Being a homeowner comes with challenges, but perhaps the most frustrating is living next door to neighbours who poorly maintain their property. Have no fear, though, as the City of Moose Jaw has released a document called “The Notorious Nine — Nine Ways to be a Notoriously Good Neighbour.” The new publication is a fun, educational look at the
Pets Owners are responsible for keeping their pets safe, leashed and under control when off property. Owners should “scoop the poop,” especially if it is on any property not their own. They must also purchase licences from city hall or the Humane Society. Regular garbage pickup is weekly from June 1 to Oct. 31, with bi-weekly pickup the rest of the year, while recycling pickup is bi-weekly year-round. Residents are allowed no more than six large garbage bags per property per collection day with a total weight of 200 pounds. The cart should be placed with wheels against or close to the curb and not on the sidewalks. If there are snowbanks, put the cart beside or in front, not on top.
residents with tips to ensure everyone lives in a community that’s “#NotoriouslySafe, #Notoriously Clean and #NotoriouslyFriendly.” The nine areas include property maintenance/bouledrainage, and building permits/zoning. The guide contains several photos, including some that are exaggerated with how not to be a good neighbour, the city says. The photos are fun, although if they represent an issue with your neighbour, the municipality encourages a casual, respectful conversation to resolve those issues. The ‘notorious nine’ Presented below is a summary of the document. Property maintenance Keeping areas around your home tidy will improve curb appeal and foster community spirit, the document says. Conversely, unsightly properties look unappealing and pose risks to those around you. Homeowners must follow guidelines from the city document says. Firepits must be constructed of non-combustible material such as concrete, clay, brick or 18-gauge sheet metal and be located a minimum of three metres (10 feet) away sparks, or smoke do not endanger anyone. -
Vehicles are not permitted on side boulevards or municipal property that isn’t a parking lot, must not block
Noise While you think your favourite music might be great, your neighbours probably don’t, the document says. “Alas, for all of AC/DC’s redeeming musical qualities, excessive noise — whether it’s music, shouting, am— can disturb your neighbours and goes against the … Noise Bylaw,” the guide stated. Meanwhile, no loud machinery such as snowblowers or lawnmowers can operate between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. When removing snow, place the snow, ice or other loose debris from the sidewalk or driveway on your property because such material cannot be placed on any city street or lane, the document says. Homeowners should consider helping their neighbours by offering to shovel their sidewalks or driveways. This is helpful to individuals who are elderly or have physical limitations.
must be parked on the right side parallel to the curb, the guide says. Recreation vehicles can only be parked on the street for 48 hours before they must be moved, while trailers or camping vehicles should not be left on the street or in an alley if not connected to a vehicle. A building permit is required to construct a pool with a depth of more than 600 millimetres or 24 inches. Locks must be placed on all gates, doors and entrances when unoccupied. Meanwhile, homeowners must ensure that drainage from their property goes to the front street or back lane and does not negatively affect adjacent properties. They must also keep all swales and catch basins clear of debris or obstructions. Whether you want to build a deck, garage, or fence or improve your property or home, you need a building or development permit. Otherwise, you are not in compliance with the zoning bylaw.

Globalist attacks on Canadian sovereignty a big threat, CPC leadership candidate says Jason G. Antonio - Moose Jaw Express
Maintaining Canada’s sovereignty and its ability to be self-sustaining is the biggest issue facing the country, especially since international treaties could override the nation’s laws, a Conservative Party (CPC) leadership hopeful says. Leslyn Lewis, an Ontario MP running to be the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, was in Regina on July 27, where she at the Sandman Inn to a standing room-only crowd of over 100 enthusiastic people. Yorkton-Melville MP Cathay Wagantall spoke before Lewis, while Regina city councillor Terina Shaw spoke during the Q&A portion. The main topics Lewis discussed included debt, societal divisions, the Liberal-NDP coalition, the trucker convoy, distrust of national institutions such as the government and legacy media, defunding the media, the Charter, public safety and supply concerns, parental rights, cancel culture and wokeism, international law and treaties, globalist organizations, and digital IDs. Questions that attendees asked focused on drinking water on reserves, resource extraction, identity politics, abortion, euthanasia, the right to self-defence, strategies to ensure the CPC wins the next federal election, the country’s international reputation, media attacks, and health care. Sovereignty is “a very, very big issue” that affects many areas, such as health
“I’m not prepared to see Canada go into the post-national state that Justin Trudeau envisions,” Lewis added. “I love my country. I love this sovereign nation
care and food security, she told the Moose Jaw Express afterward. The federal government’s goal of net-zero emissions will negatively affect farmers’ ability to produce food, which is “very, very concerning to our food supply chain.” Since many federal politicians — such as Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland — have allegiances to and sit on the boards of globalist organizations, such
as the World Economic Forum (WEF), boundaries and rules need to be established about their membership with those groups, Lewis continued. “We have to have some concause it’s dangerous for democracy when these shadowy organizations penetrate the ence it.
It was pointed out that former Conservative prime minister Stephen Harper signed Canada onto international treaties that impede Canada’s sovereignty. In response, Lewis said she would use her experience with international law to review those policies and remove the country from them, considering the intentions of globalist organizations are known. Lewis believes she can compete with leadership front-runner Pierre Poilievre. She pointed out that if Conservative Party members look at the substance and promises of candidates and not just slogans, they will see she is a “substantiative candidate” with thoughtful policies that offer solutions to the problems. “So I know the establishment is for Pierre. He has a large number of MPs behind him. He just got a recent high-level endorsement (from Harper) also,” she said. However, Lewis believes the party membership is for her, so she continues to meet everyday grassroots people since they are the ones who vote. If they do their on top.” The Conservative Party of Canada leadership election is Saturday, Sept. 10.
Faith or Science? Leslyn Lewis
Are you a person of faith? Or are you a person of science? Or maybe like me, you feel like those words don’t mean what they used to anymore. “the substance of things hoped for, and the tion which is based on faith and a belief in God, has now been adopted by governments to get people to buy into policies. In some cases when we are confronted with catastrophes, plagues or even a pandemic, we have to put our trust in a solution that may not have been fully tested or explained — that’s faith. Faith has often been confused with science. I am a social scientist, and stay away from making pronouncements in the area of natural science. But it isn’t hard to recognize that natural science has turned to beliefs that are also based on faith. Claims like “trust the science” are actually displays of faith rather than The past two years have been frustrating for those among us who like to ask
questions in order to have a better understanding about what is going on around them. Questions were mocked, ridiculed, demonized and people were out-right silenced for asking simple questions about COVID or even vaccines. In my training as a lawyer whenever I encountered an aggressive, bullying person my instincts told me they were hiding something. Coercion always put me on alert that something wasn’t right. At the beginning of the pandemic, we were all happy to “get vaccinated” in order to protect our neighbours, grandparents, and the vulnerable in society. Any scientist who spoke the truth that the COVID vaccine is a tool to reduce hospital burden by minimizing the symptoms - but it would not completely prevent contracting or formed and ostracized as a dangerous conspiracy theorist. Canadians turned against their family members refusing to see them by falsely believing that vaccinated people were immune from getting COVID. Friends and coworkers yelled at colleagues to “GET VACCINATED”. People threw down one of the major tenets of our medical system – privacy, and started divulging their vac-

And people like me were punished for insisting that we can be safe without violating the foundations of our democracy including the right to medical privacy and free and informed consent. I accepted my punishment by not receiving a critic/shadow cabinet position even though all I had to do was simply disclose my vaccination status. I refused because I believe that my principles were worth more to me than any position. Reflective Moments
By Joyce Walter - Moose Jaw Express
The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author, and do sition of this publication.
If you see my identity, please return to this address
Would the disreputable creeps who stole my identity, please give it back. My identity is not something with my identity, and in the space of no time at all, it has been taken from me, and is doing, who knows what, right now, all under the guise of it being me. Not only is this shameful and illegal behaviour on the part of the guilty, it is disconcerting to think I was such an easy, perhaps even a gullible target. But how did these individuals get interested in me When someone did interesting things with my old credit card back in May, I seriously thought there was just a glitch in the system that the credit card company was tardy in delivering supposed new and improved cards, even without being asked to do so. -
have let down my guard and opened a door somewhere that allowed the creeps to enter without my knowledge. It wasn’t until my laptop was taken over on a recent afternoon that I suspected something nefarious was taking place right there before my eyes. Someone was indeed controlling the computer and I sat there in horror, thinking I might be losing few weeks. Then my cellphone rang and it was Nick or Erik, depending on how quickly he gave me his name. He explained that he would immediately help me get rid of the hackers and unwelcome intruders into my life. This guy knew more about me than I cared to share with any stranger, or even a close friend. When I realized he wasn’t working for the company that supplies the care program for my computer, my friendly demeanour disappeared. In fact it
raged when he wouldn’t stop talking long enough for me to ask questions. And the rage exploded more when I was advised it would cost me in the $2,000 range to supply 14 layers of security to demight interact in my life. But, Nick or maybe it was Erik, assured me this would be a one-time-only charge, and please get my credit card ready. Not surprisingly, he knew all about my previous credit card problem and wanted to know if I would be using a new card. At that point I asked him to hang on, and using another phone I called the fraud department at my credit card company. When the kind man in that department heard my story he advised me to shut off my computer and to hang up the other phone. Then he did some checking and declared I was the victim of identity theft. Nick or Erik called back to talk to me,
only to be told by Housemate that I was talking to the police and couldn’t come to the phone. This guy had the nerve to ask why I would be talking to the police (even though I wasn’t) and was told that I thought he was pulling a scam. He hung up. But he called several more times even though I refused the calls, and he didn’t answer when I called his number. I wonder And so, I have a new set of cards and However, what I want most is to have my stolen identity returned. And even more, I want Nick, Erik or their friends, Rick and Dick to stop calling me and nosing around in my business. Shame on them and everyone like them. Global attack on farmers leads to massive rallies to support the food growers Jason G. Antonio - Moose Jaw Express
Concerned that world governments are attacking farmers’ ability to grow food and feed the planet, more than 100 vehicles slowly rumbled from Moose Jaw to Regina recently to support those producers. A mix of tractors, semi-trucks, halftons and cars gathered near the Peanut Hills Campground on July 23 as part of the nationwide Farmers’ Slow Roll Protest. Supporters from Swift Current and Regina gathered in The Friendly City before heading to The Queen City. About 60 similar events occurred across Canada that day. The event was in response to restrictions that the Dutch government is forcing on its farmers to reduce nitrogen use by 30 per cent by 2030. The Canadian government also plans to impose the same restrictions in this country. Robin Mitchell was one of several hundred people who attended the event and thought it was amazing. She is from a farming family and works on a farm as a second job. She learned that governments — including Canada’s — want farmers to reduce their fertilizer use, which would decrease the amount of food and crops they grow. “All this talk of these cricket farms
and stuff, I like my beef. I order up my beef from my local family farmer,” she said. “I think we’re going down a bad path port (the Dutch and Canadian farmers).” The Moose Jaw group travelled roughly 30 kilometres per hour and arrived in Regina after two hours. “There were people on the side of the road supporting us and honking,” Mitchell said. “This is important. There were very few — only a couple of people — who eating.” The cavalcade ended at the Northgate Mall because access to the Legislative building was blocked. Several people spoke at the rally while a few musicians performed. “I’m very worried about the direction our country is going. I’m going to die standing on my feet and not on my knees,” Mitchell added. “I’ll keep trying to spread the word and keep trying to raise awareness.” In a video posted to his Facebook page, event organizer Mark Friesen explained international policy is being forced on farmers worldwide as part of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development
ernment pays attention since it will face frustrated citizens, Friesen continued. He was also concerned that premiers were silent on this issue and thought they needed to stand up for voters. While the prime minister has accused Canadian farmers of being major polluters, Friesen pointed out that the latter are some of the cleanest and most productive people on Earth. Furthermore, he noted that nitrogen has helped feed the planet and avoid famine. “We need to say no (to reducing it),
A farm tractor leads the way during a slow roll from Moose Jaw to Regina on July 23 to support Dutch farmers. Photo courtesy Robin Mitchell agenda, to which Canada adheres. “If it’s going to decimate the smaller farms throughout Europe, it’s really going to decimate the large farms here in Saskatchewan (and the rest of Canada) … ,” he said. “And it’s our food that’s going to be affected by this, so we have to do something.” Standing with farmers is one act to take, which ensures that the federal gov-
need to stand for our farmers’ livelihoods and our food,” he said. The carbon tax is killing farms, the agriculture industry, and families, while demonizing it is wrong since carbon dioxide is a fundamental building block of life, Friesen said. It makes no sense to penalize citizens with this tax since Canada produces 1.6 per cent of the world’s pollution. A recent study in the medical journal The Lancet showed that more carbon dioxide encourages more vegetation growth, he added. So, he thought bigger issues were at play than just reducing nitrogen.
Small businesses are struggling with skyrocketing costs By Fox Klein - Moose Jaw Express/ MooseJawToday.com
A recent Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) survey says that one in six Saskatchewan small businesses are considering closure; 80 per cent are struggling due to government-imposed costs. The recent proposal put forward by SaskEnergy, to hike the natural gas rates for the small commercial sector by nearly 20 per cent with only three weeks’ notice is yet another blow to small businesses. These small businesses are still attempting to recover from the pandemic, says the CFIB. “The SaskEnergy rate hike is just the latest in a long list of new or increased government-imposed costs being piled on small businesses,” said Brianna Solberg, CFIB senior policy analyst. “SaskPower has also increased electricity rates, Workers Compensation Board premiums are going up, and as of July 1, small businesses are once again paying corporate income tax,” she said. “In fact, over 80 per cent of
Saskatchewan small business owners say that rising government-imposed costs are On August 1, 2022, SaskEnergy will put its proposed hike of natural gas rates into effect. This means that the small commercial energy rates will rise by nearly 20 per cent in 2022. For the typical small business owner that means an extra $51.85 will be on their next bill. SaskEnergy also has plans to increase these rates further in 2023 and 2024, adding a total of nearly $800 to small businesses’ annual energy costs. “Increasing costs for food, fuel, insurance, and commercial rent means small businesses have seen nearly every line item of their budgets go up,” said Solberg. during the pandemic and are now feeling the impacts of rising interest rates. Add supply chain challenges, labour shortages – and the fact that only half of Saskatchewan small businesses are back to normal,
pre-pandemic revenues - it is no wonder that one in six (17%) Saskatchewan small business owners are considering calling it quits,” she added, citing data from a recent CFIB survey. The CFIB is pushing the Saskatchewan government to stop piling new costs on small businesses and instead relieve cost pressure by: Temporarily suspending the provincial fuel tax. Suspending collection of small business corporate income taxes until more small businesses have had a chance to recover. Halting plans to expand the PST in October, as this move will hurt many of the businesses most seriously impacted by pandemic restrictions. Providing cost relief (for example, rebates) for small businesses now facing rate hikes.
Implementing strategies to address labour shortages, which are a major constraint on business productivity and growth. “Cost relief is becoming urgent for Saskatchewan small businesses,” said Kathleen Cook, CFIB’s provincial affairs director. “Instead of piling on new costs that make it harder for small businesses to recover and grow, the Saskatchewan government should be providing cost relief.” The CFIB is Canada’s largest organization of small and medium-sized businesses with 4,300 members in Saskatchewan and a total of 95,000 members in Canada across every industry and region. CFIB is dedicated to raising business owners’ chances of success by providing expert advice and tools, negotiating exclusive savings, and driving policy change at all levels of government. CITY HALL COUNCIL NOTES
City has netted almost $100K in revenue this year from ads, sponsorship contracts Jason G. Antonio - Moose Jaw Express
The next regular council meeting is MONDAY, AUG 8 The City of Moose Jaw has netted almost $100,000 in revenue this year from its advertising and sponsorship agreements, with naming rights agreements at three recreation venues contributing the most cash. Since January, the city has sold $101,020 in advertising and sponsorship contracts. After paying out commission fees of $8,759 to EMJ Marketing, that number slips to $92,261, according to a city council report. In comparison, during the same period last year, those numbers were $71,285, $5,475 and $65,810, respectively. Funding is gained through three main actors: EMJ Marketing, the Moose Jaw Warriors and the City of Moose Jaw. EMJ Marketing pursues sponsorships and advertising for the Yara Centre, Kinsmen Sportsplex Pool, dog parks, Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool, the playground program, and electronic ads at multiple venues. Year-to-date, it has pulled in $14,170, taking $2,834 as commission, leaving the city with revenue of $11,336. In comparison, during the same period last year, those numbers were $17,225, $3,445 and $13,780, respectively. The city has an agreement with the marketing company to assist with sourcing ads and sponsors for city-operated rec venues, parks and programs, the council report explained. City council renewed the agreement last year, while the contract expires in 2024.
EMJ Marketing receives a commission of 20 per cent on all sales. The Warriors pursue advertising and sponsorships for the two municipal arenas. Year-to-date, the team has acquired $11,850, while its commission has been $5,925, leaving the city with revenue of $5,925. City hall has an agreement with the Warriors for ad sales at the Pla-Mor Palace and Kinsmen Arena for rink board, wall and ice resurfacer ads throughout these buildings, based on a 50/50 revenue share, the report continued. The agreement was renewed in 2019 and expires in 2024. The city looks after the naming rights for the Yara Centre, Kinsmen West Park and Kinsmen Regal Heights Park. Year-to-date, the city has netted $75,000 from all three sources. The naming rights agreement for Yara Centre is with Yara Belle Plaine Inc., which pays $50,000 annually on a contract that expires Dec. 31, said the council report. The city manager is concluding negotiations with the company’s representative — in consultation with the parks and recreation department — and expects to bring a new contract to council in the fall.
The naming rights agreement for Kinsmen West Park is with the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Club, which will pay out $100,000 between 2020 and 2029 on a contract that expires in 2045. Meanwhile, the naming rights agreement for Kinsmen Regal Heights Park is also with the Kinsmen Club, which will pay out $100,000 during the next three years. The 25-year agreement expires in 2047. City administration presented an update about the advertising and sponsorship program during the July 25 executive committee meeting. Coun. Jamey Logan inquired about why the rep from EMJ Marketing wasn’t on the committee looking for a new naming rights partner for the Moose Jaw Multiplex — also known as Mosaic Place and the Moose Jaw Events Centre. He wondered if that was an oversight on the city’s part. “I hadn’t thought of this until it came across my desk and I thought, ‘Geez, he’d be a good guy to ask,’” Logan added. The exclusion of the EMJ Marketing rep from that committee is an oversight on city hall’s part, said city manager Jim Puffalt, who noted that the rep has many contacts in the community. Council then approved a recommendation to accept the report.
New private school to focus on kids’ holistic growth besides usual class subjects Jason G. Antonio - Moose Jaw Express
It takes a village to raise a child, the saying goes, and a new educational institution wants to help raise children holistically by encouraging more interaction with nature and older adults. During its July 25 regular meeting, city council unanimously approved a discretionary use application from school and daycare centre at 303 Coteau Street West. The pre-kindergarten to Grade 8 centre can proceed as long as the maximum combined enrolment is 27 students; it complies with the National Building Code; and The school and daycare would be on the main level, turopath, massage therapist, Reiki, herbalist, and others The school will launch this September and follow the Saskatchewan education curriculum but will educate students through hands-on projects, learning in nature, and immersion in project-based learning. Background The property is zoned C1B mixed-used neighbourhood commercial district and meets the zoning bylaw’s review criteria, a council report said. Enrolment above 27 students would require the
school to create extra on-site parking spaces, although the proposed site plan does not accommodate this, the report continued. If additional off-site parking can be found within 230 metres, then an agreement between the municipality and business owners could be signed and registered on the property titles. jacent to the site because it is near a park. City administration could review the situation later to determine if report. Presentation Amy Cojocar, founder and director of The Roots School, told council the goal is to call the building “The Village.” It would help enhance build community, develop relationships and bring together people. It would also offer quality holistic practitioners and mental health services while enriching families’ lives. SaskEnergy purchases more industrial park land to better access existing property Jason G. Antonio - Moose Jaw Express
SaskEnergy purchased land in the agri-food industrial park several years ago to build a natural gas-related structure but needs to purchase more acres so it can better access that property. The Crown corporation bought property in the park southeast of Moose Jaw around 2017 so it could build a town border station, a venue that reduces the pressure of natural gas before it goes to distribution systems for residential consumers. These stations regulate gas pressure from 250 pounds per square inch in gauge (psig) upstream to 60 psig downstream. SaskEnergy returned to city council recently and asked to purchase surface parcel No. 203797637, or SE 27-16-26 W2M Ext. 7, for road access to its existing town border station. This road will also enable the company to build a second transmission line into Moose Jaw to connect with its forthcoming Great Plains Power Station. During its July 11 executive committee meeting, council approved a recommendation for a purchase and sales agreement with SaskEnergy for that parcel of land. The company will pay $3,702.45 per acre or $6,035 in total.
In return, SaskEnergy must grant the municipality a preferred right to obtain easements for a right-of-way on, over, under, and/or through this land for any future city infrastructure or services. Furthermore, SaskEnergy will cover any costs that the city incurs, such as for legal surveys, subdivision costs or transfer registration expenses, while those costs will be added to the purchase project of the property. Council also recommended that the mayor and city clerk sign the option to purchase land agreement between the City of Moose Jaw and SaskEnergy. “The town border station probably happened a little sooner than was planned because of the whole agrifood industrial park requirements for servicing and the SaskPower project,” said Jim Dixon, manager of economic development. “So this is exciting because … it’s a win-win situation that we have this now and sell it to the park, as well as future growth in the City of Moose Jaw.” During the July 27 regular meeting, city council unanimously approved the recommendation as a mo-
vacy and safety. Cojocar created The Roots School in response to changing social and global dynamics and the rise in mental health struggles. She showed council a slide featuring data about the rise in mental illness and suicides among young people between 2009 and 2019. “You may remember this slide I previously shared (during the June 13 meeting) about how Roots School will be widely focused on holistic health and mental health and focusing just as much on developing the whole child as math,” she said. “Both are equally as important.” Since The Roots School will be within The Village, it will allow for more intergenerational learning, she added. Children would be immersed in community with their parents and local experts and interact with different age well-being. The school will start with 20 students and three teachers, with a pupil-to-teacher ratio of 10:1 so students are intimately known and can thrive, Cojocar said. “We want to start small to be successful … ,” she remarked, adding there are similar schools in Regina and Costa Rica whose models Roots is following. Cojocar showed council a site plan for the second has approved the school and the Ministry of Education has given the green light, while they are waiting on approval from public health. The ministry will follow the school closely for the next two years, she added. Once it proves its students are learning and meeting outcomes, the province will provide funding up to 80 per cent.

It is a plan designed to force a change in scenery for some of Moose Jaw’s pigeons but if the birds were able to understand the alternative it would likely have them perched proval. At a recent Council meeting Councillor Heather Eby asked what the City’s plans were regarding pigeon control to which she received an answer the City was in fact But with that said it is not a story about poisoning and eradication but rather one of humanely encouraging the pigeons to move along. “It’s not just about kill, kill, kill. There has got to be other alternatives and other solutions that you can do. That way you don’t raise mass hysteria. You aren’t out killing things and ruining food chains and all kinds of stuff,” Cory Oakes Operations Manager for City of Moose Jaw Parks and Recreation told MJ Independent. Oakes said it is a bit of a mindset change when it comes to dealing with animals considered to be pests by many. A move to create barriers to have animals move to other places where they are not seen as a problem rather than euthanizing them. A move backed up by research. “It has been proven based on the research to the people I have spoken to, you can move them away and they and you won’t even notice them,” he said. their associated droppings - Crescent Park Bridge, Kinsas a nuisance and non-lethal methods to disperse them will be used. “If we get them out of these highly visible areas they will just disappear and drop out of people’s minds,” Oakes said. To accomplish this the City is working on setting up a pigeon control program at the three City facilities with the use of non-lethal methods. “There will be no harm to any of the pigeons. It will just be some deterrents and devices.” The non-lethal methods will include cleaning, physical, visual and audio barriers. At Crescent Park the plan calls for the installation of nylon netting to prevent the pigeons from accessing the under structure of the bridge. Additionally visual deterrents would also be instilled that over time would also help with reduce the pigeon numbers. deterrents as well as physical deterrents to eliminate pigeons’ ability to roost at the facilities entrance. At the City’s bus barns there will be visual and audio deterrents. Cleaning will also occur at all three locations in order to remove the pheromones pigeons deposit that tells and encourages other pigeons it is a place to roost and nest. “The pheromones of the bird is what brings them back for things like nesting every year.” Safety is another major factor in going the non-lethal route because there are children and other animals in two of the areas the City is planning to encourage the pigeons to leave. “We want to make everything environmentally friendly, safe for kids and animals alike. But the big goal
enough they will take all of that wood and they won’t touch the big trees.” Beavers will still nibble on small branches and take
A pair of pigeons nesting under the Crescent Park would be for pigeon deterrent. Not allowing them an area to roost, not allowing them an area to sit and congregate and their pheromones will be removed that helps remove them from the site,” Oakes said. “Then they just don’t come back every year.” the more traditional euthanizing and poisoning of problem pigeons the long term cost savings of a non-lethal approach are better. “The investment out front pays out over time. The vinyl netting lasts 10 to 15 years. These optical gel pucks last 10 to 15 years. The spikes. The audio equipment is going to be placed inside so it is going to be protected so it can last forever,” he said. “Everything up front is going to be a little bit more but it is no different than buying poison or having someone trap them year after year after year.” makes it more likely they will move on. “With this stuff they won’t even be able to sit. If they have nowhere to rest, they can’t mate, they can’t do anything. They have got to go somewhere else. So they just have to spread out and they disappear,” Oakes said. “It is easier for maintenance. It is more aesthetically pleasing. You’re not thinking you are going to get pooped on walking under the bridge and you are not going to see all of that accumulation of bird poop and like that. The when we do it in the bus barns.” The goal is to alter the habits of pigeons so they are not seen as a problem. “Our goal is basically we are going to change their habits. So instead of them coming back to that bridge and leaving all of that poop all over the place they will spread out a little bit more over the park. You will see the odd pigeon here and there but you won’t see ten pigeons sitting in one area anymore.” Non-Lethal Approach Not Just For Pigeons Public perception wise the non-lethal approach has City has made when it comes to beavers from a lethal to a non-lethal approach. “It is like beavers you can go out there and kill but the perception is just horrible a gun out there with a gun shooting beavers. Of course they call them swimming vers you move one family and within weeks a new family moves in,” he said adding the City has moved to a live and let live approach. When the City has to cut down trees instead of grinding it all into mulch portions of the trees are put where the beavers are and they take them for food instead of cutting down trees. “We take the trees and cut them into large sections and place them in their high feeding areas and sure

number of trees beavers cut down. If beavers are a problem the City is no longer hiring someone to shoot them but are now relocating them to other areas where they are no longer a problem. When it comes to beavers the City also works in ways, such as culvert placements and sizes, by designs to help prevent beavers from being able to block them off to create a dam. “We just changed our mindset. We just try to work with the animals and change their habits.” Animal Lover Praises City’s Actions The City’s non-lethal animal control methods has the endorsement of likely the most well known animal rehabber for pigeons in the province - Jan Shadick wildlife rehabilitator and director of Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation in Saskatoon. “Brilliant, that is absolutely brilliant,” Shadick told MJ Independent in a telephone interview. “That is brilliant that a city is being progressive and environmentally sound in the management of the different wildlife in the city I think that is just fantastic,” she said, adding “I am very impressed. Moose Jaw is doing fantastic.” Shadick said she would like to share what Moose Jaw’s approach is with other municipalities. Municipalities that use “lethal solutions” she sees as often cruel and unnecessary. “They need to get the word out to a lot of towns and periencing a problem with a wild animal is unbelievably Shadick is well known for raising concerns about how the City of Saskatoon handles their pigeon problem. She got involved because not only her concern for animals but also because many of the pigeons, and other birds, effected by Avitrol which is a nerve effecting agent Avitrol is a nerve agent that effects not only the intended target birds (pigeons, starlings, blackbirds, spar-

Many attractions make Wakamow Valley a great summer destination Jason G. Antonio - Moose Jaw Express
Whether it’s the farmers’ market, disc golf, camping, hiking or growing vegetables, Wakamow Valley is a busy place that continues to meet the needs of residents and visitors alike. The farmers’ market — now in its second year — has been relatively well-attended since it opened on May 28, although there are slightly fewer vendors than last year, said Todd Johnson, general manager of Wakamow Valley Authority (WVA). Last year 45 vendors plied their wares on Saturdays, but this year that number is hovering around 40. Meanwhile, about few shows this year, but that weekly number now sits around 900. “I think it’s fantastic (that attendance). For a fundraiser for us, it’s really good,” Johnson said, “but being able to support 40-odd entrepreneurs and have them show what they’re doing in the valley and getting people to use the facilities down here (is also important) … .” The farmers’ market is in a great venue — the Oval — that allows vendors to park behind their table and load and unload without much trouble, he continued. Meanwhile, the cost to participate and points for vendors. “Nine hundred people on a Saturday in one spot is pretty tough to beat if you’re trying to be an entrepreneur and sell your product,” added Johnson. Mosaic Food Farm After planting numerous vegetables this spring, the WVA is preparing to harsaic Food Farm and distribute that cornucopia to Hunger in Moose Jaw, Riverside Mission and the food bank.

Wakamow Valley has an 18-hole disc golf course that draws many people to play. File photo “It’s super lush down there … ,” Johnson said. “That’s going really great.” WVA has a great gardening team that has installed soaker hoses to ensure no water is wasted, which is one reason there could be a large yield this year, he continued. Last year the garden produced 8,100 kilograms (18,000 pounds) of produce, but that number could fall slightly this year because of the recent heatwave. The weather was disappointing initially because there was frost in May that killed 300 plants, most of which WVA staff had started growing inside, added Johnson. Staff then bought vegetable plants from greenhouses to make up the shortfall, while the weather has since co-operated. Disc golf Wakamow Valley has an 18-hole disc golf course that attracts people regularly
to the park. However, construction this summer on the Wellesely Park Lift Station eliminated two holes from play. Yet, the valley authority hopes those holes are restored in the fall once the project is completed. A new addition will be signs showing where each hole is, which Johnson thought allow players to download the map to their phones. “I know that disc golf is heavily used. We don’t have counters over there, but we can tell by the people calling us and new people starting. It’s a fantastic sport,” he said, pointing out that besides disc golf, other attractive features of the park include scenic views, the river, the paths, and the animals. Disc golf draws people because par-

We’re a non-profit that has to self-generate revenue. So this is one of the businesses we operate besides hall rentals, which have seen an increase (as well)” because of weddings, reunions, funerals and wakes, Johnson said. Johnson added that if people are stressed, they should come to the park, kick off their shoes, and lay on the grass to decompress.

From one-run losses to comebacks that just fall short, teams playing hot defence and pitchers coming up big against them, just about everything that could go wrong has gone wrong in Western Canadian Baseball League action as of late. The Miller Express opened last week with a pair of tough one-run losses on the road, falling 4-3 to the Swift Current 57’s on July 25 and 8-7 to the Weyburn Beavers July 26 before returning home to drop a 16-8 decision to the Brooks Bombers on July 27 and falling 4-2 to the Bombers one night later. Interesting line-up of August activities at T.rex Discovery Centre in Eastend By Fox Klein - Moose Jaw Express/ MooseJawToday.com
With August now here being the last month of summer holidays for the kids, many families will be looking for fun activities to keep them busy. The T. Rex Discovery Centre (TRDC) in Eastend has some impressive activities in store for the remainder of the summer for those interested. These events are as follows: Great Horned Owl Presentation on August 13, 2022. This event will teach inidividuals how the human-tolerant species is thriving in an altered grassland environment. Celebrate Scotty’s Unearthed Day on August 16, 2022. Guests can celebrate
Scotty’s 31st unearthed day with cupcakes. Check out Storytime with Scotty’s Friends on Saturdays from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. (Great for kids three to eight years old) Theme Week, individuals can join TRDC Interpreters at their theme week table as they show and tell various fossils and discuss prehistoric animals. Located at #1 T-rex Drive in Eastend, the TRDC boasts the largest T. rex, Scotty in the CN Scotty gallery and many other discoveries made by Royal Saskatchewan Museum (RSM) palaeontologists. Another exhibit to highlight is the
brand new Tylosaur exhibit. Tylosaurs are a species of mosasaur. Which is a large, predatory marine reptile that is most closely related to modern monitor lizards and snakes. They lived during the late Cretaceous period, around seventy-two million years ago. They roamed a large inland sea that covered most of Saskatchewan at that time. The specimen is around ten meters in length, it was discovered in the hills around Lake Diefenbaker near Sask Landing Provincial Park. “The T.rex Discovery Centre is an amazing attraction and I encourage Saskatchewan residents to take the opportunity to check out Scotty and the rest of the Discovery Centre’s offerings,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Laura Ross said. “This new Tylosaur display is just another example of the excellent work being done by our staff at the Discovery Centre and
and programs for guests of all ages.” In addition to the new exhibit, TRDC has a popular attraction known as the Paleo Lab Experience. This is an interactive area for visitors to engage with TRDC staff and learn about the research that the Centre is doing. Visitors may aid in unsearch for microfossils. Along with these exhibits and experiences, the TRDC and the Town of Eastend have many fun and interactive activities for the whole family. They are open daily from 10 A.M. to 6 P.M. Admission is done by donation. If you would like to know more about the T. rex Discovery Centre, visit their website at https://royalsaskmuseum.ca/ trex.

Buy a DQ Blizzard in support of Miracle Treat Day August 11th By Fox Klein - Moose Jaw Express/ MooseJawToday.com
Our local Dairy Queen (DQ) in Moose Jaw will be participating in Miracle Treat Day on August 11, 2022, to raise money for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. DQ is encouraging children and families to continue this 20-year tradition of making miracles happen. The proceeds from every Blizzard Treat at participating DQ stores in Moose Jaw and Emerald Park are going towards the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation, which is one of 12 Children’s Miracle Network hospital foundations in Canada. Whatever is raised will stay local, meaning that every dollar donated will go directly to the local Canadian children’s hospital foundation from each community.
Three million in-person and virtual visits were made to children by local children’s hospitals across Canada. DQ employees, franchisees, volunteers, and stakeholders come together to aid in raising funds that allow children’s hospitals to provide the best care possible. This partnership between DQ and the Children’s Miracle Network began 38 years ago in 1984, and since then over $46 million has been raised to date in Canada. To support Canadian children’s hospital, go to our local Dairy Queen on August 11 and get yourself a Blizzard.

On August 14, 2022, an Authentic Mexican Lunch is being offered at St. Andrews Church at 12noon. The meal will include authentic Mexican food with chicken, pork, beef, and/ or vegetarian options at a cost of $25pp to be prepaid by August 7, 2022. This is a social gathering and fundraiser to raise money for the general maintenance of the church but organizers Carol Moran and Cheryl Hetherington thought this would be an innovative idea offering individuals a nice time to unwind and relax with friends in a social setting. Although they usually have these events at Bobby’s Place, they are very excited to have it at St. Andrews Church which can accommodate up to 350 people. The hope is for good attendance but the expectation is to have about 150 individuals come. For more information or to register for the event please call Carol Moran at (306) 690-8001 or call Cheryl Hetherington at (306) 693-0533.
