“There is an air of expectancy at Morehouse. It is expected that the student who enters here will do well. It is also expected that once a man bears the insignia of a Morehouse graduate, he will do exceptionally well. We expect nothing less. May you perform so well that when a man is needed for an important job in your field, your work will be so impressive that the committee of selection will be compelled to examine your credentials. May you forever stand for something noble and high. Let no man dismiss you with a wave of the hand or shrug of the shoulder...” CHARGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF ’61

2019 Commencement Program “ O ver the heads of her students, Morehouse holds a crown that she challenges them to grow tall enough to wear.” Dr. Howard Thurman ’23 Educator, Minister, Theologian, Philosopher and Author
Howard Washington Thurman Memorial The Howard Washington Thurman Memorial obelisk on the campus of Morehouse College is a celebration of the process of enlightenment, achieved through the deliberate acquisition of knowledge, understanding, and the slow revelation of cosmic wisdom. The monument rises in the shadow of the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel, marking the resting place of Thurman, a 1923 graduate and nationally respected theologian who was considered a forerunner in the religious movement of celebrating the unity of all people, and embracing a religious spirituality that was intercultural, interracial, interdenominational, and international.
During its heyday (1580-1200 B.C.), the obelisk was a sun and light symbol, embodying the transcendence immanent in God’s light. The soaring lines of the obelisk were meant to evoke this transcendence and its capstone, often coated in gold-silver alloy, reflected light that could be seen 50 miles away. Light, consciousness, and understanding were synonymous to the ancient priests of the Nile. The obelisk remains a symbol of man’s creativity and wisdom. At Morehouse, the monument serves as a beacon for scholarly pursuits, visionary leadership, compassionate service, and a worldview that inspires positive change.

2022 Commencement Program Academic Heraldry
The history of traditional academic dress can be traced to the 12th century, when Oxford University was founded, and to the medieval European universities of the 14th century. Although European universities follow varied patterns in cut and color of gown and type of headdress, academic dress at American colleges and universities is fairly standardized. Since the mid 1960s, it has become popular for some in historically African American colleges and universities to wear kente cloth chevrons, panels, hoods and tam trim on presidential, faculty, and student regalia. The traditional academic gown is usually black; the pattern varies with the degrees held. The bachelor’s gown has a simple design, with long, pointed sleeves as its distinguishing mark. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves with the rear cut square and the front featuring a cutaway arc.
The most elaborate academic costume is the doctoral gown, with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars across the sleeves. The velvet is usually black, but it may be a color designating the discipline to which the degree pertains. The hood of the doctoral gown features velvet trimmings, the width of which designates the level of the degree. The color of the hood indicates the major field of study, and its lining identifies the institution that granted the degree. Morehouse’s doctoral gown is maroon with a maroon-and-white hood lining and white chevrons and panels. The colors below are associated with the various academic disciplines.

The Torch of Excellence Soon after Augusta Institute was founded in 1867, the endeavor to educate Black men came under threat: The Klan promised to burn the church down if educating Black men continued there. The founders knew that even if they could not continue on in Augusta, their vision could not die. Two men from Atlanta, the Rev. Frank Quarles and James Tate of Friendship Baptist Church, went down and convinced the founders that the school could continue under their protection and watchful care.
(led by Katherine Fu, Ph.D, assistant professor of mechanical engineering), recognizing decades of collaboration between the two colleges in the Dual Degree Engineering Program. This Torch was lit in Augusta at Springfield Baptist Church, and then carried on a symbolic run through downtown Augusta before being transported to Atlanta. There, it was relit at the site of Friendship Baptist Church and carried onto Morehouse’s campus to be part of the Commencement exercises. The Torch now remains a part of Commencement. Every year, the Torch leads the academic procession onto the green, representing the light of knowledge that is passed on from teachers to students to future generations. As the Torch of Excellence comes to the stage, the light is extinguished. It is now the responsibility of this class to take that light of excellence out into the world.
As part of the 2017 Sesquicentennial celebrations, Morehouse College recognized the heroic efforts of those who strove to ensure the light of excellence that is Morehouse never went out. Envisioned by Keith Hollingsworth, Ph.D., a Torch of Excellence was created. The Torch was a special engineering collaboration between Morehouse College (led by Willie Rockward, Ph.D., then chair of the Department of Physics) and Georgia Tech

DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS
Raphael G. Warnock, Ph.D. Raphael Gamaliel Warnock ’91 made history on Jan. 5, 2021, by becoming Georgia’s first Black U.S. senator. Warnock was born on July 23, 1969, in Savannah, Ga., and grew up there in the Kayton Homes public housing project. One of 12 children, he was the son of a father who was a veteran, small-business man, and preacher, and a mother who taught her 12 children that they could do anything they put their minds to. “I stand before you as a man who knows that the improbable journey that led me to this place in this historic moment in America could only happen here,” Warnock said in his senatorial acceptance speech. “We were told that we couldn’t win this election. But we proved that with hope, hard work, and the people by our side, anything is possible.” After graduating from Savannah’s Sol C. Johnson High School, Warnock enrolled at Morehouse College, unsure about how he would pay the tuition. With help from sources such as low-interest student loans and federal Pell Grants, however, he graduated cum laude from Morehouse in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Warnock later earned master of divinity, master of philosophy, and doctor of philosophy degrees from Union Theological Seminary, affiliated with Columbia University. He graduated with honors and distinctions, and was ordained in the ministry. In 2005, at age 35, Warnock became the youngest person ever called to the senior pastorate of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, spiritual home of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Under Warnock’s leadership, more than 4,000 new members have since joined the historic church. Warnock’s election to the U. S. Senate in 2021 was in a special election runoff to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of the late Sen. John Isakson. Warnock took the oath of office on Jan. 20, 2021, and since then, he has served on the Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, as well as the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the Senate Special Committee on Aging, and the Joint Economic Committee. Among other honors, Warnock has been recognized as one of “Atlanta’s 55 Most Powerful” by Atlanta magazine, one of the “New Kingdom Voices” by Gospel Today magazine, one of “God’s Trombones” by the Rainbow Push Coalition, a “Good Shepherd” by Associated Black Charities, one of the “Chosen Pastors” by The Gospel Choice Awards, “A Man of Influence” by the Atlanta Business League, and one of the “Top 10 Most Influential Black Ministers” by Loop 21. He received the coveted “Bennie Trailblazer Award” from Morehouse College in 2021. Warnock has also received the Reverend Dr. William A. Jones Justice Award from the National Action Network, is a National TRIO Achiever Award recipient, and has been honored by induction into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers. Warnock is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and 100 Black Men of Atlanta, as well as a lifetime member of the NAACP. His footprints are also on the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame, and as an opinion leader, Warnock’s perspective has been sought by media, locally, nationally, and internationally. His work has been featured on CNN, the CBS Evening News, The Huffington Post, and in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which hailed him “a leader among Atlanta and national clergy, a fitting heir to the mantle once worn by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

Honorary Degree Candidate
DOCTOR OF LAWS
James E. Clyburn James E. Clyburn is the Majority Whip, the third-ranking Democrat in the United States House of Representatives, and currently serves as the Chairman of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis. He is also the Chairman of the Rural Broadband Task Force and Democratic Faith Working Group. When he came to Congress in 1993 to represent South Carolina’s sixth congressional district, Congressman Clyburn was elected co-president of his freshman class and quickly rose through leadership ranks. He was subsequently elected Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Vice Chairman and later Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. He previously served as Majority Whip from 2007 to 2011 and was Assistant Democratic Leader from 2011 to 2019. As a national leader, Clyburn has championed rural and economic development, and many of his initiatives have become law. His 10-20-30 federal funding formula was included in four sections of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and has been expanded to 18 accounts in recent years. Congressman Clyburn is also a passionate supporter of historic preservation and restoration programs. His efforts have restored scores of historic buildings and sites on the campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. His legislation created the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor and the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, elevated the Congaree National Monument to a national park, and established the Reconstruction Era National Monument in South Carolina’s low country. Congressman Clyburn’s humble beginnings in Sumter, South Carolina, as the eldest son of an activist, fundamentalist minister and an independent, civic-minded beautician grounded him securely in family, faith and public service. His memoir, “Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black,” was published in 2014, and has been described as a primer that should be read by every student interested in pursuing a career in public service. Congressman Clyburn and his late wife, Emily England Clyburn, met as students at South Carolina State University and were married for 58 years. They are the parents of three daughters: Mignon Clyburn, Jennifer Clyburn-Reed, and Angela Clyburn, and have four grandchildren.

Academic Honors 2022
2022
Jeffrey Pierre White II
Joshua Curry
Valedictorian
Co-Salutatorian
AGE: 29
AGE: 20
MAJOR: Biology
MAJOR: Software Engineering
HOMETOWN: Suffolk, Virginia
HOMETOWN: Atlanta, Georgia
Jeffrey White is a biology major with a passion for scientific inquiry. His research interests lie in neglected tropical diseases that are endemic within low-income subpopulations of developing regions. The Suffolk, Virginia, native is particularly interested in visceral leishmaniasis (a parasitic disease found in tropical and subtropical areas), “and the biochemical modalities that underpin its pathogenesis.”
From a very young age, Joshua Curry has been interested in technology. However, growing up in the Bahamas, opportunities for him to participate in STEM activities were scarce. After attending a summer program focused on science and technology at an elementary school in Atlanta, Curry was sure that this was the place for him to be.
The 29-year-old chose to attend Morehouse “due to its storied commitment to social equity beyond its hallowed gates,” he said, “as well as its acceptance of the manifold Black and male identities that inhabit the space.”
Fast forward a few years later. Curry is now a freshman in high school and living in Atlanta. He meets several friends who foster his love for technology and computer science. And, it is in high school that Curry decides that he will pursue a career in software engineering, starting with obtaining a degree in the field.
Activities White has been involved in during his campus career include volunteering for environmental justice initiatives as a member of the NAACP Youth & College Division, and working at the Davenport Laboratory of Pathogenic Protozoa as a Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Scholar, studying the kinetoplastid L. donovani. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS The McNair Scholars Program, Phi Delta Epsilon Health Fraternity, the Health Careers Society, Phi Beta Kappa Society, Honor Roll, Achievement Rewards for College Scientists Foundation Scholar, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, U.S. Department of Energy STEM Scholar, Morehouse College Departmental Scholar NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY “The Department of Biology, and the culture of assiduous scholarship and mentorship therein, facilitated my acquisition of requisite skills, which proved auspicious during my matriculation at the College. They helped me to grow as a nascent researcher capable of contributing to the corpus of knowledge in my subdiscipline of interest.” WHY YOU CHOSE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE “Given what the halls of this erudite mother had to offer, I knew that the only choice was to seek my own place amongst this number and enroll.” SENIOR AWARDS RECEIVED Valedictorian INTERNSHIPS Connect to Clinic Care intern for Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition Inc. PLANS AFTER GRADUATION Pursuing a Master of Public Health degree with Global Health Concentration at Brown University.
Today, Curry is graduating from Morehouse College with a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering as Co-Salutatorian along with exceptional academic honors. It’s been a long ride, but he’s finally at the finish line. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS National Society of Black Engineers, CodeHouse Student Mentor, Karat Student Ambassador, Howard Thurman Honors Program, Phi Beta Kappa Society, Culturally Relevant Computing Lab Undergraduate Researcher NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY “Culturally Relevant Computing Lab has been the most integral to my success. The lab, along with Dr. Kinnis Gosha, Dr. Naja Mack, and Dr. John Porter, has offered me a multitude of opportunities to better my technical skills in an environment that fosters learning and collaboration with other students, both undergraduates and postgraduates.” WHY YOU CHOSE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE “I’ll be honest. I went with Morehouse because they gave me the most money and allowed me to graduate debt free. However, I stayed for the people. I have met some of my best friends here in the AUC, and I’m eternally grateful for that. These are bonds that will last well after graduation. Not only are my peers amazing, but I’ve met some of the most genuine and caring professors here, as well.” SENIOR AWARDS RECEIVED Co-Salutatorian, Summa Cum Laude, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Honors, Dean’s List, Honor Roll INTERNSHIPS Software Engineering Intern for Autodesk, #EarlyBird Participant at Twitter, Computer Science Summer Institute Participant at Google, Software Engineering Intern for URx InternHacks, Software Engineering Intern for Compa, Software Engineering Intern for Vower PLANS AFTER GRADUATION “Currently still seeking entry-level software engineering opportunities but I’m also thinking of taking a much-needed break from four years of work and school or following in my mother’s footsteps and becoming a teacher. I’d like to teach computer science to younger students since I didn’t have as many opportunities to learn about the subject until I moved to the U.S.”

Jaeden Charles Johnson
Garret Kahlil Oatis
Co-Salutatorian
Co-Salutatorian
AGE: 22
AGE: 21
MAJOR: Political Science
MAJOR: International Studies and Spanish Minor
HOMETOWN: Texas City, Texas
HOMETOWN: Chicago, Illinois Jaeden Charles Johnson, a political science major, is graduating as a Howard Thurman Honors Scholar, a King Legacy Scholar, a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. They began teaching, speaking, and organizing around police violence and carcerality as a junior in high school, and have since participated in several teach-ins and panel discussions on prison and police abolition.
Garret Kahlil Oatis of Chicago is receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies with a minor in Spanish. At the age of 15, Oatis decided that he wanted to pursue his higher education at a Historically Black College/ University (HBCU). Three years later, he was admitted into Morehouse College on a full-tuition scholarship.
MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS Howard Thurman Honors Program, Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Scholars Program, Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program, Phi Beta Kappa Society NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY Most integral to Johnson’s success at Morehouse has been the cross-registration program the College offers with the Atlanta University Center and the Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education. Through both programs, they have been able to take full advantage of Atlanta’s rich inter-institutional scholarly community. In registering for elective courses at Spelman College, Georgia State University, and Emory University, Johnson learned from, and built relationships with, professors who offered invaluable support. WHY YOU CHOSE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE One reason Johnson chose Morehouse was because of the strong community of student organizers associated with the College, whose premier organization went by the name of AUC Shut it Down, and whose impact was reverberating across the country. Johnson sought to learn from these students about the work of ending sexual violence, queer and transphobic violence, police violence, gentrification, and houselessness in Black communities. Morehouse, the AUC, and Atlanta offered opportunities to grow politically and intellectually.
His parents, Kimberly and Mitchell Oatis, and older siblings, Khari Shelton and Ianna Oatis, all graduated from college. Kahlil Oatis, however, is the first one in his family to graduate from an HBCU. In the fall, Oatis will attend Northwestern University to pursue a doctorate in African American Studies. Oatis hopes that his work in graduate school will contribute to the advocacy and activism surrounding albinism, an inherited genetic condition that reduces the amount of melanin pigment formed in the skin. MOREHOUSE COLLEGE AFFILIATIONS Phi Beta Kappa Society, Sigma Iota Rho Honor Society, Foreign Language Peer Tutor
SENIOR AWARDS RECEIVED Co-Salutatorian INTERNSHIPS At the end of their freshman year, Johnson received an opportunity to participate in a first-year research program sponsored by the Leadership Alliance Mellon Initiative. This allowed them to receive experience as a research assistant in the University of Virginia’s Department of Politics. The program offered Johnson information and guidance about applying to, and attending, graduate school, while also helping them craft a research paper to present at the 2019 Leadership Alliance National Symposium. In 2020, Johnson received another research assistant position with the University of Minnesota’s ICW Public Scholarship and Teaching program. PLANS AFTER GRADUATION Pursuing a doctorate in philosophy at Emory University.
Throughout his undergraduate career, Oatis dedicated himself to academic excellence by maintaining a 3.9+ GPA for nearly eight semesters. In addition to his strong performance in the classroom, Oatis developed an affinity for scholarly research within the field of humanities. During the summer of 2019, he worked as a summer research assistant at the University of Virginia as part of the Leadership Alliance Mellon Initiative First Year Research Experience Program. During the spring semester of 2020, he was selected to be a UNCF Mellon Mays Research Fellow where he developed his own independent research project. Oatis has also presented some of his past projects at conferences, such as the 2019 Leadership Alliance National Symposium and the 2020 University of Florida Political Science Research Symposium at Tuskegee University.
NAME OF THE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE PROGRAM MOST INTEGRAL TO YOUR SUCCESS AND WHY “The UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship was instrumental to my current success as it prepared me for graduate school. It provided me with invaluable resources and connections that aided in the application process and the overall expectations of pursuing a career in academia.” WHY YOU CHOSE MOREHOUSE COLLEGE “I chose Morehouse College because I wanted a place that would allow me to build community and deepen my passion for education and scholarship. I can confidently say that I have done both things in my time at Morehouse College.” SENIOR AWARDS RECEIVED Co-Salutatorian INTERNSHIPS Summer research assistant at the University of Virginia, and undergraduate research fellow with the UNCF/Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) PLANS AFTER GRADUATION In the fall, Oatis will be attending Northwestern University to pursue a doctorate in African American Studies.

Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Lift ev’ry voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty. Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies; Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us; Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won.
Dear Old Morehouse Dear old Morehouse, dear old Morehouse, We have pledged our lives to thee; And we’ll ever, yea forever, Give ourselves in loyalty. True forever, true forever To old Morehouse may we be; So to bind each son the other Into ties more brotherly. Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, Make us steadfast, honest, true To old Morehouse and her ideals And in all things that we do. J.O.B. Moseley ’29
