Meet Dr Sarah Tullis & Mrs Beccy Newton

The Abbey Junior and Senior Schools have long been recognised for their academic excellence, but at the heart of their success lies something even more important—joyful and inspiring learning experiences that shape confident, curious, and independent young women.

When Dr Sarah Tullis takes on the role of Head of The Abbey School in September 2025, she will remain as committed as ever to her vision.

“Education isn’t just about achieving top results; it’s about equipping our students with the mindset and skills they need to thrive,” says Dr Tullis. “We’re committed to creating a school where girls have genuine autonomy and choice in their education”.

Mrs Beccy Newton, who will be leading the Junior School, believes that early education should spark a lifelong love of learning. “I want children to adore learning, to be excited every day about what’s ahead in the classroom. Our curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, curiosity, and resilience,” she says.

At The Abbey, students benefit from an environment where learning is enriched by opportunities beyond the classroom—be it through STEM initiatives, the performing arts, or outdoor exploration. “We want our students to develop independence, leadership skills, and a sense of adventure,” Dr Tullis adds.

As both Heads prepare to lead The Abbey into a new era, their focus remains clear—ensuring students leave not only with excellent academic achievements but as confident, well-rounded individuals ready to make a meaningful impact in the world.

Q&A with Sarah Tullis & Beccy Newton –

The

Abbey’s New Heads

Interviewer: What excites you most about stepping into your new roles at The Abbey?

Sarah Tullis: The Abbey is such a special place, and I feel incredibly privileged to lead a school with such a strong community, rich history, and forward-thinking approach. What excites me most is building on our ethos of academic excellence while ensuring every student feels empowered, valued, and ready for the future.

Beccy Newton: For me, it’s the opportunity to create an environment where children absolutely adore learning. The Abbey Junior School already has a wonderful foundation, and I’m excited to shape a curriculum that’s creative, inspiring, and filled with opportunities for growth.

Interviewer: What do you believe makes The Abbey unique?

Sarah Tullis: The Abbey balances high achievement with a deep sense of joy. It’s not just about the results – it’s about how we get there. The culture of curiosity, kindness, and confidence makes it an extraordinary place.

Beccy Newton: I agree! The all-girls environment allows students to grow without limitations. They develop confidence, independence, and a strong sense of self, all while being supported by an incredible teaching staff.

Interviewer: What’s your vision for the future of The Abbey?

Sarah Tullis: To ensure every student feels prepared for a world that’s constantly evolving.

Beccy Newton: And to make sure every child’s journey is filled with excitement, discovery, and a love for learning!

Students take to the stage in Windsor

Students at St George’s School Windsor Castle took to the stage in Windsor’s much-loved community arts centre The Old Court for their highly acclaimed recent school productions. Performing musical interpretations of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the Year 5 children brought their characters to life with real enthusiasm and aplomb.

The school’s Head, Emma Károlyi, commented “It was a spectacular showcase of so much talent, from singing, to acting, to precision comic timing! A huge well done to all the children, the staff involved and to our Head of Drama, for such a brilliant evening.”

In addition to performing to a packed audience on the night, the students were able to inspire their Year 4 counterparts through an earlier dress rehearsal. “I would give it an official rating of a million out of ten”, one of them declared! W: www.stgwindsor.org

The Acorn Centre at St Joseph’s builds a strong foundation

At St Joseph’s College, they offer year-round care in an engaging environment where children are inspired to thrive. With abundant outdoor play time, nutritious meals, and personalised attention, they nurture every child’s growth and development. The structured days include phonics and mark-making activities, gently preparing little ones for Reception. Their goal is to build a strong foundation for confidence and learning while ensuring each day is filled with fun and discovery. Wrap around care is also provided, and childcare vouchers are accepted. Give your child the best start at St Joseph’s College. There is also the opportunity to join one of their Stay and Play events, suitable for children aged 2-4 years, which is a great chance to engage with the Pre-Reception teachers. A student project at Dolphin School wins award

During the Summer Term 2024, a group of brave students from Dolphin School embarked on a project of active hope called ‘Time Bandits’. Each week they visited residents living with dementia in a local care home, Henley Manor, to engage in a variety of Arts activities. The aim of the club was to push the boundaries of inter-generational and arts work by moving away from highly structured activities. Instead, Time Bandits offered a more flexible and relationship-centred approach in which club members decided on their activities themselves. It was surprisingly successful with all ‘bandits’ experiencing joy, humour and human connection. The project was subsequently nominated for a national award – the Working Together Award – judged by NAPA (National Activities Providers Association). Three students and one teacher made the trek up to Liverpool on Friday 24th January, for a glitzy ceremony, where they were delighted to learn that they had won the award! Staff at Dolphin School could not be more proud of those students and teachers involved, and the recognition from NAPA of their valuable contribution to helping dementia sufferers in the local community. When asked how she was feeling having won the award, young bandit Seren exclaimed ‘Amazing!’. W: www.dolphinschool.com

Pupils celebrated World Book Day at Caversham Park Primary

The children at Caversham Park Primary School recently enjoyed celebrating World Book Day by dressing up as some of their favourite book characters and taking part in a range of book-related activities throughout the day. Harry Potters and Where’s Wally spent the day alongside story book princesses and Paddington Bear to name but a few. Many children also took potatoes into school that they had decorated as a children’s book character – creativity and imagination was in abundance! W: www.cavershamparkprimaryschool.co.uk

Benefits of attending a pre-school nursery

Attending a pre-school nursery offers numerous benefits for young children. It provides a structured environment where a routine is implemented into their daily lives. Giving children structure to their day helps children to gain a sense of security and independence. This supports and provides a strong foundation in preparing children for the transitional to Reception.

From a young age, children follow a curriculum. Essentially their learning is achieved through the application of Development Matters – Non-statutory curriculum guidance for the early years foundation stage which is followed and implemented by experienced teaching professionals, who introduce children to basic academic concepts through play-based learning. Children are also exposed to Early Literacy and Numeracy Skills. Children are introduced to basic concepts of letters, numbers, shapes, and colours to lay the foundation for future academic learning and to foster cognitive development, a love for learning and, most of all, a concrete foundation to become their best self and reach their full potential. Alongside this, at Little Acorns Nursery at Crosfields School, there is a focus on the child’s individual needs and interests. It is important for every Early Years educator to recognise that every child is unique and has their own strengths and abilities which in turn provide children the tools they need to flourish in all areas of development.

Enhancing Children’s Social Skills

Through attending a nursery setting, children develop their social skills by learning to interact with peers and adults, sharing, taking turns, and resolving conflicts which is laying the foundation for healthy, long-term positive relationships.

Nurturing Emotional Skills

Our nursery provides a safe and nurturing environment where children can manage their own emotions, develop empathy, as well as building self-confidence. Children are also supported in having a deeper understanding of their feelings, along with better selfawareness, self-regulation, and resilience.

Language Development Skills

At Little Acorns Nursery, children actively engage in a variety of activities to promote and develop their language skills. Our Early Years practitioners model correct use of language and vocabulary, further encouraging children to expand their own vocabulary. As a result, this improves and develops their communication, listening and comprehension skills.

Accelerated Physical Development

Young children engage in more physical activities at nursery than they might at home; for example, running in the playground or learning skills such as skipping or hopping. At Little Acorns, children are immersed in a variety of activities such as Forest School, swimming, dance and PE, which are all taught by specialist teachers. Through these opportunities, children are also able to develop their gross motor skills which supports their coordination, balance and strength.

Overall, pre-school nurseries provide a fundamental foundation for children’s educational journey. Here, at Little Acorns Nursery, we are proud of our drive, determination and ambition in providing a safe, positive, nurturing environment to support your child’s emotional, social, and intellectual growth in the lead up to their transition to Reception.
