Introduction About Me
Hello, My name is Elizabeth Moore and I grew up in Detroit, MI and I take great pride in the city that I grew up. Ultimately, that beautiful city is what inspired me to study Urban Planning. I am very aware Detroit has a negative stigma for most people, which may or may not be with reason, but there is so much beauty that’s not appreciated such as the strong sense of community. There’s a saying “Be the change you want to see in the world.”, and I want to make a difference for those in the city who think they don’t have a choice, voice, or chance. I am currently a second year Urban Planning student at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. Prior to studying planning, I studied Architecture at Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills, MI. My previous studies in Architecture helped tremendously by helping me acquire skills in hand-rendering, drafting, and computer-aid design which I will continue to build on. After studying Arhcitecture for a few years, I realized that I wanted to make a bigger impact on cities and changed my major to Urban Planning. My main interests in Urban Planning are Urban Design, Transportation, and Revitalization. As I continue my studies in Urban Planning, I hope to improve my existing skills and acquire the skills needed to help make a difference. Ultimately, I hope to help lower income inner city communities by improving the quality of life afforded to them.

As a semester long project, three students were asked to study, analyze, and collect data to understand a neighborhood that they had little knowledge of prior. We all come from different backgrounds geographically and culturally. Which provided a great base to the story of understanding the neighborhood. So, we anticipated that not only would our initial perspectives of the area vary from each other but also that perspectives would be shifted by the end of the semester.
“As someone who did not grow up in the Cincinnati area, Over-The-Rhine is somewhere that I was told not to go. My parents view OTR as somewhere filled with violence. Many of my relatives were uncomfortable when I told them I was attending UC because of OTR.

Neighborhood Analysis: Over-The-Rhine
Following our first visit to Over-The-Rhine, a graphic was created to summarize our perspectives and observations. Each member of the group created their own list which were then combined to create a group depiction. While different things stood out more to each one of us, we did have a few similar words which are depicted as bigger and bolder.

Observing the Neighborhood Individual Project
Neighborhood Analysis: Over-The-Rhine
Each member of the group was asked to observe a certain area of Over-The-Rhine that was distinctively different from each other. So, opposed to the dense areas that are located further south of OTR, the north most parts of OTR is a lot denser with single-use lots, which made it a great area of observation compared to the areas south of Liberty Street. This area has been impacted most by the population decline and manifests that by the scarce and scattered lots depicted in the Figure Ground Map and 3D Sketchup Model.

Neighborhood Analysis: Over-The-Rhine
By understanding the people of Over-The-Rhine, each member of the group began to see the area as a living community rather than by its reputation. As planners, it is important to understand everything that makes up an area in order to create better designs to fit the community.
“Over-The-Rhine is a perfect example of an area during transition. I think that OTR received a bad reputation nationally due to the 2001 riots, but it is definitely an

area people should watch in the upcoming years.

Two maps were created to show the difference of emphasis and focus on certain aspects to best present effective information: Black on White and White on Black. As you can see in the map, layering and color intensity plays a huge role in what your eye is drawn. This is instrumental for anyone presenting information through mapping.

This analytical map is based on the human senses that you experience while on the site. This theme depicts how much each element (topography, vegetation, and building footprint) impacts the visibility of each space by serving as a physical boundary, limiting visibility, or block light from one space to another which could make a space seem smaller.
