WELCOME

Fresh air and exercise by the bucket load...

It seems that as fast as Christmas is over, every which way you turn the subjects of losing weight, new exercise routines, healthy eating and generally being more active, are everywhere. This is certainly not a new phenomenon but perhaps with our health system currently being pushed to its limits, it has become a little more pressing than in previous years. We have certainly seen an upsurge in sports like running and cycling since the 2012 London Olympics but it appears that recently more and more of us are taking up new sporting challenges and some form of daily exercise. If you are still feeling the winter blues and struggling to get off the sofa, well this issue of the magazine is packed full of inspiring local people, clubs and organisations that might help give you a bit of a boost. Active Devon are also seeking nominations for this year’s Devon Sports Awards (see page 9) and having only scratched the surface of who and what is available in our area in the magazine – there are clearly plenty of local West Devon sporting heros who should be nominated this year. It would be great to have a future issue of the magazine showcasing these amazing local people – so get nominating! Perhaps some of our unsung heros are those who tirelessly, week in and week out, voluntarily arrange activities or trips for our many organisations. One such organisation is Tavistock Ramblers who over this coming year are celebrating a very successful 40 years of walking. As such for our Feature article John and Malcolm have kindly put down their thoughts on what makes this a great organisation for anyone to join (see page 38 & 39). With numerous years and a great many walks under his belt, John has put together a series of walking books and he has shared one of these walks for us all to do, out at Postbridge, on pages 60 & 61. As ever I do hope you enjoy the contents of this particular issue as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. Reading some of these articles makes me feel I really do need to get away from the computer and walk my dogs quite a bit further – clearly a quick daily loop around Yennadon Down and Burrator, is just not far enough! Enjoy getting out and active…..

VILLAGE NEWS

An update and news from Milton Combe “I’ve ordered a vase online but it’s arrived broken. Is there anything I can do to get my money back?” It may seem logical to complain to the delivery company but it’s actually the responsibility of the retailer to ensure the item arrives in good condition. Call or email their customer service department and explain the situation - you’ll find their contact details on the website or on your order form. You may be asked to email photos of the broken vase to prove it’s damaged. You will then be offered either a refund or a replacement. It’s up to you which one you accept, but if you want a replacement ask for an estimated delivery date so you know when it will arrive. Some retailers ask you to return items that arrive damaged. If that’s the case, you need to repackage the vase and stick the returns label provided on the front of the parcel. Include the returns form, specifying your reason for sending it back. Depending on the retailer, you will either need to post the item through Royal Mail or they may offer to have it collected. You shouldn’t have to pay any postage costs. If you asked for a refund you can expect to be reimbursed within 14 days of the retailer agreeing you’re entitled to one.

Over the last few years we have welcomed many new villagers to Milton Combe, which has boosted the number of children and brought some new life and ideas too. Repairs have been carried out on the exterior of the Village Hall and it is hoped that 2017 will see the interior repainted. The children of the village make good use of the green outside the hall and a new goal has been purchased for those who play football there, including the parents! Over the Christmas and New Year period we have had a wonderful children’s Christmas party. Father Christmas made a visit and everyone had good time. This is a revival of a Milton Combe Tradition made possible by the number of children now living in or associated with the village. We now have a thriving Pilates group on Tuesday evenings and are hoping to start a beginners adult Tap Dancing class on Thursday evenings. If you are interested in this please contact Jo Whiteley on 01822 854758 or email joannewhiteley@live. co.uk. We also have a cake club on the first Wednesday of each month at 10 am. This is a coffee morning with cake and all are welcome. Ideally you would bring a cake (preferably homemade) with you but we would rather see people without cake than they not come at all. As well as the regular events we also have Villages in Action events and recently we were entertained by Cosgrave and Banks, thanks to Villages in Action. Mambo Jambo are here on 23rd March. Tickets will be £15 and this will include a light supper. Contact Val on 01822 854865 if you would like to reserve seats.

VILLAGE NEWS

Buckland Monachorum Neighbourhood Plan goes live! After almost two years in the drafting phase and having been endorsed by the Parish Council, the Buckland Monachorum Neighbourhood Plan (Yelverton, Clearbrook, Crapstone, Milton Combe and Buckland Monachorum) is now ready for residents to read and comment on. This stage is known as ‘Regulation 14 Consultation’ where the Plan is made available to both parishioners and others (such as the Local Authorities and other Government Agencies) to comment on. Once this stage is complete, any changes necessary will be incorporated before the Plan is formally submitted, examined by an independent examiner and a referendum arranged to allow all those on the Electoral Register to vote on whether to accept it or not. What is in the Plan? The Plan sets out proposals and recommends the policies needed to implement those proposals in four areas; residential development, economic development, services and the environment. So it covers issues such as where new housing should be built and what type of housing is most appropriate to meet the needs of the Parish in future years and how other, non residential development should be managed. Other policies are aimed at maintaining the essential character of our villages and protecting our special environment. How will the Plan be used? Provided the Plan gets the approval of residents at the Referendum stage, it will be used by the Parish Council when considering planning applications and other matters affecting the Parish. Once complete it has the same authority as the Local Authorities plans. How can I see the Plan? You can access the Plan by visiting the website - www.bucklandmonachorumplan.co.uk - or by coming along to one of four sessions being held in March 2017 (details below). If you are unable to access the internet and would like to see a copy of the plan, please contact the Parish Council Clerk (01822 615893). How can I comment on the Plan? You can comment ‘on line’ via the ‘comment’ page on the website or by writing to the

Clerk (Gull’s Cry, 1 Courtney Road, Tavistock PL19 0EE) and all comments received will be acknowledged. All comments received will be published together with any proposed changes to the Plan in response to the comments. How long will the consultation period last? The draft Plan must be made available for comment for a minimum of 6 weeks. It is planned to end this consultation round on 31st March 2017. When will the Referendum be held? The Referendum will be organised by WDBC once the Plan has completed its examination stage so a precise date cannot be given. It is hoped that the Referendum will take place in the Summer of 2017. Four ‘village’ meetings have been arranged as follows: 4th March 2017 1000 - 1200 St Paul’s Church Hall, Yelverton 4th March 2017 1400 - 1600 Clearbrook Village Hall 11th March 2017 1000 - 1200 Milton Combe Village Hall 11th March 2017 1400 - 1600 Buckland Monachorum Village Hall

Funeral Planning

& Morris Bros (Tavistock) Ltd

A funeral plan can save you money and provides invaluable peace of mind for you and your family. The reassurance gained from making arrangements in advance and these escalating costs are the reasons why nearly a million people in Britain have taken out a funeral plan. A funeral plan is a thoughtful way of preparing for the future. It enables you to fix the cost of your funeral director’s services at today’s prices, no matter how much this may increase in the coming years. By choosing to plan ahead for your funeral, you and your loved ones will benefit from welcome peace of mind knowing that everything is taken care of in advance. Simon and Lucie Luke are the fifth generation of the Morris family, we live on the premises and we are available to you 24 hours a day.
