HEALTH AND SAFETY During the summer camp and conference schedule a nurse or EMT and certified first-aiders operate under standing orders of a local physician 24 hours a day. In the event a camper requires emergency medical attention beyond first aid, whenever possible parents/guardians are first contacted to apprise them of the situation. Parents/guardians are notified immediately if their child becomes ill or extremely homesick. Swimming and boating are carefully supervised by certified lifeguards. One lifeguard is provided for every 25 swimmers, with a minimum of two guards at all times. In addition, lifeguards are trained as first responders in first aid and CPR. GENERAL INFORMATION MEALS AND LODGING Three family-style meals are served daily, as well as an evening snack. Special dietary needs can be accommodated with at least one week advance notice. In the afternoons, campers are given the opportunity to visit the camp store to purchase ice cream, drinks or snacks, clothing and trinkets. Campers sleep in cabins with 6 bunk beds (with side rails) sleeping 12 per cabin. Eight of the cabins include bathrooms and showers. Counselors and Jr. Counselors sleep in the cabin with the campers.

CAMPER RESPONSIBILITIES As disciples of Christ living in Christian community, campers are expected to respect each other and their privacy. At the outset of the program, cabin groups and the group as a whole covenant to follow certain guidelines for living in community. (guns, knives, etc.) and fireworks are strictly prohibited, and possession thereof is grounds for removal from the Center. Campers are responsible for their own personal belongings. Please leave valuables at home. This is a week away from the normal routine, when we gather to relate to God and each other. Electronic devices, including cell phones, games and ipods are an intrusion and a distraction from the camp experience—for the user and for others as well. Please leave them at home! At the discretion of the camp Dean, these items may be confiscated and returned to the camper at the end of the week. Pets of any kind are prohibited at Hope Center. Page 7

Staff and Volunteer Opportunities One of the hallmarks of the Moravian Church today is a zeal for mission work and education. Volunteers play a vital role in Hope Center’s ministry through their roles as counselors, Jr. counselors, service day volunteers, program leaders, nurses and as visionaries through membership on boards and committees STAFF Staff members are made up of both volunteers and paid staff. Volunteers are pastors and other adults (18 years and older) serving as conference deans and counselors. Some camps and conferences also utilize Jr. Counselors. Specialty Camp specialists are adult volunteers who have documented training and expertise in the focus of the camp. Family and adult programs are led by pastors and lay leaders. Paid staff members are young adults who are trained by the Center Administrator. They prepare and serve meals, and provide office support, lifeguarding services, facility maintenance and cleaning. Perhaps you feel led to give the gift of Hope through one of the following opportunities.

2012 Summer Staff

Camp Counselors ...must be at least 18 years of age (and two years older than the campers). Counselors stay in cabins with campers and provide supervision throughout the day. Jr. Counselors ...must be at least 16 years of age (and two years older than the campers being supervised). Serving Pre-Primary, Primary and Middler Conferences, Swim and Fishing Camps, Jr. Counselors stay in cabins with campers and assist Counselors and program staff throughout the day. Contact the Center to volunteer or obtain more information on how YOU might be a part of Hope Center’s volunteer ministry! Page 10

Support Hope Center Hope Center plans to add or replace several major pieces of equipment in 2013. Any contributions large or small for these projects will be gratefully accepted. You may include a contribution with your camp registration payment (note the amount on the appropriate line), or simply send a check with a note telling what project it is for. Contributions are encouraged from individuals, families, congregations and church groups. New Dishwasher, Dining Hall: Hall The current dishwasher in the Dining Hall is “vintage. It is too small to wash sheet trays, pans, or large pots, which currently must be washed by hand. The trays for the dirty dishes hold only a small number of dishes at one time. Parts are no longer available. A new modern heavyduty dishwasher will cost over $10,000. Half of that cost has been contributed by the United Brethrens Congregation on Staten Island. Hope Center has raised another $2500. Your contribution will help us have a new machine installed by the opening of the 2013 camping season. Assisted Entry Lift, Couch Memorial Pool: As of January 31, 2013, all public swimming pools must be equipped with an assisted entry system for those with disabilities. The pool at Hope Center is considered a public pool, and we must install such a lift, at a cost of $6,000. This must be done as soon as the pool opens in the spring; your contribution, even after it is installed, will help make this necessity a reality. Campership Fund: Fund In 2012, requests for campership assistance were almost triple those from 2011. Your contribution will help assure that everyone who wants to come to camp will be able to come to camp. General Contribution: Contribution A general contribution will be used wherever the need is greatest. Your support will enhance our ability to serve the recreational and spiritual needs of the youth, adults and families who visit Hope Center. Hope Center is a not-for-profit organization operated by the Eastern District of the Moravian Church. All contributions are tax-deductible. On behalf of the hundreds of children and adults who benefit from Hope Center, thank you for your generosity.
