Upholding Tradition
For almost 15 years now we have presented an annual Women’s Issue, and I continue to be impressed by the accomplished ladies included. On the following pages, there are many wonderful and inspiring stories about the builders of our community. That’s what women are, after all—builders. We build families, friendships and bridges. We build each other up and build our network with every relationship we forge.
This year we made some changes to Southbay, incorporating a wider variety of topics in each issue in place of a single theme. The exception is our fall Women’s Issue. I am so happy to continue this tradition and excited for you to see who’s featured this year.
Our editorial director, Darren Elms, leads a fantastic group of women working for Southbay magazine. I am honored to be part of the team and would like to thank them all for their dedication and enthusiasm. This year
I had the pleasure of speaking with many of our readers and advertisers, and I look forward to meeting more of you! If you see me at an event or around town, please introduce yourself. If you have an idea for our pages, I would love to hear it.
As you sit down to read this issue, I hope you can savor the last few sweet bits of warm weather and appreciate all the women who make the South Bay a great place to live, work and play.

OPEN WATER SWIMMER AND COACH CARLY MILLER FINDS
PEACE AND PURPOSE OFF THE SOUTH BAY SHORE.
Written by Scott Sanford Tobis | Photographed

Ken Pagliaro
The adage that adversity builds character might seem antiquated these days, but in the case of South Bay resident Carly Miller, it defines her. Upon meeting Carly in Hermosa Beach by The Strand (in her native habitat), it was immediately clear that she is a fighter—highly intelligent, tenacious and unwilling to accept defeat. Her legendary achievements in the Pacific may have endeared her to locals, but she’s far from the typical beach rat-turnedmarathon swimmer.
Originally from the East Coast, Carly always loved the water—the peaceful feeling that pervades her skin and the overall sense of freedom. Her time spent in pools as a young girl can be attributed to her father, an avid swimmer who taught her at a very young age to embrace the water.
Although she swam with school teams and clubs, she was keenly aware of her limitations in a fiercely competitive sport and never pursued it collegiately. And despite many years spent in pools, she had never swam in the ocean until about eight years ago.
After losing her beloved mother, Emily, to cancer, Carly endured a prophylactic double mastectomy to avoid the same fate. She struggled for several years with addiction and depression, and then one day in 2016 she made a decision. She had recently turned 40 and felt a compelling need to push herself. She wanted to regain the sense of freedom that the water had offered her when she was a young girl.
Inspired by the memory of her mother and by Chris Crutcher’s seminal sports/swimming book Stotan!, she attempted something completely new: an open water swim. Carly ventured out to the Manhattan Beach Pier that morning to meet up with a group of strangers she
had heard about online. She knew very little about what she would soon face.
Despite being a strong swimmer in chlorinated water, her first experience in the ocean proved harrowing and isolating when the group sped ahead of her. “Those triathletes basically left me to die in the ocean,” she remembers. But she didn’t let that deter her.
A chance meeting that day with a friendly and garrulous Scot named Johnnie turned into an invite to a far more supportive ocean swim group. “Honestly, I have no clue where I would be today if I hadn’t met Johnnie that day,” Carly says. “Being surrounded by an incredibly supportive group of people really helped motivate and inspire me to dream big.”
Flash-forward eight years, and Carly has become a sought-after private swim coach in addition to working as an assistant swim coach at Chapman University. She finished the California Triple Crown of open water— Anacapa Island, Catalina Channel and the length of
“When I’m in the open water is when I feel closest to my mom. The ocean helped me heal the grief and depression. Swimming in her honor and memory for a cause close to my heart gives me purpose.”
Lake Tahoe—and became the sixth person to swim the 27-mile width of Santa Monica Bay from Point Dume in Malibu to Rocky Point in Palos Verdes.
Recently she won her age group at the Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim, one of many solo swims and races. Along the way, Carly has used her marathon swim events to fundraise for the nonprofit FORCE, supporting families facing hereditary cancer. She has raised more than any other individual for the charity.
“When I’m in the open water is when I feel closest to my mom,” she shares. “The ocean helped me heal the grief and depression. Swimming in her honor and memory for a cause close to my heart gives me purpose.”
With a supportive husband on her side (quite literally sometimes, in a boat during the challenging voyages) and a group of fellow ocean swimmers and friends, Carly has managed to achieve the seemingly impossible at her age. Next up she is planning to face the notoriously difficult English Channel swim in
2026. With this accomplishment she will complete the Original Triple Crown of open water swimming—the English Channel, the Catalina Channel and 20 Bridges/ Manhattan Island—an extraordinary achievement for any athlete.
The next time you’re taking a walk along the Hermosa Pier, look at the waves crashing against the shore. Peer a little further out, and if you see a blond, muscular, tenacious figure fighting against the current to get to open water, it might be Carly. When she’s not teaching new generations of swimmers, she’s planning her next open water adventure—undaunted by the difficulty of navigating the brutal and majestic reality of the Pacific.
“I enjoy the challenge and the concept of doing something that only a few other people have ever done,” she says. “The most challenging swims are the ones that make me a better swimmer, a better human and a better coach.” ■

A LOCAL ARTIST FIGURES FRONT AND CENTER AT A NEW EXHIBITION AT THE PALOS VERDES ART CENTER.
Written by Gail Phinney
For San Pedro-based sculptor Ann Weber, one of the most powerful qualities of being a woman is having the strength and resilience to pivot and reinvent oneself. Relying on her Midwest values and taking inspiration from strong women role models along the way, the artist has done just that. In the process, Ann has crafted a fulfilling career and expansive body of work that continues to evolve, as she does.
Born in Jackson, Michigan, and raised in Indiana, Ann attributes her practical approach to life and artmaking to her Midwestern background. “We are very resourceful,” she explains. “We can make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.”
But it was a series of defining moments that set her on the path to becoming an artist, beginning with her summer of ’69 art awakening when the Butler University undergraduate visited Philadelphia and saw French sculptor Auguste Rodin’s monumental masterworks. “Those never left me,” she recalls.
A summer job with an interior designer in her hometown of Evansville ignited her entrepreneurial spirit. “She was the only woman I’d ever known who had her own business, her own spending money,” Ann says. She was briefly determined to follow that career path, but there was no such course of study at Butler. So she

transferred to Purdue University.
Ultimately the coursework didn’t appeal, but she found something else that did. She started taking pottery classes.
“I fell in love twice,” she says. “I fell in love with the medium of clay. I decided I wanted to make functional pottery. I also fell in love with the guy sitting next to me on the potter’s wheel, and that’s what he wanted to do. That was a Eureka moment.”
Thus began her life as a production potter that ultimately took her to Manhattan, where the artist sold wholesale pottery, had her picture taken by legendary photographer Bill Cunningham and was featured in The New York Times
“But there was another drumbeat in the background,” the artist reflects. “It was the end of the hippie movement, the decline in crafts, an emphasis on Pottery Barn, and a lot of the potters were getting burnout.”
Ann was encouraged to go to graduate school on the West Coast, where a growing number of artists were using clay as a medium. She moved to the Bay area to study with Viola Frey at California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts)—who proved to be a valuable mentor.
At the age of 35, with no formal art training, Ann found herself in introductory art classes with 18-yearolds. Viola intuitively knew she needed to bridge that gap and suggested that Ann explore the abstract work of Joan Miró and Wassily Kandinsky. Drawn to the shapes in the paintings, she resolved to throw them on the potter’s wheel.
“That was another Eureka moment,” Ann recalls, “because that took me from functional to abstraction.”
Viola told her students that they were beginning artists for the first 10 years. That gave Ann license to experiment with a variety of materials. Inspired by architect Frank Gehry’s cardboard furniture, she decided to turn the corrugated cardboard packing boxes in her Oakland studio into sculpture. Using a plier stapler to assemble cut strips of cardboard, she began building monochromatic, anthropomorphic forms that harkened back to Rodin’s sculptures.
“NO MATTER HOW BAD THINGS ARE, THERE IS ALWAYS BEAUTY, JOY AND WONDER.”
“That was 1991,” she shares. “I’ve found infinite possibilities since then.”
In 2015, at the age of 65, she pivoted once again and made the move down the coast. She settled in San Pedro, where she maintains a studio at Angels Gate Cultural Center. Ann believes it takes a modicum of luck and a lot of hard work to make your way in the art world—no matter your gender.
“It’s an easy thing to hang not being as successful as you want to be on the fact that you’re a woman, but I don’t think it makes any difference,” she points out. “There are plenty of disenfranchised men who have never been as successful as they wanted to be. It’s just a fact in this business.”
Ann Weber: Let the Sunshine In, her current exhibition at the Palos Verdes Art Center, reflects yet another evolution for Ann. The show includes new standing and wall sculptures in bold color choices, created from strips of colored cardboard boxes imprinted with logos and text. The work serves as a symbol of the artist’s resilient joie de vivre and radical optimism in the face of our turbulent times.
As she says, “No matter how bad things are, there is always beauty, joy and wonder.”

MATERNITY CARE THAT EMPOWERS NEW PARENTS
Real-life new moms talk about the special kind of care that makes having a baby at Providence Little Company of Mary a unique experience.
WRITTEN BY ANNE M. RUSSELL | PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O’DONNELL
Welcoming a baby into the world is one of life’s greatest experiences. Providence Little Company of Mary offers award-winning maternity care—partnering with parents to ensure a happy, confident pregnancy and delivery. Here, three moms talk about what makes having a baby at Providence Little Company of Mary unforgettable.
NELL SEEKS EMOTIONAL SUPPORT
Nell Finigan is determined to have a happier birth experience this time around.
When her first child, Hazel, was born on March 18, 2020, it was the day that COVID-19 quarantine protocols went into place. The Torrance resident found herself isolated and lonely in the Los Angeles area hospital where she had delivered. She wasn’t permitted visitors except her husband, Dan, who wasn’t allowed to leave.
“I felt unprepared and overwhelmed,” Nell recalls. “This time, I want someone who can coach me through and work well with the medical team.”
Nell has chosen Providence Little Company of Mary for her delivery, and
“YOU DESERVE TO BE TREATED WITH LOVE AND NURTURING.”
her “coach” will be veteran doula Monique Cowan from the hospital’s doula program. Monique began her training after getting invaluable support from a doula during the birth of her own daughter.
Monique says she likes to start working with moms-to-be around the 30-week mark. She provides four visits pre-birth and four after, as well as being present to support the mother during delivery. She says that half of her clients are first-time mothers and half are women who have had some kind of negative experience and want to do better the next time, like Nell.
“I help clients hope for the best, not prepare for the worst,” says Monique. “You deserve to be treated with love and nurturing.”
Rená Koerner, the OB care coordinator at Providence Little Company of Mary, says
that she’s seen an increased demand for both midwife and doula services. “We see about three births per week with midwives and five to seven requests per week for doulas,” Rená says. “Families are more educated now about what they want from the birth experience.”
AMANDA WITNESSED MIRACLES
Most mothers-to-be consider carefully where they’ll go for maternity care the way Nell did, but Amanda Choi didn’t have that luxury. After a stressful day of moving their household to Torrance, Amanda awoke her husband Eugene at midnight, saying, “Take me to the ER at Little Company of Mary!”
She could tell something wasn’t right with the baby she’d already fought so hard to conceive via IVF treatment. Against all odds, the fetus had survived what had appeared to be a miscarriage at the sixweek mark. Now, at 24 weeks, pain was telling Amanda something was very wrong.
Amanda and Eugene rushed to the ER, where they were taken to the Providence Little Company of Mary maternity unit. “I was so scared, I couldn’t stop shaking,” Amanda recalls. “The two nurses who saw me were the sweetest angels ever and held my hand.”
Unfortunately, the amniotic sac around the baby was breaking, and after Amanda spent three days on bed rest, baby Hazel was born 16 weeks on August 20, 2023. At 24 weeks, she weighed a scant 1 pound, 6 ounces—a micro-preemie.
The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Providence Little Company of Mary is a Level III, 34-bed, state-of-the-art facility. Staffed around the clock by neonatologists, neonatal nurses, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, case managers and social workers, the NICU delivers high-level care for fragile newborns.
At birth, Hazel was rushed there and would ultimately spend 124 days under the care of neonatal and perinatal pediatricians Joanna Bisquera-Cacpal, MD, Shama Ambe, MD, and Jon Yamato, MD. While Hazel clung to life in the NICU, Amanda was fighting for her own survival, having hemorrhaged during delivery and requiring multiple transfusions. Ultimately she was left unable to bear children again and thus treasures Hazel all the more.
“We’re so lucky to have her,” Amanda says. “It was a full-blown miracle. The universe has bigger plans for us than we can realize in the moment.”
ROXANNA CHOSE HER OWN WAY
Like Nell, Roxanna Iran knew she wanted her next birth experience to be different. Her first two children, 5-year-old Elena and 3-year-old Celina, had been delivered by C-section—the first one an emergency procedure and the second one scheduled.
But this time Roxanna was determined to follow her own birth plan: The Manhattan Beach resident wanted a vaginal birth, called a VBAC (vaginal birth after C-section). To find a maternity care team that would respect her goal, she switched to Providence Little Company of Mary.
“I was looking for a provider who would work with me on a vaginal birth after two C-sections,” Roxanna says. “Julie Oates is known among the moms of the South Bay as
“THE TWO NURSES WHO SAW ME WERE THE SWEETEST ANGELS EVER AND HELD MY HAND.”
Amanda Choi and her husband, Eugene, celebrate Hazel’s 1st birthday.

the go-to for that. I wanted one-on-one care.”
As a certified nurse-midwife practicing at Providence Little Company of Mary, Julie says she “establishes a strong relationship of trust” with clients whose babies she’ll catch. Each prenatal visit is a full 30 minutes, so Julie and the mother-to-be discuss every step of the process and what the challenges might be.
In Roxanna’s case, it turned out to be a very long labor—24 hours—and Julie was with her the entire time. “It was effectively Roxanna’s first baby,” Julie explains. “And that takes a long time.”
Julie practices in conjunction with OB-GYN Donna Richey, MD, so if Roxanna had required a surgical intervention, Dr. Richey would have helped. But as it was, the birth of Roxanna’s son, Julian, now 9 months old, went smoothly and she has nothing but good memories.
“Julie was so supportive about everything,” Roxanna says. “I felt so grateful.”

Providence Little Company of Mary is the only hospital in the South Bay to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report in 2023 and 2024 as “Best Hospital for Maternity Care.” Singled out as a “High Performing” facility, Little Company of Mary earned the distinction for its quality of care, including fewer complications in newborns and lower C-section rates than other hospitals. It was also singled out as a “Best Maternity Hospital” by Newsweek this year.

WITH OVER TWO DECADES IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, MANHATTAN BEACH POLICE CHIEF RACHEL JOHNSON BRINGS A DISTINCTIVE BLEND OF EQUANIMITY, EMPATHY AND DISARMING HUMOR TO HER JOB.
Written by Michele Garber | Photographed by Monica Orozco
Rachel Johnson’s path from her youth in Texas to becoming the Manhattan Beach chief of police is a classic American success story. Throughout her 23 years in law enforcement, she gained experience, honed her craft, paid her dues and steadily rose through the ranks. For the past two years she’s been an unflappable guiding force in the Manhattan Beach Police Department, applying her talent and experience to enhance the safety and quality of life in the city.
Raised primarily by her mother in and around Houston, Rachel credits her success to her strict upbringing, her mom’s high expectations of her and the example her mother set successfully advancing her own career in public service. “I always wanted a job where I could make a difference. Law enforcement seemed like that kind of field,” she shares. “I was fascinated by stories of grit—putting in effort to achieve results. That’s what you need in law enforcement.”
Rachel spent her freshman and sophomore years studying at Houston’s High School for Law and Justice before her family moved her junior year. After high school, she briefly attended Houston Community College. “I decided I wasn’t mature enough to be in college yet, but I had to figure out what to do instead,” she explains.
So Rachel enlisted in the Marine Corps. “I’d always admired the military. My grandfather served in the Korean War. It sounded like a good way to figure out my life.”
She signed a four-year contract and hoped to be assigned to the military police, but at 5’3” she was two inches too short. Instead she became an air control electronics operator, and after three months of job
training in Twentynine Palms, California, she was stationed for a year in Okinawa, Japan, and three years at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
“As a young person it was so much fun, but I realized that all that traveling could not continue,” she explains. “I didn’t want to spend my life living out of a suitcase. So I started thinking about my exit plan.”
Rachel joined the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, went through the academy and was assigned to the maximum security jail. “Being in the jail, I learned to talk to people. Your stock and trade are being able to communicate,” she says. “You learn that everybody has a story.”
Rachel moved on to the Newport Beach Police Department, where she was promoted to sergeant in 2012 and lieutenant in 2017. She also decided to complete her education and earned her associate’s degree in liberal arts, Bachelor of Science in management, and master’s degree in the administration of justice and security.
In February 2020 Rachel joined the Laguna Beach Police Department as captain, just six weeks before the world shut down. Although typically fire departments handle pandemics, the city manager asked Rachel to be the “COVID czar.” She was enthusiastic but had no public health experience and was new on the job. “I didn’t even know where they kept the pens,” she laughs.
For the next 18 months she was the city’s sole point of contact for the pandemic. “It was A Tale of Two Cities—the best of times, the worst of times,” she says. “We had a crash course in meeting virtually and dealing with constantly changing ordinances. And my direct desk line was listed on all literature. It was chaos.”
“I ALWAYS WANTED A JOB WHERE I COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE. LAW ENFORCEMENT SEEMED LIKE THAT KIND OF FIELD. I WAS FASCINATED BY STORIES OF GRIT—PUTTING IN EFFORT TO ACHIEVE RESULTS. THAT’S WHAT YOU NEED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT.”
In February 2022 she began interviewing for the Manhattan Beach police chief position. The process took about six months, and on August 8 she was sworn in as the city’s first woman of color to serve as chief, overseeing 120 full-time employees including 72 police officers.
“In a city like Manhattan Beach, we have a low violent crime rate—mostly perpetuated by people who know each other. Property crimes make up 88% of our crimes. So a lot of our resident concerns are with quality of life, not with crime,” explains Rachel. “Incidents like last year’s robbery at a local jewelry store are the exception rather than the rule. But that means the emphasis must be placed on other things.”
Beyond her duties as a police chief, Rachel runs half marathons because, as she puts it, “I have the palate of a toddler. I’m just trying to outrun a bad diet.”
And then there is her most important role: Rachel is mom to two boys and a girl, all teenagers. When asked if they’re proud of her achievements, she laughs and adds, “They’re not impressed by me. When they were young, they’d visit me because of the police cars. But now I’m just a dorky parent. I encourage them to think and have grit. They understand that my job is important, but I don’t think they fully grasp it because it’s me.” ■

FOR THE DIVERSE AND DEDICATED GROUP THAT CALLS ITSELF THE PV BIKE CHICKS, A RIDE PROMISES MORE THAN FITNESS. IT FOSTERS COMMUNITY.
Written by Quinn Roberts | Photographed by Shane O’Donnell
It’s Saturday morning at Malaga Cove Plaza in Palos Verdes Estates, and the fog is beginning to lift as the PV Bike Chicks get ready to ride. Currently the group has about 80 active members, and a solid 20 of them ride three to four times a week. Since the group started, some women have even come from Colorado and Florida to ride.
The PV Bike Chicks is comprised of women of various ages—20s to 80s—and abilities. The routes range from the beach to steeper climbs.
“It’s so unique here—I feel like I am in Europe,” says program director Carolyn Maynard. “You can take pictures and just enjoy the overall landscape. However, it is a challenge, and we have a rule where no rider is left behind.”
The group rides about 30 different routes. The Lunada Bay Loop is the easiest beginner’s route at 7.4 miles with a 419-foot ascent. The longest is Mandeville Canyon, a 55.2-mile ride. The PV Bike Chicks usually complete more than 50 rides a week, which equates to over 1,000 miles and 100 hours on the bikes.
One of the more unique and fun rides is the Strava Art route, which looks like the shape of a unicorn when completed. Another route is specifically dedicated to lighthouses, including riding past mailboxes with a lighthouse design.
The group started simply enough. In the spring of 2010, Kim Trimpert was working at the PV Bicycle Center in Rolling Hills Estates and began meeting women at the shop who were purchasing bike gear for their husbands. When asked if they rode, some said they did occasionally with their husbands but not as often as they might like because they did not want to go alone.
Plenty of things can happen during a solo ride. You can get a flat tire, or a chain can come off. So hearing that story enough, Kim started collecting names and email addresses to put together a roster of women to ride together. Since their first meeting, with about a
dozen women in attendance, around 200 women from the South Bay and other parts of Southern California have at some point been a part of the club.
“We support each other so much, something I didn’t expect when I first joined,” says Carolyn, who’s been with the group from the beginning. “We’ve been there for each other through breast cancer, the death of family members and so much more. It doesn’t stop at the end of every bike ride.”
The riders aren’t there for just each other but also for local charities. A few times the group has helped support families in need during the holiday season through the Salvation Army.
One of the other unique things about the PV Bike Chicks is that, in addition to learning from each other and becoming friends, the group also holds free bike maintenance clinics regularly where riders can learn how to change a flat tire, what to carry while they ride and basic bike maintenance.
Recently one of the women got a flat rear tire during a group ride. The second it happened, a handful of women stopped to help. It once again showed that no
rider would be left behind.
The group has three women in their 80s, showing that age is just a number. One of those is Marcia Watanabe, who is age 81 and has been riding with the PV Bike Chicks for seven years. She loves to set goals and knows this group is the perfect outlet for her both mentally and physically.
“It is an extraordinary and diverse group of women. It doesn’t matter your age, race, religion or background. That all goes out of our heads the second our foot hits the pedal,” says Marcia, whose love for riding partly has to do with her love for the outdoors.
She could have easily given up riding as she got older and after having hip and knee surgeries. However, she’s still been able to go on the more intense rides thanks to a pedal-assist bike. While she isn’t sure when she will stop riding with the PV Bike Chicks, Marcia does know she will have friends for life.
“The friendship and camaraderie doesn’t happen just while we are riding together, and that’s what makes it so great,” she says. “The theme of the women in this group is all about support and never giving up.” ■
BLAZING THE TRAIL FOR WOMEN
Since the early 20th century, Chevron El Segundo has pioneered progress in the energy industry and the South Bay community.
The Chevron El Segundo culture is deeply rooted in a vision to foster a diverse and inclusive work environment where employees can reach their full potential. The refinery’s unique and diverse workforce brings together a variety of backgrounds, experiences and talents, helping engage and empower employees to be the best they can be every day.
Chevron has long been recognized as a leader in the energy industry for its innovation, ingenuity and determination. Chevron El Segundo’s talented women—rig workers, environmental specialists, operators, engineers and executives—exemplify these qualities. In fact, the Women in Operations & Maintenance roles at the refinery have been making industry-leading contributions for many years.
During World War II women broke new ground, playing increasingly important roles in offices, laboratories, refineries, service stations and even oil fields. Like today, hundreds of women were essential in maintaining the refinery’s operations. Not only did these women keep the refinery operating and ensure that it provided significant aviation fuel to support the war, but they also provided for their families and helped build the South Bay community.
This legacy of commitment that began in the early 1900s continues and is even stronger today. By fostering and promoting a sense of community and belonging within its employees, Chevron El Segundo aims to improve lives, create opportunity and enable human progress.

PALOS VERDES ACTOR, TEACHER AND VOLUNTEER JENN ROBBINS SHARES HER PASSION FOR THE THEATRE WITH SOME UNEXPECTED PLAYERS.
Written by Scott Sanford Tobis | Photographed by Adelaide Brannan & Peter Merts
The notion that a person shouldn’t judge a book by its cover has never been more accurate than when describing Jenn Robbins. If one was standing behind her in line at the Yellow Vase Cafe or in a PTA meeting or perhaps even at LAX about to board a flight to Sacramento, they would never figure out her destination based on appearance alone.
If one surmised that Jenn is an actor, they would be correct—although it’s hard to throw a stick in Los Angeles without hitting one. To be more accurate, this professional actor-writer-creative producer-teaching artist has collaborated with Rogue Machine Theatre and Skylight Theatre Company, as well as performed in her own play, The Smoking Boy, at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. However, if one predicted she was next headed for an audition, they’d be wrong.
For the past five years, Jenn has flown to Sacramento, rented a car and driven to Folsom Prison to perform works of William Shakespeare with incarcerated individuals (the preferred term for inmates). It’s all part of Shakespeare for Social Justice, a long-established and wonderful rehabilitative program run by Alejandra Wahl through Marin Shakespeare Company.
When Jenn first decided to volunteer, her family reacted as one might expect—with a mix of slight trepidation and full-throated emotional support. The wife and mother of three would be entering a maximum security prison and signing a waiver that she understood she might become a hostage in the event of a riot. They understood her passion far too well to question her decision.
Not that Jenn didn’t feel more than a tinge of nervousness the moment she entered the gates of Folsom, but she knew that she was providing an important
service for members of the prison population. In other words, her fellow humans. And humane is definitely the operative word that comes to mind when describing her.
“As a way to teach empathy, theatre training is inimitable, and it is transformative in prison,” Jenn explains. “Incarcerated actors are able to climb into
“AS A WAY TO TEACH EMPATHY, THEATRE TRAINING IS INIMITABLE, AND IT IS TRANSFORMATIVE IN PRISON . INCARCERATED ACTORS ARE ABLE TO CLIMB INTO SHAKESPEARE’S COMPLEX AND HEIGHTENED STORIES AND BREATHE LIFE INTO THEIR ROLES.”
“THEATRE IS A POWERFUL AND HEALING ART FORM. I ENCOURAGE ALL ARTISTS TO KEEP QUESTIONING, CREATING AND CONNECTING. THE WORLD NEEDS YOU.”
Shakespeare’s complex and heightened stories and breathe life into their roles. They ask themselves how they feel the same as their characters and how they might feel different: Why did Macbeth commit murder? Why does Lady Macbeth scheme with him to do this, and then right afterward become so completely stricken with guilt? Shakespeare gives them the opportunity to explore their own life choices and play out roles on stage that, in life, they yearn for: uncle, brother, father, friend.”
Modest in nature, Jenn downplays her work at the prison and instead delves into how much she’s learned from the experience. Whether it’s advising someone facing an appeals board on how to shed the hardened shell they are forced to display on “the yard” or encouraging them to find a way to connect with the
universality in the Shakespeare character they’re portraying, Jenn’s passion is evident. She glows describing her experience teaching the incarcerated cast about psychophysical acting along with observing the growth she has witnessed in person.
Since she started volunteering as a teaching artist with Marin Shakes, Jenn also found time to earn her MFA in performance pedagogy, become an adjunct professor at AMDA College of the Performing Arts and, most recently, Loyola Marymount University, and join Theatre 40’s ensemble cast—nominated for an NAACP Theatre Award for Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
“Theatre is a powerful and healing art form,” she says. “I encourage all artists to keep questioning, creating and connecting. The world needs you.” ■
FOREVER YOUNG
Marcus Medical emphasizes wellness and authenticity in its approach to beauty.
WRITTEN BY LAURA L. WATTS | PHOTOGRAPHED BY FABIEN & LAURA CASTRO
Los Angeles is known to be a hotbed for beautiful people and the professionals who help them achieve their elevated aesthetic standards. But residents of the South Bay not only want a youthful appearance, they also insist on looking natural and embracing each individual’s uniqueness. Keith Marcus, MD, and his team at Marcus Medical are focused on helping locals put their best face forward.
With locations in Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach, Marcus Medical is home to doctors, nurses, physician assistants and aestheticians who offer several stages of beauty support for the face—including spa services, laser treatments, injectables, and cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Dr. Marcus has built a reputation for excellence in facial plastic surgery and aesthetics for the past 17 years, and his team has helped him create offices that are comfortable, warm and welcoming.
Giriraj Sharma, MD, recently joined the team, bringing with him years of experience in a range of cutting-edge surgical and nonsurgical treatments. We spoke with both doctors about their work in the aesthetics field and why Marcus Medical is the go-to choice for cosmetic care in Southern California.
DR. MARCUS, TELL US ABOUT THE EARLY DAYS OF MARCUS MEDICAL.
KM: Marcus Medical debuted its Redondo
Beach location in 2007. Starting a small business is challenging enough, but opening during the nadir of a recession was especially difficult. The climate for spending discretionary income on aesthetic procedures was tight, and likewise the willingness to switch to a new aesthetic physician was met with hesitation. I accepted this challenge by working seven days per week for the first two years of practice.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO DEMONSTRATE SUCH TENACITY?
KM: I knew that if we could offer highquality care with seamless access, I could grow the practice and develop a foothold within the community. Today we pride ourselves on the same high standards and impeccable quality of health care as we did on Day 1. Marcus Medical is built on approachability, and you will feel welcomed from the minute you walk in the door. There is no stuffiness, no sterility and absolutely no judgment.
DR. SHARMA, TELL US WHAT POTENTIAL PATIENTS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT MARCUS MEDICAL.
GS: I understand that undergoing cosmetic surgery is a very personal decision that is based on a lot of thought and courage. Hence, it is critical for patients to feel the right fit with their surgeon and vice versa. I want our potential patients to know that
“WE TREAT OUR PATIENTS WITH AN ELEGANT RESTRAINT THAT LEAVES THEM LOOKING REFRESHED— NOT REDONE.”
their relationship with our practice starts from the moment they reach out to us to schedule their first consultation. Our team will be with you every step of the way—prior to, during and after your treatment. Our patients are like our family. We understand and appreciate the journey you are on, and we are always here to support you.
DR. MARCUS, WHY DID YOU INVITE DR. SHARMA TO JOIN YOUR TEAM?
KM: Dr. Sharma’s interdisciplinary approach and goal of maintaining patients’ natural appearance reflect the future of aesthetic medicine. His dedication to delivering long-lasting, natural results makes us confident he is the best fit for our team and, most importantly, our patients.
“WE UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE THE JOURNEY YOU ARE ON, AND WE ARE ALWAYS HERE TO SUPPORT YOU.”
DR. SHARMA, HOW DID YOU CHOOSE TO WORK IN THIS FIELD?
GS: For me, it was the perfect combination of art, science and cutting-edge medicine. I also felt I had an aptitude for understanding aesthetics patients as individuals and relating to them. I found it to be exciting and a very natural fit.
I spent one year at the University of Toronto completing a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. In addition to honing my skills in the most advanced facial plastic surgery techniques, I developed an acute understanding of and appreciation for the facial plastic surgeon’s relationship with their patients. My fellowship laid out a blueprint for my career, in
terms of standards of care, compassion for my patients and how I envisioned my future practice.
HOW IS THE AESTHETICS INDUSTRY—AND SPECIFICALLY MARCUS MEDICAL—HELPING PEOPLE LOOK THEIR BEST?
KM: The aesthetics industry is changing rapidly. Regenerative medicine is at the forefront of many new treatments and procedures. Patients today are more interested in a natural look and a healthy lifestyle— especially here in the South Bay. There is a lot of new data showing things we can do to promote longevity and reverse decades of negative environmental effects.
At Marcus Medical, people will not walk out of our door looking like Beverly Hills or Newport Beach. We treat our patients with an elegant restraint that leaves them looking refreshed—not redone. I always preach, “If others can identify that you’ve had something done, it hasn’t been done well!”

JUST A COUPLE OF HOURS FROM THE SOUTH BAY, THIS SPA AND WELLNESS RETREAT WILL TRANSPORT YOU TO PASTORAL PROVENCE.
Written by Darren Elms
I still remember the first time I visited Cal-a-Vie Health Spa, just north of San Diego in Vista. How did I pass through Orange County and somehow end up in rural France? Hills soaked in purple lavender … the scent of orange blossoms at every turn … rooms filled with old-world antiques. It’s as if I traveled 5,000 miles, sans jet lag.
But that’s exactly what a visit to this bucolic retreat feels like—a transportive experience for all the senses. The pure beauty of the property, with historic structures, fountains and colorful gardens, would be enough to instantly reset your mood for the experience to come. But once you pepper in the fitness, spa, programs and delightful cuisine, the bliss is sure to linger long after.
Cal-a-Vie debuted four decades ago when owners Terri and John Havens created a retreat that matched their passions for antiques, French travel and a healthy lifestyle. The couple keep a home overlooking the spa grounds and often blend in among the small group of visitors who reserve a three-, four- or seven-night stay. Each package includes meals, treatments at the
award-winning spa and access to an evolving menu of fitness classes.
A typical day at Cal-a-Vie starts with a hike or walk, depending on how ambitious you desire your morning to be. And while I think of myself as being in pretty good shape, it’s humbling to watch a pack of octogenarians breeze by while ascending a summit. Cal-a-Vie enjoys a loyal—and reliably fit—clientele. But do not fear if you’re more comfortable in the back of the pack. Plenty of us just took our sweet time, absorbing the morning air and scenery at our leisure.
After a healthy breakfast (more on the dining in a bit), it’s time to sweat some more. Each day you’ll receive a list of classes and activities to choose from.
Upon arrival at the resort, your advisor in the scheduling office will take some time to review the fitness journey that best matches your goals and expectations.
This could include yoga or breathing classes, TRX, spinning, boxing and Pilates, to name a few. If you’re more of a water animal, the aquatics offerings at one of the two swimming pools will satisfy your H2O
hankerings. For those seeking soul rejuvenation, sound baths and meditation put mindfulness front and center. Mellow activities like chakra bracelet-making or helpful lectures about gut health and nutrition also help break up the day.
Perhaps the best place to chill out is the spa bath house. By the afternoon, many guests will wander in wearing their robes for a treatment, from soothing massages to nourishing facials and body treatments. There’s really no bad choice here. Just be sure to take a dip in the cold plunge just outside the spa lobby for the full experience. New activities are on the horizon with the addition of a magnesium pool and infrared sauna next year.
Another place to connect with fellow guests is at meals. When good weather permits, which is often, diners enjoy breakfast and lunch on the patio. Each meal is served with different place settings and linens each day, and guests are encouraged to mix it up and join different tables at each sitting.
The meals are not only beautifully prepared and presented but also quite delicious. A true farm-totable experience, most of the ingredients you’ll enjoy come from local suppliers and are hand-selected by the culinary team.
L’Orangerie hosts a cooking demonstration where you can learn firsthand some of the secrets behind the chef’s most popular recipes. And if you’re lucky, you may get to sample one of Cal-a-Vie’s signature wines at your candlelit dinner.
On this last trip, we had the pleasure of visiting the Sky Observatory, featuring eight flat-screen TVs and a state-of-the-art Takahashi telescope, allowing guests to peer deep into the cosmos with the help of our guest presenter. We also got a view of things to come at Cala-Vie as it celebrates 40 years in 2025—including three new villas for small-group travelers and a new Chateau Cal-a-Vie tasting room debuting in 2026.
As the resort continues to evolve and grow, so do the lucky guests who spend time in this little piece of Provence. See for yourself what a week in the country can do for your body and soul. No passport required. ■
GETTING IT JUST RIGHT
A LOCAL INTERIOR DESIGNER TAKES CREATIVE CONTROL OF COLOR, PATTERN AND WHIMSY WHILE WEAVING IN PERSONAL TOUCHES FOR A FAMILY IN MANHATTAN BEACH.

Taylor & Public 311 Design
Lauren Meichtry, principal designer of Elsie Home, met and became fast friends with Erin Vancura seven years ago while taking a boxing class at Equinox Palos Verdes. They soon discovered their connection was even stronger—their daughters were in the same ballet class. A few years later, Erin and her husband, Mike, and their two daughters moved to Manhattan Beach, and Lauren and her family coincidentally also moved there.
“After 10 years of living in Palos Verdes, we were looking for a change,” explains Erin. “On a whim, we began renting in the Tree Section, and we found everything we were looking for: great community and neighbors, walkability and a laid-back beach lifestyle.”
So when the opportunity arose to purchase a
“WHAT WAS A COMPLETELY EMPTY HOUSE JUST DAYS PRIOR WAS SUDDENLY OUR HOME.”
new-construction home by Thomas James Homes, Mike and Erin decided to take the chance. Meanwhile Lauren, who had spent the previous several years designing bespoke pillows, segued into interior design in 2021. Though she had recently completed a kitchen remodel for a close friend, she had yet to complete an entire project.
“I always knew Lauren had incredible style and taste, so when we moved, I asked her to help with ‘a few details,’” says Erin, who had previously selected the lighting and fixtures for the house with Danni Murray, lead interior designer at Thomas James Homes. “Those ‘few details’ turned into Lauren designing from top to bottom. It was the best decision we could’ve made. She has an effortless style that was the perfect match for us.”
While the Vancuras gave Lauren free rein on the overall design for the five-bedroom, four-bath home, they conveyed a list of must-haves including a sauna for Mike; an outdoor living area for morning coffee and family barbecues; a craft room for Erin and the girls; a media room for video game sessions and sleepovers with friends; and the integration of two existing pieces of furniture: a woven leather bed for the primary bedroom and a Cloud sofa from RH for the living room.
“I hadn’t done a project of this size for full-home furnishings, but I said, ‘yes’ because I knew I could do it,” recalls Lauren. “I think that’s why this was so fun, because I wasn’t designing for someone to try to appease them. It was more like, ‘OK, you trust me. I will create what I think makes the most sense for this house and the people that live in it.’ It made the process much more organic.”
The design—which Lauren calls “California cool” with hints of white oak and black—was also a celebration, in part, of a new beginning. “In my early 30s I was diagnosed with cancer, and it was a battle for all of us,” explains Erin. “Our journey has a very happy ending, and we learned a lot. We gained a new attitude and perspective on life, and a ‘let’s do it!’ approach toward adventures and new things. I think we brought a little bit of that fun, playful side into the house.”
With the help of general contractor Jorge Pasten of 360 Painting, Lauren addressed all their needs
while infusing character into the approximately 3,000-square-foot residence through bold patterns and texture in artwork, accessories, fabric and wallpaper. “We knew design details like wallpaper were going to be what brought the space together,” says Erin. “With such a blank canvas, the wallpaper allowed us to make each room different.”
In the craft room, intended as a creative lab for handcrafted greeting cards, slime projects and hot glue gun creations, Lauren selected an eye-catching, black-and-white Dashes Stacked wallpaper by Love vs. Design, wooden Brighton mirrors by Jamie Young and a pair of Isador executive desks by Four Hands.
“We envisioned a room with enough desk space to do homework but also a place to paint and mix slime,” explains Erin. “The room has also been home base for a lot of friendship bracelet-making. Thank you, Taylor Swift!”
Whimsical hints continue in the girls’ bedrooms with a nod to their interests and traits. The youngest daughter’s colorful, rainbow-themed bedroom is appointed with a hanging rattan chair by Serena & Lily, an Arches bed by Sarah Sherman Samuel and a macramé wall hanging found on Amazon. The older daughter’s room is awash with wall-to-wall Patterned Fronds wallpaper by Love vs. Design in a custom sage green colorway, Finn two-drawer nightstands from Crate & Kids, and a hand-knotted Acoma rug from Lulu and Georgia.
For the sophisticated and tranquil primary suite in soft caramel and blue-grey tones, Lauren anchored the space with their existing bed, pillows by Elsie Home and Beach Near Etretat, a landscape print from Celadon Art. “They said they never had a ‘real’ bedroom, and it was like an afterthought at every house they had ever lived in,” says Lauren. “So it was important for me to make this room feel like an oasis for them.”
In the living room, replete with a pair of custom Allie swivel chairs by Rowe Furniture, Lauren chose a triptych, Diver Triple, from Trowbridge Gallery in London as a wink to Erin’s journey. It was also intended to complement the fireplace surround clad in Stella Hex by Merola Tile, a black-and-white star pattern that Erin chose before Lauren was enlisted.
“The tile sets the tone for the room,” says Lauren. “When I saw these diver prints, I knew I wanted to use them here. I see this strong woman jumping and diving off, and for me there was some symbolism of Erin.”
The Vancuras count the final reveal as one of the most gratifying and memorable moments of the entire process. “What was a completely empty house just days prior was suddenly our home,” recounts Erin. “Lauren and her team worked hard to set up the house, from fresh flowers and sheets to all the furniture and artwork. It was a moment we will never, ever forget. To this day, we haven’t changed a single thing about the home, and everything is where Lauren left it.”
For her first official project, Lauren couldn’t be more fulfilled. “The moment they walked in, they kept saying, ‘This feels like us,’ and ‘You nailed it,’” she says. “Doing this house and feeling like I had full creative control while capturing their personality, I felt like: ‘I did it.’” ■

PASSION & PERSEVERANCE
The RockIt Body Pilates team wants to help you achieve the best version of you.
WRITTEN BY LAURA L. WATTS | PHOTOGRAPHED BY FABIEN & LAURA CASTRO, JAY L. CLENDENIN
Kaci Bacher may not have all the answers, but she certainly knows how to figure it out. From fulfilling her dream of purchasing RockIt Body Pilates to enduring a global pandemic shutdown and recently achieving her longtime goal of creating the studio’s own reformers, Kaci has learned how to persevere when life presents challenges.
What makes RockIt Body’s workout a cut above the rest is its fusion approach that combines classical Pilates with cardio and strength training—leaving clients with a well-balanced workout. Even more significant is the sense of community that is prevalent at RockIt Body.
“Our studio is more than a place to work out,” Kaci proudly points out. “It is also a close-knit community that celebrates momentous victories and supports each other through adversity and challenges.”
DREAM BIG
Kaci’s passion for this place and these people is evident. Even before she bought the business in 2019, she had a vision of what it could be. She implemented that vision just in time to start brainstorming workarounds for the COVID-19 shutdowns that would last two years.
“There were many times I shared my plans with others only to be looked at like I was crazy—they didn’t see what I did. They
questioned how I was going to do it,” Kaci shares. “My answer was always the same, ‘I don’t know, but I’ll figure it out!’”
And now that the studio has reopened for good, Kaci is excited to prove once again that patience pays off. More than eight years ago, she began the necessary work to make another dream come true: creating a proprietary Pilates reformer. It has been quite an arduous process and learning curve—from the design and prototype phase to the patent process and, more recently, the challenge of finding a manufacturer capable of delivering the product at an affordable price without compromising quality.
Once the machines are complete— hopefully by next summer—Kaci plans to replace the existing reformers in the

Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach studios. “We now have a reformer that is to reformers what Porsche is to the automobile industry,” she shares. “It is user-friendly, comfortable, smooth and delivers an incredible workout.”
WELCOME HOME
Kaci’s team ensures that RockIt Body is always a welcoming, safe place that does not tolerate competition or judgment inside the studio. Instead they provide workouts that tone, strengthen and elongate clients’ bodies—along with plenty of encouragement.
“I built an unbelievable team of managers, instructors and desk staff who run the studios like rock stars while I’m busy outside the studio learning about manufacturing or knee-deep in contracts,” Kaci says. And the team members are equally appreciative of the camaraderie.
“I love that I can be myself and it feels like home,” says instructor Milena Serina. “You know you love your job when you want to be there on your days off.”
“We are encouraged to build rapport with our clients, customize to their needs and be ourselves!” shares instructor Lo Josafat. “I love being able to bring my whole personality to work. There’s nothing cookie-cutter or scripted about our staff.”
Building community with clients is also a top priority. They’ve introduced a summer First Friday tradition of meeting at Shade MB after Friday night classes for a social hour complete with complimentary appetizers.
“It’s a nice chance to get to know the people you’ve been working out next to
“IT’S BEEN MY MISSION TO BUILD AN UNBELIEVABLE TEAM AND ALWAYS BE OPEN TO LEARNING AND GROWING.”
a little better,” Kaci says. “A lot of us met some of our best friends on the reformers at RockIt Body.”
“I love that we don’t have a specific clientele—we have clients who are young, more mature, fit, coming back from injuries, athletes and those who are just beginning their fitness journey,” says instructor Jennifer Chan. “And we welcome them all.”
STAYING GROUNDED
RockIt Body is often out and about raising funds for a variety of worthy causes. This summer they sponsored a team for the Charley Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament at the Manhattan Beach International Surf Festival. “It was more fun than we could have possibly imagined,” Kaci says. “We are already looking forward to it again next summer!”
While she continues to keep her head in the clouds coming up with new dreams to pursue, such as opening additional studios in the future, Kaci’s feet are firmly planted on the ground in the present moment. She
stays actively involved in the studio, teaching her own Pilates certification program as well as weekly classes and a few private sessions for long-time clients. She also teaches yoga classes at Equinox South Bay and takes fitness classes at other Los Angeles studios to stay up-to-date on industry trends.
“I got into this business with a passion for Pilates and people,” Kaci shares. “I surrounded myself with good people, smarter than me, and I learned from them. I had no idea the education it would become in so many areas of expertise. Surely there will be hiccups and headaches in the days to come, but when they do … I’ll figure it out!”

SISTERS
JAZA SHAIKH AND SANA SHAIKH SHAKE UP A UNIQUE SPIN ON A FAMILY BUSINESS.
Written by Kara Mickelson | Photography courtesy of LA SALT CO
For South Bay natives Jaza Shaikh and Sana Shaikh, starting a business centered around salt was a natural progression. Born and raised in Palos Verdes, the sisters feel a deep connection to Southern California’s outdoor lifestyle. “We’ve always been drawn to the natural world, especially the ocean,” Jaza explains.
At a young age, the pair began working summers in their family’s Carson-based business, which now sells over 1 million pounds of salt monthly for use in well-known household and commercial products. Jaza and Sana learned the science of selecting the best raw ingredients to make an effective product. Soon, they started selling wholesale specialty salts in bulk under
the brand Los Angeles Salt Company.
Two years later they rebranded the business to LA SALT CO, including direct-to-consumer and privatelabel product lines in the beauty and wellness space. They sell bath salts, bath bombs and salt pouches. As their customers’ interest in their mineral-rich products grew, so did the vision and scope of their business.
“Creating LA SALT CO was a way to combine our love for wellness with our knowledge of the salt industry,” Sana says. “It was our way of bringing the consumer a sense of luxury and a spa-like experience at home.”
Salt’s unique properties in skin care remain somewhat underappreciated. With their products, Jaza and
“WE’VE ALWAYS BEEN DRAWN TO THE NATURAL WORLD, ESPECIALLY THE OCEAN.”
Sana capitalized on an opportunity to highlight the benefits of salt’s mineral content, which is exceptional for detoxifying and rejuvenating the skin.
“Salt baths are known for soothing sore muscles and joints and have even been found to alleviate chronic skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis,” shares Jaza.
The ocean inspires their brand inside and out, from the frosted glass bottles to salt soaks resembling sea glass. With names such as Joy, Balance and Breeze, their offerings reflect a desire to create harmony with nature and the body.
Working together as sisters has its advantages. Growing up in the family business alongside their parents and younger brother, Sana and Jaza learned to balance different roles and leverage each other’s strengths early on.
One sister focuses on creativity—including branding, product development and the company’s overall vision—while the other excels at operations, ensuring product quality and smooth business functions. Together they handle everything in-house—from formulation to packaging—and maintain complete control over ingredient sourcing, creative details and product quality.
The pair visit each manufacturer to ensure the raw ingredients are pure, sustainably harvested and ethically sourced. This direct relationship ensures that their products are made with the best possible ingredients and crafted to the highest standards—benefitting their customers, the environment and local communities.
They are proud to be Leaping Bunny-certified, an international cruelty-free designation.
The global reach of their business venture has tangible ripple effects of goodwill, including business partners who invest locally and the workers involved in the production process. On a visit to their supplier of Himalayan salt in Pakistan, they were pleased to see that the local business had built a hospital, health care center and school and served meals to the workers during the workday.
A milestone for the brand and business occurred with a collaboration alongside the prestigious Ron Herman in Japan. The partnership created a custom line, LA SALT CO x Ron Herman, focusing on their Zen salt soaks.
The celebrity exposure from the partnership product launch in Japan expanded their reach internationally and solidified their reputation for quality and
innovation. They also have unique private label collaborations with major box brands like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, and their own line is sold at luxury hotels.
Balancing creativity with business is a juggling act the sisters have come to enjoy. Having clear roles helps keep the company running smoothly while allowing space for new ideas. Jaza and Sana stay innovative by exploring new trends, performing extensive research, listening to customer feedback, spending time in the lab and rigorously testing new products.
“Being hands-on in the lab keeps us connected to our products, ensuring every formula is something we’re proud of,” says Sana. ■

AS HER SUCCESSFUL CAREER AS A FITNESS PERSONALITY AND BUSINESS OWNER TAKES AN EXCITING NEW TURN, KATRINA SCOTT REFLECTS ON HER THIRD PREGNANCY AND THE CHALLENGES SHE AND HER HUSBAND ENCOUNTERED MEETING THIS “MIRACLE” MOMENT.
Written
by Tanya Monaghan | Photographed by Jen Hochstadt
In the world of fitness, few names are as recognizable as Katrina Scott. A mother of two with another on the way, Katrina has built a successful career that spans fitness, entrepreneurship and media.
But her journey to the top has not been without its challenges. From her humble beginnings in New Hampshire to becoming a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, Katrina’s story is one of perseverance, growth and a deep commitment to fostering community—a story that resonates deeply with the many women she inspires.
“My husband, Brian, and I are both from New Hampshire, and we met when we were 19,” she shares. Their two-decade relationship flourishes through mutual growth and discovery. “We keep getting to know each other. Someone told me, ‘Never stop dating your partner,’ and that advice has stayed with us.”
After graduating from Keene State College with a degree in exercise science, Katrina set her sights on a fitness career. She began as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor in Boston, where she fell in love with the connection and camaraderie that group classes fostered. It wasn’t long before Katrina realized that her calling extended beyond the gym walls.
“I was teaching group fitness classes and saw how the women in my class connected with each other,” she recalls. “That’s what community is—creating a space where people can come together and support one another.”
This sense of community would become the foundation of her career. In 2006, as the world began to explore the possibilities of online video content, Katrina was approached by a producer to become one of the first certified fitness experts on YouTube. “I was so camera-shy, but Brian encouraged me to think outside the gym,” she remembers.
Katrina took the leap and started filming fitness videos, becoming a pioneer in the online fitness space. Her videos have since reached over 100 million women worldwide, solidifying her status as one of the most recognizable names in wellness.
In pursuit of bigger dreams, Katrina and Brian moved to California. Brian flew to Los Angeles, driving all along the coast from Santa Monica to Newport Beach. He came down Vista Del Mar and saw a sign posted on a telephone pole in El Porto. That real estate listing would become their first home.
“Even now when I walk through El Porto, especially on a misty surf morning, and hear the sound of all the electricity running through those poles, I feel nostalgic for that electricity that was in me when I first moved to El Porto,” Katrina says.
In Manhattan Beach they found community, and the couple quickly became immersed—with Katrina teaching at local gyms and fitness clubs. She juggled multiple jobs, driving all over Los Angeles to train clients including former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
Katrina co-founded Tone It Up, a fitness company that exploded into a wellness brand, which she and Brian have since exited. “Back in 2010 Brian said to me, ‘Why don’t you create your own protein bars,’ and then he founded our nutrition company—creating an entire line of nutrition products for our community,” Katrina shares. “He’s the brilliant creator behind the scenes with no ego, letting the women in his life shine.”
Katrina’s impact on the fitness world reached new heights in 2021 when she was named Sports Illustrated Rookie of the Year and again in 2022 when she became the first visibly pregnant swimsuit model to grace the pages of the iconic magazine. This groundbreaking moment was not just a personal triumph but also a powerful statement about body positivity and the beauty of motherhood.
“One thing that has contributed to the success of my career is doing it from a place like Manhattan Beach, where the lifestyle is so healthy and communitydriven,” Katrina says.
While her professional accomplishments are numerous, Katrina’s journey to motherhood has been marked by challenges and loss. “This is my seventh pregnancy,” she shares candidly. “I’ve experienced immense loss trying to grow our family, but each experience has shaped me and taught me something new.”
Her honesty about the struggles of miscarriage and
fertility has resonated deeply with her community, offering hope and solidarity to other women facing similar challenges. She experienced her first loss at the beginning of 2020.
“We miscarried when the shutdown started. I was at the hospital by myself with Brian waiting in the parking garage. My doctor, Dr. Lily Lee, was there for me when neither Brian nor my mother could be there to hold my hand. I’ll always remember the way that she was there for me through all of this. She’s been through a lot with me.”
Katrina learned through that loss that she could either retreat or share her experience to help others. “Being in that hospital where everyone was alone, surrounded by people with masks and plastic and gloves, I realized that all of us were experiencing something difficult and we were all collectively going through it alone. I was sitting there, looking around, making eye contact with other people, wondering what each person was going through. And so through my healing, it helped to share my experience because when we go through loss, we can help someone and in turn it heals a little part of us.”
After they endured a third loss, Katrina’s doctor asked if the couple would consider hormonal health therapy. “We sought out Reproductive Partners, and the care we received was incredible,” she says. “It helped to look at my body and figure out what I needed help with. Walking into a clinic and asking for help, as a woman, to have a baby was like asking for help outside of me for something that I thought my body was supposed to know how to do. And I am so glad I did because it worked, and we got pregnant!”
Katrina’s recent surprise pregnancy, which she describes as a “miracle,” has been particularly meaningful. “Every single class I’ve taught at Studio KSL, this little miracle baby has been with us,” she says. “It’s almost like a blessing that we are on the right path. I still honor the pregnancies that I’ve lost and the babies that I’ve connected with. Someone once told me that this baby is a spirit that’s always been wanting to come. This spirit has been trying to be here this whole time.”
Studio KSL (Katrina Scott Lifestyle), her latest venture, is a fitness studio that also embodies everything Katrina stands for: kinetics, strength and longevity.
“KSL is all about functional training for life, training for being a mom and training for whatever challenges you face,” she says.
The studio, which Brian built with his own hands, is more than just a place to work out. It’s a space where women can come together to build strength—both physically and mentally. “You live longer when you have community and purpose,” Katrina emphasizes.
She defines her purpose as her love of being a teacher and connecting women. Katrina’s philosophy on fitness goes beyond the body; it’s about the full circle of life.
“We already have the strength within us,” she says, “we just have to find it. And sometimes standing back up and starting over is the only option.” This message of resilience is at the heart of her new chapter, both as a fitness leader and as a mother.
Looking ahead, Katrina is excited to expand Studio KSL and launch a new app that will bring her workouts and community-building ethos to women around the world. “I want anyone, anywhere to be able to be a part of Studio KSL,” she says. “It’s scary building something new, but it’s also so rewarding to know that we are building a legacy for our family.”
As she and Brian prepare to welcome their third child, Katrina reflects on how her children have shaped her. This pregnancy mirrors the rebirth of her fitness career and a rebirth of her family.
“I don’t think I would have had the courage to keep going if I hadn’t had our first daughter, Bella. As soon as we realize that our kids are watching us and listening, it holds us accountable as adults to do what’s best for not only ourselves but also our family,” she says. “Bella has held me accountable, and Colette taught me to surrender—walking in and asking for help, and then surrendering during our labor and delivery. And this baby has taught me courage. It’s a beautiful thing.”
Katrina’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, community and love. Whether through her fitness classes, her YouTube channel or her honest conversations about motherhood and loss, she continues to inspire millions of women to find their strength, embrace their journey and never stop building the life they dream of. ■

SELF CARE: WE GOT YOU
Are you exhausted from all the summer fun? Do you need a “ME-cation” after the family getaway?
Just the one of you? Beach days, backyard barbecues, concerts here and afar, hiking, biking and relatives visiting. It’s a lot of fun but also, well, just a lot.
Valerie Sartini of Treasures Interior Design has the antidote to all that. She and her team design spaces to de-crank the cranky and restore your energy when you’re running on your very last little fume.
One of the best investments to stave off the world’s everyday crazy, Valerie suggests, is the primary en suite bathroom. It can serve as a serene space from the time we squint awake, pre-coffee, to the time we lay our heads on the pillow. And when we need a little escape, say with some bubbles and a good book, it invites us in: close the door, flip on a gentle playlist, step in the tub … and the traffic jam, the grocery cart with the bum wheel and the neighbor’s barking dog all disappear!
“I like to create a tranquil space in the primary bathroom using neutral colors and natural light,” Valerie explains. “It makes a calming, serene and very personal space where people can decompress and relax. Who doesn’t need that on a regular basis?”
She points out that another thing that helps create a peaceful space in the primary bath is reducing the clutter. “I love clear counters and hidden hooks. I like robes and towels tucked away. So we design with intention, to be organized behind cabinets: plugs in drawers and compartments to store products and tools.”
Crisp, luxurious bath towels and mats, recessed lighting and beautiful wall sconces add to the spa-like feel in a primary en suite designed to restore. And music always sets a mood. Valerie makes sure the in-home music system can stream to every part of the house, including bathrooms.
“There are so many ways we can design a space in a home to help our clients relax. Creating a luxurious and custom en suite just off the primary bedroom is one of the best ways to do just that,” Valerie smiles.

WHEN THINGS GET STRESSFUL FOR FREE DIVER, PHOTOGRAPHER AND YOGI JOY MIYATAKE, SHE KNOWS TO JUST BREATHE.
Written by Kara Mickelson | Photographed by Joy Miyatake
Joy Miyatake was born into a family that boasts four generations of professional photographers. Her journey of self-discovery, pictorial storytelling and artistic pursuits to heal generational trauma has roots in her family’s legacy.
Toyo Miyatake, her great-grandfather, started a photography business in 1923 in Little Tokyo. During World War II, he and his family were interned at Manzanar, one of 10 camps where over 110,000 Japanese Americans were detained.
Toyo famously smuggled a lens and negative film holder into the camp, and later a carpenter created a makeshift camera box for him. He eventually gained favor with administrators at the camp and became the “in-house” photographer.
His work during his internment lasted three years, providing a unique personal collection of life as he saw it through the lens. This gained him notoriety among other great photographers such as Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange.
Joy’s father, Gary, was also a well-known professional photographer in the South Bay—he often photographed politicians. As a young girl, working in the family business and Gardena studio, she digitized her grandfather’s photos and acted as Gary’s photo assistant for weddings. Along the way, she absorbed the basics of lighting and composition and learned the art of telling a visual story.
Like many young adults, Joy’s relationship with her father was tenuous at times. Yet they often talked about the fundamentals of photography when reviewing her photos. It was their way of communicating.
While there was some pressure for Joy to take over the family photography business, she was determined to find her path. Pulled into a dark place during her young adult life away from home, she struggled with negative patterns and behavior. She only had “blunt tools” to process her pain until she found yoga and began to study breath work and address some unresolved trauma.
For Joy, yoga is both a mental and physical practice. She credits the transformative power of yoga with laying the groundwork for her to become a free diver and
underwater photographer.
She also credits it for helping her achieve a more balanced, joyful life. She learned to control her breath, improve her physical strength, sustain herself in the water, calm her mind by regulating her emotions, and deal with stress both in and out of the water.
In 2020, during the pandemic, she embarked on a new hobby. A general worry about supply chain issues prompted her to learn spearfishing for its practical value, providing fish for family and friends.
After her first few dives, she was drawn to the “magical other world where time appears to move at a different speed.” It was something she knew she wanted to share, and yet she also understood the dangers after tragically losing colleagues and friends to the sport. With that knowledge, she set out to get certified in free diving and become an instructor.
She trained in Egypt and Mexico, taught a spearfishing class in Cornwall, England, and is one of a few people in the world to free dive into the icy cold water near a glacier in Alaska. Water serves as a backdrop for her photography—a natural place to explore with wonder
“IF WE ARE WILLING TO GO DEEP AND EXPLORE THE UNKNOWN, THERE IS A SENSE OF BEAUTY AMONG FEAR AND DISCOMFORT.”
and a symbol of her life’s work. Forever curious, she constantly pushes to see what’s under the surface and dive deep—whether into the ocean or her psyche.
Joy says your consciousness and awareness shift to your surroundings underwater. “It’s an indescribable experience for non-divers,” she shares. “Imagine a heightened, dreamlike state of walking through a deepsea kelp forest illuminated by beams of sunlight. And if luck would have it, a whale might swim beneath you.”
Her diving experiences and unique photos highlight the ethereal beauty of exploring a world under the surface. A dancer captured in motion—free, fluid, suspended in an altered state. A free diver loosely tethered to a rope line, as if from another realm. Composing, harnessing the light and shooting come naturally to Joy. It’s in her DNA.
She sees parallels between what lurks under the surface and the subconscious mind. The water is Joy’s place to find serenity, healing and peace in the moment while connecting to both the future and her past. She says, “If we are willing to go deep and explore the unknown, there is a sense of beauty among fear and discomfort.” ■

INTUITIVE JENNIFER SHAFFER SAYS HER UNIQUE GIFT TEACHES HER HOW TO LIVE AND LOVE DEEPER.
Written by Jen Turquand
Photographed by Monica Orozco
Do you believe some people have a special intuition or can speak with the dead? I wouldn’t say I was a skeptic, but I was not necessarily convinced. Then I met Jennifer Shaffer.
On the hunt for something fun and different to do, I stumbled upon Medium Mondays at Uncorked in Manhattan Beach. I thought it would be amusing, if nothing else. Not only was it entertaining, but I discovered something astonishing and emotional as well.
As we went into the event, my friend asked me what I wanted to gain from the experience. I offhandedly replied that I wanted an apology from “a certain someone.” We were welcomed into a room of about 20 people with a nice glass of wine, and the group reading began.
Most participants asked for advice from loved ones who had passed on, which prompted me to ask, “When someone passes over, do they become smarter or more enlightened?” Jennifer assured me that they are the same people but more aware. For instance, if someone hurt you, they know it—but she wouldn’t recommend asking your religious grandmother if she approves of your extramarital affair.
I decided to inquire if anyone I know who had passed wanted to speak to me. Jennifer described a man (check), chain-smoking (check), who wanted to say he was very, very sorry (check, and now the tears are flowing). I thought, “Wow, this is crazy!”
As she spoke to person after person, emotions ran high. Some were warm and fuzzy, like the young mom whose grandma praised her for improving upon family recipes by adding her own twist. Others felt relief, or a weight lifted off their shoulders. One woman who had been involved in an accident was encouraged to forgive herself—by the person who had tragically passed away in the same accident. It was phenomenal
Jennifer, who prefers the term “intuitive” rather than medium or psychic, says she has been communicating with spirits since childhood … possibly due to her frequent seizures and subsequent belladonna treatment. The messages she receives are often not literal, so it took her many years of hard work and study to learn to interpret them correctly.
“WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM THE DEAD IS HOW TO LIVE AND HOW TO LOVE.”
A former stockbroker and triathlete—and now among the top in her field as an intuitive—Jennifer is sought out by celebrities, athletes, CEOs and politicians. A significant amount of her professional life is spent supporting law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Recently her team received recognition for their assistance in removing over 400 pounds of fentanyl from the streets.
She has been on multiple news shows, has traveled the world as an expert speaker, is the subject of four best-selling books and has a podcast. There are currently two television shows about her in development. Jennifer is chic, personable and, despite her impressive resume, really down to earth.
The longtime Manhattan Beach resident has been married to her husband, Freddy, for 23 years, and they have two kids, Jack and Blake. She donates her time doing “Wine & Spirits” readings for local nonprofits like Mychal’s Learning Place and Walk With Sally. She also works with a collaboration of intuitives who provide their services to resolve unsolved crimes.
While she understands that there will always be nonbelievers, that doesn’t bother her. Her dad, a Mormon bishop, told her, “It’s not your job to make anyone believe anything.”
She feels blessed and grateful for the life she has and her ability to help people. “What I have learned from the dead is how to live and how to love,” she shares. “If you love yourself, your whole world will change.” ■
EVERY CHILD DESERVES A CHANCE
Supporting a bright future for our youngest community members
WRITTEN BY LAURA L. WATTS | PHOTOGRAPHED BY SHANE O’DONNELL
As the holiday season nears, our thoughts turn toward the holly and the jolly. It’s easy to overlook the abuse of innocent people that’s happening all around us. But facing hard facts is the first step in preventing family violence.
Children are suffering from an epidemic of child abuse and neglect, and organizations like Richstone Family Center work tirelessly to improve the statistics. Did you know that an instance of child abuse is reported every 10 seconds? According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, an average of five children die every day as a result of child abuse.
A HAVEN FOR THE COMMUNITY
Since 1974, Richstone Family Center has provided mental health treatment, educational programs and community empowerment in Los Angeles County with the goals of eliminating trauma, strengthening and educating families, and preventing violence in homes, schools and communities. The organization provides a safe haven through an array of services, including individual and family therapy, afterschool offerings, support groups, youth empowerment and social skills groups, early childhood intervention and parenting classes, weekly food distribution and home visitations.
Founded as a child abuse treatment organization, Richstone Family Center has
grown into a beacon of positive change for countless people. In the early days, Richstone served 70 families from a small home with a chinchilla farm out back. Five decades later, the organization operates from a 12,000-square-foot center, providing assistance to more than 3,400 children and families each year.
Richstone’s therapy programs help survivors transition out of crisis and down a path of healing, building coping skills and long-term resilience. Online educational sessions include topics such as stress management and support groups for survivors of violence. Through activities like Kids Club and Parents as Teachers, Richstone develops healthy, enriching environments in which children and families can thrive.
“Richstone centers its work around promoting the safety, well-being and positive growth of children,” says development director Allison Tanaka. “Every child deserves a chance at a bright future.”
The nonprofit was founded on the belief that no one experiencing violence in the home should be turned away. Richstone provides care to underserved, marginalized and at-risk populations—families that may be unable to afford the costs of services offered elsewhere. Without Richstone, these community members may not receive the treatment they desperately need.
“We believe that constraints in treatment length or modality will limit long-term
success, so clients can remain in therapy until mutually agreed-upon goals have been achieved,” Allison says. “With the help of the community, we can expand our reach and connect with more families to provide them support when they need it most.”
STANDING TO GETHER
Over the decades, thousands of volunteers and donors have become an integral part of the Richstone team to contribute to a world of healing. This time of year, every donation—big or small—makes a meaningful impact and helps Richstone with its annual Thanksgiving Basket and Operation Santa.
“The joy and gratitude emanating from the families we served last holiday season are a testament to the power of community and compassion,” says Roger Van Remmen, Richstone’s president/CEO. “Through the community’s generosity, we’ve provided tangible support and created hopeful memories and joyful moments for those in need.”
Throughout the year, volunteer opportunities are available for individuals, groups and corporations. Individuals may tutor or mentor via the Kids Club. They may help with administrative work and events, or collect and sort donations and food. Groups can help with the backpack campaign, food pantry and holiday fundraising events. Companies can get involved with Richstone Family Center as a corporate partner— providing gifts-in-kind, participating in
volunteer projects and sponsoring events.
Whether it’s through donations of time, talent, funds, feedback or resources, community donors make Richstone’s work possible. This effort by South Bay locals also sends a powerful message of support and compassion to the struggling families served by Richstone—letting them know they are not alone and that a caring community stands with them during difficult times.
LOOKING FORWARD
As Richstone Family Center celebrates its 50th anniversary of mending hearts and preventing child abuse and domestic violence in the South Bay and beyond, it looks forward to the next 50 years of efforts to make the community safer. Future plans include nurturing healers and counselors through advanced training and mentorship programs; expanding the organization’s staff to ensure every individual receives the care and attention they deserve; enhancing the mental health of community members; strengthening collaborations with school, government and community partners to generate comprehensive solutions; and strengthening families by fostering protective factors like parental resilience and social connections.
Richstone Family Center’s vision is to make this world a better place by creating meaningful change through collective action. By educating ourselves, supporting those in need and speaking out openly, we can help end the stigma and shame that burden survivors so we can be part of the solution. The greatest gift we can give is to learn more about how to help.

The little girl came to Richstone quiet and shy. She wanted to draw.
A paper was given.
She drew a heart, cut it out, then tore it into little pieces.
“This is how I feel. My heart is broken.”
She gave the pieces to me.
Time passed and on her last day,
The little girl asked for her heart.
She taped the pieces together very carefully and said, “My heart was broken and you mended it.”
This poem, written about a child who received help at Richstone Family Center, was the inspiration for the organization’s 50th anniversary logo: a heart mended in the ancient Japanese art style of kintsugi, symbolizing Richstone’s commitment to mending hearts and empowering communities.
Richstone Family Center’s Endless Summer Beach Party
Richstone’s 10th annual event included 400+ guests on the beach at King Harbor for a Boots on The Beach hoedown. The event included a sampling of delectable food and incredible drinks, all donated by notable local South Bay purveyors. Proceeds from the event are integral to furthering Richstone’s mission to treat and prevent child abuse, trauma and domestic violence in the greater South Bay community.

FLY-FISHER AND HOLISTIC SKIN CARE GURU ERICA MARIE GATT BELIEVES OUR GREATEST BEAUTY LIES WITHIN.
Written by Tanya Monaghan | Photographed by Shane O’Donnell
In an era where many find themselves torn between career ambitions and personal passions, Erica Marie Gatt is the rare individual who has managed to merge her loves seamlessly. Standing 6 feet tall with a natural grace, she is not only a talented aesthetician with a thriving beauty business but also an avid fly-fisher who spends her free time casting lines in the serene waters of Idaho and the Florida Keys.
Balancing two very different worlds, Erica has built a life that many would envy. In her words, this life is a testament to “God’s plan” and husband Mike’s unyielding encouragement, patience and support.
For Erica, fly-fishing is more than just a hobby; it’s a way to reconnect with herself and her loved ones. She speaks with a glint in her eye about the sense of peace that washes over her.
“When I’m in the middle of nowhere fishing with my husband, I feel like life couldn’t get any better and nothing else matters,” she says, reflecting on the many hours spent by the water, rods in hand, as they chase tarpon and bonefish in Florida or trout in the rivers of Idaho.
Her love for fishing started when she was just a child. She caught her first fish at age 11. “I got a dollar, and I was so stoked,” she laughs.
Erica’s passion for fishing goes beyond the thrill of the catch. She practices catch and release, ensuring that the fish she catches are returned safely to the water. The time spent fishing has become an integral part of her life, offering a refreshing contrast to her day-today routine. Erica has even set her sights on breaking world records, with a goal of shattering at least two records in the next three years.
“I know my capability, and I can do it,” she says with quiet determination, having enlisted the help of a fishing coach to make it happen. Fishing has evolved from
her pastime to a personal challenge and a sport where she’s constantly pushing her limits.
Erica’s path to success wasn’t a simple one. Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, she experienced a childhood full of challenges but equally rich in life lessons. “We didn’t have much money,” Erica recalls, “but my parents made sure to provide the essentials.”
She quickly learned the value of hard work. At a young age she was knocking on neighbors’ doors, offering to wash cars and mow lawns. “If I wanted something—whether it was trendy clothes or just to go to the movies—I had to work for it,” she shares. That work ethic shaped her into the driven entrepreneur she is today.
Her fascination with beauty also started young.
Raised by her mother and grandmother, both of whom sold Avon products, Erica spent her childhood experimenting with makeup and skin care. “I would chase my sisters around, doing their makeup and giving them facials,” she remembers, laughing.
Her grandmother played a significant role in her upbringing. She sewed clothes, which Erica would model for her. These early experiences sparked her lifelong passion for beauty, which would later become her career.
But despite the joys she found in beauty, Erica’s childhood wasn’t without hardship. She didn’t meet her father until she was 8 years old, only for him to disappear again a few years later. “It made me sad because he’s had a rough fight,” she says of her father, who struggled with homelessness.
Yet she still speaks about him with love, recounting how her husband has embraced her father, even helping him with money or a place to stay when he needs it. “It’s his journey,” Erica says with empathy, demonstrating the deep sense of compassion that has guided her through life’s difficulties.
Her journey into the beauty industry began with dreams of Hollywood glamour. In 2010 she moved to California, determined to succeed as a makeup artist. “People thought I was crazy,” she admits, but her determination paid off. After working with A-list
celebrities like the Kardashians, Vanessa Hudgens and the cast of Modern Family, Erica realized that her true passion was in skin care.
Her career as an aesthetician took off when she started working with a prominent aesthetician in Beverly Hills, a pivotal moment that deepened her love for skin care. “I realized how much I love skin,” she says.
She opened her first studio space in Hermosa Beach just before COVID-19 hit. “I bought my Hydrafacial machine and focused more on facial treatments,” says Erica, who had built a strong clientele in the South Bay and was known for her unique blend of Eastern and Western skin care techniques.
Her business, EM Skin Studio, is more than just a place for facials—it’s a sanctuary. “Our mission is to provide a safe, clean and welcoming environment where every client feels relaxed and valued,” she says proudly.
For Erica, it’s not just about appearances; it’s about making people feel good in their own skin. “That’s what is missing in the beauty industry. Pamela Anderson says it best: ‘We’re not anti-aging, we are life-ing.’” Her goal is to empower clients to feel confident and beautiful, no matter their age.
Erica has also made it her mission to transform the beauty industry from within, hoping to create a more supportive environment for new aestheticians. “When I first started, I had some bad experiences,” she says, alluding to the competitive and sometimes cutthroat nature of the industry. She wants to change that.
“I’m determined to create a space where new aestheticians feel welcomed, supported and empowered,” says Erica, whose leadership at EM Skin reflects this philosophy. Her business provides a nurturing environment where both clients and professionals can thrive.
One of the things that sets Erica apart is her intuitive ability to connect with people. “I’m very intuitive, and I can feel people’s energy,” she says of the skill that has helped her succeed.
Whether she’s working with a client to address their skin care concerns or talking to kids about the correlation between diet and breakouts, Erica’s goal is to educate, empower and emphasize the importance of
“I’M HELPING PEOPLE LEAN IN TO SELF-CARE, AND IT’S IMPORTANT.”
holistic wellness. “A lot of what’s going on in your skin is gut-based,” she explains.
As the eldest of six girls and two boys, family has always been central to Erica’s life. Now, as an aunt to six nieces and eight nephews, and with a goddaughter as well, she takes pride in encouraging the next generation to follow their dreams. “I love talking to them about their goals and passions,” she says, recalling how her uncles inspired her when she was young. Her nieces and nephews, in turn, look up to her as a role model, always eager to share their aspirations with her.
Erica’s life is a testament to balance. Whether she’s working in her serene Hermosa Beach studio, spending time with her husband in nature or mentoring young aestheticians, she embodies a sense of calm and purpose. For her, beauty is more than skin deep, and fishing is more than a sport. It’s all about connection— to herself, to her loved ones, and to the world around her. In her own words, “I’m helping people lean in to self-care, and it’s important.”
Between her career in the beauty industry and her love for fishing … between hard work and self-care, Erica has managed a lovely equilibrium. Whether she’s standing on the banks of a river, fishing rod in hand, or in her serene Hermosa Beach studio helping clients feel clean and confident, Erica lives a life filled with passion, purpose and peace. “We aren’t getting old; we’re getting wise.” ■

WITH KAREN STURGES SERVING ON TEAM LA28, THE UPCOMING OLYMPICS WILL GO FOR GOLD.
Written by Scott Sanford Tobis | Photographed by Shane O’Donnell
In four years, Los Angeles will light the torch for the 2028 Olympic Games. After a highly praised—and profitable—event in 1984, the city hopes to duplicate that success in 21st-century fashion. And a South Bay resident is part of the team leading that charge.
Intelligence, an intuitive nature and business acumen helped Karen Sturges climb the ranks from an auditor at Arthur Andersen to a 25-year career in the entertainment industry—including stints at Disney, Warner Bros., Universal and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Three years ago she was appointed as chief financial officer for LA28, the nonprofit organization that oversees the L.A. Olympics and Paralympics.
While a professional force of nature, Karen disarms with her warmth and thoughtfulness—admirable traits that certainly distinguish her in the field. At the Manhattan Beach home she shares with her husband, Tom, and son, Kian, she is both accommodating and fully relaxed—a manner that belies her position as the executive of a massive and far-reaching endeavor that will likely dazzle our city with the largest and most compelling Olympic sports program in history. The event is expected to employ 50,000+ staff members and 70,000+ volunteers and is already modernizing our infrastructure and public transit system.
“The challenges are extraordinary because the complexities involved are tremendous,” she shares. “We will spend billions of dollars across hundreds of categories and must consider potential market pricing escalation, supply chain, labor market impacts, scope and amount of government-funded projects that impact the Games’ footprint, as well as the timing of our major revenue streams like our sponsorships, broadcast partners and ticket sales. All of this with complete transparency. And that’s just one brick in the wall.”
Karen is playing three-dimensional chess while the rest of us are playing checkers. There’s a reason she was appointed CFO; Karen can juggle all moving parts masterfully.
“We have the opportunity to bring together the best of L.A.—the people, the places, the cultures and the creative spirit that built this city—all in service to the Olympic dream,” she says. “I can’t wait to see these plans as they come to life—to see the world’s athletes competing and inspiring generations to come on one of the greatest stages in sports.”
Many question how the Olympics will affect an already challenging traffic problem in the city. Karen explains that the goal is to host a “transit-first” event.
“We will rely on the completion of several public agency transportation and mobility projects,” she says. “We added five sports—baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash—so we will have the largest sports program in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Now it’s our responsibility to plan and execute and enable a great athlete and fan experience.”
Thanks to these efforts, one can hope that snarled traffic on the way to SoFi Stadium, among other venues, will be less of a factor than in years past.
When asked what she was most looking forward to down the road, Karen first detailed with businesslike precision the various complexities of the upcoming event. Eventually she relented and admitted that she could see herself at the end of the Games, sitting on her balcony with her husband, a martini in her hand, watching the sun sink into the Pacific Ocean.

SHE PLAYS FOR THE RAMS
JENNIFER PRINCE MIRRORS THE LOS ANGELES RAMS’ ON-FIELD SUCCESS WITH OFF-FIELD INNOVATION, TENACITY AND GRIT.
Written
Linda Grasso

| Photographed by Shane O’Donnell | Hair & makeup by Jenny Karl
For dedicated football fans, it’s the day they’ve been waiting for since the Super Bowl in February. It’s a scorching Sunday in August at SoFi Stadium, and it’s the preseason opener between the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys. As usual, Jennifer Prince is walking the stadium hours before kickoff. Jennifer is the chief commercial officer of the Rams, which means for her and her team of 40, it’s a different kind of game day.
“Happy game day!” she says with a big smile as she greets her squad. Dressed in their own version of corporate casual (the favored color is Rams royal blue), the sales and marketing team is getting down to business.
While they have their game faces on, Jennifer cuts through with a big hug for a member of her team, James Daniel, and a warm welcome for the newest member, Jessica Weinstein. “This is your first game, right?” Jennifer says. Like a coach, she is getting her players ready to do what they do best.
Jennifer cuts a petite frame in a world full of large humans. She is, however, comfortable with colleagues and clients—so much so that she casts a long shadow. Before and during the game, she spends hours luxury box-hopping and connecting with the Rams’ most valuable partners.
“I consider myself an extrovert,” she says. “I’m social and outgoing and can be put in any social situation with ease and comfort.”
As one of the NFL’s premier franchises, the Los Angeles Rams are a big business. While NFL teams generate most of their revenue from the league’s TV contracts, each franchise is able to market their team locally through sponsorships with brands and partnerships with media outlets like KABC-7 and Good Karma Brands/ESPN Radio.
According to GlobalData, a data and analytics company, the Rams are estimated to have received nearly
$150 million from partners for the 2023–2024 season. (A Rams spokesperson would not confirm the amount.) This is the vast enterprise that Jennifer oversees.
A quick trip around the futuristic SoFi shows the fruits of her sales team’s labor. The logos of Rams sponsors fill every high-impact spot: American Airlines, Verizon, Google, Pepsi, Corona, YouTube and more.
Playing in the big-ticket sponsorship world for the Rams is a logical progression for an executive whose résumé is filled with major players in the world of digital media. Jennifer played an important role in the commercialization of behemoths like Google and Twitter.
“Sometimes I feel like I’ve done it all,” she says. “I’ve worked the buying and selling sides of media. I’ve worked for start-ups, private and public companies. I’ve been through two IPOs. What I’ve learned is that there is no script to succeed professionally and that the one constant is embracing change.”
In August 2013, Jennifer signed on as senior director of media and entertainment at Twitter. Just a few months later, the social media platform went public—an experience that she describes as challenging and rewarding. She stayed at Twitter for more than eight years, eventually working as a VP running all global content, helping sports leagues, media companies and creators distribute content on the platform worldwide.
It’s no surprise that she got on the radar of the Rams. At one point she had an email business exchange with Rams president Kevin Demoff, who later reached out to her about coming on board to work for the franchise. At the time she passed on the opportunity but eventually became intrigued and was hired as chief commercial officer.
Once again she stepped into a new job in a tumultuous arena. She started with the Rams on December 1, 2021, toward the end of what turned out to be a “pretty wild” season. After losing all their games in November, the Rams started winning again in December. They capped the season by winning Super Bowl LVI on their home turf at SoFi Stadium. It was their second Super Bowl championship; the last time the Rams won was in 2000.
“Imagine writing a script for the first season—fans
“THERE ARE A TOn OF FEMALES inTERESTEd in SPORTS And wORking wiTHin SPORTS. i REcOMMEnd THiS induSTRY FOR AnY FEMALES

in a brand new, state-of-the-art stadium, where the team that plays in that stadium wins the Super Bowl on their own turf. It was sensational. After we won the Super Bowl, a former Twitter executive said, ‘You already peaked three months into your new sports job. It’s all going downhill from here!’” she recalls, laughing.
But in fact the exact opposite has happened. When Jennifer started the job, 20 people reported to her; today that number has doubled. And her role has expanded beyond the NFL team. She has her hands in numerous other ventures owned by Stan Kroenke.
In addition to the Rams and SoFi Stadium, the Kroenke sports empire includes the NBA Denver
Nuggets, NHL Colorado Avalanche, MLS Colorado Rapids and Arsenal FC of England’s Premier League. While she has no official responsibilities with those organizations, it’s not unusual for Jennifer to get involved in those businesses—as she describes it, “collaborating with my peers.”
In particular, she gets excited about the work she and her team have done tapping into the technology at SoFi Stadium. “With our focus on media and entertainment partnerships (like with video game publisher Activision) and being in the heart of Los Angeles, we bring nextlevel entertainment, culture, innovation and experience to our fans on game days with our extraordinary
infinity screen and stadium.”
Jennifer realizes that as a woman working in the NFL, particularly one at a high level, she stands out. But she is seeing a shift.
“There are a ton of females interested in sports and working within sports. I recommend this industry for any females looking to shine in a traditionally maledominated industry with massive opportunity ahead.”
She shares that the NFL’s longtime chief revenue officer is a woman and two NFL teams now have women as presidents. She notes that more than 50% of the Rams’ front-office employees—essentially customerfacing staff—are female.
“I get asked to speak on a ton of panels and at conferences about the power of being a female in sports. And really, if you think of tech and sports and my career journey, I’ve always been in male-dominated industries. I’ve spent a lot of time working with employee resource communities and women’s groups telling my story and having an impact on females early in their careers. I want to help catapult our position and our voice in any way I can.”
While Jennifer’s extroverted nature, work ethic and smart job choices all have led her to where she is today, she credits her success to a humanistic approach. “I
lead with the personal—by being human first. I focus on the power of human connection.”
She graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in communications in 1994 and immediately joined the work force. “I grew up with a mom and dad who both worked. My mom wanted and needed to contribute to our family’s lifestyle, and I watched her do it all. We weren’t well-to-do, but we always had what we needed.”
Sixteen years ago Jennifer married Chris Prince, and the couple has three daughters, now teenagers. Chris works in education technology—a job that has allowed him to work virtually from their home. “So he’s been very present,” she says.” I couldn’t do it without having a partner who is a lot of the time a better parent than me in terms of teaching and making sure the girls understand values. He’s my better half for sure.”
At the Rams’ training camp this past summer, the buzz was around wide receiver Puka Nacua, the fifthround Rams draft pick who had a record-setting season as a rookie last year. “Who knew—such a star!” says Jennifer—never one to forgo a personal touch. “Puka has done numerous brand deals and is sought-after. He’s doing a lot of great custom-branded content and community work. By the way, he is also a very sweet guy.” ■

Our goal is to align our services with our clients' values and long-term objectives, working to ensure that their financial and business interests are well coordinated. We aim to offer customized solutions that help clients manage their wealth, oversee their business ventures and plan for future generations.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
Growing up, I witnessed my family’s financial struggles and realized that financial literacy is not taught in school. This inspired me, in my early 20s, to pursue a career in finance—first to improve my own understanding and then to help others manage their wealth and make informed financial decisions.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND.
Earlier in my career, I worked as a trust and estate advisor for a major bank in Beverly Hills. Today I focus on serving successful business owners as a Certified Financial Planner, specializing in tax, investment and estate planning strategies. As a Certified Tax Planner and Certified Exit Planner, I assist clients considering the sale of their businesses. Over the years, I have guided individuals, families and entrepreneurs toward their financial objectives.
MULTITASK OR SINGLE FOCUS?
I consider myself a multitasker, which is common among many female business owners who often manage a variety of roles and responsibilities. This perspective is one of the reasons the family office model of financial advice resonated with me when I initially launched my business.
HOW DOES AUTHENTICITY IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS?
It is essential for every client to understand how their financial advisor is compensated, as this ensures transparency and prevents any potential concerns about whether a recommendation serves their best interests. In our family office, authenticity means being genuinely transparent—particularly because we uphold the
fiduciary standard. Transparency is one of our core values, and we take great care to avoid conflicts of interest that could influence an advisor's recommendations. This honest, straightforward approach helps build trust and fosters alignment between our clients' values, financial goals and the advice we provide.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW BOOK!
I recently authored my first book, Wisdom to be Wealthy, which explores how the family office approach to financial advice can be a valuable tool for wealth management. It also provides an insider’s perspective on the financial service industry, helping clients navigate potential conflicts of interest and make informed decisions. My hope is that it equips readers with the right questions to ask when choosing the advisor best suited for their needs. It is due out on November 14!

The experience reinforced the importance of community and the value of supporting one another in our entrepreneurial journeys.

Dr. Jaclyn: I stand on the shoulders of giants—experts in their field—and combine their collective wisdom with my personal and professional experience to enhance patient care delivery. I’ve always been grateful for the knowledge and support I’ve received over the years. This experience is woven into the fabric of my medical practice each and every day.
HOW CAN WE SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN IN BUSINESS?
Dr. Anna: I believe strongly in supporting women by offering encouragement and guidance, honoring their ambitions, providing opportunities for mentorship and coaching, and celebrating their achievements.

HOW IS YOUR PRACTICE LEADING THE WAY WITH WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY?
Women have a very unique and important role in our practice. It’s been scientifically shown that women surgeons achieve better outcomes with fewer complications. We strive to provide patients with what we would want as a consumer and patient, which sets us apart. We also love our fellow female doctors! We refer often to female physicians in the area and love the relationship we have with them and are always looking for more! It’s an amazing network that is supportive and a great resource for our patients.

Our practice excels at skin health and patient care. We all love spending time with and listening to our patients, learning what will work with their lifestyles and their health and aesthetic goals. From skin cancer to aesthetics, we pick the best treatment plan for each patient.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.

The South Bay is a special place—the people and community are warm and vibrant. Many people living here have grown up locally and embody the warm, optimistic, sunny California spirit. At our practice, the atmosphere is so positive—a mentality also makes us strive to be better doctors to make sure every patient has a great experience and the best result for them.
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN IN MEDICINE?
Dr. Moy: I think people underestimate women. In medicine, everyone and every specialty has their individual struggle. Being able to stay confident and honest about who I am is one of the things that has gotten me through many struggles. And staying positive!
Dr. Chipps: In the early years of my career, I found that it was best to say “yes” to professional invitations, which provided me exposure and opportunities for professional growth. As my career advances, I am learning to commit my time and energies to the endeavors that allow me to have the strongest positive impacts while balancing my family life and my personal well-being. This allows me to continue to love every day of work and provide my best care for each of my patients.
Dr. Goodlerner: Looking back on my career, what stands out most are relationships. My advice to other women physicians is to enjoy the journey. The bond that doctors have with their patients is unique. As physicians, we can do something good for someone every day. I also appreciate my relationships with colleagues in the Torrance medical community. We are fortunate that our community has attracted top-notch physicians in every specialty.

WHY ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT REAL ESTATE?
I maintain that real estate is and will always be a contact sport requiring hands-on, interpersonal engagement to be able to cross the finish line of my clients’ goals—be it the sale of their home (including all of the emotions that accompany such a transaction), the purchase of a principal residence (equally emotion-filled) or investment property acquisitions.

The ability to listen, integrity, empathy and generosity of spirit. Also ethics, compassion and education are important for success in any field.

My mantra has been and will always be: It is never ever over until you decide it’s over.
IN WHAT WAYS CAN WE SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN IN BUSINESS?
Mentor, share, guide, collaborate, participate, be a shoulder!
WHAT ARE SOME KEY QUALITIES FOR WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP?
Confidence, sense of self and purpose.
DESCRIBE YOUR IDEAL CLIENT.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
Many people know of my late husband’s story, as it appeared in Southbay magazine. Three years after his death, I am gloriously and happily remarried and living life to the fullest! Never give up hope, always be positive, and you will shine like a beacon radiating joy!
DEANNA O’NEIL, DVM, CVA, CCRT
Owner, South Bay Paws Up Inc.
South Bay Paws Up is a mobile veterinary practice that specializes in rehabilitation and acupuncture from the comfort of your home to minimize stress for your pet (and their human). Owner Deanna O’Neil, DVM, started South Bay Paws Up after the COVID-19 pandemic changed the dynamics of veterinary in-clinic visits. She has specialized in pet rehabilitation and acupuncture for 10 years.
Dr. O’Neil grew up in Palos Verdes Estates and graduated from Peninsula High School. She earned her undergraduate degree from Fordham University and then her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota.
After returning to Southern California, she completed an internship at a specialty veterinary hospital and achieved her certification in veterinary acupuncture from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. She became a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute and completed an internship in canine rehab at the Animal Rehabilitation Center in Velm, Belgium.
After working at two Southern California pet rehabilitation clinics, she established South Bay Paws Up in 2021.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
I have always had pets since I was little. My decision to become a veterinarian was easy, as it fulfilled my desire to help these wonderful creatures. It is amazing how resilient they can be, even when it appears the cards are stacked against them. I have witnessed so many cases where owners feel their pet is at the end of their rope because of a back or hip issue. Well, guess what? Give rehabilitation and acupuncture a try!
I love the hands-on aspect of my job and the ability to improve a pet’s quality of life. Almost every day I have an owner thank me for helping their pet walk again or, with geriatric animals, for giving owners more quality time with their pet.
WHAT LED YOU TO OPEN YOUR MOBILE VETERINARY PRACTICE?
My previous experience working in pet rehabilitation clinics was very rewarding. However, when COVID-19 protocols started, clients had to drop off their pets for appointments—giving me very little face-to-face communication with owners. I believe working with the owners and educating them about the rehabilitation process is key to positive outcomes. I have found that with traveling to my patients’ homes, the client is involved, educated and motivated toward a common, realistic goal. This experience is very rewarding for all involved.
WHAT CONDITIONS DO YOU TREAT?
Some common conditions I treat are arthritis, intervertebral disc disease, neck and back pain, limping, post-op orthopedic and neurological conditions, hip and elbow dysplasia, cranial cruciate ligament disease, and difficulty with walking or rising. I treat a wide range of pets—from puppies with congenital conditions to working dogs with injuries and geriatric dogs who have pelvic limb weakness.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT?
South Bay Paws Up is exclusive to home visits, which means I come to you! Your pet does not have to travel to a clinic for their rehabilitation needs. I find that pets are more relaxed in their home, which allows for better sessions and better outcomes.
Home visits also allow me to assess and evaluate your pet’s home environment. Sometimes something as simple as adding traction and raising food bowls makes a huge difference.
Also, having direct access to your pet’s veterinarian is unique these days. My clients have my cell phone number and can contact me directly with any questions or concerns regarding their pet’s rehabilitation program. They also have one-on-one time with me during their pet’s appointment.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY AND THE IMPACT IT HAS HAD ON YOUR BUSINESS.
The South Bay is home, and I started this business knowing I could help the pets of my community. My clients and colleagues in the South Bay have been very supportive, which has helped my business grow via word of mouth. It’s been great getting to know so many wonderful and loving pet parents here in the South Bay. I have made some lifelong friends!
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
My dream client is somebody who gets it. Much like physical therapy for people, rehabilitation for pets takes time. When owners are willing participants in their pet’s rehabilitation process, it makes a huge difference. I would love to tell Fido he needs to do his own exercises and icing while watching TV, but the reality is that Fido can’t do it on his own. Having that extra help from pet parents in between rehabilitation appointments can enhance and accelerate the recovery process.
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
My family! I am so fortunate to have a very strong, supportive family. Especially my very patient, loving spouse who helps me run my business. There is a lot that happens behind the scenes as far as scheduling, bookkeeping, etc., and I am lucky to have all that happen under one roof.

WHAT STRUGGLES HAVE YOU FACED AT WORK?
Overworking and not asking for help when needed. I’ve learned that my team is there to support me and jump in if necessary.
I now delegate more effectively so that together we can accomplish my professional ambitions. My advice to other women facing similar challenges is simple: Don’t be afraid to ask for help, and take more time for self-care! It’s not a sign of weakness but a necessary step toward achieving your goals successfully.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR INDUSTRY'S CURRENT TRENDS.
There are so many fun trends right now! Fine dining experiences are becoming more creative and immersive, and dishes are designed to be multisensory adventures. We thrive on open communication and maintain a high level of professional conduct in everything we do. This dedication ensures that every event we cater is executed flawlessly, leaving our clients and their guests with lasting memories.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE OFF WORK?
I love spending time with my rescue pugs and foster pugs. It brings me so much joy! I also love spending time with my husband on a getaway in the mountains or the desert. Soaking up the beautiful South Bay weather with a day by the pool while sharing laughs with friends is also a must. It’s those moments of relaxation and connection that remind me what life is all about!
HOW HAS THE SOUTH BAY COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTED TO YOUR BUSINESS?
Community is the heart of my business. Our client base is mainly built on word-of-mouth referrals from my amazing clients who share their experiences with their communities and by default expand my community. The unwavering support from my friends and family who have stood by me since the beginning has been invaluable. Community is what drives us and allows us to continue creating memorable experiences for our clients.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
We are excited about the new projects we are working! Our new sub-brand, LUXE by The Inspired Palate, will present a Michelinstar experience at your dining table. I can’t wait to be at the forefront of creating some of the most beautiful and unforgettable culinary setups the South Bay has ever seen.
KIM LAPIN
Owner/Principal Designer, Kim Lapin Interiors
Kim Lapin Interiors is a full-service interior design firm founded by Kim Lapin in 2020. Kim majored in history at UCLA. After modeling and acting for more than a decade, she transitioned to the design industry seven years ago.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN YOUR FIELD?
I was modeling and acting for 11 years before I pursued my career in interior design. I learned a lot about beauty, aesthetics and fashion and how to incorporate those into your environment. I was on beautiful sets and saw gorgeous homes and locations that used interior architecture masterfully. It made me fall more in love with interior design. My dad and brother are also general contractors, so I’ve been around renovations and home-building since I was little. When we bought our first home 10 years ago, we updated one of the bathrooms and sold it within a year. We did that seven times with seven different homes as passion projects, and the renovations got bigger and bigger until we were doing full-gut renovations. I gained a lot of experience and know-how about the renovation process and design, but I didn’t realize I could make a career of it since my formal education was not in that field. What inspired me to pursue this career was having my daughter. Having a child showed me how tough I was and that I could do anything I put my mind to.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN MARKET?
Having worked in fashion, I have a distinct sense of style. Fashion translates so much to interior design. You can tell a lot about someone’s design sense in interiors when you see how they like to dress. My experience in fashion gives me an edge on the quality of design I put out.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
A client who trusts the process and is excited and open to creating a layered home that has quality materials throughout. It’s also essential that clients want what I offer. If they don’t love my completed projects, chances are they won’t be on board with the design elements I pitch them because our aesthetics might not line up. I only work with clients who love what I do because that creates the most successful and inspired projects. Otherwise it’s hard for both parties, and design should be fun!
DO YOU WORK REMOTELY?
Yes. Design can be done from anywhere, and Zoom meetings have made it easy to connect and go over the design plans while in
different cities or states. I love working with clients from afar and turning their house into their dream home. It’s easier than it seems. People book me for consultations through TALD.co. It’s a breeze!
WHAT STRUGGLES HAVE YOU FACED IN YOUR PROFESSION?
There is a lot of competition in this industry, just like in my previous industries of modeling and acting. People are always sizing themselves up against each other. I think my superpower is being able to put blinders on and focus on my business. I truly don’t care what others are doing. I believe in what I have built and am building. I was an athlete in college, so competition doesn’t bother me. It fuels me.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
We are about to start construction on a special project in Rolling Hills that will be truly one of a kind. With full ocean views and a truly stunning landscape, this home will be so special. I can’t wait to share it! We’re breaking ground in November, and the project will take about 18 months. Think European craftsmanship meets the ease of West Coast living.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES AUTHENTICITY PLAY INTO YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
I pride myself on being authentic and genuine. It’s the only way I know how to be. In this industry, people can get a little big for their britches and treat their staff and even vendors and clients poorly. I don’t understand that. It’s so vital to be kind, compassionate, easygoing and dare I say fun to be around as a designer! I treat every project as a blessing, and that impacts my business model because I put clients first and make sure they feel important, heard and special … because they are.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THE COMMUNITY TO YOUR BUSINESS.
The impact the community has had on my business is immense, mostly because the clients I take on typically tend to be word of mouth or a referral from someone I know. I typically only take on four or five projects at a time, so it’s very important for both the client and me that we are on the same page from the start and have the same goals in mind. Our community is a huge part of that because if I do a great job for someone locally, they are going to naturally want to tell others about me. I take a lot of pride in the way I run projects and treat people, and I know that everything comes back around. The community is essential in running a successful business.
MOLLY BIDMAN
Owner, Family First Nannies
Family First Nannies is a nanny placement agency that works with clients to find the right fit for their family. Using a multipoint screening process, owner Molly Bidman ensures that only top-quality, qualified candidates make it to the final round of interviews. As a mom and a former nanny for more than a decade, Molly’s goal is to help other new parents who are overwhelmed with the search for in-home child care. She started Family First Nannies in 2023.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
We offer nanny placement services ranging from full-service to basic. We help families that are overwhelmed by the search. Parenting is already a busy job, and adding trying to find a nanny— knowing what questions to ask, how to verify their experience, what really matters when finding the right fit—can be a lot. We are here to make the search stress-free.
HOW DID YOUR BACKGROUND LEAD TO THE OPENING OF FAMILY FIRST NANNIES?
I grew up in Wisconsin and graduated with bachelor’s degrees in music and Spanish education. After working in public education for a couple of years, I moved to California and began working as a nanny. My husband and I welcomed our son in 2022, and the dream to expand our community and help other new parents find support was born with Family First Nannies.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
I have always loved children, since I was a little girl. I always dreamed of working with kids, having my own children and finding ways to support children in the community. Education and nannying was a very natural path for me to take. Operating Family First Nannies builds on that passion while allowing me to connect with the larger community.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR MARKET?
Having the experience in education—as a nanny and as a mom— gives me a distinct perspective on the nanny search. I know what questions to ask families, what questions to ask nannies and how to find the sweet spot with personalities to make sure everyone is happy. Having grown up in a small Midwest town, I have a deep love of community. Growing that community through ongoing connections with families and nannies is very important to me.
MULTITASK OR SINGLE FOCUS?
I’m a mom, so multitasking is a mandatory job description! I thrive when I am busy and have loved launching this agency with my son by my side.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY TO YOUR BUSINESS.
Community is everything to our family. Having no personal family in California, we have had to build our community. Family First Nannies was imagined around growing that community even more. There is nothing greater in life than the connections we make with others, and I look forward to expanding those connections as this business and our own family grows in the South Bay.
WHAT WORDS OF WISDOM DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS?
It is no secret that there are dozens of other nanny placement agencies in Los Angeles. Breaking into the agency world has been a fun challenge! I have tried to focus on staying small and connecting with my clients and nannies to give a truly boutique experience throughout the entire process. I would tell other women looking to start their own businesses to keep pushing forward. There are highs and lows, and it takes time to truly build a network of clients. But the connections you make are worth it, and if you have the passion to keep showing up, the growth will happen!
IN WHAT WAYS DOES AUTHENTICITY PLAY INTO YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
Having a little one at home allows me to truly understand the day-to-day needs of my clients. Add to that my experience as an educator and nanny with children of all ages, and it allows me to bring real-life experiences to the nanny placement process. I’m not just listening to what you need—I understand it.
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
I could not have done this without the support of my husband and the examples that our parents have set for us. Hard work was something I learned early on in life as my mother went back to school to pursue a career in medicine with four kids at home and my father working as a teacher. They taught us that truly anything is possible if you are willing to put in the work to make your dreams a reality.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
I met my husband in 2014, we were married in 2019 and welcomed our yellow lab, Freja, and our son, Jensen, in 2022. We have lived in the South Bay since 2014 and have truly fallen in love with this area! We met in the South Bay and have stayed here ever since. We love to get out and explore the community as a family, but with a 2-year-old puppy and little boy, most of our time is spent at Polliwog Park and the Green Belt.

WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY THAT YOU’RE LOVING?
I love regenerative treatments—procedures that aim to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and promote the regeneration of skin, tissue and cells. Think of it as your body’s ability to repair and rejuvenate itself. Some examples of regenerative treatments are platelet-rich plasma, exosomes, growth factors and microneedling.
HOW DOES COMMUNITY IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS.
Community plays a vital role in the success and growth of any business. I have been fortunate enough to live and work in Manhattan Beach for many years. Building relationships with clients and local businesses in the community has had a significant impact on the growth of BEAM. The South Bay is a special place!
HOW IS YOUR COMPANY LEADING THE WAY WITH WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY?
As a small business, I’m proud to say that BEAM is owned and operated by a team of women. As the founder, I actively strive to create a work environment where the women around me are empowered to excel and advance in their careers.
HOW DO YOU SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN IN BUSINESS?
Supporting women in business has always been important to me, even long before I became a business owner myself. I come from a long line of entrepreneurial women, as both of my grandmothers owned small businesses at a time when most women did not work. So when I hear about other women in business, I want to learn about the founder and her story and discover ways in which I can support the business. Every purchase, referral, word of mouth, like and comment on social media matters and makes a difference.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
It’s interesting that in my professional life I am surrounded by female energy, while at home I’m surrounded by male energy with my husband and two sons. It’s a great balance! I’ve been married to my husband for 17 years, and our energetic sons keep us busy. Having a supportive partner who believes in your goals and vision can make a significant difference for a woman in business.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
Someone who is invested in their daily skin routine and comes in for routine in-office treatments, preferring a natural aesthetic. They understand that a healthy lifestyle is an essential part of healthy skin, and they aren’t afraid to prioritize self-care.
WHAT STRUGGLES HAVE YOU FACED IN YOUR WORK?
I have faced many struggles, such as overcoming self-doubt and balancing work-life responsibilities as a wife and a mom. For other women facing similar challenges: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Trust your abilities, and don’t let self-doubt hold you back from something you’re meant to do. I love my family, and the hardest thing about being a working mom is not always being available. I have learned to lean in to the simple everyday moments together because those are the ones that will last forever.

I have a niche market working with international clients and sports professionals. I use a relationship-oriented approach and strive to build inclusive client experiences that resonate with those seeking respectful service.
HOW DOES AUTHENTICITY IMPACT YOUR WORK?

critical decisions regarding their money, which can be emotional and impactful. It leads to stronger relationships that are built on mutual respect and integrity.
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Billions of dollars of investment capital flow through the sports landscape, driving expansion and acquisition. We see trends like:
• Record team franchise valuations for both major and emerging leagues.
The fractionalization of media rights with streaming contributing to record sales.
• Explosive growth in women’s sports.
Major sports agencies well capitalized by private equity firms seeking to acquire small and mid-sized competitors.
• Athletes generating more revenue from business outside the game than playing contracts, and this starting at much younger ages.
• Ownership groups investing in mixed-use real estate and ancillary businesses to create entertainment centers in and around team facilities.
In my position, I keep a lens on all areas of the sports ecosystem to ensure I can make informed and actionable recommendations. Through my years of experience, I am able to leverage my network and make meaningful introductions that take into account not only matching businesses but also personalities for the best possible strategic outcome.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE COMMUNITY TO YOUR WORK?
It not only shapes my growth, but it provides a foundation for my success. It goes back to building trust and reputation. Being a visible member of my community builds stronger relationships. It allows me to meet my neighbors and build more meaningful connections. Supporting the communities I live in is important to me, as we all rise together and have shared experiences and resources. We can learn a lot from our communities and get great feedback and create a greater impact. We can inspire trust through authentic connections.
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
It started at home with my mom and dad. They are forever mentors and cheerleaders for me. I get the best personal and life/work advice from them, as it’s from the heart and unapologetic. I have had clients who have become mentors, sports coaches, managers, employees and professional business coaches. Every stage of my career has been so different, and every time I have been comfortable, I’ve known that it was time to get uncomfortable again because it was time to grow. That is the only way to evolve and get ahead. Taking risks is necessary but worth it, and having those role models and mentors helps you push further and dig deeper.
DR.
JACQUELINE OLIVIER
Head of School, Rolling Hills Preparatory School
Rolling Hills Preparatory School is an independent middle and high school where students benefit from small classes and a faculty that understands and appreciates varying learning styles. Dr. Jacqueline Olivier joined Rolling Hills Prep in 2019 as an educational consultant and became head of school this year. She has worked in education for three decades. In 2017 she founded Blue Marble Learning and Consulting.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL.
Rolling Hills Prep (RHP) is an independent college prep middle and high school. Our mission states our commitment to high expectations for students with unparalleled student support. The faculty, leadership team and administrative team are top-tier professionals with extensive experience, as well as training in the Universal Design for Learning. Our families are supportive, positive and wonderful partners in educating our students—the next generation of leaders. For a relatively small school, our boys’ and girls’ sports teams are stellar; one big boast is having a Division I basketball team that ranked 12th in Southern California last year.
WHAT SETS ROLLING HILLS PREP APART FROM OTHER LOCAL SCHOOLS?
RHP is an accredited independent school, which means it is a nonprofit school run by a board of trustees. Our model is unique in that we offer three levels of support for students with varying needs. For example, one of our current seniors is taking three AP classes in the math/computer science arena yet struggles with writing. That student has a dedicated support teacher for one of their classes for writing support. Other students benefit from support blocks if they have extensive after-school commitments or if they have a learning profile that makes learning difficult in a large, uniformly paced classed.
IN
WHAT WAYS DO YOU
STAND OUT IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION?
The ways I personally stand out in the independent school leadership arena are the breadth of my experience, my education and my philosophy toward children and education. Besides holding senior leadership positions in several independent schools, I founded a school, placed heads in schools through conducting executive searches, worked with boards and chaired accreditation committees—all of which adds to my repertoire of best practices in crafting a Tier 1 school community at RHP. Philosophically, I continually examine educational trends and ask myself what qualities and experiences are most important for future success and independence at the college level and beyond. The world is changing so fast for the job market, families and
students; what do they really need to be learning outside traditional coursework?
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR?
It is my goal that RHP will be known throughout the country as the top school for college-bound students who might need extra academic support. With support in whatever subjects they may need or with executive functioning or organizational skills, students can access honors and AP classes so that they can dream their biggest dreams and be accepted to the college of their choice.
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN EDUCATION?
One that I continue to be curious about is the use of AI in education and in the classroom. AI isn’t going anywhere, so how do we harness its power in the most appropriate and forward-thinking way at the high school level? Our academic leadership team just finished a retreat in which AI was the primary topic; it’s the intention of RHP to stay ahead of technology trends and use technology and AI as a tool to aid learning.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM STUDENT.
Any student who deep inside has a dream that they want to dare to dream. At RHP we love students who, from past school experiences, feel they aren’t strong learners or students. These students shed that baggage and raise their grades significantly, and that raises their self-esteem and self-knowledge.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY ON ROLLING HILLS PREP.
The theme this 2024–2025 school year at RHP is, in fact, “community.” When families and students feel supported, included, appreciated and important, they thrive and want to be at the school, take part in events and meet others. Every member of our school community—from student to teacher, caregiver and grandparent—is a vital member of our Husky family. I encourage each of them to attend our many school events and sports games and become part of our Family Association.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
Mine and my husband’s passion projects are our horses—training them, training with them, and making sure they are healthy and living their best lives. We are the owners of the Lomita Feed Store, run by Bill, my husband, so we are immersed in the horse community on the Peninsula. Our horses are at two wonderful local clubs, the Empty Saddle Club and the Pony Club. Our human kids are out of the house, and our small herd of horses has trotted in to take over!
BRIEANNA CUNNINGHAM & NIKALA CUNNINGHAM
C&C Partners Design Build | Análú Studios
Sisters Brieanna Cunningham and Nikala Cunningham were both born and raised in Redondo Beach. Brieanna studied architecture at Washington State University and worked for a Los Angeles architecture firm for five years before joining the family design-build company, C&C Partners, as a junior partner in 2018. Nikala experienced her first Pilates class while attending Emerson College, and that developed into her passion for wellness and self-care. In 2023 she founded Análú Studios, where she and her team teach a variety of Pilates classes.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK.
Brieanna: C&C Partners Design-Build was founded in 1987 by brothers Patrick Cunningham—my father—and Michael Cunningham. From the conception of inspirational images to physically building the project and handing over the keys, we assist you every step of the way! We are your custom home concierge.
Nikala: Análú is a boutique classical Pilates and wellness studio. Our intention is simple: to provide a space for you to fully immerse yourself in an environment where you can prioritize your health and wellness.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOUR BUSINESSES STAND OUT?
Brieanna: There are numerous architecture and construction firms in the South Bay, but there aren’t many design-build firms with both licensed architects and general contractors in-house. At C&C Partners, we have a unique approach to how we structure our process and projects.
Nikala: Análú is boutique for a reason. We wanted to create a space that allows clients to feel serene and attended to, whether they are moving during a Pilates class or connecting with their inner self during a sound bath. I’ve always loved learning about overall wellness—from natural remedies and the importance of physical and mental health. We have many aspirations of what we will offer at Análú as time goes on!
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
Brieanna: A few people. My mentor Ignacio Rodriguez of IR Architects for teaching me the ins and outs of an architectural firm. My whole team at C&C—we learn from each other every single day. And my parents for raising us to be leaders.
Nikala: The talented Leigh McLaughlin was my first Pilates mentor. She taught me how to work with clients, stressed what a blessing it is to move our bodies and enforced that instructors are students for life. I owe my business success to our parents. They always advised that when you find your passion, do something with it and create something wonderful that you can share with others and love what you do every day.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY.
Brieanna: Although our industry is competitive, there are plenty of projects in the South Bay. We collaborate and consult with other architects and general contractors throughout each year. More than half of the projects we are fortunate to build come from referrals. Word-of-mouth within our community is our greatest reward for future projects!
Nikala: Análú wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our community. Clients are usually by word-of-mouth. Clients will bring friends and family, they make friends during classes and it becomes social hour! I have made many new friendships with wonderful people I never would have met otherwise—and it brings me so much joy when I see them every week. They keep me motivated.
HOW ARE YOUR COMPANIES LEADING THE WAY WITH WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY?
Brieanna: While women make up a small percentage of architecture and construction roles overall, women make up more than half of C&C’s office-based staff and all of our project managers are awesome, talented, powerful women.
Nikala: We are a women-owned company, and all of our instructors are amazing women guiding other incredible women (and men) who seek a healthy lifestyle
HOW CAN WE SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN IN BUSINESS?
Brieanna: Be open to collaboration, even if you share the same industry. There are ways to do it noncompetitively and have a fun, successful outcome for more exposure to your business.
Nikala: Learn from other women in your industry. We all have our learning curves, and sharing our experiences only helps broaden our sense of purpose
TELL US ABOUT THE SOUTH BAY WOMEN WHO INSPIRE YOU.
Brieanna: Christine Vroom with Christine Vroom Interiors. Her overall determination and precise attention to detail are so admirable. And my sister, my soulmate, Nikala—the most impressive little sister to look up to, who has taught me that a five-year age gap means absolutely nothing.
Nikala: I’ve been fortunate to know Holly Kauffman with Perfect Family Homes for 15+ years. She was the manager of our club soccer team, and she’s an empowering businesswoman and an awesome mom. And my big sissy, Brieanna! I’d be nothing without her, and Análú would not be what it is without her. She is my guiding light in life. She is the reason I work so hard, and I hope to be half the woman that she is one day.

EMILY LUXFORD
Owner, Luxford Nutrition
Established by dietitian Emily Luxford in 2014, Luxford Nutrition is dedicated to improving health through dietary awareness. Emily helps clients use food as a tool to improve quality of life, promote a healthy gut, and manage inflammatory autoimmune diseases. She was voted a 2024 “South Bay’s Favorite” nutritionist in the Daily Breeze and The Beach Reporter
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND IN NUTRITION.
My nutrition education, work experience and volunteer work in the community have equipped me to offer superior dietetic services. I am a registered dietitian nutritionist, integrative and functional nutrition-certified practitioner, and certified LEAP therapist with a master’s degree in nutritional science. I have worked as a credentialed elementary school teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District and also taught nutrition at California State University, Long Beach.
I completed my dietetic clinical internship at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. Over the 14 years that I’ve worked in the industry, I have provided individualized nutrition therapy at various hospitals and clinics. I developed and published research regarding dietary modification for patients with Ménière’s disease and served on the board of directors for the Celiac Disease Foundation from 2014 to 2020.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
As a young adult, I was diagnosed with celiac disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis—both are autoimmune conditions. These diagnoses taught me the role of nutrition as a health intervention. This personal experience led me to a career in dietetics and additional credentials in integrative and functional nutrition therapy.
WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?
I provide nutrition counseling for digestive distress, autoimmune solutions, women’s health, chronic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety and mood swings, inflammation, IBS and general health.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
Nurturing the gut at an early age can help with the trajectory of a person’s health status. My current passion project is to educate families so they may support their children’s gut integrity and have a positive impact on their overall long-term health.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR MARKET?
Experience has taught me that research and medical expertise can resolve health issues when the practitioner listens to the patient. Only the patient knows what she is feeling or experiencing. I implement a plan that addresses each patient's symptoms and is
conducive to her lifestyle, current health status and health goals. This ability to dedicate time to each patient is due to the structure of my practice. Your voice will be heard at Luxford Nutrition.
HOW DOES AUTHENTICITY IMPACT YOUR WORK?
As a health professional, I believe it is integral to live the lifestyle you preach to others. I believe in a “whole food as medicine” approach to health. This is the cornerstone that safeguards my family’s health and allows my patients to thrive.
TELL US ABOUT A CURRENT TREND IN YOUR INDUSTRY.
Artificial intelligence is making a strong push into the medical field including dietetic practice. While AI has potential, I still believe there is no replacement for direct interaction with a boardcertified dietitian and the personal connections that promote positive health outcomes.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
My dream client is someone who will match my level of dedication and desire to achieve results. They are motivated to make the changes needed to improve their health and are willing to put in the work to get there. Lifestyle changes can be difficult to implement, but with support from a dietitian and a willingness to drive toward one’s goals, anything is possible!
HOW OFTEN ARE YOU ON THE ROAD FOR WORK?
I attend several conferences a year to keep up to date on the latest research and trends. This continued education helps me help you!
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
When I started my practice 10 years ago, many in the industry were not supportive of virtual care for dietitian services. However, my female clients expressed a need. Juggling work, family and personal care often meant that my clients prioritized themselves last. Their feedback added to my success. It prompted me to design a patient-centered practice that offers virtual and in-person sessions Luxford Nutrition is health care when and where you need it.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM.
As an integrative and functional practitioner, I value an interdisciplinary approach to wellness. Food may be the foundation of health, but other specialties also play a role in preventing disease and managing symptoms. I surround myself with other professionals who can help support clients on their health journey including psychologists, therapists, acupuncturists, physical therapists and a variety of physicians. Together, we can help you feel your best.
FIONA FLEMING
Owner, Patrick Molloy’s
Patrick Molloy’s is an Irish restaurant and sports pub founded nearly three decades ago in the heart of Hermosa Beach Pier Plaza. Owner/operator Fiona Fleming took the helm in 2021 and has worked in hospitality for more than 15 years.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
Patrick Molloy’s is a place to gather, share stories, have a few laughs and feel the comfort of home. Our mission is to celebrate the Irish tradition but with a modern twist and offerings from innovative cocktails to classic pub fare, sports and lively entertainment.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN YOUR FIELD?
As I reflect on what inspired me to pursue a career as the CEO of this restaurant, I’m reminded of the serendipitous moment when the opportunity presented itself at a professional crossroads in my career. It was the summer of 2021, and I was at a point where I was eager to take on a new challenge that would allow me to merge my passion for Irish hospitality with my professional background in operations. Looking back, I believe that the business and I both needed each other at that moment. The restaurant, an institution in the South Bay, needed revitalization, and I was drawn to the prospect of being at the helm of its rebirth. For me, the decision to go “all in” was not just about assuming a leadership position; it was about the chance to breathe new life into an establishment that had been a beloved fixture in the community for so many years. I saw an opportunity to leverage my operational expertise to drive growth and innovation while tapping in to my creative side to craft unique experiences that would resonate with our customers.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR MARKET?
Our industry requires constant adaptation to food and beverage trends as well as perfecting the classics. We love creating one-ofa-kind culinary delights like our Frozen Irish Coffee, for example. We spent the better part of a year perfecting this recipe before launching it. It has been so well received and we are proud to offer this special cocktail. It serves as a testament to the dedication we have to the research and development of our offerings. What sets us apart from other restaurants is our willingness to take risks and push the boundaries of what’s possible. We’re not afraid to try new things and experiment with different flavors and techniques—even if it means investing significant time and resources into the process.
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY THAT YOU’RE LOVING?
We love—and we have to laugh at—some of the social media
trends that we are seeing across all industries but specifically for restaurants/cocktail bars. Incorporating humor into our brand is something we feel strongly about, so we have been having a lot of fun creating content that can bring exploration, intrigue and a good laugh into the mix. Beyond social media, the culinary experience is constantly evolving. There seems to be a lot of cohesion between food and cocktails and the infusion of the two to create new flavor profiles. It’s been fun to see what my partner Kevin Jones comes up with when creating specialty cocktails and infusions for our menu.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY TO YOUR BUSINESS.
Community engagement is one of the most important aspects of being in the restaurant business. We feel fortunate to partner with the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce as a major partner and resource for community involvement. HERmosa Circle is another great example of women leaders whom we have collaborated with for many networking events. Our strong relationships with both have led to attracting new and loyal customers and increasing our brand visibility. We also have a ton of fun collaborating with these organizations.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES AUTHENTICITY PLAY INTO YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
At our traditional Irish pub, authenticity is at the heart of everything we do. From our carefully crafted menu featuring classic Irish dishes to our expertly mixed cocktails, we strive to create an immersive experience that transports our guests to a cozy but lively pub in Ireland. It’s also about the people who bring our pub to life. We empower our employees to be their genuine selves, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere that makes our guests feel like part of the family. By staying true to our roots and embracing individuality, we’ve built a loyal following of customers who appreciate the real deal.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND TEAM.
My family is everything to me, and I’m grateful to have them as my biggest supporters. My dad, being from Ireland, serves as a great resource and helps ensure that we stay true to our Irish heritage here at Molloy’s.
I’m also incredibly proud of the team we’ve built here. They bring their unique perspectives and energy to work every day and are instrumental in creating the warm and welcoming experience that our customers have come to expect from us. I feel lucky to have such a wonderful team behind me, and I think that sense of family and camaraderie sets us apart.
PAIGE NEGRETE
Owner, South Bay Sprouts Gymnastics
South Bay Sprouts initially started as an in-home mobile gymnastics program in 2020 with one goal: to grow kids through movement. Owner Paige Negrete’s goal was to encourage students to get outside, be active and always embrace a challenge. Since then, the business has expanded into its own studio space in Redondo Beach and partners with local schools, day care centers, and parks and recreation programs. Classes are geared toward ages 2½ to 12, with private and group lessons available.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
At South Bay Sprouts, we’re all about bringing the joy of movement directly to the community. We offer fun, engaging, positive gymnastics classes throughout the Beach Cities. Our programs focus on building confidence, coordination and a love for physical activity in a safe and encouraging environment. We believe in creating a supportive space for gymnasts of all skill levels, where every child feels like a star.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT?
From the beginning, we have taken a “small-batch” approach that allows us to truly understand and accommodate the needs of every gymnast. I am very excited to be offering new classes through the Manhattan Beach and El Segundo parks and recreation departments that will include adaptive gymnastics. We can’t wait to cartwheel with all our kiddos this school year.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
Our dream client is excited about creating lasting memories for their child through the magic of gymnastics. They are families who value a community where fun, growth and creativity come together. They believe in the power of movement to build confidence and joy in a child’s life and are looking for a gymnastics program that’s more than just skill-building. They want a positive, supportive environment where their kids can thrive and make new friends.
HOW HAS THE COMMUNITY IMPACTED YOUR WORK?
The encouragement from the community has been vital to our success and fuels our passion to give back. From the amazing families who cheer us on to the local parks that host our programs, community involvement has helped us thrive. They not only make our offerings possible, they are what makes them shine. We’re lucky to be a part of it all!
WHAT CAN WE DO TO SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN?
Actively promoting their work, sharing their business with your network, writing a review or recommending services. Encouragement
and genuine connections go a long way. We should celebrate each other’s success because those wins are shared victories for all of us.
MULTITASK OR SINGLE FOCUS?
Definitely multitask! With our program growing and expanding in so many new directions, we constantly balance different tasks to bring the joy of gymnastics to as many kids as possible. Whether it’s coordinating with parks, setting up new classes or working to develop our amazing team, we’re always on the move—literally and figuratively. It’s all about making sure that our impact is as positive and widespread as we can manage.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
Joining the Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce has been a highlight of my year and has become my most recent passion project. As a part of the Young & Emerging Professionals committee, I get to help create a space where fearless leaders can learn and grow together. It’s so rewarding to see people connect, share ideas and inspire each other. I love being part of an effort that supports the future of our wonderful Manhattan Beach community.
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
I credit so much of my professional success to the incredible moms who have uplifted me from the start. Chloé Trebilco’s belief in my vision was so strong that she spread the word about my on-site instruction before I even had an official offerings list. Shef Rao generously hosted about 100 classes in her yard before we had a studio space. And Dana Moncrief’s constant encouragement and support have made every part of this journey more lighthearted and fun. Their trust, support and word of mouth have been invaluable in helping me grow the business and shape a dream into reality.
ANY TRAVEL TIPS FOR OUT-OF-TOWN WORK?
This summer I traveled to present at various gymnastics retreats and conventions. My best tip is to pack a little extra patience along with your clothes—you never know when you’ll need it! And don’t forget to enjoy the journey by grabbing a local coffee or trying a new workout spot. I love going to Barry’s in all the different cities.
HOW IMPORTANT IS A POSITIVE OUTLOOK?
Maintaining a positive outlook has been essential in navigating the ups and downs of my business journey. It’s helped me face setbacks with resilience and see every challenge as a chance to learn and grow. This mindset has kept me motivated and allowed me to embrace each success with true gratitude. Despite the tough moments, this positivity has made the journey both meaningful and rewarding.

My goal is to make each transaction smooth and successful, whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned investor.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN THE REAL ESTATE MARKET?
As a Realtor in the South Bay, particularly in Palos Verdes, it is very important to have a combination of local expertise, exceptional service and innovative marketing strategies. Living in the same community for over three decades has given me unparalleled knowledge of the area—from its schools, parks and neighborhoods to local businesses and hidden gems. I offer insights that go beyond stats and listings, providing clients with a complete picture of the lifestyle. I have witnessed real estate trends and changes over the years, which allows me to have long-term perspectives on property values and community development that newer agents may not have.
WHY DID YOU JOIN COMPASS?
I decided to join Compass because their innovative approach to real estate really resonated with me. Compass provides advanced technology tools and a supportive network that enables me to serve my clients with greater efficiency and personalization. Their marketing platform in particular is top-notch, allowing me to better showcase properties and reach more targeted buyers, especially in a competitive market like Palos Verdes. Moving to Compass was a strategic decision to align myself with a brokerage that offered more local tools while allowing me the freedom to focus on what I love most: helping clients find their perfect homes.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU
TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
After spending most of my adult life in sales of some sort, I reached a point where I wanted to focus on something that truly excited me. Real estate has always been a passion of mine, and
I felt the timing was perfect for me to dive into this fascinating second career. I could combine my knowledge of the community, my experiences of raising a family here and my deep understanding of what makes a house a home. It felt like the right time to start a new chapter.
Entering real estate wasn’t just about selling homes. It was also about helping people achieve their dreams and making a meaningful impact on my community. I wanted to offer something unique: a local Realtor with the wisdom of life experiences, the energy of a fresh start and a deep passion for connecting people with their dream homes.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES AUTHENTICITY PLAY A ROLE IN YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
Authenticity plays a crucial role in my success as a Realtor, especially in a relationship-driven industry like real estate. Having my clients’ trust is most important. Being authentic helps your clients feel they can trust you to give them honest advice about the market, properties and any potential challenges. That trust is priceless and is key to forming long-term relationships. Authenticity ensures that you are straightforward about pricing, negotiations and expectations. This can be especially reassuring for buyers and sellers who are making major financial decisions.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS COMMUNITY?
I have a deep, personal understanding of what makes Palos Verdes truly special. I’ve seen firsthand how the neighborhoods have grown and changed, and I know the hidden gems, the best schools and the local businesses that shape the area. My long-term connections to both the community and to my friendships allow me to offer clients insights and go beyond just the real estate market. I can share the full experience of what it’s like to live here. This isn’t just a place I work. It’s my home, where I married and where I raised my children. Whether you’re new to the area or have been here for years, I am committed to helping you find the perfect home that fits your lifestyle because I know what it means to build a life here.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
We’ve built a beautiful life in this community. Palos Verdes has been a backdrop for so many of our family’s memories—watching our children grow, attending local schools and enjoying everything the South Bay has to offer. My family and I have a deep connection to Palos Verdes, and it’s incredible to see it evolve over the years. That sense of community and family is something I bring into my work every day, helping others find a place where they can build their own lasting memories.
JENNIFER HUYNH,
DMD, MPH, MS Owner, Jenuine Smiles Orthodontics
Jennifer Huynh, DMD, and her team at Jenuine Smiles Orthodontics specialize in orthodontic care for children, teens and adults. Dr. Jen was a premedical student in Philadelphia when she witnessed the multidisciplinary treatment of a child’s cleft lip and palate involving an orthodontic specialist. She knew then that she had found her calling and soon after transitioned to the field of orthodontics.
Dr. Jen earned her master’s degree in health sciences from Drexel University, a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry as well as a Master of Public Health from the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, and completed her postgraduate advanced education in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at New York University. She started Jenuine Smiles Orthodontics in 2023.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE.
I consider myself a lifelong student and am dedicated to learning the latest cutting-edge orthodontic technology, products and research. I specialize in orthodontic care for kids, teens and adults using a variety of treatment modalities including Invisalign® clear aligners, metal and clear braces, and 3D digital scans to treat mild to complex cases. Patients have different needs; therefore, I enjoy being a small private practice where I have the time to connect with every patient and treat each one as a person deserving undivided attention and compassion.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN DENTISTRY?
My mom’s physical and emotional struggle with her TMJ jaw disorder inspired me to pursue a career in dentistry. As Vietnamese refugees in the 1980s, my grandparents did not have the financial means to fix her disorder. As I grew up, I watched my mom struggle to eat and chew her food, which affected her quality of life. While I was doing an internship with the craniofacial team at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, I witnessed an orthodontist help correct a child’s jaw and teeth after a cleft lip and palate surgery. This moment solidified my career pursuit in orthodontics.
HOW DID YOU CHOOSE THE BUSINESS NAME JENUINE SMILES?
My first name is Jennifer, but most of my friends call me Jen. My husband’s last name is Nguyen, and most people pronounce it “New-In.” So together it’s “Jen-New-In.” Beyond the name, the vision of Jenuine Smiles Orthodontics stemmed from my graduation project at NYU. We were to create a business proposal to be pitched to a panel of investors. Little did I know that what was a simple assignment would become my reality!
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE NEW PATIENTS TO KNOW ABOUT THE ATMOSPHERE AT JENUINE SMILES ORTHODONTICS?
I have an uncanny ability to break an awkward silence in any room and crack a smile from even the shiest person. My team and I are committed to providing a comfortable and enjoyable treatment experience in a sophisticated and fun environment. We are not only committed to creating beautiful smiles, but we strive to create an environment that encourages, motivates and improves the lives of our patients and families.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND TEAM.
My team has truly become like family. They have been with the practice for over five years—even before I came on board. When I took over the practice in January 2023, the business side of a dental office was very new to me and it was quite overwhelming. My brother Henry had worked in the restaurant business for over 10 years and saw an opportunity for a career change when I told him about my new venture. He had no medical or dental background but took on the challenge of being the office manager/ insurance and treatment coordinator. Our patients have come to really relate to him and are impressed with his communication skills and compassionate demeanor.
My husband is a general dentist in El Segundo. One of the perks of having a partner in the same profession is that I can collaborate and discuss multidisciplinary treatment plans with him. We have been together for over 12 years and will be welcoming our first child early next year!
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR
MARKET?
When you walk into our practice, you will always be greeted by your first name. The traditional family practice is few and far between these days. I strive to maintain the vibe where patients do not feel rushed and leave with a greater understanding of their oral health. Each patient is treated as an individual because I believe that a person is connected to a family and that this family is connected to the community. We are all here to do good in our community.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN THIS COMMUNITY?
I’m originally from the Philadelphia area, and I moved to Los Angeles in July 2020 to join my husband, who is a SoCal native. After exploring different cities in the L.A. area, we both fell in love with the South Bay community. We currently reside in Redondo Beach and have lived here since 2021.
STEPHANIE CORTNER
Owner, Root&Branch Wellness
Stephanie Cortner is a functionally trained Eastern medicine practitioner. She combines functional lab testing with herbal medicine formulas to focus on hormone balancing, fertility, autoimmune disease and GI health for a more comprehensive look at her clients’ health goals. Stephanie is also an acupuncturist for local sports teams. She is supported by a team of practitioners with a wide range of skill sets within Root&Branch Wellness, which she founded in 2014.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS AND THE SERVICES YOU OFFER.
I offer functional lab testing to get a comprehensive look at the root of each individual’s disharmony and support their path to healing with lifestyle modifications, nutrition, targeted herbal formulas and medicine-grade supplements. Some of the tests I run look at the microbiome or digestive health through GI mapping. Another test I run frequently is a comprehensive hormone test that will identify hormone imbalances by measuring sex and adrenal hormones, melatonin and their metabolites. My primary focus at Root&Branch is on women’s health with a lens on how to support gynecological disorders, including PCOS, painful periods, endometriosis, fertility, and the transition from perimenopause to menopause.
My other love is acupuncture, which is a great addition to hormone balancing. I have found that complementing my treatments with functional labs allows us to get to our goal that much faster. While I do focus on women’s health, I also love to treat pain and athletes through a technique of acupuncture called dry needling.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
Our medical system is lacking in treating the root cause of health issues. I initially started my education with the vision of receiving a medical degree in conventional medicine, but after a mentorship working in a hospital, I realized I wanted to treat patients with a different approach. I feel truly grateful that research has advanced in a way that allows practitioners to treat the patient as a whole. It is my lifelong goal to support and advocate for more comprehensive health care options.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT?
Boutique health care gives the practitioner time to sit with the patient and listen in a way that larger or corporate structures are not able to. I also have a unique background in mixing traditional medicine with Western practices, allowing me to understand which route of healing would be best suited for the patient. I discuss with each patient what they are capable of, and together we come up with a protocol that is manageable to make sure their health goals are obtained.
WHAT ARE
THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
Support for perimenopause. Too many women find themselves going through this second puberty without support. There is more and more research surfacing around the ups and downs of hormones through this 10-year transition and its inflammatory cascade—the crucial role of neuroprotective progesterone in the immune system and the effects on our motivation and overall health in testosterone decline. Let’s keep our hormones nourished and support ourselves with self-care!
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
Someone who is invested in their healing journey. Consistency is key to a more natural approach to healing. There are typically lifestyle modifications—nutrition, sleep, exercise, mindfulness—that come with the protocol, and it takes flexibility, showing up for yourself and having an open mind to truly transform your health.
HOW IMPORTANT IS COMMUNITY TO YOUR BUSINESS?
Community is everything, and the South Bay has such a wonderful one. I have built my practice on word of mouth, and I am beyond grateful for my patients and referral partners and how supportive they have been. Research shows how a connected community nourishes our adrenals and, in turn, our emotional and physical health. My patients have become my family, so they are supporting my health as well!
HOW IS YOUR COMPANY LEADING THE WAY WITH WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY?
It was always my dream to open a multidisciplinary wellness center. After growing Root&Branch, I wanted to expand our team to support women’s health. I now co-own Her Integrated Wellness, which consists of many female-owned practitioners collectively supporting women in their healing journey.
DO YOU WORK REMOTELY?
My functional medicine consultations are mostly via telehealth (inperson is also available at the wellness center). I have consulted with patients in Canada and as far away as Spain and Australia. It’s so nice to have that flexibility for me and my patients.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
My family consists of my husband, Jeff, my 2-year-old son, Jun, and my sweet Aussie collie, Roodi. We have one active household! We like to get out into nature as much as possible. We all recalibrate best in the woods or swimming in natural bodies of water. This winter we are looking forward to putting Jun on a snowboard for the first time!
With expertise in tax efficiency, risk management, retirement planning, investment strategy, and wealth preservation and distribution, wealth management advisors Heather Quinn and Barbara Bernstein guide their clients through the complexities of managing their income, optimizing their benefits and realizing a secure financial future.
Both Barbara and Heather worked as producers in the entertainment industry after earning their undergraduate degrees—Barbara from the University of California, Berkeley and Heather from Loyola Marymount University. Barbara transitioned to the financial services industry in 2012 and Heather did the same in 2019.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK.
We work with professionals in various industries providing comprehensive financial planning, including risk management, retirement planning, investment strategy, tax efficiency, and wealth preservation and distribution. We help clients build and follow a road map to a secure financial future.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN FINANCIAL SERVICES?
Both of us came from jobs as entertainment executives. While we maintain a love and appreciation for that industry, we wanted to do work that addressed people’s biggest concerns in life—which are primarily financial. Many people are overwhelmed by financial complexities such as investment management, and even with success in their field, integrating their goals and their finances can be daunting. We enjoy helping people identify their most important goals and devise a road map for getting there.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
Our dream client is busy running a business, and they don’t have the time, desire or bandwidth to tackle the financial planning process on their own. They look to us to form a partnership with trusted advisors.
HOW IS YOUR COMPANY LEADING THE WAY WITH WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY?
You could say it’s leading the way by being in the right place at the right time. Research has shown that women tend to prefer working with other women when seeking financial advice. With an infrastructure that supports the success of financial advisors who are women, Northwestern Mutual is well positioned to be the go-to company for women seeking financial advice as the great wealth transfer occurs and more and more women become breadwinners for their families.
DO YOU TRAVEL FOR WORK?
We have clients all across the country, and luckily technology in 2024 allows us to work with clients wherever they are. When we do travel, it is often for public speaking opportunities and educational events centered around women and their finances.
WHAT
CAN WE EACH DO TO SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN IN BUSINESS?
Be generous with your network and help other women make meaningful connections. Everyone knows women who could benefit from meeting one another. We do this for our clients and other women in our network whenever we feel there is synergy or an opportunity to connect for professional growth.
HOW DOES AUTHENTICITY IMPACT YOUR WORK?
Money matters are incredibly personal, sensitive and often emotional. As advisors, authenticity is critical in helping clients feel comfortable being candid with us. Often what people want to do with their money is not what they should be doing, and we need the courage to have hard conversations and encourage progress.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
We’ve greatly enjoyed hosting a quarterly dinner salon to connect our clients, allowing them to meet other great professionals in a relaxed setting. Guests at the salon share great food, wine and interesting conversation at unique venues throughout Los Angeles.
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY?
We work with clients in different ways and have noticed a trend toward increased interest in fee-based planning, which we love to provide. We find that even if they may have existing advisors in the financial space, people may employ us to bring the disparate pieces together and see their whole financial picture in one place.

Both Mollie and Carol have almost 20 years of experience in financial planning, investment management and client advising
WHAT BUSINESS SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?
We offer no-stone-unturned comprehensive financial planning services to our clients. Using both qualitative and quantitative data to create holistic financial plans, we follow a thorough discovery process to ensure that each plan is customized to the unique needs of the individuals and families in our care.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR MARKET?
Our mission is to help our clients Achieve Financial Peace of Mind™ by allowing them to focus on their goals and dreams while we handle the financial minutia. The result of working with us isn’t just a portfolio, distribution strategy or game plan for moving assets from one generation to the next; it is aligning those various parts into a cohesive strategy that connects our clients’ wealth to their values.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM.
Strategic View Advisors is a veteran team of 18 professionals with a combined 100+ years of experience in the financial services industry. We have a deep bench of intellectual capital with six Retirement Income Certified Professionals, one MBA, three CLUs, one Chartered Financial Analyst, and nine Certified Financial Planners™ (CFP®). For each client that we work with, at least two CFPs are helping craft the plan. We believe that earning your CFP is part of being a good financial steward and is required for the level of service we provide.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY AND THE IMPACT IT HAS ON YOUR BUSINESS.
Our mission statement affirms our commitment to transform the communities in which we live. We hope to accomplish that in part by the financial planning work we do for families, removing financial stress so they are able to spend that energy within their community. Additionally, Strategic View Advisors has a philanthropic arm, SVA CARES, which organizes volunteer opportunities and fundraisers to support community-focused causes including Alzheimer’s prevention, clean beaches, women’s shelters, cancer research and more.
ARE THERE ANY CONSIDERATIONS YOU MAKE WHEN WORKING WITH WOMEN VS. MEN?
For women, there is a perceived barrier to entry into the world of finance. For many years, the sentiment was that women are more risk-averse than men. This turns out not to be true when time is taken to discuss risk on the front end of investment decisions. With an in-depth understanding, women’s risk tolerance increases, and they reap the rewards of making educated financial decisions.
HOW IS YOUR COMPANY LEADING THE WAY WITH WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY?
Our firm is committed to promoting female leadership. Women make up 60% of our advisors, and half of our leadership team is represented by women. This was a conscious decision to ensure the women on our team have strong influence in all aspects of the business. Our voices are heard, promoted and respected.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
We like working with people who want a lifetime financial partnership. Our holistic advice is designed entirely around our clients' goals; as they change and grow, so do their goals. We encourage our clients to reach out to us when they are seeking clarity on anything from purchasing a car to transferring wealth to the next generation. We aim to establish a level of competence and trust that allows our clients to Achieve Financial Peace of Mind™, the driving force behind our mission at Strategic View Advisors.
WHO NEEDS A FINANCIAL ADVISOR?
There's a misconception that you only need an advisor later in life or once you have a certain dollar amount saved. But we strongly believe that everyone should consider working with a financial partner. We work with our clients through marriage, having children, moving, changing jobs, the passing of relatives, inheritances, retirement, caring for aging parents and more. People often wish they had begun working with us earlier in life.

Five Point Five Brewing Co is a family business known for its handcrafted beer and small neighborhood vibe. Siblings Michelle Bella Legaspi, Melissa Bella Montemagni, Joe Bella and Mark Bella run the brewery along with Melissa’s husband, Jeremy Montemagni—who has been brewing since the 1990s—and his sister and brother-in-law, Angela Chagnon and Ted Chagnon. The team opened the doors of Five Point Five Brewing Co last summer.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN A BREWERY?
The love of family and building something together inspired us to go into business together. We have been successful in our individual careers but have always dreamed about doing something together. We have enjoyed Jeremy’s beer for years and knew that this was the project we believed in and wanted to get behind. We have created a place to come together, catch up,and enjoy great beer.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY TO YOUR BUSINESS.
We understand the close-knit community that is El Segundo, and we wanted to make sure that it wasn’t just the city we have our business in. We set out to provide a community space that locals
and non-locals alike could feel connected to. Even our name, Five Point Five, is a callout to El Segundo's square mileage of 5.5. It is a constant reminder to us to always keep the community in mind. We prioritize supporting local businesses and the school district through events and sponsorships. The community has been a tremendous support to us, and we will continue to look for ways to have a positive impact.
HOW IS YOUR COMPANY LEADING THE WAY WITH WOMEN IN POSITIONS OF AUTHORITY?
The craft beer industry is typically a male-dominated space. This is often reflected in the masculine taprooms within breweries. We provide a more neutral space for our patrons that is both functional and comfortable. Women love beer too!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM.
We are truly a family-owned and operated business! We all firmly believe in hard work and have definitely put in the sweat equity since our opening. HILLARY ALLBRITTON
Owner/Creative Director, Elizabeth Grace Floral
Elizabeth Grace Floral is a floral design company serving clients throughout southern California. Owner Hillary Allbritton earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business and worked for a software company before relocating to California. She opened Elizabeth Grace Floral in 2019 after a friend encouraged her to turn the floral centerpieces she designed for loved ones’ parties into a business.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
Our work focuses on floral designing for special occasions. This encompasses tabletop florals as well as large freestanding or hanging installations for weddings, corporate parties and events. We also maintain a large candle inventory and offer them as part of our floral design service or as a standalone candle installation. We can add activities such as making leis or floral crowns or classes on centerpiece design, to name a few.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES AUTHENTICITY PLAY INTO YOUR BUSINESS MODEL?
Developing close rapport with my clients is something I feel strongly about. When we are first starting our process, I invest a great deal of time getting to know them, who they are, what really matters to them, and the type of relationship and service they are looking for. This in-depth approach goes a long way to informing the design process and delivering a product that my clients love.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
I may be the face of the business, but behind the scenes it is truly a family-run operation. I am the mother of two teenage girls, Hadley, 16, and Avery, 13. They are my reason for starting the business and are the namesakes, as Elizabeth and Grace are their middle names.
Both girls work in the business. Avery primarily provides support in the studio, handling hard goods and processing flowers. Hadley is a key design team member both in the studio and on location for events.
My partner, Matt, leads the operations side of the business and is a jack-of-many-trades including carpenter, load-in/load-out manager, inventory manager, designer, time-keeper and everything else it takes to keep the wheels on and rolling. Rounding out our family are our four rescues: dogs Hank and Ally, and cats Sunnie and Sparky!

Owner Noelle Isbell has worked in design for 20 years and started the firm in 2008.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY TO YOUR BUSINESS.
Community has been at the heart of my interior design journey. As a homeowner in Manhattan Beach and with my store located downtown for the past 10 years, I have the pleasure of connecting with my neighbors and clients daily—helping me build strong relationships and understand the unique needs of our community.
Vendors are eager to have their latest products showcased in our store because they know we reach a discerning audience. This keeps us ahead of trends and ensures we always offer fresh, exciting options.
Being deeply rooted in the community means everything to me. It allows me to bring a personal touch to my work, and it’s a dream to see how our designs enhance both the lives and the landscape around us.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE AS
A WOMAN WORKING IN DESIGN.
The interior design profession has evolved significantly since I graduated from design school. Back then, interior design was often seen as a luxury, and I frequently had to advocate for the value of my services to builders—especially in an industry predominantly led by men. This was intimidating, particularly at the start of my career, as I had to convince them that the architect’s plans were just the beginning and that our work was essential to creating a complete, functional and beautiful space.
Today my company is leading the way by ensuring that women are in key positions of authority. We understand the importance of having diverse voices at the decisionmaking table. By fostering an environment where women can thrive, we not only bring a fresh perspective to our projects but also empower the next generation of female designers to lead with confidence and creativity. We have created a supportive, inclusive company culture where talented women can rise to leadership roles, make impactful decisions and shape the future of our industry.
CHEF CARMEN KARLSGODT
Owner, Healthy Con Gusto
Chef Carmen Karlsgodt, a bilingual food educator, recipe developer and owner of Healthy Con Gusto LLC, offers cooking demos, weekly meals and a catering menu. She provides a range of international dishes, desserts and baked goods— all plant-based, gluten-free, soy-free and low-glycemic.
WHO IS YOUR IDEAL CLIENT?
I love cooking for people with busy schedules and people with food intolerances or allergies. Most of my clients are not vegan and can consume gluten or soy, but they want to eat more plants with gusto. Ideally, I’d also like to work with restaurant owners looking to diversify their menus.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO PEOPLE WHO WANT TO START EATING MORE PLANTS?
This should be a guilt-free journey, so start with just one meal a day. I am not vegan yet (gasp!), but I do eat a lot more plants than I used to. If you focus on eating what makes your taste buds and gut happy, you’re halfway there.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
Being unable to enjoy the Peruvian dishes I grew up with due to dairy and gluten intolerance was difficult. After many years of salads, I found new ways to prepare my favorite foods without the ingredients that are harmful to me, leading me on this delicious journey and sharing what I learn along the way.
HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED THE STRUGGLES YOU HAVE FACED PROFESSIONALLY?
Every entrepreneur has experienced impostor syndrome at some point. For me it was compounded by an idiopathic autoimmune condition. My flare-ups intensified my self-doubt when speaking about health, so adopting a mantra was crucial. If you don’t have one yet, you can borrow mine: “It’s fun, and I’m good at it.” Keep going!
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
In 2021, seeking community in a post-pandemic world, three friends and I founded the South Bay Women’s Wellness Facebook group to foster genuine connections. I feel so fortunate to have formed many new friendships. Any of our current 700 members can create and attend free in-person events. We are building something truly remarkable, so join us!

What sets us apart is our eye-catching converted horse trailer, which adds a unique charm and is a memorable conversation piece for guests. Beyond our services, we also offer the trailer as a rental, providing a versatile blank canvas for other businesses to use as a mobile storefront or for various creative purposes. We also enjoy partnering with local businesses to expand our reach and build stronger community connections.
HOW CAN WE SUPPORT WOMEN IN BUSINESS?
We can actively advocate for and promote their work— recommending their services or products, sharing their achievements on social media or introducing them to our networks. By using our platforms and connections to highlight other women's successes, we help amplify their visibility and create more opportunities for them to thrive.
BEACH LIFE FITNESS BOUTIQUE

Owner Danielle Spangler studied kinesiology and exercise physiology in college and has worked in the fitness industry for more than 30 years. She opened Beach Life in 2019.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT IN YOUR MARKET?
Our studio is not your “typical” Pilates studio. We are so much more! We have a ton of other styles of classes and services to appeal to everyone. Our “fitness that feels good” approach— coupled with our expertise in working with beginners, injuries, prenatal/postpartum and menopausal clients—sets us apart.
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN YOUR INDUSTRY THAT YOU’RE LOVING?
Fitness trends are more customized now. There is a more holistic approach to being healthy and fit. Not only do we offer the
trendiest workouts like Pilates reformer and rebounding, but Beach Life Fitness Boutique is also a certified medical fitness business. This means that in addition to fitness services, we also feature other important pieces of the health journey, like having a physical therapist and registered dietitian on our team.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR TEAM.
The South Bay community means so much to us. We feel so grateful for the women-owned businesses we have partnered with. Our intention is to bring more health-focused businesses to Redondo Beach that prioritize women’s health and wellness. The Beach Life Fitness team has become like a small family and has grown to a 16-woman team of the best fitness professionals. The original team includes Danielle Spangler (owner/instructor), Kelsi Knudsen (trainer/instructor), Allison Heillman (trainer/instructor), Manuela Diethelm (trainer/instructor), Payton Cahalan-Blumenfeld (trainer/instructor/studio manager) and Alyssa Crawford (director of the Beach Mom program). Each of these women holds degrees in kinesiology or human physiology and multiple certifications in group fitness, Pilates and private training. Most importantly, we are truly empathetic, caring fitness professionals who bring the most to our clients and classes.
Audrey Judson earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California and worked in that industry for a few years before transitioning to real estate 35 years ago. She worked with Shorewood Realtors for years before joining Pacifica Properties Group.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE THIS CAREER?
I was working at a local aerospace company as a satellite engineer when my husband and I purchased a home. I was fascinated by the process and decided to get my license with the intention of selling part time to fellow engineers. Turns out that I loved selling homes! The rest is history.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT?
Because of my background in engineering, I tend to focus on details that others may miss. I take pride in reviewing every document and report with my clients—making sure they understand everything they are signing and taking nothing for granted. I think my clients appreciate my thoroughness and my honesty.
DO YOU WORK REMOTELY?
I work best in my office. Although I love the option of working remotely, I’m most productive when I’m at my office surrounded by my incredible team and associates— especially my amazing assistant, Jen.
WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT PASSION PROJECT?
I’ve been a member of the Manhattan Beach Outdoor Dining Task Force for the past year. We’ve been brainstorming solutions to increase the vibrancy of our dining and shopping areas while retaining a small-town feeling and being mindful of residents who live near commercial districts. We are so fortunate to have amazing weather in Southern California. Trying to find ways to expand upon our wonderful sense of community is a passion of mine.
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
My mother and grandmother taught me the meaning of kindness and an impeccable work ethic. I treat my clients with care and respect. They are never just another sale to me. Many have become close friends. I think my clients understand and appreciate my honesty and my commitment to helping them achieve their goals, which is why my business is primarily made up of repeat business and referrals.

We model healthy, positive relationships across all parts of our industry. CHRISTIE HAVEY SMITH
Author
Originally from Chicago, author Christie Havey Smith studied broadcast journalism and film at Ohio University before moving to Los Angeles and working on the creative development of feature films. She teaches creative and contemplative writing and holds a master’s degree in theology and spiritual direction from Loyola Marymount University. Christie’s debut novel, Threads of Us, was recently released.
WHAT IS YOUR NEW BOOK ABOUT?
Threads of Us is the story of Gracie Wilder, a young woman whose father unexpectedly dies, leaving behind a curious gift with ties to a myth told to her as a young girl. In search of answers, Gracie travels back to her childhood home in Old Montreal, where she confronts family secrets and must find a way forward by healing her history backward. It is a fast-paced read exploring love’s power over loss, and it is a Publishers Weekly editor’s pick. I hope it will be a standout in book clubs this fall.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN WRITING?
Writing has been my outlet for creative expression since I was young. My love of story was further shaped in the film business, and for over a decade I’ve been helping people explore their own narratives. When I had my kids, I wrote my first narrative nonfiction book, From Three Feet Off the Ground. Fiction was a natural next step, allowing me to examine life experiences in a deeply imaginative way. With Threads of Us, I delved into the complexities of grief, healing, love and self-discovery. Writing is how I better understand things outside myself as well as deep within myself. I’m now working on a new novel with another world to explore.
SPEAK ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY ON YOUR JOURNEY.
We all have stories inside us, and community is where we encounter these stories. When I opened The Greenhouse in Palos Verdes—a yoga and retreat space where I offer workshops—I was seeking a deeper connection to my community. Years of holding space for stories has not only inspired my writing but also grown me as a person. I could not have written this book at any other time in my life. Connecting with community gives us perspective; it helps us discover what it is we have to say.
MICHELLE STEELE
Owner, Inner Glimmer Skincare + Wellness
Michelle Steele has two decades of experience as an esthetician, massage therapist and Reiki master. She opened her private studio, Inner Glimmer, in 2012. Michelle specializes in facial sculpting massage and high-tech treatments and carries a curated collection of top skin care and wellness brands, including Biologique Recherche.
IN WHAT WAYS DO YOU STAND OUT?
Since 1999, my journey as a licensed massage therapist and Reiki master, combined with my Parisian skin care training, has given me a profound understanding of the intricate link between the physical and emotional aspects of well-being. This is far more than a profession for me— it’s my calling, fueled by the desire to redefine the client experience so that every customized treatment feels like an indispensable necessity. When trusting an esthetician with your largest organ—your skin—you want someone with knowledge and a breadth and depth of experience, but most of all you want flawless results.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE POTENTIAL CLIENTS TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Today consumers are more selective than ever about product ingredients, and so am I. This is why it is an honor to be one of only 300 approved and trained ambassadors in the country—and the only brand ambassador in the South Bay—to offer the iconic Biologique Recherche treatments from Paris.
WHAT ARE THE LATEST TRENDS IN AESTHETICS?
The aesthetics industry is constantly innovating, adapting and evolving. With that comes cutting-edge technologies, techniques and approaches to skin care that cater to the unique needs of every individual. The trends I’m drawn to focus on total mind/body/wellness (holistic modalities such as microcurrent, lymphatic drainage and buccal facial massage) and less on invasive procedures. I believe beautiful skin at any age radiates energy and health.
HOW CAN WE SUPPORT OTHER WOMEN?
Empowering women begins with the integrity of our words. When we uplift one another with kindness, we unlock the power to transform not only ourselves but also the world around us. My commitment to empowering women runs deep, as I strive to ignite a passion for a healthy lifestyle that fosters well-being and vitality.
NICOLE ODOM-REIS
Real Estate Advisor, Nicol Real Estate Group | Compass
ASouth Bay native, Nicole Odom-Reis and her husband are raising their three sons here—twin boys who attend Palos Verdes High School and a college freshman at UCLA. Following the example of her mother, Karen Odom, who was a household name in South Bay real estate for more than four decades, Nicole got her real estate license in 2017 and has worked with Compass since 2019.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN YOUR FIELD?
When I was a young girl, I was always in awe of my mom. Even though she was such a powerhouse in the real estate industry, she never missed any of her three kids’ activities. Real estate is in my blood. I am a people person and I love helping clients, friends and family “find their place in this world.” The example my mother set for me by always being present with her children while operating an incredibly successful real estate business was always something that I wanted to replicate.
MULTITASK OR SINGLE FOCUS?
That’s a tough question. One of my strengths is that I can multitask and service my clients with a “concierge” type of approach. I like to be all-hands-on-deck. On the flip side, I am extremely disciplined and tend to be laser-focused on each transaction. I like my clients to feel they are the only deal I am working on. Quality over quantity.
HOW DOES AUTHENTICITY IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS?
The real estate relationship is all about trust. When you operate with the highest level of integrity and take a sincere approach to your client’s transaction, authenticity becomes a pillar of business. Referrals are the heartbeat of my business and the ultimate form of flattery. You know you’ve done a good job when the business comes back to you!
WHOM DO YOU CREDIT FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS?
I learned from the best in the business: my mother. I credit her for showing me the way, setting the bar extremely high and empowering me to understand that I have no limits. I have to attribute some of my success to my former college coaches. I was an All-American shortstop at UCLA, and winning a national championship doesn’t happen without hard work, discipline, determination and a mental edge.

A LESSON IN CURIOSITY THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD
Written by Heidi Androl
Remember the days when we had to push a pole into the ground to measure how much water was left for showers? Or is that just me?
Imagine an 8-year-old girl charging into the middle of the yard, plunging a long wooden staff four times her size into the ground like Poseidon striking his trident. Then, the grand reveal of pulling the pole out to discover exactly how much water remained. It was thrilling. I never wondered where the water came from because I knew it came from my grandfather’s water truck.
I also had an essential role in this operation: standing on a folding chair at the firehouse, feeding quarter after quarter into a giant machine like I was playing a highstakes arcade game. The prize? Gallons of water! Then we’d drive the precious cargo home, and my grandfather would pour it into the cistern that I’d measure weekly.
You’d think all this would have sparked a curiosity about how all of that water gets to that fire station in the first place, but it didn’t. I wasn’t curious about it at all. It just seemed normal. I assumed everyone did the same.
Fast-forward a few decades, and I recognize that this experience wasn’t the standard among my friends. Most assume water magically appears from a tap, and that forgotten art of stick measurement has faded into obscurity.
Life on the farm gave me many quiet moments—most often tied to important chores, like how to delicately collect the eggs without angering the hen. The maneuver was a work of art. My little hands carefully reached and
felt for the bumps in the straw and sawdust. I learned the rhythm of the hen’s movements, the tones of her clucks and the particular way the eggs rested on their sides.
Through these observations, these moments of patience, I began to cultivate curiosity. Not the kind that leads to grand scientific discoveries but the inquisitiveness of an 8-year-old who notices the little things—like timing the perfect moment to pick up the egg without getting pecked.
It wasn’t until I had my own child that I fully appreciated the concept of curiosity. My young son asks questions about everything—serious questions, imaginative questions, sometimes questions that make me question my own perspective. Suddenly I’m seeing the world through a new lens with a renewed and heightened sense of curiosity. Thanks to my son, I have an awakened sense of wonder in noticing the little things and measuring life’s mysteries with whatever stick I’ve got handy.
Curiosity isn’t something we’re born with or even lose over time, although it is frequently numbed by omnipresent screen life. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to ignore life’s simple magic, but curiosity can change that. It has the power to transform the ordinary into something extraordinary, simply by slowing down.
Observe life intensely; you might be surprised by what you discover. Embrace curiosity. Let it guide you to notice, to explore and to rediscover the familiar. You never know what you might find.
