It is not uncommon for a student in the United States to matriculate through their entire K12 experience without ever seeing a Black male teacher at the front of their classroom. Currently, less than 2 percent of public school teachers are Black men. The Morehouse College Center for Excellence in Education (MCEE) was established in 2019 to address that societal problem and help close the representation gap that exists in the nation’s K12 education system. In keeping with the mandate of Morehouse College to prepare men to lead consequential lives, MCEE is an incubator of passionate educators and those determined to improving learning outcomes, particularly for students in urban communities. The academic center is working to produce a pipeline of exemplary Black male educators who are committed to social justice, equity, and liberation through teaching and learning. MCEE’s offerings range from educator preparation that leads to graduates becoming master classroom teachers to programming that develops policymakers, researchers, and leaders equipped to reform education. Additionally, Morehouse embeds the core value of social justice in all aspects of the student experience and the work of the Center. Our students are compelled by a sense of duty to address the inequities and disparities that disproportionately impact people of color. The Center offers a curriculum shaped by theoretical and scholarly traditions that are unique to Morehouse College. MCEE’s innovative interdisciplinary design prepares students for graduate study and a wide

MAKING MEN OF CONSEQUENCE

“WORKING WITH MCEE HAS ENLIGHTENED ME TO THE FACT THAT EDUCATION ENCOMPASSES MORE THAN TEACHING IN A CLASSROOM; IT IS AN INTERSECTIONAL FIELD WHICH INCLUDES SCHOOL LEADERS, POLICY MAKERS, ARTISTS, COUNSELORS, RESEARCHERS, ARCHITECTS, PSYCHOLOGISTS AND MORE. MY EXPERIENCE WITH MCEE HAS INSPIRED ME TO CONTINUE TO IMPACT YOUNG MINDS THROUGH THE FIELD OF EDUCATION POST-GRADUATION, AND FOR THAT I AM FOREVER GRATEFUL.” LETTRELL HARRIS ’21 | MCEE FELLOW PHYSICS STUDENT, DOCTORAL PROGRAM MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
