137th Commencement

Sunday, the Sixteenth Day of May Two Thousand Twenty-One

nine o’clock in the morning

“There is an air of expectancy at Morehouse. It is expected that the student who enters here will do well. It is also expected that once a man bears the insignia of a Morehouse graduate, he will do exceptionally well. We expect nothing less. May you perform so well that when a man is needed for an important job in your field, your work will be so impressive that the committee of selection will be compelled to examine your credentials. May you forever stand for something noble and high. Let no man dismiss you with a wave of the hand or shrug of the shoulder...” CHARGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF ’61

2019 Commencement Program “ O ver the heads of her students, Morehouse holds a crown that she challenges them to grow tall enough to wear.” Dr. Howard Thurman ’23 Educator, Minister, Theologian, Philosopher and Author

Howard Washington Thurman Memorial The Howard Washington Thurman Memorial obelisk on the campus of Morehouse College is a celebration of the process of enlightenment, achieved through the deliberate acquisition of knowledge, understanding, and the slow revelation of cosmic wisdom. The monument rises in the shadow of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, marking the resting place of Thurman, a 1923 graduate and nationally respected theologian who was considered a forerunner in the religious movement of celebrating the unity of all people, and embracing a religious spirituality that was intercultural, interracial, interdenominational, and international.

During its heyday (1580-1200 B.C.), the obelisk was a sun and light symbol, embodying the transcendence immanent in God’s light. The soaring lines of the obelisk were meant to evoke this transcendence and its capstone, often coated in gold-silver alloy, reflected light that could be seen 50 miles away. Light, consciousness, and understanding were synonymous to the ancient priests of the Nile. The obelisk remains a symbol of man’s creativity and wisdom. At Morehouse, the monument serves as a beacon for scholarly pursuits, visionary leadership, compassionate service, and a worldview that inspires positive change.

2021 Commencement Program Academic Heraldry

The history of traditional academic dress can be traced to the 12th century, when Oxford University was founded, and to the medieval European universities of the 14th century. Although European universities follow varied patterns in cut and color of gown and type of headdress, academic dress at American colleges and universities is fairly standardized. Since the mid 1960s, it has become popular for some in historically African American colleges and universities to wear kente cloth chevrons, panels, hoods and tam trim on presidential, faculty, and student regalia. The traditional academic gown is usually black; the pattern varies with the degrees held. The bachelor’s gown has a simple design, with long, pointed sleeves as its distinguishing mark. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves with the rear cut square and the front featuring a cutaway arc.

The most elaborate academic costume is the doctoral gown, with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars across the sleeves. The velvet is usually black, but it may be a color designating the discipline to which the degree pertains. The hood of the doctoral gown features velvet trimmings, the width of which designates the level of the degree. The color of the hood indicates the major field of study, and its lining identifies the institution that granted the degree. Morehouse’s doctoral gown is maroon with a maroon-and-white hood lining and white chevrons and panels. The colors below are associated with the various academic disciplines.

The Torch of Excellence Soon after Augusta Institute was founded in 1867, the endeavor to educate Black men came under threat: The Klan promised to burn the church down if educating Black men continued there. The founders knew that even if they could not continue on in Augusta, their vision could not die. Two men from Atlanta, the Rev. Frank Quarles and James Tate of Friendship Baptist Church, went down and convinced the founders that the school could continue under their protection and watchful care.

(led by Katherine Fu, Ph.D, assistant professor of mechanical engineering), recognizing decades of collaboration between the two colleges in the Dual Degree Engineering Program. This Torch was lit in Augusta at Springfield Baptist Church, and then carried on a symbolic run through downtown Augusta before it was transported to Atlanta. There, it was relit at the site of Friendship Baptist Church and carried onto Morehouse’s campus to be part of the Commencement exercises. The Torch now remains a part of Commencement. Every year, the Torch leads the academic procession onto the green, representing the light of knowledge that is passed on from teachers to students to future generations. As the Torch of Excellence comes to the stage, the light is extinguished. It is now the responsibility of this class to take that light of excellence out into the world.

As part of the 2017 Sesquicentennial celebrations, Morehouse College recognized the heroic efforts of those who strove to ensure the light of excellence that is Morehouse never went out. Envisioned by Keith Hollingsworth, Ph.D., a Torch of Excellence was created. The Torch was a special engineering collaboration between Morehouse College (led by Willie Rockward, Ph.D., then chair of the Department of Physics) and Georgia Tech

DOCTOR OF LAWS

Bryan A. Stevenson Bryan Stevenson is a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer, best-selling author of the book “Just Mercy,” and founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), a human rights organization in Montgomery, Alabama. Under Stevenson’s leadership, EJI, founded in 1989, has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill, and aiding children prosecuted as adults. The nonprofit is committed to challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. Stevenson has argued and won multiple cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. These include cases resulting in a 2019 ruling protecting condemned prisoners who suffer from dementia and a landmark 2012 ruling that banned mandatory life-imprisonment-without-parole sentences for children ages 17 or younger. In addition, Stevenson and his staff have won reversals, relief, or release from prison for more than 135 wrongly condemned prisoners on death row, and have won relief for hundreds of others wrongly convicted or unfairly sentenced. Stevenson has also initiated major anti-poverty and anti-discrimination efforts that challenge inequality in America. He led, for example, the creation of two highly acclaimed cultural sites that opened in Montgomery in 2018: The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, and The National Memorial for Peace and Justice. These new national landmark institutions chronicle the legacy of slavery, lynching, and racial segregation as well as the connection to mass incarceration and contemporary issues of racial bias. A graduate of the Harvard Law School and Harvard Kennedy School, Stevenson is a professor of law at the New York University (NYU) School of Law. He has received more than 40 honorary doctoral degrees from institutions including Harvard, Yale University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Oxford University. Stevenson’s work has won him numerous awards, including: the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship (unofficially known as the Genius Grant); the American Bar Association (ABA) Medal, the group’s highest honor; the National Medal of Liberty from the American Civil Liberties Union; Public Interest Lawyer of the Year recognition by the National Association of Public Interest Lawyers; and the Olaf Palme Prize for outstanding achievement in international human rights. Stevenson is also a recipient of the Alabama State Bar Commissioners’ Award, the 2003 SALT Human Rights Award from the Society of American Law Teachers, the 2004 Award for Courageous Advocacy from the American College of Trial Lawyers, and the Lawyer for the People Award from the National Lawyers Guild. In 2006, NYU presented Stevenson with its Distinguished Teaching Award. His other awards include: the Gruber Justice Prize; the NAACP William Robert Ming Advocacy Award; the National Legal Aid & Defender Association Lifetime Achievement Award; the Ford Foundation Visionaries Award; the Roosevelt Institute’s Freedom from Fear Award; the American Psychiatric Association’s Chester M. Pierce Human Rights Award; the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute’s Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award; and the Smithsonian Magazine American Ingenuity Award in Social Progress. Stevenson was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2014, and that same year he won the Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize. In 2015, he was named to the Time 100 Most Influential People list, and in 2016, he received the ABA’s Thurgood Marshall Award. Stevenson was named to Fortune’s “The World’s 50 Greatest Leaders” list in both 2016 and 2017. He also received the Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize from the King Center in Atlanta in 2018.

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS

Nikole Sheri Hannah-Jones Nikole Hannah-Jones is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, one of the creators of The 1619 Project, and a staff writer at The New York Times Magazine. She has spent her career investigating racial inequality and injustice, and her reporting has earned her the MacArthur Fellowship (known as the Genius grant), a Peabody Award, two George Polk Awards, and the National Magazine Award— which she won three times. Hannah-Jones also earned the John Chancellor Award for Distinguished Journalism and was named Journalist of the Year by both the National Association of Black Journalists and the Newswomen’s Club of New York. She was inducted into the Society of American Historians in 2020 and inducted into the NC Media & Journalism Hall of Fame in 2021. Hannah-Jones also serves as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 2016, Hannah-Jones co-founded the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting, which seeks to increase the number of reporters and editors of color. Prior to joining The New York Times, Nikole worked as an investigative reporter at ProPublica in New York City, where she spent three years chronicling the way official policy created and maintains segregation in housing and schools. Before that, she reported for the largest daily newspaper in the Pacific Northwest, The Oregonian in Portland, Ore., where she covered numerous beats including demographics, the census, and county government. She started her journalism career covering the majority-Black Durham Public Schools for The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C. During her three years there, she wrote extensively on issues of race, class, school resegregation, and equity. A native Iowan, Hannah-Jones became interested in journalism as a teen when she was bused to high school. She was dropped off into a setting in which 20% of the students were Black, yet she had only one Black male teacher. He taught Black studies, and when Hannah-Jones complained that the school newspaper never wrote about its Black students, he challenged her to change that by joining its staff. She did so, secured a column named “From the African Perspective,” and for her first investigation researched whether Jesus was Black. “I got hooked at that point because my [Black] classmates would read my articles, and it meant a lot to my classmates to see themselves reflected in the paper,” she said. “And I just understood, even at a young age, how important it is to have some control over the narrative of your people.” Her heroes are reporters, such as Ida B. Wells, Ethel Payne, Simeon Booker and acclaimed civil rights reporter and editor Claude Sitton. She earned a Master of Arts degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history and African American studies from the University of Notre Dame.

Presidential Award of Distinction

Maurice Washington

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT SERVICES AND DEAN OF THE COLLEGE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE Maurice Washington, vice president of student services and dean of the college at Morehouse College, was a proven educator with extensive professional higher education experience in public, private, and large urban institutions. He was born April 14, 1962, in New York City, New York, the son of Lucille Wilder Washington and the late Paul Washington Sr. He was educated in the New York City Public Schools, where he graduated as a valedictorian from Brooklyn Technical High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Drew University and his Master of Arts from Teachers College, Columbia University. For more than 30 years, Dean Washington was committed to helping students successfully transition into and through college. He began his career working at his alma matter, Drew University, where he served first as a resident director and then assistant director of student activities. He then found himself serving the students at New Jersey City State College as the assistant director of student services for residence life and housing. Then, in 1990, Dean Washington made a pivotal move to Bloomfield College, where he served for nearly a decade as the associate dean of student affairs and director of residence life. It was at Bloomfield College that Washington honed and refined his approach to programmatic student development and support. New York University was Dean Washington’s next stop, where he and his beloved staff provided leadership and support to more than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Dean Washington is credited with leading his team through one of this country’s most harrowing events, the 9/11 attacks. His cool head and strategic thinking resulted in the real-time implementation of a boots-on-the-ground evacuation and triage plan, which resulted in no student or faculty lives being lost. After joining Morehouse College in 2007, Dean Washington served in a variety of positions. Throughout a campus career spanning more than 13 years, he served as director of housing and residential life, associate dean of student services, associate vice president for student affairs, and vice president for student services. Dean Washington was always supportive of his friends, always willing to assist, and always exhibiting a genuine concern for the well-being of others. He was a 2019 inductee into the Morehouse College Martin Luther King Jr. College of Ministers and Laity, and while he was not a graduate of Morehouse College, Dean Washington embodied the traits, characteristics, and the mystique associated with being a Morehouse Man. Dean Washington met his future wife, Carla DeBose, at a professional development workshop she was conducting at Bloomfield University in 1995. They were married on Jan. 1, 2000, and had one son, Jordan Maurice Washington.

Presidential Award of Service

Billye Suber Aaron TRUSTEE, NONPROFIT EXECUTIVE, PHILANTHROPIST, TV PERSONALITY, AND CIVIC LEADER

Billye Jewel Suber Aaron has been committed to education during her entire career. The East Texas native, who holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Texas College and a master’s degree in English from Atlanta University, has taught in Atlanta Public Schools, as well as at Spelman College, Morehouse College, Morris Brown College, and South Carolina State University. In addition to teaching, Aaron has been a prolific fundraiser and dedicated member of the Board of Trustees at Morehouse College, where she served on the board’s development and student services committees, helped spearhead the Board Opportunity Fund, and made transformational gifts in support of athletics, the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel Restoration, the “A Candle in the Dark” Gala, and others. Aaron was inducted into the Benjamin E. Mays Society of the Leadership Circle, which recognizes cumulative lifetime giving at or above $1 million. And in 2015, her portrait was unveiled and displayed in the Chapel Hall of Honor. In 1994, Aaron co-founded, with her husband, baseball legend Hank Aaron, the Hank Aaron Chasing The Dream Foundation, a philanthropic trust created to help children with limited opportunities and financial barriers pursue their passions. After reaching their original goal of assisting 755 young scholars, the Aarons initiated partnerships with Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, as well as U.S. military bases worldwide. The foundation also provided scholarships to students at Morehouse, College, Texas College, Fisk University, Bethune-Cookman University, Dillard University, Spelman College, Tuskegee University, Xavier University, Mount Mary University, Clark Atlanta University, Talladega College, and the University of Wisconsin, among other institutions. Currently, Morehouse awards annual scholarships totaling $250,000 to 10 Hank Aaron Chasing The Dream Scholars. Prior to helping thousands of deserving young people, Aaron chased her own dreams, becoming the first African American woman in the Southeast to co-host a daily talk show—WSB-TV’s “Today in Georgia” in 1968. On that show and a second show, “Billye,” created for her later on WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee, Aaron interviewed national and international leaders, dignitaries, and celebrities, including Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Sidney Poitier, and Pearl Bailey. Seven years later, the trailblazing TV host began working as a development director for the Atlanta branch of the UNCF. Over 14 years, Aaron co-hosted the annual telethon, co-founded the Mayor’s MASKED Ball, and became the second woman in UNCF history to serve as vice president of the southern region. She went on to support UNCF through the establishment of the $1 million Billye Suber Aaron Legacy Scholarship. Aaron has also been active for many years with the NAACP. Billye Aaron continues to be a devoted and passionate advocate for educational opportunities for young people and has been recognized repeatedly for her selfless devotion to community service and philanthropy. She has also received a host of prestigious honors, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Salute to Greatness Award, the Greater Atlanta YWCA Woman of Achievement Award, and the naming of the Billye Suber Aaron Pavilion at Morehouse School of Medicine in her honor. She received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Morehouse in 2011. Aaron was widowed by her first husband, Morehouse philosophy professor and Friendship Baptist Church Associate Pastor Dr. Samuel Williams, in 1970. She married Baseball Hall of Famer Henry Aaron in 1973, and the two were happily married until his passing on Jan. 22, 2021. She is the mother of Ceci Haydel, and grandmother of Emily Jewel and Victor Aaron Haydel.

Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Lift ev’ry voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty. Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies; Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us; Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.

Dear Old Morehouse Dear old Morehouse, dear old Morehouse, We have pledged our lives to thee; And we’ll ever, yea forever, Give ourselves in loyalty. True forever, true forever To old Morehouse may we be; So to bind each son the other Into ties more brotherly. Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, Make us steadfast, honest, true To old Morehouse and her ideals And in all things that we do. J.O.B. Moseley ’29

HOMETOWN: Gary, Ind.

Kymani Joachim’s first name is African, meaning “adventurous traveler”—an apt description of the California native who had rarely ventured out of his state while growing up , but enrolled at Morehouse, across the country, for college. Joachim lived in diverse or predominantly white neighborhoods in childhood, and wanted to experience something else in college. “I’ve always wanted a brotherhood,” he said. And he found it at Morehouse. “This Afrocentric space builds a sense of relatability and comfortability within the community,” he explained, “so that one may grow and prosper without hesitation.” Joachim focused on his studies at Morehouse and completed internships at home in summer, but he also found time for service work. He volunteered as a trainer for the Maroon Tigers football team, completed a social service mission trip to Costa Rica, and worked with several campus organizations like Achieve M.O.O.R.E., LYTEhouse, and CHILL Peer Counselors. After graduation, Joachim will continue his studies at the University of Southern California, where he plans to earn a master of science degree in biokinesiology and physical therapy, with an emphasis on sports medicine. Later, he plans to obtain his doctorate in physical therapy. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS Phi Beta Kappa Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society, James P. Haines Society, National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, National Society of Leadership and Success, Redefine U Health Organization, LYTEhouse youth mentoring, Achieve M.O.O.R.E. (community-based social support group), and CHILL Peer Counselors.

Nanya R. El came to Morehouse at the recommendation of a friend, but he stayed for himself, after discovering the outstanding support system and brotherhood that Morehouse offered. “The support system at Morehouse is unmatched,” he said, “from fellow students, professors, and staff.” El was the valedictorian of his high school class in Gary, Indiana, but didn’t expect to repeat that success until the end of sophomore year at Morehouse when he realized he had a 4.0 GPA. “I just made sure anything that I had to do, I got done. I stayed on top of it.” In addition to handling his own academic demands, El worked at the campus Career Leadership Institute, and served as a residential advisor and PSEP mentor. He is also a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society and the Sigma Alpha Pi chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success. El knew he wanted to major in business when he entered Morehouse. He graduates with a 4.0 GPA and a degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing. He hopes to work in investment banking, and plans to attend graduate school to earn an MBA. Amari Parris was always interested in sports, and played sports on into his high school years, but at Morehouse his interest took a turn to sports management. The Silver Spring, Maryland, native is now graduating from Morehouse with a 3.9 GPA and a degree in kinesiology, sports studies, and physical education. Soon, Parris will begin a master’s program in sports management at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies. And after earning his master’s degree, Parris, who has a passion for data-driven decision-making, intends to “to build a career in business intelligence and intercollegiate administration, with a long-term goal of becoming an intercollegiate athletic director.” Parris did not work toward becoming class salutatorian. His freshman goal, in fact, was to become a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society as a junior. But along the way, by being conscious of his time and “blessed with professors and people in my life who cared about me,” he succeeded. Parris gives some credit to his mother, who wanted him to go to Morehouse, and even more to the College itself. “From the moment I stepped on campus I felt the tradition and expectation of success, and people striving toward it,” he said. “That spoke to me.”

After graduation, Daka worked with the Office of the Governor of Illinois as a recipient of the Dunn Scholarship. He is now working in New Jersey as a business analyst with McKinsey and Company, where he advises clients on best practices for a wide range or organizational problems.

NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY I would say, Winfield Ward Murray and the political science program. I was extremely blessed to be challenged with rigorous coursework in the political science department, such as Moot Court and African Politics. Both courses gave me the range I needed to think creatively and assertively about topics and issues that are integral to my passions and values.

WHY YOU CHOSE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE I chose Morehouse for its rich legacy of producing successful Black men. I knew that I would be surrounded by a community of bright and high-achieving scholars whom I would have the privilege of knowing and growing with.

PLANS AFTER GRADUATION I will pursue a master’s degree in sports management at Columbia University School of Professional Studies. I intend to build a career in business intelligence and intercollegiate administration, with a long-term goal of becoming an intercollegiate athletic director.

During his senior year, Daka was given the Top Ranking Senior in Psychology Major Award, the Harry and Sophie Rosenman Award in Psychology, departmental honors, and the prestigious James Dunn Memorial Scholarship.

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS Phi Beta Kappa, LYTEhouse, Student Government Association

NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY The Howard Thurman Honors Program was the most integral to my success. The faculty and course work I encountered as a member of the program challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and reimagine what was possible for myself. The program provided the framework for me to think critically and creatively about my vision, brand, and purpose.

INTERNSHIPS BRUSH Summer Research Program; Laurel Radiology – clinical assistant, Endeavor/IMG-Brand licensing intern; SponsorUnited – sponsorship scout; HBSE Virtual Academy; AT&T extern; Under Armour Career Combine; Culture in Sports – writer

After receiving the scholarship, Daka made a promise to himself and those who invested in him that he would maintain straight-A’s through graduation. He accomplished his goal.

Following McKinsey & Company, he plans to attend law school and business school focusing on social sector and economic development work.

SENIOR AWARDS RECEIVED Salutatorian, Summa Cum Laude, Kinesiology Departmental Honors

Golden Daka of Clinton, Maryland, by way of Lusaka, Zambia, earned his psychology degree in 2020 after maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. Daka arrived at Morehouse with a one-way bus ticket, a suitcase, and no way to pay for his full tuition. Determined to graduate as a Morehouse Man, however, the transfer student talked his way into a UNCF scholarship during New Student Orientation in 2017. The financial aid helped to cover a large portion of his studies.

WHY YOU CHOSE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE Morehouse presented the best combination of brotherhood and achievement. It offers a nurturing environment that simultaneously pushes you to be the best version of yourself. SENIOR AWARDS RECEIVED Class of 2020 Valedictorian; Summa Cum Laude; Phi Beta Kappa, Delta Chapter of Georgia; 2019-20 Top Senior Award – Psychology Major; 2019-20 Harry and Sophie Rosenman Award in Psychology; Psychology Departmental Honors INTERNSHIPS Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, non-resident research assistant; Harvard/NYU TRIALS program; The Law Office of William C.
