Since 2016, Saskatchewan has seen a steady increase in overdose totals. In 2019, there were 179 deaths, but with the pandemic, the numbers increased from 322 deaths in 2020 and 388 in 2021. Now the province is on pace to set another record in overdose deaths in 2022.
“The SHA primary care team in Moose Jaw has estab lished contact with daycare leaders and there is ongoing planning for a meeting to discuss community concerns. This face-to-face dialogue will continue as community engagement on this initiative is extremely important to the SHA,” the SHA wrote in response in an email.

The machines are being installed in Saskatchewan communities as a means to distribute harm reduction supplies - clean needles, sterile water and the opioid overdose medication naloxone (marketed under the trade name Narcan) - as a means to prevent overdose deaths and prevent the spread of AIDS and Hepatitis C through the sharing and re-use of intravenous needles.
Additionally there was already “notable drug issues in the vicinity of the (Southwest) day care.”
“The two sites recommended through community and partner consultations are Crescent View (South Hill) and the Palliser Library,” the SHA wrote, adding “as men tioned previously, public consultation with such a proj ect is paramount to its success, so that will continue. The SHA will continue to engage community members to an swer any questions or concerns brought forward.”

For their part, the SHA responded they wanted to continue to address community concerns about the loca tion of the vending machine/needle exchange.
Not everyone who attended the meeting held at the Palliser Regional Library was in favour of the proposed location. The Southwest Day Care and Early Learning Centre was one of the attendees at the community meeting who do not favour the proposed Palliser Regional Library site.
So far, the SHA has decided upon a Downtown loca tion at the Crescent View Clinic site where harm reduction supplies are presently being handed out. Additionally, the SHA is looking at a South Hill location. A location that remains elusive after three proposed sites have already beenTherejected.move is not without controversy with a proposed South Hill location in the 4th Avenue SE business district (between Home Street W and Coteau Street W) drawing opposition from residents and at least one long time busi ness.“I don’t want this machine near my home; it will just bring more meth heads. We need the police,” a South Hill resident said under the condition of anonymity. The long time resident’s anonymity was requested because they have a well-found fear of retribution from drug users and dealers who reside in the same neighbourhood.
“Proposed locations for harm reduction services take into account client data, proximity to other harm reduc tion services (counselling, free supplies, etc.), as well as consultation with providers and partners like the RCMP,

Vending machines are part of the puzzle to combat addiction and diseases that spread due to addiction issues.
The same principle is being used in the decision to locate two harm reduction supply vending machines in Moose Jaw. The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) wants the vending machines in areas more accessible to intravenous drug users so they are made use of.
In a letter sent out to parents, the Day Care wrote staff and board members have “many concerns” about the proposed location.
Presently, Saskatchewan has the highest transmis sion rates of HIV in Canada with 237 diagnoses in 2021 up from the 184 cases diagnosed in 2020. Hepatitis C rates nationally were 30.4 per 100,000 people whereas Saskatchewan had an infection rate of 52.5 per 100,000 people.Vending machines have been set up in communities such as Lloydminster, North Battleford and Meadow Lake - two at hospitals and one at a community clinic to service clients after hours.
“The SHA is currently exploring new ways to de liver harm reduction services. “Vending machines” that can only be accessed by authorized clients are one way to provide 24/7 access to safe supplies that reduce the spread of bloodborne illness and infection among people living with addictions issues,” the SHA additionally wrote.
The SHA engaged with the South Hill Planning Com mittee on the proposed Palliser Library (South Hill) loca tion. Consultation with community associations, partners and the public is important to the success of this project so those consultations will be ongoing for the foreseeable future. The two sites recommended through community and partner consultations are Crescent View and the Palliser Library (South Hill),” the SHA wrote to explain the loca tion of the Presently, machines.apharmacy located in the surrounding neighbourhood distributes methadone to addicts. “I think it does take vision on the part of our educa tional leaders in Canada, and the people who are funding education to say that healthy relationship education is mandatory, and it will follow these guidelines and it will address these issues. That can have a huge impact.”

Some fruits and vegetables do not have a long shelf life and to ensure having these products available to you throughout the winter, it is important to process these fruits and vegetables in order to store them for any length of time. As with any storage, produce should be careful ly picked to ensure that the products are free of nicks, bruises and other damage, so that you are putting away the best quality of food. If there is damage to the fruit and vegetables, then those should be consumed at the dinner
I have fond mem ories of my Mom blanching and freez ing huge amounts of vegetables in order to feed the family over the winter months. She would tally up the total number of bags and weights of what she processed which helped to plan for next years’ garden and ensured the family had quality food
The next most common way of preserving raw veg etables or fruit is to use a pickling process to ensure a long shelf life. Often the produce is again subjected to a heating process, then cooled and placed into jars with a pickling solution (which contains some type of vin egar/acetic acid) which required level thus limit ing the amount of oxygen in the jar. The container is sealed to ensure no con tamination occurs and the products have a lengthy shelf
period that is dependent on the product. A rapid cooling then occurs, and the product is most often bagged and frozen. Life of the product essentially is ended due to the high heat and thus the produce no longer respires, which does not happen when using a variety of storage options that do not involve processing.

Of course, there are still positions to play for and youngsters who would love nothing more than to unseat one of those veterans. That led to a camp that was excep tionally competitive, leading into a theme the team has carried throughout O’Leary’s tenure.

As for himself, using the Buffalo camp to launch into his most productive WHL campaign yet will be the ulti mate

“I think I’ve always thought of myself as a lead er, I’ve worn a letter before, but at the end of the day it doesn’t change anything,” Calvert said. “If you’re a lead er, they give you a letter for a reason and the boys look at you for what you do and how you go about your day, nothing like that changes.

“I was really excited when I heard,” said Calvert, who received the news back in July. “I was a little disap pointed I didn’t get an invite to a development camp over the summer, but then I got the call that I was going to play in their rookie tournament and I’m pretty happy about it. I’m excited for the opportunity, I’m really prepared for this and I’m really looking forward to it.”
“We talk about compete all the time and that’s the separator between wins and losses and what separates a good player from a great player,” he said. “The skill level turning guys has been exceptional and that’s a testament to (general manager) Jason (Ripplinger) and his scouting staff, bringing in good players and skilled players that coaches like to work with.”
That goal -- and many of the markers throughout the contest at the Moose Jaw Events Centre -- was a micro cosm of camp in general. Up-and-coming rookies like Howell working alongside rugged veterans like Calvert with a single objective in mind: prepare for one of the most promising seasons in recent history for the local WHL
“We want to win this year,” Calvert said mat ter-of-factly. “We have a lot of older guys this year, and we’re a pretty tight group. Our team has been together for a couple years now, since the bubble there are still a lot of guys around. We’re an older group now and we’re looking to be one of the top teams in our division again.”

“That’s what we’ve been talking about, we’re not young and developing anymore and it starts now, the time is now,” O’Leary said. “That’s been the mindset all sum mer long, the players know it and we look at the group that we have, a lot of them have been here since the league

The news was a highlight of what Calvert felt was a very successful off-season, which included plenty of time out in Caronport at PHA’s outstanding training facilities working to hone his game.

Putting together a winning campaign and ideally a deep playoff run with naturally be one of the main goals this season, and Wanner feels the team has the horses to do it.“Last year, nobody really knew what to expect from us and the year before we were rebuilding still, but this is a year where it’s fun and you’re going to be on a winning hockey team,” he said. “Everyone has high hopes for this season, everyone in Moose Jaw wants us to do well and I think we should do that, give everyone something to rally around.”Wanner is coming off a campaign where he put up six goals and 23 points in 55 games and will be looking to increase those numbers this time around.

“That gives the young guys an opportunity to show their stuff,” Ripplinger said. “This is their opportunity to show they belong and there’s no guarantee that when players go to NHL camps that they’ll be back. You look at someone like Mateychuk, he’s signed, and you never know what happens at the next level. If he ended up stay ing, it hurts the organization but it also helps our organi zation in that we’re doing our part to develop players.”
Mateychuk turned it up another gear, with their slick puck movement on the power play setting up Ben Riche with the tying goal with 16 seconds to play.

players and they’ve come in and played really well. So as good as our young guys were last year and came in and pushed, these young kids are doing the same this year and once those older guys leave [for NHL camps] hopefully the depth won’t take too much of a hit.”
“(Jagger) Firkus, Yager, Mateychuk and (Max) Wan ner -- who I think is one of the most underrated defence men in our league -- all our guys like that came in and have looked great, and that’s exactly what we expected,” Ripplinger said. “They’re the skilled players we’ll be looking to lead our team to a highly successful season.”
Every training camp, the questions are the same for gen eral managers across the Western Hockey League. Which veterans have taken a jump compared to the previous season? Which newcomers look like they could be when it comes to trimming down the roster?
The 19-year-old Estevan product and current Moose Jaw resident was among a host of elite players who took the ice in Caronport at Prairie Hockey Academy through out the summer, putting in a ton of training and ice time in order to prepare for the upcoming campaign.
Of course, Wanner has something other than the War riors on his mind. A seventh-round selection by the Ed monton Oilers in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, he was also preparing for his second NHL training camp while aiming to turn some heads this time around.
The experience at main camp against the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl last fall was an eye-opener for Wanner, and left him clamouring for more at the highest level of the game.
The work began not long after the Warriors’ season ended. After a few weeks off to recover from the rigors of a week in the gym and on the ice.

As for the overage situation, the Warriors appear to have things well under control -- goaltender Connor Un gar has one of the slots locked down, with the Warriors hoping to see Jordan back as well. Korczak and Hunt, as signed overagers, can play in the AHL and will likely end up there if they don’t crack the big squad. That will likely leave a slot open, and a decision to be made down the road.On a whole, the Warriors are without question aiming for a solid run this year, but Ripplnger isn’t going alleggs-one-basket just yet.

Warriors’ Wanner looking to take next step as veteran defenceman with WHL squad
Odds are Wanner will be back in Moose Jaw once the NHL situation has been settled, and he’ll be a major cog in one of the most promising Warrior teams in recent history.“It’s kind of crazy, obviously,” Wanner said. “I re member being a 15-year-old kid just out of PHA looking up to Jett Woo and [Josh] Brook and all those guys and now I am one of those guys. It’s very exciting, but at the end of the day you have to go out and perform and do your best to be a leader.”
Warriors defenceman Max Wanner is looking forward to a solid season after a summer of hard work prepar ing for the 2022-23 campaign.
In the old days, taking a month or so off and just cruising into Western Hockey League training camp would be a normal occasion for the vast majority of players. Camp was for getting into shape for the season, right? So why bother with the extra work?
“It’s a full-time gig, there’s a bit of time off but when you get to training it has to be 100 per cent,” Wanner said. “Then just coming back, you feel bigger and stronger and that naturally comes with age, but I feel like I’ve im proved and I’m looking forward to a good season.”
“I made an impression last year, now I’m huntin’,” Wanner said with a grin. “I’m trying to go out there and make a name for myself, so I’m just hoping to have a good camp, see where it takes me into the season and hopefully have a good year.”
Ripplinger impressed with performance of team throughout week of practices and scrimmages
One of the main goals for veterans is to make that leap from one year to the next -- a 15-goal scorer becom ing a 30-goal scorer, a 30-goal scorer cracking the 50goal plateau. Ripplinger felt a handful of players could be capable of that jump if what they showed in camp trans lates into the season.
Warriors defenceman Denton Mateychuk gets a shot off in front of fellow veteran defenceman Max Wanner during the Black White Game.
“A lot of the signed players who came in have looked good and there are a lot of guys I could mention, but over all we’ve been happy with all the rookies,” Ripplinger said. “Some of the young guys have come in here and pushed hard. Lakovic and Howell are two highly touted

For Moose Jaw Warriors general manager Jason Rip plinger, the overall news was as good as can be -- the cadre of experienced returning players looked every bit like a crew chomping at the bit for a successful season, the rookies did all they could to unseat their older coun terparts and the decisions were going to be tough, as ex pected.“Overall, I think everyone came into camp in shape and there’s a lot of depth here, the young guys have been pushing the older guys so it’s been a competitive camp and that’s exactly what we were hoping for,” Ripplinger said during the Black White Game to close out 2022 train ing camp.“It’simportant, and it’s hats off to our organization how we push these guys and the way our culture is for these players when they come in. So if I can keep working on that it’ll be
All that effort has paid dividends, as Wanner was one of several veterans who caught general manager Jason Ripplinger’s eye as showing wholesale improve ment. That was all part of Wanner’s off-season goals as he looked to take his game to the next level.
The Warriors will have no less than seven players they expect to be in their line-up this season heading off to NHL training camp, nine if you include overage signed players Ryder Korczak (New York Rangers) and Daemon HuntWanner(Minnesota).(Edmonton), Cole Jordan (Calgary), Martin Rysavy (Columbus), Firkus (Seattle) and Mateychuk (Co lumbus) are all NHL drafted players, while Atley Calvert (Buffalo) and Eric Alarie (Los Angeles) will be heading into camps as invitees.

That all comes with a rather large ca veat -- there’s always the chance Jordan has played his last regular season game in a Warriors uniform. As an overage player, the Flames could sign Jordan out of camp and immediately assign him to the Amer ican Hockey League or ECHL, ending his junior career with one stroke of a pen.

“It was sure hell. We lost a lot of good men and I think a guy was lucky to get back. Next time we go we hope to stay. No one wants any more evacuations.
We know about Barney because he wrote a letter to the Hammond Building.

No stress until the morning of Wednesday, August 19, 1942 when he stepped off a Landing Craft and onto the stony beach at Dieppe and, what seemed like the en tire German Army, was shooting at him and trying to kill him.To make matters more stressful, after a few hours of shooting and being shot at, Barney and his S.S.R. buddies were told to go back to the beach, get on a Landing Craft (ALC) and go back to England. Again, the German Army tried to kill him.

Major Richard Loney was a Veteran of the South African War and became involved in the lives of many Moose Jaw and District recruits. The Major wrote to many enlisted men and women while they were overseas. He lived at 790 Stadacona Street West, Moose Jaw and died in 1965 at age 87 Barney’s letter of October 13, 1942 was reproduced in the Moose Jaw Times Herald.
“I feel lost, so many of the boys gone. Scores in the hospitals yet, but we left a lot in France. I was well inland when I got hit and it was tough enough getting down to the shore again.
“Anyhow, we made it safe at last and landed, all soaking wet. All I had left was one boot, a pair of pants badly torn from barbed wire, and a P.T. shirt.

Next time you feel stressed remember Barney McBride. Barney grew up on the East-side of Moose Jaw. I think he was the son of Mrs. Samuel McBride, 1213, 3rd Avenue N.E. He would have attended Ross School.

“It wasn’t too bad till the evacuation started. Then, when the A.L.C. (small Landing Craft) came in and we had evacuated the buildings etc., Jerry took them over and swept the beach. It was like hail. Some of the boats were sunk with men left swimming all around. Other boats got overcrowded, and men were hit in the water and in boats. One man was killed right beside me; others just ured, ‘your turn next, why worry.’
