Honoring MoonshotCar Thinker
Carolyn Shoemaker Original Flagstaff Moonshot Thinker We're proud to honor Carolyn Shoemaker for her extraordinary moonshot thinking and phenomenal achievement in astrogeology. She and her husband, Gene, established the USGS Center for Astrogeology. At one time, Carolyn Shoemaker held the record for the most comet discoveries (32) in addition to more than 800 asteroids and 377 numbered minor planets. One of the fascinating aspects of her work is that Shoemaker, who had been a teacher and a full-time homemaker had never been interested in science in her youth. She began her career in astronomy at the age of 51.
