Introductions. They help you to get a first look at someone or something, such as what is in a book like this. However, I hate making introductions because I never really know what to say in them, so this introduction is going to be short and sweet. This book is to let you know all about my work in graphic design, my process, and my experience as a designer. So look over the pretty pictures and fly through the text, while looking through each section. My motto is simple when it comes to my work in graphic design projectsJust think. design. repeat.

annual report. Pacific Sunwear Annual reports have a tendency of just showing facts and numbers, often boring the client to death while reading it. Since Pacific Sunwear is a company that prides itself on fun beach wear, their annual report should also be fun! Bright colors reflect the company, as well as colorful pictures reflecting their target audience and sunwear clothing sold at Pacific Sunwear stores. The annual report is more open and clean than many normal annual reports, calming the reader by not throwing a clutter of information all on one page. Now who says annual reports have to be boring?
product catalog. Danskin Dancewear Danskin Dancewear sells clothing and products for dancers, therefore the color scheme of pink, black, and white is fitting. I chose to make this catalog focus on not only the product, but also how dancers use those products by showing large scale black and white photographs alongside of the products for sale. These large scale photos I photographed myself of a fellow friend of mine who happened to be a dance major. These photos are meant to focus on the dancer using the products, instead of just wearing them. Taking dance as a child, I found this piece to be a fun piece to work on.

Mazda 5
The makers of the Mazda 5 decided to have artists paint some of their new Mazda 5’s in a graffiti style to promote to their target audience for the vehicle. With this promotional piece, I chose to make it also reflect the target audience- the younger surfing and skating community. Bright colors and flame-style ornamentation contrasts the black and white photos of the target audience. This piece is to be fun, as well as informative. It showcases the fun nature of the car, as well as showing all the great new features that it includes.

In Europe and Japan, where there’s little room or tolerance for big SUVs, compact crossover utility vehicles are very popular. corporate identity. package design. The Mustard Market When choosing the logo and company to be used for this package design, a made-up company called, “The Mustard Market was chosen. This company would be a deli that specializes in gourmet mustards. like any place where food is sold, drinks are something that you would want to pick up while you’re there. With this, I give you the non-traditional soda cup package design. Since it is a mustard market, the drink cups are made to look like mustard bottles. Since most people often give a disgusted face after pitched the idea of drinking out of mustard bottle, the dividers to the 4-pack include funny saying poking fun at the idea. After all, a mustard bottle is just about the same size as a water bottle, however they are bright yellow!

logo designs. Various Companies When asked to create logo designs, we could chose to take existing companies, as well as create our on in the process of making logos. The first, fuRENTiture is a company I created for a rent-to-own furniture company with a funky twist. Treeline Landscaping, Fields Power Production, Good Boy! Veterinary Clinic, Sweetooth Energy Drink, The Mustard Market, Blue Flame Campgrounds, and Tiki Tom’s Party Outlet are also companies I created the names and ideas, besides the logos for. The Mary Kay, Celebrate! Movies, New York and Company, American Health Awareness, and S & S Packaging Products, Inc. are existing companies that I re-designed the logos that would replace their existing logo. Each logo has their own unique style depending on the company image and values.

book cover design. Home Improvement Manual Book covers are sometimes one of the hardest things to design, since you have only a few seconds for someone’s eye to be drawn to the book when it is shown on a shelf at a store. With this book cover design, I chose to use a tri-tone to give the earthy, down-to-earth feeling of home improvement. Inside, the tool belt continues from the cover, and have pockets on the inside that can hold a bookmark or notes that the reader might have while using the manual. A complementary ruler bookmark would be given with the book, to help the reader to make the right measurements while using the book.

history of... piece. History of Coca-Cola Coca-Cola is something that many of us cannot imagine what life was like before it was around. For those who always drink CocaCola products but know nothing about the history of the company, this piece is for you folks. With this “history of” piece, the history booklet is in the form of the actual Coca-Cola bottle label. The booklet fits onto a soda bottle, as if it was the actual label on the drink. Inside, bubble-like patterns showcase pictures from each time period in a timeline style. The Coca-Cola red and silver waves bring you through each page of the piece, starting at the beginning of Coca-Cola’s history. The cover takes on what is on a Coca-Cola label, but re-vamped to include text describing what’s in the booklet, such as a Coca-Cola Facts section, instead of Nutritional Facts. To finish up the booklet, the back cover is the front cover reversed and made more transparent, mimicking how a soda label looks after it is taken off the bottle.

typeface book. Univers This piece takes a specific typeface and focuses on the letter forms as a whole, as well as the typeface designer’s biography. With this book, I chose the typeface “Univers which was made by a Swiss designer, therefore a clean use of bold shapes and diagonals was used to convey the Swiss feeling. Since the typeface designer often looked upon designing type to that of an architect, I chose blueprint style patterns for the cover. The main design element is the shape on the Swiss flag, which ties each page together, but changing with each page. The tags on the front give it a point of interest, in order to get you to see what this book is all about.

cd promotional piece. “Listen to Me” I was asked to create a cd design using the design concepts of deconstructivism and pastiche. This project I found to be one of my favorites, since it gave me a chance to be creative and enabled me to think outside of the box. The concept takes on a “music is a drug” theme throughout the piece.

art nouveau book. Belgium and Netherlands Art Nouveau Doing pieces that take on a time period’s style is always fun. With this I decided to take a “history of...” project and design it in the form of what the book is about. Since this book is about Belgium and Netherlands Art Nouveau, I chose to make the book hard cover, hand bound, and with creamy tan paper to reflect the style of books made during this era of design. I also used dingbats in-between the major paragraphs to reflect how book designers would create a totally justified column without the use of a computer. There is however a new twist in the design, but the use of bold full page color photos reaching to the edge of the pages.

chimera: a journal of literature and art. Edinboro University of Pennsylvania During my senior year at Edinboro I was asked to be one of the designers for Chimera: A Journal of Literature and Art. This great honor entailed many hours working with the artists chosen in the art show contest, the photographers, writers and other various participants in the project. Our overall theme for this edition of Chimera was to separate the two portions, Literature and Art, by making two books joined at a central spot. If the two halves are rotated, the spine creates the whole title. The secondary theme to the project was incorporating the start-tofinish of the writer and artist’s project. We asked for sketches, notes and other various items used to help them get to the final product. This piece was one of the HOW magazine international student design award winners among other various awards won.

internship work. corporate logo and identity pieces. Ross Plumbing & Heating The clients requested a logo that had the “feeling of Harley Davison without copying the existing logo of the motorcycle company. Since the clients are extreme Harley Davison fans, they wanted their business’ logo to reflect not only their business but their own personality as well. With this in mind, the orange and black become key, as well as a shield like effect to the logo. To some the colors seem odd for a Plumbing & Heating company, however that is what makes them stand out when you see the logo placed next to others in their field. A business card, invoice, and possible van decal setup was also created besides the logo for the clients and their business.
33
corporate logo and identity pieces. Diagnostic X-ray Service, Inc. This client requested a re-vamping of their current corporate identity systems and publications. The client’s company is actually three companies under one name, so they originally had three logos- one for each of the companies. Since they wanted a new way to join the three together, I thought of the idea of a logo where they all can use it, but still personalize the text to their company. To the left is the logo chosen to showcase the new look of their identity system. A single pantone color was chosen to give a cleaner look, and to join together all of the pieces. The logo reflects the client’s profession of using x-rays by showing positive and negative, as well as having rounded edges to the box around the “x”. A pocketed folder and 4-panel inserts was also requested to send to customers.

recent work. graphics, logos and page designs. Calkins Media newspapers While working for Calkins Media newspapers I have created numerous graphics, logos and page designs. Each day on average I produce more than four individual graphics and two to eight page designs. I also work together with the web design team to create items for the three newspapers: The Bucks County Courier Times, The (Doylestown) Intelligencer and The Burlington County Times. Most graphics are made to work along with stories written by the newspaper’s reports, however there are times when certain graphics are made to stand alone. Many of the logos created for the papers are used on a regular basis throughout the year.

website design. website for unscriptedlive.com. Calkins Media newspapers While working with Calkins Media and The Intelligencer newspaper, I was asked to create a new website for the paper’s teen section. Due to budget costs, they decided to make the teen Unscripted section into a web-only news product. This website included various spots for the teen reporters to blog, discuss and write about things happening in their lives and throughout the world. The website design also won various awards with the Society for Professional Journalism.

interactive biography section. BucksReality.com I was asked to create an interactive flash biography section for the BucksReality.com website, part of the Bucks County Courier Times. This website is an addition to the special section devoted to teen writers in the area and includes much more items than the print edition. The website needed a spot for all of the writers to introduce themselves to the community and we decided a flash interactive addition would be perfect for the job. I created the interactive biography section completely with Adobe Flash and Photoshop.
43
interactive presentation of athletes. All-Intell fall, spring and winter teams I created three interactive flash presentations showcasing the area’s best high school athletes in the fall, spring and winter sports. Each interactive presentation based its theme off of the chose design idea of the print edition, which I also helped create. These interactive presentations allowed for the athletes to share their accomplishments with an large online community and to show those of their friends and family who might not have been able to get the print edition for themselves. The fall flash presentation won an Honorable Mention for interactive web with the Society for Professional Journalism.
