‘ VIBRANT AND WELCOMING’: STOCKPORT GRAMMAR INSPECTION
As 2023 drew to a close, Stockport Grammar School was extra busy with a visit from the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (ISI), as part of their routine programme of inspections. Now the results are in, with flying colours! Stockport Grammar met all the ISI standards, and, across the Junior and Senior School, the report is full of praise for the school’s quality of education, pupil wellbeing and co-curricular activities. ‘Vibrant and welcoming community’, ‘children are happy and thriving’, ‘teaching is stimulating and elicits enthusiastic responses’, ‘an extensive selection of co-curricular activities’ and ‘well prepared for life beyond school’ are just some of the Inspectors’ comments. The full report is available to read on the school’s website.

CHILDREN MAKE THE TOP GRADE
The recent Department for Education report on assessments of children’s development in the summer term of their Reception year shows that at Bolton School, 91% of children make the top grade, called a Good Level of Development (GLD). Nationally this figure is 67.2%. A delighted Mrs Field, Head of Infant School, said: “The high GLD figure has been achieved by experienced, highly-skilled and dedicated teachers creating learning opportunities to engage and excite our youngest learners from the moment they arrive. We’re particularly proud of the writing development we provide, which has resulted in writing profiles far exceeding local and national percentages!”

HALLÉ FAMILY CONCERT: THE MUSICAL STORY OF ENIGMA AT THE BRIDGEWATER HALL
Fun, lively and sometimes a little bit cheeky, Elgar’s Enigma Variations is one of the most famous pieces of music ever written for a symphony orchestra and it is coming to The Bridgwater Hall in May. Edward Elgar, a composer who lived in the English countryside with his wife, Alice, came home after a long day teaching music and started playing around on the piano. His wife liked the tune he had made up and asked him to play it again. This tune went on to become the Enigma Variations. The music keeps coming back to that original tune, but Elgar developed it so each section represented his friends and family.
Tom Redmond and the Hallé, conducted by Sir Mark Elder, will take you on a tour of this intriguing work, learning the stories behind the music. The concert is on at 12noon and tickets can be booked online. W: www.halle.co.uk
