WE BELIEVE THAT LIFE HAPPENS OUTSIDE.

COVER PHOTO: DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME / MATANUSKA GLACIER, ALASKA / PHOTO BY: OLIVIA COBLE

why We believe that life happens outside: outside of buildings, outside of the lines, and outside of our routines. When you go outside, you discover who you are, where you are, and what you care about. You become part of the world, and all of yourself. Life is full outside: full of beauty, adventure, people and decisions. It is always out there, always happening, and we can decide how to move with it. There are mountains to climb, countries to explore, places to help, and night skies to stare into. There are friendships to forge, and challenges to overcome. These experiences are limitless, and they become the most precious souvenirs of our lives. They only happen, however, when we make the decision to go. We believe in making that decision again and again. Once you’ve been outside, you know that it is somewhere you can always return. After all, it’s where your life happens.

what to expect

WHAT YOU DO Each day in our lives is an opportunity, and this is never more true than on a Moondance trip. Your days will be packed with experiences and the spaces between them.

12

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY You won’t know if you don’t go. But will you go if you don’t know? You'll just have to trust us on this one. Snag those heavy hikers off the shelf, let them lose their new shoe scent, and fill them with a whiff of adventure. That’s a smell that won’t come out in the wash. This might be your first time, but first times are the best place to start. Anyone in good physical condition with a positive attitude and an open mind will find great success. It’s out here with the rushing rivers of the Rockies and the enchanting Maasai markets in Tanzania, the refreshing rains of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the kelpcollecting tide pools in Hanalei Bay. So bring your sense of adventure and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!

Activities will be adventurous, and of the outdoor variety. We believe outdoor adventures push boundaries and are the best classrooms for experiencing growth and connection. Each trip has multiple activities specific to their region around the globe, and you can tailor your experience to your preferred type of exploration. Focus on rock climbing, wave catching, safari gazing, cultural immersion, service, or river rafting to name a few. Each trip delivers a hearty meal of adventure and exhilaration, and a curriculum of leadership development, group dynamics, life experience, and fun. You’ll learn to travel with a group with everything you need, and nothing that you don’t. There will be times for challenging yourself, enjoying yourself, and surprising yourself. The days will fly by, each one will be different, and you will create a rhythm and a home within your group.

WHO YOU’LL BE WITH

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Moondancers are a rare and wonderful breed. Every year we are struck with the caliber of people who flock to our feather. They come from all over the globe. Some of them are bold, shy, hilarious, or thoughtful. They are adventurous, movie buffs, music makers, creative forces, and thrill seeking wanderers. All of them are different, and all of them, authentic.

Our trips offer the opportunity to hone a diverse array of skills depending on where you go. You might come home knowing how to belay, how to read a map, or how to barter in a Moroccan market. These skills are icing on the layer cake of your particular trip; however, the core curriculum of our adventures comes from developing leadership skills in a small group setting.

We encourage the Moondance student to come on a trip without knowing anyone else. This means you don’t have to fall into the roles and routines of who you are at home. Our trips encourage you to be your most unfettered self, and the most amazing people come forth in that atmosphere. We like to think that adventures attract the kind of people who don’t limit or define themselves in one way. We like to think it because it’s true. Our students are diverse in their backgrounds and stories, but they come together to form a larger, more collective narrative. They become family, they keep in touch, and they are the type of people you find on life’s greatest adventures.

GROUP SIZE MATTERS One of the best realities of a trip is the small group, and how it becomes its own larger than life organism. Because the group is small, everyone gets to stand up, stand out, and be a necessary part of the machine. Operating as a whole, the group moves together, eats together, lives together and makes decisions together. You’ll learn how to be an asset to a team, how to find your voice as a leader, and how to support others in their own leadership roles. Everything you do, you’ll do together, thus your success depends on your group. We’ll teach you how to take care of that group, and in the process, you’ll get closer and more connected to this friend family than you ever thought possible.

13

14

expedition behavior Expedition Behavior (EB) is our favorite leadership skill to serve up on a Moondance trip. Simply put, be good to each other and the good will spread. It’s the golden rule, multiplied by the power of an actual expedition. As a part of something bigger, you become aware of yourself in a different, more deliberate way. Good EB is when you take care of your group, because in doing so, you are taking care of yourself. When you are good to your team, the bar is always being raised. When you bring out the best versions of each other, the whole group shines.

What makes Moondance different is our passion for providing you with an experience that changes you. We believe these trips change lives, and your personal growth is our most prized outcome. Our adventures instill in you the ability to find comfort in the outdoors and confidence in yourself. You will prove to yourself that you have everything you need to face life, and thrive in whatever situation it throws at you. Long after your trip is over, the person you become on a Moondance trip will walk into the world with more awareness, openness, leadership and life skills. Our dedication to your life beyond the adventure is what makes Moondance different.

unplug Unplugging is one of the big reasons why I come back every summer. I love being away from technology because that way, I can be present and focus on who I'm with, where I am, and what I'm doing with greater appreciation. - SAM HANSER, 17, ST. LOUIS, MO

Ditch the doldrums of your device and free yourself from the daily tangle. We are here to wage war on the wires and recharge your soul. Unplug! It’s the best thing you can do for your eyes, your mind, your heart, and your life. When you disconnect from technology, you slow down and are able to awaken to the experience of the present moment. This crucial truth too often gets clouded in the cloud. Free your eyes from a filtered existence and fill them with the real thing. Real friends come from real experiences, and real experiences happen when you are free from the constant clatter and ghostly glow of your screen. The importance of this experience cannot be overemphasized. Reconnect to the fact that life at its very best is happening right in front of you.

The ritual of a nightly circle is one of the most special parts of a Moondance trip. Moonup happens every night, on every trip, whether you’re on a glacier in Alaska, or a bamboo raft in Thailand. This gathering each evening is a chance to debrief the day, tell stories, or simply ask each other whatever you want. It’s incredible how close you can become when you simply take the time to sit together and talk. Moonup often becomes a favorite feature of our trips. It’s a place to grow, reflect, and learn from each other. It’s also a place to laugh, stare at the sky, and howl at the moon. However you choose to spend this time, it is completely yours. It becomes unique to your group, and your circle becomes one of the greatest places you will journey.

who are moondancers Every season we are delighted, jawdangled and awestruck at the gemstone students that join us. Folks of the positive, open-minded, belly-laughter loving variety arrive year after year. They come from all over the world! We love them, they love each other, and we all love a good quest. We first get to know each of our students through their individual applications and teacher recommendations. Then they come get to know us, and we all get to know what it means to build great group dynamics.

20

“Moondance is family. A second home. A program I can rely on to help me escape all social norms and express my true inner self without the help of technology. An adventure waiting to happen. Memories that will last forever. Friendships that will never die. Laughter around every corner. And most importantly, a trip of a lifetime. Caroline Smith, 17, Atlanta, GA

21

22 “Moondance means going somewhere, meeting new people, and doing new things, which is perfect for anyone wanting to do very exciting things in life” Edward Ladd, 13, Mobile, AL

“Moondance is an amazing company that crosses dreams with reality” Vaughn Boulus, 12, Augusta, GA

“Moondance holds a very special place in my heart because it allows me to grow as an individual, experience new things, meet new people, and always have the most amazing time. It’s hard to imagine a summer without Moondance.” Lanier Mason, 17 Nashville, TN

“This trip was unbelievable. I had such an amazing group of people, great leaders, and did unbelievable things. I’ve done summer programs and camps before, but there was something so clearly different about Moondance. I am so happy I came!” Crafton Deal, 17, Houston, TX

“Throughout my past 4 years with Moondance I have learned so much about myself and the kind of future I want for myself. Moondance is like a temporary getaway from the real world which allows me to self reflect and really find myself.” Claire Koonsman, 16, Dallas, TX

A DAY IN THE LIFE / PACIFICA, CALIFORNIA / PHOTO BY: BROOKS TATE

live in the moment

24

These days we often find ourselves trying to live in many different moments at once. Our lives encourage it, as the multi-tasks multiply. Our brains bounce from person, to place, to future, to past, so fast that we don’t notice the details of where we are. The details, however, make all the difference. One of the most crucial life skills we wish to instill is the ability to live in the moment. The value of our moments surpass everything. They become who we are, and what we care about. They are quick moving, magical things and they are all that we have. The best way to honor, capture, and keep them, is by living them to the fullest. Be where you are. Talk to each other, and listen. Laugh with your friends, jump in the water, and take in the view. Your moments are actually your most precious resources. Pay attention to them: the way they feel and look and smell. Appreciate the people who are in them. Take comfort in the fact that when you anchor in the here and now, you realize you are exactly where you are supposed to be.

25

26

“My daughter learned to continue to push herself and to take risks. She also learned the value and importance of leadership and that leadership transcends leading out front —you can lead from the middle and you can lead from behind. Leadership does not mean being the loudest or the most opinionated. It was important for her to learn this beyond school with her new Moondance friends on the trip. Lastly, she learned the value of Pura Vida— every day counts!”

leaders 27 Our leaders are the heart, soul, hands and feet of our entire operation. They deliver trips of a lifetime, and they do it safely, smoothly, and with style. We know that the people we send into the field make our trips, and make our company. We keep the Moondance family small, so we get to know each and every person we send out. We are constantly amazed by the caliber of people that work with us, and love how many of them continue to come back. Our leaders are varied in background and personalities, but they all share a passion for cultivating awareness and adventure for young people. Some of them are graduates of NOLS leadership programs, and many of them are Moondance graduates. They are at at least 21 years of age, with the average age being 24. They come to us with resumes that exceed their age in years, and enthusiasm that carries our mission at Moondance.

Safety is the cornerstone of all Moondance trips, and our leaders are well versed in it. Every leader is required to complete an intensive wilderness medicine certification prior to arriving at staff training. Each leader is a certified WFR (Wilderness First Responder) or WFA (Wilderness First Aid). Each leader is also required to attend our intensive 11 day Staff Training, where they will streamline their wilderness, leadership and travel skills to pertain to each of their specific trips. Staff training is the opportunity for us to really get to know each and every leader, and to send them confidently into the field. They focus on the details of their particular trip, and get to know each and every one of their students. We walk away from staff training every year having

28

formed a family. The bond created as a staff, and the quality of individuals we send into the field amazes us. Our leaders are people who we admire, respect, and learn from every year. They are hilarious, caring, authentic and amazing. We are delighted to send them out into the field to pass on their passion to young people.

why I do what I do "I came to Moondance in the summer of 2006 looking to work in the wilderness, and give my meandering life path an upgrade. As I gathered in that Moonup circle for the first time, listening to strangers discuss their biggest fears and wildest dreams, I felt the beginning of a large shift. I had never been around such a concentrated group of people that I was so deeply inspired by. I learned so much, and laughed so hard. I spent 11 days focusing on how to cultivate adventure, and haven’t really stopped. That summer my life changed color. The flavor of this experience has left a lifelong linger. Here are some of my favorite reasons it stays."

FUN Fun seems to be the simplest and most obvious reason, but it is the one that permeates all the others. Life is fun. Fun is important. With Moondance you embody this truth. You go to the best places on earth with the best humans, and it is your actual job to HAVE fun. While you do this you spread the reality that fun is the most worthy of enterprises. It’s important to keep your priorities in check. TO BECOME COMFORTABLE WITH BEING UNCOMFORTABLE The comfort zone, the asphalt castle, the real world, whatever you want to call it, our species continuously attempts to live in a controlled atmosphere. We live indoors. We control the lighting, and the sounds. Our eyes are full of screens and our ears are full of headphones. Discomfort has become something of a tragedy in our society. We fight to believe we are in control of everything, but here's the thing: WE AREN’T. I like to be reminded of this. Go out in the rain. Get cold and wet, and then bundle up, make a shelter and some hot food. Entertain each other beneath a tarp three days into the backcountry. Realize that you are okay. Being wet is uncomfortable. Fix it, and move on. Your response to the rain is what makes all the difference in how you experience it. I like to show people that they get to choose how to respond to the rain. TO BE CONNECTED TO THE PLANET One year, my co-leader and I made a rule that I still stick to this day. If you have the opportunity to jump into a natural body of water, you must take it. You’ll never regret it! While you’re at it, put your face in a flower. Sleep beneath stars, walk beneath trees, and be surrounded by life. Life is incredible, and beautiful and we are connected to it all. When you go into the wilderness, you remember that you are already complete. A perfect design, meant to live among and interact with other perfect designs of life, like trees, mountains, birds and rivers. You remember that the moon is there, and that it moves the oceans. Every night the sun does an incredible firework display as we spin through the universe. It feels good to connect to that. I want to marvel at it and live among it with my friends. To understand our impact and connection to it. To realize we live in a planetary paradise, and not take it for granted.

IN GOOD COMPANY I love working with teenagers. I love taking them away from the asphalt castle and the inter-webs, and watching them reacquaint themselves with being a kid. They are creative, passionate and hilarious people, and they become great friends and teachers. Although they are already experiencing real pressures and realities of growing up, they still have so much room to form themselves. I like to give them a place to be curious and open. To see themselves without the distractions of the world, and within the realness of an adventure. I love watching them arrive on day one, shy, on guard, addicted to their phones, and then seeing those same people on the last day, opened up, empowered and engaged. Their transformations never get old, and neither do mine. THE SHINIEST SELF THEORY On a trip, we teach our students that every person is part of something greater. Be good to each other, and watch how easily that fire spreads. You and your co leader are the first sparks. It’s your job, and privilege to be your shiniest self. I like to be that person. To be more interested in my students than interesting to them. To get up early and hide surprise piñatas down the trail. To listen deeply to what is going on in their worlds. It feels good to share what I know and what I don’t. To focus that goodness exchange rate for an entire summer, and watch others come to understand its power. I like to send them back into their world with it, and remind myself of my own shiniest version. It's good to remember you can be who you want to be, whenever you want to. These reasons continue to evolve with each year. It is a good thing to do. It’s good for others, good for the world, and it’s good for me. It has become part of my fabric. It holds me together. An adventure is an eternal teacher and life companion. The things you learn, and the person you become - those things stay with you forever. Those difficult situations that have been overcome. The physical and emotional challenges I still feel the effects of. Friendships that are unparalleled and lifelong. The best good times of my life. There is nothing like spending a summer in the Moondance orbit. Kelly McFarling Moondance Leader

29

30

“I could not be more grateful for the wonderful leaders, Cade has not stopped talking about their dedication and leadership. They are role models for these children at such a critical time in their lives... Wow, what a great experience for Cade and his new friends to learn about the world and travel. It’s the little things like, “leave no trace” encouraging friends, being a LOD [Leader of the Day], expressing feelings at Moonup! Please give those leaders a big hug! They deserve it! Thank you for this life changing experience. If I could only eloquently explain how much my child needed to unplug and be himself! Forever grateful!” Sigrid McClenaghan, Mother of Cade Madison, MS

31

safety WITHOUT QUESTION, SAFETY IS THE FOREMOST CONCERN FOR ANY FAMILY LOOKING INTO A WILDERNESS OR CULTURAL IMMERSION PROGRAM AND IS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE ON ANY MOONDANCE TRIP.

32

We take enormous pride in our excellent safety record and work hard to provide a quality experience for our students. Our reputation is a direct reflection of our well-designed courses, detailed protocol for conducting safe activities and our low student-to-staff ratio. We monitor and evaluate risks for each trip and make managing these risks a year round responsibility. We use only the finest outfitters and guide services for technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and whitewater rafting. Our leaders are integral to the safety of each trip. Prior to the start of our programs, our trip leaders participate in an intensive 11-day training where safety policies and procedures are emphasized. All of our leaders have their Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certifications. Every leader-team has an extensive first aid

kit and is familiar with the emergency support systems in the areas we travel. We must learn to manage risks daily while living in the wilderness. Safety is not something that Moondance, or any program, can guarantee. Participating in outdoor adventure activities involves inherent risks and dangers that can lead to injury, property damage or even loss of life. Almost any activity can be potentially dangerous. These risks cannot be predicted and can include forces of nature and the possibility of accidents. We discuss how to respect and evaluate risks throughout each trip. We want to teach each participant that responsible behavior, good judgment, and a concern for group safety are the most valuable assets in the outdoors.

DESCRIPTION Time moves at different paces in Peru. It rushes by as you navigate rapids on the headwaters of the Amazon. It flashes with the hustle of culturally rich Cusco. It slows and lingers as you ascend the breath-taking Salkantay Trail, and then it flies backwards as you catch your first glimpse of Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incan Empire. Lose yourself in this legendary time lapse.

“I thought this trip had a great balance of service and adventure. I can’t pick out one activity in particular that was better than the rest because all of them were wonderful experiences.”

After long days of trekking we went to bed early to rise before the sun to see the Machu Picchu ruins! The early morning proved worth it as we watched the sun rise over the ruins, watching the shadows change as the sun moved from east to west. We tackled additional hikes that day up Huayna Picchu mountain and Machu Picchu mountain to see the world around us from even higher vantage points. It took everything we had to keep our students from looking off every ledge for the best view. The group showed their bravery as they climbed higher and higher in the name of adventure.

The past few days in the Galapagos have been full of boat rides, playing in the waves, ice cream, and relaxing on the beach. We have spent every day on the water and we can’t get enough. The ocean may be chilly, but the hot sun makes it so easy to jump in. Everyone was eager to snorkel and swim with all of the unique wildlife. Before jumping in we spotted blue footed boobies and many sea lions. Once in the water the sea lions joined us to play. Sea turtles and schools of fish swam below us and we looked below from the surface. We were always swimming to the bottom to get closer to the animals and the fish hiding in the coral. No one wanted to leave this ocean paradise!

These first few days have been UNBELIZEABLE. We’ve seen countless sharks, caught a plethora of fish, and have all become PADI Open Water Certified!! Our home has been filled with laughs, homemade Belize style cinnamon buns and plenty of time spent underwater. Our days were spent diving some of the most amazing spots this country has to offer and we also got to spend an afternoon fishing. Together as a group we caught around thirty fish in the span of two hours, they were biting like crazy. We are incredibly sad to leave our little slice of heaven, but looking forward to the adventures to come in Costa Rica.

“I loved the service aspect of the trip that let us connect with so many people and families. The activities were such a rush and some of my favorite memories ever. I really pushed myself emotionally by being in a new culture and physically when hiking, surfing, and rafting."

Isthmus. Just say it aloud. It sounds like a meditation; it feels like a reset button. Technically, an isthmus connects two larger landmasses, yet, philosophically, Costa Rica is responsible for connecting adventurous souls with its national motto: Pura Vida. This is a land of true connection: the mind, body and spirit of humans with the pure, natural beauty of what life on Earth should be. As the hours passed, the stars slowly disappeared and the sun began to rise as we saw one of the most gorgeous sunrises we have ever seen. The clouds were thousands of feet below us, stretching over thousands of miles of African land, as far as the eye could see, and the sky was painted in an array of warm oranges, pinks, and yellows. We walked “pole pole”, encouraging each other with song, jokes, and laughter, as well as encouraging words and positive attitudes.”

“This trip overall was such a life changing experience. I got to see some sights of animals I might not ever get the chance to see again, which made the trip that much more special. Traveling across the world and getting to visualize and experience new cultures is not an option you can have everyday, so I am thankful that this trip opened my eyes to see so many things!”

A must for those with spirit animals, a heart for service, and a want for adventure, this trip is a triple threat. South Africa is the land of exotic mammals, and you will see them all; from a safari through the African plains to treks up Table Mountain. Once you've had your fill of some of the most majestic creatures to ever walk the planet, then you will give back by working at a local children’s home. The next morning marked the beginning of our highly anticipated service project. We split up into two groups; one focused on painting the kitchen windows and walls of the orphanage while the other painted the ABC’s and number murals in the younger children’s rooms. After a morning of hard work, laughs, and lots of paint we were all excited for the opportunity to play with the kids! The group did everything from playing soccer to braiding each other’s hair to singing and dancing together. After a few hours of playing at the home, it was time to say the hardest goodbye of the trip. Our hearts were so full but broken that we had to leave these new friendships we had just forged. It was a humbling experience to say the least, but one of the most personally enriching and powerful moments that each and every one of us has ever had.

We saved the best for last and headed straight to the coast for a slice of paradise at our private beach house. Here we were promised beautiful sunsets with palm treefringed beaches, crystal clear calm water unfazed by the big surf outside of the barrier reefs. Our crew opted for two days of surfing at various spots in the area. Upon arriving to the resort in the afternoon, our guys were pumped to be in such an idyllic setting and immediately headed down to the beach. The sun broke through the clouds on its way to the horizon to provide us with an awe-inspiring view over the coast as we looked west.

To get to the village, we must trek through the vast jungle; consequently, we inevitably explore and learn about plants native to Thailand. As we hiked through the jungle into the village, we all found pleasure in stopping along the way to hear our guide share his wealth of knowledge about fruits, trees, insects, traditions, games, and more. Our stop for lunch was as picturesque as they come, eating fried rice wrapped in banana leaves beneath a bamboo hut next to a roaring waterfall. As we continued our hike up the steep rock along the passing creek, we were sweaty, thirsty, and tired; however, coming across this nice surprise gave us all the extra boost we needed. We were greeted on our way up by three elephants. Yes, we were hiking through the mountains in Northern Thailand and stumbled upon three elephants eating in the care of their elephant sanctuary. This was certainly a wow moment for us all.

On our third day, we had our first salt water dive where we walked in from the shore. We saw hundreds of beautiful, colorful fish and even a few spotted eels! Our dives unfortunately had to end, but we had the sun in our faces and wind in our hair—a wonderful way to end an unforgettable day.

SERVICE ADVENTURES

“I loved this trip. I loved constantly being in the water and every activity we did. The service was really rewarding and the leaders were so fun. I’m so glad I went on this trip because of how beautiful everything we saw was and how it pushed me out of my comfort zone.”

A tropical paradise like none other on the globe, Hawaii has it all: volcanoes, underwater tropical forests, the most famous waves on the planet, lush jungles and stunning coastlines. Many look to Hawaii for the easy breezes - but we’re in it for the adventure fix. SCUBA certification, surfing, sea kayaking and night snorkeling, we’ll show you the wilderness of this famed paradise unseen by most. After you’ve adventured, you’ll be thrilled to give back by helping out to preserve this beautiful terrain. It’s a feedback loop of tropical beauty, adventure, and goodness—and that’s what we like to call island time. Set your clocks.

With a breakfast of fresh Hawaiian fruit, off we went to conquer the Big Kahuna. Equipped with boards of every shape and size, we paddled out for an unbelievable surf sesh. When I tell you that everybody knocked this activity out of the water, I mean it. There were small waves, big waves, party waves, and epic wipeout waves. By the end of our lesson, everybody was successfully worn out. However, the day was far from over. We were off to the trail for a hike and while it was long and hard, and it was so worth it. The breathtaking view was well-worth it, not to mention well-deserved.

We laced up our boots, tightened our hip belts and began our uphill journey into the Yosemite Wilderness. Passing through this trailhead felt as though we were entering the wardrobe through to Narnia. Our eyes grew wide as we could feel an immediate shift in the environment. The air became calm and quiet, the light made the greens of the earth shine brighter, the trees rose taller and the birds and bugs became more and more specific, as if we were now in their world instead of our own. During the long day we fully transitioned from a landscape filled with huge mossy trees and boggy meadows to one with huge sweeping views of the entire valley with all of its giant cliffs, granite domes, and gushing waterfalls. With high spirits and a sigh of relief we pushed on to Little Yosemite valley.

A hiss of boiling water, headlamps strapped to helmets, harnesses on, and we’re off. We had 2,000 more feet of elevations to gain. Up rock chimneys with hands feet in deep rock cracks we climbed, until we made it to the upper saddle. We climbed and pushed ourselves further than we ever thought we could before. At the summit, it was a truly incredible moment for everyone there as we shared tears of joy, laughs and hugs. You could see everything and we couldn’t have asked for better weather, not a cloud in the sky. As we’ve learned the past two weeks here together reaching the summit isn’t what life is all about. It’s about the journey, perseverance, and the fact that everyone walked down the mountain a better and more confident version of themselves.

A few days into our backpacking section, we hit our stride and the trail through the tundra got easier. We became a well-oiled machine: setting up and breaking down camp as one unit, but most importantly, being there for one another. As we rolled into camp this day, we passed two moose 100 yards away, the first real Alaskan wildlife that we did not startle off. This night we slept in an incredible valley, beautiful hillsides with absolutely stunning and majestic peaks at each end of the gorge. Add a broken-down military jeep to the campsite, and you have a pretty surreal place to spend a night. This was probably the most trying day yet, but despite all of this, Alaska is a place of unrivaled and powerful beauty and this campsite was our reward.

DESCRIPTION Alaska. Saying it out loud is almost like a sigh of relief. It is a relief, knowing that there is a place out there that is still truly wild and untouched. A place where the scale of natural beauty is almost impossible to fathom. A place where many people use planes instead of cars because there aren’t actual roads. In this place, getting around is limited to your feet, ice axes, crampons, paddles, and passion. On this Alaska expedition you will ride the rushing rivers of glacier melt that carve the landscape. You’ll climb the cobalt blue of giant ice sculptures. You’ll go for days without seeing another human being as you backpack this rugged terrain. NOTES FROM THE FIELD Armed with crampons, alpine-grade glacier boots, harnesses and helmets, we set out towards the glacier nestled beneath the magnificent Wrangell mountains. Our guides were awesome, leading us into the depths of the frozen wonderland towards our own climbing wall. With three ropes set up for climbs of varying difficulty, we were oriented on the proper technique for using ice tools (think “Mission Impossible” meets “Cliffhanger” ice axes) and crampons to scale the walls like rabid spider monkeys. After conquering every route we could find, we packed up and moved camp to the other side of the glacier. The wind blowing off the icefall up ahead felt great after some tough climbing. The scale of this place is something else. It is a true wilderness, and we feel special to be able to experience it. We were all feeling the best kind of tired, knowing a hot meal and a warm sleeping bag were well on the way!

TRIP DATES

• Get on your camel and ride into the long shadows, and starry skies of the Moroccan landscape

We left base camp just before sunrise in order to make our summit dream a reality. We arrived at the summit of Jbel Toubkal a few hours later, a surprising and satisfying feat, when we all participated in a fun group cheer, shouting “WAAANNNAA” and dancing along as a group on the top of this North African peak that we successfully summited for the first time. Later that evening, after our descent, we gazed at the stars strewn in the sky like sequins embroidered into a fine Moroccan tapestry, marveling at our accomplishment.

Glaciers, volcanos, mountains and rivers—Iceland is a land that offers it all! As we entered the volcanic, black sand desert created by the mighty snowcapped “volcano”, we weren’t completely sure whether we were still in Iceland or had accidentally stumbled upon the moon. Either way, we were entranced by the unusual yet spectacular land around us. This place is truly untamed—but that’s no problem for our group of expedition masters.

“I really enjoyed Moondance’s Pacific Northwest trip! I had never been to Washington or Oregon before, so I was very excited to adventure to a new part of the country. Some of my favorite activities were Monkey’s Face, Desolation Peak, and sea kayaking, but I really loved them all!”

There is a place in the top corner of the country, bound by the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Rocky Mountains to the east. Some call it the Pacific Northwest, others call it Cascadia. Everyone who has been there calls it beautiful. This rugged wilderness is a wonderland to humans, salmon, sea creatures, land dwellers, eagles, osprey, and orca. It hosts jagged mountain ranges, lush rainforests, high deserts, and rushing rivers. Things here are bigger and more lush. Trees grow to be enormous. Ferns drape, and moss carpets the towering forests. Even the summer days linger longer when the green vibrancy of this place comes out to shine. Spend some time in the top corner of the USA, through its most prized outdoor adventure opportunities. You’ll find bright gorgeous

We paddled out into the foggy morning after watching some river otters and seals play around in the bay of Stuart Island, and stopped on Gossip Island for lunch and a long break while the fog cleared and visibility improved. We all enjoyed exploring the island with its variety of wildflowers, even finding some starfish on the outer rock edges of the island. After setting back out to our take out point, we took our final crossing as a chance to reflect on our accomplishments and memories from the past days, and brought our paddle to a close with a group-wide serenade of our favorite songs.

The next morning, we met our guides at quite possibly the most beautiful lake we have ever seen. We had been hearing for the last two weeks how beautiful the Tetons were, but the stunning views were something that you really can’t put into words. We broke up into small groups to learn the ins and outs of the rock in our climbing school. All of the kids did incredible on this first day and made the most of their time on the rocks. Although a couple people were nervous at the beginning, it was incredible to watch the group rally around each other and support each other relentlessly!

Our final day of canyoneering featured some pretty unique opportunities to scramble our way through some breathtaking sandstone formations. The last bit of canyoneering included a stunning rappel. We bid goodbye to our amazing climbing guides, so sad to end our time with them but so excited for the rafting section that lay ahead! The group voted to return to our swimming hole, but instead of returning to the first waterfall, the kids decided to take the road less traveled, and explore a new trail. We really lucked out with this decision, and found another waterfall with some really fun naturally occurring rock slides!

After we packed up camp at Yosemite on Monday morning, we couldn’t say goodbye without one more dip into the valley to see the falls. Our efforts were rewarded as we ascended the stone steps rising along the side of Vernal Falls! The waterfall was so powerful that the mist drenched us as much as pouring rain might have, and all around us the rising cliffs were covered in fluorescent green moss. Making it to the top was like entering into another world–roaring waterfall beside us, valley below, Half Dome in the distance, and none other than a double rainbow crossing the waterfall base.

To secure a spot, you must submit your online application along with a $1000 deposit. We have a limited number of openings for each trip and applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. We open our enrollment to alumni families at the end of summer and many trips fill quickly. While most trips are full by early January, there is no deadline for submitting applications. After May 1st, please call the Moondance office to inquire about any available openings.

APPLICATION/DEPOSIT To apply, submit an application online at www.moondanceadventures.com and deposit via Visa, MasterCard, AMEX or check. Your deposit will be applied towards the full tuition of the program. The deposit is fully refundable if your trip choice is not available or the applicant is not accepted.

ENROLLMENT AND ADMISSION POLICIES

94

After submitting an application and deposit you will receive an automated email confirming we’ve received it successfully, and we will follow up with a “Welcome Aboard” phone call. If your first choice trip is unavailable, our Admissions Team will call to confirm that the second choice is available. If neither first nor second choice options are available, our Admissions Team will call to discuss options for your child. Our Admissions Team will need to hear from both Teacher References (if a new applicant) to ensure that your child is physically, emotionally and behaviorally able to participate in a Moondance program. Teacher References will not be contacted for Moondance Alumni. We will then send you a TIP (Trip Information Packet) that will include required forms such as medical forms, packing lists, travel information and more. Much of this paperwork is available online as well. Failure to return these in a timely manner will jeopardize your space and Moondance reserves the right to cancel applicants with outstanding paperwork past April 1st.

IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS We are proud that Moondance seeks positive, wholesome, enthusiastic, motivated and team-oriented individuals. Moondance is not a program for students with behavioral, motivational, or substance abuse issues, nor are we a continuation of a therapeutic, vocational or rehabilitation program. We observe the right to deny admission to anyone we believe is unable to meet the physical, mental and safety demands of our programs at any time.

LOYALTY REWARDS DISCOUNT For discounts to apply, full tuition must be received by March 1st, 2018: • Moondance alumni and their siblings receive a $100 tuition discount when signing up for a 2018 trip. • In addition, alumni receive a complimentary Moondance gift.

ADDITIONAL COSTS/SPENDING MONEY Tuition does not include domestic or international airfare. The following trips have in country airfare covered by Moondance: Hawaiian Islands, Belize + Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador + Galapagos, South Africa, Spain + Morocco and Thailand. In addition, medical expenses, spending money and personal gear are not included in the tuition fee. Students should have a small amount of spending money for incidentals such as souvenirs, gifts, showers, and personal items. Additional expenses for Visas will be the responsibility of participants on the Kilimanjaro trip. If a student withdraws, is dismissed or arrives late to the program and Moondance incurs fees related to travel expenses, these will be the responsibility of the participant.

TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE To insure you against unexpected emergencies, we strongly urge parents to secure their investment by purchasing an inexpensive trip cancellation insurance policy. This reimburses you should you have to cancel due to certain unforeseen reasons. More information will be sent to you in your trip information packet.

TUITION/FINAL PAYMENT Trip tuition is due on March 1st, 2018. Applications submitted after March 1st must be accompanied by full tuition payment. A 3% late fee will be applied to any outstanding balance more than 10 days past due. Moondance reserves the right to cancel any unpaid applicants whose full tuition is more than 30 days past due with no return of fees. All payments must be in U.S. Dollars.

REFUND POLICY The seasonal nature of our program prevents any tuition refund, or the reduction of tuition for late arrival, early withdrawal, or cancellation for any reason. When you sign up for a Moondance trip, you have accepted a limited space within a small group. Once that space is reserved, we are no longer able to offer it to others or fill the space. Therefore, we have a no refund policy for our tuition for any reason including personal, academic, medical, illness, injury, withdrawal, dismissal or any other reason. Our deposit is non-refundable except as outlined in our cancellation fees below. We have these strict policies because Moondance cannot recover course expenses from cancellations, even if due to illness or injury. GROUP PLACEMENT One of the true benefits of an adventure experience is meeting and living with other highly motivated and group-oriented students from around the country. The bonds that form over a short period of time cannot be easily duplicated. Each expedition group is usually no larger than thirteen students. On certain trips, we will have multiple groups and it is important to divide students by age to create compatible groups. We allow no more than two friends together in the same group and limit the number of students in each group according to city or school. Moondance reserves the right to make the final decision on all groupings. Additionally, while we strive for co-ed groups, Moondance does not guarantee co-ed expeditions. There are always at least two qualified leaders (one male, one female) with each group.

about the founder Hayes founded Moondance in 1996 as a way to share outdoor adventures with young people. He has been working and designing programs for teenagers for over 40 years. He began his love for the outdoors at Camp Deerhorn in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, a camp founded by his grandfather in 1930. A graduate of Charlotte Country Day School and the University of Alabama, Hayes served The Lovett School in Atlanta for 12 years as the Dean of Students and the Director of Summer Programs. He has participated in programs with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), the North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) and the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). Hayes tries to visit as many domestic trips each summer as time allows and has made multiple ascents on Mt. Rainier and the Grand Teton with Moondance groups. Hayes’ wife, Michael, is a native of Nashville, TN and graduate of Harpeth Hall and Sewanee - The University of the South. Michael spends her quality time raising their daughter, Hunter. Hunter is eagerly awaiting her first Moondance trip. They live in Nashville, TN where they coordinate all Moondance adventures.
