Routine Vaccinations
You may already know about routine vaccinations offered by your GP surgery or Community Pharmacy: MMR (measles, mumps and rubella), whooping cough vaccine for mums-to-be and little ones, and seasonal flu boosters, but what if you’re not sure which vaccines you or your child have already had?
Adults can now access their vaccine status via the NHS app, and you can always ask your GP practice to look up your child’s vaccine record. They will be happy to help you book a catch-up vaccine if one is needed. With summer days a distant memory and winter lurking, make sure you and your family boost your protection this winter. Visit www.bobicb.com/fluvaccine

MORE VOLUNTEERS TO HELP CHILDREN TO READ AND MORE BERKSHIRE SCHOOLS TO PARTNER WITH
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, ABC to read is the only award-winning charity in Berkshire set up to help children gain confidence in reading and it is their mission to attract more volunteers and work with even more schools this year. They aim to provide trained, vetted and supported reading mentors across Berkshire schools to work with children who are struggling with their reading. In recent surveys, 98% of children improved in reading performance, 97% improved their attitude to read, and 100% of children’s overall achievement was raised. ABC to read have transformed children’s lives since 2004. The volunteers include teachers and a variety of people from the community who help with their time and expertise. ABC to read supports over 500 Berkshire children each week with comprehensive, quality 1-1 support. The volunteers come to school twice a week and spend half an hour with each child, playing word games, reading and boosting their confidence and skills. The charity also delivers workshops to parents, 6th form students and to older students with the aim to support children and younger peers for whom reading is a challenge. For any new volunteers wanting more information or to take part in training days, or to join the scheme as a school, please contact E: info@abctoread.org.uk T: 0118 9511336

Stories of a Watersprite is on at Arlington Arts this autumn
Amongst drifting waterweed and ancient moss-covered rocks, a Watersprite awakens. Down here the pond is teeming with life – newts and snails and little silver fish dart around, busy with their business. But strange things are starting to enter the pond. Things that crinkle and clatter and clutter up the pond. So much of it that there is no more space to swim and slither around. Sophie Nüzel’s work for children and families is a gentle and multi-sensory dance and puppetry production. It invites young audiences to use their imagination and believe that regardless of how little they are they can still make a difference.
This is a relaxed performance on Saturday 12th October, perfect for families with children aged 4-10, with an embedded audio described introduction. Arlington Arts Centre is on the site of Mary Hare School and you can book tickets online now! W: www.arlington-arts.com

School GUIDE
It is the time or year where parents of Year 6 pupils need to apply for secondary school places. We have listed schools across the county in this handy guide, and look out for details of Open Days too.
Choosing a secondary school: Some questions to ask!
Primary Times is committed to helping you make the best choice of secondary school for your child
Secondary education is almost always very different in approach to primary education and choosing a secondary school for your child is a really tough and high-pressured decision. Exam results are important but you need to know whether the school you are thinking about is a school you believe that your child can thrive in.
To a great extent the questions parents need to ask prospective secondary schools are about how well the school will meet the needs of your child. So, if your child has specific needs, even if it is about making and keeping friends, then ask the secondary school what pastoral support is in place to help develop and encourage friendships.
Great secondary schools often have a head of year who follows the year group as they move through school. In our case, we know that we can email the head of year and he will follow up any concerns as the school wants the children to be happy and settled which will help them to achieve their best.
I’d also be asking about where students go on to after Year 11 (if the school has no sixth form). Talking to sixth form colleges about how well prepared the students who come from secondary schools are, is an important consideration.
Finally, the school where your child has been educated for the past seven years will know your child and will know the local secondary schools. Ask the school head which secondary school your child would be best attending and why. It will give you another perspective as to how well your child might settle and learn.
Making decisions about your child’s future secondary school, based on the narrow measures from Ofsted and DfE is only part of the picture. It’s worth doing the legwork as described above as this is the school that will support your child over the next 5 years and onto GCSEs.
