Baccalaureate Preacher The Rev. Dr. Jamal-Harrison Bryant ’94 Senior Pastor, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church

s a visionary, civil rights activist, and community organizer, the Rev. Dr. JamalHarrison Bryant combines sound Biblical teachings, business acumen, and political insight to propel the Body of Christ to action and greater levels of faith. Since his youth, Bryant has prevailed against the odds—rising from a GED to a Doctor of Ministry degree. Before pastoring, he served as the national youth and college director of the NAACP for six years, helping to mobilize more than 70,000 young people worldwide in nonviolent campaigns. Bryant, a third-generation minister, was the founding pastor of the Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland, a church acclaimed as the fastest-growing African Methodist Episcopal church in the denomination’s history. He possesses an undeniable gift to bridge generations from the Civil Rights Movement to the Black Lives Matter era, and incites change in the faith community. Bryant’s ability to reach across social, economic, and political barriers has also helped people to not only experience the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ, but also to activate success in their everyday lives. Bryant’s ministry has become an incubator for entrepreneurs and homeowners, and programs under his guidance have aimed to spread the Gospel, develop strong leaders, empower the economically disadvantaged, and challenge social injustices. In December 2018, Bryant was appointed senior pastor of the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Stonecrest, Georgia. His leadership efforts have already strengthened the multi-generational bond among members, expanded community outreach, cultivated families, and expanded the church’s cultural significance.

Hallelujah

Dear Old Morehouse

Hallelujah! unto God’s Almighty Son. Praise the Lord, ye bright angelic choirs, In holy songs of joy.

Dear old Morehouse, dear old Morehouse, We have pledged our lives to thee; And we’ll ever, yea forever, Give ourselves in loyalty.

Man, proclaim His grace and glory! Hallelujah! unto God’s Almighty Son. Praise the Lord in holy songs of joy.

True forever, true forever, To old Morehouse may we be; So to bind each son the other Into ties more brotherly.

Ludwig van Beethoven

Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, Make us steadfast, honest, true, To old Morehouse and her ideals And in all things that we do. J. O. B. Moseley ’29
