Wishing you a wonderful Christmas, from your crummy neighbors…

The Christmas Tree: A Happy Tale for Christmastime One Christmas Eve, the trees in a wood were very unhappy. They wished very much to keep Christmas, but they did not know how to do so. “We look so brown,” complained one. “And so bare,” added another. “If we only had our pretty green summer dresses,” contributed a third, “then we should be decorated and could keep Christmas.” “Hush, children, hush,” whispered North Wind in quite a gentle voice for such a rough fellow. “Make haste and go to sleep.” “Hush, children, hush,” softly murmured a sleepy little bird. He was roosting on one of the branches of the unhappy trees. So the trees dropped off to sleep, one by one, while a little star twinkled peacefully overhead. While they slept something happened. When the trees awoke, they found that someone, perhaps North Wind, had, during the night, cast over each of them a lovely soft cloak of spotless feathery white. ‘How beautiful we are,’ said the trees. ‘Now we can keep our Christmas.’

Helpless love

JAW

MOOSE

Once upon a Christmastime, all feelings and emotions went to a coastal island for a vacation. According to their nature, each was having a good time. Suddenly, a warning of an impending storm was announced and everyone was advised to evacuate the island. The announcement caused sudden panic. All rushed to their boats. Even damaged boats were quickly repaired and commissioned for duty. Yet, Love did not wish to flee quickly. There was so much to do. But as the clouds darkened, Love realised it was time to leave. Alas, there were no boats to spare. Love looked around with hope. Just then, Prosperity passed by in a luxurious boat. Love shouted, “Prosperity, could you please take me in your boat?” “No,” replied Prosperity, “my boat is full of precious possessions, gold and silver. There is no place for you.” A little later Vanity came by in a beautiful boat. Again Love shouted, “Could you help me, Vanity? I am stranded and need a lift. Please take me with you.” Vanity responded haughtily, “No, I cannot take you with me. My boat will get soiled with your muddy feet.” Sorrow passed by after some time. Again, Love asked for help. But it was to no avail. “No, I cannot take you with me. I am so sad. I want to be by myself.”

Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.

Author Unknown

When Happiness passed by a few minutes later, Love again called for help. But Happiness was so happy that it did not look around, hardly concerned about anyone. Love was growing restless and dejected. Just then somebody called out, “Come Love, I will take you with me.” Love did not know who was being so magnanimous, but jumped on to the boat, greatly relieved that she would reach a safe place. On getting off the boat, Love met Knowledge. Puzzled, Love inquired, “Knowledge, do you know who so generously gave me a lift just when no one else wished to help?” Knowledge smiled, “Oh, that was Time.” “And why would Time stop to pick me and take me to safety?” Love wondered. Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and replied, “Because only Time knows your true greatness and what you are capable of. Only Love can bring peace and great happiness in this world.” “The important message is that when we are prosperous, we overlook love. When we feel important, we forget love. Even in happiness and sorrow we forget love. Only with time do we realize the importance of love. Why wait that long? Why not make love a part of your life today?”

healthy diet. That is how they can move so quickly. It is also how they stay slim and trim. They make sure that the reindeer are fed and well rested. They provide water for them and keep their stalls clean. They take them out for an occasional fly, which gives them the opportunity to see the world from a different point of view. It also keeps the animals in shape. They also have to maintain Santa’s sleigh, lest something go wrong on the big day. Regular oil changes, a state of the

art GPS system, fuel injection and a means of communication have to be in perfect running order. Their work is not done until after about a week after Christmas. In those few days, they take care of any returns and exchanges, in the rare occasion where Santa in his busy-ness makes a mistake. When the elves finally get their holiday, they head to Scandinavia, where they had their origins. After a bit of rest and relaxation, they head back to start again for the next year.

Coping with loneliness at Christmas

Feeling low this Christmas season? You’re not alone. Amid cheery songs, festive parties, gifts, and good wishes, many lonely people are crying or dying on the inside. Maybe you’re one of them. No fun. Romantic estrangement, family strife, and bereavement can make your holidays dismal. One of Elvis Presley’s most popular songs was “Blue Christmas.” A lonely crooner mourns heartbreaking lost love. Performers from The Beach Boys to Celine Dion, Loretta Lynn, and Jon Bon Jovi have recorded it. Does even thinking about that song make you depressed? Several factors can produce Christmas blues: Hectic activity can bring physical and emotional stress; Overspending can produce financial pressure; Year-end reflection and focus on loss can magnify sorrow. Overeating and overdrinking combined with a de-

creased amount of sleep is also a formula for extreme emotional swings. Is your family apart this season by necessity or choice? Maybe an “empty chair” reminds you of your pain. Does the Christmas “Ho, Ho, Ho” contrast with your deep anguish? One widow recalled how she felt during the Christmas after her husband’s death: “Little mattered to me. I didn’t want to hear carols. I didn’t want to be cheered up. I didn’t want to look at perky Christmas cards. I wanted the same thing I’d wanted every day for eight months: the strength to force myself out of bed in the morning, to brush my teeth and to eat.” How can you cope with Christmas loneliness? Here are some suggestions: • Spend time with people, especially positive ones who lift your spirits. Perhaps you’ll be grateful for their cheer.

Christmas, my child, is love in action. Christmas is love, with all the trimmings

The Christmas Truce by David G. Stratman From his book We Can Change the World

British and German soldiers meeting in No Man’s Land during the Christmas Truce of 1914. Picture on website http://history1900s.about.com/od/1910s/a/christmastruce.htm courtesy of the National Army Museum.

It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War I, German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and fraternized with “the enemy along twothirds of the Western Front (a crime punishable by death in times of war). German troops held Christmas trees up out of the trenches with signs, “Merry Christmas. “You no shoot, we no shoot. Thousands of troops streamed across a no-man’s land strewn with rotting corpses. They sang Christmas carols, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared rations, played football, even roasted some pigs. Soldiers embraced men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if the top brass forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high. A shudder ran through the high command on either side. Here was disaster in the making: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals on both sides declared this spontaneous peacemaking to be treasonous and subject to court martial. By March 1915 the fraternization movement had been eradicated and the killing machine put back in full operation. By the time of the armistice in 1918, fifteen million would be slaughtered. Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It gives us a glimpse of the world as we wish it could be and says, “This really happened once. It reminds us of those thoughts we keep hidden away, out of range of the TV and newspaper stories that tell us how trivial and mean human life is. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really could be different.

‘Twas the month before Christmas. The weather was good. Carey looked at his roof-top and got in the mood. “I’ll hang Christmas lights,â€? he said, “while it’s right; No more freezing ďŹ ngers some cold winter’s night.â€? So he dragged out the lights – every crate, sack and packet And hauling the boxes he made quite A RACKET. Then he poured him a drink – just enough to feel merry And, to get in the spirit, he added a cherry. That’ didn’t taste bad. He’d enjoy Christmas this year. And, just for insurance, he poured him a beer. From the garage to the house, he balanced a ladder, Had another sip. What the heck! It won’t matter.

He draped strings of lights on each step-ladder rung And clung with one hand. Then he started to sung. “Merry Chrith-mus,â€? he yelled, and his voice rang out clear. “Have a jolly good one! It’s the season of cheer!â€? Up the ladder he went, though rather unsteady, Higher and higher – and he felt rather ‘heady’. He got to the top and looked all around, Had another sip as he surmised the ground. “Thith ith gonna be gor-juth. Thuch boot-i-ful thights!â€? Then he tangled his feet in a long string of lights. He stood on one foot, kicked the cord, had a swig, And spun off the roof as he danced a ďŹ ne jig. With his foot in a cast and his pride up his sleeve He may not have lights on his house Christmas Eve, But, one thing is sure – and we’ll all drink to that – He’ll have Christmas spirits tucked under his hat! ‌Gladys MacDonald

Love was born on Christmas morn. Page C22 – Moose Jaw express.CoM – December 20 - 26, 2012

A Different Christmas Poem The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest.

(this poem has been circulating with no related author but the sentiments bring great awareness and thanks to our Canadian Military personnel who stand on guard for our rights and freedoms)

Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So slumbered I, perhaps I started to dream. The sound wasn’t loud, and it wasn’t too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn’t quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight. A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old, Perhaps a Trooper, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child. “What are you doing?” I asked without fear, “Come in this moment, it’s freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!”

For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts. To the window that danced with a warm fire’s light Then he sighed and he said “Its really all right, I’m out here by choice. I’m here every night.” “It’s my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separates you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore me, I’m proud to stand here like my fathers before me. My Gramps died in Europe on a day in December,” Then he sighed, “That’s a Christmas ‘Gram always remembers.” I’ve not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures, he’s sure got her smile. Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red and the white ... A Canadian flag. I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house and my home. I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother. Who stand at the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall.” “So go back inside,” he said, “harbour no fright, Your family is waiting and I’ll be all right.” “But isn’t there something I can do, at the least, “Give you money,” I asked, “or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that you’ve done, For being away from your wife and your son.” Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, “Just tell us you love us, and never forget.

Five life lessons from ‘A Christmas Carol ’ By Bob Welch

1. Learning begins with listening. Initially, Scrooge wants nothing to do with the spirits. But once he realizes they have his best interest at heart, he willingly lets them lead. “Spirit,” he tells the Ghost of Christmas Present, “conduct me where you will.” Whenwelisten, welearn.Whenwelearn, we have the potential to grow and change in ways that will not only help us, but those around us. Says Proverbs 18:13: “To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.”

When Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, he likely had no idea it would be a Christmas staple nearly two centuries later. Some might see the book as only a tale about a bitter miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited on Christmas Eve by four spirits who force him to examine his selfish ways. But it’s really a story of reflection, renewal and a revitalized life. Here are five lessons from the holiday classic:

2. Bitterness will poison you. Scrooge’s nephew, Fred, is a wise man. It is Fred who points out that “the consequences of (Scrooge’s) taking a dislike to us, and not merry with us, is, I think, that he loses some pleasant moments … he loses pleasant companions.” In other words, it rebuffing Fred’s invitation to join in the Christmas merriment, it’s Scrooge who loses. It’s been said that bitterness is like swallowing poison and expecting that the other person will die. Wrong. The victim

of bitterness is ourselves. 3. There’s joy in starting over. Scrooge gets a bad rap. Too much attention is paid to his mean-spiritedness and not enough to the all-new Ebenezer. We see the sullen, bitter, biting Scrooge, but not the laughing, giving, joyful Scrooge. On Christmas morning, however, he reminds us that starting over washes us in newness. “I’m quite a baby,” he says. “Never mind, I don’t care. I’d rather be a baby.” People get in ruts and forget that they needn’t stay there. Scrooge’s turnaround reminds me there’s hope for us all, if we’re willing to begin anew. 4. We must be present to win. On Christmas morn, one of the first things Scrooge does after realizing he’s been given a second chance at life is to fling open his window. He moves from self to the world at large. He notices life around him instead of only himself. To notice is to see. To see is to feel. To feel is to build connections with those around us. And to build connections is

to bring love to the world. 5. We need to live with the end in mind. “Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on that stone,” says Scrooge when the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows him the headstone with Ebenezer’s name on it. The catalyst for Scrooge finally realizing he’s wasted his life on money and power is seeing that there’s an end to that life — and it’s a rather depressing end. To live with the end in mind is to be inspired to change now. As someone once said, the best time to plant a tree was fifty years ago but the second best time is now. It’s a lesson that Ebenezer Scrooge teaches us well every Christmas. The story of Christmas makes it clear: Welcome the refugee

The newborn child was a refugee. His parents had traveled a great distance from one jurisdiction to another in obedience to a political mandate they did not fully understand. Exhausted from a long day’s journey, they sought lodging but were turned away, so they took shelter in a stable. Amid farm animals, the labor pains began and the woman gave birth.

We have prettified the scene over the centuries. We have suspended fluttering angels from the rafters and cued the animals to gaze at the tableau adoringly. But the reality, I suspect, was different. The animals seemed more menacing than worshipful. The cold air of a desert night swept through the stable, inducing shivers. The stench of manure was overwhelming. And the conditions for giving birth were hardly hygienic. We have no record of what the young parents had for supper that night, but I suspect they would have been lucky to salvage a crust of bread. This is the nativity that millions of Christians around the world celebrate this time of year. The scene I have just described provides the pretext for extended celebrations and an orgy of gift-giving. We don’t need another screed against the crass commercialization of an ostensibly religious holiday; that battle was lost long ago. We have hollowed out the meaning of Christmas so completely that for many, even most, the newborn child is an afterthought, not so much rejected as ignored. But if we look carefully, how is it possible to miss the parallels between the young family in the stable and the new wave of refugees searching for a safe place to live, to rear their children? They lack food and clothing, and they have been turned away from one potential shelter after another. They want nothing more than a reprieve from the political machinations that threaten their survival. They even come from the same part of the world, the Levant.

The Bible tells us, repeatedly and unambiguously, to welcome immigrants. Exodus 23: “Do not oppress a foreigner.” Leviticus 19: “The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself.” Further along in Leviticus, we find guidance for feeding strangers: “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you.” Still later, Leviticus commands us to treat aliens equally: “You are to have the same law for the foreigner and the native-born.” Jesus, the boy in the stable, beckoned his followers to care for “the least of these,” a description that certainly applies to immigrants and refugees. Jesus later described those who would be admitted into the kingdom of heaven as those who demonstrated acts of kindness toward those in need: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” By Randall Balmer, LosAngelesTimes, December 18, 2015

It was the winter of 1955 . . . . . . and very cold with an abundance of snow but there was warmth in our humble rustic dwelling on the old farm homestead. We were still basking in the glow of our honeymoon-state as I was a fairly new bride; a Finn maiden from Nipigon, Ontario, who had worked as a cook in a lumber camp North of Thunder Bay where I met the love of my life, a Ukrainian prairie boy who came down east with his two brothers to find their pots of gold. As fate would have it, we were shortly, thereafter married and decided to head back to the prairies to help on the farm. The old folks, my new in-laws, lived on the homestead near Richard, Saskatchewan in an authentic sod house with the younger siblings. My husband Mike was one of the middle children in the large family of 11 kids. Many of the older brothers and sisters had already left the nest.

We moved into the tall two-storey house on the same farmyard but it was a stark reality; very different than what I was accustomed to. In fact, there mustn’t have been much to the bones of the building because it swayed during the forceful howling winds of winter and the sway was much more intense upstairs. In fact, it was sometimes scary. The nearest town was seven miles away and because of the exorbitant amount of snow, there wasn’t much for roads to speak of. It was only a few days to Christmas and we needed some necessary household supplies so Mike decided to head to town on horseback to pick them up and the mail. It was quite the feat as in some places the snow was up to the horse’s belly. Thankfully, horse and rider made it home, a little frost-bitten but no worse for the wear-and-tear. It was finally Christmas Eve and although finances were pretty tight, Mike surprised me with a Christmas present that we both could share; a decorated ‘Special-for-Christmas’ box with two packages of Black Cat cigarettes and a lighter in the middle. Of course, this wouldn’t be socially acceptable today but remember that in those days, smoking was the thing to do. It was our only gift but we could share it. We enjoyed the smokes and each other’s company that first Christmas together. This was my mother Irma’s remembrance of her first Christmas in Saskatchewan with her husband - my father Mike. They have long since given up the smokes for better living. God is continuing to bless them after sixty-three years together.

Visit your local library and let your child choose books and materials to bring home to read. If you are on the road visiting family and friends, encourage children to read street signs. If your family receives greeting cards, have your children read them aloud, or help them create their own personal greeting cards and write messages to family and friends. Ask your children to help make

a grocery list or read labels in stores. Encourage your children to read recipes and help with the measuring and baking. For parents, the true magic of the holidays is creating family traditions and memories that last a life time and even impact future generations. Reading and storytelling traditions offer an easy and powerful way to strengthen the fabric that binds families together and increase the chances of future happiness and success. Christmas Fables A Perfect Gift

A successful toy company tycoon wanted to send the perfect gift to his beloved estranged nephew. He hadn’t seen the boy in years since the boy’s family moved up north but the old man always remembered him fondly. He was determined to make his nephew the coolest toy a boy could wish for. The old toymaker brought together his top scientists, engineering and design teams. After much thought, he decided to create the world’s most beautiful performance tennis racket. These rackets were the season’s hottest selling and most highly sought-after toys. The model’s award-winning design was guaranteed to drastically improve a player’s speed, grace, and power in the game. The old man happily wrapped up his masterpiece and sent it off. On Christmas day, he received a call from his nephew thanking him for the gift. It was, as the boy gushed, better than anything he could have dreamed of. The old toymaker smiled, pleased. It made him happy that his creation gave his nephew so much joy. The two promised to keep in touch and made plans for a reunion soon. After hanging up the phone, the boy strapped on the new “snowshoes” he received and ran out to show it off to the other school children. They ooh’d and ahh’d in admiration as the boy ran across the snow. How light his feet, how graceful his steps, how powerful his stride! Everyone agreed. It was the perfect gift. The Gingerbread Castle

Georgy was your regular, run-of-the-bakery gingerbread man. He worked hard, had a modest home, and enjoyed faithful friends. Every year, he’d invite everyone over for a holiday get together. They were always very cramped in the little old cottage although his friends never complained. Georgy wished he could be like his neighbor Greg, who had a spacious gingerbread mansion and always threw the best holiday parties. Georgy made a promise to himself that he was going to work his way to having a house just like that. From that day on, Georgy worked tirelessly day and night, absorbed in his job. He made great progress and came up with cool products that received wide acclaim in the gingerbread community. Because Georgy was so busy, he rarely saw his friends and family. The stack of declined invitations piled on his desk along with the company contracts and paperwork. Five years later, Georgy had earned enough money to buy not a gingerbread mansion-- but a giant gingerbread castle! Georgy arranged for the most extravagant holiday gala the neighborhood had ever seen and ordered his castle’s impressive graham walls were decked out in the finest of tinsel icing and gem gumdrops. Musicians were hired, a feast was laid out -- everything was in place for the grand event. That night, no one came. Every gingerbread man and woman was busy hosting holiday parties with close friends and family in their own warm gingerbread homes. Georgy walked through his castle’s empty halls, remembering the days everyone used to all gather in that cramped old cottage, talking until dawn. He realized that he really missed that. Space was nothing without the people who fill it. MORAL: Know what you’re working toward. *www.pen.fm/read/Christmas-Fables-for-the-New-Entrepreneur-PNe281263c6fd21d2b

She jumped in with her own suggestion: “Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!” “Let us heed our daughter-in-law’s advice,” said the husband to his wife. “Go out and invite Love to be our guest.” The woman went out and asked the 3 old men, “Which one of you is Love? Please come in and be our guest.” Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other 2 also got up and followed him. Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: “I only invited Love, Why are you coming in?” The old men replied together: “If you had invited Wealth or Success, the other two of us would’ve stayed out, but since you invited Love, wherever He goes, we go with him. Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!”

‘Twas the Month After Christmas

‘Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse. The cookies I’d nibbled, the eggnog I’d taste All the holiday parties had gone to my waist. When I got on the scales there arose such a number! When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber). I’d remember the marvelous meals I’d prepared; The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared, The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese And the way I’d never said, “No thank you, please.”

As I dressed myself in my husband’s old shirt And prepared once again to do battle with dirt– I said to myself, as I only can “You can’t spend a winter disguised as a man!”

So, away with the last of the sour cream dip, Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip Every last bit of food that I like must be banished ‘Till all the additional ounces have vanished. I won’t have a cookie, not even a lick. I’ll want only to chew on a long celery stick.

I won’t have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie, I’ll munch on a carrot and quietly cry. I’m hungry, I’m lonesome, and life is a bore— But isn’t that what January is for? Unable to giggle, no longer a riot. Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet! -Anonymous
