The demand for smartphones is increasing with every passing day. According to market research firm IDC’s forecast, there will be 269.6 million smartphones sold globally in 2010, an increase of 55.4 percent from the figure of 2009 which stood at 173.5 million phones. Reason for a drastic surge in smartphone’s demand is the fact that it is much more than a phone. It is more powerful than a desktop computer you had couple of years ago.

The idea of solar island was first discussed between the UAE government and the Swiss company La Centre Suisse d’Electronique et de Microtechnique (CSEM) some five years ago. According to the company, “we are trying to make sure its commercial viability and the precision of project. In the first test, the 250tonne platform was lifted using no more power than is needed to run four hairdryers. The second test measured its rotation, and a twoweek test last month measured its CSEM has already started a project to design and built the first prototype of such a solar island. On the top, it houses a small plastic lid that covers the microUSB port and the unprotected 3.5mm standard audio jack, no need to say you put any of your likes. We were more concerned with the inside specs and we happily enjoyed all our operations on Samsung’s own 1GHz Hummingbird processor, paired with 16GB of
You can change the sequence of panes with the help of your finger. Activate the small menu by touching menu button at the bottom left and go into the editing mode. Save your choices after you are done. With the add option on the same menu you can customize the widgets, shortcuts, folders etc. You can choose from number of widgets provided by Samsung and the Android. If a chosen widget doesn’t find its place on the active pane, it will automatically suggest you choose another one. In this menu we found the Quick Search Box option very handy to find anything inside our phone. No need to search through option to get you desired thing either a contact or anything from the web.
RAM; with a microSD card option you can satisfy your storage hunger upto 32GB. For all our activities, 16 GB was more than enough. On the connectivity side, it offers triband 900/1900/2100 HSDPA/HSUPA along with WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 and a mi-

croUSB 2.0 port; there’s also GPS, an accelerometer, digital compass, and both proximity and light sensors. It has two cameras: one, a 5-megapixel autofocus unit on the back, and a VGAquality front facing camera for video calls. Though, the flash is absent, which is of course our second desire, nevertheless, you can record 720p HD video at 30fps. If we are forgetting to mention what would amaze you the most after you first see this phone, it is the 4 inches of display of this phone fully supported by Samsung’s own Super AMOLED technology with 16 M colors and a resolution of 480 x 800 px. Colors are vivid, brightness is strong. In fact, the most beautiful display to look at indoors doesn’t lose its charm in the open and the brightness of the day. The sensitivity of its capacitive touchscreen is marvelous. The slightest of touches will do what you have in mind. www.apnatime.com
The Android phonebook is excellent to save almost every detail of your contact. The smartphone display contacts from your phone memory, SIM along with all your Google contacts on this single place. It’s easily manageable and quick to find either through flick-scrolling or alphabet scroll. On any contact, a swipe to the right will dial the contact’s default phone number whereas a swipe to the left will activate the SMS module to be sent on his/her default number. Calling with Samsung Galaxy S is superb. There are no reception and in-call voice quality issues. Proximity Sensors will automatically turn off the screen during a call. The call log shows all the dialed, received and missed calls in one list sorting your call history by contacts. September 2010 | More | 21
review Swipe on the contact or go the messaging application through menu. Another way is to activate the text editor, type your text and button to send this text as SMS is also available. Either way, messaging is awesome and very easy. There are no folders, just a new message button. Under that button is a list of all your messages organized into threads. SMS/MMS search has been made easy with this application-specific search that lets you find a message having the typed search word with a blink of an eye. Again, there multiple typing option. It is just the matter of choice where you find the ease.
On any contact, a swipe to the right will dial the contact’s default phone number whereas a swipe to the left will activate the SMS module to be sent on his/her default number. Google Talk is a real treat to remain connected. On Galaxy S it works similar to any PC.
The Gmail app supports batch operations, which allows multiple emails to be archived, labeled or deleted. Multiple Gmail accounts are also supported. You can also configure other email accounts with an option to set multiple POP or IMAP inboxes. Those having lots of email accounts can combine and display all the emails in a common inbox to avoid opening every single one.
Video playback is best in Galaxy S. it can play a number of formats. It also supports DivX and XviD. It can play well any high resolution movie. You can watch the movie on its screen or enjoy it on a bigger screen using TV-Out feature. You can also stream your content (movies, images) using DLNA support to any DLNA-enabled TV or PC with a DLNA support/software. No matter where you have placed the file, video player will locate the movie and play it. You will have before you the entire list of saved files. You can set the brightness of the screen according to the lightening condition. During our tests, we were able to watch movies continuously for 8 hours before the battery went dead. Music player is easily customizable. Sort the music by playlist, album, artist, genre or remove any of the tabs if you don’t like to see. Samsung has enhanced the music experience by adding equalizer and bass booster options. You can choose the preset or fix your own. Sound quality is extraordinary. Similarly, FM equipped with RDS will also amuse you by scanning all the available stations

review camera is good Samsung has built a reputation in mobile camera domain. Galaxy S with 5 mega pixel (which is a norm today for a high end phone) auto-focus camera is not going to disappoint you. We have seen several phones from Samsung, HTC and other vendor missing the dedicated camera key on the outer body. Those who are used to with the dedicated camera key should not fear of spoiling favorite image in the absence half-pressable shutter key. Company has all the solution inside; application performs all of its function through its in-
terface. I personally think, physical shutter key is getting obsolete. What Galaxy S does, its touch focus feature is used to focus the subject and taping the shutter key gets the job done. Camera offers all the widely used functions including blink detection, image stabilization, geotagging, smile detection, face detection and auto contrast. Same way, video recording of 1280x720 pixels at 30 fps generate a good quality and detailed video with low noise levels

n A prototype ultrafast scanner capable of digitizing a book in one minute will be built within two years, said the chief researcher of the team at the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. The "book-flipping scanning" system works with a camera that can take up to 500 photographs per second, enabling it to record about 170 book pages in 60 seconds as a person thumbs through
them. The system adjusts for the distortion caused by the curvature of the moving pages by measuring their three-dimensional forms using infra-red beams, so that the images can be electronically "flattened" to look like the original. "We believe this is the world's fastest (scanning) system as far as the technologies already published are concerned," said Yoshihiro Watanabe, who leads the
research team. "We are considering using robots to turn the pages automatically and more neatly," he said. The university researchers teamed up with Japan's Dai Nippon Printing this month to put the technology to practical use, with the aim of building a prototype scanner within two years. Japanese printing firms are diversifying into ebooks, which can be read using handheld devices such as Apple's iPad tablet computer or Amazon's Kindle. Mr Watanabe said the technology to rapidly capture 3D images of fast-moving objects could be used in a variety of applications from robotics to industrial and automotive design. "It could also be used to develop a safer and more comfortable driving system," he said. "If mounted on a car, this could take 3D images of obstacles ahead or dents and bumps in the road to avoid them. "If loaded into the eyes of robots, they would be able to move much faster than humans." n this unique concept is equipped with a receptacle, that collect urine samples for analysis, that are then checked for sugar levels and body temperature. signal boosting wi-Fi antenna If you happen to live in an area where getting good Wi-Fi reception is not possible, what solution is there for you? We dread to think of the kind of place which you will need to stay at if you can’t even receive a Wi-Fi signal from the next room (maximum security prison, anyone?). Well, good thing there is a solution even if you stay in a nuclear bunker – the Signal Boosting Wi-Fi Antenna. We hope that this device will certainly work as advertised, where it is touted to increase your home computer network’s wireless speed and reliability in areas of weak signal strength. This patented device will come in a spatially-diverse design that has been specially optimized to receive signals in all polarizations, where a spherical signal pattern goes about capturing weak signals that lesser antennas drop, resulting in better reception, which will be especially beneficial for streaming video. It can hook up to your current wireless router, replacing only the physical antenna so there is no need for software installation or reconfiguration.
aMd shows off atom crushing netbook chip
AMD has demoed a new low cost, low power mobile processor for netbooks and cheap notebook PCs. Known as Zacate, the new chip was shown giving Intel's much more complex and expensive Core i5 processor a spanking in several popular PC games. The demo took place in San Francisco as AMD cashed in on the presence of the tech community at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF). The basic details of Zacate go something like this. It's a dualcore processor based on AMD's new low-power Bobcat core and it packs an integrated DX11 graphics core. Rated at 18W, there will also be a 9W model known as Ontario. Both will be made by Taiwanese foundry TSMC in 40nm silicon. Overall, the new chip is tiny, much smaller, for instance, than AMD Phenom II quad-core processor. AMD focused on the graphics performance of Zacate. Surprisingly, AMD chose an Intel Core i5 laptop as the comparison platform. Core i5 is traditionally found in relatively expensive mid-range laptops rather than netbooks and cheaper portables.

Curbing the illegal SIMs n Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has made extraordinary efforts to curb illegal issuance of SIMs and to ensure authentic antecedents of mobile subscribers by implementation of one of its kind “Online Verification of Mobile Subscribers’ Antecedents through NADRA’s Database-789” in February 2009. After having successfully implemented the system for mobile operators, PTA has extended its efforts by bringing the WLL operators under the same umbrella. In this regard, Chairman Dr. Mohammed Yaseen has inaugurated the call centers of M/s Worldcall and M/s Wateen here at Lahore.
While talking on the occasion Chairman PTA said, facilitation of the genuine subscribers must be our top priority, but not at the cost of national security. Fake subscribers must be discouraged at any cost and all-out technical and other efforts must be made in this regard. Operators are also bound legally to make sure that only genuine subscribers avail the communication facilities provided by the operators. Wateen has cleared 100% and worldcall has cleaned its 65% subscribers and remaining are in the process with NADARA and would be cleaned by the next week.
During his discussion address, Mr. Chairman emphasized the importance of authentic documentation and urged the WLL operators to spare no stone unturned while issuing the new connections strictly in accordance with the laid down procedures for new regime. Under the new process all WLL service providers are now linked with NADRA data base, and all WLL connections shall be activated after its verification from NADRA. CEOs of both M/s Worldcall and M/s Wateen assured their full compliance to the procedures in order to make certain availability of authentic credentials of the subscribers.
Ufone, the only Pakistani Telecom Brand makes a mark at a global forumCurbing the illegal SIMs n Ufone has been nominated for the Best Brand Award by the esteemed ‘World Communication Awards (WCA)’ committee which is the most prestigious telecom awards around the globe and as some may call it, the Oscar of the telecom industry. This nomination is another feather in a row to the cap of Ufone as WCA, earlier in July, had also nominated Mr. Abdul Aziz CEO & President Ufone for the Best CEO of the Year Award 2010. Amidst these troubling times for Pakistan good news is difficult to come by; however, Ufone has yet again proven to be original and outstanding. Ufone is one of seven companies worldwide, and the only one in Pakistan to have been shortlisted for ‘The Best Brand 2010’. This is indeed a great feat and a moment of pride for both Ufone and Pakistan. Ufone’s nomination should be no surprise, When it comes to originality and innovation, no one does it better than Ufone. This nomination is a result of the risky but innovative strategies Ufone has employed throughout the years. The original humor Ufone employ in their adverts is just one such strategy which is now vainly being copied by the rest of the market. At a time when standard advertisements were the name of the game Ufone came forward and took a risk; it formulated everyday humor into its adverts and won the hearts of millions.
www.apnatime.com
Today Ufone advertisements are awaited by viewers of all ages and social classes to see how the next concept will bring yet another smile to all with its uniquely humorous communication. After this nomination Ufone has not only made its mark locally but internationally as well. Commenting on this auspicious nomination, Mr. Akbar Khan Chief Marketing
Officer Ufone said, “At a time when distress has over-ridden the country, this news comes as a source of inspiration and great pride for Pakistanis”. “Ufone thanks all its customers for their loyalty and support without whom this feat would not have been possible, and promises to continue making U, the customers, smile through these hard times”, he added.

n The recent illegal strike observed by some miscreant groups in PTCL is now finally coming to an end and situation is returning back to normalcy as large number of employees have not only reported back to their workplaces but have also resumed their duties, press release said. This is a vindication of the management’s stance regarding this illegal activity as we have been maintaining all along that this strike was undertaken by elements having vested interests without any regard for the employees’ welfare. The standpoint was also supported by the honorable High Courts, NIRC benches, and Labor Courts by declaring this strike as illegal. The management has already given a very generous package to the employees including salary increase, bonus, and promotion opportunities and there was absolutely no reason for any kind of a strike except for the self-serving attitude and personal agendas. It said that the management has been consistently interacting with the employees telling them the exact situation and advising them not to become pawns in the hands of these miscreants and finally, the reality of situation has started to dawn upon the employees and they have realized the actual designs of these elements. The management is also reciprocating this gesture with an open heart and has decided to release the salaries of all such employees who have reported back to work. Consequently, salaries of about 26,500 out of 29,000 employees have been released. The process of termination of service of those employees who are still abstaining from work or resorting to these acts of hooliganism has been started. It also needs to be mentioned that all those misguided employees who had resorted to sabotage and terrorist activities by inflicting damage to PTCL network and installations are being handled strictly without any compromise. This situation has particularly been alarming at Lahore where more than 120 malicious cuts of optical fiber have been committed by these miscreants.
tims in the relief camps. The gifts packs consisted of mehndi, bangles for women and dolls, footballs, toys, wrist watches and sun glasses for children. Employee volunteerism is a core value of Mobilink’s Culture of Excellence and employees are strongly encouraged to develop a humanitarian spirit. The Mobilink Foundation Torchbearers are sanctioned to clock an average of 4 to 5 dedicated hours per person per month during official working hours. On average the volunteers spent more than 4,800 hours in 2009 in community service initiatives. In the past, Mobilink has carried out extensive relief efforts for the 2005 earthquake victims as well as built a large relief camp for accommodating 1,000 families of IDPs from Swat in 2009.
Motorola Foundation helps flood victims n In response to the recent floods in Pakistan, the Motorola Foundation has donated US$50,000 to CARE (www.care.org) and pledged an additional US$50,000 to match Motorola employee donations to CARE. “Our sympathies are extended to the people affected by these natural disasters” said Karen Tandy, senior vice president, public affairs, Motorola. “This donation is an example of Motorola’s continued commitment to humanitarian relief throughout the world.”

Month in foCuS Intel Details 2011 Processor Features, Offers Stunning Visuals Built-in n Intel Corporation revealed several significant design features for the company’s 2011 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ processor family at the Intel Developer Forum. The new and enhanced features will further extend Intel’s chip performance and battery life leadership, and add a number of visually related features built right into the chips. Codenamed “Sandy Bridge,” the chips will be based on Intel’s first new “visibly smart” microarchitecture produced on the company’s cutting-edge manufacturing factories, or “fabs,” at 32-nanometer (nm is a billionth of a meter) process technology with second- generation high-k metal gate transistors. “The way people and businesses are using computers is evolving at an explosive rate, fueling demand for an even more powerful and visually appealing experience,” said Dadi Perlmutter, executive vice president and general manager of the Intel Architecture Group. “Our upcoming 2nd Generation Intel Core processor family represents the biggest advance in computing performance and capabilities over any previous generation. In addition
to offering these features inside Intelbased laptops, we plan to scale these advances across our server data center and embedded computing product portfolio.” The processor family will include a new “ring” architecture that allows the built-in processor graphics engine to share resources such as cache, or a memory reservoir, with the processor’s core to increase a device’s computing and graphics performance while maintaining energy efficiency. The 2nd Generation Intel Core processor also includes an enhanced version of Intel® Turbo Boost Technology. This feature automatically shifts or reallocates processor cores and processor graphics resources to accelerate performance, tailoring a workload to give users an immediate performance boost when needed. Laptops and PCs powered by the 2nd Generation Intel Core processor family are expected to be available early next year. New Visual Experience – Visibly Smart Intel’s new processor graphics delivers enhanced visual features focused on the areas where most users are computing today: HD video, 3-D, mainstream
gaming, multi-tasking and online socializing and multimedia. To obtain and view video faster, Perlmutter demonstrated hardware accelerated video editing using the architecture’s dedicated silicon for media processing, which allows users to quickly convert video to other formats. The 2011 chips also come with Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (AVX). AVX delivers improved performance, rich functionality and the ability to better manage, rearrange and sort data. A new 256-bit instruction set accelerates floating point intensive applications such as digital photo editing and content creation. Intel also demonstrated a dual processor, next-generation Intel® Xeon® processor server running Vidyo* video conferencing software that utilizes the 32 threads available on the system, and takes advantage of the AES New Instructions set (AESNI). Next-generation Xeon™ processors for 2 socket servers and workstations run 8 cores and 16 threads per processor and are on schedule for production in the second half of 2011.
wi-tribe’s flood relief efforts n In Pakistan, wi-tribe employees organized a ‘Relief Drive’ using donations from their salaries to support victims of the devastating floods. wi-tribe employees volunteered their time to procure, pack, transport and distribute the goods themselves. With the much appreciated aid of the Pakistan Army stationed at Kot Addu, a very organized relief effort was executed, utilizing 100% of the funds to provide over 200 family care packages containing 1 month of relief rations and goods. With each care package, wi-tribe provided a family of 5 with 1 ration sack (36 Kg of food supplies including powdered milk, cooking spices, rice, sugar, dates, cooking oil, pulses, energy biscuits, tea and non-food supplies including antiseptic soap, sanitary pads, candles, ORS, mosquito repellent, and anti-rash cream) + 1 sack of wheat (10 Kg) + 2 Jerry cans (with a capacity of 20 Litres each) + mineral water + 1 bag of mixed pickle (1 Kg), all amounting to 30 days of consumables for a family of 5. Talking about the relief efforts, Mustafa Peracha, CEO of witribe Pakistan said, “Considering the devastation that has taken place, we felt it was our obligation as members of society to reach out to those suffering in the wake of the floods. I am proud to say that wi-tribers worked as one team and initiated an internal relief effort drive to not only contribute financially to the cause, but also volunteered to visit the affected areas ourselves.”
