Mensaje de la Artista Artist’s Statement Mi arte es la creación de un lenguaje visual que incorpora las formas de figuras y/o rostros de manera no convencional. Él propósito primordial es comunicar situaciones de la vida (ya sean agradables o no) y lograr la reacción y reflexión sobre dicha situación. Una reflexión que nos haga cuestionar nuestros verdaderos conocimientos sobre diversos temas que nos rodean y nos puede afectan. Una verdadera fusión entre el arte y la educación. Mi sentir es que el arte debe de educar y con el uso de las formas conocidas y la abstracción de otras, logro que el espectador mire intensamente y cuestione su propia percepción del mensaje de las obras. Utilizo los medios de acrílico, óleo, acuarela y medio mixto con un éstilo que entremezcla lo académico con lo expresivo hasta dar un sentir de surrealismo en algunas de las obras. Como artista estoy comprometida con la transformación de la percepción de nuestra humanidad. Para lograr esa transformación es necesaria la concienciación social a través del impacto visual de mi arte. Para complementar e intensificar las exposiciones de mis obras y como parte de mi trayectoria de artista/educadora, comparto charlas, conferencias y talleres traídos por mi o por otros profesionales de los temas relacionados con la exposicion del momento. Es así que logro la fusión deseada llevando al público: un arte educativo. Un arte que transmite un mensaje de pensar sobre temas muy propios de nuestras vidas. My art is the creation of a visual language that incorporates forms and figures in a conventional way. Its primary importance is to communicate situations in life (be them pleasant or not) and achieve a reaction and refection about said situation. A reflection that will permit us to question ourselves about our true knowledge concerning a diversity of topics that surround us and may affect us. Truly a fusion between art and education. It is my heartfelt feeling that art should educate, and with the use of known forms and the abstraction of others, I am able to make the viewer look more intensely and question his or her own perception of the meaning conveyed in the works. I use acrylics, oils watercolors, and mixed media with a style that intermixes academic art with expressionism until even a sense of surrealism is felt in certain pieces. As an artist I am committed with the transformation of the perception towards our own humanity. To obtain transformation it is necessary to achieve some form of social consciousness through the impact of my art. To complement and intensify my exhibitions of my work, I share conferences, talks and workshops brought by myself or other professionals concerning the topics of the moment. This is how I achieve the desired fusion presented to the public: educational art. Art that transmits a thoughtful message about topics concerning our lives.

Has Cambiado mi Lamento en Baile (detalle)
El título de la Exposición, “Mujeres, Madres y Musas” busca rendir homenaje a las mujeres y su diversidad de expresiones. Dicha exposición comprende con sobre 40 obras en acuarela, acrílico, óleo y medio mixto, incluyendo algunos ensamblajes y medios al relieve de la artista Gladiola Sotomayor. Las obras de arte expuestas conllevan un trabajo de pinturas híbridas únicas que varían desde pequeñas que miden 2” x 4” hasta monumentales que miden más de 5 pies de altura y longitud. El tema de la exposición puede verse obvio a tratarse del género femenino, en este caso desde el punto de vista de una mujer artista. El título da referencia explícita a Mujeres y Madres, palabras claves en toda la temática de la exposición. Es en la palabra MUSAS donde algunas personas ”elevan la ceja” (expresión en inglés cuando existen escepticismo antes algo) ante la posible denotación pagana de la palabra usada por una cristiana. Según la mitología griega, Las Musas eran deidades griegas que protegían las artes y las ciencias. La palabra es alusiva al coloquio entre los artistas ya que la Musa representa todo aquello que sirve de inspiración para un artista, ya sea físico, espiritual, real o imaginario. Las Musas que se revelan en la exposición son la inspiración de la artista tales como: la lluvia, el sonido del mar, una noche estrellada, el sonido de la bambú, el viento, el agua, la lectura, y para una buena parte de esta exposición en particular, su Musa fue estar presente y ser participe de un evento muy especial, el nacimiento de su nieto en el hogar. Sin quitarle importancia a las otros dos palabras del título: Mujeres y Madres; la artista vuelve y usa su estilo de mundos juntos pero no paralelos en en el título cuando transforma la Palabra Musas en el Acrónimo M.U.S.A.S. que significa Mujeres Sobrevivientes de Abuso Sexual. Además de la experiencia visual, se ofrecerán también talleres para estimular la creatividad y charlas educativas sobre la humanización del embarazo y parto, la lactancia materna, el auto-estima de la mujer, el hilo de las generaciones, la lucha, la liberación, la violencia, entre otros temas. La integración armoniosa de las impresionantes obras con charlas educativas llevarán al público y a nuestra sociedad a apreciar y aumentar conciencia sobre estos temas, tocados en ocasiones con tabúes y prejuicios. Esta singular exposición invita a todos a desvestirse de desinformación y entregarse a una experiencia de cambio de perspectivas que nos puede ofrecer el apoderamiento de nuestras “Mujeres, Madres y Musas”.
The title of the exhibition “Mujeres, Madres y Musas” (Women, Mothers and Muses) is intended to honor women in their diverse expressions. Said exhibition is composed of over 40 works in watercolor, acrylic, oils, and mixed medium, including some ensembles and high relief pieces by the artist Gladiola Sotomayor. The pieces to be exhibited consist of a unique blend of paintings that vary from very small measuring 2” by 4” to very monumental measuring 5’ in length and width. The theme of the exhibition can seem very obvious concerning the feminine gender in this case from a woman artist’s point of view. The title gives explicit reference to “Women, Mothers and Muses”, key words throughout the entire theme of the exhibition. It is in the word Muses that some people raise their eyebrow before the use of a word of pagan origins used by a Christian. According to Greek Mythology, the muses were Greek deities that protected the arts and sciences. The word is allusive to the wordage used by artist since for them the muse represents anything that serves as inspiration be it physical or spiritual, real or imaginary. The muses exposed in the exhibit are the artist’s inspiration like the rain, the sound of the ocean, starry night, the sound of the bamboo, the wind, water, lecture and for a good part of the exhibition, her Muse was to be present and participate in a very special event... the home birth of her grandchild. Without making the other two words of the title less important ( Women and Mothers); the artist reuses her style of worlds together but not parallel when she transform the word Muses in the title to stand for the Spanish Acronym MUSAS which means Women Survivors of Sexual Abuse ( Mujeres Sobrevivientes de Abuso Sexual.) Besides the visual experience there will be workshops to stimulate creativity and educational talks about the humanization of pregnancy and birth, breastfeeding, self- esteem for women, the thread of generations, conflict, liberation, violence among other themes. The harmonious integration of the impressive art works with educational talks will take the public and our society to appreciate and increase awareness about these topics many times associated with tabus and prejudice. This unique exhibition invites everyone to shed themselves of disinformation and surrender themselves to an experience of change in perspectives that can offer empowerment to our “Women, Mothers and Muses.”

El Arte The Art La obra de la artista Gladiola Sotomayor transmite mensajes temáticos con énfasis desde lo espiritual hasta lo cotidiano usando una narrativa con tendencias surrealistas. La figura y el rostro son elementos que comprenden la mayor parte de su obra pictórica. Son usados como los máximos exponentes de su expresión y convierten el lenguaje corporal y facial de simple pose a narraciones exquisitas. Su integración de otros elementos que crean movimiento visual dentro del plano pictórico permite al espectador penetrar espacios sensacionales que dan continuidad a la narración pictórica y lo transporta a una narración espiritual. Su arte es una mezcla de expresiones enigmáticas utilizando mayormente la figura en forma realista o estilizada. La artista representa la experiencia humana con un dominio de los elementos pictóricos. The work of the artist Gladiola Sotomayor transmits themed messages from everyday events to spiritual experiences using a painterly narrative with surrealist tendencies. Figures and faces comprise the vast majority of her pictorial work. They are used as the maximum components of expression and transform the body language from simple poses to exquisite narratives. Her inclusion of other elements that create visual movement within the pictorial plane allows the observer to penetrate sensational spaces that give continuity to the pictorial narrative and transports him/her to a spiritual narrative. Her art is a mixture of enigmatic expressions using the human form realistically or stylized. The artist represents the human experience with the mastery of the pictorial elements.

la Artista The Artist Gladiola Sotomayor ha estado pintando por más de 30 años dedicando los últimos 10 ha pintar a tiempo completo y a dar clases privadas de arte. Tiene una maestría de “University of the Arts” de Filadelfia. Ha exhibido en colectivas y solos en Chicago, Filadelfia, Nueva Jersey, California, Florida y Puerto Rico recibiendo varios honores y mención honorífica por sus obras. Las mismas se pueden encontrar en varias colecciones privadas y públicas a través de la nación estadounidense y de su tierra nativa, Puerto Rico. Es conocida por su exhibición rodante titulada: “Expresiones de Mujer” la cual incluyó conferencias y talleres llevados a cabo en universidades del país (1995-2001.) Su libro: “Directorio de Arte” publicado en formato bilingüe (1997) fue recibido de manera favorable en muchas instituciones artísticas y usado como libro de texto en un curso de Mercadeo de Arte para el Fomento de Empresas para Jóvenes en 1997. Gladiola recibió el título de “Certificación Nacional en Educación” por su excelencia en el campo Pedagógico al usar las artes visuales como lenguaje común en la instrucción de estudiantes de escuelas elementales de diversas partes del mundo. Recientemente organizó la colectiva: “Sembrando Semillas”, una exposición educativa con la temática de educación artística y reciclaje. Gladiola Sotomayor has been painting for over 30 years dedicating the last 10 to painting full time and giving private art clases. She holds a Master’s Degree from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has exhibited in solos and collectives in Chicago, Philadelphia, New Jersey, California, Florida and Puerto Rico receiving honorary awards in various instances. Many of her pieces can be found in both Public and Private collections in the Mainland and in her native homeland, Puerto Rico. Her traveling exhibition titled “Expressiones de Mujer” (Expressions of Women) was accompanied with educational talks and conferences to many of the Country’s Universities (1995-2001).The “Art Directory” which she published in bilingual format (1997) received favorable welcome in many educational institutions and used as a textbook for an art marketing course in Fomento the same year.Gladiola received the National Board Certification for her excellence in Education and integrating the visual arts with the teaching of a new language acquisition to foreign students. She recently organized the educational collective “Sembrando Semillas” with the theme of art education and recycling.
