TRAILBLAZER

JOHN K. “JK” HAYNES ’64 Distinguished Educator, Researcher and former Dean of Science and Mathematics

Dr. John K. “J.K.” Haynes ’64 is an educator, academic administrator, former Morehouse dean, and renowned biologist and researcher—well-known for discovering methods for the detection and treatment of sickle cell anemia. A Louisiana native, Haynes began attending the Southern University Laboratory School at only 6 years old, and he graduated from that school as class cosalutatorian. He entered Morehouse College at 17, and received his bachelor of science degree in biology from the College in 1964. Following his years at Morehouse, Haynes went on to attend Brown University, earning his doctorate in biology in 1970. Afterward, he completed a year of postdoctoral research at Brown, working on restriction enzymes and becoming interested in sickle cell anemia. That interest led to a second postdoctoral appointment in biochemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where Haynes worked with scientist Vernon Ingram, an MIT professor who did ground-breaking work on sickle cell anemia.

He later joined the faculty at the Meharry Medical School where he continued his own research on sickle cells. Haynes returned to Morehouse in 1979 as an associate professor of biology, and director of the Office of Health Professions. He created a program for high school students interested in medical school, helped recruit minority students into science, managed grant funding for building projects, and was named the endowed David E. Packard Chair in Science and chair of the biology department. In 1991, Haynes returned to Brown University, on sabbatical, to continue his work on sickle cells. He came back to Morehouse in 1999 to serve as the College’s dean of science and mathematics.

In 2008, Sellers earned his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law but he had made history in 2006 when, at just 22, he defeated an incumbent state representative to become the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature. At that time, he was also the youngest Black elected official in the nation. Sellers represented South Carolina’s 90th district in the state House of Representatives from 2006–2014, and in 2014 he was the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor of South Carolina. In addition, Sellers has worked for Congressman James Clyburn from South Carolina, and former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin. In addition to his impressive list of early accomplishments, Sellers served on President Barack Obama’s South Carolina steering committee during the 2008 election campaign. He was named to Time magazine’s top “40 Under 40” list in 2010 and 2014, as well as “The Root 100 List” in 2015. Sellers has served as a featured speaker at events for the National Education Association, College Democrats of America National Convention, and the 2008 Democratic National Convention. And in

2007, he delivered the opening keynote address to the AIPAC Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. He is also the author of The New York Times best-selling book “My Vanishing Country: A Memoir,” which illuminates the lives of America’s forgotten, Black, working-class men and women. Sellers’ inspiring children’s book, “Who are Your People?”, was launched in January 2022. The book is “a tale steeped in pride, centering on two Black children learning about their familial and cultural legacy,” said Publishers Weekly. Sellers currently practices law with the Strom Law Firm LLC, in Columbia, South Carolina, where he heads the firm’s strategic communication and public affairs team. He is also a CNN political commentator and addresses a variety of topics each week on “The Bakari Sellers Podcast.”

ACHIEVEMENT

PAUL S. “PJ” MORTON JR. ’03 Grammy Award-Winning Musician, Composer, Educator, Recording Artist, and Member of Maroon 5

Paul “PJ” Morton ’03 is perhaps best known as a keyboardist for the pop band Maroon 5, but he’s much more than a musician. The Morehouse College graduate has been making his mark as a versatile producer, arranger, singer, songwriter, and multiple Grammy Award-winner, known for his own albums, as well as studio work for other performers.

“Interested.” In 2009, Morton published the book “Why Can’t I Sing About Love?” And a year later, he was chosen by Maroon 5 to temporarily take the place of keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, who had gone on vacation. Morton toured with the group in 2010, and became a full member, as keyboardist and background vocalist, in 2012.

Morton, a New Orleans native, was born to renowned gospel musician Paul S. Morton and Pastor Debra Brown Morton. Influenced by his talented family while growing up, he learned to play musical instruments, such as the keyboard, and sang in church.

Morton also continued his solo career, releasing the album “New Orleans” in 2013. The album’s lead single, “Only One,” featuring Stevie Wonder, earned Morton a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song in 2014.

After graduation from St. Augustine High School— a Catholic, all-boys school in New Orleans—Morton attended Morehouse, earning a marketing degree in 2003. During this period, Morton also launched his music career, releasing an album with Freestyle Nation and contributing to India Arie’s Grammy-winning 2002 album, “Voyage to India.” He released independent albums, such as “Emotions” (2005) and “Perfect Song” (2007) while collaborating with Anthony David, LL Cool J, Faith Evans, Monica, and Kierra “Kiki” Sheard. And Morton had his own gospel hit with “Let Go.” Morton also added to the song “Sajna” from the film “Couples Retreat,” and won Grammy Awards for his songwriting and production on India Arie’s

In 2016, Morton moved back to New Orleans and founded his own Morton Records label. The next year, he released his album “Gumbo,” which included Morton’s Grammy Award-winning cover of the Bee Gees’ “How Deep is Your Love.” In recent years, Morton has released several albums: “Christmas with PJ Morton,” “Paul,” “Gospel According to PJ,” and “The Piano Album.” He also accepted an artist-in-residence position at Dillard University in New Orleans for 2021-2022, teaching classes in songwriting, music publishing, studio production, and talent management. “I went to an HBCU and it’s important for HBCU graduates to step up and give back to that community,” he said.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND PHILANTHROP Y

JUDSON W. PICKARD JR. Cincinnati Businessman, Philanthropist Owner of McDonald’s Franchises

Judson Willie Pickard Jr. began his life in the small town of LaGrange, Georgia, with seven siblings and two hard-working parents. Pickard’s parents were involved in the community, and as a young man, he vowed to follow their example. For most of his life, Pickard has provided opportunities for others, crediting his faith, family, education, entrepreneurship and excellence with helping him to keep that vow. Pickard received a bachelor of science degree in business from Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee. He taught business courses and coached both baseball and basketball in the Milwaukee Public Schools before moving to Michigan to join the staff of the Detroit Urban League as a project manager. Pickard began his career as an entrepreneur by becoming a McDonald’s owner/operator with Dr. William F. Pickard, his cousin. This led to a career of more than 40 years, owning and operating multiple franchises through Pickard Enterprises, with his wife, Donna, and three sons. Pickard’s generous philanthropy includes a seven-figure gift to Morehouse College—given with his cousin William Pickard—which supports Detroit, Flint, Cincinnati and LaGrange, Georgia, students. Judson Pickard and William Pickard both have children who have graduated from Morehouse and Spelman colleges. “We are committed to helping African American men thrive as leaders, scholars, and future businessmen,” said Pickard. “Morehouse College’s mission is focused on developing men who are committed to academic excellence, community service, and leadership.

22

“This partnership aligns with our family’s vision and values on the impact of historically Black colleges on student success.” Notable, academic support also includes Pickard’s scholarship at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural and Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Centers, both within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion at The Ohio State University. Pickard’s major gifts include a donation to Fisk University (the alma mater of Pickard’s wife), and a gift to Pickard’s own alma mater, Lane College. Pickard has also adopted a South African orphanage and donated money for renovations at the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Cincinnati. In 1986, Pickard received the Ray Kroc Award, presented to only a small percentage of McDonald’s operators worldwide, and the 1987 Ronald McDonald Award for his work in Cincinnati. He is a 2021 Jenny E. Lane Legacy Society inductee at Lane College, a Hall of Fame inductee in the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky African American Chamber of Commerce, as well as a 2020 inductee in the Cincinnati Black Business Hall of Fame. Pickard was also recognized in 2018 by the Greater Urban League Guild for his longtime funding of an Urban League scholarship student program, which included Pickard’s wife, Donna, as well as William F. Pickard, and Inez Clayton. The philanthropist received the 1998 Small Business Excellence Award from the National Bank in St. Louis.

MOREHOUSE COLLEGE

The Gala of Galas Morehouse knew it needed to enhance its annual Founder’s Day celebration when alumni and friends of the College expressed the need for a formal, elaborate and celebratory fundraising event to draw them back to the College. Atlanta residents and local corporations, as well as members of the philanthropic community, were continually flooded with invitations from nonprofit organizations requesting their participation in fundraisers, so Morehouse needed to launch a unique, memorable event. It was imperative that the Morehouse College family did all it could to make its event stand out by conveying several special facts about the College, such as: • Morehouse, founded in 1867, is the nation’s only predominantly Black, all-male institution of higher learning; and • The College is noted for its legacy of producing graduates who have become leaders in a variety of fields. Despite the disheartening statistics regarding the plight of Black males, Morehouse continues to attract many of the nation’s brightest Black male students and provides an environment that is academically challenging and socially enriching. Morehouse is committed to raising funds to ensure that a college education remains attainable for qualified Black males who are financially disadvantaged. In 1988, alumni Robert H. Bolton ’86 and Hardy R. Franklin Jr. ’83, who were members of the College’s development team, conceived the idea for the “A Candle

in the Dark” Gala. With the support of President Leroy Keith ’61 and Richard A. Ammons, the institution’s vice president for development, plans were developed to unveil the Gala on Feb. 18, 1989, as a part of the College’s 122nd Founder’s Day Celebration. The Gala is named for the official history book of Morehouse, written by alumnus Edward A. Jones ’26, “A Candle in the Dark: A History of Morehouse College.” The black-tie affair was designed to highlight the College’s traditional mission of producing leaders, pay tribute to nationally acclaimed Black leaders who are considered giants in their respective fields, and showcase the talents and oratorical skills of Morehouse students. It would also serve as one of the College’s major annual fundraising activities, with the goal of attracting approximately 1,000 guests, and generating revenue for the institution’s endowed scholarship fund. Honorees would be presented with either a “Bennie” or “Candle” Award. Atlantabased artist Lev. T. Mills was commissioned to design what would become two of the nation’s most coveted awards. The late Mordecai Etchison Jr. sculpted the initial awards. Today, each award is individually hand-sculpted by renowned Lillie Glassblowers in Smyrna, Ga. “Bennie” recipients, who must be graduates of the College, receive recognition in the categories of service, achievement, and trailblazing. The award is named in honor of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays, who served as Morehouse President from 1940 to 1967, and is considered a legend among all alumni.

“Candle” recipients are honored for excellence in a variety of fields including the arts, athletics, business, education, entertainment, government, law, medicine, the military, religion, and science and technology. In 1989, the “A Candle in the Dark” Gala was recognized as the most outstanding special event in Georgia and presented with the “Phoenix Award for Excellence” by the Public Relations Society of America, Georgia Chapter. Since the first “A Candle in the Dark” Gala, the College has presented “Bennie” and “Candle” Awards to hundreds of talented individuals from a wide variety of fields. In 1998, alumnus Henry M. Goodgame ’84, in his capacity as director of alumni relations, the annual fund and special events, began providing the direction and coordination for the Founder’s Day and Gala planning activities. He leads a college-wide team of dedicated staff to take the award-winning Gala to new heights of excellence. Indeed, the Gala has become a signature event for Morehouse, Atlanta, and the nation. In 2004, Morehouse officials had the distinction of presenting the first Candle Award to an outstanding African American woman, Oprah Winfrey. College friends, supporters, and alumni await with great anticipation their annual invitation for the “A Candle in the Dark” Gala. Since its inception, the Gala has grossed more than $30 million, with net proceeds benefiting the Morehouse College General Scholarship Fund.

The Office of Health Professions is delighted to congratulate Dr. J.K. Haynes on being honored as the 2022 recipient of the Bennie Trailblazer Candle in the Dark Award. For 43 years, Professor Haynes has excelled as a distinguished educator at his alma mater where he served as former Director of the Office of Health Professions, former Chair of the Department of Biology and former Dean of the Division of Science and Mathematics. Though he distinguished himself in all these capacities, what he is best known for is his love of science and research, his gift as a teacher, and his ability to inspire and encourage his students with his positive attitude and unwavering commitment to education. Congratulations, Dr. Haynes, for all you have contributed towards the success of the Office of Health Professions over the years. Because of your steadfast support and commitment, over 750 graduates of Morehouse College have excelled as accomplished physicians, dentists, research scientists and MD/PhD graduates. Dr. Haynes, you are most deserving of this great honor and we celebrate you. Ajit Samarasinghe Director, Office of Health Professions
