Where Next?

For me, travel is essential. It’s been a joy and a passion as far back as I can remember. Two men were primarily responsible for igniting this wanderlust: my father and my uncle.

Despite not vacationing much with his parents or siblings, my dad nonetheless got the itch for adventure as a young man and never stopped exploring. I recall looking at his photo albums as a kid, marveling at his European escapades—particularly a black-and-white photo of him in a trench coat holding a pipe with Big Ben in the background. So very Bond. He shared his love of travel with me through yearly vacations with the family—Tahoe, Canada, motorhome trips through the West, Disney World, Hawaii—no two trips alike.

Once I graduated high school, my uncle took over as guide—escorting me on my first European tour. Together we’ve revisited many of those destinations and discovered a few new ones, making it a priority to enjoy at least one joint excursion a year. This fall it will be the Tetons at his request.

Next year my dad will take us all to Ireland (a first for me) to survey our ancestral roots. All this will follow a

big trip I’ve planned for myself to Greece this summer. Clearly, the apple did not fall far from the tree.

It’s fitting that this issue not only celebrates South Bay men making an impact in the community but also the debut of our new Getaways sections. We’re honored to have the inspiring Greg Browning on the cover, just a month or so after his well-deserved induction into the Hermosa Beach Walk of Fame. Also featured are talented musicians, tequila makers, a young mountain climber and the one-and-only Chef David Slay.

In Getaways, uncover travel ideas as close to home as a California road trip and as far away as European hot spot Portugal. And there’s always the sublime staycation, where the pleasures of a South Bay summer await right outside your door.

No matter your destination, we hope it’s a fulfilling season for all.

WHAT SOME OF OUR FAVORITE LOCALS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT LIFE IN THE SOUTH BAY.

How do you celebrate Father’s Day?

Spent with the legend Steve Campbell! Usually Manhattan Beach Community Church at 10 a.m., followed by Chart House brunch in Redondo Beach, then a movie or a Sunday afternoon drive. I enjoy dinner at the parents’ on Laurel Avenue at night and some Handel’s Ice Cream as a treat to close out the day. My dad and I are both addicted to their chocolate milkshakes!

What local dining spots top your list these days?

As a fan of Southeast Asian cuisine, it’s exciting to see new restaurants like Dumpling Mix open. Try the dumplings and the potato-wrapped shrimp. Also head to Little Sister in the Riviera Village for the Vietnamese chicken salad, sugarcane lemongrass pork skewers and rice paper summer rolls.

What’s your idea of the perfect staycation?

A two-night stay at Terranea on a Santa Ana-summer weather day, lounging by the pool and walking the tide pools, while the grandparents graciously watch the kid. (Still waiting for that to happen!)

What’s your favorite travel getaway?

We just went to Greece—Athens, Santorini and Mykonos—last year, and it was a dream! We fell in love with the people, history, food and picturesque views. It truly was beautiful, and we can’t wait to go back.

Slay Street

WITH A SERIES OF POPULAR RESTAURANTS ON BUSTLING MANHATTAN AVENUE, CHEF DAVID SLAY BECOMES A WELCOME FIXTURE FOR A HUNGRY AND SOCIABLE SOUTH BAY.

Many nights a week, a handsome gentleman can be spotted walking briskly along three blocks of Manhattan Avenue in Manhattan Beach. He stops every few feet to shake hands or have a quick chat, like an ambassador on a mission.

This is David Slay, owner of four thriving restaurants in a straight line between Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach—Slay Steak + Fish House, Slay Italian Kitchen, Fête and Slay Hermosa—as well as a vineyard and special events estate nestled in the hills near Santa Barbara wine country. With a flock of white hair, grey-blue inquiring eyes and a boyish smile, he charms instantly—displaying both humility and a kind heart.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a Lebanese father (also a restaurateur) and an Irish mother, David grew up with six siblings and enjoyed simple but delicious home-cooked food. Sunday dinners were never to be missed, manners were nonnegotiable, and daily family gatherings around the table provided nourishment and conversation. David started to work in his father’s restaurant kitchens at age 11 and never looked back.

Chef David has dedicated his life to creating unique environments for food and celebration. The many aspects of his success and the number of highly acclaimed venues he has opened over the years are impressive. But what makes David shine is the passion with which he speaks about his clients and the deep appreciation he feels for their patronage.

“Food unites people,” he says. “I want to honor them for choosing my restaurants and express my gratitude.”

Each day from the moment he wakes up, Chef David devotes time to learning about the client list of the day and giving orders to his staff about the clients’ preferences and needs. He writes notes about any customer he meets so he can remember what they like when they return. With four buzzing restaurants in two neighboring towns, this is no small feat.

Chef David oversees, directs and curates the daily

business with ease and utter commitment. During the evening he dashes among the restaurants, greeting old and new customers with equal attention, sitting down for a quick chat, taking a gift of a bottle of Slay wine to a table or sending home dessert for a client’s kids. He is in all four kitchens throughout the night, tasting the food to ensure it is up to his expectation of uncompromising perfection. And he is never quite satisfied, which is the fuel needed for excellence.

With mind-blowing attention to detail, a sincere respect for people and a profound dedication to all aspects of the business, Chef David stands out in the world of restaurateurs. He is equally generous with his time and money. During COVID-19, he regularly sent pizzas to the Manhattan Beach retail community. He is loyal to his purveyors and motivating to his expertly trained staff, who draw inspiration from their boss. He promotes and values a hunger for learning.

“Ishmael started as a dishwasher,” he shares, “but he was always curious about everything in the kitchen, so I gave him a chance to grow. Today he is one of my best young chefs.”

Every three months the restaurants get fully repainted, and daily maintenance and cleaning crews ensure things look brand new across the venues. Gale, David’s wife and the mother of his three children, remains instrumental in the design, decor and overall aesthetic of the restaurants, taking care of the flowers and other details. Though these small touches result in a high overhead, Chef David believes there are no shortcuts to excelling at what you do.

Slay Estate & Vineyard is another love child for David. Founded in 2017, it was the natural culmination of his longtime passion for winemaking and his desire to have his own delicious wine to serve clients and friends at his restaurants. Working one-on-one with the winemakers brings immense joy to his busy life.

The vineyard produces 3,000 cases of wine annually—pinot noir, chardonnay and rosé—some of which is served at the restaurants and given as gifts. Chef David generously waives the cork fee at his restaurants to facilitate a wonderful dining experience that sometimes

includes a beloved bottle from clients’ own cellars.

His estate also boasts farmland with sustainably grown vegetables, and a beautiful event space that hosts weddings and private events with his signature style and beauty.

With such success, what keeps a chef and businessman of this caliber grounded and humble? David reminisces that his family-oriented upbringing and the values taught by his parents were certainly a good start. Growing up in restaurant kitchens and being part of a big family taught him the need for multitasking, impeccable organization, delegation and teamwork. With a smile, he remembers his mother allowing him to cook for the family one night when he was barely 14; he used every single pan and pot to create the simple but delicious meal.

At age 18, David apprenticed at Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas. He learned from maître d’ Luigi Piccone and food and beverage manager Victor Greger—two elegant, worldly gentlemen working the restaurant scene like champions. This was the glamorous Vegas of the late ’70s—Frank Sinatra, gambling and innovative food. Luigi and Victor spoke multiple languages, and David watched with awe how effortlessly they greeted their international high-rolling clients—each in their own language. A seed was planted as to how he wanted to host his clients one day.

An event that gravely marked his life was his father’s brutal murder in his own St. Louis restaurant by some of his employees. David, who was barely 20 at the time, found his father as he entered the restaurant. He shares with deep sadness in his eyes that the image will never leave him.

Yet the event taught him valuable lessons, requiring strength, positivity and resilience to overcome. Although devastated by this loss, he continued to pursue his path

and opened his first restaurant—a small French café with no liquor license (he was not yet 21!).

“This tragedy did not stop me from moving forward,” David says, “because I wanted to continue my father’s legacy and—even if he could not witness my success—make him proud.”

When you visit his restaurants, you notice their diversity in decor and menu, yet they all have a warm, neighborhood feel. Chef David creates healthy, simple, clean and delicious dishes at all of his venues and, to this day, loves to be in the kitchen, cooking and teaching. He thrives on interactions with his clients, purveyors, staff and neighboring restaurateurs.

“I love what I do,” he shares. “I am immersed in my restaurants and the vineyard. I work hard to keep my 200 employees motivated and my customers happy. I live in a wonderful beach community with great camaraderie among the merchants. I am not afraid of challenges. I welcome them.”

He loves to work alone and has never searched for business partners. “I spend a lot of time thinking about what people want and what concepts work. In those moments, solutions and creative ideas come to me with ease.”

Despite his focus on work, the most important thing in life is his family. He is very proud of his three children and the fact that they get along extremely well. Daily family dinners reminiscent of his upbringing have kept the family close even though Chef David runs a business that does not end until late at night.

When asked about future plans, his face breaks into that boyish smile. “I believe I have two to three more new restaurants in me. My footprint works. I own and fund my businesses and keep things controllable. And I have too much fun. I am not ready to stop creating.” ■

The Alchemist

KENNETH GRAY’S TECHNIQUE OF REPROOFING ALCOHOL AT REDONDO’S SALT & PEARL SKILLFULLY MIXES ART AND SCIENCE.

As part of his morning meditation, Kenneth Gray begins every day asking two questions: “How can I change someone’s day today for the better?” and “How can I allow someone to change my day for the better?”

This positive repetition enables neuropath rewiring called auto inquisition, moving consciousness from a perceptive state to a perspective state. Spend a little time with Kenneth, and he’ll speak of perspective over perception and EQ over IQ. These concepts are central to his hospitality philosophy and how he inspires his service

staff. They also offer a window into his character.

Kenneth’s perspective has been shaped by his remarkable life path. At 46, he’s seen and done more things than most could fathom experiencing in two lifetimes. Kenneth survived an impoverished childhood and multiple near-death experiences; he’s raised three wonderful children; he’s traveled the world; he’s helped build several successful businesses; and he’s mentored and inspired countless hospitality colleagues.

While living in Phoenix, Kenneth designed the

margarita program for VIDA Modern Mexican + Tequila and his longtime friends Justin Essman and Mickey Mance, owners of Bella Vita Hospitality.

“The goal was to create something memorable and dynamic for super-fast casual with no time or space for prep. We did it and they loved it,” he shares. “I knew Justin and Mickey for years. So when they decided to open Salt & Pearl, they hit me up to consult and asked if I’d be interested in moving back permanently and being the beverage director for the company as a whole. Plus they told me Alex Schwartzman would be our chef. I jumped at the chance. They’re two of the smartest, most compassionate individuals you’ll ever meet.”

Justin and Mickey gave Kenneth carte blanche to run Salt & Pearl’s beverage program exactly as he wished, with no constraints. Kenneth has honed an unconventional approach to hospitality over the years, and he had developed an innovative concept for designing a cocktail list he’d been waiting to do. Salt & Pearl finally gave him an opportunity to create his dream beverage program. As he explains, “For 15 years I’d been pocketing this menu because I got called crazy.”

The innovative technique Kenneth brings to Salt & Pearl is reproofing. Kenneth’s natural curiosity and science background led him to experiment with volumes of liquids and solids. He tinkered with a process called swapping, or switching, which applies the laws of osmosis and dissolution where an item such as an orange is flash frozen. Then a hole is cut in the bottom, and the orange is allowed to defrost. A pure liquid concentrate drains out of the orange while the fibers remain intact. If the exact same amount of liquid (alcohol, tea, another juice) is inserted back into the object and it’s refrozen, it will get infused at that concentration through osmosis.

Alas, switching requires a very expensive $100,000 freezer. Kenneth developed an alternative to switching called reproofing. The science is essentially the same, but the process is decidedly simpler and doesn’t require freezing. Rather than start with a standard 80 alcohol by volume (ABV) proof liquor, he starts with a much higher ABV liquor. Using basic math, he brings that ABV

“HOSPITALITY IS WHY I HAVE CONTINUED TO DO THIS FOR 25 YEARS. THE COOL DRINKS, THE FUN REPROOFING, THAT’S THE CONDUIT. THAT’S HOW THE INFO IS SHARED. BUT I WANT PEOPLE TO VIEW US AS THEIR FRIENDS AND COME TO SEE US. COME FOR THE CONVERSATION.”

down to 80 proof, leaving the integrity of the finished cocktail intact with a complex array of flavors without being diluted.

As Kenneth adds, “I wish I could make it more complicated and sexy for you, but it’s easy math.”

While chatting, he expresses that he doesn’t really want to be remembered for his drinks. “Hospitality is why I have continued to do this for 25 years. The cool drinks, the fun reproofing, that’s the conduit. That’s how the info is shared,” he says. “But I want people to view us as their friends and come to see us. Come for the conversation.” ■

Manhattan Beach’s Pamela Salzman is a cooking instructor, cookbook author, holistic health counselor and food blogger. Pamela shares her family-friendly recipes and nutrition tips on her social media channels and her website, where she also offers cooking classes and courses.

“Chinese Chicken Salad is one of my most beloved recipes from Quicker Than Quick,” she says. “You can swap in precooked rotisserie chicken if you like. And you can swap in tahini for the cashew butter in the dressing.”

CHINESE CHICKEN SALAD

serves 6–8

2 bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts

4 garlic cloves, smashed

½ teaspoon black peppercorns

1-inch piece fresh ginger, sliced into rounds

1 tablespoon kosher salt

6 cups chopped Savoy or Napa cabbage

4 cups chopped romaine lettuce

2 cups thinly sliced red cabbage (about 1/8 medium head)

1 large carrot, grated or julienned

1 cup mandarin orange segments

½ cup slivered almonds, lightly toasted

Dressing

6 tablespoons unseasoned rice vinegar

3 tablespoons unrefined, cold-pressed extravirgin olive oil

3 tablespoons pure grade A maple syrup, mild raw honey or cane sugar

1½ tablespoons raw cashew butter (or add an extra 1½ tablespoons of olive oil)

¾ teaspoon toasted sesame oil

¾ teaspoon chili-garlic sauce (such as sriracha)

1¼ teaspoons sea salt

¾ teaspoon minced garlic, about 1 medium clove

⅜ teaspoon ground ginger

To poach chicken, place it in a saucepan with the garlic, peppercorns, ginger and salt and add water to cover. Bring to a boil over high heat, reduce to low, cover and simmer until the chicken is cooked through, about 25 minutes. Allow chicken to cool in the poaching liquid for 20 minutes. Remove the skin and bones and shred the meat into bite-size pieces. Add chicken and remaining salad ingredients to a large serving bowl.

To make the dressing, whisk all ingredients in a bowl or shake in a glass jar with a screw-top lid. Pour enough dressing over the salad to coat lightly and toss.

ZUCCHINI NOODLES WITH PESTO & TOMATO

serves 4

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

2 cups baby grape tomatoes, rinsed

2 (10-ounce) containers zucchini noodles or 4-5 large zucchinis spiralized

½ cup Pumpkin Seed Pesto (see recipe below)

a pinch of sea salt

a pinch of black pepper

¼ cup raw pumpkin seeds

Almond Ricotta for topping (optional, see recipe below)

Heat olive oil in a medium sauté pan over medium-high heat.

Add tomatoes and cook for about 5 minutes until skins start to blister and soften, being careful not to burn them. Add zucchini noodles and cook for 1 minute. In a medium bowl, combine zucchini-tomato mixture with pesto, salt and pepper and mix until the noodles are coated. Plate the noodles and top with pumpkin seeds add big spoonfuls of almond ricotta.

Pumpkin Seed Pesto

2 cups basil

½ cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

1 clove garlic

¾ cup activated pumpkin seeds

¼ cup sliced almonds

juice from 1 orange (about 3 tablespoons)

1 tablespoon lemon juice

½ teaspoon sea salt

¼ teaspoon black pepper

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth, about 2 minutes.

Almond Ricotta

2 cups peeled almonds, soaked for at least 6 hours, then strained

¾ cup filtered water

3 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon sea salt

Combine almonds with the rest of the ingredients in a highspeed blender until creamy.

“For June and Father’s Day, I’m sharing my Fajitas 4 Ways recipe,” she says. ■

FAJITAS 4 WAYS serves 6-8

1–2 pounds grilled grass-fed skirt steak or 2 cups roasted chicken or 1 pound whitefish or 2 cups cauliflower

2–3 teaspoons fajita seasoning blend

1 teaspoon garlic granules

1 teaspoon Celtic sea salt

2–3 tablespoons avocado oil

2 yellow onions, sliced

2 colorful bell peppers, sliced

½ jalapeño or serrano chili, finely chopped

3–4 garlic cloves, minced

Juice of 1–2 limes (about ¼ cup)

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1–2 tablespoons cilantro, minced

6 gluten-free or grain-free tortillas, warmed

Depending on what you choose, shred the cooked chicken, slice the raw meat into strips, leave the fish whole or chop the cauliflower. Season with fajita seasoning, garlic granules and sea salt. Heat a skillet over medium heat; add oil. Sauté onions, peppers and chili until soft, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook 5 minutes until caramelized. Add meat, fish or cauliflower to pan. Add lime juice, vinegar and salt to taste.

Cook on low heat for 10 to 15 minutes so flavors marry. The liquid should reduce so the fajitas are moist but not soaked. If it appears dry, taste and add a little more oil, balsamic or lime juice. Let your intuition decide! Garnish with cilantro just before serving with a plate of warmed tortillas.

Lightning in a Bottle

SOUTH BAY LOCAL ADAM CRAUN BRINGS WINEMAKING PROWESS TO HIS NEW TEQUILA VENTURE.

Wine and tequila. Two distinctly different products— one with a spirit of nuanced restraint and the other of unbridled edge. Enter El Negocio Tequila, and these opposites find common ground. The result is a beautiful tension of two worlds playing off each other’s strengths to create an unparalleled, premium, additive-free spirit unlike anything else.

The brand’s founder, Adam Craun, arrived at this moment through a blend of family history, life experience and a passion for quality alcohol. Growing up in Bethesda, Maryland, in a large Catholic family, he considers himself the black sheep who left for the West Coast. Adam now resides in Manhattan Beach with his wife and four children.

“My grandfather was an oncologist and worked for the National Institutes of Health,” says Adam. “He was the first person to use chemotherapy as a treatment for cancer. He’s the godfather of chemotherapy. And, well … I sell alcohol.”

Adam attended Boston University, where he swam competitively. During his freshman year, a close friend, Hayes Drumwright, began a shocking battle with cancer. This experience hit Adam with a stark reminder of life’s fragility.

“We were 18 years old, and you think you’re somewhat invincible as Division I athletes in college,” he says. “I had a preview at a very young age that we’re all just really, really lucky to be here.”

Not only did his friend make it through, but he also ultimately became Adam’s business partner in a wine business venture aptly named Memento Mori (Latin for “remember you’ll die.”) Adam adds, “Our translation is: remember to live.”

The third partner in Memento Mori is Adriel Lares,

whom Adam claims to be the smartest guy you’ll ever meet. “He’s kind of a serial CFO in Silicon Valley. And now he’s the CFO of Chelsea Football Club in London.

He’s a badass and the epitome of the American dream.”

Adam’s venture into wine stemmed from early explorations in Napa Valley. In the late 2000s he began spending more time in wine country when Adriel bought a timeshare there. “We met some of the farmers, as we had already drunk our way through the valley. So we kind of knew the grapes we wanted to buy,” he recalls. “We knew the best wines up there, and so we went directly to the farmers. We negotiated grapes, and in 2010 our first vintage of 150 bottled cases was released.”

Adam quit his day job and threw himself wholly into building Memento Mori. Though challenging to get off the ground, they pushed through many early setbacks. A trained artist, Adam was able to quickly come up with the label’s iconic gold logo.

With winemaker Sam Kaplan hard at work in the vineyards and cellar, Adam set out to get Memento Mori on the radar of every collector and the lists of the world’s top restaurants and wine retailers. Today Memento Mori is a highly sought-after, 100-point label with a stunning 17-acre estate home in Calistoga. And Sam is considered one of Napa Valley’s brightest stars.

With the experience accrued as a successful vintner, Adam soon set his sights on his other favorite beverage: tequila. Uniquely suited to understand the complexities of terroir, Adam realized there were no tequilas on the market that celebrated the type of vintage variation celebrated by wine collectors.

He found a like-minded tequila aficionado in Memento Mori’s very first client, entrepreneur Nicholas Lutz. On an early-2020 ski trip to Lake Tahoe’s

| 63

Northstar Resort, the two friends conceived of El Negocio and became partners in Adam’s latest venture.

El Negocio Tequila stems from a desire to create a unique, high-quality product while aiming to redefine the category. “I’ve had this idea about making a tequila but aging it like a wine,” explains Adam. “What the American consumer doesn’t know is that 93% of the tequilas in the United States have chemicals and additives in them. In the wine world, we would never add anything to the product to make it taste better. It is what it is. It’s supposed to be different, vintage to vintage. And so is tequila. The science of it is very similar. You wait for the fruit to mature, which we call the pineapple or the piña down. It takes from six to 10 years to mature, whereas the grape is seasonal—once a year. But it’s the same thing.”

With this mission in mind, the two tequila aficionados hired third-generation master distiller Chava Rosales. With Chava’s help, they’ve managed to craft

a tequila aged in French oak barrels—reminiscent of fine winemaking—while rejecting additives common in many tequilas.

El Negocio, which translates to “the business,” launched in November 2023. Though a new brand in a competitive market, it is gaining notoriety quickly. Robb Report magazine already classified El Negocio as the #1 sipping tequila in the country. Locals can find bottles at Manhattan Fine Wines and XSpeakeasy in Manhattan Beach.

The brand’s rapid success speaks volumes about the quality of the product and the expertise of the team behind it. As he looks to expand into other spirits, Adam remains grounded in the belief that each product must uphold the same standard of excellence. In that delicate dance between tradition and innovation where craftsmanship meets creativity, two incredible products took form. There’s no question that what comes next will emerge from that same ingenuity. ■

RJ SMITH

Owner/Founder, RJ Smith Construction & Development

Since 2003, RJ Smith has operated RJ Smith Construction, a boutique, full-service construction company in the South Bay. Recently he partnered with Brandon Gale, who brings more than two decades of international finance experience and a successful track record of real estate investment and development, to create RJ Smith Development, specializing in building luxury residences in premier locations.

HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO FORM THE NEW BUSINESS?

The concept for RJ Smith Development was conceived in late 2022 during our collaboration on the Gale family’s custom home. It quickly became apparent that Brandon and I shared a deep passion for building and business. By merging our extensive backgrounds in construction and finance, we provide a unique mix of operational excellence and strategic financial insight. This combination is perfectly suited for the luxury real estate market.

WHAT SETS RJ SMITH DEVELOPMENT APART?

Having two partners with complementary skill sets has significantly impacted our day-to-day work environment. My years of experience in building, design and construction, combined with Brandon’s years of expertise in finance, has truly been a game changer, especially in custom home building. From the initial stages of financial planning to addressing any issues that may arise during construction, having a balanced team can greatly enhance the overall success of the project.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT PROJECTS.

RJ Smith Development currently has three homes under construction in the Sand Section of Manhattan Beach—all of which are available for purchase. Situated in prime locations, each home is uniquely tailored, with every aspect meticulously chosen by our design team to offer the ideal blend of city living and tranquility. Further details about these projects can be found on our website.

WHAT LED TO YOUR CHOICE OF THIS CAREER FIELD?

From the start, my vision was clear: to build exceptional homes in the South Bay. Each year, my ambition drove me to push boundaries and strive for excellence. But I always felt like something was missing—the final puzzle piece. That missing piece turned out to be my now-partner, Brandon Gale. While my expertise lies in construction, design and development, Brandon excels in finance. When developing a spec home, financial acumen is paramount, and having a partner who complements my skills just makes sense.

WHAT'S THE KEY TO GOOD CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS?

Communication is key in any relationship, particularly with our RJ

Smith Development investors. Maintaining open and transparent communication with investors by keeping them updated about project progress and potential issues is essential. We treat them as we would like to be treated. Establishing clear expectations from the outset is also vital. This includes outlining project timelines, deliverables and costs to prevent misunderstandings and ensure alignment between both parties. Going the extra mile is paramount. Providing personalized attention to clients’ and investors' needs and wants demonstrates our commitment and can significantly strengthen our relationship with them.

WHAT ARE THE TOP TRAITS THAT MAKE A GREAT BUSINESS LEADER?

A strong business leader embodies a diverse range of qualities that are universally effective across various industries. However, the importance placed on specific traits can vary based on the unique nature, industry and challenges of each business. A focus on communication and a balance of vision and strategic thinking have benefited my team and myself.

HOW DO YOU ATTRACT AND RETAIN THE BRIGHTEST MINDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY TO BE ON YOUR TEAM?

Ensuring your workplace is enticing and providing avenues for growth and advancement is imperative for retaining top talent. Just as you scrutinize applicants’ resumes, remember they are evaluating your company too. Your brand’s strength is key. In today’s social media-driven world, your online presence is pivotal. Top talent seeks promising companies; ensure your brand reflects that.

HOW DO YOU PRIORITIZE TEAM CULTURE?

A strong team culture not only enhances employee satisfaction but also contributes to the overall success of our business. We encourage employees to share ideas, voice their opinions and work together to achieve common goals. This helps create a sense of belonging and unity within the team. Additionally, we prioritize team culture by recognizing and rewarding employees for their hard work and contributions. Whether it’s through monetary incentives, public recognition or other forms of appreciation, we believe in acknowledging the efforts of our team members and celebrating their successes. We aim to create a workplace where employees feel valued, motivated and inspired to do their best work.

TELL US

ABOUT YOUR

TIME OUTSIDE WORK.

Brandon and I prioritize family above all else. We are also dedicated to nurturing both our physical and mental well-being. Each day we set aside time to attend to these facets, understanding that balance is crucial for a satisfying life.

DAVID W. KELLINY, DDS

Endodontist/Owner,

Dr. David Kelliny and his team at Kelliny Endodontics specialize in root canal treatment and dental implants. Dr. Kelliny earned his bachelor’s degree in dental surgery from Cairo University in 1992; he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Southern California in 1998 and earned a certificate in endodontics, also from USC, in 2001. He started Kelliny Endodontics in 2001 and has worked as a dentist for 30 years.

Dr. Kelliny has been a part-time clinical assistant professor at the USC postgraduate endodontic program since 2002. He teaches residents about various aspects of endodontics with a specific emphasis on surgical endodontics, 3D endodontics and dental implants. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, the Western Los Angeles Dental Society, the American Association of Endodontists, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the International Congress of Implantologists. Dr. Kelliny is the inventor and patent holder of the Endodontic Access guide, which is used for treating extremely difficult endodontic cases.

WHAT LED TO YOUR CHOICE OF THIS CAREER FIELD?

Funny but true story: Growing up, I always wanted to be an engineer in avionics. When I was 15 years old, I broke my front tooth in an accident, and I had to get a root canal and a crown. I always liked working with my hands, and I did better in sciences and biology studies than in math and calculus. So I thought maybe I could do dentistry and be good at it.

HOW

DO

YOU PRIORITIZE TEAM CULTURE?

In dentistry as in any field, prioritizing team culture is essential for a thriving and successful practice. I try to foster clear, open and transparent communication among team members. I encourage regular team meetings where everyone can share ideas, concerns and feedback. I also try to share my vision and define the core values and vision of our practice to ensure that every team member understands and aligns with these values, as they serve as the foundation for our team culture. I also stress collaboration and teamwork among staff members and emphasize the importance of supporting one another, sharing responsibilities and working together toward common goals.

HOW DO YOU BUILD PATIENT CONNECTIONS?

Patient care is a priority in our practice. We take the time to build rapport with each patient by providing personalized care and demonstrating genuine interest in their well-being. We listen actively to their concerns, answer their questions, and address their needs with empathy and compassion. I ensure that our team

communicates clearly and effectively with patients, both in person and through other channels such as phone calls, emails and social media. We engage with patients beyond their appointments by sending personalized follow-up messages or educational materials. We utilize social media platforms to share valuable information, interact with patients, and showcase our practice’s personality and values. By prioritizing patient-centered care, effective communication, community involvement and professional networking, you can build strong connections within the dental industry that contribute to the success and growth of your practice.

TELL US ABOUT A RECENT MEDICAL DEVELOPMENT.

The GentleWave procedure is a new technology in endodontics, and it is revolutionizing the field by leveraging advanced technology to thoroughly clean and disinfect the root canal system with minimal disruption to surrounding tissue. Unlike traditional root canal techniques, the GentleWave system utilizes a combination of fluid dynamics and acoustic energy to efficiently remove bacteria, debris and infected tissue from even the most complex anatomy. This results in shorter treatment times, reduced postoperative discomfort and improved outcomes for patients. By expanding the range of cases that can be successfully treated with endodontics and enhancing patient comfort and satisfaction, the GentleWave procedure is setting a new standard for endodontic care, ultimately elevating the quality of dental treatment in the field.

HOW DO YOU PROMOTE WORK-LIFE BALANCE?

By respecting personal time and boundaries. I encourage team members to prioritize self-care and wellness to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.

I consider one of my most significant achievements to be the strong Trojan legacy within my family. I attended USC and was the class president for two years. My wife, Mary, graduated from USC at the top of her class in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene. Our son, Chris, earned his bachelor’s in communications from USC in 2000. Our daughter Kathryn is currently a D3 student at USC’s Ostrow School of Dentistry, and our youngest, Caroline, is a sophomore at USC studying biological sciences with aspirations for a pre-med degree.

My wife is also deeply engaged in philanthropy. She previously served as president of PV Junior Women’s Club, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting women and children in need in the South Bay community. Our family wholeheartedly supports her endeavors, recognizing the profound impact she and the dedicated members of PV Juniors have on the lives of others.

KC CAMPBELL

VOX DJs is a professional entertainment company that provides DJs and MCs, live auctioneers, lighting, photo booths and live music options for events. KC Campbell took over ownership of VOX DJs in 2008. A South Bay native, KC continues to build and grow the brand and company through a variety of local events and charitable causes.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS CAREER FIELD?

I remember DJing at Chadwick Middle School with my mentor Shawn Sedlacek when I was 14 years old. I watched him work the crowd—getting everyone jumping up and down and singing and going crazy. I thought, “I want to do this for my job, and I think I would be pretty good at this.” Let’s just say, I was hooked!

DESCRIBE YOUR LEADERSHIP STYLE.

My business partner, Ricky Hayes, and I are dedicated to our customers. We offer frequent communication, teamwork and positive encouragement with our 100 employees. We are detail-oriented and expect a lot, but we have a soft side and are up for a deep conversation at any time about life and how VOX DJs fits into it.

WHAT SERVICE DO YOU OFFER CLIENTS?

It is wonderful being in a business and industry where you never feel like you are selling anything. When planning an event, our clients need a great experience. Our team comes in with years of collective expertise and helps plan the entertainment, making the event incredible.

TELL US A PIECE OF GREAT ADVICE.

I have been practicing the “letting go” mentality recently. There are things you can control and things that you can't, and that’s OK. In business, just “let it go” and move on.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND PLAY?

I love to work! But when I get a free day, I enjoy playing music (piano and guitar), exercising, surfing in the beautiful ocean, bike riding, and seeing friends and family. I am hypersocial, and I love being around people.

WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS?

My parents, Kathy and Steve Campbell. They are loving and supportive and want to hear the details of VOX DJs. They always have great ideas to improve the business.

WILL PASSAVIA

Real Estate Agent, Compass

Will Passavia is a real estate advisor specializing in selling, buying and leasing residential real estate in the South Bay and Greater Los Angeles. Will earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, where he played Division I lacrosse for four years. He spent a decade working in residential real estate development in the Hamptons and L.A. before switching to sales 11 years ago. He and his family of four live in Manhattan Beach.

WHAT LED TO YOUR CHOICE OF THIS CAREER FIELD?

My passion for connecting with people. After over a decade in real estate development around the country, it was clear that my true fulfillment came from the interactions and relationships I built when selling our properties.

HOW DO YOU FOSTER A POSITIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT WITH CLIENTS?

I care for the people I work with almost to a fault. The experience of buying or selling a home is a team effort— everyone needs to be a part of it. This leads to better communication and positive outcomes. And fun! We always have a good laugh and some fun along the way.

HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF IN A CROWDED FIELD?

I believe that always doing the right thing has earned me a reputation as a trusted and loyal resource in my field. I work diligently to help my clients set and meet their expectations. Additionally, I genuinely enjoy my profession and the people I work with. Bringing positivity to what can often be a challenging experience leads to happy clients.

YOU’RE NOT FROM CALIFORNIA. IS THAT A POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE IN YOUR WORK?

Growing up in New York has been a tremendous benefit. There is no way to appreciate California as much as I do if I had grown up here. Learning to interact with people during the harsh winters back East has equipped me with a unique skill set that translates well to high-pressure scenarios, such as buying or selling luxury real estate. If I can work with New Yorkers, I can work with anyone!

FILMMAKER AND RECENT HERMOSA BEACH SURFER WALK OF FAME INDUCTEE GREG BROWNING REFLECTS ON HIS GENERATION’S UNIQUE IMPACT ON SURFING CULTURE.

For Greg Browning, also known as Geebs, Thursday mornings mean breakfast at Eat At Joe’s in South Redondo Beach. Greg and his crew of approximately a dozen others gather on the patio, taking up an entire row of pushed-together tables so they can chat about life, surfing, filming and mentoring the next generation.

Skateboarding came first for Greg. Surfing didn’t come into the picture until they moved to Hermosa Beach from Torrance. “Mom moved us [with older brother Jeff] to Hermosa, kicking and screaming, when I was 7 years old,” remembers Greg. “I had no idea what that moment would lead to.”

Jeff, 2½ years older, learned how to surf at 8th Street. “I would teach Greg, and then once he figured it out, he would be better at it than me,” he says. Soon Greg and his best friend, Jack Doolittle, were south of the Hermosa pier surf rats along with identical twins Keith Brewer and Derek Brewer.

“One day Matt Walls, who was a few years older, invited the Brewers and me to surf at 16th Street,” Greg says. 16th Street has a storm drain, so the runoff creates a channel that forms left- and right-breaking waves. “It was a game changer,” he recalls.

Around the same time, the boys met Howard Eddy, a retired Magnavox engineer who lived a few houses up on a walk street. One of the boys asked him to shoot video of them surfing, and the rest is history.

Howard filmed hundreds of hours of footage of the boys surfing. Surf in the morning, go to school and watch the footage after school. Greg believes watching those tapes helped him become a better surfer. Plus, Howard taught him how to fix broken cameras—a skill that would come in handy later in life.

Greg excelled quickly, and by age 13 he started competing at National Scholastic Surfing Association contests. After his father gifted him an 8 mm RCA

camcorder, he also began making films.

Greg became well known for his silky-smooth surf style. As a “free surfer,” he chose not to pursue contests.

“He is a powerfully explosive small-wave surfer but also has the ridiculous courage it takes to drop in on the biggest sets at the Redondo Breakwall,” notes musician Jim Lindberg. “He does all of this while being one of the gentlest, most laid-back and funniest guys you’ll ever meet. And he brought all that to his filmmaking as well.”

A cultural legend, Greg is part of a small group of American surfers coined the Momentum Generation, credited with surfing’s break into the mainstream. This group includes Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Shane Dorian, Benji Weatherley, Taylor Knox, Kalani Robb and Donavon Frankenreiter. Some dominated the contest scene, namely Slater, an 11-time World Champion. Others realized the endless opportunities in filming free surfing for content.

In 1993 Greg filmed parts in three of Taylor Steele’s popular movies, including Momentum II. Also, with the help of local photographer Mike Balzer, he landed magazine covers.

Realizing the best memories of surf trips were the interpersonal relationships and shenanigans that go on behind the scenes, he set out to make a reality version of a surf trip. After reaching out to his friends, including Rob, Donavon, Benji and Kalani, he rented a motorhome and the Drive Thru surf videos were born.

Greg filmed, directed and edited the first couple of films. Realizing it was too much work, he stopped surfing in subsequent films and eventually hired an editor. Greg not only captured amazing water footage but also B-roll on old 8 mm and 16 mm film cameras. The crew filmed videos in California, Australia, Japan, the Caribbean, South Africa, New Zealand, Europe and South Central America.

“I pretended I knew everything just to get the chance to go on another surf trip with my best friends and some of my surfing heroes,” Greg shares. “Howard allowed me to turn my passion for surfing into a profession, which really meant I would never have to work a day in my life.”

After 10 successful films that spanned the globe, the landscape changed when Fox purchased the rights and insisted on making changes the guys were not comfortable with. Additionally, the cost of music increased dramatically with Fox’s involvement. Around this time, Body Glove surfer Tatiana Weston-Webb needed a coach. Greg was ready for the challenge, and they traveled the world together for the next three years.

Life took a drastic turn for Greg in early 2023 when he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a nervous system disease that breaks down nerve cells and weakens muscles. There is no cure for ALS, but medications and therapy can slow down the symptoms. For Greg, positivity means trying to live the “best worst day” of his life daily.

Greg met childhood friend Dustin Maenpa in first grade. Eventually their bond continued through a love for surfing and then filming. Dustin, a film editor, worked on the Drive Thru Australia series. Around the same time Greg was diagnosed, Dustin learned he had pancreatic cancer.

“It’s insanity. It’s surreal,” explains Dustin. “There is this daily thing where you almost want to ‘wake up’ because you feel like a wicked joke has been played on you.” Greg nods his head in agreement. Now the two have a bond they never thought imaginable as they both fight for their lives at just barely 50 years old.

Greg has two sons: Parker, 24, and Drew, 21. He realized Carrie, his girlfriend of 10 years, was “the one” when she didn’t run after seeing his Star Wars room. They married in December 2023 and between the two of them have four children.

In April, Greg, alongside Mike Balzer and David Nuuhiwa, was inducted into the Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame. “We all know what a legend he is,” says friend Kelly Slater on Greg’s induction. “All his friends love him, but now you all know a bit more about him.”

While the ocean can be chaotic, surfers crave the feeling of peace they get in the water. Today Greg may not have the same relationship with the water that he had in the past, but he feels a similar peace and calmness at his weekly breakfasts.

Waves come and go. If you’re lucky, friendships last a lifetime. ■

Summit Seeker

HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR CAIMIN MCDUFFIE IS ALREADY HALFWAY TO CLIMBING THE HIGHEST PEAK IN EACH OF THE 50 STATES.

It was the perfect June day. The sun was shining in the clear sky as Caimin McDuffie, accompanied by his dad and his friend, set out on the path to the summit of Boundary Peak—the tallest mountain in Nevada. Little did he know that his life would never be the same.

Caimin is a junior at Palos Verdes High School, though his resume is miles long. He’s a varsity lacrosse player, accomplished Eagle Scout, co-captain of the robotics team, Young Entrepreneurs Academy member and lifeguard at the Palos Verdes Beach Club. And he has a goal to climb the tallest mountains in all 50 states.

During his freshman year, Caimin’s Boy Scout troop decided to take the eight-day, 70+-mile hike across Mount Whitney in California, the tallest mountain in the continental United States.

“If I can do this, I can do all of the tallest peaks in the United States,” he remembers. He’s nearly halfway to his goal, having climbed 24 mountains in three years.

On the wall in Caimin’s room, a map of the United States freckles with pushpins of all 50 hikes—black for the ones he’s completed, white for ones he’s yet to do—with string between each planning out possible routes. “It looks like a crime investigation,” he jokes.

His most memorable climb was Nevada’s Boundary Peak. What started as a pleasant hike took a dark turn. The clear skies dissipated, the winds kicked up and sleet came down around him. Suddenly, Caimin couldn’t see 2 feet in front of him.

The chill from the 60 mph winds caused the temperature to drop so much, his hands started to bleed. In spite of this, Caimin was determined to make it to the top—only 0.3 miles away from his goal. So he continued army-crawling on his hands and knees to the summit.

Caimin’s dad had also decided to attempt the

treacherous climb. Very soon, Caimin lost sight of him, and true panic began to set in. To stay calm, Caimin repeated his mantra: “You can do so much more than you give yourself credit for.” After what felt like an eternity, his dad stumbled out from the sleet, and they descended the mountain.

Rather than be discouraged by this life-threatening event, it became the impetus for his new mission: Climb Your Peak (climbyourpeak.org), a website dedicated to chronicling his hikes and encouraging young kids to accomplish great things. “I’m climbing all these mountains and learning so much,” he thought. “Why don’t I make this something bigger?”

He shares not only his own story but the stories of those he encounters on his mountain climbing journey. He asks each person to share what they tell themselves to get them to the top. When Caimin was in third grade, he dealt with anxiety but was able to overcome it with the help of great teachers.

Having gone through this adversity at a young age, Caimin’s mission is to share what he’s learned with kids. To do this, he wrote Walter’s Worry Weed, a children’s book that chronicles the life of third grader Walter, a kid with big dreams and a pesky plant holding him back. The book ends with Walter repeating Walter’s Wise Words to himself: “Speak kindly to yourself. Quiet the unkind words of others. Ask an adult to help untangle negative thoughts. Remember, you have the power to plant positive seeds.” In the days after the book’s release, it reached #1 on Amazon’s Education Counseling list.

It’s safe to say that Caimin’s future is extremely bright, and the positivity he puts out into the world will carry him far. Keep climbing, Caimin. ■

Candy Lugo was treated successfully for a near-fatal blood clot in her lungs and is now back to her kickboxing routine.

BREATHLESS & SCARED

Candy Lugo is alive today thanks to a new minimally invasive procedure that allows Providence Little Company of Mary’s doctors to remove blood clots in the lungs quickly.

Candy Lugo remembers looking down at her hands and seeing that her fingernails had turned stark white—there was no color in the nail beds at all. Moments earlier, the 40-year-old payroll manager had been getting ready to leave her home in Redondo Beach to join her family for a Memorial Day BBQ, but she suddenly found herself having trouble breathing. She sat down on the bed, glanced at her hands and knew she needed an ambulance.

She remembers, “I knew it wasn’t normal. I kept repeating to the paramedics: ‘I can’t breathe.’”

Candy says she recalls passing a cemetery as the ambulance made its way to the Providence Little Company of Mary emergency department. “That was the last thing I saw. Then I was asleep, and I kept telling myself I needed to wake up. I was really scared.”

On arrival at the emergency department, Candy was met by Leonardo Rodriguez, MD, the attending emergency medicine physician. Struggling hard to breathe, Candy went into cardiac arrest and Dr. Rodriguez called a code blue, summoning Providence Little Company of Mary’s rapid response team to resuscitate her. With heroic action, emergency medicine doctor Michael Perez, MD, brought Candy back to life.

Suspecting a pulmonary embolism

(PE)—that is, a clot cutting off blood circulation in the lungs—Dr. Rodriguez then called a code PE, which triggered another set of emergency procedures designed by interventional cardiologist Rishi Kaushal, MD, who was on duty that evening. Dr. Kaushal and Dr. Rodriguez had been instrumental in the creation and implementation of the lifesaving code PE rules a few years earlier.

IMMEDIATE ACTION

The first step in responding to a patient with a code PE is to get a CT scan. Candy’s imaging showed that although she had none of the typical risk factors, there was indeed a large blood clot blocking the circulation of blood in both lungs. Although not every blood clot is life-threatening, this one was and it needed urgent treatment. “This clot was absolutely not survivable,” says Dr. Kaushal.

In the past, the options for treating severe blood clots were limited to blood thinners, which would not have been effective in time to save Candy. More recently, clot-busting drugs known as thrombolytics have come into widespread use, but they carry their own risks and require a stay in the ICU. Fortunately for Candy, Dr. Kaushal had a third option: a catheter device made by Inari Medical known as the FlowTriever that was first put into service at Providence Little Company of Mary in 2021.

At the time, the hospital was the only one

“THIS BLOOD CLOT WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT SURVIVABLE WITHOUT TREATMENT.”

in the South Bay that had the clot-retrieving catheter available. In this case, it saved Candy’s life. “She came in, in dire straits,” recalls Dr. Kaushal. “She was in shock.”

In a minimally invasive procedure, Dr. Kaushal threaded a guide wire into Candy’s veins after making an opening in a large vein in her groin. Dr. Kaushal then followed the wire’s pathway with the catheter, reaching the clot and suctioning it into the catheter, removing the blockage.

NOT OVER YET

Candy awoke the next day to find a ventilator breathing for her. Once the ventilator was removed and she was breathing on her own, she realized that one side of her face was numb. New imaging showed that she had a second clot in a major vein in her kidney. Further complicating the situation was a common congenital heart condition. Candy had a hole in her heart between the left

and right atria. The hole had allowed some of the clot to slip through and lodge in her brain, causing a stroke that caused the facial numbness.

In a second procedure, Dr. Kaushal used the FlowTriever again to capture and remove the clot in the kidney and, using a different kind of catheter, placed a tiny plug—a septal occluder—to close the hole in Candy’s heart.

Today, two years later, Candy is back at work full time and has returned to kickboxing. She still takes anticoagulant medication to reduce

the risk of another clot.

Of her first-ever hospital stay, she says, “They were super nice; it felt like home.”

What you need to know about VTEs

Venous thromboembolisms (VTEs), blood clots that form in veins and then block blood flow, are surprisingly common. About 900,000 people develop VTEs each year, and of those, 60,000 to 100,000 die as a result, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

The primary symptom of a VTE that has traveled to the lungs to become a life-threatening pulmonary embolism is difficulty breathing. That’s similar to the symptoms of other cardiac and respiratory crises like a heart attack or severe pneumonia. So if you experience unexplained shortness of breath, call 911.

A particular type of VTE known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs mostly in the legs. DVT symptoms include swelling, redness and warm skin in the affected area. Because the clot can dislodge and cause a pulmonary embolism, this form of VTE needs urgent medical care as well.

Common risk factors for VTE include:

• Age—risk begins rising at age 40 Smoking

• Obesity

• Being pregnant

• Surgery, especially when immobilized during recovery

• Major injuries, including broken bones

• High blood pressure

• Cancer

Sitting or not moving for long periods of time

AN ECLECTIC GROUP OF AEROSPACE PROFESSIONALS AND CAREER MUSICIANS TAKES THE STAGE ON HERMOSA BEACH’S 29TH STREET.

Photographed by Shane O’Donnell

On a narrow residential side street off Hermosa Avenue, a crowd is forming around a three-story beach home. Between two sets of stairs splitting off into private residences is a landing, occupied by a phalanx of guitar stands, mics, speakers and a drum set. A keyboard and conga drums are squeezed onto the adjacent patio.

This setup is exactly what you might expect from a bohemian area known to host the BeachLife concert series. What might not be so apparent at first glance is that the band has only been playing for three years. Less than half of its members are musicians by trade, and intriguingly, the other half are aerospace professionals.

Rewind to the winter of 2019. Every restaurant worth its salt in Hermosa Beach was hosting live music. Among them was Enrique’s Restaurant & Cantina, where Garland Campbell, a marketing communications manager at defense contractor Northrop Grumman, had been singing and playing saxophone with professional pianist Dave Goldstein and percussionist Nova James. Within the first few weeks, David Zabalaoui and Jeff Grant stopped in to support their colleague and were invited to sing a song or two with Garland’s band.

“I wouldn’t do it [at first],” says Jeff. “David and I had played music together, but it was only for fun. Playing in front of people at this bar … oh God, [suddenly] we have to be good.”

David was no stranger to the fine arts. He fondly reminisces about road trips he took in the ’60s when his mother—a member of an all-girl rock ’n’ roll band in her high school years—taught him how to carry harmonies. Since then, music has suffused practically every corner of his life, personal and professional.

He developed a reputation for the musical verve he brought to an otherwise conservative aerospace industry beset by government regulations and silos. In 2012

he performed his end-of-year wrap-up before Jeff and other Northrop Grumman executives with an original parody of Train’s “50 Ways to Say Goodbye.” His version, “50 Ways We Helped Your Business Thrive,” earned a standing ovation.

Back at Enrique’s, their gig was short-lived. When California COVID-19 mandates abolished live entertainment in March 2020, not only did the restaurant cut its performance schedule, but the owner also lost the business outright.

This was where the band’s big comeback story began. In June 2020, restless with the COVID-19 constraints, Jeff invited David to sing a few songs for his newly established “Thirsty Thursdays”—an attempt to reinvigorate a neighborhood retreating into itself. The duo invited Garland and Dave, as well as new faces like professional drummer Gary Ferguson (a 29th Street neighbor and close friend), guitarist Darren Halford (an Enrique’s frequenter and former U-2 pilot) and mediabuyer-turned-conga-player Larry Poindexter.

For their first performance, they congregated on Larry’s porch without a PA system and played from a set list of five songs to a crowd composed of their spouses. They dubbed themselves The 29th Street Band.

By summer, their fanbase would swell to as many as 70 in one night, filling 29th Street every Thursday with folding tables and chairs. The band released original songs like “Looking Back,” a tribute to NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, which some of them helped create. People took notice, including Dean Francois, a Hermosa Beach city council hopeful (now mayor pro tem) who borrowed the stage during his 2021 campaign.

Before long, this jaw-dropping turnout attracted visits from local law enforcement. The band curtailed their shows with an 8 p.m. cutoff. When that didn’t work, Jeff—ever the engineer—invested in a decibel meter to prove to officers their volume was within legal limits.

In addition to music, the band regularly performs acts of kindness. Gary remembers well the fifth grade boy who would sit on the sidewalk with his mother. Every week he brought a pair of makeshift drumsticks and played along with the band, making the curb his

instrument. Sensing the boy’s enthusiasm, Gary dug around in his studio, unearthed an old drum set and gifted it.

This is the legacy 29th Street leaves in its wake, something Zabalaoui likens to a “source of light.”

Setting out to produce good music, the band unexpectedly created a neighborhood fixture where none are turned away.

“The bottom line,” says Jeff, “is Hermosa Beach— like most parts of the South Bay—is full of people who have been here for many, many years. They enjoy each other’s company, and they enjoy getting together and meeting new people. That’s what happens [here].”

On the night of December 8, the band was prepping for their holiday special. The air was a brisk 60 degrees, and the gathered audience was all sweaters and smiles.

Gary laid down a groove on his Ludwig drum set, while Garland descended an illuminated railing of stairs with saxophone in hand. Jeff sipped a cup of Hitching Post merlot, his Epiphone Casino slung over his shoulder as he sidled around greeting guests. David adjusted his mic stand and moved into the band’s signature rendition of Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places.”

“Yeah, Thursday night’s the best night of the week, when I slip on down to Hermosa Beach / Yeah, I got friends on 29th Street.” ■

Basketball Clinic at Manhattan Beach Middle School

Mira Costa’s Jack Mondello partnered with Friendship Foundation to organize and host a basketball clinic at Manhattan Beach Middle School. This inspiring event helped further the mission of the Friendship Foundation, a nonprofit that supports parents and families who have children and young adults with special needs. With the help of the Mira Costa basketball team and peer volunteers it was an uplifting, incredible event.

A PERSONAL TOUCH

Guzman Law Group’s Drew Hallett and Marcus Chang are impacting the community.

Alongtime advocate in the South Bay community, Guzman Law Group proves again and again that a boutique firm can deliver big law results with a personal touch. For more than three decades, Guzman Law Group, led by founder and attorney Denise M. Guzman, has provided high-caliber legal services in business and finance transactions, trust and civil litigation, estate planning and trust administration. The firm assists clients whenever a legal issue arises—whether it be creating a new business entity, negotiating a merger or acquisition, planning for a company to be passed down to the next generation, or advising clients on business or trust disputes.

“Guzman Law Group can provide clients with a variety of top-notch legal services under one roof,” shares attorney Drew Hallett. “This is critical for clients because a client’s legal issues do not arise in a vacuum. An issue that arises in one area of law will likely impact or affect a legal issue in another. The firm’s collaborative culture allows attorneys from different departments to work as a team to develop a comprehensive strategy rather than working as separate entities.”

Drew oversees the firm’s litigation department, handling both civil and trust litigation matters. He helps individuals and companies facing general and complex business issues, as well as individuals dealing with family conflict concerning the division of assets of a trust or estate.

“I always make the effort to get to know our clients on a personal level,” he says.

“WE BUILD INCREDIBLE RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR CLIENTS BECAUSE WE CARE.”

“We know how much these matters mean to our clients, and we act accordingly. We also know that these matters may cause stress or anxiety or may be scary if it is the first time that a client is dealing with an issue like this. That is why we make sure they know that we care about them and truly want the best for them.”

“Drew is noted for being a good negotiator,” says Denise. “He knows how to litigate hard when necessary and when to negotiate a settlement. He sees the big picture.”

Attorney Marcus Chang focuses on business and estate planning, administering accounts from $1 million to over $75 million. “By working with such a diverse group of clients in both the planning and the administration sides, I am able to identify and navigate around issues that normally would not be apparent,” he explains.

Like Drew, Marcus recognizes that their specific aspect of law can be very emotional for clients, so he takes great pride in getting to know them individually and making them more comfortable during the process. “A good lawyer listens to their clients and is able to provide advice to the clients accordingly, versus simply telling them what they need to do.”

“Marcus is noted for having a personal touch on estate planning matters and

handling complex trust administrations,” says Denise. “He has a sincere and true concern for the future care of his clients. Trusts are not just being used as a tool upon death. We are seeing it triggered more and more during the client’s lifetime to help guide their children in the client’s final years.”

Outside the office, both Drew and Marcus enjoy active lives, raising children and giving back to their community. As the Faces of Law for Guzman Law Group, they bring a familial connection to their work— assuring their clients not only receive the results they desire but acting as a skilled partner who hears and absorbs all the details with trust and confidentiality.

Adds Marcus, “We establish a connection with our clients from our initial meeting and take the time to learn about who they are. We are able to better serve our clients because we really know them.”

SIGNATURE ESTATE & INVESTMENT ADVISORS, LLC

Signature Estate & Investment Advisors, LLC® (SEIA) is an independent Registered Investment Advisory firm offering wealth management and financial planning services to affluent individuals, families and business owners. With a combined 50 years of wealth management experience and holding multiple advanced degrees and financial designations, managing senior partner Vince DiLeva, MS, CFP, AIF, senior partner Eric Pritz, CFP, and financial advisor Len Hirsh, MBA, CFP, AIF, are proud residents and supporters of the South Bay community. They work in a fiduciary capacity, delivering comprehensive investment advice and employing a team approach with an open-door policy so clients can always reach someone at the firm to address any questions. HOW IS SEIA DIFFERENT?

We understand that priorities shift, goals evolve and unexpected needs arise, and we know that cookie-cutter investment solutions rarely get the job done. We incorporate a range of strategies and maintain flexibility to tactically address new market challenges and opportunities as they arise. SEIA offers customizable and personally crafted portfolios that incorporate our investment committee’s extensive research and market analysis. We even offer a unique “nondiscretionary” approach where clients retain final decision-making authority on investment strategies, specific holdings and trade timing. It’s a great stepping-stone solution for those accustomed to managing their own portfolio and who are thereby hesitant to “turn over the reins.”

WHAT’S NEW AT SEIA?

We are excited to announce that we have a new addition to our team: April Rosenberry, JD, LLM, who joins us as the director of estate, tax and financial planning. April will be leading her team in providing advice on lifetime, trust and estate transfers, focusing on tax-efficient strategies. With the current estate tax laws changing in the near future, April will be able to help our clients navigate estate planning strategies for their families.

ARE WE HEADED INTO A RECESSION?

This time last year, many in our profession were predicting a recession in 2023. However, it never materialized, possibly due to a continuing strong jobs market or the Fed’s rate policies seeming to help cool inflation. Rather than plan for a recession that may or may not come in the next year or beyond, create an investment plan for the economy we are living in right now. That is, a lowgrowth economy that is grinding along with inflation at 3% to 4%, unemployment at 4%, GDP growing at 1% to 2% and the cost to borrow money at 6% to 8%. And recession talk aside, it is most likely an economic environment we are going to be in for a while. In our view, the biggest opportunity is in the bond market. There are very attractive yields in high-quality corporate bonds or California municipal bonds. Consider buying bonds to lock in yields over the next six to eight years. If the economy does fall into recession, the Fed will likely lower interest rates, benefiting those bonds. Additionally, in a low-growth environment, build cash flow into your portfolio, which is easier to do in today’s market. Implementing an investment strategy that allows you to take advantage of current market opportunities will not only help protect your investments in the event of a recession but will also put you in a position to have a well-diversified portfolio.

STUMPO WEALTH MANAGEMENT GROUP

Gino Stumpo is a financial advisor and portfolio manager at UBS Financial Services, Inc. He has nearly 25 years of experience, and his career has focused on serving the needs of successful high net worth individuals and families. The Stumpo Wealth Management team places the focus squarely on clients, with tailored strategies crafted to enhance their financial well-being.

DO YOU PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES OR WORKSHOPS TO EMPOWER YOUR CLIENTS?

I periodically host in-person workshops to educate individuals on important topics, such as retirement planning, estate planning strategies, etc. I also use resources such as white papers, infographics and research to educate clients on complex concepts. Whether sharing this information through social media, one-onone meetings or in-person events, I strive to educate and nurture financial understanding.

SHARE YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OF WISDOM USING A QUOTE.

“If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin This quote resonates with me because it aligns with the importance of constructing a financial plan. The importance of creating a well-thought-out financial road map cannot be overstated, as it’s key to achieving economic success. Financial planning is a lot like preparing for a road trip—you wouldn’t just jump in your car and start driving without a plan. Both situations require preparation, careful planning and clear communication to ensure you reach your destination.

WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT AS A LEADER IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

In a world increasingly dominated by digital interactions, I believe in the power of in-person meetings. I recognize the value of human connection in discussing a client’s financial aspirations and concerns. My approach is not just about numbers; it’s about understanding your life, dreams and aspirations, forming the bedrock of a financial plan that aligns with your family’s financial needs.

WHAT'S YOUR ADVICE FOR YOUNGER CLIENTS?

The best piece of advice I can give is to start early. Step one is understanding your finances and educating yourself. Then you can focus on how you can allocate a portion of your income for investing. It’s important to have a long-term perspective of your finances to recognize where you want to be in the future.

HAVING WORKED WITH UBS FOR NEARLY 25 YEARS, WHAT MAKES YOU SO LOYAL?

My clients’ needs are always my top priority. UBS has been providing products and services for individuals for over 160 years and has been entrusted with over $5 trillion in client assets. This is very telling.

HOW DID YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS INDUSTRY?

I developed a passion for the finance industry during my college years as a finance major. I always had a natural interest in investments, but joining the finance club transformed that interest into a passion. It was there that a guest lecture by a financial advisor showcased the range of opportunities in the field. Soon after, I secured an internship at Saloman Smith Barney, a move that launched my career. After graduating I joined PaineWebber, which was later acquired by UBS. Throughout this journey my fascination with the industry has only grown, and I find new reasons to love what I do every day.

TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT YOURSELF THAT OTHERS MAY NOT KNOW.

With a busy work schedule, I make sure to take time for myself and participate in activities I enjoy. Over the past year, I’ve taken part in Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournaments and have taught my sons the art of the sport. I’ve also enjoyed volunteering with special needs children through my church because engaging in charitable and community-oriented events holds a special place in my heart.

FAMILY FINANCIAL

Tammy Trenta-Knowlton, founder and CEO of Family Financial in Manhattan Beach, has worked as a financial advocate for clients for more than 27 years. She provides full wealth management services, integrating financial, tax and legal perspectives to provide holistic advice tailored to successful business owners and affluent families. She primarily practices as a Certified Financial Planner but is also a Certified Tax Planner and a Certified Exit Planner.

Tammy lives in Manhattan Beach with her husband, Ryan, and her son, Jack. She serves as the treasurer and an active board member of the Parent Teacher Association at her son’s school, American Martyrs.

SHARE A SUCCESS STORY WHERE YOUR GUIDANCE SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED A CLIENT’S WELL-BEING.

A particularly impactful success story from our practice involves a client who lost her husband last year. New to the financial responsibility in the midst of her grieving, we met with her monthly to provide structured support and guidance. We helped set up an automated bill-pay system to streamline her financial obligations and assist in filing a claim for long-term care benefits, significantly alleviating her financial stress. We double-checked that their financial affairs were in order and advised her on the transition of assets when her husband passed. Our hands-on assistance during this personally challenging time ensured she could focus on her emotional recovery without the added burden of complex financial concerns.

TELL US ABOUT A UNIQUE APPROACH YOU TOOK TO SOLVING A CLIENT’S PROBLEM.

I’m dedicated to enhancing my clients’ financial well-being beyond advice on marketable securities but in more innovative ways. For one client, I thoroughly analyzed his real estate holdings—an area often overlooked by traditional financial advisors—in order to boost his cash flow. By restructuring his loans, fine-tuning his tax strategies and advising on strategic real estate moves like 1031 exchanges, I helped him save $250,000 annually, increase his aftertax income and accelerate his wealth growth by 1,000% over six years. This approach not only deepened our relationship but demonstrates the impact of creative, customized financial strategies.

HOW DO PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIPS ELEVATE WHAT YOU OFFER?

As a family office advisor, we collaborate internally with financial, tax and legal professionals to optimize the management of wealth. This holistic model allows us to identify missed opportunities and prevent mistakes or oversights. Our team approach helps

us handle complex situations comprehensively, with the goal of minimizing taxes and maximizing wealth.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT YOUR PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS ALIGN WITH ETHICAL STANDARDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY?

Acting as a fiduciary is a non-negotiable for us in wealth management. As such, we are legally required to act in the best interests of our clients, which builds trust and ensures ethical conduct. Fiduciaries adhere to a higher standard of care when compared to the broker model of advice. Being a fiduciary not only fosters deeper client relationships but also supports long-term success in a competitive market.

DO YOU PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES TO EMPOWER CLIENTS?

I place a high value on financial literacy and actively work to educate and empower not only my clients but also their family members. Recognizing the importance of passing on knowledge and skills, I offer an educational course specifically tailored to financially focused individuals who are just getting started. Additionally, I’ve recently authored a book that serves as a comprehensive guide for high achievers of any age. It outlines the essential skills needed in an advisor and explains how a family office can dramatically accelerate wealth accumulation. This initiative underscores my commitment to ensuring clients and their families are well-equipped to make informed decisions, fostering financial savvy across generations.

HOW DO YOU ASSIST CLIENTS IN PLANNING FOR THEIR LEGACY AND ESTATE?

It’s vital to start by understanding their values, goals and family dynamics. By incorporating these factors, along with tax planning strategies and considerations for business succession and charitable giving, we can craft a comprehensive estate plan that aligns with their wishes and maximizes the preservation of wealth for future generations. Engaging in discussions while everyone is healthy and involving family members where appropriate help ensure clarity and avoid surprises down the road.

NAVIGOE WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Navigoe is a South Bay fee-only financial fiduciary that works with families, business owners and executives concerned with maintaining and growing their financial prosperity. Owner and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

professional Scott Leonard has more than 30 years of experience in financial planning and wealth management. For the past four years, Navigoe has been selected as one of the Best Financial Advisors & Wealth Management Firms in Los Angeles by AdvisoryHQ.

IS THERE AN OVERRIDING CONCEPT THAT BEST DESCRIBES NAVIGOE’S SERVICES?

We call it Family Wealth Preservation. Our clients have worked hard, made sacrifices and saved to achieve or get on the path toward financial independence. They are looking to generate a steady income stream in retirement for themselves while still preserving their financial legacy for subsequent generations.

HOW DO YOU APPROACH THE DIFFICULT TASK OF WEALTH PRESERVATION?

Our entire service model is set up to design, implement and oversee a custom financial strategy that integrates all the aspects of family wealth preservation: investment management, tax mitigation, estate planning, retirement income, wealth transfer, charitable giving and asset protection.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT NAVIGOE’S FAMILY WEALTH PRESERVATION VERSUS OTHER TRADITIONAL WEALTH MANAGEMENT SERVICES?

The focus on both preservation and income. There are many different factors that can impact a family’s financial health. Most firms primarily focus on investments. However, other elements such as taxes, expenses and complexity are much greater forces affecting the long-term value of capital and its ability to generate spendable income. We use a holistic approach to the preservation of capital—always seeking to determine if it can be accomplished for less money, less complexity, less risk and lower taxes.

WHAT DOES THE NAME NAVIGOE MEAN?

“Navigo” is Latin for “navigate” or “to sail.” The translation may specifically be “to navigate a sailboat across oceans.” At Navigoe we believe that we serve as our clients’ financial navigators, helping them achieve their goals and doing so in a secure and enjoyable manner.

YOU PERSONALLY KNOW SOMETHING ABOUT NAVIGATING OCEANS.

Yes, in 2011 my family and I departed on a 2½-year sailing trip through the Caribbean Sea and the South Pacific. I worked remotely on the boat with periodic trips back to the South Bay

for meetings. In the middle of the worst recession since the Great Depression, I literally sailed off into the sunset ... and we did not lose a single client as a result of the trip. I attribute that to the incredible staff of Navigoe, our commitment to service, and the peace of mind we provided to our clients during the Great Recession and market crash.

WHAT TYPES OF CLIENTS ARE BEST SUITED FOR NAVIGOE’S WEALTH PRESERVATION SERVICE?

Family Wealth Preservation is best suited for families that have already accumulated a seven-figure net worth. However, it is extremely beneficial for those who are still in the accumulation—or saving—phase of their lives. Since taxes are one of the biggest expenses for most people, doing proper multiyear tax planning early is critical to minimize the effects of taxation later in life. Planning earlier for financial independence and family wealth preservation leads to a higher probability of achieving these goals.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO HELP YOUR CLIENTS THROUGH UNCERTAINTY?

A unique feature of our investment approach is that it does not require us—or anyone else—to forecast what is going to happen. I know that we cannot predict the future, but we can plan for it. This allows our clients to have peace of mind that the strategies put in place for them to fulfill their goals are not disrupted by these difficult and tragic times.

I liken this approach to planning for an earthquake. In this analogy, most wealth management firms spend their effort trying to predict when and where the next earthquake may strike. At Navigoe, we focus on being ready for “the big one.” If it never occurs in our lifetime, excellent. If it does happen, we are prepared to minimize the after-effects and move on with our lives as smoothly as possible.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS TO BEGIN WORKING WITH NAVIGOE?

At Navigoe, we are seeking lifelong relationships with our clients— to be a partner in helping them achieve all that matters to them in their financial lives. To play off the theme of being our clients’ financial navigator, we do not just hand our clients a chart and push them off the dock. Rather, we board their boat and assist in navigating through their financial lives.

For families looking for an ongoing relationship with an experienced financial services firm, the first step would be to contact us and schedule an introductory meeting. The purpose is for you to learn more about Navigoe and our bespoke approach to wealth management and for us to learn about your unique financial situation and to explore whether working together would be beneficial.

CHARLES SCHWAB

Since its founding in 1971, Charles Schwab has given clients the tools, resources and investment advice needed to secure their financial futures. The firm’s goal is to be a trusted leader in investment services—by supporting clients and also investing in the success of employees and the communities where it operates.

WHAT INDUSTRY RECOGNITION MAKES YOU PROUD?

We take pride that we continue to earn high praise from third parties for our heritage of innovation, modern wealth management capabilities and customer service. Some of these awards include: The J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Full-Service Brokerage Firms – Highest in Investor Satisfaction, #1 Online Broker Overall 2023 by Investor’s Business Daily, and the 2023–2024 Best Investing Platform Overall by U.S. News & World Report. We know we’re doing right by our clients, but it is satisfying to see other organizations recognize it too!

HOW DO YOU ENSURE YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS ALIGN WITH INDUSTRY ETHICAL STANDARDS?

Doing right by our clients is a major part of our brand. Our North Star of looking at each client issue “through client-eyes” ensures we are acting in their best interest—always. Further, we take regulatory compliance, asset safety and cybersecurity very seriously, dedicating substantial resources to them. Because we manage the business so conservatively, we are proud to have not needed TARP funds during the 2007–2008 global financial crisis.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO UNDERSTAND THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF EACH CLIENT?

Like a doctor prescribing medicine, we would never think of making financial recommendations without first going through a discovery process with the clients we serve. Schwab clients in the South Bay with more than $1 million in assets are provided with a dedicated local Schwab financial consultant who takes each client through a process of core wealth management topics, beginning with investment planning but including much more. We are the generalists, but if a subject matter expert is needed, we bring them into the conversation as well. We make sure we truly understand the relevant issues before we recommend any action.

DO YOU PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES TO

EMPOWER CLIENTS?

We provide our point of view on wealth management topics in both periodic private meetings with our clients, client education events here in the South Bay, as well as online webinars for both

those seeking professional oversight of their assets as well as for the do-it-yourselfers who will always have a home at Schwab.

HOW DO YOU ASSIST CLIENTS IN PLANNING FOR THEIR LEGACY AND ESTATE?

To be sure, it is important to understand the facts and figures of a client’s estate situation. But just as important, we need to understand family dynamics and the clients’ intentions for the assets when they die. We are continually amazed at how frequently we see self-directed investors not have assets titled properly nor have beneficiaries listed on record as they intend. We can help with simple things like these, but we can explore more complex issues as well—like planning for potential incapacity and the importance of selecting a competent executor and trustee to fit their situation. Proper legacy and estate planning is at least as important as security selection in a portfolio. In fact, it gets more important as investors get deeper into their retirement years.

GIVE US YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS.

Charitable gift planning is important for just about everyone. We all delight in helping our community organizations with gifting our time, talents and assets, but we should never forget that charitable planning can also be a great tool to minimize capital gain taxes on appreciated assets and reduce the size of an estate prior to death. We can help with various charitable planning approaches.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR WORK MAKE OUR COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE?

Helping clients gain confidence, understand their financial situation and map out their financial picture for the rest of their lives provides great satisfaction for us. When our guidance or professional oversight can help a client reduce anxiety or have more freedom to spend time on hobbies, travel and family, we see smiles on faces. Those smiles are the fuel that gives us energy to keep showing up to work every day. We really do enjoy what we do.

WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL

SUPERPOWER?

The topic of personal finances can often come with stress, guilt and regret. Our superpower is in creating a judgment-free space for clients to come as they are and to partner in getting them where they want to be. We don’t waste time on what we think we should have done. Instead, we get to work on laying a foundation of financial education and providing specific recommendations to show them where we go from here. Each person’s planning journey is unique, and women are so successful in this career because of their natural ability to ask the questions that get to the heart of a client’s goals and to the values that drive them. Understanding the greater “why” is the key to inspiring our clients to take the action necessary to achieve what they want most.

HOW DO YOU HELP CLIENTS AVOID MAKING RASH DECISIONS?

We have a specific focus on educating and empowering our clients around their finances. In the past, we’ve had clients (particularly women) who have complained that their advisor would talk down to them or that they never really understood what they were doing or why. We invest according to the plan, so we feel it is important to help our clients understand the reasons behind why we are making certain recommendations. We don’t need to make someone an expert, but we do feel that placing an emphasis on educating our clients is important. So even if the market is volatile, clients are staying the course and not making reactive changes to the market. We only make changes when the plan changes.

TELL US ABOUT A UNIQUE APPROACH YOU TOOK TO SOLVING A CLIENT’S PROBLEM.

Often we prioritize lifestyle goals over numbers. For example, if our only concern is relaying the exact dollar amount a woman and her family can expect to have when she retires, then we miss out on what is most important to her. Does this mean she gets to travel with her children? How will her day-to-day look different? Women also tend to be more concerned about the important people in their lives. Will her parents and children be taken care of? We try to hit on every facet of this conversation to make sure each client’s plan is reflective of their values and lifestyle.

WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP YOU TAKE TO UNDERSTAND THE UNIQUE NEEDS OF EACH CLIENT?

We never start any business relationship without a foundation of trust, authenticity and genuine connection, which allows for open and honest communication about the true needs of each client. We’re actively seeking natural connections with clients for whom we can truly create value and impact. There’s no room for smoke and mirrors in a business sustained by long-lasting client relationships. People can sense that we have their best interest at heart. When they get that feeling not only does the relationship last, but they want to tell other people about us.

TELL US SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT WOMEN IN YOUR INDUSTRY.

Women are not only more involved in financial services than ever before, but women’s control over our nation’s wealth is about to double from where it currently sits at $14 trillion. According to a 2020 study conducted by McKinsey & Company, “By 2030, American women are expected to control much of the $30 trillion in financial assets that baby boomers will possess—a potential wealth transfer of such magnitude that it approaches the annual GDP of the United States.”

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN YOUR WORK?

Bringing more women into the industry, both as clients and as advisors themselves. Women often perceive that the financial services industry was built by men, for men. In many ways, they are correct. When meeting with a financial advisor, women tend to prepare, study and research in advance of the meeting much more often than their male counterparts. Interestingly, when women meet with female financial advisors, they feel less pressure to do this same level of preparation—allowing for a more comfortable, collaborative experience.

Coastal Calm A ROAD TRIP RESPITE IN BEAUTIFUL BIG SUR MORE ON PAGE 126

Highways & Byways

WE’RE ON THE ROAD AGAIN! EXPLORE FIVE CALIFORNIA DESTINATIONS WORTHY OF YOUR NEXT CAR TRIP.

Beach Resort & Club
Waldorf Astoria Monarch

ORANGE COUNTY OASIS

Nothing beats a coastal drive down the Pacific Coast Highway, especially if your destination is Monarch Beach in Southern Orange County. Nearby Dana Point Harbor was designated the first Whale Heritage Site in North America for its unrivaled migration views.

Waldorf Astoria Monarch Beach Resort & Club beautifully melds casual California beach vibes with the five-star service and amenities you’d expect from this legendary brand. Book an ocean-view room with a fireside terrace and unwind with wine, charcuterie and a dazzling sunset.

The property hosts several dining spots, including popular Bourbon Steak from Chef Michael Mina and the Latin American-infused menu at AVEO Table + Bar. For a true beachside experience, head down to the Monarch Bay Beach Club and enjoy laid-back coastal cuisine steps away from the water.

Daytime pleasures include Monarch Beach Golf, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in the traditional Scottish-links style, pool time at one of the resort’s private cabanas and sea-inspired pampering at the Waldorf Astoria Spa

If you manage to pull yourself away from all the resort bliss, Dana Point Harbor offers its own joys, including shopping, local artisan finds and plenty of casual dining. The Ocean Institute brings the marine world to vivid life with programs designed for the entire family. If you really want to get up close and personal with the creatures of the deep, take advantage of whale watching season from December through April and book a chartered cruise to view grey whales, blue whales, dolphins and other magnificent ocean residents.

SURROUNDING SANTA BARBARA

If you’re looking for an alternative to Santa Barbara

proper, consider venturing up a bit further north to discover coastal splendor without the crowds.

First stop is Goleta and the recently opened hotel The Steward. The property, once owned by horticulturalist Joseph Sexton, hosted one of the area’s first nurseries. The original Sexton House still greets visitors as they arrive, and the hotel honors its botanical past with many of the Sexton family’s trees and plants throughout. Onsite restaurant Terra incorporates locally sourced ingredients showcasing Central Coast farms and producers. A prepacked picnic can be ordered to enjoy on the grounds or via one of their rentable bikes.

Whether by four wheels or two, head northwest of Isla Vista, home to UC Santa Barbara, for a few nature preserves including Snowy Plover Critical Habitat and Dune Swale Pond. Monarch butterflies migrate each October through February at the Ellwood Mesa monarch grove, easily accessible by short trails. For a peaceful beach walk, head up to Santa Barbara Shores Park for sunset.

A bit further up the coast, The Ritz-Carlton Bacara still charms with first-class amenities and tucked-away elegance. Angel Oak brings the steakhouse experience to the sea with a seasonal menu and coastal views. Fans

of Japanese cuisine will enjoy the menu of traditional sushi, sashimi and nigiri at San Setto, all served with Central California flair.

Schedule your tee time at the historic Sandpiper Golf Club and experience panoramic views of the Gaviota Coast. The resort also features a world-class tennis program managed by Cliff Drysdale Tennis, founded by the legendary ESPN analyst and International Tennis Hall of Fame member. And what’s a trip to Bacara without a stop at The Ritz-Carlton Spa Bacara, a treat to all the senses.

WINDING THROUGH WONDERLAND IN BIG SUR

Unmistakably one of the most picturesque destinations in the state, Big Sur—located approximately 150 miles south of San Francisco—lures nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers and seasoned travelers for scenic, rugged ocean views and world-class hotels and resorts. With more than 50 hikes in the area, there are views of coves, Redwood trees, coastal mountains and waterfalls at nearly every turn. (Be sure to check local conditions for up-to-date park information and Highway 1 closures.) Popular options include Andrew Molera State Park, McWay Falls, Garrapata State Park, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Guests can also reserve a guided tour of Point Sur Lightstation on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays. Perched 361 feet above the ocean, the now automated lighthouse, listed on the National Register of Historical Places, was opened in 1889 and has remained in continuous operation since.

For breakfast, don’t miss Big Sur Bakery. Housed in a 1930s ranch-style abode, the bakery serves freshly baked grab-and-go selections, including chocolate croissants, huckleberry scones and blueberry strudel, and offers lunch options as well. Weekend dinner is a must with selections including Mt. Lassen trout with sunchokes, chicory and dashi, and potato dumplings with cauliflower and dill. Next door, pop into Mother Botanical & Shop, a trove filled with gardening books, modern planters, organic seed grow kits, notecards, candles, tote bags and photography.

Originally built in 1949 and once owned by Hollywood luminaries Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth, Nepenthe features a café, restaurant and on-site shop. Perched on a cliffside with jaw-dropping views, the iconic family-run staple serves classics including The Famous Ambrosiaburger, a twist on a ground steak sandwich paired with a French roll and house-made ambrosia sauce.

For the ultimate getaway, book a stay at Alila Ventana Big Sur, featuring 54 rooms set on 160 woodsy acres replete with two swimming pools, Japanese baths, self-guided garden tours, and a spa with an extensive menu of body and facial treatments. Opened in 1992 by the Post family, Post Ranch Inn is known for its organic, wood-clad architecture by prominent architect Mickey Muennig. Poised at 1,200 feet, the remote, woodsy property replete with winding walking paths, heated outdoor infinity jacuzzis, an art gallery and mercantile, and acclaimed restaurant Sierra Mar

ROMANCING THE RUSSIAN RIVER

Situated 5 miles inland from the Sonoma coast, the idyllic region of the Russian River Valley is home to teeny towns framed by majestic redwood trees with family-run coffee shops, notable restaurants and

boutique hotels.

In Guerneville, a former logging town, cruise Main Street for a slew of antique shops, art galleries and eateries. Throwback dime store Guerneville 5 & 10, opened in 1949, is lined with kitschy note cards, yarn and knitting supplies, inflatable inner tubes and an extensive selection of old-fashioned taffy and caramels. At Boon Eat + Drink, choose from menu items conceived by chef and owner Crista Luedtke (she’s appeared on Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games) such as flash-fried brussels sprouts with chili flakes, lemon and garlic oil, and mac and cheese with Mycopia mushrooms and truffle breadcrumbs. Another specialty, the seared duck breast, is beautifully paired with cheesy risotto, trumpet mushrooms, asparagus, apricot marmalade and pomegranate glaze.

Peruse artwork by local artists at The Russian River Art Gallery, a creative co-op with works including watercolor paintings by Penny Knapp and handmade turquoise and silver necklaces by Aaron Poovey. For an afternoon day trip, head 2.5 miles north to the 360acre Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve for a look at Colonel Armstrong, the park’s oldest tree at more than 1,400 years old, and self-guided tours along 9.2 miles of hiking trails. In Duncan Mills, established in 1877 by brothers Samuel and Alexander Duncan, stop by Antiquarian & Florabunda for vintage jewelry, books, stationery and locally grown flowers. Or grab a matcha latte and freshly baked apple galette at Gold Coast Coffee & Bakery

Originally serving as quarters for area miners, Boon Hotel + Spa, also owned by Luedtke, features 14 rooms with Crosley record players, Coyuchi organic linens and reclaimed redwood furnishings, plus a trio of glamping tents, a vintage camper and a saltwater pool. Nearby, The Stavrand Russian River Valley offers 21 guest rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and hot tub, and complimentary gourmet breakfast. The woodsy 6-acre hideaway, headed by general manager Emily Glick and her husband, Sam, includes special guest touches like in-room lanterns for nighttime walks on the property, and bikes and kayaking equipment.

HISTORY MEETS WINE IN AMADOR COUNTY

About 100 miles east of Napa in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Amador County boasts more than 50 wineries with nominal tasting fees and a laid-back, unpretentious vibe. The area—deeply rooted in gold rush history—is often overlooked by tourists but bustling with charming small towns with brick facades, boutiques and tasting rooms pouring varietals such as zinfandel and sangiovese.

Named after prospector José Amador, who mined in the area in the 1800s, Amador City—deemed one of the state’s smallest cities with a total area of just 0.3 square miles—is a prime home base for wine tasting and shopping. Drop your bags at Imperial Hotel & Restaurant, a historic six-room inn with three off-site cottage suites. Initially opened in 1879 and meticulously renovated, the two-story hotel features a restaurant and bar serving dinner Thursday through Sunday and brunch on weekends.

Take a stroll along adjacent Main Street, formerly Historic Highway 29, for specialty shops and home décor troves such as Alley+Main and Dreamy Whites. At the Amador Whitney Museum, delve into the region’s history with artifacts and relics including a replica of a one-room schoolhouse, old school desks, maps, blackand-white photographs and even a covered wagon.

In Jackson, the National Hotel Jackson—anchoring 150-year-old Main Street with antique shops, bookstores and tasting rooms—is teeming with old-world charm. Built in 1852, the revamped Victorian-style hotel features 34 guest rooms, stone fireplaces, a grand piano in the lobby and on-site restaurant. For a glimpse at the town’s beginnings and gold rush days, take a weekend tour at Kennedy Gold Mine, the state’s deepest gold mine at 5,912 feet.

Nearby Plymouth warrants a pit stop at Amador Flower Farm and its 14 acres of demonstration gardens and 1,200 varieties of daylilies. Unpack lunch on one of their picnic tables framed by 300-year-old oak trees. For wine tasting, venture to Shenandoah Vineyards founded in 1977 by husband-and-wife duo Shirley and Leon Sobon—and sip pinot noir, cabernet and barbera. Or spend the day at Helwig Vineyards & Winery for a selection of reds, whites and rosés served alongside grilled paninis and charcuterie boxes (the kitchen is open Thursday through Monday). Other notable wineries include Amador Cellars, Rombauer Vineyards, Sierra Foothills and Story Winery ■

Striking a Chord

A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT COMES FULL CIRCLE FOR A RANCHO PALOS VERDES RESIDENT WHO JAMS WITH STRANGERS IN AIRPORTS AROUND THE WORLD.

Michael Gallion, a self-taught guitarist who regularly plays outside Point Vicente Interpretive Center as well as airport terminals in Denver, Vancouver and Phoenix, has one simple daily practice: “I don’t leave home without a guitar—ever.”

Having grown up in a family of eight children in St. Louis, Missouri, he clearly remembers his aha moment with the guitar. “We struggled a lot financially,” says Michael. “My older brother got a guitar for Christmas, but I wasn’t allowed to touch it. It was like that scene in the movie Step Brothers where Will Ferrell’s character [Brennan Huff] is not allowed to touch the drum set.”

By the time he was 16, Michael had taught himself to play by ear on a guitar he borrowed from his next-door neighbor. He spent months practicing and dissecting each note of one of his all-time favorite songs: “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

“I untangled all of the details, and I wanted to know, ‘What is the guitar player really doing?’” recalls Michael, who played in a cover band in St. Louis named The Code. “Listening to a song and having this sort of catharsis and having it go through your body as the one playing it is just a great experience. I loved the ability to talk about a song and how it became a part of culture and connectivity. But then, to be able to play well enough that people liked what I was doing, it was sort of immediate. I could tell that when I played, people cared.”

After studying photography at the University of

| 139

Missouri-St. Louis and working in the printing industry for many years, Michael moved to Los Angeles in 1988, followed by Orange County, to pursue music. He joined a group called The Color Wheel and opened for bands like No Doubt with front woman Gwen Stefani.

Later, a producer approached Michael’s band to sign with an independent label that wasn’t quite in line with the style of music they wanted to produce. He decided to step away completely to focus on his wife and two children. He also embarked on a new career in business development and sales for Carson–based company Bird Barrier America, Inc., where he educates and consults with businesses to help prevent bird-related issues while protecting bird populations.

But more than a decade later, his musical past caught up with him when his daughter nudged him to play the

guitar again. “She could tell it was a part of my soul that I needed to revisit and that I couldn’t just walk away from,” explains Michael, who now lives in Rancho Palos Verdes. “In 2018, there I was, dropping her off at college in New York. I turned to my wife and said, ‘I have to tell you this secret. I made a promise to her to get back into music, and I don’t know what that means, but I’m just going to buy a guitar and see what happens.”

His version of “winging it” led to carrying his LAVA ME 3 guitar with him and playing local gigs and private events with his band and at airports. He is the founder of Bedrock, an acoustic rock band with lead singer Lindsey Star and drummer Justin Tompkins that performs at local venues including Belle Epoque and The Lighthouse Café.

“When I pick up the guitar now, it’s with a lot of wisdom and experience,” says Michael, who strums a wide range of songs from troupes and artists including Neil Young, The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac. “There’s something so organic about it—it’s not contrived, and it’s not like I force myself on anyone. I sit quietly to the side. I don’t grandstand. I don’t place my guitar case out to try to collect tips. There are many musicians in the world who are so much better than me, so if I’m given cash, I pass it on to other emerging musicians I meet. There’s something special about that money.”

Michael, who took 52 trips last year and logged 170 hotel nights, strongly believes music brings people together—especially flight attendants and airport staff. “The right song performed live in the middle of all the hustle and bustle can make all the difference,” he says. “It’s not the same as overhead music. There is something about particular songs in the moment where people want to share the song’s meaning for them. Each great song seems to have 100 different stories, depending on who you meet.”

It’s these stories and connections that remind him of the vital role of music in his life. “There’s no agenda, and the universe has something in mind for it,” says Michael. “I followed my heart all the way until now, and this has turned out to be a reward for making the right choices.” ■

design touches such as rich navy-hued walls, black-andwhite photos, kitchenettes with microwaves and mini refrigerators, and an outdoor area with firepits. After strolling through downtown, grab a bespoke cocktail at the on-site watering hole Melrose Spirit Co., which features a neon pink sign depicting “This Must Be The Place.”

Where to Wander

Bucolic Belli Fiori Lavender Farm is lined with 1,110 lavender plants of 11 varieties. Their specialty boutique is stocked with homemade lavender-infused hand salve, lavender seasoning salt and scented candles.

Established by California transplants Lisa and Dave Proietti, the family-run property is Colorado’s mini version of Provence. The farm is also home to the family’s Highlands Distillery. Housed inside a yurtturned-bar, the distillery offers libations like the elevated blueberry lemonade on draft with housemade vodka, blueberries, lemonade and muddled mint, or the Mesa Massif with gin, Fever-Tree tonic water, lime juice and a lime garnish. On a sunny day, snag one of the red Adirondack-style chairs and order a charcuterie board, pan pizza or an Italian-style sandwich.

GATEWAY

Vibe: unexpected and off-the-beaten path

Where to Sleep

A result of the vision of former Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks, the 500-acre Gateway Canyons Resort & Spa features Southwestern-inspired rooms. It is surrounded by red rock within the Unaweep Canyon, once home to gold prospectors. Activities here are endless—from an on-site spa and auto museum showcasing more than 50 cars, to mountain biking and fishing.

Where to Wander

For a snapshot back in time to the gold mining days, take a short drive south to Hanging Flume, a defunct, open-water chute built in the 1880s by Montrose Placer Mining Company. Once stretching 13 miles long and suspended 75 feet above the Dolores River Canyon, the engineering marvel affixed to the side of the sandstone canyon wall (only remnants remain) is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. ■

THREE KID-FRIENDLY TRAVEL TRENDS TO CONSIDER FOR YOUR NEXT VACATION

In a post-COVID world, the possibilities for familyfriendly adventures are unprecedented. With an increasing number of families putting travel at the top of their priority lists, let’s dive into the trends and predictions that may make your next trip.

MICRO-EDUCATION ON VACATION

This will be the year where family travel and worldschooling intersect. Worldschooling, where families ditch conventional school in favor of travel-based experiential learning, might not be in the cards for everyone. But the principles of this approach will be applied broadly to family travel in 2024 and beyond.

Julie Frieder, Angela Heisten and Annika Paradise, co-authors of Wonder Year: A Guide to Long-Term Family Travel and Worldschooling, hone in on the value of

integrating education into family travel. “We know that young brains are heavily impacted by the experiences they have,” they note. “So why not share with them the art, architecture, history, food, culture and texture of societies besides the one in which they were raised?”

This year, families will incorporate the worldschooling philosophy into their vacations through micro-educational experiences. Parents will create their own mini curriculum for trips, reading books about the destination and local culture with their kids before the vacation and learning through museums and local workshops while traveling.

To build these learning opportunities into the travel experience, the Wonder Year co-authors recommend posing a few questions during the planning process, such as, “Do you have family goals, like exploring

150 |

your heritage or maximizing your time in nature?” or “Where is your comfort zone, and what experiences might reasonably push the edge for your family?”

Families can leverage the growing library of resources online—including worldschooling Facebook groups and blogs written by worldschooling families like Anna Everywhere, Where’s Sharon and World Travel Family—to customize educational experiences that will broaden the entire family’s understanding of a place.

MULTIGENERATIONAL FAMILY TRIPS

The best thing to bring when traveling with kids? The grandparents. Beyond providing help with child care (a boon when traveling with young children), more parents will opt to bring the grandparents along on vacation to create long-lasting bonds that transcend generations.

A recent study from the Family Travel Association and New York University discovered that more than 50% of parents surveyed said they are planning to travel with grandparents and children. With this uptick in multigenerational travel, we’ll likely see families choosing relaxing destinations (think beaches and resorts) over big-city trips in 2024.

Safaris are another type of multigenerational trip that will get a popularity boost this year, and Anton Gillis, CEO of Kruger Gate Hotel in South Africa, has already noticed an influx of families booking them. “Parents, little ones, elders and teens should find that a chance to unwind in nature, disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and marvel at breathtaking Kruger Park sightings—particularly The Big Five [buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, rhino]—is enjoyed by all,” he says.

Instead of taking trips that are heavy on logistical planning or involve multiple stops, multigenerational families will focus on destinations where they can stay put and go deep with local experiences that bring them together—like game drives, cooking classes, walking tours, dance lessons or simply relaxing by the pool.

SECOND CITIES A BIG HIT

With over-tourism affecting major travel destinations,

families will elect to visit the “second cities” of the world for trips that have fewer crowds and more positive impact. The Fodor’s 2024 No List highlights popular destinations that have been damaged by tourism impact, and major European cities like Athens and Venice are on the list of locales that should be reconsidered.

Instead, Thessaloniki is great for families visiting Greece, as is Verona in Italy. Travel writer Rick Steves refers to second cities as “back doors” and describes them as “undiscovered corners and untrampled towns that, for various reasons, missed the modern parade.”

Second cities can provide an outstanding cultural experience without the consequences and inconveniences associated with visiting a major tourist destination. After all, waiting in long lines, fighting for restaurant reservations and braving crowds with kids in tow aren’t exactly fun moments of a family trip. By selecting a second city instead of a main hub, families may have to make more of an effort to get there, but the experience at the destination will be more relaxed and help them maximize their precious time together.

SUSTAINABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY DRIVING DECISIONS

Eco-friendly lodging—whether vacation rentals, camping accommodations or hotels with sustainable practices—will gain favor among families this year. According to Booking.com’s 2024 Travel Predictions, 53% of global travelers are looking for accommodations with “wow-factor sustainability innovation.” Parents will use the intentional choice of lodging to educate children on the benefits of traveling in a manner that supports the environment around them.

The slow-travel trend will also pick up traction with families. According to Pinterest Predicts 2024, the search term “slow living” has increased significantly this year. The platform predicts that Gen Z and millennials will retreat to “laid-back locales that offer the opposite of a jam-packed itinerary.”

One bonus? A slower, more mindful approach to travel might make the planning process a bit more manageable for busy parents. ■

Experience

THE UPSCALE WELLNESS-ORIENTED SIX SENSES RESORT CHAIN AIMS TO ACTIVATE ALL OF YOUR SENSES DURING A VISIT. ITS DOURO VALLEY OUTPOST IN THE HEART OF PORTUGAL’S WINE COUNTRY DOES ALL OF THAT AND MORE.

Lisbon and Porto seem to be the “it” destinations for Portugal these days. We decided to mix it up for our trip this past October. We stayed in Lisbon a few days at the enchanting Palacio Ramalhete. Then we headed north to Portugal’s wine country, staying at Six Senses Douro Valley. We took the 2.5-hour train trip to Porto, where the resort picked us up in a Mercedes sedan for the scenic 90-minute drive to the resort.

Six Senses Douro Valley is perched on a hill overlooking the Douro River. As we drove up, I glimpsed the Quinta Vale de Abraão, a 19th-century manor that is the heart of the resort and was originally the residence of a prominent winemaking family. The Six Senses chain took over the property in 2015 and embarked on a complete restoration.

The sight made me catch my breath. I thought: This is a place I’m not going to leave in our four days. I was right. The beauty of the manor is matched by the landscape. Dotted with vineyards, the property and surrounding forest is filled with stunning, mature trees including Atlantic and blue cedars and verdant ferns.

I was surprised to discover that the majority of patrons are Americans. Our driver explained it: “We have the option of traveling all over Europe. The notion of going to the countryside to vacation has no appeal for the Portuguese or many Europeans.”

Aside from enjoying the delicious array of local wines—mostly red blends—most guests come to Six Senses for the spa. It is perhaps the best—and at 23,000 square feet, certainly the largest—spa I’ve ever visited. It goes above and beyond the standard highend resort spa in every way.

The highlight is the large indoor pool, which is dramatically set off by wall-to-ceiling windows. It has several basins, including a cold plunge, a warm

154 |
A sauna at the expansive spa with enchanting forest views. Above right: an Alchemy Bar workshop underway—one of many all-inclusive activities offered at the resort. Many of the ingredients used in the classes are sourced from the on-site organic garden.

whirlpool bath, and three separate massage stations for head, back and feet. A gigantic faucet spouts a hot massage jet. Jump from basin to basin, and then afterward you can listen to underwater meditation music.

The spa offers two saunas, including an infrared and Finnish. There are also salt and herbal warm rooms and a steam room. One sauna has glass walls with enchanting forest views.

The spa menu is progressive, offering guests the opportunity to have their sleep or skin analyzed. I opted for an above-par full-body massage and then did a wellness screening. An electrode placed on your finger measures key biomarkers to address body needs and overall health. You get more than a printout; you get to discuss the results with a wellness consultant.

The classes and activities are also nonpareil. Sure there’s yoga, and you can take e-bikes out for a spin.

But there’s also an Alchemy Bar where you can take a workshop, choosing from a range of aromatic herbs, salt, fruits, spices and oils to create your own scent, exfoliating scrub, sleep balm, soap, bath salt or candle. At the Earth Lab I dove into a workshop on making pickles, yogurt and sprouts. I also toured the organic vegetable garden.

Combining sophisticated contemporary decor and the charm of traditional architecture that includes original tiles from the 17th century, the resort is luxurious and comfortable. The rooms and suites in the main structure overlook either the river or the vineyard, and some have decks and hot tubs.

Tucked away in the gardens is a recently renovated old wine lodge with nine elegant rooms and suites that can be reserved individually or together. All the accomodations have access to a shared garden and gazebo,

as well as a heated pool and whirlpool. The lounge at the entrance of the structure offers a perpetual array of fresh juices, homemade cakes and snacks. We stayed in a suite, and I loved padding out in my robe to the lounge in the morning to grab coffee and fresh fruit.

For dining, guests can eat in the casual Quinta Bar & Lounge, which has pool tables for those inclined to play. Or you can go more upscale and dine at the resort’s flagship Vale de Abraão Restaurant. It features an open kitchen with wood-fired ovens, oversize fireplaces and several cozy spaces including a charming terrace. During summer you can dine in the garden.

The Wine Library, with cork floors and ceiling, is a focal point of the resort, and it offers tastings of local wines every evening. At the automatic wine bar, you can order a glass of wine with your room card at the push of a button.

Menus throughout are health-oriented, but in a way that doesn’t make you feel like you’re missing anything. All dishes are made with produce from the organic garden, and most are gluten- and lactose-free.

A don’t-miss for foodies: Experience the Chef’s Table, an intimate dinner with the chef at the open-air kitchen. I love to cook, and watching all the preparations and being able to converse with the chef about our gastronomic experience was a treat.

Six Senses Douro Valley is much more than a resort stay. I felt transported to a bygone era yet had all the modern luxuries. It was a fully immersive, unforgettable experience where, as the name suggests, all my senses were activated. My sixth sense tells me I will return someday. ■

Why We Travel

FOR OUR FOOD AND WINE EDITOR, IT’S MORE THAN JUST A VACATION.

I’m an accidental expert. Years ago, I started working in restaurants to pay my college loans. Because I could speak Spanish and French (and fake Italian and Portuguese, and mumble decent German), someone thought I should be the sommelier. The vineyards where I grew up on the Jersey Shore are few and far between, and wine was conspicuously absent from my Mormon parents’ table.

Becoming a sommelier was hardly my career plan, but a third go at grad school finally made me stop and think: Maybe I should just hurry up and do what I already do?

Over the course of my many years in the wine industry, it’s the travel that has kept me in it. I’ve brushed my teeth with “sheeraz” in Australia’s Barossa, climbed the aptly named Clos des Goisses (place of struggle) at Philipponnat in Champagne, crumbled albariza between my fingers amidst Jerez’s chalky Spanish soils, wandered the obsidian hillsides of Etna in Sicily.

Wine has been the most incredible passport for me. It’s a cultural catalyst that integrates language, climate and cuisine as surely as it fosters friendship. The act of breaking bread together, of pulling a cork and pouring some wine, is an ancient one. When we eat and drink together, we are reminded of our fundamental shared humanity.

Now more than ever, I look to these elemental experiences as a sign of hope in dark times. When we feed the stranger in our midst—whether the privileged wine writer who definitely can’t speak Italian or the hungry refugee mother fleeing political violence—we are celebrating the commonality of what it means to be human.

Why do we travel? Some of us travel as escapism, as a means of fleeing the banal realities of daily life. Others travel for adventure, for the opportunity to get out of one’s comfort zone. Some travel for relaxation, for an opportunity to unplug and recharge.

Me? I travel for the people. They’re usually vineyard workers who don’t speak English, but sometimes they’re fancy French folks or Silicon Valley tech scions. Mostly they’re farmers or at least people who care about listening to the ancient rhythms of place and season.

A dear friend once gave me what has become one of my most cherished talismans against chaos and hate. It’s a simple silver teaspoon engraved with the words “Build a Longer Table.” I use it to stir my coffee every morning. Let’s travel and share tables with people who may look, speak or eat differently than we do. Pull up a chair and expand the table … and definitely drink the good wine whenever you can. ■
