WELCOME

Fresh air and exercise by the bucket load... It seems that as fast as Christmas is over, every which way you turn the subjects of losing weight, new exercise routines, healthy eating and generally being more active, are everywhere. This is certainly not a new phenomenon but perhaps with our health system currently being pushed to its limits, it has become a little more pressing than in previous years. We have certainly seen an upsurge in sports like running and cycling since the 2012 London Olympics but it appears that recently more and more of us are taking up new sporting challenges and some form of daily exercise. If you are still feeling the winter blues and struggling to get off the sofa, well this issue of the magazine is packed full of inspiring local people, clubs and organisations that might help give you a bit of a boost. Active Devon are also seeking nominations for this year’s Devon Sports Awards (see page 9) and having only scratched the surface of who and what is available in our area in the magazine – there are clearly plenty of local West Devon sporting heros who should be nominated this year. It would be great to have a future issue of the magazine showcasing these amazing local people – so get nominating! Perhaps some of our unsung heros are those who tirelessly, week in and week out, voluntarily arrange activities or trips for our many organisations. One such organisation is Tavistock Ramblers who over this coming year are celebrating a very successful 40 years of walking. As such for our Feature article John and Malcolm have kindly put down their thoughts on what makes this a great organisation for anyone to join (see page 38 & 39). With numerous years and a great many walks under his belt, John has put together a series of walking books and he has shared one of these walks for us all to do, out at Postbridge, on pages 60 & 61. As ever I do hope you enjoy the contents of this particular issue as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. Reading some of these articles makes me feel I really do need to get away from the computer and walk my dogs quite a bit further – clearly a quick daily loop around Yennadon Down and Burrator, is just not far enough! Enjoy getting out and active…..

COMMUNITY NEWS

“I’ve ordered a vase online but it’s arrived broken. Is there anything I can do to get my money back?” It may seem logical to complain to the delivery company but it’s actually the responsibility of the retailer to ensure the item arrives in good condition. Call or email their customer service department and explain the situation - you’ll find their contact details on the website or on your order form. You may be asked to email photos of the broken vase to prove it’s damaged.

6

You will then be offered either a refund or a replacement. It’s up to you which one you accept, but if you want a replacement ask for an estimated delivery date so you know when it will arrive. Some retailers ask you to return items that arrive damaged. If that’s the case, you need to repackage the vase and stick the returns label provided on the front of the parcel. Include the returns form, specifying your reason for sending it back. Depending on the retailer, you will either need to post the item through Royal Mail or they may offer to have it collected. You shouldn’t have to pay any postage costs.

If you asked for a refund you can expect to be reimbursed within 14 days of the retailer agreeing you’re entitled to one. COMMUNITY NEWS

Nominations for this year’s Devon Sports Awards For clubs, coaches and community sports people alike, the Devon Sports Awards is a prestigious annual event that celebrates their hard work and achievement across a number of different categories. This year marks a special landmark for the Devon Sports Awards which are in their 20th year. To celebrate, there will be a glittering ceremony on June 30 at Sandy Park, Exeter, with a sporting hero as guest speaker. There is still time to nominate and the organisers of the Devon Sports Awards, Active Devon, The Exeter Foundation and Exeter College are urging people to make sure that they use the opportunity to see their clubs, coaches, volunteers and sports stars celebrated and recognised. Matt Evans, chief executive of Active Devon, said: ‘Over the last two decades the Devon Sports Awards have honoured over 600 sports people, clubs, coaches and volunteers. They have helped countless thousands of people in Devon, of all ages and from all backgrounds, to get into sport, stay active or reach fantastic sporting heights. Although it is only possible to formally honour the select few finalists in each category, the Devon Sports Awards is much bigger than that, it really is a celebration of all the unsung heroes who go out in all weathers, week in week out to keep teams, clubs and activities running in Devon.’ This year’s awards ceremony will take place at Sandy Park on June 30th 2017 and if you’d like to see a coach, club or volunteer honoured at the event, nomination forms can be downloaded from www.activedevon.org/dsa2017. Anybody can nominate someone who inspires them and every nomination will be carefully considered by an expert judging panel who come from all backgrounds and bring vast experience to the judging process.

“Each year the Devon Sports Awards aim to recognise as many people as possible who contribute to all levels of sport throughout Devon” said Tony Rowe OBE, Chairman of the Exeter Foundation. “The county has a proud sporting history and it is a privilege of the Exeter Foundation to be able to celebrate this and the bright future of sport in Devon.” The 2017 categories are: Devon Coach of the Year Devon Young Coach of the Year Devon Volunteer of the Year Devon Young Volunteer of the Year Contribution to Inclusive Sport Devon Club of the Year Business Contribution to Sport in the Community Business Contribution to Sporting Activity in the Workplace Performances in Community Sport This year’s nominations are open throughout February and March and nomination information is available at www.activedevon.org/dsa2017
