Saskatchewan school divisions will receive a one-time investment of $20 million to assist with rising fuel and insurance costs for the 2022-23 school year. With this investment, school operating funding will exceed $2 billion for the rst time in provincial history.

For her entire career she has been interest ed in and worked in the areas of disability and rehabilitation.Tenantwent to Austin, Texas, and wrote her Ph.D. thesis on post-stroke neu roplasticity, studying the ability of the brain to recover and heal after damage. Wells Camera & Sound is Moose Jaw’s oldest photo printing business and is now operated by the third generation of the Wells family. The company has stayed rel evant since the end of WWII by embracing innovation.“Mygrandfather started the compa ny originally, post-war,” explained Chad Wells, current operator of Wells Camera. “Kitch Wells was an aviation photogra pher, and he photographed from aircraft during the Second World War. Post-war, he took his skill and opened a photography company.”Thatinitial company was called Ex cello Photo. The storefront was on Main Street in downtown Moose Jaw. In 1973, when the Town ‘n’ Country Mall opened, he, his wife Margo and their son Bob de cided it was time to expand. “And that’s where we brought on the combination of the photo industry and television audio,” Chad said. “We operated at the mall until 2001. September 2001, we bought this location.” Mac Anderson has been an employee of the company since 1978. He remembers the Town ‘n’ Country location having the “There was a big tumbler, huge tum bler, and all the prints were in that dryer just circulating around, all just stuck to it,” Anderson remembers. “And we picked them off, they were all numbered, and the girls would sort them into envelopes. And then Bob, Chad’s dad, and myself would deliver them to Kitch’s network of corner stores. I delivered the South Hill location.” That same eagerness to be at the fore sustained them, Chad said, along with their commitment to their customers. “What’s really kept us going has been trying to stay ahead of the curve. Not nec with Onethat.”photo company that famously lost its top market position through a re luctance to innovate is Kodak. Kodak ruptcy in 2012 after failing to embrace the digital“It’srevolution.interesting, Kodak used to be one of our biggest partners,” Chad remem to use the internet professionally. In 1986, Technet Centre, which was operated out of New York City. So every morning they would run test strips through the photo lab and read them with a densitometer. We sent those numbers to New York, and they would tell us how to adjust our chemistry in order to keep the colours consistent.” At the time, Moose Jaw was one of the work, along with Vancouver and Toronto. One-hour on-site photo development followed, then digital cameras in the mid90s. Now, cell phone cameras are every where, but Chad said cell phones had the paradoxical effect of increasing interest in dedicated cameras and photography rather than keeping customers away. “It had an interesting effect, because it brought out an interest in photography that wasn’t there before. There’s a lot of people now who are really into photography with theirSincephone.”one of the three aspects of the store is photo printing, that’s meant a lot more business. The store can print practi cally any size of photo — on photo paper, or wood, or acrylic, or metal. “It’s really opened the door on what you can do with your photos,” Chad added.

Steph Stephens, another long-time employee, is the photo lab expert. She specializes in restoring old photos and cleaning up photos according to customer requests. Her job has gotten increasingly busy over time. “I can’t keep up,” Stephens laughed. “I mean, I can keep up, but it’s a chal lenge.”One of Stephens’ favourite parts of the job is watching multiple generations of families growing up. Privacy is obviously a concern. Stephens and Wells agree that a serious part of the business is not discuss ing photos, ever, with anyone. “Respect for privacy is one of the rea sons we’re still here,” Chad said. Another big shift in technology this year in particular is that all the new Sam sung TVs are coming with PC-grade pro cessors and Xbox software built in. “All you need to do is buy a controller, subscribe to Microsoft, and you can play hundreds of games on your TV, without a console,” Chad said, shaking his head.

Over the years I have visited the World War Two Section of the Rosedale Ceme tery and collected information about the men who are buried there. The reference notes are from the old Moose Jaw Times Herald and tell of events that resulted in the July 18, 1942 training in Canada. was born in Elisabethville, Congo and has the distinction of being the only man born in the Congo to die while undertaking pi lot training in Canada during WW 2. 10, Grave 247 of the Rosedale Cemetery, Moose Jaw. While browsing through one of my favourite cookbooks, I came across the recipe for the $100 chocolate mayonnaise cake. I had previously made this cake and went so far as to mark it as a favourite in the front of the book — but out of sight, out of mind — until now. The story behind the recipe is as follows: “A lady who was having dinner in an elegant New York hotel was so impressed by this cake that she requested the recipe. The chef gave it to her, along with a bill for $100, which her lawyer advised her to pay. She called it the $100 Cake and gave the recipeMayonnaise, freely.”

With that I returned to my business, being thankful no one else had heard that exchange. But then again, why would any one wonder why he was having a one-sid ed conversation with an inanimate object when such conversations take place more and more: “Google, turn on the lights”, “Alexa, play country music” or “Alexa, call Joe.” Nor can one forget that unseen travel companion that gives directions to nearly lost travellers. But I had never heard anyone in our house talking to the television’s remote control so I was surprised when upon questioning, Housemate excitedly told me we could give orders to the remote con trol and it would change channels for us. This marvel was thanks to upgrades our cable provider had insisted we required so we could continue watching our favourite shows with an enhanced performance. I was given a rapid tutorial on how to command this tiny device to do as I asked, only paying partial attention to the instruc tions. “What if the person living inside the device failed to do as directed and rebelled at the tone of my voice, or at the order as given?”Or was this another method being employed to steal more of our household identity?Housemate assured me the cable pro vider had left us with no choice but to up grade our old large black box to a much smaller, sleeker device, which came with the voice-activation feature, as well as many other challenges/changes not pre be clearer and the subtitles or rolling news would be easier to read. But no one told me, or I didn’t listen, that we would have to memorize dozens, yes, hundreds of new channelAfternumbers.appropriate grumbling about all these changes, we sat there, with nose to the screen, as Housemate called out the numbers and I recorded them as being CBC, TSN, Global, CTV, Spike, Adult Swim (what?), A&E, PBS, NBC, ABC and so on and so on. Then I painstakingly transferred the numbers to a spreadsheet, it looking a lot like a blood pressure chart when I was done. On the old remote, when the channel numbers were punched in, the screen auto matically produced a show. This one does not. There is another step in there to learn and thus, I too, occasionally, have politely asked what’s-her-name to connect me with Channel 251, which is hopefully CBC Na tionalHousemateNews. continues to discover er rors in our spread sheet, and also advised we have several more hundred channels to go through so we have a complete list for the time being with what we already know, and with voice-activated assistance from yet another gizmo we didn’t know we needed.Ihave taken to ignoring the voice in the basement. The voice in the basement drew my atten tion.I listened carefully, and yes indeed, there was an distinct voice but one I rec ognized as belonging to Housemate. Thinking he was trying to get my at tention, but not speaking loudly enough for me to hear up the stairs and through the walls, I went to the landing and called down: “I didn’t hear what you said. Did you want something?” I asked, showing the proper amount of concern and interest. “No,” he replied, “I was talking to the remote to change channels.”

On August 9, 2022, The Moose Jaw River Watershed Stewards, with the support of Gibson Energy, started their third Annual Purple Loosestrife pull in the hopes of elimi nating the invasive species. Purple Loosestrife is an extremely invasive plant from Europe and Asia that has spread quickly across North America and is now present in nearly every Cana dian province. The plant can grow to be anywhere from 60-120 cm tall, although some plants may grow over two May to June. These plants can produce around 2.7 million seeds per growing season, making the likelihood of the invasive species spreading exceedingly high. This invasive species can alter decomposition rates and timings as well as the nutrient cycles and pore water. Not only that but in areas of dense Purple Loosestrife, it can clog irrigation canals, impede boat travel, degrade farmland, and reduce the forage value of pastures. Which could eventually cause a decrease in the recreational use ing, and nature studies. As a result of the abundance of seeds, and its ex tremely diverse soil-changing abilities, Purple Loose strife is extremely competitive and can outcompete im portant native plant species. This poses a direct threat to many at-risk or endangered plant species. Around eleven volunteers congregated at the Moose Jaw River at 8 A.M. to start the pull and were out in the sun until noon with the hope of trying to eradicate the River, which they hoped would make this year the last big pull of this area. Unfortunately, the job was much bigger than anticipated but a huge dent was made in the population. The process of pulling this invasive species is fairly simple, you dig the plant from the ground, mak ing sure to get all the roots and extra plant; the plant is then bagged allowed time to dry and die, and then they “While we are pulling them out, we are going to be trying to get as much plant materials and roots that we can and we will be putting them in garbage bags and let We just do not want it to wash downstream because they can spread through their roots,” said Stephanie Huel, Wa tershed Technician from the Moose Jaw River Watershed Stewards.TheMoose Jaw River Watershed Stewards chose this ed area of Purple Loosestrife they found in our city. It is also very easily accessible with a huge population. For next year’s pull, they are hoping for more volun teers to show up. Hay yields vary considerably across the province this year with some regions struggling to get enough hay for their livestock while others are above average.

Growers in the southwest from Assiniboia to Swift Current have lower than normal hay crops with little rain since April. Many are worried about hay supplies. East central regions have above normal hay crops with less than one ton an acre in the west central region. In the northeast hay yields average two tons an acre Hay yields in the northwest are good but rain and mud has reduced quality and caused delays in haying.

Agrimart: Harvest in Southern Saskatchewan

Further east, several producers located around Re gina and Weyburn, have shared this one of their bet ter-looking crops in recent years, given the amount of moisture these areas received. Some southern parts of the province, near Gravel bourg and Swift Current, seem to have a less optimis tic outlook given the isolated and sporadic rains this summer. There have been reports that some of their crop will again be written off by crop insurance due to a lack of moisture and a large number of grasshoppers. Near Rockglen, Saskatchewan, producers say this year’s grasshopper devastation is among the worst in decades. With harvest now almost underway for most, much of the haying season is over for another year. The lat est crop report indicates that hay yields in the east and north are average or above average, while they are be low average in the southwest and west central regions. “Estimated average dryland hay yields for the province are 1.52 tons per acre for alfalfa, 1.5 tons per acre for alfalfa/bromegrass, 1.20 tons per acre for other tame hay, 1.0 tons per acre for wild hay and 2.2 tons per acre for greenfeed,” according to Sask Ag. With harvest likely to kick into high gear in the com ing weeks, both SGI and farmers urge motorists to be ex tra cautious and vigilant during this time. When driving around farm machinery, the best safety tips include being patient, driving slowly and not following too closely, and giving large equipment plenty of space.

Across the province one per cent of grain harvest was year average of two per cent seven per cent last year. A few lentil crops were started in the southeast while, in the southwest three per cent was complete with lentils, winter cereals and peas taken off.

Combines lined up near Tuxford ready for harvest.

Written objections to the granting of the permit may be filed with SLGA not more than two weeks from the date of publication of this notice. Every person filing a written objection with SLGA shall state their name, address and telephone number in printed form, as well as the grounds for the objection(s).

AGRIMART EXPRESS Producers in Southwest Saskatchewan are preparing for the busiest season of the year, while harvest is already underway for a small percentage of producers. This week, the provincial harvest progress is at one percent, compared to seven percent in 2021 according to the latest Saskatchewan Agriculture Crop Report. The report indicates “just how different the growing condi tions have been in the province between this year and last” given the extent of last year’s drought. As producers across Southern Saskatchewan look forward to harvest this year, many feel more optimistic. In the Moose Jaw area, many producers are expecting good or slightly below average yields this year.

4. I will declare the result of the election at the Rural Municipality Office, located at 13 Main Street, Marquis SK, at the hour of 9:00a.m. on the 15th day of September, 2022.

Estimated yields by crop reporters for the Saskatch ewan Ministry of Agriculture for dryland alfalfa are 1.52 tons an acre with 1.5 tons for alfalfa bromegrass, 1.2 tons for tame grass, one ton for native grass and two tons for greenInfeed, the southeastern region which includes Moose Jaw yields are higher than average with plenty of hay.

Petitions must name a contact person, state grounds and be legible. Each signatory to the petition and the contact person must provide an address and telephone number. Frivolous, vexatious or competition-based objections within the beverage alcohol industry may not be considered and may be rejected by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Licensing Commission, who may refuse to hold a hearing.

The SSGA recently set off a media storm in a news release where they claimed the producer side in the beef “What we are asking for is an investigation into the pricing of beef. It is something that has been going on for quite some time as in a few years,” Garner Deobald pres ident of the SSGA said in a telephone interview while he was busy baling feed. The consumer is paying an all time high for beef right now. With run gone up in (cattle prices) in the last half a dozen years; it has actually gone down in price,” he said. Deobald said the big bucks for beef is not coming back into the pockets of producers and feedlots. “We know there is money in the supply chain. We are really thankful for consumers supporting beef produc ers by buying beef and we recognize they are paying big to trickling down to the rancher to the grassroot farmer.”

Cargill has a processing facility in High River, Al berta and JBS Food Canada in Brooks, Alberta. The two plants were responsible for processing 70 percent of the cattle in 2020. FACILITIES IN CANADA HAVE BECOME COMMONPLACE AS THE RESULT OF TWO MAIN FACTORS: THE FIRST AND MOST OBVIOUS IS THE DRIVE FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY IN THE PURSUIT OF INCREASED PROFITABILITY,” JARED CARLBERG.

But again it is so competitive. It is so dif like to see more coop types or other investment coming into the industry on the packing side of it,” he said. The option of selling beef through the 70 local abat toirs in Saskatchewan is limited due to demand and lack of capacity. The abattoir and local meat cutting industry in Saskatchewan has been shrinking over the years. “Around here they are all booked up for months. Some of them are booked out seven, eight, nine or ten months out. In 1975, when there were calls to consolidate cer tain sections of the industry, a Public Commission found in 1974 a total of 57 packing plants responsible for 88 percent of the federal plant kill. In 2020 three (3) plants were responsible for 85 percent of the beef processed in Canada.

The majority of calves marketed from ranchers and farmers go through the same process. Calves are born on the farm and then raised on grass (in a pasture) as cow calf pairs. In the fall, when between six and eight months of age calves are weaned from the cow. Calves are in most cases taken to a separate pen or holding area where they are usually fed hay and additionally chop (which is a com bination of usually feed barley, oats and minerals) that is run through a grinder to better increase digestion and weightSomegain.time after weaning calves are either sold to feedlots - through an auction or directly - where the ani mal is put in pens where they are fed until they reach mar ket weight at which time they are sold to the slaughter/ processing plant. Some producers - if they have enough available cheap feed - will feed their calves over the winter and sell them, to butcher). Producers often do this because they believe holding onto their calves will earn them larger dollars as they sell into the market later and at a higher weight. Depending on the feed and price situation producers will cull (reduce their herd size) based on anticipated pric es. The bottom of the cattle market usually sees producers culling to reduce costs of feeding less valuable animals. Cattle kept past their slaughter and processing prime still need to be fed and they are not putting on additional meat. They are in fact putting on fat. Fat is less desirable and will not earn the feedlot or producer more money to compensate for the feed and labour costs.

Part Two In a perfect marketplace supply and demand is said to de termine prices. As consumers or industries demand a certain good or service the price of the good increases with demand. Ad ditionally as the price of a good increases the number of that good produced also rises to a point where the supply exceeds demand. At that time where there is an oversupply the price of the good starts to fall and there is a correction from suppliers who reduce their production in correlation with the reduction of demand and price fall. The same generally applies in the slaughter beef cat tle market but because cattle are a living organism the market has a biological element attached to it.

On the food security side the argument is, according to Calberg, all about food security. By processing cattle - all meat animals in fact - in megascale facilities the de creased costs to processors allows for beef to be retailed at a price affordable to consumers. To some extent, governments at all three levelsmunicipal, provincial and federal - also help to encour age megaplants through tax incentives. Governments in search of jobs for residents as well as increasing their tax up shop. The problem for many is the “natural” consolidation in the beef processing industry (and the meat and now the protein processing industry) is the control of a major Consolidation has lead to a few players who process cattle who can, because of their size, control prices and the supply of beef, thus skewing the marketplace - that is according to their critics.

Pricewise cattle is said to be on a 10 to 12 year cycle for farmers and ranchers. It is driven by supply and de mand plus also a biological factor. The biological factor causes the slaughter cattle sup ply and thus the price to wander past demand highs. Producers have surplus animals raised during higher priced times that come to market after a drop in consumer demand and the price they receive is lower than anticipat ed while raising the animal. The price producer’s receive for their cattle rises and falls with not just with demand but the speed at which prices encourage farmers to increase their herd size. This is called the biological lag in the market. The biological lag is the amount of time it takes breed a cow, have a calf and deliver that calf to the slaughter market. The lag can be up to three years. When the supply of slaughter cattle saturates the market producers cut back the size of their herds. When cattle market prices start to fall ranchers and farmers have excess animals due to the biological cycle. They cannot immediately stop production as they have living animals to care for and sell. What the SSGA and other producers are asking in their calls to investigate pricing is the traditional pricing cycle is, in their opinion, out of skew from its traditional cycle. Megasize Processing Plants A major factor in not just the beef processing indus try but the meat - and increasingly the protein industry - is the emergence of a few processing players who, because of their size, are able to offer beef at a cheaper per animal amount as well as a better hygienic product.

Calf To Market

“As you know, this is a once-in-a-generation plant renewal project,” city manager Jim Puffalt said. “We bor rowed $60 million in 2021, and we found out earlier this year that we need an additional $55 million for a variety of reasons, including supply chain changes to the project.”

There is a story behind my surprise. Friends of ours often do a Sunday drive to Weyburn for the colonel’s best served in a buffet. That surprised us but it’s their business and their dol lar. When I questioned him about it he said the Weyburn KFC is like the old recipe that made the colonel famous We were going to put his claim to the test. It was early afternoon when we arrived and ordered at the busy store. The Weyburn store has the only all-day, all-you-caneat KFC buffet in Canada. Six years ago when the head honchos at KFC wanted to close the buffet, the commu nity protested and even rallied the premier behind it until KFCTherelented.buffet looked interesting … tossed salad, jello, pickles, coleslaw, pasta salad, mashed or deep fried pota toes, biscuits and gravy and, of course, chicken. I took a wing and drum stick. My partner glared at the back pieces left but the smiling attendant asked what she wanted.“Drumsticks.”Shegotthem.Weimmediately realized our friends were right. This chicken wasn’t greasy and was cooked just right. We went back for more and were offered drumsticks — no extra cost like in Moose Jaw. The chicken reminded me of my bachelor days when I’d sleep in on a winter Saturday and order a bucket of KFC for my weekend dining. And we noticed the second a customer left a table, someone was there with a mop and cloth to clean up. No We were quite happy with the decision to try the KFC at theWeyburn.greenpasture hills were turning brown — a sign of summer’s end. On the way back we saw the passenger train on the Valley, hoping to see wildlife. All we saw were lots of gophers and two hawks. South of the Gomersall Ranch three vehicles blitzed by us – a car, motorbike and another car from Alberta — all close together. Just ahead of us the lead car served suddenly to avoid hitting a deer crossing the road. The other two hit the brakes sharply. It was a near accident. The deer hopped into the steep ditch and parked it self butt end facing us, head angled just enough to see if we were giving chase. We stopped and played peek-a-boo with it for about home. The funds will not be needed until 2024, but Puffalt said that recent uncertainty regarding interest rates made it prudent to try and lock in a rate of less than six percent while it is still possible. “We want to get it in front of council and start talking of 5.8 per cent. … From the City of Moose Jaw’s point of view, we may have opportunity to fund internally with re serves. As you know, our long-term investment fund (has a target) interest rate growth of six per cent.” If the city can lock in a lower interest rate now, it will is due.The upgrades to the plant will increase its produc tion from 205 million litres per day to 250 million litres per day — an essential renovation given that the cities of Regina and Moose Jaw, which co-own the plant, are both expected to grow in the next few years. Other major improvements will also be made. The project’s details are available at

The Buffalo Pound Water Treatment Plant renewal proj ect will cost an additional $55 million, of which the City of Moose Jaw’s portion will be $14.3 million. Council au thorized city administration to begin looking for favour able interest rates before the money is required.

Moose Jaw pickleball courts hold grand opening to rave reviews of six-court facility at Kinsmen Sportsplex Randy Palmer - Moose Jaw Express

Dignitaries and members of the Pickleball Moose Jaw gather for a group photo after the ribbon cutting.

Moose Jaw city councillor Jamey Lo gan hits a return as Mayor Clive Tolley keeps an eye on their opponents during a special exhibition match after the grand opening.

cial grand opening on Sunday afternoon, it’s been a whirlwind of activity for the brand new City of Moose Jaw pickleball courts at the Kinsmen Sportsplex. And with the explosive growth the sport has seen not only in Moose Jaw but across Canada, you can be certain that the quick turnaround makes sense. Well over 100 current and future play ers and supporters took part in the grand opening on Sunday afternoon, featuring a host of community dignitaries alongside national and provincial representatives welcoming the new six-court facility. “It’s so great to have an outdoor fa cility, we’ve had our indoor gym facilities but we’ve never had an outdoor home and this is going to be fantastic for the local community, people of all ages,” said Scott Osmachenko, recreation services manager with the City of Moose Jaw. “Then there are the tournaments that will be happen ing, too, I’m sure these courts will see a lot of use. There’s learn-to-play pickleball and then there’s competitive pickleball so it’s going to be available for everyone of every age and ability.” That’s one of the biggest draws for the sport, which sees around 350,000 players across Canada as of 2020 and the player base almost tripling every two years since the sport took off nationally in the 2010s. A hybrid of tennis and badminton with its own unique ruleset, pickleball is exceptionally low impact and can be played by those young and old and of all “You don’t have to be a jock to play pickleball, that’s what’s unique about pickleball, anyone can play it,” said Karen Rust, president of Pickleball Canada who just happened to grow up in Moose Jaw. “We segment people into the level they’re comfortable with and you play with peo ple at the same level and you have fun.” Folks can play for exercise and fresh air, or they can go full-speed competitive can be found all over the province in the summer, and close to 1,000 players took part in the national championships in On tarioAndrecently.the aforementioned growth has seen more and more courts popping up all the time.“Pretty much every municipality is getting involved now,” Rust said. “For awhile we were dealing with ‘it’s just a fad’ but now they’ve accepted that it’s not. It’s everywhere, you have celebrities building courts in their backyard and it’s getting on to mainstream TV, there were two hours of pickleball on CBS [Saturday]. So there’s all kinds of room for growth.” As one might expect, the local pickle ball community is over the moon with their new facility, with Pickleball Moose Jaw members on hand to welcome newcomers nament on the local courts. “It’s pretty exciting, it was just over a year since we started talking with the city about feasibility and location, so it’s pret ty cool to have one year from concept to our club is that we haven’t had a facility where everyone can gather and play. Now that we do, we can promote the game and gather people together, and we’re looking forward to it.” With the courts opening in mid-sum mer, nothing too serious is planned for the rest of this year. But discussions are already underway to deal with an expected large increase in the number of local pick leball players in the near future. “We have lots of ideas for next year, now we’re looking forward to people sign ing up and joining our club and coming out to enjoy the game,” Richards said. Theoretical Neuroscience: Potential Mental Health and Addiction Care |

There are advocates of mental health requesting that more should be done against stigmatization while encouraging those in need of help to come forward. There is progress in mental health and addiction care in Saskatchewan, but gaps, like in the rest of Canada and North America, widen with the complexities of the brain.Inthe United States, former direc tor of the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Thomas Insel, wrote a book “Healing: Our Path from Mental Illness to Mental Health”, where he expressed an interaction, during the Q&A session with a large group of family members: ‘You re ally don’t get it, my 23-year-old son has schizophrenia. He has been hospitalized and now he is homeless. Our house is on try of the paint. What are you doing to put He said he had been describing, “stem cell studies of neurons in schizophrenia, ants for autism, and models on the epi genetics of stress and depression”, when he realized the limits of those advances to expedientThoughtherapy.mental illnesses are multifar ious, what, in the basic sense is mind, or What are the components of both structured, could lay tracks in the brain, to understand what they do or how they interact.Mind or mental can be proposed to be comprised of thought and memory. Thought is the transport, memory is the location. It is where thoughts go across the memory that determines what to re member, understand, feel-like and so on, at leastThoughttheoretically.andmemory are also the ex periential basis for drug addiction, such that when some use, thoughts [seem to] travel elsewhere from destinations of be ing down, feeling-like heaviness, worried, anxious, irritable and so on. Though there are cellular and molec ular mechanisms of drug dependence, but the poles, theoretically, are thought and memory. The memory picks up actual feel ings, before it brings what it means to feel-like something, resulting in wanting In brain science, it is said that neu rons power thoughts, but thoughts are not neurons and thoughts are not rendered by neuroimaging.Seekingout how thoughts emerge and transport across the brain could become a potential toolkit in every mental condition and addiction intervention, to show the individual and loved ones where thoughts are, and what that might mean. In neuroscience, it is established that all sensory inputs go to the thalamus, ex cept smell, which goes to the olfactory bulb. Those landing areas are where sen before relay to other parts of the cerebral cortex for interpretation. This means that senses land some where, gets processed and proceeds for interpretation.Itistheorized that sensory process ing or sensory integration in the thalamus and olfactory bulb is into a uniform unit or a uniform quantity, which is thought or a form of thought. It is this quanti or representation or version of senses that go on to be Interpretationinterpreted.is postulated to be knowing, feeling and reaction. Knowing is memory. The memory stores thought or sory processing. Stores are in the smallest possible unit of unique information on anything, but similarities between stores are grouped.Thismeans that since several kinds of cars, doors, chairs, shoes, words, scents, birthdays and so on are known, each one is stored in the smallest possible unique form, and whatever is common between stores is Duringgrouped.activities and interactions, stores relay from group to group in the memory. After thought leaves a store in memory locations, it heads for the desti nation for actual feelings, followed by re dicular. To feel anything, thoughts have to get somewhere. This makes thought the activator at Thoughtsdestinations.cancome from sensory processing or from memory, but they go around for affect. All these theoretical descriptions can be used to simulate what thought might be doing, or memory in any case of mental health and substance abuse. There are con versations on biopsychosocial approach to mental care, but thoughts and memory are alwaysThoughtpresent.transport can be displayed in a theoretical architecture as an addition mental conditions within Saskatchewan and beyond. Sympathy When you have a friend who is sick in the hospital do you have sympathy? Do you have empathy? Is there a differ ence? What about terms like pity and compassion? What does it all mean? What is sympathy? Sympathy comes from the Greek word pathos, meaning feelings or emotions. Sym in Greek means “with.” So, at its root, sympathy refers to sharing sim ilar feelings or emotions with another person. However, in English sympathy tends to include actions of sharing along with the feelings. In the sentence, “She went to her friend for sympathy,” the woman is desiring some ac tion to take place between them. In this case, sympathy is more than empathy, which is the understanding of how they feel without doing anything.

(Matthew 18:27) Pity implies sorrow for one is misery. Pity can lead to action, but it is not implied. Compassion is the desire to help but also does not imply action. Compassion is related to pity as both words are translations of the Greek verb splanchnizomai, mean ing an attitude of the inner parts. “When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

Columnist John Kreutzwieser loves to research words and writes this weekly Word Wisdom column for Moose Jaw Express/MooseJawToday.com. He has an interest in the us age, origin, and relevance of words for society today. Greek and Latin form the basis of many words, with ancient Hebrew shedding light on word usage.

This connection between actions and sympathy has its roots in the Biblical letter of 1st Peter. “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind.” (1 Peter 3:8) The Greek word sympathais implies participation in the lives of people. It means sharing the same experiences, even sufferings, with others. To say, “My deepest sympathies go out to the fam ilies of the victims,” without actually doing anything is a misuse of the word. This feeling is better described as pity, in the sense that pity is having tender sorrow for one in pain. If you send a letter or card to a person or family that has suffered a loss or grief that would be an action along with your emotional response, which is sympathy The Gospel of Matthew records, “Therefore the king dom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to set tle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.”

(Matthew 9:36) Compassion refers to the understanding of another’s pain and the desire to do something to help but does not have to entail actions. The interesting thing about pity is that there can be occasions when pity is mixed with hatred or dislike for the one in pain. The aspect of help or love can be absent from the emotion of pity. One could say, “I pity anyone who has to work in that place.” Or in a phrase like, “He didn’t live to see his daughter grow up, that’s a pity.” We sometimes pity people who are the cause of their own problems and we are not inclined to help. At times we use sympathy to indicate an emotional or intellectual connection. We might have sympathy with someone’s lot in life, but without any intention of doing anything. That is not a proper use of the word sympathy but is more correctly called pity. Our community and world would be a much better place if we truly had sympathy for one another. Then we would do more than feel or think or talk but do something to help and make a difference. You can be a blessing to someone by being sympathetic.

Unfortunately, Dairy Queen’s Miracle Treat Day in Moose Jaw wasn’t exactly the kind of day you would like to get out to enjoy an ice-cream blizzard under the hot Saskatchewan sun. The weather was rather cool, over cast and rainy, but nevertheless, the support came out for a great cause – our provincial Jim Pattison’s Children’s Hospital.OnAugust 11th, and for the last 20th years, donations have been raised on Miracle Treat Day for 170 children’s hospitals; for every Blizzard purchased, participating lo cations have donated net proceeds to their local children’s hospital. Both Moose Jaw Dairy Queens participated and were kept remarkably busy with fourteen pre-orders, a tomers coming to get their tasty treat. “The support from the community has been great. Our drive-thru has only had a quick 5-minute break be fore another line-up, and they are buying like 5 or 6 Bliz zards at a time,” says Ann Angeles, the Manager of the 1711 Main St. North Dairy Queen. This year’s most popular Blizzards were the Cara mel Drumstick and the Coffee Crisp. Of course, Oreo and Cookie Dough were top sellers, as well, but a Blizzard that surprised the staff with how popular it was this year was the Strawberry Cheesecake. Something new that manager Angeles tried this year was calling out to local businesses to let them know about Miracle Treat Day. This allowed her to get the word out ers. “Dairy Queen on Main and the one on Caribou are very thankful for the local businesses that have graciously supported us every year that we have been doing Miracle Treat Day,” she said. Last year Saskatchewan Dairy Queens raised a total of $155,455.88. The total for all Canadian Dairy Queens is close to $2 million. Dairy Queen has aided the Children’s Miracle Net work in Canada since 1984. Together they have contrib uted over $46 million to local children’s hospital founda tions in Canada. The students who were suppose to be part of the horse show were able to come up on Sunday afternoon and met with members of the RCMP Musical Ride and were given a tour of the horses by the Mounties to make up for the light horse show’s cancellation. Despite the cancellation of the Exhibition horse show the main equestrian event of the Fair went well. “The (RCMP) Musical Ride went well. It was well attended. The only thing we were unable to get was for them to partake in the parade this year unfortunately. They had to go to the (RCMP) depot and so they were unable to get back in time,” she said. As part of their tour, the RCMP Musical Ride like to help out local charities and in Moose Jaw it was no different. The Musical Ride had honoured guests from the Health Foundation, Prairie South School Division and the Holy Trinity Catholic School Division.

A change in the use of the Moose Jaw Exhibition Convention Centre was also a positive for the Fair. “We tried something a little bit different this year in the (Moose Jaw Exhibition) Convention Centre here. We put up four bouncy castles or activity centres for kids and that seemed to go over really well. It gave the kids a chance to come in here, as well as their parents could sit and rest and have a breather,” she said. “That was really attended well especially the one Wilson thanked the volunteers who helped out with the bouncy castles but if the event is held again there is a need to hire people to help out. “The 4 H cattle show and sale, we didn’t hear any thing from them. We didn’t hear of anything that didn’t go well, nobody came and say that it didn’t,” Wilson re ported. There was one event that had to be cancelled though, due to an infection horses catch circulating in the area. The light horse show had to be cancelled “to protect the tenant’s horses here,” as well as the RCMP’s Musical Ride’s horses because of the potential of strangles present in horses coming to the show. Strangles is a contagious upper respiratory disease in horses. Strangles is treatable with anti-bacterial drugs but is can cause swelling so severe that can lead to deaththus the name strangles.

While Wilson spoke to the daughter of the former RCMP member, she learnt the man had cancer and want ed to see the Musical Ride. “Anyway he use to be in the RCMP and then went into the city police in Calgary. He just recently found out he had Stage Four cancer and he was quite wanting to come and see them (RCMP Musical Ride) and we end ed up inviting him, his daughter and his family to be our guest at one of the afternoon shows. They were so pleased and honoured that we brought him down here. He even wore his red serge. Afterwards she texted me and sent me pictures. They were very pleased we brought him in to be an honoured guest,” Wilson said. In her report to the Moose Jaw Exhibition Board, Wilson said the 2022 edition of the Fair went well. “Since we haven’t had a (Moose Jaw Hometown) Fair for a couple of years we felt that the Fair turned out really well. It was well-attended and everything went along really well,” she said. The centerpiece for the Fair is the Midway and this year’s four days worked well. “On the Midway we had more rides this year. They provided about 28 rides and they actually came and set up a little bit earlier and I think that kind of helped sell a few more tickets on our end,” she said, adding “they were pleased at the end of the four days with how everything went when we met with the Midway.”

Fair this year had a closely monitored budget be cause it was unknown what the public response would be coming out of the COVID - 19 restrictions, she said. “We just watched it a little bit. But overall we were fairly pleased with the entertainment. Everything seemed to go fairly well. We were quite pleased with everything.” moose jaw Ready to Sell Your Home and Move On?
