LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Mariner Family and Friends, Our Founder, Blessed Basil Moreau, envisioned that, “Holy Cross will grow like a mighty tree and constantly shoot forth new limbs and new branches which will be nourished by the same sap and endowed with the same life.” Here at Moreau Catholic, we are growing indeed! We are expanding upon our commitment to excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts in new and exciting ways. We are thrilled to add several new courses to our rigorous college prep curriculum this year, including AP African American Studies and Data Science. We are proud to be recognized by the College Board for our academic excellence, earning the Silver Honor Roll award as well as an AP Access Award for the extraordinary number of students in our diverse family who are taking and passing AP exams. Our athletic teams continue to successfully compete at the league level and beyond, and our student athletes continue to be celebrated for their exceptional academic achievements while also excelling in their respective sports. One of our coaches who is also a faculty member and our Social Justice Coordinator, Coach Jerico Abanico, was recently honored as the NFHS California North Coast Section Coach of the Year for his tremendous work as our Head Coach of Boys’ Volleyball. The arts continue to thrive at Moreau Catholic, with our Band, Music, Choir, Dance, Drama, and Visual Arts programs presenting new opportunities for Mariners to showcase their gifts and harness their creativity as they inspire audiences and bring hope. While our curricular and co-curricular programs are growing, our student enrollment is growing as well! We have waiting pools again for admissions and we are humbled by the number of families who want to access the gift of a lifechanging Holy Cross education. Our desire to support these families and maintain excellence in our programs is matched by the zeal of our Advancement team– tireless educators working to increase the engagement and philanthropic support of our alumni and community. As we grow in our outreach, connections, and reconnections with our alumni and community, we remember the words of our beloved Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC, who would often say, “We are all in this together folks!” Together we can make anything happen. We are also thrilled to share that we are growing our campus with a new Music and Band Center! This critical new space will meet the needs of our students today and our students in the future who will use the space to learn, teach, perform, and share their voices with our world. Please check out our website to learn more about this exciting project and to get involved with helping us build it! It is a gift of life to grow. It is a gift at Moreau Catholic to grow from a strong foundation. With gratitude, we honor our founding Brothers of the Holy Cross, our dedicated Board of Trustees, our engaged alumni, our generous volunteers and community partners, our extraordinary administrators, faculty, staff, and coaches, and our phenomenal students and families for being our partners in growth and mission. With our Holy Cross values, our legacy of outstanding achievement, and your support, we grow with hope as we set the tone for our future. Go Mariners! With gratitude and hope,

Dr. Liz Guneratne President P.S. Please help us elevate our profile by sharing our growth and good news with a friend and following us on social media! 4

15TH ANNUAL FUNDING HOPES AND DREAMS The 15th Annual Funding Hopes and Dreams Gala for Tuition Assistance was successful once again at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Newark on Thursday, November 30th. Our student speaker, Fern Mao ’24 and alumni keynote speaker, Terry Eidson ’76 left us in good spirits on how much Moreau Catholic can provide for our current and future Mariners with the generous support from all who attended and those who continually give to the school. Thank you for supporting our Mariner family! Watch Fern’s and Terry’s speeches, and the Bringing Hope - Tuition Assistance video here!

of society. I want to ensure that Moreau continues to provide the tools for students to express themselves and to find what best allows them to become genuinely good members of society. When you were at Moreau Catholic, what was your proudest moment? When I was on student government, I recall that we helped organize a fundraiser for victims of the tsunami that hit Indonesia in 2004. It was great to see the Moreau community come together to show support for victims thousands of miles away. What was your most memorable moment being a Mariner? I’ll never forget being the Spirit Week winner my Sophomore year! I recall that all aspects of our theme, “Microsophs,” were so well executed. Honestly, it wasn’t much of a competition! Did you have a favorite teacher? Left: Jennifer (Alejandro) Rubio ’05, Mick Rubio ’05, Micah Rubio, and their dog Milo

MICK, A MARINER FOREVER We sat down with our new Board of Trustees member and alumnus, Mick Rubio ’05, and asked him what's it like to be Mick and what memories he’d like to share about his time at Moreau Catholic. Interviewed by Dr. Elizabeth Berkes What is your sense of the role of Catholic education and how does Moreau Catholic fit into that? I am a firm believer that academia, science, and knowledge only further reveal the brilliance and complexity of a higher power. I also believe that to be true followers of Christ, we must truly live lives of empathy and compassion. Catholic education should continue to encourage following the philosophies and teachings of Christ and his core tenet to “love thy neighbor.” The Catholic education I experienced at Moreau was one that encouraged diversity, sought genuine understanding of “the other”, and one that sought to ensure that the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart. Moreau Catholic has always embraced diversity and welcomed differences 6

of opinion. My sense is that in today’s society, Catholic education has a unique opportunity to be a moderating and compassionate influence in a rapid paced, divisive, polarized, and socialmedia centric society. In my opinion, Moreau is the standard bearer for this type of well-rounded education. Why are you willing to serve on the Moreau Catholic Board of Trustees? This is an institution that provided the foundation for my academic pursuits. I fostered core values and analytical skills at Moreau that I brought with me into university, law school, and ultimately into my professional career. I want to ensure that Moreau continues to provide excellence in academics, while simultaneously ensuring that students continue to remain empathetic members

Mr. Shelley was a great mentor and advisor in student government, and he remains a good friend to this day. How about a favorite course? A course that still stands out to me today was Mr. Wilder’s America in the ’60s course. He really had a way of really highlighting the importance of that era. After Moreau Catholic, where did you go to school? I went to UC Irvine I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science, Humanities, and Law. I then went to the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law and earned my J.D. in 2012. So, you became a lawyer. Where do you practice? I am currently the Deputy City Attorney for the City of Hayward. I previously was the Senior Associate Attorney for Clausen Miller P.C. and other law firms in both Northern and Southern California, specializing in general civil litigation defense. What do you like to do in your free time? With a 6-month old, spare time is hard to come by. But, when time allows, I like spending time with family and friends. I’ve also recently taken up golf—so I would say, playing golf, but definitely not well!

really made me feel like I could talk to anyone and have conversations about things that I was passionate about and that I believed in. That certainly helped me as an entrepreneur because I have to talk to a lot of potential clients that I have never had a conversation with before.” Although not an actor myself, what she had to say definitely rang true for me. Theatre taught me, too how to work collaboratively and have the confidence to have a conversation with anyone, especially when there is a problem to solve.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS By Heather Radovich ’09 Erika Montgomery ’85 started Three Girls Media, a full-service digital marketing company, back in June of 2005. Eighteen years later, her company is thriving and she leads a team of eight employees (including a four-legged Office Greeter/rescue pup named Phoebe). When I sat down to chat with Erika about her path to becoming an entrepreneur, I was surprised when our conversation turned to her time as an actor here at Moreau on the Teves Theatre stage. As an alum of the MCHS theatre program myself, I was excited to find out that we had this common experience. In her freshman year, Erika was

encouraged by her English teacher to audition for the fall play. Not expecting anything to come of it, she was thrilled when she learned that she had been cast in the lead role. This was a pivotal moment in her journey to become the CEO of a successful company because according to Erika, being on stage sparked a sense of confidence that I noticed from the start of our conversation.

Being a good collaborator is at the core of Erika’s advice for anyone interested in starting their own business. She suggests “surround[ing] yourself with people who are experts in the things that you are not an expert in. When I started Three Girls, I felt I was an expert in marketing, but there’s so much more to running a business than that. You have to do your bookkeeping, taxes, HR, manage employees… and I’m not about those types of things so I hired people that knew what they were doing and could help me in those areas instead of trying to take it all on myself.” Check out Three Girls Media at www.threegirlsmedia.com (QR code) for more information. Did you find your passion during your time at Moreau Catholic High School and then turn it into a career? We want to hear from you! Please submit a Wave or reach out to me directly at hradovich@moreaucatholic.org!

When asked about the transformative experience she had doing shows at Moreau, this is what Erika had to say: “[Theatre] definitely gave me a lot of confidence to talk to people, especially people that I might not know. It just

RETURNING HOME By Heather Radovich ’09 Like many others, I found myself living back with my parents at the start of the pandemic. I don’t need to tell you that it was a crazy time with a lot of uncertainty, but I found comfort in looking at old mementos I had left behind when I moved out of their house. One of those mementos was a diary I started keeping in 6th grade. That diary started with entries about boys, friends, gossip, and drama, but in an entry dated March 2004, I mentioned this place called Moreau Catholic High School. I simply wrote “Wow, what a high school. I’m tellin’ ya. I hope I get to go there.” My four years at Moreau were memorable and transformative. I was very active in the VAPA department, both in theatre and band. I loved being in class but was often running to the attendance office for a late slip from Karen Strawn. I was a bit shy but found my voice when I started working on crew for the fall play and spring musical each year. With encouragement from Arlene Hood, I decided to pursue a career in technical theatre and received my undergraduate degree from Sonoma State University. After that, I received my masters degree in stage management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After graduation, I headed east and started working as a professional stage manager in Boston (that is, until the industry shut down in March 2020).

Back in the Bay Area with nothing to do, I waited for things to return to normal. One day I received a call from Arlene Hood and Patrick Alparone ’00 asking if I would join them in figuring out how to do theatre via Zoom. The kids needed an outlet and a way to stay engaged with theatre despite social distancing. Without hesitation, I said yes. When an opportunity to work in the attendance office became available in February 2021, I decided that I wanted to stay at Moreau for the long haul and officially became a full time employee, splitting time between the VAPA department and attendance office. Instead of getting late slips from Karen Strawn, I was now working alongside her and the incredible main office staff. My love for the Moreau community has grown so much over the last two and a half years of working here. I am constantly reminded of how lucky I was to have been a student here and how lucky I am to be part of the lives of our current students. When the opportunity to work in Advancement as the Alumni and Family Engagement Coordinator came about, I was so thrilled to accept. I now split my time between Advancement and the VAPA department where I work as the production manager. The reason I feel so passionately about connecting with our Mariner alumni and families stems from the impact

graduating from here has had on my life. I would never have found my love for the performing arts without sitting at the light board in Teves Theatre during my freshman year. I would never have met friends who are still part of my life. I would never have learned from amazing teachers who I now get to call colleagues. I would have never found a workplace that feels so much more like a home. I encourage every alumni reading this to consider the impact that being a student at Moreau Catholic has had on their lives. I can guarantee that the things that made MCHS special to you also make it special for a number of current students. My goal is to help connect our alumni community and strengthen the support we are able to offer current students and their families. Alongside Diana (Straggas) DeFrance ’76, I will be working to create a strong alumni presence on social media and at events on campus. I also hope to foster deeper connections between alumni, faculty, and staff, both past and present. If you haven’t already done so, please look for the Moreau Catholic High School Alumni group on Facebook and follow @moreaucatholicalumni on Instagram. We have a lot of exciting opportunities for engagement coming up, and I can’t wait to welcome you back home!

ALUMNI TAILGATE On Friday, October 6th, we welcomed home Mariner alumni from the 1970’s to the 2010’s and every generation in between at our annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate! Many Mariners said they hadn’t been on campus since graduation and were impressed by the facility upgrades especially the newly turfed Festival Area. We look forward to many more opportunities to welcome Alumni home. Stay up to date on upcoming events by using the QR code to the right or visiting: moreaucatholic.org/ alumni

MEMORIALIZING RAY HALL ’71 By Heather Radovich ’09 Though I never had the chance to meet him, I feel like I’ve gotten to know a lot about Ray Hall ’71 through family, friends, and former teammates that have come together to honor him since his passing in June 2023. Before the varsity football game on October 13, a reception was held for family, friends, and those who made donations to the football program in Ray’s honor. That evening, a moment of silence was held before the coin toss and a signed football from the Varsity team was presented to Ray’s wife, Terry, and his siblings George, Kathy, Beth ’74 and Richard. As a member of the first Varsity football team at Moreau and a gifted basketball player standing at 6′7″, it’s obvious that he was known as an athlete. But what became more apparent to me is how much Ray meant to those around him because of his kind heart and encouraging spirit.

Honoring Ray was important to one of his longtime teammates and friends, Greg Palin ’71. Greg reminisced about their time playing together at Moreau and then Chabot College before Ray went to play football at Cal Poly. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1976. Speaking of his lifelong friend, Greg says, “I loved Ray like a brother. He was a man of uncompromising honesty and morality, and his greatest characteristic was his sincere care for all that knew him. He was an extremely hard worker and intensely loyal to his family and friends. Ray always unselfishly celebrated my personal wins with me. I will miss him very much.”

about making a point to reconnect with old friends. No matter what stage of life you’re in, taking time to seek out those who make you feel like your best self is so important. In his memory and honor, I would encourage everyone to reach out to someone who has impacted your life in the way Ray Hall impacted the lives of his family, friends, and teammates.

It is clear that Ray is dearly missed by those closest to him, but something Greg spoke about on the evening of this event really resonated with me and other attendees I spoke with. He talked moreaucatholic.org

A FAMILY AFFAIR By Heather Radovich ’09 There are many current and former Mariners who come from families that have sent students to MCHS for decades. For Mireya Nevel ’22, you could say that her family doesn’t just have a tradition of attending Moreau, but they have created a lasting legacy in these halls. Mireya’s mother Magdalena (Alvarez) Nevel ’90 was the first in their family to graduate from Moreau, followed by Mireya’s aunts Veronica ’93, Noemi ’95, Precila ’00, Vanessa ’01, and Delilah ’06. Mireya’s brother Adan graduated in 2020 and her sister Salma is a current senior. Those who preceded Mireya were involved with sports here on campus, but she found her own path in the VAPA department. When asked about coming from such a big Mariner family, Mireya says that her high school was already picked out for her. “I didn’t mind because I had grown up surrounded by MCHS culture and was so excited to be a part of it. It’s interesting because none of my family who were alums did anything besides sports or Nuestra Gente, so that was what I assumed in my head I’d also be a part of.” That was the case until she was cast as Sophie in the spring musical Mamma Mia! during her freshman year. Four years later, Mireya now attends UCLA where she is pursuing a BFA in Musical Theatre.

Featured on the left page and above are photos from shows Mireya has performed in both at Moreau Catholic and UCLA.

Mireya credits her time at MCHS with preparing her for the rigors of college, especially in a physically and mentally demanding discipline like musical theatre performance. “I had a few tough conversations with my high school teachers about overworking myself and definitely got no sleep in high school. It taught me a lot about time management, prioritizing what’s going to benefit me the most, AND (this is my favorite) saying no.” Speaking from experience, Mireya acknowledges the competitive nature of her chosen path, but has helped cultivate a familial experience with her peers that is rooted in the family she found here on campus. “Being a part of a community at MCHS that was so centered in ‘family’ helped me to carry that mindset with me in my musical theatre program. It’s a small program, I am only one of 9 sophomores, and while it’s competitive, we all support each other like the way I experienced at MCHS.” Right now, Mireya is focusing on honing her skills and trying new things. She was most recently in UCLA’s Act III Ensemble annual production of The Rocky Horror Show. She is looking forward to learning more about acting for the camera and to sharpen her skills as a dancer. Mireya Nevel is a great example for many of our current students who are interested in the arts and plan to make it their career. moreaucatholic.org

Brother Donald’s many gifts made him a candidate for ministry to the members of the Congregation of Holy Cross. He served in formation ministry for the province and as the director of local communities. Twice he was called upon to serve as the Superior of the SouthWest Province. He also served as a Third Assistant in the General Administration of Holy Cross in Rome and as Vicar Provincial and Director of School Sponsorship for the Moreau Province. As a strategic planner, he foresaw the need to build the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence as an assisted-living facility for the Brothers. As the Congregation moves ahead with plans to merge provinces in North America, Brother Donald was assisting in developing new structures to ensure the future sustainability of the Catholic, Holy Cross identity of the schools currently sponsored by the Moreau Province. Always wanting to know what was happening, Brother Donald was attracted to any activity. He would invite passersby into an ongoing conversation. He would use a questioning “Oh?” as a prompt for people to explain themselves to him. He was a voracious reader of

mystery and adventure stories, would conduct classical music from his chair, and seemed to have a devotion to the Seven Sorrows of St. Joseph.

In his last few months, he suffered a hematoma in a minor accident while parking a car. Complications from that injury led to his unexpected death.

Perhaps the only down point in his distinguished career in education came during the year after his first stint as Provincial. Rather than taking a sabbatical, he taught math to middle school children at St. Anthony Cathedral School in Beaumont, Texas. The Sister Principal told him that he did not seem to have much of a maternal instinct. He got over it.

The sudden loss of Brother Donald is a heavy blow to absorb for his family, his Brothers, his Holy Cross family, and the many people in our school communities whose lives he touched. May God grant eternal rest to our beloved Brother Donald.

Brother Donald was truly here for our students. He loved speaking with them, hearing how they were doing and what was important to them. He guided so many Holy Cross leaders with his intelligence and knowledge and compassion and humor. He is truly missed!

2022-2023 ANNUAL REPORT

Please note that this report reflect gifts made between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023.

For nearly 60 years, Moreau Catholic High School has been blessed with donors who believe in and support our daily efforts to be a refuge for students seeking hope; a place where respect is built day after day; a school where students’ hearts and minds are educated to their full potential; and a place where everyone is part of the family. As we celebrate our “Year of Hope” each one of these donors has given us hope that our school will continue to be able to be excellent in academics, athletics, and the arts. Your support allows our students and teachers to have access to state-of-the-art lab equipment and curricular materials, attend retreats, buy instruments, theater sets, and dance costumes, and allows our athletic teams to have new uniforms and the best sports and athletic equipment. Your donations this year paid for safety upgrades throughout the campus, a new festival area, a new roof for our gym, football pads and helmets, and Mock Trial team needs, among many other smaller, but important projects, and your donations paved the way for our next capital campaign for a new Music and Band Center. Our students are learning that they are part of a family that believes in them now and in their potential to transform the world tomorrow. Our current students may not see the faces of our alumni and legacy donors regularly, but they know their love and support through the investments all around them at school. I want to express my deep gratitude to every donor to Moreau Catholic this year. Thank you for being family with us and helping us bring hope every single day.

Dr. Elizabeth Berkes Director of Special Projects & Strategic Initiatives

Brad Faria (A): With the A’s leaving Oakland at the end of the year, a group of guys from the Class of 1972 got together for a Tailgate Party and then attended an Oakland A’s Game. They were up against the NY Yankees and put up a good fight but in the end lost to NY. We all had a great time and planned on going to another game in September. Steve Avolicino (B): John ’77, Sandra ’75, Michael ’73 and I celebrated my father’s (Sam) 103rd birthday with mayor of Danville who delivered him a key to the city. He was featured on multiple Bay Area news stations. What keeps him living so long? Drinking good wine, eating good pasta, and having a beautiful wife (Agnes). Chuck Kennedy (C): After a long career as a software developer and a short career in sales, I moved into teaching. Now I teach Computer Essentials classes to freshmen at Mt Eden High School in Hayward. I’m in my 6th year at Mt Eden and I wish I had started here ten years earlier. I work as a volunteer with the football and basketball programs, operating the clock and scoreboard at home games. Armond Seishas (D) retired in June after a 36-year career in Catholic Education in the Diocese of Oakland. For the past 25 years he served as the principal of St Joachim School Hayward. Lafayette Hatchel: My wife and I finally made the move, left the cold, wet Northwest for sunny Arizona. We have both always been warm/hot weather people so making the move was a no-brainer. Love the desert. Lisa Granzella (E): I have been lucky enough to be a proud parent at Moreau Catholic for many years! Colton graduated in 2009, Grayson in 2014, Tanner in 2017, Logan in 2022 and my daughter Riley is currently a Sophomore! They are all very successful. The faculty’s commitment to the kids and their future is as important as it was when we were there (Class of ’85)—and I’m happy to report that I’m still close with many members of our graduating class!

Theodore Dykzeul (F): I am excited to share the completion of my dissertation, titled “Examining our United States History Textbooks,” where I looked at the degree to which our current history textbooks are Eurocentric. You can find my dissertation on Google Scholar by searching for the title or my full name. This work includes a quantitative analysis of the percentage of pages dedicated to the Asian, Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and White experiences as well as qualitatively the themes that are portrayed throughout the textbooks. In my conclusion, I make recommendations to rewrite the textbooks so they are more equitable in the perspectives included and for local educational agencies to adopt rubrics that include a diversity of voices when adopting new curricula. A big shout out to the amazing and supportive staff at San Francisco State University for their guidance, as well as my wife Rachel for incredible support throughout my writing process! Akemi Maniwa (she/they) has been doing Aikido since before she attended Moreau and this past February was awarded her 4th degree black belt. Andrew McIntire: After getting my Master’s degree in 2019, I decided to ship out and become a Mariner, I worked on deck on a 360 ft cruise ship from 2019-2021 and over the past two years have shipped on a 260 ft supply vessel doing multiple runs between San Diego and Honolulu as well as trips between Hawaii and Guam, Okinawa, Seattle through the Panama Canal to Charleston, and the Southern Atlantic near Uruguay and Argentina. Currently I am in the process of switching from sailing to going back

to school to study law in hopes of becoming a maritime lawyer. Sabrina Lee and Connor Lathrop (H): Connor and I met during our junior year in chemistry class, but the real chemistry started during our last class of the day, Algebra 2. We would talk (when we weren’t supposed to... all the time! We got in trouble a lot, but Mrs. Wiedor never moved us, haha!), make jokes all the time, and share our favorite music. We became the best of friends. Now 7 years later... we’re engaged! Never in a million years did I think I would be marrying my high school sweetheart. From high school to college, to graduate school, and on—Connor has been my rock through it all. I am so very blessed that Moreau brought my soul mate to me, and we are so excited for what the future holds. So remember, sometimes pre-arranged seating charts (and very patient math teachers, thank you, Mrs. Wiedor!) can lead you to your soul mate! Joseph Dominguez: I started graduate school in August 2023 and will graduate in May 2024 with a Master of Science in Accountancy. I’m interning at KPMG, one of the Big 4 accounting firms, and I will start my fulltime position in September 2024. Tyler G. Piedad (I) graduated from San Francisco State University in May 2023 with a B.A. in Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, with an emphasis in Television Production. He now works as a Broadcast Engineer for PAC-12 Networks, specializing in televising NCAA sports at Stanford University and UC Berkeley. In addition to college and professional sports, he has worked live event production for tech companies, music festivals, and live theater.

Megha Sharma: One semester away from finishing my Master of Science in Applied Mathematics and applying to Ph.D. programs right now! Kainoa Lee (J) is currently a Senior Mechanical Engineering major at Seattle Pacific University. Last year stepped into the director position on the university’s Baja SAE team. Leads a multidisciplinary team of over 20 students though the design fabrication and testing of a single seat off road vehicle to complete in international competitions with universities around the world. Last year raised over $15,000 and secured multiple sponsors for the team. Built vehicle in 24 weeks from the ground up and placed 4th in the Rock crawl event, one of only four teams to finish all dynamic event courses. (Out of 80+ teams). Securing the best overall finish in program history. This past summer worked as a Hardware engineering intern with the Mechanical Engineering team at Panasonic Avionics Corporation. Worked with engineers to plan and design structures for commercial inflight entertainment systems as well as satellite connectivity systems. Currently competing in my fourth year of NCAA track and field for SPU. Walked on to the team and earned an athletic scholarship after my second year. 4 year conference scholar athlete, 4 year school scholar athlete. 2 time all-conference team. Good fisherman. Happy to talk more about anything I’m currently doing. Marcus Donchuanchom (K): I received the Newcomer of the Year Award from UCSC from my outstanding freshmen season on the NCAA Men’s volleyball team. This award is given to one man and woman for their outstanding season their rookie year at UCSC.
