Whenever the number of days or weeks to Christmas is quoted, it stirs a slight sense of panic that preparations should be underway – but the commercial lead up to Christmas always starts sooner than I ever feel ready to embrace - and then I realise that eleven weeks is actually quite a long time. It is a very busy time of year with a lot to fit in but it’s also a lovely time of year; I think that part of my reluctance to rush into Christmas too soon, stems from the fact that I really enjoy those crisp, mellow autumn days when the leaves are changing colour. Eleven weeks is nearly three months, a quarter of a year – plenty of time to get Christmas sorted and still enjoy autumn in the meantime.
• We now publish three magazine titles: Moor Links, Tavy Links and Oke Links
I thought there was a lot to fit into the last two summer issues, but it appears that autumn is just as busy - between now and the first weekend of December we have Goosey Fair, halfterm activities, Hallowe’en, Bonfire Night, Remembrance Day, Dickensian Evening and Christmas fairs, as well as a wealth of local art, music and drama productions to while away the long dark evenings.
• A minimum of 60% editorial content – always ensuring a ‘really good local read’.
In this issue, we have also focused on local sportspeople, and Nichola and I have had the pleasure of interviewing some remarkable people, achieving an incredible range of personal goals, from competing in world championships to defying the constraints of disability. Emily Woodhouse has also written a fascinating insight into what it takes to become a member of Dartmoor Search and Rescue for our feature article, while our history section marks the 35th anniversary of the Falklands War with Stephen Earp’s experiences from 35 years ago, as well as his more recent visit to the islands.
Rosemary Rosemary Best - Editor editorial@moorlinks.co.uk 01822 853110 The deadline for any inclusions in the December/January issue of Moor/Tavy Links will be 1st November 2017. We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to our many local contributors for so kindly giving us their time and expertise and making our magazine so interesting to all.

Drake Manor Inn wins top accolade The Good Pub Guide has named The Drake Manor Inn in Buckland Monachorum as The Good Pub Guide Value Pub of the Year 2018, describing it as ‘the charming Drake Manor in Buckland Monachorum with its friendly, long-serving landlady’. Mandy Robinson, who has been licensee at the Drake Manor Inn since 1989 (some 28 years), is delighted to receive this award. Every year the editors of The Good Pub Guide select the very best pubs across the UK to receive awards in a range of categories, selected because of their consistent excellence. Value awards are given to pubs that manage to keep an interesting offering of main course dishes at £11 or under.
Mandy Robinson is thrilled to receive this recognition and said: “We pride ourselves on creating traditional and speciality home-cooked food. All of our food is locally sourced with an emphasis on freshness and quality and we try to keep our prices affordable without compromising on quality and portion sizes. We like to think our menu and specials board offer something for everyone and it’s wonderful to be rewarded for our efforts.” For more information about the Drake Manor Inn visit www.drakemanorinn.co.uk
Consultation on single council West Devon Borough and South Hams District Council launched a consultation in August to ask residents and businesses what they thought of a proposal to set up a single new council to cover both the areas currently served by the two authorities. The consultation period came to an end on 8 October and the findings will now be reviewed.
save the tax payer £6million in operating costs. However, since they first shared a chief executive in 2007, the two authorities have kept the two political structures completely separate. Each council currently has 31 elected members, a leader, a deputy leader, a separate set of accounts and separate council meetings.
The proposal for a single council was put forward to help address a predicted 2020 budget gap of £1.9 million, which has been brought about by successive reductions in central government funding since 2010.
Deputy Leader of West Devon Borough Council, Cllr Lois Samuel said: “The reality is that the councils find themselves in a financial situation with decreasing government funding and this is a logical next step from the shared services and our Transformation 18 programme.”
Both authorities already share one workforce and together

When you think of a marathon, running comes to most people’s minds, but not for the members of gig rowing clubs. For them London’s Great River Race has become an annual highlight - a gruelling 21.6 miles up the River Thames from the Docklands to Ham in Surrey. Over 300 craft take part in a truly international event. The Dutch are always out in force but this year there were teams from Bermuda, Kuwait, Ireland and of course a strong contingent from Devon and Cornwall including Tamar and Tavy Gig Club. Like any marathon it begins with months of training, steadily building up to three-hour rowing sessions. Then the pinnacle of organisational logistics transporting three 33-foot-long Cornish pilot gigs by road to London and across the capital. The rules state that a large flag, the rowers and a passenger must be carried. This means it quickly becomes a carnival as well as a race with lots of fancy dress, an oompah band on a passenger boat and of course teams with silly names - Tamar

Spectators lined every bridge cheering ‘oggi, oggi, oggi!’ and urging on the gigs, Tamar, Ginette and Iron Maid. This year as gig Tamar passed Fulham Football Club the crowd roared - we like to think it was for us. Finally we passed Kew Bridge and then on to the finish canon and a welcome drink at The White Swan pub where the tide laps into the beer garden and the crews quaff a pint, up to their knees in water. ‘Project George’ has now been running for five years to raise funds for Walkhampton Memorial Hall with a view to replacing the roof and extending the building. The project is on schedule and aiming to complete stage one before the end of this year which means that the most important objective - a new roof which doesn’t leak! - has been completed. With the addition of a new clock tower or cupola to the new modern profiled steel roof, all roofing work will very soon be completed. Stage one also includes a large extension at the rear of the building to provide a modernised kitchen and the extra store-room space badly needed for Walkhampton Pre-school Playgroup. Externally, another garage store has also been built to house larger outdoor items. The new kitchen area
just needs fitting out with new equipment before teams of volunteers can ‘pitch in’ to decorate all the new areas. Stages two and three involve the addition of another small function/club room and sports changing room facilities, but further rounds of grant support will be necessary to achieve these objectives. Apart from the original legacy from George Eggins, a lot of the funding for the work to date has come in the form of grants from various public bodies or charitable trusts. However, in these final weeks of work, it has been really heart-warming to witness so many villagers and regular hall users stepping forward to help with generous private donations. So, a huge thank you to everyone for their support. Paul Edge

British Beds moved into Yelverton business park nearly six years ago, and trades very successfully both locally and worldwide. It is no ordinary high-volume bed shop – instead, it supplies luxurious beds and mattresses, hand made to order, including the Dartmoor Bed range which has been created locally over the last two years by Dartmoor craftsmen and uses wool from sheep raised at Northlew. Roger Charles feels, as the company benefits from the patronage of both the worldwide and the local communities, that it is important to give something back as well. On most worldwide sales, British Beds contributes a small amount to ShelterBox, keeping in mind many less fortunate people around the world who have nowhere to sleep when calamities strike. Customers have also been keen to add donations and the combined amount has paid for seven shelter-boxes, each providing refuge
for a complete family. Locally, the company has paid for the grass-cutting and upkeep of Yelverton roundabout for several years, as well as planting spring and summer flowers and facilitating in the renovation of the central signpost. Some efforts have been more successful than others though, as the planting of 40,000 poppy seeds only resulted in one poppy! British Beds has also just provided the paint for the
refurbishment of the Crapstone bus shelter and everyone is looking forward to seeing the children’s winning design appear on the shelter. British Beds offers a 10% discount (5% on sale prices) to customers with PL19 and PL20 postcodes and would like to thank local customers who have supported British Beds over the last six years.

Greater Dartmoor Local Enterprise Action Fund Having already successfully committed over £600k to 31 businesses, the upper threshold for applications to the Greater Dartmoor Local Enterprise Action Fund (GD LEAF) has been increased from £100k to £150k. This will open up the funding opportunity to larger projects in the Dartmoor area. Those interested in applying for funding should check their business/project is in the eligible GD LEAF area before submitting a project proposal. All application details including maps of the GD LEAF area are available on www.drcompany. co.uk/gdleaf. GD LEAF funding can cover costs associated with capital items such as building work and materials, equipment, marketing and software. Projects/businesses who submit proposals which meet the eligibility criteria, are assigned a DR Company Project Advisor to help each applicant take their application forward. Applications are assessed by the GD LEAF board which is comprised of a wide range of volunteer experts and professionals from the local area. The power of community Bere Ferrers’ ‘The Friends of the Club’ was formed four years ago to raise funds to modernise the Bere Ferrers Social Club facilities. Club members, volunteers and local tradesmen from the community have all lent a hand to redecorate the events area, entrance lobby, toilets and club exterior, as well as fully modernise the kitchen. The next phase of the project will be updating the bar and games area.
On 26 November, the fourth Christmas Arts and Craft Fair will be hosted by The Friends of the Club (see what’s on for details).
The social club complements an excellent village pub and a much-used village hall, and provides an incredibly varied programme of live events. Run entirely by volunteers, the BFS Club opens six nights a week and hosts a range of entertainments such as live comedy nights, live music guest speakers, private parties, card and games evenings, charity quizzes and craft afternoons. It also has a wide range of games facilities, including darts, pool, table tennis, a full-size snooker table and a skittle alley. You too could easily become a club member and enjoy all these activities!
Update on education funding from Geoffrey Cox MP Therefore, both before and after the election, I and other Devon MPs have persistently lobbied both to make the National Funding Formula fairer to local schools, and to tackle the cost pressures they have faced. Prior to the election, we held meetings with the Devon Association of Secondary Headteachers and with the Secretary of State for Education to urge recognition of the need for the National Funding Formula to address some of these problems.
For many years, and throughout Labour’s tenure of office, Devon has had to put up with one of the worst government school grants in the country. By 2010, the annual funding disparity per pupil had steadily grown to nearly £380 less than the national average. But since 2010, more money than ever before has gone into education and thanks to the hard work of teachers, staff and pupils, 1.8 million more children are in the 89% of good or outstanding schools. In 2015/16, an extra £16.4 million of new money was injected into Devon’s schools’ funding, which reduced the disparity to £270. To make the distribution of school funding fairer, the Government commenced work on a new National Funding Formula and published the proposals earlier this year. Under the proposed formula, most Torridge & West Devon schools would gain substantially, but some would lose. Furthermore, despite the increased funding, rising costs over the past two years, such as the apprenticeship levy and the national living wage, have eaten into school budgets.

As a result, prior to the election, the Government guaranteed that no school would lose out from the introduction of the National Funding Formula and last month, after continued efforts of persuasion and further meetings, the Secretary of State announced that, in addition, another £1.3 billion would be directed to the core schools’ budget, diverting funds to help with the cost pressures, from monies that had been set aside for new free schools. The formula will now ensure that all Torridge & West Devon schools will benefit from increased funding, many in substantial sums, and that at the very least, there will be no real term reductions in their budgets. We have come a long way from 2010, when our national deficit was £152 billion a year and the Labour Party Chief Secretary to the Treasury left his famous note stating “there is no money left”. However, despite a reduction of the annual deficit by more than two thirds, our national debt continues to increase by approximately £50 billion a year. In these still difficult economic circumstances, I and other MPs in Devon will continue to act together to ensure that our children’s education is protected. Geoffrey Cox QC MP

Alex Waterhouse starting with Canada in 2013, followed by New Caledonia and then Italy in 2015, where he competed across all three disciplines of lead, speed and bouldering to achieve an incredible 6th place in the overall world rankings. This was the first year he had competed in speed, and training had had its challenges - the nearest speed wall was in Sheffield. Fortunately, with a little ingenuity he had managed to recreate a close replica of the route at the High Sports Plymouth Climbing Centre, where he was sponsored. In the same year, which was also his final A-level year, he became the UK junior bouldering champion and the senior speed champion, as well as captain of the GB junior bouldering team.
Alex had never really climbed until he went to secondary school – just three years later he was a member of the GB training team and taking part in competitions all over the world. ‘Adventurous’ and ‘competitive’ are two words that really spring to mind when Alex describes his childhood. Growing up, he loved the adrenalin rush of racing go-karts, pitting himself against his father and brothers to reach the finish line first. When he started at Devonport High School for Boys, he joined the climbing club and discovered a natural affinity for the climbing wall, enjoying the physical challenge of working out the best route to the top. However, it wasn’t until someone mentioned the existence of climbing competitions, that his interest was really sparked. Three months into climbing and showing early promise, Alex entered a regional competition and came third. He started visiting The Barn Climbing Centre in Milton Abbot once a week with his father. Initially roped in purely as a ‘taxi’ driver, his father had no climbing experience, but soon graduated from drinking coffee to learning how to belay for Alex, to climbing himself.
fourteen he was selected for the GB training team and started entering European competitions. Alex explained to me that climbing competitions focus on three main events – lead, speed and bouldering: ‘lead’ is an endurance test to see how high a climber can get on a route; ‘speed’ measures the time taken to complete a set route; ‘bouldering’ involves trying to get to the top of up to four ‘boulder’ problems in the fewest attempts in a 5-minute timeframe. To begin with, Alex concentrated on lead competitions but as he entered more of the European competitions and moved up an age category, he transferred into bouldering, enjoying the variety of solving different challenges. He was selected for three World Youth Climbing Championships,
Just a year after Alex started climbing, he came fourth in an open national competition. Realising then that he ‘could do this’, he started researching training methods on the internet - the once-a-week hobby quickly became a five-times-a-week passion. He was fortunate to be able to train with the youth climbing club at The Barn, coached by Mikey Cleverdon, an inspirational south west climber who fought hard to regain his previous climbing form after suffering a stroke. After just two years of climbing Alex took first place in the regionals and came second in the national final. He continued training and entering more and more competitions, until at the age of
Wedding Flowers
Having finished school and successfully applied to study at Dartmouth College in the US, Alex took a gap year to spend a few months travelling in SE Asia, obviously incorporating several opportunities for bouldering en route. On his return, he had his work cut out to catch up on training and try to make the selection for the 2016 World Youth Championships in China. Needless to say, he managed it, even though he had already started studying in the US by the time of the event.

Alex has just spent a month with friends in South Africa doing what he describes as ‘chilling out in the best bouldering problems in the world’. For now, he is concentrating on making the most of all the opportunities open to him, trying to balance his studies with enjoying a social life, exploring a new country, planning more climbing trips, adapting to the American style of climbing and competing in the American Cup series. I think he is probably already living the dream, but I suspect he will also fulfil many of his other dreams in the years to come.

Alex could not have achieved any of this without hours of training, incredible determination and the unfailing support of his family, particularly his father who has attended all his competitions. He still has many ambitions including becoming a British champion, bouldering in the Himalayas, a first ascent of a mountain, and the pinnacle of achievement would be to take part in the Olympics, now that climbing will be included as an event from 2020.

on, two hours off, through fair weather and foul, including a terrifying series of storms in Hurricane Alex.
Lee Spencer – the Rowing Marine Lee survived three tours in Afghanistan and then a freak motorway accident changed his life…
Fit, active and seeking an outdoor life, Lee joined the Royal Marines at 21; having grown up in Dagenham, he was drafted to Bickleigh in 1992, and he and his wife Claire moved to Horrabridge. He travelled the world as a Royal Marine for 24 years, taking part in the original invasion of Iraq in 2003 and three tours of duty in Afghanistan, where he worked undercover and was seconded to the Secret Intelligence Service. Whilst in Afghanistan he rescued a puppy caught in wire close to Helmand camp. The puppy was adopted by the camp and then Lee arranged for the charity NOWZAD to ship it back to the UK. In gratitude Lee organised a winter marathon from Okehampton to Horrabridge across the freezing moor, in deep snow, dividing the money raised between NOWZAD and the Royal Marines Charity. Bitten by the fundraising bug, Lee followed this up with many running and cycling events, including a double marathon.
and working in areas where bombs were a regular occurrence, Lee felt mentally prepared. Well aware of his life-threatening injuries he understood the crucial need to tourniquet the bleeding right leg. With the help of another motorist, Frank Sabindi, whose daughter stood on the femoral artery while Frank tied a tourniquet, the bleed was stemmed for 25 minutes until the ambulance service arrived.
Lee had to stop to fix a flat tyre while travelling on 5 January 2014; cursing his misfortune he posted on Facebook ‘Could this day get any worse’. A few hours later on the M3 he stopped again to help at a serious collision. Moments later a second car collided with the stationary car and the engine and gear box were catapulted into Lee’s right leg taking the limb almost clean off just below the knee, badly dislocating his left knee and catapulting him 10 metres. Amazingly he didn’t lose consciousness; after many sorties into landmine fields
A year later he received an email asking for volunteers to join a crew of four amputee rowers on the “Row2Recovery” attempt at a Guinness world record to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic unsupported. After a 6-month selection process, Lee was invited to join the crew of servicemen: Cale Royce from the Light Dragoons, Nigel Rogoff from the RAF and Paddy Galagher from the Irish Guards. On 20 December 2015, four men with three legs between them, set off from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on a punishing schedule of two hours
Waking up at St George’s Hospital, lucky to be alive, Lee started planning the rest of his life, following a full reconstruction of his dislocated left knee and the amputation of his right leg just below the knee. He had been fit, active, defined by his physicality and what he had achieved - he did not wish to be redefined by his disability. By April he was up and walking. In June he took part in a sponsored event, walking one mile, raising £12,000.
They saw whales and dolphins, were bombarded by flying fish, narrowly avoided a tanker, had to cobble together a third auto helm after damaging two, and Lee broke his prosthetic leg, casually tweeting afterwards ‘Broke a leg, but it’s OK, I’ve got a spare one!’. Despite battling side swells, 30ft waves and losing three stone in weight, Lee and the crew rowed into Antigua 46 days, 6hours and 49minutes later, establishing a new world record. The boat was renamed “HMS Legless” in typical service-style humour and Lee says: “It was both mentally and physically demanding, petrifying at times for someone whose previous nautical experience was the Torpoint Ferry.” Lee is now planning a second crossing – but this time he plans to row solo. After a chance meeting with General Davies, the Governor of Gibraltar, Lee is campaigning to row from Gibraltar to Venezuela and hopes to break two world records – the fastest crossing for an able-bodied rower, set at 96 days, 12 hours, and the first single-handed crossing for a disabled rower. He tells me why it is so important to push himself: “I am trying to maintain in the nation’s conscience, the wounded
servicemen and women who can be easily forgotten. Secondly I want to prove there is life beyond injury and disability - it need not define you or limit your expectations.” His business card describes him as ‘The rowing marine - inspirational, motivational speaker’ – I think that just about says it all. Nichola Williams Lee intends to start his next challenge on 18 January 2018 and is looking for sponsorship, especially corporate, both to support the challenge and raise funds for the Endeavour Fund and the Royal Marine Charity. If you can help or want to follow Lee on social media, visit his website www.leespencer.co.uk

Bude, 5k run around Tamar Lakes, 40k bike ride back to Roadford, then another 5k run to the finish. But it was not until 2013 when he joined the Bere Alston Trekkers (BATS) that Andrew became a serious athlete. There he met Nathan Newton and the pair struck up an enduring friendship. Nathan is a more experienced runner and has become Andrew’s coach and mentor. They regularly train together and push each other on to bigger and bolder competitions.

You may know Andrew Bowden who works in the Co-op in Yelverton, as a mild mannered, tall and cheerful man, but when off duty he is passionate about the outdoor life running, cycling and swimming, pushing himself ever further taking on marathons, duathlons, triathlons and even Ironman competition. I managed to catch him in between training sessions and he told me all about his sporting endeavours. Andrew was born in Whitchurch and attended Tavistock College before studying English Literature and History at Marjons. He has travelled the world, spending time in Europe, six months in New York and a year in Australia where he took part in a sky dive over the Great Barrier Reef and worked at the Melbourne Grand Prix. In 2004 Andrew’s mother died of breast cancer and for Andrew this was a sink or swim moment. He ran the London marathon, raising £2,000 for a Breast Cancer Charity despite very little training and no experience. A year later he was back again and really enjoyed the challenge of the run, the healthy lifestyle and the buzz of the competition. Many local running competitions have followed including the Tavy 7 and half marathons, as well as unconventional events like the Leaky Freaky Duathlon at Roadford Lake: a 5k run, 40k cycle out to
Looking for something more diverse, the pair attempted a duathlon comprising a run, followed by a bike ride and then a further run. Success in these events encouraged them to try triathlons and then Olympic distance triathlons in Cardiff and Chester which include a 1-mile swim, then a 25-mile cycle and finish with a 10km run. Andrew took part in his first triathlon at Blenheim Palace in 2015 and managed an unexpected 23rd place out of 268 competitors, which spurred him on to tackle more ambitious events such as the Great North Run. However soon he and Nathan were after a more ambitious challenge. Andrew competed in his first half Ironman competition last year in Weymouth and his second in Staffordshire this summer under oppressive temperatures of 32 degrees. The 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile cycle and 13.1-mile run seem such an impressive feat to me, and Andrew explains that in order to maintain fitness levels he trains every day, fitting in 5 miles of swimming at Mount Kelly, over 180 miles of cycling and 20 miles of running each week in between shifts. He really enjoys training and the healthy diet that accompanies it. He’s hoping to complete the Ironman hat-trick in Barcelona next year. For the last three years he has worked at the Co-op in Yelverton and says he loves it because he has made so many friends there. When he’s out training he always sees people that know him and they wave or shout hello. He recently fell off his bike and was rescued by a customer who recognised him and generously took him to A&E. Nathan recently qualified to represent Team GB in the World Triathlon Championships in Rotterdam which has encouraged Andrew to enter the duathlon championships in Bedford this month where he is hoping to qualify to represent Team GB in Ibiza this month. So next time you pop in for a loaf of bread, pint of milk or paper, look out for Andrew and if he’s not there I guess he’ll be out on the moor either running, cycling or swimming. Nichola Williams 19

administrator, I developed a right shoulder injury. At the time, I had also been caring for elderly relatives who had come to live with us, and somehow over the course of time an initial ache had transformed into a pain and it would not go away. My shoulder was giving me serious grief. Eventually I went to see my GP and was prescribed pain killers. I was also referred to the orthopaedic department at Derriford Hospital. A year later and after several scans and tests I managed to see a very thoughtful consultant, who explained that there was no surgical solution to
hope than expectation. The initial assessment was extremely detailed and the physiotherapist was very patient. She asked lots of sensible questions and then set about developing a bespoke treatment plan. I was introduced to a course of physiotherapy and acupuncture, and the shoulder responded. I was supplied with some specific exercises to practise at home between appointments, and between these and my regular physiotherapy treatments the shoulder improved. At first the pain reduced, then the mobility began to return.

As I saw the improvement I decided to attend the shoulder rehab class at Tavistock Physio Clinics, and this really helped in my recovery. My physiotherapist then suggested a clinical Pilates class to improve my core strength and flexibility, so I joined this and I now enjoy a class every week. Recently I have joined the Women Only Workout: a mixture of core, shoulder, knee, coordination and balance exercises which gets my cardiovascular system ticking over properly. Today I no longer require pain killers and I enjoy a full range of movement in my shoulder. Hooray! This is just one of many similar such stories we could have shared, and we hope it will encourage you not to ‘just put up with’ any aches and pains that you or a close friend or family member may have. There are of course many other conditions, ranging from painful back, neck or other spinal conditions to aching knees, hips, elbows, wrists and feet, to name but a few, that physiotherapy can successfully help treat. Current
evidence-based research confirms the benefits of combining treatment with a carefully planned rehabilitation exercise programme, which should be assessed and progressed on a regular basis. We all want to stay active and enjoy life to the full, so remember you don’t have to put up with pain! Jane Hyde Tavistock Physiotherapy Clinics, Pilates and Health and Rehab Gym

CHARITY FOCUS
CHARITY FOCUS
Riding for the Disabled Association Incorporating Carriage Driving The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) was founded in 1969 to provide opportunities for therapy, achievement and fun for people with disabilities - today it is at the forefront of equineassisted therapy. Over 25,000 riders and carriage drivers take part in RDA’s core activities of riding, carriage driving and show jumping at the charity’s 482 UK groups, supported by 18,000 volunteers. There are no age restrictions and few restrictions in terms of disability, as long as facilities and the welfare of the horses allow. Referrals are usually made by doctors, physiotherapists or schools, but any disabled person can apply to join a group. One of the charity’s biggest challenges is meeting demand.
Therapy The therapeutic benefits of horses for people with physical and learning disabilities are wide-ranging. RDA has recently published a report detailing the therapeutic changes experienced by new riders which revealed that 80% demonstrated physical improvement in just 12 weeks. Similar numbers showed good outcomes in communication skills, confidence, relationship building as well as horsemanship. RDA’s strapline is ‘It’s what you can do that counts’, and it’s this focus on ability that many riders and drivers find even more significant than the physical benefits. The key therapeutic factor is the movement of the horse, which encourages a strengthening of the rider’s core muscles. As a physiotherapist explained in a recent training lecture, “The horse at walk produces 1000 movements in 3 dimensions in 10 minutes. The rider must respond to these movements in order to stay in balance with the horse. This is far more movement than can be produced in the average physiotherapy session!” Since RDA’s activities are also fun, riding is a great way to deliver therapy that otherwise might be too painful or too repetitive to be carried out effectively at home or in hospital. As one rider put it: “Horse riding is a form of physical exercise which I really enjoy – it doesn’t feel like exercise at all... and who wants to sit on bouncy balls in a physiotherapy room, 22
when you can sit on a horse and achieve the same things without realising it?”
Competition The RDA National Championships is the pinnacle of RDA’s ‘can do’ philosophy and the event is now the biggest of its kind in the world for disabled riders and drivers. It takes significant effort for riders, carriage drivers, supporters, volunteers and horses to get there, as well as weeks of planning, months of fundraising and hours of regular riding lessons – but there’s no doubt how much it means to the competitors. Great Britain’s para-equestrian team at Rio 2016 Paralympics started their careers with the support of RDA. Paralympian triple gold medallist, Sophie Christiansen was born prematurely with cerebral palsy, which affects all her muscles including her speech. Despite limited use of her limbs, she is one of Britain’s most successful horsewomen and credits her success to RDA, which helped her begin riding at the age of six.
Local groups RDA is a community of voluntary self-governing charities under the ‘umbrella’ of RDA National. Each group is responsible for its own finances and management, with the national organisation providing guidance, advice, workshops and ensuring continuity of standards. There are three local groups: Erme Valley Riding for the Disabled Ltd, Ugborough is the largest group in the South West region and has been in operation for 34 years, run entirely by volunteers. It caters for riders between the ages of 2 and 70 with a range of disabilities, special needs and social or emotional problems. It has a purpose-built venue with a range of specialist equipment and a small group of specially chosen and trained horses. The group offers riding, therapy, horse care, life skills and equine assisted education, improving the health and wellbeing of the riders, whilst creating opportunities for success, confidence and enjoyment. It caters for 80 riders per week, which is approximately 3,500 sessions per year and also offers a social club and work experience for those with special needs.
Carriage Driving Group, Tavistock is particularly beneficial for people who can no longer ride, and just as fun for those who want a new challenge. The purpose-built carriages have wheelchair access, so tuition can be offered to both ambulant and non-ambulant participants. The group is fortunate to have permission to drive through parts of the Tavistock Woodlands Estate and the Tamar AONB, and drivers can enjoy an area of the woodland generally inaccessible to disabled people, at the same time as learning the art of carriage driving. Duchy College Group, Stoke Climsland rides on Wednesday afternoons during term time and the majority of riders are adults.
and accompany the rides and drives, as well as raise the considerable funds needed to keep delivering this incredible service. Elisabeth Dill
Support The RDA helps people who want the challenge and fun of regular riding and driving, as well as competitors whose hard work, determination and skill take them to the top of their sport. However, all of this achievement relies on the continued support of thousands of volunteers, and even more manpower is needed to meet the growing demand. All the groups are run entirely by dedicated volunteers who generously give their expertise, time and effort to train the ponies, manage

At the end of summer term Meavy School invited all primary school age children to run the inaugural Meavy Madness run. Children from reception to year 6, from 11 different schools ran in glorious sunshine through the woods above Meavy School along three exciting courses of 1km, 2km and 5km. All the participants were incredibly impressive from the older children braving the heat, gradients and gorse on the 5km, to the youngest children giving their parents a run for their money. Many children were taking part in their first race and all were suitably proud of themselves and their finishers’ medal. We hope to see even more of you at the 2018 Meavy Madness Run!
St Andrew’s Primary School pupils excel in sport Over the last year our sporting teams have had some fantastic achievements and we are particularly proud that St Andrew’s qualified to represent West Devon in the county finals in tag rugby, hockey, indoor athletics and cricket. The children have also taken part in both Tavistock Area Schools and West Devon tournaments competing well in handball, dodgeball, tennis, swimming, cross-country and triathlon. The much-awaited PTA triathlon last term was a great success kicking off with a warm-up led by Stacey O’Conner and a fun run for KS1 before KS2 showed everyone what they were
made of in the main event. The parent marshals could not believe how fast the children completed all the stages, and have already started training in order to keep up with them next year. The event was supported by Tesco Tavistock and sponsor money collected by the participants raised over £1000 for Cancer Research UK. We are also really pleased that St. Andrew’s was awarded gold in the School Games Mark, which is a government-led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition in physical education across their school and the community. As this is the second year the school has achieved gold, we are delighted to have been invited to apply for the new platinum award which opens in October.

Autumn gardening
Seasonal jobs
Looking good
As another challenging growing season draws to a close, step back and take a hard look at the garden…
Plant bulbs in a wealth of places: pots, raised beds, borders, or to naturalise in grass. Choose a range of flowering times to enjoy fabulous colour from late winter right through to early summer.
Autumn is a good time to assess what’s worked well – and what hasn’t – in order to plan any changes over the coming months. These could be small ones like moving plants that are in the wrong place and reshaping existing borders, or major structural work like creating new borders, adding a path, seating area or raised beds. A garden needs to evolve over the years as needs change: as families arrive, grow or leave; as free time expands or contracts; or as physical abilities alter. Autumn to early spring is the ideal time to carry out any landscaping work, so everything can be complete and planted up in time for the next growing year.
Give evergreen hedges a final trim so they look shapely right through winter.
Berry-bearing shrubs and trees started colouring early this year. Hip-bearing shrub roses have some of the largest and showiest hips that last for months - those of Rosa moyesii are brilliant red and urn-shaped, while Rosa rugosa are bright orange-red. (The latter makes an excellent hedge too).
The coming dormant months are perfect for planting all hardy stock like trees, shrubs, hedges, perennials, roses and fruit bushes, so they can get well settled in before the spring rush of growth. A few colourful evergreens close to the house can really lift the spirits and cheer up the coming dark months. Find the spots most often viewed from indoors and plant up some tubs for winter colour, using plants like red-stemmed dogwood, golden variegated euonymus, heucheras with scalloped leaves in a range of gorgeous shades, and dainty violas or pansies. Even when the weather does its worst, you’ll be able to sit indoors and enjoy the view.
Protect winter greens like brassicas, using netting to keep pigeons at bay. Sow mixed salad leaves under cover – even a windowsill trough will provide good pickings. Clean out the greenhouse before filling with tender plants for the winter. Sweet peas can still be sown now if you’re quick - autumnsown plants are much sturdier than spring-sown ones and bloom earlier too. Sow under cover and keep in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse over winter.

Late-flowering bulbs appear as if by magic: flowering stems suddenly pop up from bare ground, as leafy growth was over and done earlier in the year. Bubblegum-pink nerines love sunbaked spots while autumn crocus and colchicum are happy in sun or partial shade.

Sue’s top tips Thrifty: Seed heads, stems and other dryable plant material like hops, all make gorgeous Christmas decorations. Harvest now, though, or they’ll be wind-battered and spoilt by the time you need them. Pick on a dry day and store in a cool place like a shed or garage. Spraying with clear varnish (or even hairspray) helps keep material in good condition. Wildlife: Plant autumn-flowering perennials, rich in

nectar, to feed butterflies that are getting ready to hibernate or migrate. Michaelmas daisies (Aster) and ice plant (Sedum spectabile) are reliable favourites that are easy to grow. Less common is the herbaceous Clematis heracleifolia, which bears hyacinth-scented flowers for many weeks.
‘Green’: Don’t dig your soil but instead, nurture it by spreading organic matter on top for worms and other soil organisms to take down. Soil stores carbon, but digging it releases carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere and increases erosion. Time saving: Clear weeds now and you’ll have far less
to do next spring when there will be loads going on in the garden. Pull large weeds out by hand and, on a dry day, hoe off seedlings. Veg beds and other areas that will be left empty over winter, can be kept weed-free by covering with landscape fabric, flattened cardboard boxes or old carpet.
Favourite plant: Katsura tree (Cerdiphyllum japonicum)
combines beautiful autumn leaf colour with delicious scent: as the leaves start to turn colour, they give off a candyfloss-like smell of burnt sugar. The rounded leaves are also attractively tinted in spring and look good through summer too. Although it does grow large over time (in excess of 10 metres), so not for small gardens. 01822 841895 suefisher@talktalk.net www.suefishergardens.co.uk

Wildlife to look out for this Autumn…
Image : Woodland Jay
October is the month when late-staying summer visitors such as swallows and house martins, shortly heading off for Africa, overlap with early winter visitors like redwings and fieldfares from Scandinavia. These winter thrushes feed voraciously on hawthorn berries when they arrive and may be joined by blackbirds, and song and mistle thrushes, as well as the occasional late ring ouzel. It is always worth looking carefully at berry-laden trees in autumn and winter. Mistle thrushes may occupy a single berry-laden bush and defend it against all other birds. In some winters when the berry crop fails or is poor in Scandinavia, large numbers of waxwings will ‘invade’ the east coast and small numbers of them may reach the South West. Another sight to savour in late autumn are the flocks of golden plovers flying around and settling on the moor; Sharpitor and Cox Tor are both reliable areas to watch out for these goldenbrown wader flocks, sometimes numbering several hundred. In some cold winters there may be several thousand birds using the moor.
Offices also located at Mutley Plain & Torpoint, but if you are unable to attend at the office, we offer HOME VISITS!
An unobtrusive woodland bird, the jay, which is chestnutcoloured with a white rump and brilliant blue ‘shoulder’ patch (or alula), is more often heard than seen. However, the autumn is a crucial time for jays, which depend heavily on acorns for winter food. As many as 3000 acorns can be collected and buried by a single jay, and studies have shown that the jay retrieves around half of all the buried acorns. This gathering of acorns is so important to jays that in years when the acorn crop fails, parties of jays may move large distances in search of acorns.
Very little birdsong is heard in autumn. From August onwards robins sing their ‘wistful’ and ‘laid-back’ autumn song, very different to their much more vigorous spring song. Though different in nature, both songs proclaim the robin’s territory as robins are one of the few British birds that are territorial throughout the year. A few woodpigeons and collared doves continue to sing occasionally (one is singing as I write), and both may well still have young in the nest until October or even November. For those interested in insects, autumn can be an exciting time, with migrant butterflies, moths and dragonflies turning up every year. Just like many autumn leaves, so glorious with their rich display of colours, some of these autumnal insects have beautiful golden-yellow, chestnut or reddish-brown wings – moths with names such as the Canary-shouldered thorn, Pink-barred sallow, Chestnut and the Red-line quaker. By October hedgehogs should have accumulated sufficient fat reserves (they should weigh at least 1 pound, or 450 grams) to enable them to survive the winter. They build winter nests, typically on the ground and mostly made of leaves, in preparation for hibernation. During hibernation their body temperature drops from 35 degrees centigrade to 10 degrees or less, and their heart rate slows to 20 beats per minute or less. If the weather remains mild into November and even December, hedgehogs will remain active until cold weather sets in. Tony John

FARMING DIARY
Travelling abroad with Children At Wolferstans we have received lots of enquiries from parents over the summer holidays this year asking about their rights to travel abroad with their children. If you are separated or divorcing, you shouldn’t just assume that you can travel with your children without putting some provisions in place. The first thing to think about is who has Parental Responsibility; everyone with Parental Responsibility needs to give their consent to a child travelling abroad. We always advise clients to speak to the other parent about holiday plans. This includes giving plenty of notice, providing full information about how you will be travelling, where you will be staying, who you will be travelling with and providing emergency contact numbers. In most circumstances, the parent not travelling with the child will be happy to give their consent to the holiday. After all, who doesn’t want their children to have the opportunity to travel and experience another culture! Consent does need to be in writing. We are hearing increasing numbers of stories of passport control asking for confirmation that absent parents consent to their child’s travel. This is more common where you have a different surname from your child. Because of the increase in enquiries we have seen, we have a standard consent form that we can now offer our clients. We also advise taking evidence of your relationship to your child if you do have a different surname, such as a copy birth certificate or evidence of your name change.

Sometimes, parents don’t consent to foreign travel. This can be because they don’t feel that they have been consulted about the travel plans or because they are worried about the safety in the country where the holiday will take place. Good communication between parents means that these issues are normally avoided. However, if you find yourself unable to agree travel arrangements with your expartner, then you can make an application to Court for a Specific Issue Order seeking the Court’s permission to travel. The Court will want to see that the travel plans are organised and safe and as long as the Court considers it is in the child’s best interests to travel then they will normally allow it. We would always advise avoiding an application to Court if possible – you are going to look forward to your holiday a lot more if you don’t have to go to Court first! For advice about Parental Responsibility and travelling abroad with children, contact our experienced family law team on 01752 292288.

Looking to the future Mat Cole urges us to get involved with our local parish plans. With both boys now at school, my wife Gem has more available time to help with farm business and although working with your wife may have its moments, it will be great to spend more time with her and allow her to really engage with the business. I have a long list of projects for her to tackle and she assures me she is looking forward to it. I have obviously given her the chat that I am the boss and she will be coming in at the coal face...Wish me luck...! Gem has also become involved with the local parish plan group which is engaging the local community to put together a body of work that represents the parish residents’ vision for how our community should look in the future. Sounds easy doesn’t it? But of course, everyone has an opinion on what his or her community should look like. The main issue of the plan itself seems to be getting it out to the larger portion of the neighbourhood as a whole and not just the few who are happy or have the time to shout their opinions from the roof tops. The issues facing our area are as varied as any parish, but can also be quite area specific. As a farmer running a business in this community I thought I might share with you some of my thoughts. These are of course my thoughts and you may or may not agree! I hope that if you live in my own parish of Burrator or any other parish that might be undergoing a similar exercise, this may help you to engage in that conversation about the future of our local communities. Here in the south west corner of Dartmoor, we are very blessed with wonderful scenery, areas to enjoy and places to visit - a playground for locals and thousands of visitors alike. Personally I would like to see more opportunities for visitors to financially help this area whilst they are visiting, with more ways to spend their pounds, in turn giving more money to help the local economy. One example, which sticks out locally, is Burrator reservoir. This area is a real honey pot for visitors, with thousands of people walking, cycling and running around it every year. The only opportunity for people to help the local economy here is via one small ice-cream van! Perhaps this
See our new community website www.dartmoorlinks.co.uk
area could be sensitively developed to create more local jobs, with small businesses working on and around the lake? The visitors are already coming and their numbers will undoubtedly only increase, so why not work to manage them by offering more, to help give back to the local economy? There are of course wider issues that affect a rural community, such as access to good broadband speeds, planning, lack of business space, house prices and housing stock, lack of local opportunities for the younger generation – many of whom leave the area as a result. In what ways can we improve these situations or help to stop young people from leaving? For our area, wealth is often the only access for incomers or those wishing to stay and as such we are at risk of becoming a retirement village with a NIMBY attitude. Is this what we want for our own and our children’s future? There are also issues specific to running a farm here on Dartmoor. The landscape we all love, and that visitors come to in droves, is due to the hard work of local farmers and the animals they keep. Farmers are put under tremendous pressure from people, dogs, traffic, parking, damaged crops, erosion, fly tipping, green laning, and a great deal more - all of which has to be dealt with on top of our daily businesses of running farms (much of which, to a certain extent, we have learnt to live with). But projects like this parish plan although small fry in the greater scheme of things, may just help focus our minds on these issues and how they could be dealt with more effectively. We must also remember that we do not live in a museum, but in a community which lives and breathes and must be allowed to evolve and change with the ebb and flow of local needs and where necessary develop opportunities as well as tackle those small issues which if left, could easily get a lot worse. So when your questionnaire arrives, for whichever parish you belong to, please don’t just throw it away. Have your say! Mat Cole, Greenwell Farm, Dartmoor

Walkham – A Walker’s Guide to a Beautiful Dartmoor Valley by Peter Swaine There are still a few copies available of Peter’s excellent guide to the Walkham Valley, containing over 200 photographs and detailed route descriptions for all the walks. Peter has been a member of Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team (Tavistock) for over 20 years and is now the deputy team leader. All profits from the book will be donated to DSRT (Tavistock).
Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Tavistock Dartmoor is a superb recreational area for a host of sports, but what happens when something goes wrong? Emily Woodhouse joined the Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team for Tavistock as a trainee two years ago, and after passing her final assessment in January, has become a valuable team member - on a recent call out she was the one who spotted a missing person hidden behind rocks in the early hours of the morning. So what does it take to work with DSRT… It’s dark. It’s raining. The mist has come in so close that I can barely tell the bog from the tussock in my torch light. I’m here out of choice. Dartmoor Search and Rescue operations began in Tavistock almost 50 years ago catalysed by the death of two young army cadets on Dartmoor. DSRT was designed to be a specialised response team, capable of dealing with Dartmoor’s unpredictable weather patterns and unforgiving terrain, using exceptional local knowledge and navigation skills. There are now four independent Dartmoor Search and Rescue teams based in Tavistock, Plymouth, Okehampton and Ashburton, covering the four compass points of the moor. These four charities make up Dartmoor Rescue Group – an organisational body that keeps a consistency of structure and purpose between the four teams. This in turn is part of the Peninsular Mountain and Cave Rescue Association (PenMaCRA) and above that, Mountain Rescue England and Wales.

Do we have any mountains on Dartmoor? - a handful - but the general reputation for flatness often leads to a misjudgement of difficulty and conditions. It may ‘just’ be Dartmoor, but the weather can turn from sunny to foul without any notice at all. Walkers can leave home in the sunshine only to experience rain, fog, hail and sunshine again – possibly before they even reach the car park. Very often it’s the people who were caught out by a sudden drop in the cloud level, and then darkness, who find themselves stranded - or the people who didn’t realise the unassuming stretch of ground in front of them could be knee-deep bog. DSRT Tavistock has almost 40 team members on its callout list. We are on call all day, every day, ready to respond whenever the message comes – be it at 1:00am on a work night, sitting down to dinner or during children’s birthday parties. People really do drop everything to respond. You never know when a call out is coming and you never know how long it will take. Call outs can last from minutes to days, depending on the incident. The air ambulance might have reached the casualty as we are deployed, or we might be out for 8 hours and eventually replaced by another team on a prolonged search. Although we are volunteers, we work alongside the other emergency service personnel and train to a professional standard. Our training covers first aid, navigation, technical ropework and search techniques. Most of our deployments fall into one of these areas and all team members are required to be competent in these basic skills. On top of this, there are specialist courses in water rescue, 4x4 driving and search management – to name a few. Team members can also train a search dog as part of SARDA (Search and Rescue Dogs Association).

From the source high up on the north moor to its confluence with the Tavy at Double Waters, the Walkham passes through an astonishing variety of landscape, and the walks reveal the landscape and history of this wonderful valley. Details of stockists can be found at www.dsrt-tavistock.org.uk or for mail order email book@dsrt-tavistock.org.uk. Price: £20 (+ p&p if applicable)
Call outs on Dartmoor include many of the situations you’d expect; people can be lost and caught out in the dark, injured and in need of swift transport to hospital or mentally ill. However, we also take part in rural off-moor searching and are occasionally called out of area to assist other Mountain Rescue teams in Cornwall, North Devon or once even as far as York in the 2015 flooding. When I started out as a trainee, I had no idea how much of my life Dartmoor Rescue would take up. It sounds ridiculous to say, but there is so much more to it than being on call all day every day. We train at least once every week, plus specialist courses, optional training, meetings… and fundraising and community events on top of that! It can easily become a second, unpaid, full time job. There are weeks when I can end up in a red jacket, or on team related business, every single day. We call it ‘one of those weeks’, but if we didn’t enjoy it, we’d never put in that much time and effort. There is, as far as I have found, nothing more satisfying or rewarding than helping people in need and, even just occasionally, saving lives in the process.
Advice for staying safe on Dartmoor Take a map and compass and ensure you know how to use them. We have had numerous call outs to rescue walkers relying on a phone GPS or compass app that has failed. Be properly equipped for the terrain and changeable weather. Walkers sometimes stumble out of a bog in flip flops or get completely drenched wearing a summer dress and wellies. Take a phone in case of emergency. You will be able to call for help and we might be able to locate you more quickly. Tell someone else where you’re going and when you expect to be back. If something happens, they’ll be able to raise the alarm sooner and give us a general idea of your location.
Emily Woodhouse www.dsrt-tavistock.org.uk If you would like to donate to the team, text ‘DART03’ and the amount to 70070. 41

Pudsey Day of Morris
Cheshire Cats
Following the Dartmoor Border Morris (DBM) appearance in The Black Farmer TV commercials last year, our Morris side is now appearing on a new advertising campaign for The Black Farmer which is cropping up on bus shelters all over Devon and Cornwall. Fame hasn’t gone to our heads though and DBM members are as busy as ever, practising new dance moves in Meavy Parish Hall on Wednesday nights and then sharpening musical skills afterwards in the Royal Oak Inn until the landlord chucks us out.
Tavonians Theatre Company is back on the road in October and November with ‘Cheshire Cats’, a laugh-out-loud comedy play by Gail Young. Camaraderie, frayed relationships and blisters are to be expected when a team of women from Cheshire decide to speedwalk their way to fundraising success in the London Moonwalk. But along the way this cleverly crafted comedy will not only have you laughing out loud but also feeling the deep emotion associated with the Moonwalk’s aim which is to raise money for breast cancer. In their decorated bras and posh new trainers the girls are up for the challenge, but when one of the team can’t make it, the substitute 6th member of the team doesn’t exactly meet the physical criteria! At the end of the 13 miles of aching feet, heaving bosoms, friendships and tears, the walkers will have a stitch in their sides, but so too will the audience, from laughing out loud.
Our diverse Morris side has spent the summer dancing at pubs all over Dartmoor, raising money for our chosen charity, Global Action Nepal - Ann Marcer, our deputy dance instructor, was actually working in Nepal when the devastating earthquake struck in 2015. We are now organising our famous ‘Pudsey Day of Morris’, held every November in Tavistock`s Bedford Square, with up to ten other Morris sides dancing during the day and finishing with a to-die-for Morris music session in the Tavy Club! We would like to say a big thank you to the
generous people of Tavistock who kindly donated £1340 to Children in Need at last year’s event, as well as the businesses that helped to make the day go so well. We are looking for new musicians of any type and calibre, as long as they play acoustically and their instrument is portable. It`s Morris, how much fun can you have? For more information, look us up at www.dartmoorbordermorris.com or like our Facebook page. You can contact us on treggie@blueyonder. co.uk or 01752 299700.

One pawsome event that all pet owners in Tavistock can look forward to is the Festive ‘Doggy Day Out’, organised by Miss Ivy Events on Sunday 5th November. With a pet shopping zone in the Pannier Market, fun dog shows (£1.50 to enter - all proceeds go to Gables Farm) doggy tea party, Pets Got Talent show, and pet photo-booth, it promises to be a doozy of a day out in Tavistock for all pets, and their humans.
See our new community website www.dartmoorlinks.co.uk
The ‘Doggy Days Out’ started in Tavistock last November and have seen up to 2500 dogs and owners at some of the events over the summer, in addition to raising more than £3,500 for local animal charities. Jo Macaskie and her partner Mark Shaw fell in love with Max, a collie/lurcher cross puppy, when they visited Gables Farm Dogs & Cats Home in 2015. Jo, the owner of Miss Ivy Events, was so impressed at the work being done at Gables Farm to re-home rescued animals, that she decided she wanted to help the charity. She has made donations to Gables Farm and Woodside Animal Welfare Trust amongst others, by offering stands and hosting dog shows throughout the South West this year, as well as producing a calendar for Gables Farm. The Bedford Hotel, Doggy Devon and Tavy & Moor Links are pleased to sponsor this event. The ‘Doggy Day Out’ will be held in Tavistock Pannier Market 10:30 - 16:30 with tickets priced at £1.50 for adults and under 12s free. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead at all times.

annual community firework display in Tavistock Meadows. Gates to the Meadows at the Tavistock College end will open at 6:15pm with the display starting at 7pm prompt. The firework display will be staged by the local award-winning company Two Tigers, which over the past few years has provided some of the best displays ever seen in Tavistock. The Lions will also be running a BBQ on site from 6:15pm, so come early and enjoy a well-cooked burger or a hot dog washed down with a nice hot chocolate or a tea or a coffee.
Wave is one of two sculptures taken from the installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red which was originally displayed at HM Tower of London in 2014 incorporating 888,246 poppies - one for every British or Colonial life lost at the Front during the First World War. The CWGC Plymouth Naval Memorial was built and is maintained by the Commission to commemorate almost 7,300 servicemen and women of the First World War who have no known grave but the sea.
Entrance: Adults £5 and accompanied children will have free entry; entry for unaccompanied children under 16 is £1. For more details visit www.tavistocklions.org.uk, the Lions Facebook page or call 08458 334807.
The sculpture will be open until 19 November, with volunteers trained by the CWGC on hand from 10am to 6pm daily to tell the story of the Wave, the Commission and its memorial. The iconic poppy sculpture is part of the UK-wide tour organised by 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary.
Royal College of Midwives drop their ‘normal birth’ campaign Every day there are 27 incidents resulting in death or serious harm following failures by medical staff. Heartbreakingly, it is estimated that of these incidents, around 4 per week are babies who are left brain damaged by NHS mistakes. One of most serious injuries that a baby can suffer is brain trauma caused during the birth as a result of decreased oxygen and blood flow to the brain. Thankfully such brain trauma is rare but if your child has suffered a brain injury the consequences can be life changing. In August the Royal College of Midwives dropped their 12 year long campaign for so called ‘normal birth’ and will no longer encourage women to have babies without medical intervention. The campaign had been criticised for many reasons but more so after it was revealed that a mother and 11 babies died at the Morecambe Bay NHS Trust between 2004 and 2013. In June the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists published its “Each Baby Counts” document which documented all cases in 2015 where full term babies had died or suffered brain damage. Unfortunately in 25% of the cases the documentation and local level investigation was too poor to take these cases into account but in 76% of the residual cases it found that the injuries were avoidable if proper care had been given during childbirth. There are several different causes of brain damage in babies at birth with the most common being physical trauma in assisted delivery such as tools (forceps or ventouse) being improperly placed causing damage to the babies head, a starvation of oxygen to the baby during the birth, untreated maternal infection, such as group B Strep, or untreated jaundice. Wolferstans are pleased to be a member of the Brain Injury Group which exists to support individuals and families affected by brain injury, and the health and social care professionals working in this specialist field. We are also Panel Members for Headway and Group B Strep Support and have extensive experience of dealing with claims of all types.

Horrabridge Nativity Scene Festival The Festival of Nativity Scenes at St John’s, Horrabridge, is now in its fourth year and is fast becoming a regular attraction in the pre-Christmas period. Most of the village organisations contribute nativity scenes for display in the church in a wide variety of materials. Exhibits are also produced by neighbouring churches and by individuals, filling every nook and cranny of the church. Scenes are constructed from cardboard, wood, flowers, felt, paper, material, candles and any other material you can imagine. The ingenuity of the designs is amazing, and scenes have even been made in the form of Minions, as well as one with the baby Jesus in a table tennis net for a crib. Stars, candles and lights abound and the whole effect
is magical, enhanced by visiting organists playing in the background. This year’s festival is again being enthusiastically supported by many groups and individuals and is sure to be just as wonderful. Do drop in and see it. Entry is by donation and refreshments in the form of tea, coffee and cake are available. The Festival ends with a carol service followed by mulled wine at 4.30pm on 10th December. The exhibition is open daily from 10.30am – 4.30pm, except Sundays when it opens at 12 noon.

Behind the scenes at Cotehele House in winter
Autumn at the Abbey At Buckland Abbey we’re welcoming the autumn months with plenty of things to see and do around the house, gardens and estate. The Art of Reflection: Andrew Logan at Buckland Abbey continues in various locations across the property and interprets the history and spirit of the abbey with 18 sculptures. The exhibition, one of the largest ever staged by the National Trust in collaboration with one artist, is curated jointly by Buckland Abbey and Andrew Logan, with work selected from five decades of the artist’s career, organised under the conservation charity’s Trust New Art contemporary art programme. Whilst you are here, you won’t want to miss the chance to see the Rembrandt self-portrait in the dining room, and the Drake portrait in Treasures too. Once you’ve enjoyed your visit to the house, why not try one of the estate walks to admire the autumn colour, with stunning views across the Tavy Valley, or simply sit and soak up the peace and tranquility of the gardens. For the intrepid explorers out there, the Medieval Beast Hunt is a great way to discover the woodlands, whilst searching for the creatures that once lived in them!
No visit is complete without a trip to the shop, where the autumn/winter range is now on sale with something for everyone. Look out for the monthly ‘Dine Out’ evenings in the restaurant too – the perfect chance to enjoy a special meal in the beautiful surroundings of Buckland Abbey.
Every year the Tudor house at Cotehele closes between November and March. Winter is the time for in-depth cleaning and conservation of its show rooms. Although from the outside it looks like the house might be asleep, inside is a hive of activity.
THE ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CRAFT AND FOOD FAIR
“The phrase ‘putting the house to bed’ can be misleading,” says Lisa Newis, house steward at Cotehele. “The collection doesn’t simply get covered up and left until we open again in the spring. There’s a lot going on and it’s actually the house team’s busiest time of year.”
11 and 12 November, 10am – 4.30pm
Featuring over 45 stalls with local food, drink and crafts as well as music, hot food and a free park and ride service from Harrowbeer, this is an event you won’t want to miss! Admission is £3, or free to National Trust members.
THE ART OF REFLECTION – ANDREW LOGAN Open until February 2018
Buckland Abbey is open daily in October from 10am – 5pm (Abbey opens at 11am). Throughout November, the garden, estate, shop and restaurant are open daily from 10am – 4pm, with the house open by guided tour only on weekdays, and 11am – 4pm on weekends. Geoff Lakeman – Meavy Parish Hall
Plymouth Philharmonic Choir: Monteverdi’s Vespers
Newlyn-born Geoff, patron of the Cornwall Folk Festival, has lived on Dartmoor for more than 40 years and been described as a ‘stalwart of West Country folk and father of a folk dynasty’.
Monteverdi’s Vespers has been described as a towering masterpiece. It is intimate and grand, prayerful and dramatic, exalted and sensual - a dizzying array of textures and sonorities in brilliant instrumental writing, opulent choruses, and moving solo arias and duets.
He likes to tailor his performances to the audience and so at this local Meavy gig he will be taking the opportunity to sing some of his favourites including ‘Farmer’s Song’ about the decline of farming, as well as another agricultural song from Maine in the USA called ‘When the taters are all dug’ which reminds him of ‘the first job he ever did at the age of fifteen picking up spuds in his native West Cornwall for an old shilling
an hour’. After retiring from a 50-year career in journalism - mostly in Fleet Street - Geoff, finally turned his hobby into serious music-making and released his debut solo CD earlier this year at the age of 69 – ‘After All These Years’ is a mix of songs about where he’s from and the people he has lived amongst. He recently played to 1100 people on the main stage at Sidmouth Folk Week, supporting Show of Hands and as a result was asked to join them on a UK tour over the summer. However he says: “There’s nothing better than performing to a smaller audience in a Devon or Cornish village. They are always so enthusiastic and keen to join in choruses. But I hope the audience won’t be that small...let’s fill that hall. Come along and bring your friends!” 7:30pm at Meavy Parish Hall

Wurlitza presents ‘A Cottage on Dartmoor’ Wurlitza is a critically acclaimed five-piece band from South East Cornwall which has been specialising in creating live soundtracks for silent films since 2006. This Anthony Asquith film, ‘A Cottage on Dartmoor’, is a British late silent masterpiece. Said to ‘Out-Hitchcock Hitchcock’ it uses every cinematic technical trick available to create suspense. Like ‘The Artist’ it is a snapshot on the rise of early talking films, cleverly woven into a plot that involves an escaped convict, a love triangle, jealousy and hairdressing.

‘Magical’ Dartmoor-inspired gallery and workshop A new art gallery and workshop in West Devon showcases the work of local professional artists whose work reflects the history and natural world of Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley. Wildwood Arts in Horrabridge has been founded by pen and ink artist Cheri Hunston, fulfilling a dream of bringing together artists to show and share their skills: “The quality of the artists we have in the area is quite extraordinary. I wanted to create a hub for artists here, who feel the same way as I do about nature and about Dartmoor. It is an inspirational and magical place.”

The diverse artists at Wildwood Arts work in ceramics, jewellery, felting, textiles, oils, watercolours, illustration and wood. The one thing that ties them is their focus on the natural environment. For example, you’ll spot Dartmoor sheep’s wool in some of the pieces, while lichen and other foraged items are included in a lot of the displays. Eight of the 20 artisans whose work is represented at the gallery, including Cheri, are members of the Drawn to the Valley group for artists that live and work within the Tamar Valley. One of the artists, Hilary Charlton-Woodgate, also looks after the gallery one day a week. Some of her felt and textiles pieces are designed for the wall, others to be worn, such as her Merino wool and silk waistcoat based on the River Walkham. Tessa Jane, from Yelverton, recycles textiles and other materials for her work, such as her unusual view of Calstock viaduct, which adorns one of the gallery walls. She has been invited to exhibit at the prestigious Earth, Creativity and Sustainability event at the Florence Biennale in October. Clare Law from Callington, whose textured oil paintings depict scenes from the Tamar Valley and surrounding areas,
said: “I lived in London for 12 years and when I came back to Cornwall, I could see a painting everywhere I turned. The gallery is the latest evidence that the area is fast becoming a well-known cultural hub. Wildwood Arts is a wonderful space and the sort of quality outlet that artists need”. Several of the artists at Wildwood Arts will also be running regular workshops, either from the gallery or out on location. Wildwood Arts is open 10am-4pm Tuesday to Saturday and by appointment on Sundays. FOOD & WINE
FOOD & WINE
Top of the Crops Ingredients 1tbs vegetable oil 1 onion chopped 1 garlic clove crushed 1/2tsp ground coriander
Method
Spicy Pumpkin Soup
STEP 3 Place pumpkin and cooking liquid in batches in a food processor or blender, and process until smooth.
STEP 1 Heat oil in saucepan and cook onion over medium heat for 3-4 minutes or until soft. Add garlic, coriander, cumin and chilli and cook for 1 minute longer. STEP 2 Add pumpkin and stock to pan, bring to the boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until pumpkin is tender. Remove pan from heat and set aside to cool slightly.
1/2tsp ground cumin 1/2tsp chilli powder 1kg pumpkin chopped 1L chicken stock (liquid) 90mls thickened cream 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper to taste
STEP 4 Return soup to a clean saucepan, stir in cream, season to taste with black pepper and cook over a medium heat, without boiling, until heated. Serving suggestions - accompany soup with crusty bread and follow with a crisp garden salad. Instead of using a food processor to puree the soup, you can remove the cooked pumpkin from the stock and mash it, using a potato masher or fork, then mix in cooking liquid and complete as in recipe. Vegetable stock can be used. You can also use fresh chilli. Recipe courtesy of the Market Inn, Tavistock
It’s that glorious time of year in our part of the world when growers are rewarded with (hopefully) an abundant harvest. Methods of harvesting have not seen many changes in recent decades with the two main techniques still being by hand or machine. Hand-picking fruit is naturally labourintensive and costly. For smaller producers or in areas of steep terrain, this may be the only viable option. Some larger producers, especially wine makers, choose to hand pick a selected portion of crop for their higher end products to ensure a certain quality of fruit. Mechanical harvesting on the other hand, is efficient, cost effective and flexible. Introduced commercially in the 1960s, it has transformed the industry, enabling the grower to harvest at night when the sugar composition of the grapes is more stable, and avoid early forecasted frosts. In celebration of this time of year, I have chosen a selection of diverse, unique and very English products; perfect for raising a glass to say a huge thanks to the growers and producers.
The Grape Harvest Grapevines first arrived on the shores of England thanks to the Romans. With around 700 vineyards and 130 wineries producing an average of 5 million bottles each year, the UK is edging on to the main stage at a rate of knots. The cool climate here ripens the fruit slowly, producing grapes that bear a delightful fresh vibrant character. An example of an accomplished English wine is Chapel Down’s Bacchus 2016 vintage at £13.49. With an alluring aromatic palate of citrus fruit, gooseberry and nettle, leading to a clean dry finish, this gem from Kent is a ‘must’ with seafood.

apples, or pears which make perry, is roughly from September to November according to apple growth, but certainly by October production is in full flow. Notable varieties include Brown Snout, Dabinett and Kingston Black. Dunkertons Organic Black Fox Cider £2.29 is the perfect English cider. From Herefordshire, slightly off-dry, this sultry cider is crafted from traditional cider apples. Expect to be greeted with a robust explosion of full-flavoured apples followed by a divine bittersweet finish.
The Potato Harvest? Not a food you would associate with an alcoholic beverage, but the humble spud has been used for centuries as an ingredient in vodka. In the late 18th century, potatoes were a much cheaper raw material than cereal grains and were used to make a ‘consolation spirit’ for those who could not afford the grain alternative. Nowadays the tables have turned; potato vodka is generally more expensive and complex to produce. Potatoes are harvested small so they retain their fullest flavour and give the vodka a creamy characteristic. My top of the vodkas has to be Chase Potato Vodka, at £35.50. Using potato varieties such as King Edward and Lady Claire this English vodka is smooth with a naturally sweet and creamy taste and an elegant finish. Tech Tips from ChezvousPC Cold Callers – It may seem obvious, but signing up for a service with someone who called you out of the blue, often isn’t the best idea. We have had customers who have agreed to transfer their phone and broadband over to a ‘new’ provider who got in touch on the land-line, only to discover that they have been transferred onto a phone-only package, and no longer have any broadband at all. A 50% saving isn’t so great if you are only getting 50% of the service! Photos - Are you struggling to send photos via email now Windows Live Mail is out of support? Some providers still have quite low limits for attachments, and resizing manually can be quite a pain. There are some good JPEG photo resize programs which will do a whole folder in one go; we like one available at www.rw-designer.com/picture-resize - you can specify the maximum size (In pixels) of any one dimension, and then you just drag your photos onto the icon, and a resized copy is created. 2000 pixels is a good start point if you want to give it a go. Surge Protection – After August’s lightning issues we feel it is worth re-enforcing the idea that surge protection on your
An update from Tavistock BID… electrical sockets is good, but won’t protect you if you have equipment connected to a telephone line. Consider your router, and all the devices that are connected to it with ethernet cables – these are potentially unprotected if your phone line is hit. There are dongle-style surge protectors available that go between your router and the telephone socket, which drastically reduce the chance of damage occurring - and as they are priced around £5, you have no reason not to get covered!
The summer was extremely busy for Tavistock BID - a huge amount of effort went into the Summer Festival and it definitely paid off with hundreds of visitors attending each day, undoubtedly increasing footfall in the town. As the summer season comes to an end, the hanging baskets have been taken down and BID is now focusing its efforts towards future events for autumn, a Winter Festival and arranging for Christmas trees to be provided to every Tavistock BID business that would like one.
In addition to the summer festival, BID has launched the Visit Tavistock webpage, which is designed to showcase our beautiful town, whilst also providing an inventory of all businesses, hotels and restaurants within the town centre and further afield. This is useful for visitors and locals alike and can be viewed at www.visit-tavistock.co.uk - a Visit Tavistock Facebook page has also been created, full of events and useful information, and can be found by searching Visit Tavistock on Facebook.
Apple Passwords – If you have forgotten your Apple ID password and are struggling with the reset emails, or your account is on an email address you can’t access - try giving Apple a call. We have found their technical support friendly and helpful - a pleasant change from some other large corporations.
The summer although busy, wasn’t necessarily an easy time with the erection of scaffolding in the town centre - creating a potentially negative impact on some businesses. After liaising with the businesses concerned, Tavistock BID, Tavistock Town Council and Tavistock Chamber of Commerce arranged signage to promote ‘business as usual’ for those affected. It is hoped that visitors were not put off by the scaffolding and still appreciated everything that Tavistock has to offer.
Looking ahead to the autumn and winter seasons, Tavistock BID would like to replicate the success of the Summer Festival. Tavistock is magical during autumn and we want to capitalise on that to ensure we keep people visiting. With the new web assets, BID is extremely confident that we will attract more and more visitors. The website receives enquiries from all over the world from potential visitors or people who have visited the town, and is a testament to the fact that Tavistock is doing things right.

A 5-mile walk in the Plym Valley with Bruce Pryde of Tavistock Ramblers.
Walk down the River Plym from Cadover Bridge (SX555646) through woodland to Shaugh Bridge. We return on high ground with wide moorland views and a chance to look at the industrial remains on the way. Walk downstream from the bridge passing through a swing gate, followed by two further gates. Continue on the path with the river in view on your right. The pipe you see on the path was once used to carry china clay to Shaugh Bridge. After a mile go over the stile where there is a National Trust sign for West Down. A third of a mile further on there is an old concrete tank on your right and the path divides. Take the right-hand path and when you reach the gate, follow signs to Shaugh Bridge. The path descends, going over a stile. Just before reaching the road, stay on the path as it turns right and go down the steps. On your right are the old settling tanks for the china clay, where the water was drained off before the clay was transported away. Bear right through the car park and over the wooden bridge. Follow the path as it bends around to the right by the wooden fence and climbs up a paved track. Ignore any paths off to the right. Near the top, the paved track takes a sharp left bend. Continue to follow the track and as it flattens out ignore the paved track

that bends off sharply to the right. You will pass between large granite slabs ahead of you. Stay on the level path, once an old tramway, until it divides. Take the right fork up the inclined plane where granite from the quarry was lowered down on trucks which ran on rails. You can see the remains of the stones used to hold the rails as you climb up. At the top are the remains of the housing for the cable drums. Here turn sharp right along the old track bed. This eventually narrows and climbs to the left to reach the top of Dewerstone Rock. Admire the view before taking the middle of the three paths across Wigford Down, with the river valley far below on the right. Head for the high point to the left of the trees ahead. A field stone wall will come into view on the right. The path follows this around and eventually the car park can be seen. Pass by the ancient stone cross to the road and over Cadover Bridge.

35 years after the Falklands War…
Stephen Earp was an 18-year-old stoker on board HMS Ardent during the 1982 Falklands conflict. Now landlord of The Royal Oak Inn at Meavy, he visited The Falklands in 2016 for the first time since the war and returned again earlier this year for the 35th anniversary of the end of the war. My experiences on board HMS Ardent in the Falkland Sound on the 21st of May 1982 have shaped my life. I felt so guilty for returning from the conflict, when 22 colleagues including two best friends did not come home. For many years I bottled it up and during my first visit the memories came flooding back; it was an extremely emotional time, but helped me come to terms with the experience. I decided to make a second visit to the islands this year as I have fallen in love with the country, the pace of life, and of course, the people. In the Falklands, the 1982 conflict is often mentioned, but already I feel the younger generation is not that interested - they have grown up in a different Falklands from their parents. After the war, a 150-mile fisheries zone was set up which now brings in approximately £20 million a year, providing the Falklands with a very successful fishing industry. The education system is also excellent with every child having the opportunity to go to university free of charge, either back in the UK, or in New Zealand or Australia. Stanley is expanding and the government assists first-time buyers in purchasing or building new homes. Before the conflict there were only 5 miles of roads - now there are over 300 miles, connecting all the communities and farms. The biggest change to the island is the tourist industry with cruise ships dropping off day-trippers to see the wildlife, who then flood into the cafes, pubs and shops in Stanley. 70
The world of genealogy is changing all the time these days, with new information coming online every year. To find out as much as you can about your ancestors, you will need to use as many different sources as possible. There are several online genealogy databases - some are free, and some are subscription only but also sometimes have offers such as a month’s access for £1 - and you can access some of them at libraries.
However, there are still reminders of the conflict - the majority of the beaches are still covered with Argentinian mines, although 35 years on, there is now a concentrated effort to remove them. I visited a number of 1982 memorial sites while I was there, including Fitzroy and San Carlos cemeteries which have been kept immaculately by local residents and were very moving. The museum in Stanley is a fantastic facility and has a very poignant film providing an insight into the childhood memories of the Falklanders during the invasion, and the 74-day occupation. The small museum at San Carlos also has an excellent account of the conflict, including details of HMS Ardent’s involvement. There is still strong support for visiting veterans and over 115 came to the island during 2016. It was great to revisit Goose Green and see that a number of the buildings have been updated, with new families moving into this once thriving community. However, I was very sad to hear that 35 of the 115 residents who were held hostage in the community hall for four weeks during the Falklands conflict, have passed away. I took some time on my own to climb Mount Harriet in the footsteps of 42 Commando Royal Marines and pay my respects. I was then lucky enough to spend time with other veterans from HMS Sheffield, HMS Invincible and the QE2, as well as two veterans from 3 para who took me through their experiences during their tactical advance from Teal Inlet onto Mount Longon, before the final assault into Stanley. I also had an interesting conversation with the current governor of the island, Colin Roberts, about issues caused by Argentinian sanctions. On West Falkland, I visited a number of Argentinian mirage plane crash sites, finding it hard to believe the wreckage was still there after 35 years, looking as if it had only happened
last week. I also visited the grave of Captain John Hamilton (SAS) who was shot just outside the settlement whilst on a reconnaissance mission behind enemy lines. He was awarded the Military Cross for bravery. Port Howard was occupied by over 1000 Argentinians soldiers during the conflict and the museum is well worth a visit. Another internal flight took me to Saunders Island, owned by David and Sue Pole-Evans. The 15x8-mile island is an area of outstanding natural beauty with an abundance of penguins, sea lions and albatrosses. Sue kindly drove me the hour trip to a self-catered hut with only 10,000 penguins as neighbours, but a view to die for; as the sun set, the Gentoo penguins sang on the beach and I was convinced I was in paradise. Back on East Falkland I travelled to the foot of Campito, followed by another hour of off-road driving with islander Dick Swale to reach the summit, where I laid a wreath at the type 21 memorial; from here you can see both the final resting place of HMS Ardent and HMS Antelope and it meant a lot to me to be able to pay my respects. We also visited Ajex Bay, where the 1950s mutton processing plant played a vital role as a field hospital and was the main logistics base during the 1982 conflict. I ended my visit with a trip to the memorial wood on the outskirts of Stanley, which is a fantastic memorial to all the people that lost their life fighting for the islands, with a tree dedicated to each of the ship’s company who failed to come home. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the people of the Falkland Islands for their hospitality during my visit - they are friendly, generous, hard-working, proud and genuine, but most of all British. Stephen Earp

The largest subscription websites are: Ancestry; Find My Past; The Genealogist. All of them have all the census records and civil registration records for England and Wales, but it is always useful to check another site if you cannot find what you seek, as search facilities differ, and sometimes the information is found more easily on a different site. Ancestry and Find My Past also have parish records, military records, immigration and travel records, and social records such as directories, schools and employment, but their coverage varies widely. Ancestry has wills and probate records, Find My Past has 19th century newspapers, while The Genealogist is good for tithe maps and non-conformist records. There are also free websites for genealogical data, but in general they do not cover the same vast range of information. One of the best is Family Search, and it is always worth checking when an ancestor is hard to locate. Others are Free BMD, which has civil registration records, Free Reg for parish records, and Free Cen for census records, although all of these only offer rather patchy information. If you have any Scottish ancestors you will need to use the pay-per-view site Scotland’s People. Civil registration records for Irish ancestors can be found free at Irish Genealogy, while catholic parish register records are available by subscription at Roots Ireland. BOOK REVIEW

Book Review
Come and sample our delicious Autumn menus... the combination of quality local produce, presentation and attention to detail, and value for money offers diners an exceptional experience.
By Natasha Church – Bookstop, Tavistock Silence in the Age of Noise, by Erling Kagge - hardback £9.99 Erling Kagge is a Norwegian explorer who, among other things, has walked solo for 50 days across Antarctica. He is a family man and very aware of, and connected to, the world and its business, yet also knows what it is to be alone and to search his own depths. The remote parts of our planet in which he has spent time, range from Mount Everest to New York’s underground sewage system. I feel inspired by his irrepressible curiosity and experiential perspectives on life. Kagge has been in many landscapes where he dwells in ‘the silence around us’ and this has driven him to further explore ‘the silence within us’. The book acknowledges the ‘emptiness’ and apparent boredom that silence can bring, as well as the creativity. It highlights the essential contrast between sound and silence in sport, music, noisy cities and our minds. The author quotes philosophers, writers and poets, reiterating the importance of tuning into our internal space. Blaise Pascal’s observation that ‘All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone’ feels important in our current, technologically-driven,

THE IMPORTANCE OF LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAs)
&
What are LPAs? LPAs are documents which allow you to appoint a person(s) to have a legal right to act on your behalf in relation to your affairs. There are two types of LPAs which cover very separate aspects of your affairs: - Property and Financial affairs; and Health and Welfare. With both documents you can appoint up to four individuals to act on your behalf and up to four replacements. It is very important to appoint people you trust. Before the LPAs can be used they must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. You can only make a LPA(s) whilst you are still capable of making decisions for yourself. It is required that an independent person signs the LPA(s) to confirm that you have the capacity to do so and that you understand the powers that you are giving – this person is known as a Certificate Provider. At Wolferstans we make no additional charge for acting as your Certificate Provider if we are preparing the LPA(s) for you.

At Wolferstans we recommend that our clients put LPAs in place - they are a useful tool to ensure that you have people you trust to deal with your affairs should you need them to act.
While the author honours science and its need for proof, he writes ‘That which is soundless within you remains a mystery. I don’t think you should expect otherwise’. I loved this book. It’s incredibly easy to read and full of gems. I found nothing superfluous in it, only a constant flow of helpful wisdom.

There would be no-one who could make decisions about the care and medical treatment you receive. An application would need to be made to the Court of Protection to appoint a Deputy. This is an expensive and time consuming process. The person appointed by the Court of Protection to deal with your affairs would not Wolferstans your Wills and Trusts experts, be your own choice. The application for Deputyship Orders can be done in person here for you when you need us but the process is complicated.

TRADE SECRETS
No Gimmicks... No False Promises... Just results...
Trade Secrets Paul Edworthy POULTRY FARMER - THE DARTMOOR POULTRY COMPANY How did you become a poultry farmer? I started rearing poultry for Christmas 15 years ago with just two geese and five turkeys. The Dartmoor Poultry Company has been trading since 2016 and is now a family run business, based in the heart of Dartmoor. We wanted to produce turkeys and geese at the same price, and give families the choice of affordable quality meat at one of the most expensive times of year.
How has your business changed over the years? Growing the online business and courier service has meant that we can now deliver nationwide as well as locally. We have perfected a cool bag system to keep the turkeys at the correct temperature during transport and our courier service delivers them to homes two days before Christmas Day. We did some trial runs to London and Cambridge last year with perfect results. This year we are also producing turkeys for Thanksgiving.

How much training is involved, what qualifications do you need to become a poultry farmer? What would you say to someone thinking of this as a career? As with most farming, you learn how to poultry farm from It is apparent that with any sector of the farming industry, your elders. You don’t need qualifications to become a you need to produce on a large scale in order to make a poultry farmer. However, you do need a slaughter licence and decent turnover. On the scale that we are farming, it really is premises approved by Environmental Health. something that think is more a lifestyle‘...the choice. Meet the team our customers are of ‘...excellent’, very best’, ‘...absolutely first class’ What is involved in being a poultry farmer? In April, we buy our goslings as day-olds from Newland Farm Geese in Tiverton and then in June we get day-old turkeys from Kelly Bronze Turkeys in Essex. We then rear them to full maturity, giving us full control on the end-flavour of the birds. We buy mainly small strain hen birds to produce small turkeys with more breast meat than large strain birds. We feed the birds on natural diets of cereals and clover rich pastures. I am a fully licenced slaughter man so we process all the birds on the farm, hang them for 14 days for full flavour, and then prepare them to sell as oven-ready poultry.
What is the best thing about your job? Job satisfaction is having day-old chicks arrive at the farm and seeing them go through the whole process, reared to a high welfare standard and getting great customer feedback in the new year; it makes it all worthwhile. I also enjoy having input from family members across four generations.
