"SYMPHONYH OF JEWELS OPUS 2" - NEW BOOK CELEBRATING CELLIST-TURNEDDESIGNER

ANNA HU PROVES A VIRTUOSO IN CRAFTING A SYMPHONY OF JEWELLERY

Anna Hu is trained cellist and world renown fine jeweller, who designs exquisie jewels like a music producer, relying on strong synesthesia during the creative process: She perceives each precious stone as a musical note. “I cannot design without music,” she says, from a quiet Bach cello concerto to Stravinsky’s bravura Firebird. She calls her major pieces symphonies and likewise the limited-edition art books on her work, Symphony of Jewels: Opus 1 (2012) and Opus 2 (forthcoming in October), both published by Vendome Press. Anna as a Taiwanese-born daughter of a precious-stone dealer and a pearl and jade expert, has worked for Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Christie’s before founding her namesake company in New York in 2007. Just a few years later, her Côte d’Azur brooch—an extravagant foliate pavé-set piece centered by a massive Burmese sapphire—sold for $4.57 million at Christie’s Geneva, an auction record at the time for a „Sharing Dish, Spices Fried Rice, Kaeng Phed Ped Yang, Lahsooni contemporary jewelry designer. Approaching her art with a distinctly East-meets-West philosophy and aesthetic, she constantly breaks new ground in haute jewelry design. Here, in the second volume of a projected multivolume series book, Anna Hu looks back at the last five years Trained at the Walnut Hill School of the Arts near Boston as a concert cellist. After receiving degrees from the jewelry design program at New York’s FIT, the history of decorative arts and design program at Parsons, and arts administration at Columbia Universit. An 18th century aristrocrat, Joséphine retained memories of life on tropical islands. As Empress, she reinvented the codes of fashion and taste, popularizing her own vision of elegance.

Leona König chairwoman of The International Music Foundation for Highly Gifted Children In Interview about her Foundation work with her children, high end art and fashion

Always appropriate and elegant in both her manners and appearence Leona is perfectly dressed for any occasion. She is involved in highest art and fashion circles, her reperoire in classical music spans across masters of romantic classical period, and noble Parisian fashion houses count among her suppliers of the latest couture. Like for the day we met Leona wearing a total off-White look and accessories.

"Monaco stands for relaxation...you will find everything you need here." Leona König, founder and chairwoman of the International Music Foundation for Highly Gifted Children (IMF) agreed to meet us in Monte-Carlo for an indepth interview about her Foundation work and the newly established annual Music Prize Goldene Note and Award ceremony, that took place for the first time earlier this year in Vienna, at prestigious Wiener Konzerthaus. They say that rain brings luck, and we were lucky to meet Leona during her busy schedule, for a tea break at Hotel Hermitage, just as the light rain started. MORALMODA MAGAZINE

What attracts you to the Principality of Monaco? Leona: "Monaco stands for relaxation and enjoyement. It is very beautiful to spend some time here during the year. I would not say all year long, but a part of the year definetly. Monaco is specially beautiful during the summer when the sea is really fantastic and you will find everything you need here. Even if Monaco has its Opera House and some culture programe going on during the summer; with concerts at Prince's Palace, which is very nice offer, for me being based now in Austria, I am very spoiled in terms of cultural offer, and of course the difference to here is something that you cannot compare.

Leona is a lady, always correct in her manners and civil, engaged in our talk with great enthusiasm, not just because we talk about her passion, the Foundation, but also because she genuinely has interest and emphaty towards others. Leona established the Foundation out of great compassion to children obviously, regardless of their social and economic background. Trough her dedicated work, the talented small ones get to perform at the greatest musical stages like the famous Großer Saal in Vienna.

LARA HELLER AT THE LONDON LEICESTER SQUARE PREMIER OF "WELCOME TO CURIOSITY"

this a fascinating topic and am curious what the best use of this revolutionary technology will be. "Zoe And The Astronaut" is another film being released later this year. It's a heavy drama with sci-fi elements to it and I play a feisty Brazilian lady that adds some lighter colour to the film. “When i am in Monaco I am more set on holiday style. Of course I work on the phone ,but when I come back to Vienna I start to become more like a machine, and already on the plane I am thinking what I have to do, which apointhments. I think this has to do with the sun and the sea, becasuse the sun always influences us to be little bit lazy. So I always compensate When im in Vienna and here I am little bit more relaxing. Monaco is organizing these beautiful summer concerts at the Palais with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. It is always beautiful experience. breath in the atmosphere of this beautiful Palais with its beautiful architecture, listening beautiful music. I think this is so important. And of course this gives me idea to have my children performing at this beautiful stage.”

Monaco is more a place to enjoy and therefore people settle here. Those with permanent residence do not pay tax, this is how Monaco is basically, but it is nice to have this option and many people are happy here. I used to live in Monaco for four years. Today I am spending more time in Vienna, where I have started my Foundation for gifted children 2,5 years ago. In Vienna, I have my daughter, and I am running my Foundation there. Maybe in the future circumstances will provide an opportunity to start some Foundation related work in Monaco, but this is all in the future." How do you enroll talented children ?

Award ceremony with Leona Köning and talented award recepients at the Musikverein Wien in the famous chamber treasure Saal.

Leona: "Since my daughter is playing, I have some experience, but I must tell you that there is almost nothing for musically talented children here in Monaco. So if you wish to develop your child's talent you ought to get private lessons or go to L' Académie Internationale d'été de Nice, which is a good one, but not here in Monaco itself, its a bit difficult, let’s say.

“I am fortunate that in Vienna, they want to support my Foundation work in every way that they can.”

If I do start something here, I should not only concentrate on Monaco then, because Monaco itself is very small. I would need to include Monaco and its surroundings, namely France, and towns like Nice and Cannes, too. And if I move back to Monaco I could have this in Monte-Carlo. It is quite important to have here, since many wealthy residents, who could support children and do something are here too. The thing is to find people who are willing to take part and who understand the music. Maybe most people living here are not that focused on music, the interest let’s say is going into different direction, so this would make my work little more complicated, namely to find the right people, who support and love music. I have the know-how of how to do it in Austria and maybe I need to adapt different know-how here.

“I wanted to make this possible for the small ones, because I saw this potential... I saw many gifted children and they can perform at such beautiful stages. This was my motivation to create something that was even in Vienna non-existent.”

MORALMODA MAGAZINE cover story

Because in Vienna I am quite wellknown and in Austria I have already support from the most important institutions in the world, because the Musikverein Wien and Wiener Konzerthaus - Die Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft are regarded as the most important institutions of classical music in the world, and have great impact internationally; all the world comes to Austria to study classical music. For an example, we have very close collaboration partner with the University of Music and Performing Arts of Vienna. Since all the world wants to come to study at this University, I make special development programme with them for the gifted children. Such institutions have centuries old tradition and the roots of this meatier are in Austria, which is not the case in Monaco. I am fortunate that in Vienna, they want to support my Foundation work in every way that they can." Which music do you listen to? Leona: "My hearth is classical music. Although my children are not playing only classical composers.

The biggest and most important moment for me was my daughter. She started playing at the age of three and half years. And she is 10 years old now, and she loves to play. Basically we were travelling a lot for competitions in France and surrounding area. And at the moment that we established the Foundation I moved to Austria. So this was the first step in my work. and I founded something that was missing; for the youngest musically gifted children there were not many concerts or competitions. Basically I filled the gap there for something that did not exist even in Austria. I gave the children the opportunity to play concerts, to perform in beautiful historic institutions where they would dream to perform or where they could only be invited as successful adults when they reach age of 20-25. Or they maybe never come to Musikverein Wien or Wiener Konzerthaus. So, I wanted to make this possible for the small ones, because I saw this potential, and I saw it in my daughter also. There are many gifted children they can perform at such beautiful stages. This was my motivation to create something that was even in Vienna non-existent."

What is your prefered music or instrument at work? Leona: "Orchestra of course. It is the most beautiful; with all the instruments. If we talk solo, then I like also piano, because to me piano is the most beautiful instrument. From music symphonies it will be Beethoven, the 9th symphony it is unbeatable Chopin; these are important among the romantic composers. What I am not much crazy about is baroque music. But when the children learn to play and if they need to get higher then they need to be able to play it, too, and equally if it is modern music or classical. My daughter is playing many contemporary composers pieces, which are too many to be listed, and it sounds incredible, and it is so important to have this.

cover story/ Leona König

All images protected: Leona König in a Paris photoshooting with photographer Irina Valeri. What I really love is Chopin, which is also the favorite composer of my daughter and Beethoven is fantastic. Liszt is something I like a lot, and Debussy is also beautiful." How does your Foundation organize Award ceremonies. and how can children enroll for the competition? Leona: "It is award ceremony which takes place each year. Golden Note award for the next year will go to chamber music and it is going to be at the Vienna Concert house at the 22nd of March 2019. I have it always around the same time, and now the programme description is prepared: children know, all music schools get information how to shortlist their members, and we have already everything online, so the children can get prepared by themselves. They know the categories, they know the prizes, they know all the details. The audition, where the children will be chosen, takes place in February and if selected they may perform in the Vienna Concert house and they may perform at the Golden Note Award night, and they will immediately know who will be the winner. There will be winner for each category, so they know this after the audition. " Can everybody join the Foundation work? Leona: "Yes of course, via the website or on social media, so anybody can pay a contribution by buying the ticket." When do you release tickets for the Goldene Note Award and concert evening? Leona: "Two month before, so from February onwards."

MORALMODA MAGAZINE cover story

cover story/ Leona König

How do you select the music form for the competition? Leona: "Every year I have different music instrument. Last year it was violin, next year it will be chamber music. In this way I always get to work with more children and new talents. They get financial prizes, they get Master Classes, maybe in the following year I will get to give Master Classes here in Monaco, it would be also amazing experience for the children. For an example the last year I had Master Classes at the Music Academy in Prague. This was was very beautiful for the children to come to Prague and see music classes, the last year I had even the principal of the Music Academy from Prague University, basically teaching them. So each time and each year it is with different children, different possibilities, it is in different places, maybe it will be here in Monaco next year."

It is creative work, which takes a lot of time and involves a lot of people, who are creating all these pieces, especially for the haute couture there are outfits that take months and month to be ready. And also for February is also important month the fashion designers it is even in the international fashion more difficult, because they have calendar, and I know you like to think how to create new things. beautiful style and fashion? And the clients, who are ready to buy they are waiting impatiently for Leona: "Fashion is my other passion new creations and new show and yes, I love most the Paris Fashion Week, namely the Couture Fashion new ideas. And they are begging that they like it because sometimes Week and Ready-to-wear Fashion Week for ladies. Of course, it is not you love fashion brand and it can be always that I have time to be there, that for 3 years it is catastrophic, it is disaster, you don't love it and let but this is what I really enjoy, say Versace is not doing well, so its because it is like art. There is art such as music, but then you can like this, and not all designers make art in fashion. are always designing what you like."

What I really love is Chopin, which is also the favorite composer of my daughter and Beethoven is fantastic. Liszt is something I like a lot, and Debussy is also beautiful."

When I see something beautiful I immediately transfer it to what possibilities we could have. I do every year Golden Note for the different instruments, so it was already for the piano, last year it was violin, the next year it will be for the chamber music . So each year I have the circulation of the children . So like this I get always more and different children . They get financial prizes, Master Classes. Which are your long term visions and plans for the foundation?

All images protected: Leona König in a Paris photoshooting with photographer Irina Valeri.

This September I am initiating discussions with the Austrian television for a great project to bring the Golden Note to the television. I would like to combine my foundation work with the government policies and support. This September I will try to meet with the Cultural Minister of Austria, and we will see what kind of support the Ministry could provide to the Foundation. I am sure that if I will really be concentrated that we will have some news to share soon. And we will see what the future will bring. I also could have this at political level in Monaco, which will for sure not be easy but for sure not unmakable." BY NERMIN AHMET PHOTOGRAPHER IRINA VALERI

Every summer, the Grimaldi Forum Monaco produces a large thematic exhibition. The Monaco Yacht Show is the world leader event in superyachting. Set in September in the iconic Port Hercules, the MYS represents the pinnacle of the superyacht lifestyle against the glamorous backdrop of Monaco since 1991.

Every year, the world’s most respected shipyards display 120 extraordinary one-off superyachts and megayachts, of which 40 new launches are annually unveiled in a worldwide debut. Total value of this year's superyachts at the show amounted to EUR 3,000,000,000. Monaco Yacht Show is one of the most influential business networks on Earth.

On docks, the MYS curates the showcase of a selection of 580 leading companies in the industry: from the most reputable superyacht builders and nautical suppliers, top yacht designers, luxury manufactures and the best brokerage houses to the most sought-after tenders and water toys, prestige cars, helicopter and private jet manufacturers.

The Monaco Yacht Show is an event by Informa and gratefully benefits from the recognition and the support of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco.

The average value of yachts on display, has increased to EUR 27 million this year, compared to an average EUR 25.9 million..

EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY of best boats and yachts

MORALMODA MAGAZINETRAVEL

Looking back to the origins of the Show, it’s amazing to think that just 32 superyachts were on display in 1991 and, even by the 8th edition, there were just 80 yachting related exhibitors ready to participate. As the yachting industry itself expanded exponentially over the past 20 years, so did the Monaco Yacht Show, with the 2018 edition expecting 580 exhibitors hailing from 38 different countries and an unrivalled total of 121 of the world’s most impressive superyachts on display.

As of early August 2018, the world’s fleet of operational superyachts over 30m amounted to 4,889 yachts. 1,811 yachts were completed in the last ten years (2008-2017), which illustrates how fleet growth has accelerated. Not only has the fleet grown, the average size of yachts has grown too.

For young, self-made millennials still growing their business interests, yachting is an occasional pastime, being only part of their fast-moving lifestyles. They don’t think of a yacht as an end in itself, but as a sort of floating pied-à-terre for attending events like the Monaco Grand Prix or the Cannes Film Festival. They’re not interested in huge cabins, but they are into water sports and lots of exterior space for entertaining large groups of friends. They might spend a weekend on board in Sardinia, go back to work, and then join the boat the following weekend in Ibiza. It’s a different concept from the traditional two-week cruise in the summer.

Heuer, Gulf, Monaco, Steve McQueen, Le Mans: A partnership that has the automotive heritage of TAG Heuer at its core, TAG Heuer uses global partnership with Gulf Oil International, to develop new editions, including the Monaco Gulf which was presented on the occasion of the signing. Gulf has been a wellknown player in the automotive industry for over 115 years. It was the first company to drill for oil below the sea, and in 1913, became the first in the world to open a petrol station.

The Monaco Gulf 2018 Special Edition

"It's a real privilege to forge links with Gulf and its history in automotive sport... It's a prestigious and emotional partnership. We share the same passion and this promises good things for the future!" Jean-Claude Biver, CEO of TAG Heuer and Chairman of the Watch Division of LVMH Group

Launched simultaneously in Geneva and New York on 3rd March 1969, the Heuer Monaco was the first square and water-resistant automatic chronograph in the history of Swiss watchmaking. As a matter of fact, the watch shared the spotlight with Steve McQueen, who insisted on wearing it throughout filming of the film "Le Mans" in 1971 when he drove the famous GulfPorsche 917K. However, the origins of the revolution lay inside the famous Calibre 11 that was the 1st automatic chronograph movement to be commercialised in the history of watchmaking. Immediately recognisable and often copied, the "McQueen Monaco" has become a muchcoveted watch at auctions and in collections.

MB&F : ANNOUNCING HOROLOGICAL MACHINE NO.9 Inside, an equally complex manual winding movement developed fully in house; the result of three years of development, with the accumulated experience that came with our previous 14 calibres. A nod to Horological history and our Legacy Machine line, HM9’s two lateral pods each house a flying balance wheel and fully independent regulating system, visible under domes of sapphire crystal. A third pane of sapphire crystal reveals the central gearbox of the HM9 engine: a planetary differential that averages the output of both balance wheels to provide one stable reading.

Reminiscent of a jet engine, the HM9 case is a geometrically complex combination of milled sapphire crystal and grade 5 titanium. When we first brought the design to our manufacturing Friends, their response was clear: not possible. We did not conceive HM9 with current manufacturing methods in mind; its extreme curves and acute angles required new manufacturing standards and techniques.

HM9 ‘Flow’ debuts in two titanium editions limited to 33 pieces each: - the ‘Air’ edition comes with a dark movement and aviatorstyle dial; - the ‘Road’ edition has a rose gold plated movement. Retail price is CHF 168,000 + VAT (USD 182,000 + tax). Images: MB&F.

David McCallum - composing textile art with music software processes Transmitting digital techniques on textiles produces new interesting textile designs, new research shows. The doctoral student and the artist David McCallum derives his study from the similarities between sticking and writing software for computers. As a child, David McCallum's mother taught him to stick. After working on writing computer software for many years, he felt he wanted to reconnect to his art. And in his dissertation titled - "Glitching the Fabric: Strategies of New Media Art Applied to the Codes of Knitting and Weaving" he creates textile art with digital software techniquest. "In particular, I have looked closely at textile structures like knitting, satin and woven dog-tooth patterns. I test these techniques in an artistic context. Some of the experiments produced artwork, some produced techniques that could be used for textiles or digital expressions, and some did not work at all, "said David. The results show that application of new media technicians to textile structures can create interesting expressions, which provides the basis for further research. David McCallum shows that it is fruitful to intentionally include form errors in some textile patterns - a strategy used extensively in so-called glitch art, which is a digital art form where analogue or technical errors are used as part of aesthetics. "I also show that weave patterns, especially dog-teeth patterns, can be used as the basis for a room for expression if you manipulate some of its parameters. A certain process creates a framework for what is possible. The space within the frame can be navigated by changing the parameters of the process." "I hope my work can be a small gift to textile artists and designers and present new ways for them to explore their crafts." - When textiles are linked to calculation, it is often felt that the status of textiles is raised because they resemble or can lead to calculation. But textiles do not need height status." Do you have any brands or designer in mind? The research is really an exploration of technique, and not of application of expression, so there were no considerations about brands or designers. But, application of the work to functional textiles (such as for fashion, architecture, or furniture) is a logical next step. I would love to collaborate with textile and clothing designers, experimenting with some of these techniques. I never really jumped into colour, and I imagine that there could really be some dramatic effects if we explored that area. In the end, will your method allow for the algorithm software in the future to produce textile designs and works on its own.? Is your method equally applicable for small scale and mass scale textile production? The part of the work that applies most to textile production necessarily requires some kind of computer-controlled or jacquard weaving machine, so it would only work in production workflows that already use those kinds of machines. There is the opportunity to explore applying some of these processes to handweaving, but that would still need an intensive research phase before we can generate practicable workflows and expressions.

About David NG McCallum is a guest researcher at the Smart Textiles Design Lab. Heis a practicing new-media artist and has exhibited internationally, working with performance, interactive and mobile installations, wearable electronics, and everything lo-fi. McCallum studied music composition and physics at Queen’s University (Kingston, Canada), earned an MSc in Art and Technology at Chalmers University of Technology (Göteborg), was the Editor in Chief of Musicworks magazine. Contact: david@sintheta.org Source: www.sintheta.org ABSTRACT "The purpose of the research has been to explore the creative possibilities in applying strategies derived from the domain of digital media and glitch art to a range of processes in the domain of textiles—specifically weaving, knitting, bobbin lace—with particular attention to the role of notations and coding in both domains. The enquiry presented in this dissertation is based upon the proposition that there are creative possibilities that arise when approaches and strategies from new-media and glitch art are transferred to some textile processes, and that this is possible because objects of new media and textile objects share features not limited to the grid. The research focuses on strategies from digital media and glitch art in the domain of computing and applies these strategies directly to the code and structures in the domain of textiles. ... The work presented in this dissertation is thus an initial set of experiments laying the groundwork for future explorations employing this transfer of strategies, based on innovative cross-relations and exchange between the domain of computing and the domain of textile production."
