WE BELIEVE THAT LIFE HAPPENS OUTSIDE Outside of buildings, outside of the lines, and outside of our routines. When you go outside, you discover who you are, where you are and what you care about. You grow, you shift. You become part of the world and all of yourself. Life is full outside: full of beauty, adventure, people and decisions. It is always out there, always happening and we can decide how to move with it. There are mountains to climb, countries to explore, places to

help and night skies to stare into. There are friendships to forge and challenges to overcome. These experiences are limitless and they become the most precious souvenirs of our lives. They only happen, however, when we make the decision to go. We believe in making that decision again and again. Once you’ve been outside, you know that it is somewhere you can always return. After all, it’s where your life happens.

welcome to our adventures

As Moondance has evolved, we have fine tuned our goal of becoming seriously good at what we do best which is to create extraordinary experiences for young people. Our deep desire is to blow the doors off of what one could possibly imagine adventure travel could be. It is not only about the immediate satisfaction of a successful trip, but we hope the long term impact. When one can reflect in 20 years that they had a life altering experience as a teen, now that would be success. It is this yearning to create lifetime world travelers that ignites our passion to become the finest adventure travel program for teens. Please enjoy our 2019 catalog of the magical places we travel. If you dream of adventure, I think you will like what you see.

background & philosophy Oliver Wendell Holmes once wrote— “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” It is our goal and passion at Moondance to provide this kind of experience. The kind that expands the mind, the heart and the soul. The kind that encourages curiosity and the type that unleashes the strength and spirit of the self. We provide adventures where students are challenged to leave their comfort zones and, outside of their day to day lives, gain a

deeper understanding of who they are. We believe that the wild outdoors is the ideal setting for reminding us of who we are as leaders, team members, friends and human beings. We go places where distractions are limited to night skies, sunsets, new friends, good conversation, mountain passes, and fresh air. We show our students that they become better when they are working for something bigger than themselves, that teamwork and community are a cornerstone for living consciously and

courageously, and that they have more confidence, capabilities, joycapacity, and wonder inside of them than they ever thought possible. We are in the business of life changing, belly laughing, star gazing, foundation shifting good times. We know that life begins when you step outside your comfort zone, and whether that be climbing up a rock face, sleeping in a tent for the first time, or traveling to a new and exotic land, we’re here to show you how much you are capable of.

what to expect

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

WHAT YOU'LL DO

You won’t know if you don’t go. But will you go if you don’t know? You'll just have to trust us on this one. Snag those heavy hikers off the shelf, let them lose their new shoe scent, and fill them with a whiff of adventure. That’s a smell that won’t come out in the wash. This might be your first time, but first times are the best place to start. Anyone in good physical condition with a positive attitude and an open mind will find great success. It’s out here with the rushing rivers of the Rockies and the enchanting Maasai Markets in Tanzania, the refreshing rains of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the kelp-collecting tide pools in Hanalei Bay. So bring your sense of adventure and get ready for the trip of a lifetime!

Each day in our lives is an opportunity, and this is never more true than on a Moondance trip. Your days will be packed with experiences and the spaces between them. Activities will be adventurous, and of the outdoor variety. We believe that an outdoor adventure pushes boundaries, and is the best classroom for experiencing growth and connection. Each trip has multiple activities specific to their region around the globe, and you can tailor your experience to your preferred flavor of exploration. Focus on rock climbing, wave catching, safari gazing, cultural immersion, service, or river rafting to name a few. Pick your flavor. Each trip delivers a hearty meal of adventure and exhilaration, and a curriculum of leadership development, group dynamics, life experience and fun. You’ll learn to travel with a group, with everything you need, and nothing that you don’t. There will be times for challenging yourself, enjoying yourself and surprising yourself. The days will fly by, and each one will be different, but you will create a rhythm and a home within your group.

WHO YOU’LL BE WITH Moondancers are a rare and wonderful breed. Every year we are struck with the caliber of people who flock to our feather. They come from all over the globe. Some of them are bold, shy, hilarious or thoughtful. They are adventurous, movie buffs, music makers, creative forces and thrill seeking wanderers. All of them are different and all of them, authentic.

PA G E

14

We encourage the Moondance student to come on a trip without knowing anyone else. This fact means you don’t have to fall into the roles and routines of who you are at home. Our trips encourage you to be your most unfettered self, and the most amazing people come forth in that atmosphere. We like to think that adventures attract the kind of people who don’t limit or define themselves in one way. We like to think it because it’s true. Our students are diverse in their backgrounds and stories, but they come together to form a larger, more collective narrative. They become family, they keep in touch and they are the type of people you find on life’s greatest adventures.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN Our trips offer the opportunity to hone a diverse array of skills depending on where you go. You might come home knowing how to belay, how to read a map, or how to barter in a Moroccan market. These skills are icing on the layer cake of your particular trip, however, the core curriculum of our adventures comes from developing leadership skills in a small group setting.

GROUP SIZE

15

PA G E

One of the best realities of a trip is the small group and how it becomes its own larger-than-life organism. Because the group is small, everyone gets to stand up, stand out, and be a necessary part of the machine. Operating as a whole, the group moves together, eats together, lives together and makes decisions together. You’ll learn how to be an asset to a team, how to find your voice as a leader, and how to support others in their own leadership roles. Everything you do, you’ll do together, thus your success depends on your group. We’ll teach you how to take care of that group, and in the process, you’ll get closer and more connected to this friend-family than you ever thought possible.

expedition behavior Expedition Behavior (EB) is our favorite leadership skill to serve up on a Moondance trip. Simply put, be good to each other and the good will spread. It's the golden rule, multiplied by the power of an actual expedition. As a part of something bigger, you become aware of yourself in a different, more deliberate way. Good EB is when you take care of your group, because in doing so, you are taking care of yourself. When you are good to your team, the bar is always being raised. When you bring out the shiniest versions of each other, the whole group sparkles.

PA G E

beyond the adventure What makes Moondance different is our passion for providing you with an experience that changes you. We believe that these trips change lives, and your personal growth is our most prized outcome. Our adventures instill in you the ability to find comfort in the outdoors and confidence in yourself. You will prove to yourself that you have everything you need to face life and thrive in whatever situation it throws at you. Long after your trip is over, the person you become on a Moondance trip will walk into the world with more awareness, openness, leadership, and life skills. Our dedication to your life beyond the adventure is what makes Moondance different.

unplug

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.” — Anne Lamott Ditch the doldrums of your device and free yourself from the daily tangle. We are here to wage war on the wires and recharge your soul. Unplug! It’s the best thing you can do for your eyes, your mind, your heart, and your life. When you disconnect from technology, you slow down and are awakened to the experience of the present moment. This crucial truth too often gets clouded in the cloud. Free your eyes from a filtered existence and fill them with the real thing. For all the powers and progresses of technology, life is still about flesh, blood, laughter, and eye contact. Real friends come from real experiences, and real experiences happen when you are free from the constant clatter and ghostly glow of your screen. The importance of this experience cannot be overemphasized. Reconnect to the fact that life at its very best is happening right in front of you.

PA G E

18

I feel extremely strongly in support of the policy to unplug. I have no idea how the leaders could control the attitude and engagement of the kids if they were bombarded by anyone not part of the experience they are sharing. How could you ‘Live in the Moment’ if you are mentally somewhere else?

” Thomas McMeekin, Parent of Tom McMeekin, Spartanburg, SC

live in the moment “

I rarely have moments when my entire focus is how I feel in that moment; I am usually thinking about the future or the past, but on this trip there were many times where I lived purely in the moment.

who are moondancers Every season we are delighted, jaw-dangled and awestruck at the gemstone students that join us. Folks of the positive, open-minded, belly-laughter loving variety arrive year after year. They come from all over the world! We love them, they love each other, and we all love a good quest. We first get to know each of our students through their individual applications and teacher recommendations. Then they come get to know us, and we all get to know what it means to build a great community.

“When I’m on my Moondance trips, I think I’m the best version of myself. There’s something that being outside does to you that builds character unlike other activities.” Lucy Worthy, 16, St. Simons, GA

Moondance is a lifestyle that includes making intimate and real relationships, thriving in the face of adversity and discomfort, having genuine fun, and getting to be yourself around people that truly care about you.

Will Beeson, 15, Spartanburg, SC

I really enjoyed meeting nine other amazing kids my age and meeting two role models as leaders. I also think this trip had a perfect balance of difficulty and relaxation. It truly tested me both physically and mentally and I am thankful for that. I accomplished more in these three weeks than maybe the past fourteen years of my life.

Louisa Thompson, 14, Scarsdale, NY

“Moondance means a time away from the real world, where the most genuine relationships form and experiences happen. It gives me confidence to do new things and allows me to find myself in a complicated world. Isabel Balmer, 16, Nashville TN

“My children have been on a total of six Moondance trips and all have been amazing. When your children are sad to be home after a Moondance trip, you know it was successful.” Clayton Howell, Parent of Barrett and Sheffield Howell, Atlanta, GA

There are so many positive experiences had by Jack that they are almost too many to name. Here are the top few: loving and appreciating the outdoors, experiencing independence, making new family-like lifelong friendships, spending time with mentors like his trip leaders. I could not be more pleased and excited to send him back for another summer in 2019!-

Annie Godwin, Parent of Jack Godwin, Raleigh, NC

I didn’t really know what to expect going into the trip, but EVERYONE NEEDS TO EXPERIENCE MOONDANCE IN THEIR LIFETIME. I wish I started younger. I hope one day I have the chance to be a leader so I can give people the same experience I had. I hope it’s around for my kids to experience also.

Mitchell Marconi, 18, Marion, AR

We love Moondance and Warren has found his place. What surprised me... how Moondance has clicked with Warren and how his sense of adventure for travel has been sparked! I had no idea that 4 years ago after Big Wild, he would have the remainder of his summers planned in his head! Iceland, Machu Picchu and Chamonix... one more to go... Kilimanjaro. Thank you, Hayes and Moondance!

moonup The ritual of a nightly circle is one of the most special parts of a Moondance trip. Moonup happens every night, on every trip, whether you’re on a glacier in Alaska or a bamboo raft in Thailand. This gathering each evening is a chance to debrief the day, tell stories, or simply ask each other whatever you want. It’s incredible how close you can become, when you simply take the time to sit together on the edge of the day and talk. Moonup often becomes a favorite feature of our trips. It’s a place to grow, reflect, and learn from each other. It’s also a place to laugh, stare at the sky, and howl at the moon. However you choose to spend this time, it is completely yours. It becomes unique to your group and your circle becomes one of the greatest places you will journey.

MOONDANCE / LEADERS

LEADERS Our Leaders are the heart, soul, hands, and feet of our entire operation. They deliver trips of a lifetime, and they do it safely, smoothly, and with style. We know that the people we send into the field make our trips, and make our company, thus we keep the Moondance family small, so we get to know each and every person we send out. We are constantly amazed by the caliber of people that work with us, and love how many of them continue to come back.

“I am most impressed with the leaders. Mae loved her leaders and loves the atmosphere they created on this trip. She loved all the students with her and feels like she has thirteen new lifelong friends. Ellen Harvey, Parent of Mae Harvey, Mobile, AL

PA G E

28

MOONDANCE / LEADERS

Our Leaders are varied in background and personalities, but they all share a passion for cultivating awareness and adventure for young people. Many of them are graduates of Outward Bound or NOLS leadership programs, and some of them are Moondance graduates. They are at least 21 years of age, with the average age being 25. They come to us with resumes that exceed their age in years, and enthusiasm that carries our mission at Moondance. They are hired for their experience in leadership, wilderness travel, international experience, positive energy, and interest in working with young people. They are teachers, musicians, climbers, writers, future nurses, doctors, and coaches. To our students they become role models, leaders, and great friends. Risk management is the cornerstone of all Moondance trips, and our leaders are well versed in it. Every leader is required to complete an intensive wilderness medicine certification prior to arriving at staff training. Each leader is a certified WFR (Wilderness First Responder) or WFA (Wilderness First Aid). Each leader is also required to attend our 12 day Staff Training, where they will streamline their wilderness, leadership and travel skills to pertain to each of their specific trips. Staff Training is the opportunity for us to really get to know each and every leader, and to send them confidently into the field. They focus on the details of their particular trip, and get to know each and every one of their students.

29

PA G E

We walk away from Staff Training every year having formed a family. The bond created as a staff, and the quality of individuals we send into the field amazes us. Our Leaders are people who we admire, respect, and learn from every year. They are hilarious, caring, authentic, and amazing. We are delighted to send them out into the field to pass on their passion to young people.

why I do what I do “I came to Moondance in the summer of 2006 looking to work in the wilderness, and give my meandering life path an upgrade. As I gathered in that Moonup circle for the first time, listening to strangers discuss their biggest fears and wildest dreams, I felt the beginning of a large shift. I had never been around such a concentrated group of people that I was so deeply inspired by. I learned so much, and laughed so hard. I spent 11 days focusing on how to cultivate adventure, and haven’t really stopped. That summer my life changed color. The flavor of this experience has left a lifelong linger. Here are some of my favorite reasons it stays.”

fun Fun seems to be the simplest and most obvious reason, but it is the one that permeates all the others. Life is fun. Fun is important. With Moondance you embody this truth. You go to the best places on earth with the best humans, and it is your actual job to HAVE fun. While you do this you spread the reality that fun is the most worthy of enterprises. It’s important to keep your priorities in check.

The comfort zone, the asphalt castle, the real world, whatever you want to call it, our species continuously attempts to live in a controlled atmosphere. We live indoors. We control the lighting, and the sounds. Our eyes are full of screens and our ears are full of headphones. Discomfort has become something of a tragedy in our society. We fight to believe we are in control of everything, but here's the thing: WE AREN’T. I like to be reminded of this. Go out in the rain. Get cold and wet, and then bundle up, make a shelter and some hot food. Entertain each other beneath a tarp three days into the backcountry. Realize that you are okay. Being wet is uncomfortable. Fix it, and move on. Your response to the rain is what makes all the difference in how you experience it. I like to show people that they get to choose how to respond to the rain.

to be connected to the planet One year, my co-leader and I made a rule that I still stick to this day. If you have the opportunity to jump into a natural body of water, you must take it. You’ll never regret it! While you’re at it, put your face in a flower. Sleep beneath stars, walk beneath trees, and be surrounded by life. Life is incredible, and beautiful and we are connected to it all. When you go into the wilderness, you remember that you are already complete. A perfect design, meant to live among and interact with other perfect designs of life, like trees, mountains, birds and rivers. You remember that the moon is there, and that it moves the oceans. Every night the sun does an incredible firework display as we spin through the universe. It feels good to connect to that. I want to marvel at it and live among it with my friends. To understand our impact and connection to it. To realize we live in a planetary paradise, and not take it for granted.

risk managment We take enormous pride in our excellent safety record and work hard to provide a quality experience for our students. Our reputation is a direct reflection of our well-designed courses, detailed protocol for conducting safe activities, and our low student-to-staff ratio. We monitor and evaluate risks for each trip and make managing these risks a year round responsibility. We use only the finest outfitters and guide services for technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and whitewater rafting. Our leaders are integral to the safety of each trip. Prior to the start of our programs, our trip leaders participate in an intensive 12-day training where safety policies and procedures are emphasized. All of our leaders have their Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certifications. Every leader-team has an extensive first aid kit and is familiar with the emergency support systems in the areas we travel. We must learn to manage risks daily while living in the wilderness. Safety is not something that Moondance, or any program, can guarantee. Participating in outdoor adventure activities involves inherent risks and dangers that can lead to injury, property damage or even loss of life. Almost any activity can be potentially dangerous. These risks cannot be predicted and can include forces of nature and the possibility of accidents. We discuss how to respect and evaluate risks throughout each trip. We want to teach each participant that responsible behavior, good judgment, and a concern for group safety are the most valuable assets in the outdoors.

This trip was the best experience of my life. I grew both physically and emotionally as a person and a leader. I learned things about myself through others and by being in an environment full of people who encourage me to be the best I can be. I enjoyed getting to expand my abilities and grow out of my comfort zone. I loved this trip.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD Our Moon-children have been settling in well to the ways of the Wyoming people as we just completed our 14-mile journey through the Wind River Range. Great friendships have formed over the few short days we’ve shared together and will continue to grow throughout the rest of our journey. We started our venture with breakfast sandwiches before packing our backpacks in anticipation for our four-day excursion. We slipped on our hiking boots and began our hike deep into the wilderness. We were lucky enough to set up tents next to a babbling brook and big open fields filled with rocks perfect for lounging in the sun. We all shared a big meal together before heading off for our first glorious night of sleep under the stars in the backcountry.

The morning began with the most staggering views of the Pyrenees thus far. Our Refugio was on the edge of the world with the sharp peaks and rolling hills painted in front of us. Sheep and donkeys were in our backyard, their bells ringing as they moved across the landscape. For many of us, these bell sounds have become the sounds of the Pyrenees. We trekked through today’s cirque watching the local Izard migrate in the distance. You know it’s a good sign when even the guide is speechless at the quality of wildlife sightings in one day. We silently walked for a section of the trail absorbing the magic of the mountains. After another “French Meditation,” we continued to Gavarnie, which is the quintessential Pyrenean town; the waterfall perfectly set in the distance.

On this trip of a lifetime you will sample the wildest and most wondrous sides of this incredible island. From hiking to hot spring soaking, this Icelandic experience will leave you awestruck.

We hopped into our new super sprinter van and headed up to the Icelandic highlands over mountainous terrain and watched as the grass turned to volcanic rock. After a bumpy ride, we climbed our final hill to reveal a campsite filled with rainbow, snowcapped mountains. Immediately everyone jumped out of the van to explore our new paradise. Our LODs led the charge into the volcanic field, where a spontaneous game of hide and seek began. Not long after that, the group rejoined to conquer Blue Mountain-named after the blueish tint it gets from its clay composition. At the top, we got our first glimpse of the hike to come and the glaciers around us.

We fueled up for a big day of ice climbing with breakfast burritos then went to meet our energetic, goofy Nova guides to gear up for the day. As soon as we were all equipped with crampons, helmets, and harnesses, we were on our way to the glacier for a full day on ice climbing!!! Before we knew it, we were stomping on ice. Then we came to this glacial cirque with a pool bellow, massive cracks, and a beautiful ice fall (glacial waterfall). This would be our climbing site for the day! After an awesome morning, we headed back to the Matanuska Glacier for an adventure trek. Our guides led us to some breathtaking features throughout the glacier. From the deep crevasses, to staggering glacier waterfalls, our eyes were in for a treat that day.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD That evening, Moonup took place on a rocky beach nearby Lightning Creek that looked out over an impeccable view that cannot be easily nor adequately described: the snowy peaks of the Cascade Mountain Range jutted out along the skyline, appearing more like a painted mural than a reality that lay before us. Sitting together in a circle, we felt dwarfed and humbled by our surroundings, yet extremely powerful as a close-knit team that could take on anything. Later that night, we would depart on what would be perhaps the most challenging component of our backpacking journey, we would summit Desolation Peak in time for sunrise.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD We started the day with what many considered to be the best thing they have ever done in their life: Canyoning. It consisted of jumping, sliding, and repelling down the Soca Canyon. We had an absolute blast! Then we feasted on one of the largest lunches any of us had ever seen, we ordered close to eight large pizzas, pastas, and many other delicious things. After recovering from the food coma this meal put us in, we strapped on our harnesses and went on to our next adventure. We started our 4-day trekking adventure with a day hike in Triglav National Park. On our short-day hike, we scrambled across a glacier at the base of the Julian Alps. There, we came across a meadow before reaching our peak and taking in the views.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD We threw on our daypacks and descended into the valley before climbing up the Spanish countryside to an extraordinary view of the snow-capped peaks in the Picos de Europa National Park. Our LODs took turns orienting the map and navigating our group through the rocky trail. Our guides surprised us with patatas bravas in a small backcountry tienda at the end of the trailhead. We stopped for lunch at a beautiful overlook of the Spanish granite where a herd of goats accompanied us, probably because we had yummy snacks in our packs. We have arrived in what must be one of the most beautiful places on this planet. We are surrounded by jagged, snowy peaks; clear blue mountain lakes, and ice-cold rushing rivers. Anyone in the front of the raft where all the waves crashed got soaked! Afterwards, we headed to the Nantahala Outdoor Center to go rafting in duckies and explore the high ropes course. GETTING YOUR GROOVE ON / WAINADIRO VILLAGE, FIJI / PHOTO BY: RUTHIE FLOWERS

This was my first Moondance, and it blew me away. I have never felt more alive. It taught me the beauty of life, people, and this planet. The idea of Moondance—putting 14 strangers in the most exotic places in the world—scared me at first. But, I have never fallen in love with thirteen others and made true friends. I love the motto “live in the moment”. It helps to keep you grounded and to take nothing for granted. I loved immersing myself in another culture and seeing the beauty of other people and cultures. I loved every second of my trip and learned so much about myself.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD Our first full day on the island was full of excitement! We woke with the sun and had an awesome breakfast of fluffy tortillas (aka flap jacks) with jam and eggs before we went to the dive lodge to get all suited up for the next few days of diving. On our walk to the dock, we spotted a giant eagle ray waving at us as it swam by-so cool! We all took it as a good luck sign for our day of diving. We were all itching to test out our new SCUBA skills in open water, which definitely lived up to our expectations! We submerged underwater and saw THREE reef sharks and a sea turtle!!! During our afternoon dive, we explored a wall of coral filled with fish and even a lobster. We were lucky enough to see a tarpon too! Truly unBelizeable! It’s been an incredible adventure.

Isthmus. Just say it aloud. It sounds like a meditation; it feels like a reset button. Technically, an isthmus connects two larger landmasses, yet, philosophically, Costa Rica is responsible for connecting adventurous souls with its national motto: Pura Vida. This is a land of true connection: the mind, body and spirit of humans with the pure, natural beauty of what life on Earth should be. One part world famous water adventure, one part cultural immersion, all parts amazing, this Costa Rica trip is a once in a lifetime one. This is your one lifetime, and Pura Vida is waiting for you!

costa rica

Since our last update we’ve been trekking all over the beautiful country of Costa Rica, exploring and camping in new villages all along the way. The views of Costa Rica’s vibrant green mountains from our new home above the clouds were breathtaking. Our hike on the second day was a whole new adventure. We got to try all sorts of new fruits along the way… fresh sugar cane cut right from the plant, cacao beans (so tasty), and much more! After a full night of rest, the group is ready to crush these final few miles before we get to spend a couple days on the beautiful rapids of the Pacuare River. The group is ecstatic for rafting! Catch you guys down the bottom of the river! PURA VIDA!

NOTES FROM THE FIELD We arrived in the Galapagos that afternoon just in time for a late lunch at a tortoise ranch in the highlands of Santa Cruz. We explored the ranch all afternoon, hiking through a lava tunnel that was formed thousands of years ago, we saw giant tortoises basking in the sun, and we learned all about life as a tortoise on the Galapagos Islands. Blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, sea lions, and pelicans are all native to the island, and at the end of our hike the next day, we went snorkeling! We discovered a whole other world under the sea: eels, blue starfish, green sea turtles, and parrot fish. Baby sea lions were looking for buddies to swim with and we were happy to oblige! It was amazing!!

NOTES FROM THE FIELD The next few days were filled with sunshine and nonstop SCUBA, and we were so grateful for it. The water here is crystal clear, surrounded by stunning beaches and lush, bright green jungles. We soon discovered that Fiji is even more beautiful underwater!! On our last day of diving we spent the morning exploring an incredible wreck not too far off shore. We were all mind blown at all the different sea life and coral that now inhabited the ship we were swimming through. We even saw a decent handful of sharks-all at a safe distance-and it was easily one of the coolest experiences most of us have ever had in the ocean. We are so sad to leave our home by the sea but are so excited to hop on the river tomorrow and head into the village after some well-deserved rest. Community service marks the halfway point of our trip, and we cannot believe how fast it has flown!

NOTES FROM THE FIELD On Friday, we packed up our bags and traveled to the magnificent island of Kauai! We set up our new little home in a forest near a white sand beach, perfect for watching sunrises. We spent Saturday at Hanalei Bay, learning how to surf and taking in all the breathtaking views that Kauai has to offer. Every day, we are impressed by the growth of this outstanding group of individuals. The kids got the chance to sea kayak the Na Pali coast, famous for its steep cliffs reaching thousands of feet high! We saw several sea turtles along the way and could not get over the deep blue swell of the Pacific! It was a tough paddle but the kids crushed it! We loved seeing our group come together, especially in such a beautiful place.

Summit day!!! Before bed the night before, we were blessed with a night sky full of more stars than we had ever dreamed possible. The Milky Way was making its presence known and the moon rose above the clouds (yes, we had been above the clouds for a few days now) and cast a red glow amongst the surface of the sea of clouds beneath us. We awoke at 3am and were moving up the mountain by 4:30am. We used our headlamps as we climbed in the dark for the first couple of hours. The sun rose as we reached the snow line and cast magnificent shadows of our moving bodies against the white snow and ice. The mountain moved from dark and unknown into a warming orange morning light that invited us excitingly to continue our way up and up.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD The next morning, we had an early start to the first rafting day. Our guides prepared a breakfast of fresh fruit, granola, and yogurt to fuel us for a full day on the water. After a safety lesson our eager crew was ready to raft! We pushed off from shore with wide eyes and a thirst for adventure. Everyone marveled at the depth of the gorge the Apurimac carved over thousands of years. All day the canyon walls towered over our group, echoing our laughter and cries of triumph as we paddled through each rapid. As our first day of rafting came to a close we took a moment to appreciate the nightsky filled with stars. Everyone lined up on the banks and laid back, counting shooting stars and describing constellations that we created ourselves.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD On Thursday, we traveled down the highway to Hana. Along these roads, the geography evolved from one of grassland and views of the coastline into the jungles of Maui. The flora and fauna were breathtaking, and we saw a number of peacocks, wild chickens and prawns as we ventured towards rappelling down our first waterfall. Although intimidating at first, the group conquered all three cliffs of the day. That night, we cooked a pizza bagel dinner and left our campsite early enough to reach Haleakala for the evening’s sunset. The students were in utter awe; the various hues of the sky and rocky terrain gave a Mars-like feel to the night. We ended our time at the top of Haleakala with a wonderful Moonup. What an experience for us all-as we descended the 10,000 foot volcano, the kids were pumped and ready for the next day’s activities.

NOTES FROM THE FIELD The next day we set out for another morning game drive, watching the sunrise from the edge of a large lake. Not appreciated enough is the South African wildlife. The trees surrounding the water were filled with bright colored swallows, dark falcons, and chirping canaries. After taking in the view, and experiencing another amazing drive in which we encountered a group of thumping wild elephant, we headed back to camp to pack for our sleep out. Packed and ready to go, we headed out into the bush. After two hours of driving through the African plains, teaming with wildlife, we came to our campsite. As we crossed a path and slid between a large tree break, I heard a student call out “rhinos!”. She had spotted four rhino in the open field next to our prospective campsite. We watched as they explored for a bit, and then retreated into the thick bush.

To secure a spot, you must submit your online application along with a $1000 deposit. We have a limited number of openings for each trip and applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Our Admissions team will then call you to confirm whether space is available and explain what’s next in our enrollment process. If we cannot place you in a trip group, the deposit will be refunded. For students new to Moondance, we require two teacher references to ensure that your child is physically, emotionally, and behaviorally able to participate in a Moondance program before official acceptance. Moondance will not accept students who are unable or unwilling to maintain a group dynamic grounded in teamwork, challenge, respect, care for others, and self-reliance. We’ll share access to our online portal for trip forms and information such as medical forms and flight information. Failure to return these in a timely manner will jeopardize your space. IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS We are proud that Moondance seeks positive, wholesome, enthusiastic, motivated, and team-oriented individuals. Moondance is not a program for students with behavioral, motivational, or substance abuse issues, nor are we a continuation of a therapeutic, vocational or rehabilitation program.
