the 2012 Red Bull Rookie championship and the British 125 championship riding for Redline KTM. Tarran has also been riding bikes since he was four, taking a similar career path to Taylor, starting on mini-motos before stepping up to 125’s. We managed to catch up with Niall, Tarran and Taylor when they were all in the same place, a rare occurrence during this years racing season! Niall, how do you cope with two sons racing in three different championships? It is hectic so Jan manages whatever is happening in the UK and I’m the lucky one that gets to

Taylor: I’m not sure if it is in our genes but I’ve been in the paddock since I was 3 months old so it’s all I’ve ever known. Although racing is what we do at the weekends it’s in our lives every single day of the year, whether it be us testing for racing, training for racing, finding sponsorship for racing. It’s all good fun though and we wouldn’t swap it for the world. If I wasn’t racing I’d still be doing something within the paddock. One of my hobbies is designing; I design all my own logos and helmets so it would probably be something to do with that within the paddock. Tarran. I was good at football but wanted to start mini-moto like Taylor and also get on bigger bikes as soon as possible. Taylor did well at school but I was always going to leave at sixteen and now I’m at college doing motorcycle engineering, which works well with my racing. I love sport so I was always going to do something involving sport Niall, is riding a bike at a world level something you can learn or is it a skill you are born with? I believe racing is 50% mental strength backed up with equal amounts of talent and fitness so if someone has this plus the motivation, commitment and luck then anything is possible. Niall, what the biggest difference between the bikes you rode and the machinery being raced today? The electronics and data information. The1000cc fourstrokes have more for sure but it has to be suppressed with electronics especially in lower gears. We had 120kg 500s with 165bhp that would fire you into a different country if you had no throttle control. Today the guys can keep things pinned in any gear whether it is wet or dry. The chassis, suspension and riding techniques are basically the same. Niall, who is the greatest rider of all time, you’ve ridden against some of the greatest ever riders and have spent plenty of time in the modern MotoGP paddock to have probably one of the most informed opinions of anyone we could ever ask? Rossi, no question. He has the talent, motivation, commitment and success. He has captured the attention of millions towards our sport, I’d even go to say he is the greatest sportsman of all time. Mick Doohan is up there too though as I

spent a lot of time with this guy. He went though hell with injuries and never once complained. His five world titles could so easily have been eight or nine. Taylor / Tarran who’s the fastest? Amazingly they have both progressed at the same rate getting podiums in 125 BSB at pretty much the same time in their careers. Taylor analyses things more and Tarran just rides hard. They also both failed to get selected for the Red Bull Rookies on their first attempt but made it in the second year. So far I can’t tell who will be the most successful but we’ll have fun trying! PS I’m still the fastest though! Niall, you’ve probably racked up more air miles than most, what’s the worst journey you’ve ever had? I drove in my van to Mugello in 1984 thinking I’d get an entry in the 250cc GP just by showing my commitment to drive there. I was wrong and refused so with no qualifying money that you got then ran out of cash on the way home. Some friends helped out with diesel but we survived on stolen potatoes and sweetcorn. I also caught some nasty ailment on the journey but couldn’t get to a doctor till I got home. It was hell! Niall, when you’re in the car together, who has control of the radio? Me! Radio 2 for popmaster but Gem 106 for Sam and Amy Niall, we’re lucky to have your YZR500 grand prix bike on loan in the RST showroom, do you mind if I borrow it? Seriously though, what is the favourite bike in your collection? Go for it no probs but bend it, you mend it! That 500 is so special and sounds brill but my Cadburys Boost YZF 750 that I rode again recently brings back so many happy memories of the Whitham, Walker, Hislop BSB years. Taylor/Tarran which one do you most want to ride? Tarran. The NR 750 but I’ll have to wait, as I can’t quite touch the floor yet!
