A Message from the CEO
I am pleased to provide you with our 2023 impact report. The MSU Foundation is the cornerstone of development at Morehead State University. We strive to advance the University that has provided a light to the mountains and beyond. We aspire to provide opportunities to the NEXT generation of Eagles. 2023 has been a monumental year. This report gives you an inside look at what we have accomplished together and what is NEXT. Our alumni and friends often ask. “How is MSU doing these days?” We can respond confidently that the future of Morehead State University is bright. Many key areas of the University are moving ahead: • • • • • •
Enrollment: An outstanding group of first-time freshmen who arrived on campus this fall with a 3% increase in FTF enrollment. We have over 9,000 students from 106 Kentucky Counties, 42 States and 19 Nations. Academics: MSU is committed to personalized attention. The average class has 16 students and the student to faculty ratio is 14:1. Additionally, 74% of faculty hold terminal degrees. Affordability: We are committed to keeping MSU an affordable option. MSU was ranked the #1 Kentucky Public University for Financial Aid. Safety: MSU is consistently ranked among the safest college campuses in the nation. Athletics: Our 17 intercollegiate athletic teams are competitive, and our athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Giving: In a year when many universities saw a decline in giving, MSU reported an increase in financial support from our alumni and friends. We are so grateful for this ongoing commitment and generosity.
As we look ahead, we are operating in an optimistic, yet conservative way. Recent market performance impacts our endowed funds. However, we are confident in our investment partners, FEG, and appreciate their guidance during volatile market times. Our current fundraising campaign, themed “For the Next” focuses on how we can enhance and improve educational access through scholarship support. The top reason students leave MSU is financial. Often, the gap between a student finishing a semester or even graduating is as little as a thousand dollars, making every contribution for additional scholarship support critical to their success. Your donations are instrumental in helping our students remain on their academic journey. Thank you for believing in our students and investing personally in their education. Annual Scholarship vs. Endowed Scholarship An Annual Scholarship fund works like a checking account. What you put into the account is available to spend. Scholarships are awarded based on dollars contributed in a given year. When the account balance is spent, and no additional gifts are made to replenish the fund, the scholarship is not awarded in that year.
An Endowed Scholarship is more like a savings account. Contributions are made to the principal of the fund. The MSU Foundation then invests the principal, where it earns interest. Scholarship awards are made based on the interest earned in a given year. The principal is never touched – meaning the fund will live on forever! Scholarships

Scholarships at the MSU Foundation are awarded based on a variety of criteria. Preference may be given based on a recipient’s hometown, major, future career goals, financial need and more. But the common denominator is that each scholarship is awarded to a real student pursuing a higher education at MSU. Lucas Sparks – General Scholarship Recipient “Being a Non-Traditional student, this opportunity was something I had envisioned for a while. After graduating high school, then pursuing a career with the US Navy for 6 years, I am hoping to obtain a degree in Agricultural Sciences. Receiving scholarship assistance has given me a second chance. It has allowed me to have access to opportunities that I didn’t know I would have as an adult.”
Brae Ward – Alumni Scholarship Recipient “As someone who had previously visited campus for numerous events, I knew early on that MSU was my home. This was the only campus I toured and applied to. Following in my mother’s footsteps, I knew Morehead would allow me to grow into the best version of myself, in and out of the classroom.”
Jared Vise – Experiential Education Scholarship Recipient “The Experiential Education Scholarship enabled me to receive assistance that provided an extension of the knowledge I gained through Biology Undergraduate Research. The undergraduate research completed at MSU gave me a broad overview of field sampling techniques, but by completing the internship at The Department of Environmental Protection it allowed me to further my knowledge and experience within the field of Biology.”

Answering the Call
For more than 30 years, MSU students have been the voice of the University to alumni across the country. Though the alumni staff meet and talk with hundreds of alumni each year at various events, no single staff member has as many conversations with alumni as the students who work in what is now known as MSU’s Digital Engagement Center. Formerly known as the Call Center, the Digital Engagement Center – fondly referred to as “The DEC” – is a unique employment opportunity for students that builds desirable communication skills and raises critical funding for the University. These students spend their evenings making phone calls, sending text messages or recording personalized videos for alumni and friends of MSU. They share updates on the exciting things happening on campus and give alumni and friends the opportunity to pledge their continued pride in MSU with a gift. The students in the DEC are responsible for tens of thousands of dollars in support each year. “The DEC has been such a fun opportunity for me,” says Madison Teegarden. “At first the job was a little daunting – calling people I don’t know and encouraging them to give back is scary! But it’s been so rewarding. I’ve had amazing conversations with Eagles who were in my shoes 10, 20, 30 years ago. Despite our differences, we have a major thing in common and that’s our love for MSU! Even if someone ultimately doesn’t make a gift, I’ve still made a valuable connection.” The position isn’t only rewarding in terms of seeing the impact a gift can make, but it’s also allowing these students to add desirable skills to their resume. “I know that the work I’m doing is going to be hugely beneficial when I’m searching for a job after graduation,” says Jules Davis. “Being able to list on my resume that I can build relationships and have productive conversations is great, in addition to the fundraising experience. I’m also learning how to have difficult conversations – not everyone wants to give and that’s okay. But I’m building communication skills that make a “no” less awkward for myself and the alum on the other end of the line.” The next time your phone rings – it could be Madison or Jules. Visionary Society Member Spotlights Each year, MSU is the beneficiary of several planned gifts. Here are a few highlights of gifts received during this past year. Gifting Retirement Accounts Ron Martin, (Class of 1972), of Ocala, Florida, named the MSU Foundation as the beneficiary of his retirement account. Upon his passing, MSU received $413,673 to be used for student scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to students who are Legacy students who have a long family connection with MSU as well as students who have been referred by MSU alumni. Gifting a Life Insurance Policy Theodore (Ted) Coakley, (Class of 1972 and 1977), and Janet Sames Coakley, (Class of 1972), both served as previous presidents of the MSU Alumni Association Board of Directors. The couple named MSU as a beneficiary of a Life Insurance policy. Upon their passing, MSU was the recipient of $25,000 that was used to create the Ted and Janet Coakley Memorial Scholarship Fund to support first generation college students with preference given to students from the Southwest Local School District in Harrison, Ohio. Charitable Gift Annuities Frieda Fulmer, mother of MSU Alumni, Linda Fulmer (Class of 1979) established a Charitable Gift Annuity with the MSU Foundation in 2006. The gift annuity, in the amount of $100,000 provided an annual return to Frieda. Upon her passing, the remainder of the gift annuity, nearly $50,000, was used to create the Linda Fulmer Scholarship Endowment to support MSU students who grew up in the foster care system.
