GREETINGS FROM MOREHEAD’S DIRECTOR Dear Friends, As 2013 comes to an end, we would like to thank you for your overwhelming support of Morehead over the past year. Without you, we would not be able to create and deliver creative science education programs to people of all ages. Because of the popularity of Morehead Planetarium and Science Center’s 2013 calendar, we have decided to release this updated version for 2014, which will also serve as our annual report for 2012-2013. The calendar continues to provide us with an opportunity to look to our future and to reflect on our past. I hope you enjoy the stories and photos we have chosen to showcase our journey this year. You may even find yourself pictured because you are an integral part of that journey. Morehead continues to serve the state of North Carolina by providing science education activities to children and families regardless of where they live or their ability to pay. I am proud to announce that during 2013 alone, Morehead provided programs and activities in 97 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. The vast majority of those programs were offered for free or at greatly reduced costs because of support from friends and donors like you. 2013 was a tremendously successful year at Morehead, which makes us even more excited about the possibilities for 2014. As you plan ahead for the coming year, I hope Morehead will continue to be a part of your activities. With kind regards,
Todd R. Boyette, Ph.D. Director Morehead Planetarium and Science Center

NORTH CAROLINA SCIENCE FESTIVAL In 2010, Morehead started the first-ever statewide science festival, the North Carolina Science Festival. The festival, designed to celebrate science and science education, had events and activities scheduled around the state. In its third year, the festival drew attendance from nearly 180,000 North Carolinians. From Wilmington to Asheville, the 2013 North Carolina Science Festival inspired communities to hold more than 650 events in 84 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. Nearly 500 event hosts, including 50 colleges and universities, partnered with Morehead to create fun and engaging events for all ages. The 2013 North Carolina Science Festival featured unique signature events. The N.C. Science Summit brought leaders in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) together at N.C. State University for a conference on statewide education initiatives. The Food Network’s Alton Brown captivated sold-out audiences in Charlotte and Durham with the science of cooking. The North Carolina Science Festival also served as a catalyst in communities across the state with the popular Thorp Science Nights at local schools and community centers.

STUDENT EMPLOYEES Morehead has a long history of hiring UNC students to work at the planetarium as show presenters, cashiers, educators, office assistants and other roles. This tradition strengthens Morehead’s workforce with enthusiastic, knowledgable students and helps those students explore their personal career interests. Chassity Bobbitt, a junior public relations major, is in her third year at Morehead, working in the guest relations department. “Morehead gives me the opportunity to see what areas of PR I like, and what I like to do. It’s helped me find out I really enjoy event planning,” Bobbitt said. The sense of community also appeals to Bobbitt: “The people I work with and what I do make this a fantastic experience. Morehead’s community is wonderful.” This sentiment is echoed by Lexi Myers, a senior psychology and philosophy major. “The relationships I’ve made here have been fantastic; after four years I still enjoy coming here,” said Myers.
Clockwise from right: Evan Strother (left) and Lexi Myers (right) at the Jupiter Ball; Chassity Bobbitt (left) and Cait Twiste (right) at Cirque des Sciences. Background: Megan Blanton (left) and Mary Neagle (right) demonstrate an experiment.
But fostering a strong community isn’t the only thing Morehead does for its students. “I’ve learned some important life skills here,” Myers said, “skills that I probably wouldn’t have learned outside of a professional setting like this.”

CIRQUE DES SCIENCES On February 8, 2013, Morehead held its second annual Cirque des Sciences fundraising gala. The evening was filled with “magical” circus and science acts, food from the local vendors and dancing under the stars in the GlaxoSmithKline Fulldome Theater. Guests were treated to some of the area’s finest food and a silent auction that offered packages ranging from a London vacation to a party at a Durham Bulls game. This unique event lit up Chapel Hill with the excitement and fanfare of a five-ring circus. In its second year, Cirque des Sciences raised funds that were used to purchase a new fulldome planetarium show, Dynamic Earth. The next Cirque is scheduled for September 2014. GROSSOLOGY AND YOU FULLDOME SHOW The Morehead production team spent much of 2013 developing a revolutionary fulldome show, which is scheduled to debut in late 2014. Rather than taking you into the universe, Grossology and You takes you through the human body. Morehead based the show on the Grossology® book series by Sylvia Branzei-Velasquez. These books explore all of the “gross” functions of the human body and turn them into teachable moments for kids. This project is made possible through generous support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) SEPA (Science Education Partnership Award) program. NIH has long been a supporter of innovative science education programs.
This presentation and all related materials are based on the book Grossology and You, published by Price Sloan Stern. Grossology® is a registered trademark of Penguin Price Stern Sloan, a division of Penguin Group (USA) Inc.

JUPITER BALL 2012 During the 2012-2013 school year, the Jupiter Ball raised $64,005 which was used to fund need-based scholarships for school groups and to develop science education programs at Morehead. This annual gala event features a champagne reception dinner, dancing and stargazing. The 2012 Jupiter Ball recognized Dr. Betsy Bennett, then director of the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, as its guest of honor. Schools that are eligible to receive Jupiter Scholarships may choose from these educational opportunities:
• A field trip to Morehead, including planetarium show tickets and a transportation stipend.
• A school outreach visit by the DESTINY mobile science laboratory.
• A school outreach visit by the PLANETS portable planetarium.
Schools may choose to participate in more than one opportunity if funding permits. As a result of this event, Jupiter Scholarships benefited 5,686 North Carolina students and additional funds were used for expanding current science programs.

THE LONGEST NIGHT FULLDOME SHOW In fall 2012, Morehead premiered an original fulldome planetarium show, produced in collaboration with Paperhand Puppet Intervention. This one-of-a-kind show told a story of courage, generosity and renewal The production of The Longest Night wove together complex 3D fulldome animation and live-action video of Paperhand’s puppeteers. By using green screen technology, the Morehead production team crafted a story that captured the spirit of the winter season. The show returns to the Morehead schedule again in 2014.

When asked why she works with Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, Christy Shaffer says simply: “I like working with people who have big ideas. There’s no bigger idea than capturing the imagination of people and showing them the universe.” That sentiment is at the heart of the reason Shaffer chooses to support Morehead with such dedication. As an entrepreneur and a biotech veteran, she is no stranger to big ideas. In her current role as managing director of Hatteras Discovery, Shaffer invests in seed and early stage biopharmaceutical companies and projects. She understands the value of preparing the next generations of big thinkers.
Thorp’s leadership of Morehead, Shaffer decided to become a corporate sponsor. “[Thorp] created a feeling of vibrancy that led to building upon the already astounding history of Morehead. It got me excited about supporting Morehead.” When current director Todd Boyette took over from Thorp in 2006, Shaffer again deepened her level of support, joining the Morehead Advisory Board and eventually becoming chair of that committee. She then joined the advisory board of the Morehead-produced North Carolina Science Festival.
Her first interaction with Morehead came in the 1980s, when she would enjoy planetarium shows with her family. Later, attending special events at Morehead and experiencing Holden
Shaffer is a champion for Morehead and its science education programs. She proudly wears her “I love Science” button at every opportunity, prompting conversations that allow her to advocate Morehead’s work and to stress her belief that Morehead is the “standard for outreach education.”

MEET MOREHEAD SUPPORTER ARTHUR DEBERRY Philanthropy and financial security are not in competition with each other. In fact, they can be quite complementary. That’s Arthur DeBerry’s message. Arthur, a long-time resident of Chapel Hill, retired as general agent for Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance and Financial Services in 1994. He continues to serve as a senior agent. He and his wife, Mignon, support Morehead through a planned gift. While in law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Arthur focused his studies on taxation and ways to pass wealth and assets. In the process, he came to believe that the best way to accumulate resources is to find tax shelter investments, and one of the most effective vehicles is through a charitable remainder trust. A charitable remainder trust has two primary characteristics: (1) The trust distributes a fixed percentage of the value of its assets (on an annual or more frequent basis) to a non-charitable beneficiary; and (2) At a specified time (usually the death of the person arranging the trust), the remaining balance of the trust’s assets are distributed to charity. $1-99 CONT’D Monica Sanchez & Brian Sturm Linda Martin Sanders Victoria Sandiford Doreen Sanfelici Winston Morris Sanford Asli Santos Naoya Sasaki David L. Saussy Jr. Matthew Schellenberg Melinda Bart Schlesinger
Arthur chose Morehead as a non-profit organization that will benefit from one of his charitable remainder trusts. “[Morehead] does a great job of educating young people, is an asset to UNC..and is an attractive facility...,” Arthur says. “It is a wonderful thing that Mr. Morehead created, and I hope it will always be a part of UNC.” In his opinion, anyone who has any capital assets with gains should consider charitable remainder trusts. Arthur arranged his first charitable remainder trust in 1989, and he wants people to understand that “tax advantages really work, and individuals and charities come out ahead.” As someone who has great knowledge in this area, Arthur has offered to speak to any of Morehead’s supporters who are interested in learning more about charitable remainder trusts. He also recommends taking advantage of UNC’s Office of Gift Planning as a useful resource.
