As well as big family days out, and local or exotic holidays planned, make the time for affordable, relaxed days too. You’ll find plenty of free town and shopping centre activities to enjoy – add in walks and picnics in the park and you’ll have the perfect recipe for a memorable summer! In this issue, you can also catch up on the latest news snippets, browse our diary pages of what’s-on-when and don’t miss the chance to win some excellent prizes on our competition page.

Finally, goodbye and good luck to the Year Six leavers and parents who are moving on to Secondary School. We’re sure they are well prepared for their next move and hope the transition is a smooth and happy one.

We’ll be back in September, but in the meantime, sun cream at the ready and fingers crossed for a warm, action-packed summer for you all.

Summer of Play with the National Trust in Berkshire

Kicking off in July, taking place over the summer holidays, and set against the backdrop of the National Trust’s historic houses and beautiful gardens and estates around Berkshire, Summer of Play activities will have a family-festival feel.

Cliveden’s Ilex Grove is transformed for the summer into the ‘Games Grove’. You’ll find traditional garden games like giant Jenga, tug-of-war and bean bag toss. Elm Field near the Woodlands Lounge is the ‘Exploration Zone’. There’s lots of space for free-thinking, free-play opportunities with a build your own obstacle course, giant building blocks and a nature music station.

Basildon Park’s Games Gazebo at the picnic area is jam-packed with games kits to take onto the lawn in front of the mansion. Play badminton, bat and ball, French cricket or wooden throwing games like Kubb or Molkky. The wild play trail in the woodland is being refreshed for 2024 with wooden play equipment, opportunities for den building and the ever-popular ball runs. There will be bookable den building workshops on selected days. Greys Court is layered with history and its Summer of Play explores themes of history and heraldry overlooked by its medieval tower. There are active games inspired by crossing moats, target practice and tumbling towers along with craft activities.

Supporting money learning at home

According to Cambridge University, children’s attitudes to money are established by the age of seven. Learning about money at school is crucial, but it’s just one piece of the puzzle – parents and guardians can have a big impact, too!

Playing money-related games, setting challenges (for example, buying a friend or relative a birthday gift for a set amount), and handling coins, cash, and cards are all brilliant ways to develop awareness. Opening a suitable savings account so they have a place to watch the pennies grow is another way to encourage interest in and understanding of saving. Whatever they’re saving for, Newbury Building Society’s junior savings accounts can help your children to look after their pennies. For information about savings accounts for young people, pop into your local branch, or book an appointment online. Appointments are available in person, online, or over the phone. Great efforts to ensure new resources at Caversham Park Primary

The Parent Staff Association (PSA) at Caversham Park Primary School have been working hard all year, raising funds for this lovely community school. Events have included an Autumn Disco for pupils, a Christmas Market for pupils and their families (even the man in red made an appearance), and there is a Summer Family Barbeque coming up soon!

During the winter the school were able to purchase several different resources to aid the children’s learning. These included a range of non-fiction books, sensory resources for SEND use, globes and musical instruments to enhance the geography and music curriculum, plus a new television screen for their ICT suite! Since then, funds have enabled the school to invest in new fiction books, toys for both playgrounds, and a large sandpit for the Reception and Key Stage One playground. Anyone wishing to learn more about Caversham Park Primary School can arrange a tour with the headteacher Miss Ray. W: www.cavershamparkprimaryschool.co.uk
