CALLAHAN Challenges: I found the
difficulty of this home was the multiple additions
with the changes in height and roof pitches.
Pictures
and plans
only go a short way to understand the complexity of this home. understand this home so little.
It’s in the sections that the true nugget of understanding comes through (shown by dashed lines in elevations). There are two height changes both on the first and second floor. Add to the difficulty the multiple roof pitches and directions of the roofs had me guessing for hours on how this all went together.
I’m happy to say this project helped me to think
outside of typical practices and showed me different ways to build spaces.

SULLIVAN Challenges: This home reminded me of the old homes with the several fireplaces and the ‘proper’ rooms. The interior was decorated with older painted portraits, a piano, and elaborate furniture-- overall a real sense of elegance. and that’s where the challenge of this home was. Having not seen the home, I had to draw the existing conditions by someone else’s measurements and pictures. The three-story plus basement home; finding where the fireplaces lined up from floor to floor proved difficult. After realizing the home had one major addition with a few add-ons my understanding of the interior to exterior changed. The older portion was constructed with 2x4’s while the newer portion out of 2x6’s. This clarified the dimensions and corrected the drawings.

ADDITIONS & RENOVATIONS
SABELHAUS Challenges: A combination Renovation and Addition, this home went from beautiful to breathtaking. The challenge of this came with the east and west wings, not having the same interior or even same exterior shape. It proved difficult to get spaces to line up with one another. Adding the great room to the back of the house really helped to define spaces. Now, as you enter the building you are welcomed by a large greeting space that transitions into the great room with cathedral ceilings and a large central fireplace which precedes out onto the covered porch to the wonderful beach front views.
The Kitchen, Master Bedroom & Bath
along with
other spaces were also renovated to have more openess and modernized equipment.
I really like the choice to maintain teh majority of the exterior- keeping it to its roots, and changing the interior to revitalize the home.

SEAMAN Challenges: This home is
so beautiful yet something wasn’t quite right.
In
its renovation, we correct the awkward brokeback roof as the main roof.
Slightly heightening the second-floor ceiling greatly The interior, while completely redone, was not changed much except for the new spiral staircase; therein lies the challenge. Discovering that the home had additions. The floors didn’t line up with the floors in the garage. A solution was found by breaking up the height changes from the hallway leading down into the garage. improved the overall exterior of the home.

KITCHEN Challenges: I love working on Kitchens. I see it as the heart of a home. Discovering where everything fits just right and wants to be can sometimes be difficult. This was a case where the kitchen was not symmetrical because of the doorways as well as the beams above, with an island to boot.
Centering the beams on either side
of the island and having the isle be nearly the same width to walk around makes the environment smooth.
Staying
true to the
‘work triangle’ the island sink makes cooking a breeze. The white surfaces and windows make the space bright, airy and welcoming.

MASTER BATH Challenges: Material transitions can be one of the hardest things to achieve gracefully. This Master Bath, though simple in layout, proved challenging when transitioning the different types of materials from the tub stone with a built-in niche to the chair rail wrapped around, to the shower and above the sink counter, between the windows and doors.
I
believe architecture is in the details and
this is one place where that shows truer than ever.

STAIRS Challenges: Stairs can always have their unique challenges, I chose to show this project not for it’s difficulty in the utilitarian floor to floor purposes but for the environment it creates. This is the entry to the home with a grand vertical wrap around stair on the left side. The challenge for this was the curved walls with paneling and a pitched roof on either side. The floor to floor heights were also difficult because of the high ceilings. Each opening is set at 8’-0” so the second floor had to be much higher, and the stairs had to reach that height in a small space. It is a very embracing space as you enter the home.

After dividing out the cellar evenly the fireplace was not going to allow for a symmetrical room. A solution was made by hiding it and making it only one bottle deep. The brick pilasters with the vaulted ceiling complete this vintage Mediterranean style wine cellar.
