“There is an air of expectancy at Morehouse. It is expected that the student who enters here will do well. It is also expected that once a man bears the insignia of a Morehouse graduate, he will do exceptionally well. We expect nothing less... May you perform so well that when a man is needed for an important job in your field, your work will be so impressive that the committee of selection will be compelled to examine your credentials. 2019 Commencement Program “ O ver the heads of her students, Morehouse holds a crown that she challenges them to grow tall enough to wear.” Dr. Howard Thurman ’23 Educator, Minister, Theologian, Philosopher and Author
Howard Washington Thurman Memorial The Howard Washington Thurman Memorial obelisk on the campus of Morehouse College is a celebration of the process of enlightenment, achieved through the deliberate acquisition of knowledge, understanding, and the slow revelation of cosmic wisdom. The monument rises in the shadow of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, marking the resting place of Thurman, a 1923 graduate and nationally respected theologian, and his wife, Sue Bailey Thurman. Thurman was considered a forerunner in the religious movement of celebrating the unity of all people, and embracing a religious spirituality that was intercultural, interracial, interdenominational, and international.
During its heyday (1580-1200 B.C.), the obelisk was a sun and light symbol, embodying the transcendence immanent in God’s light. The soaring lines of the obelisk were meant to evoke this transcendence and its capstone, often coated in gold-silver alloy, reflected light that could be seen 50 miles away. Light, consciousness, and understanding were synonymous to the ancient priests of the Nile. The obelisk remains a symbol of man’s creativity and wisdom. At Morehouse, the monument serves as a beacon for scholarly pursuits, visionary leadership, compassionate service, and a worldview that inspires positive change.

2020 Commencement Program Academic Heraldry
The history of traditional academic dress can be traced to the 12th century when Oxford University was founded and to the medieval European universities of the 14th century. Although European universities follow varied patterns in cut and color of gown and type of headdress, academic dress at American colleges and universities is fairly standardized. Since the mid 1960s, it has become popular for some in historically African American colleges and universities to wear kente cloth chevrons, panels, hoods and tam trim on presidential, faculty, and student regalia. The traditional academic gown is usually black; the pattern varies with the degrees held. The bachelor’s gown has a simple design, with long, pointed sleeves as its distinguishing mark. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves with the rear cut square and the front featuring a cutaway arc.
The most elaborate academic costume is the doctoral gown, with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars across the sleeves. The velvet is usually black, but it may be a color designating the discipline to which the degree pertains. The hood of the doctoral gown features velvet trimmings, the width of which designates the level of the degree. The color of the hood indicates the major field of study, and its lining identifies the institution that granted the degree. Morehouse’s doctoral gown is maroon with a maroon-and-white hood lining and white chevrons and panels. The colors below are associated with the various academic disciplines.

The Torch of Excellence Soon after Augusta Institute began in 1867, the endeavor to educate Black men came under threat: The Klan promised to burn the church down if the education of Black students continued there. The founders knew that even if they could not continue on in Augusta, their vision could not die. Two men from Atlanta, the Rev. Frank Quarles and James Tate of Friendship Baptist Church, went down and convinced the founders that the school could continue under their protection and watchful care.
Fu, professor of mechanical engineering), recognizing decades of collaboration between the two colleges in the Dual Degree Engineering Program. This Torch was lit in Augusta at Springfield Baptist Church, then carried on a symbolic run through downtown Augusta before it was transported to Atlanta. There, it was relit at the site of Friendship Baptist Church and carried onto Morehouse’s campus to be part of the Commencement exercises. The Torch now remains a part of Commencement. Every year, the Torch leads the academic procession onto the green, representing the light of knowledge that is passed on from teachers to students to future generations. As the Torch of Excellence comes to the stage, the light is extinguished. It is now the responsibility of this class to take that light of excellence out into the world.
As part of the 2017 Sesquicentennial celebrations, Morehouse College recognized the heroic efforts of those who strove to ensure the light of excellence that is Morehouse never went out. Envisioned by Dr. Keith Hollingsworth, a Torch of Excellence was created. The Torch was a special engineering collaboration between Morehouse College (led by Willie Rockward, chair of the Department of Physics) and Georgia Tech (led by Katherine Page 7

johnnetta betsch cole, ph.d. AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST AND EDUCATOR FIRST FEMALE AMERICAN PRESIDENT OF SPELMAN COLLEGE Johnnetta Betsch Cole, Ph.D., is a noted author, anthropologist, and visionary leader in higher education who in 1987 became the first African American woman named as president of Spelman College. Under Cole’s 10-year administration, Spelman, the oldest African American women’s college in the United States, gained national prominence among liberal arts institutions for its academic offerings and focus on the fine arts. Cole attracted top faculty and launched new programs as part of her commitment to making the school a center for scholarship about African American women. Calling herself “Sister President,” Cole, the seventh president of Spelman, became known as a strong national advocate for the liberal arts curriculum in a changing society. Her early career as a professor and an administrator at the University of California, Los Angeles, Washington State University at Pullman, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and Hunter College had prepared her for the transformative work that she did at Spelman. Cole retired as president emerita of Spelman in 1997. A year later in 1998, Cole returned to teaching as a Presidential Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Women’s Studies, and African American Studies at Emory University. She remained at Emory for three years and tried retirement again in 2001. But her respite was brief. She went back to work a year later to lead Bennett College of North Carolina, another historically black college for women. She served as president from 2002 to 2007. During Cole’s administration at Bennett, she chaired the Johnnetta B. Cole Global Diversity & Inclusion Institute and also served as chair of the Board of Trustees of the United Way of America, a nationwide network of charitable and community organizations from 2004 to 2006. After retiring from Bennett, Cole later went on to serve as director of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art from 2009 to 2017. Among Cole’s early influences in education were her mother, who taught college English, pioneering educator Mary MacLeod Bethune, and writer Arna Bontemps, who was the school librarian at Fisk University when Cole matriculated at age 15. Cole left Fisk to study sociology at Oberlin College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology. She also holds a doctorate in anthropology from Northwestern University. Cole is an accomplished author and an expert on issues of race, gender, and class in the Pan-African world. In addition to many scholarly articles and a regular column in McCall’s magazine, she wrote Anthropology for the Eighties: Introductory Readings (1982), All American Women: Lines That Divide, Ties That Bind (1986), Anthropology for the Nineties (1988), Conversations: Straight Talk with America’s Sister President (1993), and Dream the Boldest Dreams: And Other Lessons of Life (1997).

mack roach iii ph.d. PROFESSOR AND CHAIRMAN, DEPARTMENT OF RADIATION AND UROLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO Dr. Mack Roach III, a 1975 graduate of Morehouse College, is a professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco. A cancer research innovator, Roach is recognized nationally as an expert on the treatment of localized prostate cancer. Roach’s research methods led him to pioneer the use of endorectal Magnetic Spectroscopy imaging as a means of monitoring prostate cancer outcomes, making him a leader in his field. He then helped to establish the American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness Criteria Guidelines for defining how men with prostate cancer should be treated with radiotherapy from 1996 through 2006. He also served on the National Cancer Institute’s Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy Working Group describing criteria for the use of this new technology. He currently serves on the National Comprehensive Cancer Guidelines Committee for Prostate Cancer. In 2013, Roach was appointed by President Barack Obama to a six-year term on the National Cancer Advisory Board so that he could share his expertise with the nation’s top scientists and physicians. The advisory board helps to define the cancer research agenda for the country. Roach has also served on numerous editorial boards. He is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and the American Society for Radiation Oncology, and has co-authored more than 400 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and editorials. Roach has led two large Phase III Trials evaluating the role of whole-pelvic radiation in men with high risk prostate cancer. The studies, when completed in total, will have enrolled 4,000 men. A major research interest of his work has been to reduce the risk of erectile dysfunction associated with the treatment of prostate cancer by radiation. He is currently also very active in the efforts to develop the capacity to harness heavy charged particles for the treatment of radiation resistant cancers. Roach was born in the east Texas town of Palestine. He grew up in northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area after relocating there with his parents and four siblings. Roach entered Morehouse College in Atlanta after high school and completed his undergraduate studies in physics, finishing with honors in 1975. He later attended medical school at Stanford University in California, graduating in 1979. A community servant, Roach is active in several organizations and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Cancer Society Career Development Award and the UCSF Health Net Wellness Award. He was also voted as one of the Best Doctors in the Bay Area (1997-1998) and Best Doctors in America in (1996-1997, 2003, and 2005). In addition, Roach received the Health and Wellness Award from 100 Black Men of the Bay Area (1999). A scholar in radiation and oncology, Roach has traveled the world lecturing on the intricacies of prostate cancer treatment from a radiotherapeutic perspective, both technical and clinical, including a United Nations meeting on prostate cancer in Vienna, Austria.

Important Note: Because printing of this document requires that lists of names be submitted to the external printing company a number of weeks prior to Commencement, the graduation list reflects only the names of those candidates who officially applied for graduation by the stipulated deadline. Therefore, it is possible that some candidates who completed all degree requirements are not listed on the program and that some candidates whose names are listed have not completed all degree requirements. The College grants degrees only to those persons who have satisfied all academic requirements and all financial obligations.

AGE: 23
MAJOR: Psychology
MAJOR: Chemistry
HOMETOWN: Clinton, Maryland by way of Lusaka, Zambia
MINOR: Biology HOMETOWN: Alpharetta, Georgia
Golden Daka of Clinton, Maryland, by way of Lusaka, Gambia, is the valedictorian of the Class of 2020. He earned his psychology degree in June after maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA since he arrived at Morehouse with a oneway bus ticket, a suitcase, and no way to pay for his full tuition. Determined to graduate as a Morehouse Man, the transfer student talked his way into a UNCF scholarship during New Student Orientation in 2017. The financial aid helped to cover a large portion of his studies. After receiving the scholarship, Daka made a promise to himself and those who invested in him. He said that he would maintain straight-A’s through graduation. He accomplished his goal. Daka is currently working with the Office of the Governor of Illinois as a recipient of the prestigious James H. Dunn Jr. Memorial Fellowship governmental honors program. He will serve as a fellow for a year and then enroll in law school.
Georgia native Huiet V. Joseph IV is salutatorian of the Class of 2020. Joseph, a chemistry major from Alpharetta, earned a 3.99 GPA following the completion of his academic program in June. The Morehouse scholar is pursuing a career as an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. Joseph is the second, consecutive top-ranking Morehouse scholar to attend medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He joined one of last year’s valedictorians, Jarvis Mays, at the medical school. Maintaining straight-A’s at Morehouse was a test of mettle for Joseph who survived tough professors, demanding workloads, labs, and project schedules, as well as the challenges of online learning during a global pandemic. Joseph said he was focused on academic excellence: “If you can survive a huge transition in your type of learning, you can survive anything,” he said. “It’s another way to prepare you for the world.” MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS Marching Band, Chemistry Club, Health Careers Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-med Honors Society, Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, National Society of Leadership and Success, ARCS Scholar, and Stamps Scholar.
MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS Phi Beta Kappa, LYTEhouse, Morehouse College SGA NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY I would say, Winfield Ward Murray and the political science program. I was extremely blessed to be challenged in rigorous coursework in the political science department in courses such as Moot Court and African Politics. Both courses gave me the range I needed to think creatively and assertively about topics and issues that are integral to my passions and values.
NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY Marching Band was the most integral part of my college career not because it aided any class in particular but because it rounded me out as an individual. At Morehouse, academic success is expected of everyone and it really is what you do outside classes that comes to define you.
WHY YOU CHOSE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE Morehouse presented the best combination of brotherhood and achievement. It offers an environment of nurturing that at the same time pushes you to be the best version of yourself. SENIOR AWARDS RECEIVED Valedictorian, Class of 2020, Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Chapter of Georgia, 2019-20 Top Senior Award - Psychology Major, 2019-20 Harry and Sophie Rosenman Award in Psychology, Psychology Departmental Honors INTERNSHIPS Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Non-Resident Research Assistant; Harvard/NYU TRIALS program; The Law Office of William C. Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Lift ev’ry voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty. Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies; Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us; Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.
Dear Old Morehouse Dear old Morehouse, dear old Morehouse, We have pledged our lives to thee; And we’ll ever, yea forever, Give ourselves in loyalty. True forever, true forever, To old Morehouse may we be; So to bind each son the other Into ties more brotherly. Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, Make us steadfast, honest, true To old Morehouse and her ideals And in all things that we do. J.O.B. Moseley ’29
