PRESIDENTS WELCOME
Come and celebrate the town’s rich cultural heritage The beautiful town of Tavistock is always an inspiring place both for its own inhabitants and the many visitors that come every year to soak up its unique atmosphere. Whether it is the bustle of its shops and market, the romance of history in the Parish Church and the Abbey ruins or the wild grandeur of the River Tavy that attract you, there is no better way to complement your appreciation of the town than to immerse yourself in the delights of the Tavistock Festival. The Festival’s broad programme caters for all tastes and interests, and brings together the very best in performers and artists from the South West, and way beyond, to celebrate this special town’s rich heritage. Andrew Wilson
Welcome to our 17th Festival and my first as Chairman. The 2019 Tavistock Festival builds on all that our former Chairman, Christopher Kirwin, has achieved and this year’s programme offers high class events across the arts to capture the interest of all. We are grateful to Andrew Wilson, local conductor and renowned world-wide prize-winning composer, who continues as our President and we are also indebted to all those who have worked tirelessly to plan the Festival. None of this would be possible without the support and encouragement of our generous sponsors - our own Friends of the Tavistock Festival, the Bedford Hotel,
www.tavistockmusic.co.uk
Olijam Communications Ltd (Tavy, Oke and Moor Links magazines), Alistair Kinsey, Miller Town & Country, Plymouth Music Accord, The Wharf Arts Centre and the Mount Kelly Foundation, plus the Malcolm Arnold Society, Tavistock Library, Tavistock Pannier Market and the Tavistock Rotary Club. The Festival is introducing online ticket sales for a number of concerts – a number of different providers are involved so please ensure that you use the correct online details. WEDNESDAY 24TH APRIL Tavistock Library 11.00am TALK BY DAVID LEMON
Abstract Painter, Tony began painting as a figurative artist at the age of 35. However, like many developing artists, he began to experiment with abstraction; he sought a direct link between his emotions and his artistic expression. It was not until sometime later when into his fifties that he found his metier. ‘By indirections find directions out’ as he puts it. Tony Arnold hopes that the expressive dynamism of his work communicates itself directly to his audience at a visceral level, avoiding the multifarious redundancies of figurative art. Open during the Wharf’s normal opening hours.
Writer, journalist, adventurer and ‘Elephant Man’ – ‘The African Elephant.’ Only two species of elephant remain – the Asian and the African. Drawing on his personal experience of life among elephants, David Lemon will take us on an illustrated journey from Moeritherium, the first known ancestor, through the relationship over the millennia with mankind; the complex structure of elephant society and discuss the future of the species, considering how to keep the African elephant alive for future generations. Tickets £3 in advance from the Library (01822 612218), Tavistock Library Facebook page or on the door.
