SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF METROLINA ANNUAL REPORT Letter from Our Executive Director I am often quoted as saying, “I have the world’s best job.” And I really do mean this when I say it.

How could anything be more inspiring than helping feed hungry children, seniors, working poor families and animals?

As we put together this annual report with a theme of feeding people inspires us, I had a wonderful opportunity to sit and reflect on the amazing people I have met in my seven years with Second Harvest.

I was inspired by Eliot Boyd. He was 7 years old when we first met and he and his best friend Juan went door to door in their apartment complex collecting for the Food Bank. They collected $67.00 and Eliot added his entire piggy bank savings of $3.25.

I was inspired by the youth of First Baptist Church in Belmont. They came to volunteer at the Food Bank and while they were here went on a tour of our facility. Our staff person was explaining to the youth how Second Harvest can feed a family of four for a week for about $21.00. They completed their work and climbed aboard their van to head home.

As our staff person was locking up she heard a knock on the door and when she answered, she found one of the youth from Belmont. The young lady handed our staff person the $21.00 they had collected on the van pooling their change and announced, “We wanted to feed a family of four.”

I was inspired by the letter I received from one of the children at a Kids Café site here in Charlotte. Jaylin sent me the picture shown to the right with a note thanking us for the food we send.

I was inspired by the young father in Burke County who rode to one of our emergency pantries on a moped. He had been laid off from his job and had been living for two weeks on canned beans and a loaf of bread so his daughter would have enough to eat. He was so embarrassed to ask for help but he had to feed his child.

I was inspired by the second grader in Spartanburg County who receives a backpack every week at Holly Springs Elementary.

When her school was scheduled to be closed on a Friday she came to her teacher to explain that she would be walking to school to get her backpack since the bus would not come. The relief on this child’s face as the teacher explained that the backpacks would be handed out on Thursday is burnt into my mind.

SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK OF METROLINA ANNUAL REPORT I was inspired by the senior in York County who receives one of our Second Helping boxes each month filled with food to help her make ends meet.

She sent me a thank you with a special request to please keep sending the peanut butter – it’s her favorite.

I was inspired by the father who rode 5 miles on a bicycle with his arm in a cast to get food. He had broken his arm working on his car and was fired from his job as a plumber because he could not work. Lack of insurance kept him seeking prompt medical attention causing complications with the arm. He had been forced to apply for food stamps and was waiting for approval when he came to the Food Bank.

I was inspired by the man I met at one of our distributions. He brought his two dogs with him and told us they were his family and top priority was getting food for them.

I was inspired by the young boy I met at a pantry distribution day here at the Food Bank. As we loaded boxes into his mom’s car, the little boy handed me a tiny plastic bag with coins inside. I turned to the little boy and said no you keep your money. His mom said it is important for him to learn to give and insisted I keep the coins. That 56 cents in that tiny plastic bag still sits on my desk.

I was inspired by the lady who visited our Food Bank bringing with her a Folgers Coffee can filled with pennies she had been saving for two years.

She wanted to help feed hungry people.

I was inspired by the lady whose mother had recently passed away. Among her things, the daughter found a change purse full of change.

She brought the change to us as her mother’s last good deed.

I was inspired by the single mother with two boys and a dog I met at the Food Bank. The mom was struggling with the decision to give up their prized family pet – a member of their family – because she could not afford to feed him.

If space would allow I could tell you all these stories for days. What a privilege it is to have my job. Thanks to everyone out there who inspires me every day. The people we serve, my staff, our Board, our volunteers and our food and financial donors. But most importantly, those we help.

The companies we represent are diverse and include many different types of operations. From grocery stores to banks to hospital systems to airlines to professional sports teams to manufacturers, we all share one common goal and vision and that is to insure that no one in our community ever goes hungry.

Since 1981, Second Harvest has been working with food and financial donors, volunteers and our almost 650 partner agencies to help people in need in our region. None of our work would be possible without the support of each of you reading this report.

Thank you on behalf of every hungry child, senior and working poor family. Your support gives us the strength and resources we need to continue our efforts. We appreciate your inspiration.

It is natural that Family Dollar’s charitable giving program should be dedicated to helping people in crisis in the communities we serve, and it is inevitable that the Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina should be a major recipient of that program. Last year alone, the Food Bank distributed more than 33 million pounds of food to families in need in the Carolinas.

No need is more fundamental than the need for food. Hungry children can’t learn and hungry adults cannot work to support their families. If we can send a child to school well-fed, alert and eager to learn, what might the results be for that child, for this community, this nation, this world?

Because the recession has been so severe in York, Lancaster and Chester counties, the Board of Directors of The Springs Close Foundation decided in 2009 to make a temporary shift in its focus of charitable giving to help local citizens who need basic emergency support such as food, shelter and medical assistance. Non-proďŹ t agencies that effectively deliver these services have been stretched to the limit and the Foundation has attempted to rise to the challenge.

The Foundation has partnered for several years with Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina to provide supplemental boxes of food to homebound elderly throughout our service area. In 2009-2010, the Foundation extended its support of the Food Bank by helping to host mobile pantries that provided hundreds of thousands of pounds of food to those in need.

The Foundation is also proud to support the Backpack Program in the Fort Mill area of York County and throughout Lancaster County, providing backpacks full of nutritious food to children at risk of hunger on weekends and holidays when school meals are not available.

The basic need to sustain life is food. The Springs Close Foundation is proud to partner with Second Harvest in making an attempt to lessen hunger in the areas it serves.

In these economic times, I guess anyone is just lucky to have a job. But those of us who are fortunate enough to have a job that we love are truly blessed. I have a job that lets me help senior adults maintain their independence and remain living in their own homes. At the York County Council on Aging, two of the services that we provide to accomplish this are home delivered meals and group meals at eight senior centers.

Imagine knowing that you have a part in seeing that more than 700 seniors have eaten a balanced meal that day. They did not have to make the choice that so many of our seniors make each day, do I buy food or medicine?

Finding the resources to feed increasing numbers of seniors in need is a challenge. As the dollars we receive have decreased, we have still been able to add new seniors to our programs. We have the Food Bank to thank for that.

We have been a partner agency almost since the Food Bank opened its doors. They always seem to be able to ďŹ nd additional food to help us provide meals to hungry seniors. We have even been able to provide supplemental food boxes to our homebound seniors who are the most nutritionally frail and vulnerable, because the staff at Second Harvest took the time to write a grant for us.

It has been a joy to work with these people who have our common goal of feeding hungry seniors.

There is a John Donne quote that says, “Every man’s death diminishes me for I am involved in mankind.” I think this means that every person’s life force affects mine. If someone is hurt or injured or in need then my life is lessened in some way.

If we are truly concerned about helping people improve their lives, then we first need to be sure they have enough to eat.

No one can learn a skill, deal with a habit or solve problems if they are hungry. Children cannot learn in school or grow up to be contributing citizens if they are hungry.

Volunteering at Second Harvest Food Bank has been a great experience for me the last few years. I volunteer as part of a group from Hickory Grove Baptist Church that helps support C.U.P. Ministry, one of the Food Bank’s emergency pantry partners in Mecklenburg County.

We work with Gracie in the food sorting area and with Linda in the non-food sorting area. Both of these ladies are so dedicated to their jobs.

You can tell how much they love what they do and how much they care about the people in our area who need help.

That in itself has been inspiring. When I see how much it means to them for us to come and volunteer, it makes it worthwhile.

From the time you walk in the door at the Food Bank until the time you leave, you feel such an outpouring of love from every person there.

It is hard work but the time passes so quickly and you know you are making a real difference in someone’s life. I hope that I will be able to volunteer at the Food Bank for many more years.

Being Director of the Anson Crisis Ministry in Wadesboro, North Carolina is the greatest job I have ever held in my entire life. I hesitate to say “job” because it is not a “job to me.” In fact, I love what I get to do every day which is to help people who are struggling to make ends meet or are in a temporary crisis. I make a real difference in their lives by simply giving them groceries.

As I stood in line at a local grocery store a few months back, I recognized a father who had come in for food assistance. I could not recall his name so I just smiled and nodded. He came up to me in line and told me he would never forget how I helped him during a time when he was desperate. I could not for the life of me recall his situation but that was not important. What was important was that we gave him food and helped him through a rock bottom time for him.

He introduced me to his family as the “nice lady that gave us food.” Now that was humbling and rewarding and yes, I went to my car and cried. You see, I love where I spend my days. I love helping people. It just doesn’t get any better than this for me!

I often hear from others that they would love to do what I do. My friends deem my work as a “feel good job.” That sentiment is true in many ways.

Our team at the Food Bank is here for one reason – to end hunger in our communities. It won’t truly be a “feel good job” until that goal is accomplished.

HUNGER! That is what brought me as an Assistance League Member to Second Harvest. The goal of Second Harvest is to end hunger; the vision of the Assistance League is to enable every child to succeed. This makes for a very good fit.

The staff and volunteers of Second Harvest work nonstop in 19 counties in North and South Carolina to alleviate hunger. Assistance League believes that children cannot succeed if they are hungry. For both giving back to the community is the work and passion.

Assistance League sponsors Operation Check Hunger – a snack program where over 2300 children are given a daily healthy snack. The bulk of the packaged snacks are bought with the buying power and supported with critical hunger funds through Second Harvest.

It has been so rewarding to find two organizations with deep compassion for helping to alleviate hunger. What could be better than putting smiles on children’s faces?

My inspiration for volunteering came from the kindness shown to me from others in the past. They do not know this but they taught me that just taking a moment of my time, which is really no bother, sometimes impacts someone else’s life in ways that I may or may not realize.

Volunteering inspires me to believe that the needy will not always be forgotten and that their hope should never perish, as the Psalm reads. I have been a struggling young single working Mom. It was decades ago but the worry of managing day care, medical and living expenses on a tight budget still stings. Typing thesis papers on the weekends and nights after my day job got me over the hump. The memory and fright of one particular week with $35 left for food and gasoline and the prayer of no emergencies is still strong and drives me to do all I can to fight hunger and desperation for other young women.

As a former Account Manager for Tyson Foods for 20 years and as a current Business Manager for Acosta Sales and Marketing, I have been fortunate to work for companies who aid hunger relief, support Food Bank special events and help families in need throughout our region.

As a member of Food Trade Organizations like GMRA and NC Frozen and Refrigerated Food Council, I am inspired to work alongside manufacturers and retailers who are driven to work in unison to end hunger. As a Second Harvest Board Member, I am inspired to work with fellow Board Members who have a unified goal that no senior, child, family or young woman – should live with desperation stress.

I have been in Charlotte approximately one year, and am in a position that allows me to give back to the community. I am a nurse by training, and my experience has demonstrated that malnutrition is more prevalent than one might imagine, and that hunger shows no prejudice. I chose to volunteer at Second Harvest because it represents a community focused and organized effort at addressing both of these situations.

For me I fully understand that there are real people…people who need a little help…who will ultimately benefit from my efforts. I can imagine the relief that comes to these recipients, knowing where their next meal will come from, and that there will be one. I can imagine the children…

At the time I applied for my job at Second Harvest in 2006 I had no real idea what feeding people really meant. I accepted the position based on what was best for me and my family. I did not take the time to think about how profound it is to feed people.

As time has passed I have discovered that feeding people shows love for one another. Our partner agencies show their love of feeding people on their faces when they come to the Food Bank. My co-workers show their love of feeding people by their commitment and dedication. Our board members and donors show their love of feeding people by their support.
