At the Joan’s on Third photo shoot with (clockwise from me) stylist Allison Rae Marsh, actress Nancy Travis, makeup artist Cat Sherwin and Joan’s manager Wendy Lorenz. Article on page 50.

My Space Our annual Home & Garden issue makes me think about how much a home can mean to a person. Lots of people charge their batteries by going out and connecting with people and doing exciting things. Not me. I regenerate by being at home. When I’m feeling tapped out from a busy week, I stay put. Puttering in my garden, cooking and even doing laundry (I fear I might regret sharing this) make me feel centered. The Encino home my husband and I created for our family has gone through several iterations. We bought it when we were in our early 30s. We both had jobs in the entertainment industry and were always tossing dinner parties where the guests were substantially older than us. Aside from all the ridiculously fancy wedding gifts we’d received, the most expensive item in our home was a sofa we’d splurged on from Mitchell Litt. At the time, I wanted to feel more sophisticated and, dare I say, older? After the Cannes Film Festival one year, we rented a car and drove through the south of France on a somewhat euphoric shopping spree. We bought a half dozen pieces in a town called Arles. I’ll never forget the glee at unpacking those crates and placing the antiques in our home. I finally felt like an adult! Cut to nearly 20 years later. Some friends were at our house. One of them mentioned a neighbor’s home was for sale and the asking price. I asked her how it compared to ours—i.e., could we possibly rake in that kind of money? She said matter-of-factly, “Well, their house is more updated than yours.” At that moment, it was as if my rose-tinted glasses had been yanked off. The kitchen with its muddy tiles and heavy black wrought iron looked … well … provincial. The sofas were worn from years of our trying to scrub out stains from sloppy teenagers and dogs that couldn’t care less that the chenille was from the Pacific Design Center. The French antiques looked … well … old. And point of fact: I wanted to feel young. I turned into something of a madwoman, redecorating several rooms with a decidedly transitional vibe and then doing a complete overhaul of the kitchen. Gotta say, the results are pleasing. The house is now more reflective of us as a couple and the way we live. (Though both our boys have returned to the nest; it could be some time before they can afford LA rents.) Recently I considered getting rid of some of the French antiques. But I changed my mind. They are a tie to our past and I’m not going to erase it. And point of fact: They’re beautifully crafted and well preserved. I have an appreciation of that now. Though I still want to feel young.

What has made the biggest difference is not what Dr. Tolbert has done to help my back. It’s the way that she and her entire staff have treated me from the very beginning. For them, it was never about a broken down body part. It was about helping me find me again.

— Darren Kavinoky

IMAGINE IF YOU COULD REVERSE THE AGING PROCESS USING YOUR BODY’S OWN RECOVERY SYSTEM

The Tolbert Center difference According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, chronic pain now affects more people than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Most people over 50 are given the option of surgery, pills or physical therapy to treat any number of musculoskeletal conditions. But, at the Tolbert Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness, a Los Angeles-area state-of-the-art medical facility, we believe there is a better way to heal people. If you’re looking to feel like you’re young again, Dr. Glenna Tolbert and her team of physicians and nutrition and fitness specialists can work with you to decrease your pain, enhance your performance and keep you moving—all without surgery. Imagine that! We offer four main treatments to restore the function of your body and make you feel faboluous.

DNA Testing As a result of an injury or the aging process, medications, stress and chronic illness can rob our bodies of their necessary elements. With DNA micro nutrient testing, Dr. Tolbert has decreased patients’ pain by supplementing their diets with minerals and vitamins to restore their bodies’ balance.

Exercise We incorporate exercise into the healing process because, as Dr. Tolbert always says, exercise is the secret to the fountain of youth. Bring in your golf club, dancing shoes or yoga mat and get personalized injury prevention training or enroll in our performance enhancement program.

Regenerative Medicine Regenerative medicine uses minimally invasive procedures, along with a patient’s own body, to regrow and repair damaged cartilage and ligaments. We use tools such as prolotherapy, PRP and stem cell injections to accomplish this goal without surgery. We are even beginning to use regenerative medicine for hair loss.

Mind-Body Connection The evidence shows that the power of the mind is important to healing the body, and vice versa. That’s why we recently added a psychologist to our team to educate patients about the strength of the mind as it relates to the body.

Tree Whisperer Arborist Michael Frilot on how to keep Valley trees healthy and vibrant. ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE GEORGIADES

Whether it’s a pine dying from bark beetle disease or a drought-stressed tree toppling over, many of us have mourned the loss of mature trees on our property over the past few years. Michael Frilot has ardently worked for the past 40 years to prevent that with his Reseda-based company Arbor Solutions. Here VB editor Linda Grasso chats with him about nurturing show-stopping trees.

What is the best thing you can do for your trees? Mulch. Trees love decomposed plant material. Think about when you go into a forest—there’s a layer of three or four feet of decomposed natural material. That’s how trees thrive.

Bark beetle disease has been a problem in the Valley. How do you know if a tree has it? Bark beetles like to attack pine and spruce trees. And most prefer stressed, weakened trees like those suffering from a drought. Some bark beetles attack from the top down. You’ll notice the needles at the top turning brown. Often by the time you see this, it is too late to save the tree and it has to be cut down or it will fall. The western bark beetle kills a tree from the inside out. It starts at the trunk and works its way to the top. Then you’ll see sap coming out. Then all the insects come, and if the tree remains untreated, it will die. Turpentine beetles, on the other hand, attack at the base of the tree. Again, you’ll see sap coming out. How does one prevent bark beetle diseases? Mulch and irrigate properly. Mulch is the best natural insecticide or fungicide you can find.

So how can we mimic that here? Put leaf litter in a compost bin or keep your leaves under the tree. Then add mulch, maintaining two to four inches at all times. I replace mulch one to two times a year—and I toss in my coffee grounds. What about manure? I’m not a fan of things like steer or chicken manure. Or bone or blood meal for that matter. A little bit of manure is okay but manure is full of salt and that’s not great for a tree. What should we avoid with trees? Sprinklers that spray the trunk. Don’t plant anything within two to three feet of the trunk. Put mulch or decomposed wood or bark under a tree and use soaker or drip hose. What about watering? Over- or under-watering is another problem. Read up on your trees and give them the amount of water they require. Often people turn off their irrigation in the winter, but some of our winters have been dry and certain types of trees have needed irrigation. Even an oak, which is drought tolerant, needs a certain amount of water in the winter.

Trees like redwoods can really struggle in the summer. You have to water a redwood two to four hours once a week in summer and you need to make sure that the water penetrates. That’s why mulch is so important. It opens the pores of the soil so it can absorb the water. Where is the best place to plant a tree? Not in the middle of a lawn! Typically people fertilize their lawns with 20% nitrogen. High levels of nitrogen are not good for the long-term health of trees. I rarely use more than 5% nitrogen. And if the tree is planted in the middle of a lawn, sprinklers spray the trunk. How frequently should we prune? Every two to three years or every two to five years, depending on the species, location and age of the tree. The older trees get, the more frequently they need attention. What can you do to boost production on fruit trees? With most low-producing fruit trees the issue is pollination. I suggest planting things nearby that attract bees and birds like African basil or bee balm. ■

Curtain Call

The Valley music scene is about to get a big boost with a groundbreaking alliance between Michael Feinstein and Upstairs at Vitello’s.

Fans of jazz and live performance have been patronizing Upstairs at Vitello’s since 1964. The venue, perched above Vitello’s Restaurant in Studio City, is known for its intimate performance room, which holds just 125 people. The owners have taken the club in a couple of different directions in recent years (at one point the venue was called the E Spot Lounge when Sheila E got involved) but now it seems to be zeroing in on a more refined mission. In midJune, the venue will debut as Feinstein’s at Vitello’s, bringing in singer and pianist Michael Feinstein as a partner.

The multi-platinum-selling, five-time Grammy-nominated recording artist also helms Feinstein’s at the Nikko in San Francisco and Feinstein’s/54 Below in New York. “We will bring many of the performers who have played in my other clubs in San Francisco and New York as well as push the envelope of what a nightclub experience is about. These days there is so much interesting talent and performance art and unusual kinds of presentations that we want to make part of our room,” Michael explains. The alliance comes after a serendipitous meeting with Vitello’s managing partner Brad Roen. Last September Brad went with a friend to a show at 54 Below and Michael was on stage and “I just fell in love with his style. I kept thinking, what if we could create something like the experience at 54 Below with Michael at Vitello’s? A few weeks later, Michael Feinstein walks in the door as a guest at Vitello’s. What are the chances of that?” he laughs. Brad introduced himself and the discussions took off. Brad says the style of music won’t change overall. Feinstein’s at Vitello’s patrons will still see jazz and comedy acts, for example; there will just be more cabaret and Broadway. Tickets for shows will be

priced between $75 and $100. Michael himself is expected to take the stage three to four times a year. Along with the name change is a facelift. The upstairs loft area in the front is being transformed into a 1930s-style speakeasy. And the larger performance room will resemble a 1930s “Kit Kat or Moulin Rouge-style club complete with red velvet and chandeliers. It will be more of an experience when you walk up those stairs,” says Brad. Michael is currently remodeling a home in Pasadena, where he has served as Principal Pops Conductor for the Pasadena POPS since 2012. The entertainer says he started his career in piano bars and nightclubs, where he learned that people crave personal contact and connection—and that, in part, is what attracted him to Vitello’s. “When people can really see your eyes and feel your presence only a few feet away, it totally changes the connection and bonds us deeper to the songs and to each other. With the enhancements we’re adding to the space, I feel that it has the potential to become the premier nightclub in Los Angeles, and that is something we will work hard to achieve.” ■

S

et back behind a barrier of mature trees and an ivy-covered fence, Grant and Lysa Heslov’s modern farmhouse is barely visible. But once you’re inside the gate of their Fryman Canyon property, it immediately takes center stage. A twostory-high, glass-paned door welcomes visitors into a luxurious, light-filled living space. The striking entrance sets the mood for the 5,000-square-foot residence, which the Heslovs spent a year renovating before moving in. “I grew up in the South and wanted a farmhouse,” says Georgia native Lysa. “Grant wanted modern, so we created a modern farmhouse.” Built in 1958, the three-bedroom, six-bath house was a traditional California-style ranch with some Craftsman elements mixed in. It had a partial second floor, dark hardwood floors and restrictive, walled-in rooms. The Heslovs were attracted to the structure’s great bones and spacious lot. The house lies on nearly an acre in the wooded Studio City enclave popular among Hollywood A-listers for its privacy. Grant is an Academy Award-winning producer (Argo) and writer. He is also a partner with George Clooney in Smokehouse Pictures, which is currently working on the new satirical miniseries Catch-22 on Hulu. Lysa is founder of the LA-based nonprofit after-school program Children Mending Hearts, as well as a documentary filmmaker (Served Like a Girl). She is currently working on an eight-part series about the murder of Teresa Sievers, a Florida doctor. The Heslov household also includes daughter Mya, 16, and four rescue dogs. Daughter Olivia, 23, lives nearby in Studio City. To bring their vision to life, the couple hired Mark Langos of Mark Langos Interior Designs. Along with the glass entrance, the

most dramatic part of the project was transforming the living room, hallway and den into one large open space. “I hate walls,” says Lysa. And, in fact, there are few on the first floor. Even Lysa’s office opens directly into the Carrera marble kitchen. There is no door. While the open floor plan is ideal for entertaining, it presented several design challenges. “Once the rooms were opened up, we were faced with several different ceiling heights and roof pitches, and multiple paths, entries and exits from the new space,” Mark explains. “The issue was how to create a comfortable atmosphere and focal point in this grand room.” His solution: a neutral beige, white and gray color palette, clean lines, luxurious materials, and a harmonious balance of traditional farmhouse elements with a modern twist. In the living room, Mark set the woodburning fireplace in a concrete wall, adding built-in storage for freshly cut logs and offering texture and interest. Next to the fireplace is a large sliding barn door, and across the room a gorgeous, contemporary built-in bar. “That was one of the things I really wanted because we like to entertain,” shares Grant, who grew up in Palos Verdes. “I also wanted a lot of light,” he says, gesturing to the retractable, sliding glass doors that fully open to reveal the backyard. Just steps away from the bar, glass doors open to reveal an almost vintage scene—a covered front porch with rocking chairs. “It’s lovely to sit out and have a coffee or glass of wine and smell the lavender and rosemary,” says Lysa. The interplay between modern and rustic carries into the dining room, where walls are covered in shiplap—wooden boards commonly used as exterior siding of barns and sheds. For the family’s large gatherings, Mark designed a farm table with modern elements. The sleek table has a steel X-base and streamlined ladder-back chairs. “We wanted the pieces to be clean and contemporary while still maintaining a casual simplicity,” Mark explains. The room’s aesthetic is completed with black and white framed photos, taken by Grant, and a string of exposed Restoration Hardware filament light bulb pendants suspended from the ceiling by a wire. The master bedroom, which features a picturesque view of the backyard and a largescreen TV that retracts into the ceiling at the

Mya’s oversize bedroom and Grant’s office, which houses his Argo Best Picture Oscar, are upstairs. The grounds were completely overhauled as well. The landscape design, created by JMS Design Associates, incorporates a variety of drought-tolerant plants like lavender and upright rosemary, as well as faux grass.

A large covered patio houses a bar and professional-caliber kitchen complete with a Big Green Egg smoker/grill and a pizza oven. “We actually use everything here,” shares Grant, whose specialty is short rib tacos. Living amid such causal elegance in a space they custom designed, it’s easy to see why the Heslovs never want to leave. “It’s our refuge,” says Lysa. “We feel like we are living in four-star hotel—with lots of dogs.” ■

Color My World

Bold strokes of color define a dramatic living room transformation in Studio City.

When Jennifer Grey (jennifergreyinteriors. com) got hired to redo the Studio City living room of an actress and a writer, she knew, from a creative standpoint, that it would be an extraordinary experience. “I’d worked for this couple before and they are quintessential creatives. The woman in particular loves to push boundaries and have fun.” At their first meeting, Jennifer showed the woman a swatch of fuchsia fabric by Jonathan Adler and asked if she’d consider it for window treatments. “Jonathan Adler is known for his cheeky, fun approach to décor, and the fabric just has a lot of pop to it. Immediately her eyes lit up and so that fabric became our starting point.” Jennifer opted for floor-to-ceiling curtains on two windows and a Roman shade with an outside mount on the third. “It is just more interesting from a visual standpoint,” Jennifer says of her decision to incorporate the Roman shade. “To have three windows with the very same treatment would feel kind of boring.” The bright color palette was rounded out with rich hues of navy and teal velvet on the custom-made sofa and chairs and a pop of yellow with accessories. “In my opinion, bringing in just that small bit of yellow was key. All the blue tones really needed to be broken up.” Wall paint was kept neutral with Muslin by Dunn-Edwards and trim in Simply White by Benjamin Moore. The finishing touch was the wool chevron rug which, at first glance, gave the couple reason to pause. “This was one of those situations where the rug needed to be bold enough to stand up to the fuchsia drapes. I asked them to trust me—and they did. We all ended up loving that rug. It brings the design all together. ” ■

Described by some as a “material alchemist,” Monica Wyatt transforms seemingly random objects into stunning works of art. WRITTEN BY HADLEY HALL MEARES PHOTOGRAPHED BY MONICA OROZCO

onica Wyatt came by her chaotic creator role honestly. “I grew up in this Dr. Demento kind of aesthetic of materials,” she says. “My dad is a physicist-inventor, and as the weekend janitor and chief bottle washer for many years, I was surrounded by test tubes, lasers, petri dishes and other laboratory wonders. I would collect all types of found and broken knickknacks and fashion them into odd keepsakes, sometimes within glass petri dishes or test tubes from my dad’s lab.” Today, Monica’s laboratory is her lovely home in the hills of Studio City, which she shares with her husband, the TV producer Mark Horowitz, and their two teenage children. A former TV director and producer, Monica found herself adrift when she became a stay-at-home mom. “I went from this high-powered, full-speed-ahead, all-consuming job to being here full time,” she recalls. “I was used to all-nighters and these crazy hours. But it was motherhood that brought me to my knees.” Motherhood would also change the course of her professional life. As an artist, she started out by creating highly personal assemblages as presents for her husband. She then branched out into mobiles and fluid, experimental sculptures cast in bronze—much of her work incorporating the theme of motherhood. One sculpture, called “I’m Listening,” features two abstract figures lovingly bending over a small child. “When I named it and I told it to my son,” she remembers, “I said, ‘I just finished this. I’m going to title it, ‘I’m Listening.’ And he said, ‘No, no, no—it should really be ‘You Did What?!’” For Monica, the process of creation starts in the world, not the studio. “I find materials everywhere,” she says. “I find them on the sides of roads. I find them at swap meets. I find them at recycling places.” “I might work weeks or months doing repetitive, obsessive constructing such as with my electrical capacitor works. I twist together these tiny inorganic materials and transform them into sculptures that represent shapes found in nature such as masses of moss and deep-sea life,” she explains. “ I fully delight in my wacky world of mad scientist experimentation, wonder and invention.” Over the past decade, her one-time hobby has become a bona fide profession. For Continuum, her 2018 solo show at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History, she completed a huge installation featuring thousands of different-size acrylic globes and netting. Noteworthy collectors, including director Joe Russo, have purchased her work. In June, she will have a show at The Loft at Liz’s in Los Angeles. “Like my artwork that is so much about the cyclic nature of things, I feel that my life has come full circle. I never could have imagined that as an adult I would get to throw myself wholeheartedly into my childhood obsession of collecting and making something from nothing,” she says. “It’s never easy. There’s an enormous amount of energy and concentration that goes into it. But it’s so joyful for me. I mean, it’s truly my happy place.” ■ Learn more about Monica on monicawyatt.com or on Instagram @monica_wyatt_artist.

SNAKESKIN IDEAL FOR: The woman looking to take a sophisticated yet subtle approach to prints. I suggest using snakeskin in an outfit with a minimalist color palette. The print is eye-catching enough on its own, so the rest of the outfit should be about softening the look. PAIR WITH: Solid, clean tones like white, black, camel and sand. I like to wear my snakeskin blouse with a white jean and white Gucci slides. Rag & Bone T-shirt; $115

EARTH TONES IDEAL FOR: A more sophisticated shopper—a woman who follows trends and gravitates to a clean, minimalistic look—and available at many different price points. These neutrals were represented on the runway as full head-to-toe monochromatic outfits. If that’s not for you, I suggest picking a statement piece (coat/trousers) in an earth tone and then incorporating warmer tones in other pieces. WHEN TO WEAR: Suitable for numerous occasions—from the office to a summer wedding. Zadig & Voltaire prewashed shirt; $258

WIDE-LEG JEANS BEST SUITED FOR: Shorter women, because it enhances and elongates the figure. Wide-leg jeans look best when paired with a fitted blouse or top because it balances out the proportions of the generous cut on the leg. BEST WORN WITH: A heel, because it helps create the effect of a longer, slimmer silhouette. Mother “Tomcat” high-rise jeans; $238

NEON AIMED AT: The fashion risk-taker not afraid to try color. The trend is loud, so when incorporating neon into an outfit, make sure you keep everything else simple and minimal. PERFECT FOR: Your next beach getaway! Gucci neon leather mules; $790

SEE-THROUGH SUITABLE FOR: Any age when utilized in the right way. Wearing a seethrough blouse doesn’t appeal to everyone, so I typically play it safe and incorporate the clear trend into an accessory—shoes, clutch or jewelry. HOW I ROCK IT: I have a pair of Manolo Blahnik sandals with dual clear straps that are my go-to for business luncheons as well as a night out. Valentino transparent PVC shopper trimmed in black leather with inner, removable red leather clutch; $1,170

A Matter of Taste

A Pasadena shopkeeper expands her brand to Woodland Hills, offering a curated selection of sophisticated items for the home. Carrie Davich had been running Maude Woods in Pasadena for nine years when she heard about the opening of the new Valley Country Mart (20929 Ventura Boulevard). “I was shocked when I could find no real home shops in the Woodland Hills area. It seemed there was a real opportunity there.” Her new outpost, tucked in the attractive horseshoe-shaped outdoor mall, showcases Carrie’s talent as a buyer, honed from years of shopping at the Rose Bowl flea market with girlfriends. “They would always marvel at how we could all be looking at the same table full of ‘stuff,’ and I would be the only one to see the one great thing. It turned into the ‘thrill of the hunt’ for me, as I didn’t really need anything else. Our attic started to fill up, and I joked with my husband that I was going to open a store someday. He called my bluff!” Carrie’s keen eye and good taste is evident throughout the space, which showcases a selection of both old and new—from accessories to furniture. There are vintage items from estate sales that have been restored and upholstered as well as contemporary pieces culled from gift shows. “I believe that many different styles can live in the same space. It is just a matter of how it is put together. It’s the layers that give a home personality—your personality,” she explains. The retailer is especially drawn to unique lines that offer one-of-a-kind pieces. “One is Art Department, a husband/wife team who are originally from Russia. They do amazing, glazed terra-cotta frames and pottery that I‘ve never seen before.” Another eye-catching item is an eastern European, handspun linen “eye of the dragon” framed panel. “I love the history of old textiles. I started sewing when I was 8, made most of my own clothes through high school and am now a big needlepointer.” Maude Woods is named after Carrie’s maternal great-grandmother who—you guessed it—was an artist. ■

URBAN CHIC RETREAT After a dramatic $20 million renovation, The Garland goes one step further, unveiling a new, state-of-the-art redesign of The Garland Ballroom, and cementing its status as an award-winning event and destination hotel. WRITTEN BY KAREN YOUNG

mong James Crank’s fondest childhood memories is time spent with his parents at The Beverly Garland Hotel. The iconic 257-room resortstyle hotel was built by his father, Fillmore Crank, in 1972; and named for his actress mother, best known for her roles in My Three Sons and The Scarecrow and Mrs. King. “I’d wander around the hotel with my father, who explained the purpose of the hotel’s design as rooted in the early California/Mexican tradition of earth colors, Saltillo tiles, courtyards and wooden beams,” recalls James. “My mom’s mantra was ‘It’s the personal touch that counts,’ and she would take me along to stylize the guestrooms with funky clay urns and Laurel Canyon textiles … she’d even change light bulbs and rearrange flowers. “My parents were just way ahead of their time. Their original motor lodge had suites with waterbeds, rooms with orange shag carpet and avocado drapery. Our bellman even wore orange vests. It was groovy, elegant and swank, but in those days, hotel operators just could not go it alone and they had to franchise.” After his father passed away in 1999, James joined the hotel’s management team and worked alongside his mother until her passing in 2008. He is now the asset manager of the hotel and managing partner of the Rio Vista Development Company, which owns the seven-acre North Hollywood property on Vineland Avenue. When James took the reins he decided

to turn The Beverly Garland into an independent boutique property, renaming it The Garland, and spearheading a stunning $20 million renovation. Completed in 2015, the transformation includes 20,000 square feet of redesigned indoor/outdoor event spaces catering to groups of all needs and sizes, lush landscaping, chic contemporary guest rooms, and the creation of The Front Yard, a stylish, neighborhood restaurant with garden patio and fireplaces. “I feel so absolutely fortunate and honored to have been given control over my parents’ wonderful legacy,” says James. “I found it really easy to imagine the hotel’s redesign in my parent’s original vision as a boutique property.” Acclaimed as an urban oasis with stylish retro-cool design that has been embraced by tourists and locals alike, The Garland has been bestowed with national media recognition, including four consecutive years running in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards for Top 10 Hotels in Los Angeles. In March, The Garland unveiled its latest dramatic improvement—a $1 million-plus renovation of the 5,100-square-foot Grand Ballroom. “With the redesign, we were seeking to meet the technological needs of our clients while also elevating and modernizing the look and feel of the space with new carpet, custom lighting, noise-dampening ceiling tiles and larger entry points featuring custom doors,” explains General Manager Scott Mills. “The ceiling reaches a height of 13 feet with multiple rigging points for presentation screens, allowing for theatrical lighting and

for over 15 years … we embody the idea of feeling like you are stepping into our home with genuine hospitality.” But what guides James most is his parents’ philosophy about the hotel’s place and purpose. “They both deeply believed that the local community was vital in weaving a successful neighborhood and city.” James points to The Front Yard, helmed by executive chef Larry Greenwood, as the community centerpiece. “By designing the restaurant around the beauty of the outdoors, and championing local flavors and dishes, I can offer my neighbors a fresh and fun destination to gather.“ “We do our best to include local guests as well as our out-of-town travelers in our yearround programming,” says General Manager Scott Mills. “During the summer we host a concert series in our private outdoor venue, Beverly Park. In spring and fall, we host our biannual community block party with proceeds benefiting a local charity of choice.” The Garland also organizes pop-up events

and a weekly Dinner and a Movie series with guests moving from The Front Yard to the Beverly Garland Theatre for a family-friendly film screening. When it comes to The Garland’s strengths, James views its employees at the top of the list. “One of the great parts of this business is building a team of diverse, creative and imaginative people. It’s a beautiful thing and is reflected in how often guests comment about the sincerity of our staff.” “As a community staple for nearly 50 years, our hope is to continue to elevate the experience of our guests and serve as a retreat for upwardly mobile families, single business travelers, and adult getaways,” adds Scott. “And with our latest event space renovations, we are looking forward to welcoming members of the surrounding community for anything from a large-scale party to a dinner for two.” The Garland, 4222 Vineland Ave. North Hollywood, 818-980-8000

projector installation without a ground footprint.” He adds that the most exciting aspect is how the revitalized ballroom now complements the hotel redesign. Just steps outside the Grand Ballroom is Beverly Park, a verdant hidden garden providing an additional 4,000 square feet of outdoor space. Larger parties will be inspired by the bucolic charm of the adjacent Beverly Park West, offering more than 5,000 square feet of newly landscaped event space that can be transformed into a reception area, seated dinner area and dance floor. California Meetings + Events, naming The Garland a Best Outdoor Venue, recognized “the splendor of it all, complete with sycamore trees and dazzling lights.” Complementing the wide choice of venues is the banquet team, which takes pride in ensuring every moment is cherished. “When you come to The Garland, you are in the company of family,” says Michelle Hunter, Director of Catering. “Many members of our banquet team have been with us

Actress Nancy Travis shares her favorite places in the Valley. PHOTOGRAPHED BY MICHAEL BACKER NANCY STYLED BY ALLISON RAE MARSH MAKEUP BY CAT SHERWIN

Actress Nancy Travis may live in Brentwood, but she spends most of her time on this side of the hill. For the past seven years she has filmed the Fox sitcom Last Man Standng at CBS Studio Center on Radford. She works on the show five days a week and spends Tuesday nights taping in front of a live audience. “So Studio City is like a second home,” she quips. “It is the best place to film a series because the lot is so ideally located. Everything I need is literally within walking distance. I can use the

organic snacks and lunches they have to go. They even have a daily burrito special, which would tempt me if I weren’t a vegan. 12077 Ventura Place, Studio City

1. JOAN’S ON THIRD I am at Joan’s virtually every day. Ventura Place, where it’s located, is one of my favorites streets in all of LA. I love Joan’s soups, bowls and their southwest salad. Their avocado toast is amazing as well. It is a great place to meet a friend for lunch or have a meeting. Afterward, I’ll often hit Habit Footwear. I have bought more shoes from Habit than I care to count. 12059 Ventura Place, Studio City

3. BAMBOO CUISINE This place holds a lot of memories for me. When my parents lived on Hortense Street in Studio City, we came here a lot on the weekends. My mom loved Chinese food, and orange chicken is always the dish we get here. The wonderful thing about Bamboo is that it serves great food that is also comfort food—all the dishes we’ve come to love at a Chinese restaurant. And it survives on Ventura Boulevard, where restaurants seem to come and go. This is my go-to when I’m craving Chinese and I want a bit of nostalgia. 14010 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks

2. ALFRED COFFEE This is my go-to place for coffee. I usually swing through on the way to the set. I am a coffee snob. Not that I need a fancy cappuccino; I just love amazing, freshly brewed, artisanal coffee. Just a drip or a pour-over with almond milk. Alfred’s has a very vibrant atmosphere. It always seems to be filled with young artists or writers as well as very fit people who take classes at the cycling place next door. It’s always bustling, especially in the morning. I love the

For great fresh juices, I typically order the Green Machine and Brain Juice. They’ve also got tasty wraps and salads. Everything is so healthy. When I feel like I’ve OD’d on coffee I like to come here for a juice or smoothie—anything with ginger or a ton of greens in it. 11948 Ventura Blvd, Studio City ■

Mangia! Mangia! Trattoria & Market del Sole in Sherman Oaks takes an authentic, almost familial approach to southern Italian fare—and premium goods to go. WRITTEN BY KAREN YOUNG | PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O’DONNELL

Chances are you’ve driven past the bright yellow awning of Trattoria & Market del Sole on the Boulevard numerous times without giving it a glance. Free from flack puffery, it’s not included on any “hot” lists. And that’s precisely the reason why this neighborhood Italian restaurant should be on your radar. Open since last August, the eatery, which adjoins a gourmet market, offers a casual fine dining menu with an approachable price point. Focusing on southern Italian specialties, the emphasis is on scratch-made sauces with olive oil (as opposed to butter) authentically prepared by Italian-born chefs.

52

Starters and antipasti include a hearty pasta e fagioli soup and calamari fritti, lightly battered and accompanied by a roastedgarlic tomato sauce. Sandwiches are served on ciabatta; choose pizza with regular or thin crust. Among the entrées, branzino is imported from Italy; linguini vongole is chock full of clams and prepared perfectly al dente. And the melanzana (eggplant) di parmigiana tastes as if it was made in Nonna’s kitchen. Don’t miss the tiramisu, made in-house and served in a bowl. The eatery and market are both overseen by Hoss Zargaran, a certified sommelier, master chef, and food and beverage director

whose career includes working with Joachim Splichal’s Patina Restaurant Group, Vibrato Grill and Nick & Stef’s Steakhouse. The cozy space features a leather banquette and sunny, color-washed walls with soft, mood-setting music; Frank Sinatra was playing on a recent visit. A four-seat counter opens to the small kitchen where pizza and freshly baked rolls can be seen coming and going from the nearby oven. Quite surprising is the full bar program. Cocktails, priced at a reasonable $12.50 ($1 less at lunch), are prepared with housemade bitters, and muddled with fresh fruit and herbs. Classics include the negroni, martini and manhattan. A unique amaro bar holds a finely curated collection of amari—a centuries-old herbal-based Italian liqueur known for its low alcohol content and digestive qualities. The market’s takeaway counter mirrors the trattoria menu and has tables for patrons who wish to eat in-house. A deli case is filled with cheese and charcuterie. Shelves are lined with predominately Italian and French wines, plus a sprinkling of California varietals (prices from $10 a bottle), as well as a selection of imported groceries and fine liqueurs. ■ 14230 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks

Tea for Two

Longtime friends and London transplants turn their love of all things British into a local events company. WRITTEN BY HEATHER DAVID PHOTOGRAPHED BY AMY SMYTH

As with most Brits, Suzannah “Suz” Longman and Rebecca “Bex” Norris have always enjoyed a proper afternoon tea, complete with fresh-baked scones, preserves and clotted cream. Now living in LA, the duo is sharing that beloved tradition, and others, with their events company Crumpet. Suz and Bex first met working on the reality singing show, The X Factor UK, back in 2005. They reunited when both of their husbands (who work in the showbiz industry) were relocated here and both women were going through something of an adjustment. “We both had a great life, friends and career in London and we were really evenly matched with our husbands. It’s a really strange thing to leave it all behind and start again,” says Bex, who worked as a top-tier publicist in London before moving here seven years ago. Now, along with her husband and two small children, she calls Studio City home. “I started down this road a few years ago when I was asked by the London-based concierge service Quintessentially to put together a proper English tea service, doing

Rebecca Norris and Suzannah Longman

the flowers and making everything look beautiful,” says Bex. The idea for Crumpet came together when Suz, a professionally trained chef, moved to LA with her husband in 2016. Bringing their different skill sets to the mix, the two joined forces, making a conscious decision to integrate a bit of the relaxed SoCal vibe into Crumpet events. “It’s very important for us to keep things traditional but not too stuffy,” says Suz, a former food editor for Good Housekeeping UK. Crumpet’s afternoon tea always features homemade scones with berry preserves alongside real clotted cream, which Suz makes from scratch—a meticulous 16-hour process. And with another nod to SoCal, they also offer homemade vegan and glutenfree options. “After many tests I have finally mastered the gluten-free version of the Victorian sponge cake that’s light, buttery and melts in your mouth. We’re also proud to include our delicious vegan scone, which pairs perfectly with our clotted coconut cream,” comments Suz. “We of course have finger sandwiches but add our own twist on the fillings like mango chutney deviled egg, and cucumber, cream cheese and mint,” Suz goes on to say. They also offer evening roasts served family style alongside all of the traditional fixings: roast beef with Yorkshire pudding and horseradish sauce; chicken with onion and sage stuffing, roasted potatoes and gravy; or the very popular lamb roast served with mint sauce and sweet red currant jelly. While clients include those who simply enjoy British culture, many are British transplants, just like Suz and Bex. “The response has been so lovely,” says Suz. “It’s like giving those little homesick hearts a hug, and it helps us feel grounded in our new lives too.” ■

From the moment Alli Webb opened up her first Drybar in Brentwood in 2010, the concept was hit. Now she hopes to do it again with Squeeze, which offers massage services in a tech-forward, sophisticated setting. The first Squeeze opened in March in Studio City, not far from where Alli resides with her husband and two kids. “The Studio City Drybar is here, along with our offices, so it just made sense to open our first Squeeze here,” shares Alli. Alli is partnering in the business, which she hopes to franchise, with Brittany Driscoll, former Drybar VP of marketing. The founders hope that Squeeze will fill in the hole between discount chains and pricey high-end hotels and spas. As with Drybar, customers book online, filling out preferences including whether you like silence or friendly chitchat during your

Peace Garden When TV and film composer Nate Barr hired landscape designer Zabra Yee to transform his Topanga Canyon property, his instructions were simple. “I was familiar with her work and told her basically ‘do your thing.’ I just wanted an area where I could sit and relax with a fountain. I love the sound of running water,” Nate says. With loads of room for creativity, Zabra dove in. “I knew right away I wanted to make a peace garden with the elements of water, fragrance and sound. The property has magnificent views that stretch to the ocean and we wanted to design around that.” First on the agenda: the focal points. Zabra and her crew, Maria Perez and Fermin Ruelas, purchased three structural I-beams from Industrial Metal Supply Company in Sun Valley. Two were placed in succession, essentially framing a view of some blossoming cherry trees in an adjacent grassy field. A flagstone walkway edged in silver-hued dymondia was installed under the archways and a hardenbergia vine that blooms with pea-shaped purple flowers in winter was planted on one of the I-beams. The third beam was used to hold a swinging daybed that Zabra crafted from an old door. For the landscape designer, it’s not about creating symmetry or an overly manicured look. “I like planting things in groups, typically a group of one variety in three and then another variety in a group of five. It’s about creating points of interest with a lot of texture and complementary colors.” A custom-made Lima bean-shaped fountain was placed near the edge of the property with a mix of water-wise perennials, shrubs, grasses and succulents in the foreground. A concrete fountain purchased from Garden Temple in Studio City sets off the entrance of the garden. Behind it, on the hillside, purple lantana, multicolored African daisy and an acacia provide a colorful, textured palette. “Walk-on” mulch provided the finishing touch to the garden, which must be watered two to three times a week in summer. Nate was out of town when Zabra and her team installed the garden. When he returned after a month of travel, he was delighted. “I come out here every day and it’s like living on the edge of the wild in Topanga. It is so peaceful here; it feels like there is nothing below me. It’s a beautiful little oasis in the middle of a canyon.

Romantic Garden When Jon Goldstein of Jonny Appleseed Landscaping was brought in to recreate the garden at a Toluca Lake home for Tina Simpson (mom to singer/fashion designer Jessica and singer Ashley) he had only one directive: “She wanted color.” That was music to Jon’s ears. “My favorite kind of garden is a romantic one which uses lots of color—like painter Claude Monet’s in Giverny. While visiting France, I got really inspired by his garden, which uses yellows, oranges and reds especially in the western beds. As the sun sets, it catches those colors with the golden light. I often try to use that technique on gardens I design, including this one.” But there was one challenge: The house, a classic 1929 Spanish, has tumbled, reclaimed brick paving and terra-cotta tile throughout the garden, offering limited planting space. So Jon decided to design a garden using classic, vintage Italian terra-cotta pots. “The goal was to create pockets of color and to keep the eye moving toward the view of the lake. The pots are all different, and I love that they are not perfect.” In terms of arranging the flowers, Jon prefers to do asymmetrical groupings that go from large to small. “Usually I will let one variety predominate in the pot and then plant to fill all of the holes around the largest flower. That flower is essentially the anchor of the design of the pot,” he explains. He cautions that a potted garden is not for everyone. “It is labor-intensive because you have to switch out the pots with new plants a couple times a year and that can be expensive.” He adds fresh mulch (an organic mix with a base of leaves and grass clippings bought by the truckload) and fertilizes every six to eight weeks in the growing season and occasionally uses ironite to help the soil. At this home, the pots are not hooked up to sprinkler lines; they are hand-watered twice a week through the summer. The intention of a romantic garden is to create and foster feelings of intimacy and connection. It seems to have worked here. In what can only be described as a poetic footnote, while Jon was creating the garden for Tina, the duo fell in love and are now engaged. ■

CROSSO HITS Two vacation rentals that are a little bit country and a whole lot of style. WRITTEN BY DARREN ELMS

WHAT: Buffalo Soul WHERE: Nashville, Tennessee WHY: In a city built on the shoulders of singers and songwriters, this home was originally a historic bedand-breakfast. The property recently changed hands and the new owners are renting it as an entire home. Originally built in 1937, the four-bedroom, five-bath structure features a limestone façade, Tudor architecture and multiple private spaces designed for private collaboration and creativity. Buffalo Soul is more than just a place to stay—it’s a place to create, connect and experience what gives Nashville the name “Music City.” The design pays homage to cofounder and ACMnominated recording artist JT Hodges’ parents—a Julliard-trained father and recording artist mother—who instilled his passion for music during his childhood. The home, which features a recording studio in the basement, is filled with musical touches including memorabilia, records and playlists on demand. The kitchen comes stocked with all kinds of goodies to enjoy during your stay. Artists and songwriters will enjoy a setting that gives them privacy and space to collaborate, complete with multiple creative spaces and a backyard with a oneof-a-kind, 50-foot, in-ground acoustic guitar fountain and fire pit. And as part of the Buffalo Soul experience, weekend guests have the opportunity to have in-home musical experiences with singer/songwriters curated by JT himself. HOW: buffalosoul.com

WHAT: Wilderness Lodge WHERE: Jackson Hole’s West Bank, Wyoming WHY: This modern slice of heaven sits amidst Jackson Hole’s gorgeous mountains and mature trees. Heading up the tranquil driveway, the five-bedroom home (including the two-bedroom guest house) reveals a teak exterior that blends nicely with its natural environment and huge windows to take in the views. Ideal for entertaining, the great room offers a cozy fireplace for conversation, and the sprawling dining room table seats up to 14 guests. Upstairs a large game room features a ping-pong table, refrigerator, games, and plenty of space to spread out and relax. Though beautiful on the inside, the home’s outdoor spaces are what makes this abode truly shine. Take the party outside to the ample dining area and gas grill, or savor a little après-ski under the stars in the hot tub. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is only 4.3 miles away, and Grand Teton National Park is an easy day trip. HOW: luxurypropertiesjh.com

TERRANEA AT TEN A peek into the legendary resort— one decade in the making. WRITTEN BY AMBER KLINCK

T

his year marks Terranea Resort’s 10-year anniversary. For a resort of Terranea’s caliber, however, a decade is just a single milestone on the timeline. Terranea—with its timeless architecture, mature landscape and welcoming culture— feels timeless. There’s an ageless quality to what Terranea values … an ode to the simple pleasures mastered with the highest level of excellence. There is the food, the service, the incredible surroundings, of course, but also a deep appreciation for the natural habitat that surrounds them, a sense of duty and respect for their team and community that’s embraced them, and a genuine confidence that Terranea is achieving something truly exceptional. These are just a few things that make the resort feel beyond its years. If you’ve driven along the curve of the coast leading up to Terranea, felt your stress melt away and your senses elevate, it might be hard to imagine the Palos Verdes Peninsula without the 102-acre oceanside resort. But there was a time when this stunning piece of land had a different set of occupants—even a period of vacancy—before the vision of Terranea became a reality. From the indigenous Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe and the 1542 Spanish occupation of the Peninsula by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo to the 16,000-acre private land purchase by Frank A. Vanderlip in 1913, the land has been home to seafarers, fishermen, Japanese farmers and Hollywood’s elite. In 1954 it was Marineland of the Pacific’s turn. The oceanarium— once the largest in the world—remained an attraction until closing its doors in 1987. With Marineland out of operation, the Peninsula was essentially abandoned until Lowe Enterprises took interest in 1998, breaking ground on the project in June 2007. Putting together the pieces to bring Terranea to life was a tremendous undertaking. It was a true collaboration working with the

California Coastal Commission as well as the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. Every effort was made to ensure the design of the resort was compatible with the land and that everything was sustainable. It was important that the natural habitat on the peninsula not only be preserved, but flourish. Of the resort’s 102 acres, 75% of the property is green space with 12 acres of restored native habitat. “It’s not just a part of the habitat,” Terranea’s President Terri A. Haack says. “It’s part of our story.” All of the mature trees were boxed during construction and replanted, giving the illusion that the buildings were built around the trees. During construction, Terranea had an on-site quarry providing 90,000 tons of material to build the resort. Plus 750,000 yards of earth were moved within the property; thus no land was removed. And 75% of materials from the former structures were recycled and used throughout the resort. These three measures alone saved thousands of truck trips and corresponding carbon emissions. “In the last two months there were as many as 800 workers finishing the project,” Terri notes. “We went from one employee, me, to now almost 1,300. And we have about 160 associates from that first day who are still here.” The longevity of so many initial team members speaks volumes to the internal culture of the resort. “Terranea enables people to have a life and a career,” Terri says. This translates into an environment that values life outside work and promotes internal growth. In other words, associates don’t have to choose between having a family and having a career. “My personal goal is to help further women in our industry,” Terri says, “to make sure women can have harmony in their personal lives and and a fulfilling career.” Pairing an immensely talented and passionate team with an empowering work environment is a winning combination—and one the guests can feel. “Our culture has always been one of compassion and benevolence,” explains Terranea’s chief strategy officer and executive vice president Agnelo A. Fernandes. “It’s about people— understanding who our guests are, why they’ve chosen to experience Terranea to enhance their life’s journey.” Through the introduction of Terranea Proud, an internal philosophy that ties every action back to a deeply held sense of pride, the objective is clear: “Our mission is to seek to deliver extraordinary moments.” At this 10-year milestone, the team at Terranea finds themselves filled with gratitude—toward their fellow team members, their valued guests and the community that’s embraced them. So what’s next? “I want to make sure we continue to add value to our community,” Terri says. “Through programs like Chefs to End Hunger and the resort’s continued conservation efforts, Terranea’s value to Southern California is evident.” “I also believe that we will take our place as an iconic resort; that’s what we want to be,” says Terri. “We always knew and felt strongly about this resort being the next big thing in our industry,” Agnelo adds. Resting on a stunning piece of land with breathtaking views of the Pacific, there’s no questioning the destination’s allure. But Terranea is more than just a location to its visitors. It’s become a state of mind … a feeling. Heading to Terranea evokes a sense of soulful indulgence— that’s what makes a legendary destination. It’s not so much where you go, but how you feel when you get there. For more information and to experience all that Terranea has to offer, please visit terranea.com. 100 Terranea Way, Rancho Palos Verdes. 855-416-3928

LA FURNITURE STORE HENRY VILCHIK, OWNER

4900 Triggs Street, Los Angeles | 866-397-0933 | LAFurniture.com

Tell us about your business. “LA Furniture Store sells contemporary, modern, classic Italian and transitional-style furniture from three locations in Los Angeles, one showroom in New York and an e-commerce site. The store prides itself on its high-quality, affordable luxury inventory, along with customer service and competitive pricing.”

What makes LA Furniture Store unique? “The incredibly well-designed brands we carry, our knowledgeable design associates who are intimately familiar with all 6,000 of our products—most with interior design backgrounds, and our amazing prices.”

How can you offer such an amazing selection and low prices? “What differentiates LA Furniture Store is our relationship with the brands we represent. We stock our own merchandise, so our sales team doesn’t rely on third-party stock when customers make their selections. Due to the sheer volume of orders we process, we negotiate the best prices available on the market and pass this discount on to our customers. Currently we are offering an unadvertised,

in-store-only special for our new high-end Accenti Italia collection. At this time this incredible offer is not available online or over the phone.”

What if a customer can’t find what they want in your store? “We offer an extensive special order program that includes numerous fabrics, leathers and finishes. We have recently introduced the SHOP THE LOOK feature—room ideas designed and curated by our very own staff of interior designers, helping you create impressive, decorated spaces in your home without paying the designer price.”

What special collections do you carry? “We are happy to introduce Estro Milano Italian sectionals and sofa sets. The quality of leather is impeccable. We have exclusive, Italian-made bedroom sets that are very popular—in different colors and finishes. For designs that feature laser-etched, crocodilepatterned lacquer pieces, see our Armani Xavira Casa exotic luxury collection. Our designers travel around the world, which helps ensure that we are competitive.”

ARTE FINA FURNITURE TIM ORELLO

13830 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks 818-788-2783 artefinainc@yahoo.com artefinafurniture.com

Describe the featured project. “We wanted to showcase some of our vignettes and show our custom capabilities. We offer many great looks on display in our showroom. Most of our upholstery and furniture are customizable and hand-made by some of the most talented craftsmen in the industry.”

What would you like readers to know about Arte Fina Furniture?

“We offer a showroom for clients to see items in person. We custom-make the majority of our pieces. Clients are able to choose style, finish, fabric and most important size to fit their space. We can complete most projects in a few short weeks. Many of our clients enjoy the shopping experience and the great service they get.”

“We have served the local community for more than 20 years. We specialize in custom furniture and interior design: You dream it, we can build it. We have furnished many homes in the Valley and Westside. We treat our clients like family and have built many great friendships.”

How do you go the extra mile?

Tell us about the history of your business in the Valley.

Any trends that you find particularly appealing right now?

“We started in 1995 with the opening of our showroom, bringing handcrafted goods from Mexico. Our selection and style has evolved over the years from Spanish to Tuscan, transitional and now more modern. We began to see the need for custom furniture and interior design, so we have transitioned to accommodate that.”

“I really like the modern trend and mixture of styles. Clients are so much more involved in the overall look these days and excited about home décor. Furniture has become fashion for the home—a way to showcase your creative side and decorating skills.”

What really excites you about what you do? “I enjoy it when we see how our work improves clients’ homes and lives. My team and I work closely with clients and understand what is important to each project. It is most rewarding to see everything come together and the happy look on the client’s face when we present our work.”

What is unique about what you offer clients?

“We cater to our clients and go above and beyond. Some clients ask for extra things that require more work and energy. We don’t shy away from that; we want our clients to feel special and important.”

Once a job is complete, how do you handle follow-up? “We always like to reach out and follow up with clients after completing projects. We enjoy feedback and want to make sure they are happy.”

Tell us a bit about what you do “off the job.” “I enjoy spending time with my family and working on my hobbies. I am a big do-it-yourselfer and always have a project going. I like to build and race classic cars on my free time.”

Tell us about the featured project. “This is a modern and sophisticated entertainer’s yard with several entertainment zones and a swim-up bar, designed by our award-winning in-house designer, Billy Blair.”

What sets your firm apart? “We are a design/build firm, in business for more than 30 years. No need to hire a separate landscape architect. We take into consideration the client’s lifestyle, design tastes and personal needs when designing and building each project. I handle all the field construction and supervision and am an expert in hydraulics, structural engineering and soil conditions. I won the prestigious Masters of Design award from Pool & Spa News magazine, and my work has been featured in Architectural Digest, The Los Angeles Times Magazine and Sunset magazine.”

What excites you about what you do? “I love turning people’s dreams into reality. My art is all over Southern California and will remain there long after I’m done.”

How do your homes integrate indoor/ outdoor living? “Our pools are an extension of our clients’ lifestyles, and they are works of art. All our projects are designed to integrate the backyard into the home so it is an extended area for entertainment. We integrate energysaving pumps and heaters, use solar when

necessary, and also are very conscious of the environment and recycle or repurpose building materials to leave a smaller footprint.”

What is unique about your services? “We design and build our backyards as if they were our own, using personal touches and innovations. Billy has been designing homes, pools, classic cars, boats and furniture for more than 25 years; he has a vast knowledge of materials and color palettes that work well together. We also pride ourselves in ‘value engineering,’ which means we use products and materials that look expensive but don’t break the bank.”

Tell us about the history of your firm. “We have been in business in the Valley since 1982. We have built more than 5,000 pools in Los Angeles and Ventura County. We both grew up here, have families here and are active members in the community.”

Describe your specialty. “Our specialty is hillside construction, which requires special engineering and unique design requirements. We also specialize in building pools in small yards. We consider each project a work of art, including pools, spas, masonry, retaining walls, driveways, concrete, wood pergolas, pool houses, outdoor fireplaces, BBQs and landscaping. We hold swimming pool contractor, general contractor and masonry licenses.”

What would you like our readers to know about your firm? “They should know that we have built dozens of new-construction homes with our clients since 2009, ranging in style from Mediterranean to traditional and contemporary. Our clients might build a house once in a lifetime—we build a new house every day! I love to work on new homes from the ground up, whole-house renovation, as well as bathrooms, kitchens, add-ons and conversions—from concept through installation, space design, furniture planning, window treatments and art. When we create full turnkey projects for residential and commercial clients, the process is seamless with results that reflect our clients’ well-earned success.”

Tell us about rebuilding after a disaster. “In December 2016, when a falling tree crushed my own home, we were displaced for 14 months while we rebuilt. I experienced first-hand that rebuilding after disaster could be a creative opportunity. We have been helping our clients navigate the rebuilding process after floods, mold and fire for more than 15 years. We are uniquely qualified to help our clients design their way back home after a devastating blow. We look forward to helping our neighbors rebuild their beloved homes after the Woolsey Fire.”

What really excites you about what you do? “Collaboration with our clients to make their dreams come true! And collaborating with architects, our trusted general contractors, trades, vendors and artists! On the commercial side of our business, it is thrilling to work with

start-ups and help them grow from coworking spaces into their first branded offices, as well as supporting established companies in transition to exciting new spaces that support their growth and accomplishments.”

When should clients call you? “If you are building a new house and working with an architect, include our experience and wisdom early in the planning process, before you break ground. When renovating, call us first. We can work directly with the engineers and contractors to create the plans.”

What is Jana Design Interiors’ design philosophy? “Luxury Is Personal! When we design a home for your family’s specific lifestyle and aesthetics, every day will feel like you are living in a fivestar hotel! Our kitchens, bathrooms and built-ins are most often custom. We design custom furniture pieces in all styles. With the proper design, custom can be affordable … and custom equals personal luxury.”

How has your sense of style changed over the years? “Having grown up in Boston, I easily embrace New England-style traditional homes with molding and formality. Over the years we are thrilled to have taken on a variety of styles, including the clean lines of contemporary homes and the fun of mid-century modern. We delight in the variety of tastes, interests and dreams our clients bring to us.”

Where was your headshot taken? “A favorite tile showroom, Walker Zanger!”

MIXTURES INTERIOR DESIGN MICHELE S. COHEN, ASID 818-783-8103 mixturesint@me.com mixturesinteriordesign.com

Describe the featured project.

What excites you about what you do?

“This is a contemporary home that was remodeled to reflect the client’s vision: opening up the common living space and allowing the floating fireplace to be a focal point. The challenge was to hold onto some existing larger walls to display artwork. By adding a 40-foot support beam, we were able to create the open space and still retain necessary walls. With this newly oriented area, we were able to custom design most of the furniture as well as the bar cabinetry and fireplace.”

“There are so many styles of interior design. Design is endless, so you are never limited. Each project presents itself differently according to the client and their needs. Learning the scope of the project and discovering what it takes to bring the project to fruition can be a very exciting process; you are continually creating new environments. Whether I’m remodeling, doing a new build or just decorating, I’m not only creating people’s visual dream but also designing a space that functions more naturally for their particular lifestyle. I love a challenge, and because I have designed many different styles over the years, I’m not afraid to revisit something old and make it new again—or try something brand new.”

What is unique about what you offer your clients? “A good interior designer has to first listen to their client, even if you are not envisioning what they are trying to describe to you. It’s OK. That is why they are hiring you. They need your help, input and expertise all along the way. Psychology plays a huge role too. It’s important to be able to read a client and decipher what is important to them, and what can be omitted or redirected. Because I have been a designer for more than 25 years, this is the easy part. I also custom design and build a fair amount of the furniture, which allows me to achieve exactly the right proportion and furniture piece for a specific area. I have built solid relationships with talented, reliable and expert craftspeople, such as furniture makers and cabinet builders—all locally sourced.”

What new trends are you seeing? “Interior design is like fashion. It has to be restyled and recreated after some time to make way for the next trend. It just takes a longer time in this trade! For example, the popular ‘all-white kitchen’ and the ‘midcentury modern’ styles are now being replaced with ‘70s and ‘80s looks. Mixed metals of chrome and brass, colors of greens, oranges and browns, velvet and floral patterns, and mixed-style furnishings are now becoming the new hot trends. But hey, if you still want that white kitchen, we are here for you … we just promise to spice it up!”

The Myth of the Empty Nest Why parents should stop wasting energy dreading the moment the kids move on. WRITTEN BY JANE ULMAN ILLUSTRATED BY CHRISTINE GEORGIADES

“When you leave for college, you’re outta here,” my father frequently reminded my siblings and me. We didn’t mind. We’d been waiting a lifetime to be liberated. And when my younger brother opted for early release to boarding school at age 15, they downsized to a small apartment. Ciao, childhood bedrooms. My parents were early-bird empty nesters, predating that term—which originated in 1970 or later, according to dictionary. com—by at least a year. But parents of my generation and those following are different. “Of course, you have good kids,” my mom once told me during a “discussion” about parenting. “You spend enough time with them.” In fact, we parents want to spend so much time with our almost or full-fledged adult children that empty nest has become a syndrome, (though not an official clinical diagnosis). When our kids move on, many of us experience deep sadness, loneliness and even loss of identity. But I have news for all of you millennial parents who tear up at preschool graduation thinking that one day your child will leave, and for all you Gen Xers dreading

Today’s kids boomerang back home faster than you can say, “Let’s turn that bedroom into a meditation and yoga studio with a built-in rope wall.” According to a Pew Research Center study, 15% of young adults ages 25 to 35, as of 2016, were living in their parents’ homes. After our sons graduated from college and snagged that first job and a place to live, we presented each with a severance package: a bed, five dress shirts, two pairs of slacks and a leather belt. But as soon as one of them changed jobs, opted to apply to graduate school, or was hit by a tanking economy, he was again living at home, for periods that ranged from a few weeks to a few years. We loved having them back—especially since we no longer had to drive them to soccer practice or pack school lunches. Our boys are gone now (really), but their memorabilia linger on. Our house is crowded with textbooks, yearbooks, trading cards—“Mom, they’re worth a lot of money. Don’t throw them out,” they warn—and

Legos that don’t fit in their small, Ikeafurnished apartments. Never mind that they also don’t fit in our California ranch-style house with no attic, no basement and less than enviable closet space. I tell my daughters-in-law (who both impressively cleaned out their own childhood rooms years ago) that as soon as they relocate to bigger digs, I’ll be showing up with boxes of their husband’s books, toys and childhood treasures. They smile, guardedly, knowing it’s not an idle threat. Meanwhile, my husband, Larry, and I are busy making room for a crib and other paraphernalia for visiting granddaughters. And now we’re thrilled the boys never moved out their children’s books, Beanie Babies and wooden blocks. So take note, millennial and Gen X parents: The kids come back. Followed by their kids. You just have to drop the dream of a meditation and yoga studio with a built-in rope wall. ■ Writer Jane Ulman and her husband, Larry, live in Encino where they are planning to build a storage unit with all the Legos left behind by their four grown sons.
