A message to the MFS community

As Head of School, it is thrilling to see our 700+ diverse students engaged in a vibrant curriculum and participating in a host of academic competitions and athletic contests. I see on display in every classroom the school’s mission to combine spiritual and ethical development with a rigorous academic program. Quaker values are very much in evidence – and in action. As an alumnus, I am heartened to know that MFS is now so much more than “that nice school in Moorestown.” We are the

preeminent academic institution in South Jersey. Our students achieve the highest SAT scores in the region – more than 150 points above top neighboring schools. It’s no surprise that some 40% of our youngest alumni are studying at the top 50 schools in the country (including all of the Ivies and schools like Swarthmore, Amherst, Haverford, Wellesley, MIT, and Chicago).

A talented and questing faculty is the key to the success of the school. In a great departure from the past, the school now invests deeply in the faculty, providing salaries that are on par with our peer Delaware Valley independent schools. I am confident that the faculty giants when I attended the school would be very happy to know that today they have worthy and well-paid successors who are continuously looking to inspire students. With the growth of enrollment and academic offerings, the school

has been challenged by a shortage of classrooms and labs. The Great Classrooms for Great Kids capital campaign was undertaken to address that challenge. Scores of alumni, parents, trustees, grandparents, faculty and staff have already participated in the campaign, and together have provided more than $6 million. Thanks to these generous commitments, Hartman Hall was opened this spring. Dedicated in honor of Neil Hartman, a revered, long-time teacher, it is providing eight new math classrooms, a choral music suite, a tech lab and much more. The campaign will also make possible a new environmental science/chemistry lab and a physics/robotics lab, which will be installed in the Middle and Upper School this summer.
