Protect yourself from shingles
Shingles are a painful skin rash caused by the same virus as chickenpox. If you have ever had chickenpox, you can develop shingles. Seniors in particular can be susceptible to shingles; approximately one in three Canadians will develop shingles at some point in their life, and the number of cases is rising. Risk increases as you get older, but you can develop shingles at any age. The virus, known as shingles or herpes zoster, reactivates when your immune system is not operating at peak efficiency. This could be due to older age, illness, medications that suppress the body’s immune system, HIV infection or certain types of cancer, or cancer treatments. You can pass the virus onto someone who has not yet been infected. However, this person would then develop chickenpox and not shingles. Shingles occurs as a reactivation of the latent virus, not from “catching it” from someone who has shingles. Symptoms include rash, upset stomach, headache, fever, and chills. These symp-
toms may be preceded by warning signs like sensitivity, itchiness, numbness, or pain. Typically, only one section or one side of the body is often affected. Common sites for the rash include the chest, abdomen, back, buttocks, neck, and sometimes the face and scalp. The rash itself is reddish, with many tiny, fluid-filled blisters. The rash will spread over a few days, although the extent will vary from person to person. The rash commonly occurs on one side of your body as a band of blisters that go from the middle of your back around one side of your chest to your breastbone. The blisters will break, dry out, and then crust over. From before the time the rash erupts until after it’s healed, you will feel itchy. The rash may prove to be extremely painful. The blisters and rash usually last about seven to 10 days and completely disappear after one month. While you will likely have only one bout of herpes zoster, some people may get it several times. Antiviral medications work best if started
within 72 hours of developing the shingles rash. This will minimize the extent and spread of the rash and the associated pain. Blisters will also crust over and heal faster. These antiviral medications may also help to reduce the risk of developing chronic pain from shingles. To relieve the itching and pain of shingles, you can try applying calamine lotion to the blisters, soaking in a tub with cornstarch or oatmeal, or using a cool, moist compresses. You want to keep the rash dry and clean and avoid dressings and bandages with adhesives. Keep your immune system healthy to avoid reactivating the virus. This includes eating a balanced diet, regular exercise, and ensuring you get adequate rest. There are two shingles vaccines available: Zostavax and Shingrix. You may be able to get these shots at your local pharmacist. Regardless, talk to your doctor or a pharmacist about shingles and the vaccination, particularly if you over the age of 50.

5. Tunnels of Moose Jaw The Tunnels of Moose Jaw is a popular tourist destination throughout the year, but residents should visit as well. If you haven’t been on a Tunnel tour in many years, you may want to go again. These guided theatrical tours feature local actors and animatronics, creating a unique and memorable experience. There are two tours: the Chicago Connection and Passage to Fortune. The former has guests take on the role of bootleggers working for Al Capone in the 1920s. It is a fun tour that kids will find thrilling. Please note there are some stairs on this tour and there are some loud noises that might be too frightening for young children. The Passage to Fortune is about Chinese immigrants living in Canada. This tour might be more suitable for older kids. Visit www.tunnelsofmoosejaw.com or call 306-693-5261 for more information about the tours. 6. YaraCentre Burn off some steam and get some exercise on the walking track. This is perfect when it’s too cold or slippery to go walking outside. YaraCentre also offers drop-in opportunities where families can enjoy whatever sport they want on the facility’s turf. Some equipment like balls are provided, or you can always bring your own. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the fitness classes for seniors 55+. 7. Visiting city parks Moose Jaw has a number of parks that are perfect for getting out and enjoying some fresh air. During the winter months, 10 of these parks feature free public skating rinks. At Elgin Park there is even a crokicurl rink! During the summer months you can find spray parks at Elgin Park or the Saskatchewan Centennial Spray Park (1600 Coteau St. West). One is also being constructed at East End Park, located on the corner of Ominica St. and Ninth Avenue N.E. This park will officially open in 2019. The city’s parks also include playground equipment that will sure to be a hit with kids. Don’t forget to bring a frisbee or a ball and play catch. It’s a great way to spend the day! Of course, you can’t talk about parks without mentioning Crescent Park, located in the heart of the city’s downtown. Be sure to visit the playground, the splash park, and feed the ducks. The kids will have a blast! 8. Swimming at the Kinsmen or the Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool Swimming is a great way to get exercise and have fun. Throughout the year you can visit the Kinsmen Sportsplex, located at 855 MacDonald St. This facility is handicap accessible and includes the main pool, diving boards, water slide, whirlpool, steam room, and concessions. Public swim times are offered from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. on weekdays. Family swim times are offered free of charge on Fridays 6 to 7:15 p.m. Check the city’s recreation guide or call 306-694-4483 for more information. During the months of June, July, and August you can also swim at the Phyllis Dewar Outdoor Pool. This Olympic-sized swimming pool is a popular destination on hot summer days. Older kids will love jumping off the diving tower. Bring a towel and your favourite pool toys! 9. Spending the day in Wakamow Wakamow has great trails that are perfect for walking or biking
throughout the year. In fact, there are over 20 km of trails throughout the park! Did you know that you can hand-feed some of the park’s birds? Chickadees and red-breasted nuthatches, in particular, are quite comfortable with hand feeding. Bring along some pine nuts and they will land and eat right out of your hand! The best time of year to do this is during the fall and winter months. In the winter, you might also enjoy cross-country skiing or skating on the Oval at Kiwanis River Park. Bring along your skates and skis and explore! Of course, in the spring and summer months the kids will love playing on one of Wakamow’s popular playgrounds. If you are feeling adventurous, you can even rent a canoe or kayak and go paddling on the river. Want to sleep under the stars? Rent a spot at the campground! And, whatever you decided to do, don’t forget to stop by the Burger Cabin and pick up a tasty meal or cool off with some delicious ice cream. Alternatively, bring along your own food and have a picnic! 10. Visiting Buffalo Pound Provincial Park Whether you want to go camping, swimming, boating, fishing, or you just want to explore the park’s trails, there is lots to do at Buffalo Pound! Stop by Squirrely Putt and Play and enjoy a game of mini golf or the rock-climbing wall. From here you can also rent paddle boats, kayaks, or bicycles. Finish the day off by taking a walk along the Nicolle Flats Interpretive Area, where you will find lots of waterfowl.

An Integrated Strategy for Saskatchewan’s Aging Population
In 2016, 27 per cent of the population in Saskatchewan was age 55 or over. That number is expected to increase to 34 per cent by 2038. Some people worry that the increasing percentage of older persons will put greater stress on community resources. However, older persons continue to be a positive resource. They contribute a tremendous amount of volunteer time to our communities. They bring a wealth of experience and wisdom. They are living longer, more active lives, with a greater awareness of the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Whether you see the increasing population of older persons from the perspective of increasing needs or increasing benefits, the real issue for our province and our communities is to plan for this population shift. Over the last few years, older persons have expressed concerns related to the accessibility of timely health services; the ability to remain in their home as long
as possible with ready access to all necessary services; the affordability of care homes and the availability of long term care beds; transportation issues; the sufficiency, sustainability and security of their finances and the effects of social isolation on their health and others. The situation is complicated by additional variables of rural vs. urban, wealthy vs. poor and living alone or with family or friends. For the most part, governments, community leaders, community organizations and individuals have an understanding of what the problems are when addressing the needs of an aging population. There are many ideas about what is needed. What seems to be most lacking is a plan for how to get there – a Seniors’ Strategy. This is the motivation for the Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism (SSM’s) involvement. In the absence of leadership and planning, SSM decided to take on the challenge of working to address these issues. The goal is “To develop a research-
based strategic direction, including an effective formal structure, to address the needs and concerns of older persons in Saskatchewan.” During 2018, SSM held forums and focus groups in various communities across Saskatchewan to listen to the needs and gather ideas from older persons. As part of the research, we gathered together the main themes identified through the consultation process. We need your support to help develop a strong voice for older persons in Saskatchewan. Please take a few minutes and complete our survey at https://uregina. eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ekEcOPOYIrjyPSB. Your participation will help develop priorities so that we can focus our efforts with the development of the findings from this work. A Seniors Strategy is imperative to ensure that “All Voices Count! Older Adults Need to be Heard!” Randy Dove, SSM President

Beltone helps customers hear better
Beau Getson, hearing aid practitioner, and receptionist Rachel Riendeau are ready to greet clients at Beltone. Are your loved ones complaining that you have the TV turned up too loud? Do you often find you are missing out on conversations? You may have a hearing problem. Fortunately, Beltone is the ideal place for all your hearing needs. Beltone provides hearing tests. This includes a pure tone test to determine if there is any hearing loss. This is followed by more complicated tests that deal with speech and word recognition. If necessary, customers then receive assistance selecting a hearing aid, which is adjusted so it fits properly. Follow-up visits will ensure that everything is working and fitting as it should. Hearing aid practitioner Beau Getson recommends you get your hearing checked annually, depending on your age or occupation. May is
Speech and Hearing Awareness Month, so be proactive get your hearing tested. “We want to tell people that it is not just seniors who should get their hearing checked. It is a regular thing that you should get done, at least to get a baseline for it. You should get it checked every year or two,” said Getson. “The population of people who have hearing loss is getting younger and younger. People are a lot more tolerant of noise than they should be; anything above 80 decibels can damage your hearing. Eighty decibels is not very loud. Most conversations, for examples, are probably around 70 decibels. When you listen to your music it is probably closer to 100 decibels.” Getson says it is best to get your hearing checked sooner, rather than later. “Hearing loss is such a gradual process that it is usually someone else who notices it first. Your own voice tends to increase so that you can hear yourself better and you will slowly start to turn up the radio or the television. People just kind of adapt to it over a number of years,” said Getson. “That is why it is good to get checked more often because the more severe the hearing loss, the harder it is to get used to hearing again with amplification or a hearing aid. If you catch it when there is just mild or moderate loss then it is easier to adapt to things again.” Getson says that wearing protective equipment is
the best way to protect your ears. Did you know that Beltone can make custom earplugs that are created from an impression of your ear? Don’t like the standard ear buds that came with your iPod? Belton can create custom earbuds, too. As a third generation hearing aid practitioner, Getson loves his job. “I really like helping people. We can improve someone’s quality of life.” The technology in hearing aids has definitely improved over the years. You can now get devices that are virtually undetectable. Some even come equipped with Bluetooth technology. Beltone has been helping customers for over 75 years and Getson says the company is very innovative. “Hearing aids can hook up to your cell phone now, so you can answer your phone through the device. There is an app so you can adjust the volume, the bass, and the treble. It has GPS so if you forget it at the coffee shop it will show you its location, as long as the battery is still good. It is pretty amazing how the technology has changed, even over the last five years.” Beltone is located at 81 Athabasca St. W. They are open Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Visit www.beltone.ca or call 306-693-4123 for more information.
Put your hearing to the test with a FREE Beltone 360° Hearing Evaluation™ The Beltone 360° Hearing Evaluation™, conducted by one of our Certified Hearing Aid Specialists, will determine if hearing aids are right for you. The Royal Canadian Legion is a great place for socializing to come and talk about their experiences, but the club has changed over the years — it is no longer known as a men’s club. Popular activities at today’s Legion include Friday night suppers, meat draws, a shuffleboard league, dart leagues, curling, and golf. Of course, the Legion is not just about socializing; it is also about helping out local veterans through initiatives such as the Poppy Fund. The money from the Poppy Fund goes to help local veterans and their families here in Moose Jaw.
If you are looking for a great place to meet new people and socialize, the Royal Canadian Legion is for you. The local branch, no. 59, dates back to 1925 and has been a popular place to socialize ever since. Originally, it was a place for veterans
The Legion also supports youth via camps, scholarships, bursaries, cultural exchanges, and through programs like the Cadets. In addition to these charitable efforts, the Legion is responsible for organizing the city’s Remembrance Day ceremony. It also recognizes Decoration Day on the first Sunday in June. This includes both a ceremony at the ceno-
taph in Crescent Park, along with volunteers placing hundreds of Canadian flags on the graves of veterans. It is certainly easy to join; to become a member all you need to do is fill out a membership form and pay a reasonable fee. In fact, the rules are not as stringent as they once were; any Canadian citizen or citizen of an Allied nation who is 18 years of age or older is welcome to become a member of the Legion. If you want to know more, you can always stop by and visit, even if you’re not a member. The club encourages guests — someone will be glad to sign you in. You’re invited to come down anytime. Feel like giving back to the community? The Legion can always use more volunteers. The Legion is located at 268 High Street West. For more information, call 306-692-5453.

Plenty of resources available to keep seniors the safest drivers on the road In Saskatchewan senior citizens are the safest drivers on the road. Still, drivers need to be vigilant about keeping track of how their own driving abilities are changing as they age. “At SGI, we find that age is not a sole indicator if someone is safe to drive, said Leann Nixon, manager of SGI’s Medical Review Unit. “Somebody at 55 can be more unsafe than somebody at 80. Looking at the numbers from SGI’s 2017 Traffic Accident Facts report, the age group with the most frequent number of accidents peaks with drivers in their teens and again in their mid-20s. From there, drivers are in continually fewer accidents as they age. When SGI looked at the 10-year average they found the same trend.
It is performance on the road and not a driver’s age that is the best predictor of driving ability. On the SGI web site they listed a number of indicators of diminishing capacity for safe driving: having a series of minor collisions or near misses; having wandering thoughts or being unable to concentrate while driving; being unable to read ordinary road signs; getting lost on familiar roads; having other drivers honk at you frequently; and being spoken to about your driving by police, family or friends. “Confusing the gas and the break pedal is a big one as well, Nixon said before adding that “getting into car crashes or fender-benders, getting lost while driving and near-misses are all common indicators that a senior driver may want to look closer at their driving abilities.
SGI has an online test for aging drivers in their Mature Driver guide, but Nixon also recommended a refresher course that she had taken herself. “We have some information on the SGI web site, but the Saskatchewan Safety Council has a 55 Alive Mature Driving Refresher Course, which is excellent, Nixon said. “They will usually put it on free of charge if there are enough people interested. It’s a day course and they go over all of the rules of the road and they do some testing and ways people can look to see if they’re having some issues with driving. They can go over medications and talk about getting their vision checked and talking to your doctor about whether you’re still safe to drive. “That 55 Alive course is really excelContinues next page

lent. Anybody that takes that really does get a lot out of it.” In general, seniors are good about selfrestricting when and where they drive to put themselves in the most comfortable position possible behind the wheel. “From what we hear, as long as people aren’t affected by a cognitive impairment as they age, most seniors have good insight about maybe not driving downtown in Regina or Moose Jaw during busy hours and not driving after dark,” Nixon said. “We do see that people do have insight into restricting themselves, but if there’s something medically going on, but they may not see how it might affect them.”
Unit and we do have family members call us quite often when they’re worried about their mom or dad driving,” Nixon said. “We’ll tell them that maybe they should have a chat with the physician to see if there’s any medical condition that might be affecting them. “There are all kinds of resources on the web in terms of signs that families can look for, or that even the person driving can use.” If a driver has a medical condition or
health change which may affect their driving, it is their responsibility to report this to SGI’s Medical Review Unit to ensure that their insurance remains valid. This can be done at any time by going to a motor licence issuer, contacting the Medical Review Unit at 1-800-667-8015 ext. 6176 or at mruinquiries@sgi.sk.ca. SGI has a number of resources available online at www.sgi.sk.ca/aging and CAA also has resources and recommendations available www.caa.ca/seniors.
If you are concerned about your spouse, parent or another loved ones’ capabilities on the road, there are plenty of online resources available to offer advice on broaching the subject and determining is they are still safe to operate a vehicle. “People can call the SGI Medical Review

What is fake news and how can you spot it? gives birth to twins! — you can be pretty sure the story is not real. If a woman that age had actually given birth there is no way you would not have heard about it on every cable news show, radio program, or news site. That story would simply not have flown under the radar and got missed.
We all see lots of content posted on our social media feeds, but how we do know which information is trustworthy? How can you identify what is real and what is “fake news?” First and foremost, trust your instincts. If a story sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If it sounds completely outrageous — 90-year-old woman
It is important to get this right; we all tend to trust the information shared by our family and friends, which means you may be unintentionally misleading or misinforming your loved ones. Fake news is also difficult to debunk in part because of the “backfire effect,” which is where we tend to double down on our beliefs when we are presented with opposing facts. This information is particularly useful for seniors, as a recent study determined that people over 65 share seven times as many fake news stories than
younger internet users. How to tell if a story is real or not Does the story completely validate your preconceived beliefs? You may be a victim of confirmation bias, which is the tendency to seek out information that aligns with what we already believe. In short, don’t believe something just because you want it to be true. Try researching the other side. If you are not sure if a story is real or not, Visit the rest of the website — what other stories do you see? Sometimes, you will notice a potentially plausible story listed alongside stories that are obviously fake or extremely dubious in nature (e.g. “Justin Trudeau is a lizard person!”). have never heard of before. And check to make sure the website has the proper address: it should be cnn.com and not cnnbreakingworldnews.com. Is there an author for this story? Legitimate news stories should have a by-line that lets you know who wrote it. Fake news sites often lack this. Look for an outraged tone. Most fake news stories use outrage to grab your attention. If what you are reading makes you angry, it is very likely it was designed that way. This ensure the author earns your clicks, which makes them money. Can you find this story on other reputable news sites? Even if you believe an outlet like CNN might ignore a story because it goes against their biases, well-known opposing media outlets should have reported on it, too. Are there misspelled words?
Does the story use poor grammar? This may be because the story was written by someone who does not speak English. Prior to the 2016 U.S. election, there were 140 different fake news sites operating out of Macedonia. Finally, if you are ever in doubt, try checking out a fact-checking website. Snopes.com is one of the most well-known fact-checking sites. Their Facebook page regularly shares stories that have been thoroughly fact-checked. These stories are often the ones that most people are interested in, so liking their page is a great way to access their content. And before you share any content yourself, consider whether the information may be true or misleading, or whether it is worth sharing at all. Remember: we are all gatekeepers of information in the digital age and we have a responsibility to share credible information.

Moose Jaw Fire Department Fire Safety Tips for Older Adults Knowing what to do in the event of a fire is particularly important for older adults. At age 65, people are twice as likely to be killed or injured by fires compared to the population at large. And with our numbers growing every year - in the United States and Canada, adults age 65 and older make up about 12 percent of the population - it’s essential to take the necessary steps to stay safe. Smoke Alarms save lives. Have smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area. For the best protection, make sure the alarms are interconnected so when one sounds, they all sound. Have someone test your smoke alarms once a month by pushing the test button. Make sure everyone in your home can hear the smoke alarms. Replace all alarms that are 10 years old or older. If you are hard of hearing or remove your hearing aids to sleep, consider purchasing a strobe alarm and/or bed shaker. Install carbon monoxide alarms outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. Test alarms monthly. Know your local emergency number. Call 9-1-1 for all emergencies. Once you have escaped a fire, call 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s phone or a cell phone. In case of a medical emergency, have other emergency contact numbers (neighbor, family member) near the phone to call for assistance while waiting for first responder to arrive. Plan and practice your escape from fire and smoke. If possible, plan two ways out of every room in your home and two ways out of your home. Make sure windows and doors open easily. If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Plan your escape around your abilities. Have a landline telephone or cell phone and charger near your bed, with the local emergency number posted nearby in case you are trapped by smoke or fire. Consider subscribing to a medical alert system, which will provide you with a button you wear around your neck or on your wrist. If you have an emergency, just push the button and the service will send emergency responders. Have other necessary items near your bed such as medications, glasses, wheel chair, walker, scooter, or cane. Keep a flashlight and whistle near your bed to signal for help. Stay in the kitchen when frying food. If you leave the kitchen, even for a short time, turn off the burner and move the pan to a cool burner. Use a timer when cooking. If you are cooking on the stovetop and leave the room, take a timer, an oven mitt, or a wooden spoon as a reminder that you have something cooking. If a pan of food catches fire, slide a lid over it and turn off the burner. Don’t cook if you are drowsy from alcohol or medication. Do not cook when taking new medication until you know how it will affect you. Wear tight-fitting, rolled up, or short sleeves when cooking. Use oven mitts to handle hot pans. Use light-weight manageable pans. If your clothes catch fire: stop, drop, and roll. Stop (don’t run), drop gently to the ground, and cover your face with your hands. Roll over and over or back and forth to put out the fire. If you cannot drop and roll, keep a blanket or towel nearby to smother flames. If you use a wheelchair, scooter, or other device and are able to get to the floor, lock the device first before getting out and then roll until the flames are out. If you are a bystander, consider grabbing a rug, blanket, or fire blanket to help extinguish the flames. Use cool water for 3-5 minutes to cool the burn. Get medical help right away.

Moose Jaw Housing Authority provides affordable independent-living housing options for seniors The Moose Jaw Housing Authority’s (MJHA) mission is to deliver quality, safe and affordable housing and programs within the community. The Authority provides affordable housing for families, persons with disabilities and seniors 55 and over. The Housing authority says people can visit the Authority to find out the many options available for housing, especially seniors who want to live independently at an affordable rate. Jim Cannon, General Manager at the Moose Jaw Housing Authority says there are many options available at the Authority. “We provide housing to people who are looking for great housing solutions. So, low to moderate are targeted, seniors, families and people with
disabilities are targeted. However, we want to make sure that we are able to help anyone who may not see their self in any of those categories. We want to encourage anyone that needs housing to inquire with us.” He says there are several options available that may fit what someone is looking for. “Yes, our rents are based on incomes and some assets, as well as other information that you have to give to make sure you fit in the policy, but we want people to know that they can inquire, even if they do not feel that they match any of the categories or requirements. We want people to come talk with us. People may not think we’re an option, but we could be.” Specifically, for seniors, Cannon says
they have multi-unit buildings that come with various incentives for seniors. “We cater for seniors 55 and over. Most of our options are multi-unit buildings. We have places in downtown Moose Jaw, High Park Towers, Victoria, Temple Towers, Heritage Place that are senior high-rise buildings. In all those buildings, we require our tenants to live independently. We’re not a care facility, we simply provide a home. It’s independent living, however, we do have some initiatives to try to make that easier on people.” He outlined some of the options available for seniors. “At a couple of our larger buildings, Victoria Towers and High Park Towers, we have over 150 units in each building. We provide a meal program at those building and it Continues next page

is totally up to the tenant whether they want to participate; we have a cleaning contractor that people can also activate if they want to. The contractor comes in and cleans, does laundry etc. for a fee. Those are some of the things we have at the Authority as options available for seniors that will help them to live independently longer.” He says, however, that rents are based on income or any other source of earning for those who would love to apply. “Our rents are also based on income, roughly around 30% of income or other earning avenues. Again, we want people to come talk with us in order to get those details and see how we can help and for people to see if it is financially advantageous to live with us. We want to help in whatever way we can to find proper and affordable housing. We want to make sure that everyone has a home and if we can provide a roof over someone’s head, that’s what we’re here for.” Seniors can also maintain an active life-
style while living at one of the Authority’s properties. Within the senior/adult buildings, activities are planned to enhance the lives of tenants, such as games and seasonal activities. There is also FREE city bus service to Superstore, the Town ‘n’ Country Mall and the Moose Jaw Co-op. Saskatchewan Assisted Living Services (SALS) is also a support service option for persons living in Moose Jaw Housing Authority apartment buildings. Services are on a fee-for-service basis and include house keeping and laundry. Regular cleaning, appliance cleaning (fridge, stove, deep freeze), washing walls, cleaning windows and other seasonal cleaning, washing laundry, dry, iron, fold and sort personal laundry, sheets, towels and bedding. The MJHA Housing Services Officer co-ordinates SALS services between the tenant and the service providers. An Activity Worker is also available during the day and will discuss tenants needs and require-
ments. There are also active Tenant Association boards in senior buildings. The Authority says they are a great way to be active and create opportunities. For more information and how to apply, you can contact the Moose Jaw Housing Authority at 306-694-4055, email mjha@sasktel.net or visit their website at www.moosejawhousingauthority. com. International Destinations for Snowbirds
While U.S. states like Arizona, Florida, California, Texas, New Mexico, or Hawaii are popular destinations for Canadian snowbirds, there are also lots of international options. SnowbirdAdvisor.ca suggests these 10 options for Canadians looking to get away during the cold winter months.
Mexico After the U.S., Mexico is the most popular destination for Canadian snowbirds. There are plenty of popular destinations to enjoy, including Puerto Vallarta or the Mayan Riviera. Mexico has plenty to offer, including beautiful beaches and plenty of cultural and entertainment options. Costa Rica Canadians have been spending winters in Costa Rica for many years now. Cos-
ta Rica has plenty to explore, include rainforests, wildlife, and outdoor activities. Panama Panama is fast becoming a snowbird and retiree destination. Panama’s appeal includes the climate, favourable tax laws, proximity to Canada, and an affordable lifestyle. Note that shortterm accommodations may be hard to find until the market catches up to growing demand. Dominican Republic The Dominican Republic has popular tourism regions like Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and Samana, but some of the smaller towns near the capital feature plenty of affordable apartments and villas to rent.

will need to rent a car if you want to get around and see the sights. Spain Spain has lots to offer, including its rich history and many beautiful cities. Spain is known for its art, culture, food, and music. Of course, there may be a language barrier at first. You may be able to find affordable furnished apartments with kitchen facilities in the off-season. Once again, you will want to rent a car during your stay.
Thailand & Southeast Asia If you are up for an adventure than Thailand and Southeast Asia might be tempting. Cost of living is said to be reasonable. Of course, you can expect to find stunning beaches and the mouth-watering food is delectably exotic. Expect to experience a bit of a culture shock at first though.
When choosing an international travel destination you should consider: safety, accessibility, proximity, health care, political stability, language, food and water issues, and the community of fellow travellers. Be sure to check with your travel agent before planning your next winter destination.
Australia The beauty of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef, along with an Englishspeaking culture, will make Australia a favourable destination, despite the long plane ride. It is also worth considering that when you travel to Australia in the winter you will actually be arriving during the summer.
