VALUE

Admission Requirements

The authentic MSU experience isn’t only about student success, personalized attention or excellent academic programs, it’s also about making that experience affordable.

Affording College At MSU, more than 90 percent of our undergraduate students receive some type of financial aid. The first step is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and have your results sent to MSU. Use the MSU FAFSA code 001976. These results will help us determine if you qualify for need-based financial aid, which includes grants, loans and federal student employment/work study. You should complete the FAFSA as soon as possible beginning Oct. 1 of your senior year of high school. We have helpful financial aid counselors available to avoid any confusion and make this process as stress-free as possible. Make an appointment to talk with an MSU financial aid counselor by emailing finaid@moreheadstate.edu or visiting www.moreheadstate.edu/affording-college.

Scholarships Your application for admission is all we need for you to apply for institutional scholarships, as well as to research and award you additional financial support. • Our merit-based scholarships program encourages some of the best and brightest students to become Eagles. • Last year, we awarded students 596 scholarships, valued at nearly $800,000 annually through the MSU Foundation Inc. MSU also has an expanded scholarship program and we will help you explore additional opportunities throughout your time at MSU. Visit www.moreheadstate.edu/scholarships for more information.

“I like the fact that the class size is great with your professors. You have a lot of time with your teachers one-on-one and they will give you their phone number, so they are willing to work with you any time of the day.” Marissa Wood initially came to Morehead State for its renowned education program (she is majoring in elementary education) but fell in love with the small campus, access to the outdoors and tight-knit community that was very different from where she grew up near Cincinnati, Ohio. She plans on one day doing mission work, using her degree and love for children to teach in impoverished parts of the world.

• Office of First Year Programs www.moreheadstate.edu/firstyear MSU wants your first year of college to be an amazing one. Student Orientation Advising and Registration (SOAR) lets you explore educational opportunities, register for classes early and be prepared for when you arrive in the fall. New Student Days delivers fun and informative activities to get you ready for your first day of classes. Plus, First Year Seminar is a course designed to get you ready for the expectations of academic life. • Eagle Diversity Education Center www.moreheadstate.edu/edec The Eagle Diversity Education Center aims to create a welcoming and inclusive academic environment embracing minority culture while providing a sense of community. Services and programming enhance academic and social connections while fostering positive collaboration across campus. • Tutoring & Learning Center www.moreheadstate.edu/tutoring MSU offers cost-free assistance with your academic challenges through the University’s Tutoring & Learning Center. You can meet with MSU student tutors face-to-face or receive online tutoring 24/7 through Blackboard, whether you are struggling with a specific assignment, a difficult course or need tips on effective studying or test preparation. 11

What is “ADUC”? The Adron Doran University Center (we call it ADUC) is the hub of student life. It’s currently under renovation and will reopen in October 2018. New features include: • An additional 71,000 square feet to the existing 126,000 square feet. • A 100-seat theater for special events. • Expanded space for students to gather and relax or collaborate. • Additional meeting rooms for student activities. • New dining options. • A new ballroom that seats 600 people. • Tiered walks and new landscaping for areas to gather outside. • Picnic tables and benches in the area near Lappin Hall. • A campus pub and lounge.

Life at MSU We know there’s more to the college experience than what happens in the classroom. The campus community promotes a welcoming, comfortable and safe environment – one where you can find your best friends, make incredible memories and learn a lot about yourself. Life at MSU is like having a second home with opportunities to explore new ideas and activities. Not many universities can claim to have their own lake on campus just a short walk away from a nationally ranked Recreation and Wellness Center. Combine that with the charming appeal of the city of Morehead and you’ll be glad you chose to become an Eagle. Our beautiful campus is located in the picturesque city of Morehead, a place big on small town charm that has local restaurants, boutiques, bookstores, coffee shops and other local businesses within walking distance. Take a short drive away from campus and you’ll find various shopping centers, large grocery stores and popular chain restaurants – in other words, pretty much everything you need.

Living on Campus You can be connected to the MSU community while building a sense of independence by living on campus. Whether it’s your classmates, your roommates, your fellow Eagles in your residence hall or your residential advisors (RAs), there’s always the potential for a friendly interaction or a shared experience. We offer a variety of housing styles, from our traditional residence halls and apartments to spacious, suite-style rooms located in our newest residence hall (Andrews Hall). Many of our residence halls are newly renovated and all are alcohol- and tobacco-free with the following features: • Wi-Fi internet access • Vending machines • Cable TV • Cooking areas

12

• Free laundry facilities

You’ve got enough on your plate with class, work and your social life, so leave what goes on your ACTUAL plate to us.  You can use your meal plan to eat at the new Rocky Adkins Dining Commons, featuring all-you-care-to-eat options and exhibition cooking. You can also take a break from studying and grab a bite to eat at the CamdenCarroll Cafe located inside our historic library. If you decide to venture off campus, BeakerBucks are accepted at selected area restaurants. Then, there’s the newly renovated Adron Doran University Center (re-opening Fall 2018), which offers the following popular restaurant chains: • Chick-fil-A • Starbucks • Which Wich Superior Sandwiches • Moe’s Southwest Grill • Steak ‘n Shake

SAFETY MSU fosters an environment dedicated to the safety of our students and is consistently ranked among the safest campuses in the Commonwealth and the nation. The MSU Police Department is available 24 hours a day and offers additional security through the LiveSafe app and Eagle Alerts – safety and weather notifications by text message and email. 13

Getting Involved One of the easiest ways to enhance your social experience at MSU is to become engaged with the campus community – and you’ll be pleasantly surprised with everything being an Eagle has to offer. We have more than 100 student clubs and organizations. Our Campus Activities Board and other student organizations plan annual events like Family Weekend and our Homecoming celebration, along with performances, guest speakers and community service opportunities held throughout the year. Learn more about how you can be involved at MSU by visiting www.moreheadstate.edu/activities.

“Morehead State has so many specific student organizations. I think that’s awesome. It was nice to go to those organizations that you are interested and you can relate to. Making friends and networking and getting to know other people is so much easier.” Asiah Handley wanted to get away from her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, and quickly felt comfortable thanks to MSU’s small campus size and welcoming atmosphere. She also made social connections through her involvement in student organizations like Black Gospel Ensemble and Women’s Virtue. Handley is majoring in business management and while she is contemplating a career in human resources, she one day hopes to be her own boss.

So ... just who or what is Beaker? You might find him at any number of MSU functions … and he’s a real hit with the students. That would be none other than our very enthusiastic mascot, Beaker. Beaker was born into the Eagle family in 1993 and he soon became an integral part of the atmosphere at MSU home sporting events. During games, you can find Beaker chatting with the fans, doing the chicken dance with his buddies or even waiting in line for some delicious hand-dipped ice cream. Away from the court, Beaker is proud to make community appearances at school and civic events.

“I feel like you get to connect with other students more. You get to meet more people. I’ve met people from different countries, people from different religious backgrounds here but the campus is small enough to where you have those connections.” DONOVAN CYRUS’ mother and sister are both MSU alumni and he wanted to go to a school that was both far enough away for a new experience but close enough to his hometown of Ashland, Kentucky. He became a resident advisor (RA) and got involved in Greek life by pledging Sigma Phi Epsilon, which helped him further engage in the campus community and change his career goals. Cyrus is currently a mathematics major with plans for a post-graduate degree in adult and higher education. His goal is to use his degree to work with students at a university full-time.
