PRESIDENT’S LETTER
O
n behalf of California State University,
Northridge, I am pleased to welcome you to this evening’s extraordinary event fea-
turing the first appearance by world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma at Valley Performing Arts Center.
CSUN is one of California’s largest university
campuses and provides an exceptional environment
for the arts at Valley Performing Arts Center and the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communi-
cation. Thousands of guests from the surrounding
community and the campus annually benefit from
the cultural and performing arts programming in the Great Hall, the Plaza del Sol Performance Hall, the
Experimental Theatre and other theatres located in the Mike Curb College.
We greatly appreciate your generous support
of this evening’s gala as sponsors, table hosts and
attendees. I know that some of you are visiting Valley Performing Arts Center for the first time and have a
remarkable experience ahead of you. I hope tonight’s visit will be the first of many, and that we will be
welcoming you back to the Great Hall during the 2015-16 performance season.
Thank you again for playing such a major role in
this evening’s performance and for contributing to the success of our great university. Sincerely,
Dianne F. Harrison, Ph.D. President

W
elcome to this evening’s Yo-Yo Ma performance, and thank you for
supporting Valley Performing Arts
Center on this important occasion. Tonight marks the completion of my first year at VPAC and the
earliest realization of the vision for its future, as the premiere cultural arts and entertainment destina-
tion in the San Fernando Valley, at California State University, Northridge.
This evening also harkens the beginning of a new
season at VPAC. Throughout this program book, we
are announcing some of our 2015-16 performances. And throughout the auditorium tonight, you may
meet some of the artists who will bring them to life. Like tonight’s Yo-Yo Ma concert, VPAC will host
virtuosi from around the world such as violinist
Joshua Bell to humorist David Sedaris, from classical pianist Yuja Wang to jazz pianist Jason Moran, from Broadway and television star Megan Hilty to opera star and CSUN alumna Michelle DeYoung. Tonight’s many sponsors, committee members,
and supporters are virtuosi in their own right,
and you will find their names and companies featured throughout our gala program. One
special name stands out, and that is Gala Committee Chair Marla Lefton. I thank her as first amongst equals.
But there are no stars more important than the emerging ones who are students at
CSUN. And you will see plenty of them onstage and in the auditorium at VPAC in 2015-
16. When we announce the complete season later this month, we will also share a calendar of CSUN performances throughout the year taking place in our venue.
Tonight we thank all our stars – our CSUN family, donors, guests and friends – for their
loyal and generous support in benefitting Valley Performing Arts Center. Warmly,
Thor Steingraber, Executive Director Valley Performing Arts Center www.ValleyPerformingArtsCenter.org

Yo-Yo MA Cellist
Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testa-
ment to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences and to his personal desire for artistic growth and re-
newal. Whether performing new or familiar works from the cello repertoire, coming
together with colleagues for chamber music or exploring cultures and musical forms
outside the Western classical tradition, Mr.
Ma strives to find connections that stimulate the imagination.
Yo-Yo Ma maintains a balance between
his engagements as soloist with orchestras
cultures throughout the world. To that end, he
chamber music activities. He draws inspiration
as diverse as native Chinese music with its

from a wide circle of collaborators, creating programs with such artists as Emanuel Ax, Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach,
has taken time to immerse himself in subjects distinctive instruments and the music of the Kalahari bush people in Africa.
Expanding upon this interest, in 1998 Mr.
Kayhan Kalhor, Ton Koopman, Yu Long, Bobby

McFerrin, Edgar Meyer, Mark Morris, Riccardo Stott, Chris Thile, Michael Tilson Thomas, Wu Man, Wu Tong, Damian Woetzel, and David
Zinman. Each of these collaborations is fueled by the artists’ interactions, often extending
the boundaries of a particular genre. One of
Mr. Ma’s goals is the exploration of music as a means of communication and as a vehicle for the migration of ideas across a range of 14
zation that seeks to create meaningful change business. Under his artistic direction, Silkroad presents performances by the acclaimed Silk
Road Ensemble and develops new music, cultural partnerships, education programs, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. Silkroad’s
ongoing affiliation with Harvard University has made it possible to develop programs

communities. Mr. Ma and the Institute have 15
