FROM PRESIDENT CHRISTIAN MOCEK
Dear Alumni & Friends,
As a newcomer to this community, a common question I’m asked when meeting with alumni and friends is, “What are your first impressions?” I often respond that I can sum up my first impression of the Reitz Memorial community in three words: faith, family, and tradition.
These three words speak volumes about the Reitz Memorial experience. It’s an affirmation of our faculty and staff who have worked tirelessly throughout the years to ensure our students graduate rooted in faith and prepared for what is next in their lives. It’s an affirmation of our alumni and benefactors who proudly live out the values of Reitz Memorial High School in their homes and places of work.
It’s also an affirmation of our students who show up everyday ready to achieve excellence both in and out of the classroom. I’m honored and humbled to join this family of faith.
I’m not the only new member of the staff this year. This Fall, we added seven new members to our Reitz Memorial family. We welcome Madison Aiton (Drivers Ed & PE), Patrick Redmond (English), Heath Howington (Business Education), Dulce Hernandez (World Language), Stevie Faith (Resource), Nick Grigar (Choir/Junior High Band), and Samantha Myers (Executive Assistant to the President) to the staff.
In addition, we welcomed the largest freshman class in four years to Reitz Memorial. And, as we do every year, we have seen lots of success in the classroom and on the field. Our Tiger community has a lot to be proud of as we close out 2021.
Of course, we could not do any of this without the prayers and financial support of our parents, alumni, and friends. This school year, we made significant investments in classroom technology, renovated our
SPOTLIGHT ON THE PRESIDENT
What drew you to become Reitz Memorial’s new President?
There is so much I could say here. I’m not sure where to begin. When you walk the hallways of Reitz Memorial, the tradition and history are tangible. As the interview process unfolded, it became clear to me that Reitz Memorial is a family that is hoping for big things. It’s hard not to see the potential of this school community. Catholic education made me the person I am today, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to lead this great Catholic school.
How would you describe your leadership style? Collaborative, compassionate, engaging, empowering, and prayerful. Leadership is a privilege that needs to be earned through service. I sincerely
hope to earn the trust of this community and I know that together we can reach our highest potential.
What goals do you hope to achieve in your Presidency?
I hope to bring together the Memorial family of alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to collaboratively realize our vision of providing an environment where God inspires, we educate, and students thrive. I want to build on the work that’s been done for the past 96 years and ensure Reitz Memorial is poised to thrive for the next 96 plus years. I’m excited to tell the Reitz Memorial story and to include in our journey all who aspire to advance our mission.
What do you do for fun?
I love to spend time with my family. Our weekends usually consist of trips to the zoo or playground.
weight room, and gave away nearly $300,000 in tuition assistance because of the support of people like you.
Thank you for your commitment to Reitz Memorial High School. Thank you, also, for your welcoming embrace of me and my family. We are excited to be part of this Reitz Memorial community rooted in faith, family, and tradition. As we prepare for the birth of Christ this Advent, I wish you the best of holiday seasons. Know of our prayers.
Christian Mocek PresidentWe love taking walks around the neighborhood and if you see us, don’t hesitate to say hello. I’m also a big Notre Dame football fan so I like to watch the games on Saturdays. With any luck, our two kids, Simon and Eloise, will become big fans too.
What are you most looking forward to about living in Evansville?
Evansville is a big, small town. It’s a great place to raise a family and everyone has been so welcoming to us. The Zoo and Children’s Museum are a lot of fun – you can tell I have small children. Most of all, I’m grateful to all those who have reached out and welcomed my family. We look forward to meeting more of the Reitz Memorial family in the coming months.
ENROLLMENT SUCCESS IN A PANDEMIC
How do you showcase your school to prospective families during a pandemic? With numerous COVID-19 protocols and procedures put in place for the academic school environment, it was certainly a challenge.
During a “normal” year, we would welcome eighth graders from our partner schools to campus allowing them to experience life as a Tiger. Additionally, we would host an open house in the fall welcoming all families to tour campus, meet faculty and students, and learn more about the opportunities at Memorial. Since this was not a typical school year, and visitors were restricted, we had to think outside of the box. And that is exactly what Brian Heathcott, Enrollment Director, did.
“We knew the enrollment process needed to be more personal than ever and a connection to each prospective family needed to be made,” said Heathcott.
When it was all said and done, our enrollment had its own
little success story to start the 2021-2022 school year. From the school’s year-to-year first day starting enrollment numbers, this was the first time an enrollment increase had been seen in five years. To top that, it was the largest enrollment increase seen in 15 years. As for the incoming freshman, they represent the largest freshman class Memorial has seen in four years.
Brian shared a few examples of what played a role in the enrollment increase from this past year.
“To start the school year, each eighth grader received a personalized package in the mail that included a welcome letter, a Memorial face mask, and a USB thumb drive,” Heathcott said. “Uploaded on that USB thumb drive was a virtual tour, academic departmental videos and so much more. Anything you would ever need to know or see was organized and at the user’s fingertips. Best of all, Memorial Principal, Sally Sternberg, created 174 individual welcome videos addressing each eighth grader by their first
name. Now that’s special!”
From November to April, we began hosting monthly interactive online meetings for prospective families covering a variety of topics. Families received important information and were able to ask questions in a moderated chat format. The online attendance and interaction truly supported how successful this initiative was.
In years past, eighth graders would register for their freshman year courses at a course registration meeting on campus. With not having the option of gathering, the counseling department was faced with scheduling individual online meetings with each family to create their course schedule. As you can imagine, this was a longer process, but the personal connection that was developed and individual attention that was provided outweighed anything we had done in the past.
What is great about change is that it provides new opportunities. There were many new initiatives that needed to be created due to the restrictions that were set because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and we would have never put into action this different plan if it wasn’t for the circumstances at hand. It took the COVID-19 pandemic to alter portions of the enrollment process and truly change how it can be approached differently moving forward.
CAMPUS MINISTRIES
BY: JOE PAUL HAYDENOver the summer, Reitz Memorial’s Campus Ministry hosted Campus Ministry Mondays (CMM) every Monday in the month of July. This was an opportunity that connected current students over the summer months, as well as an organic avenue for incoming freshmen to connect with their peers and upperclassmen too. CMM proposed three goals: Pray Together, Play Together, and Challenge Each Other. More than 40 Memorial students attended, 23 of which were incoming freshmen. Students are already looking forward to next July’s CMM!
What came as a natural response to CMM was the school organization Campus Ministry Club (CMC). CMC, which began September 2021, is an initiative that seeks to promote human, pastoral, and spiritual formation to students within a community setting. CMC offers multiple opportunities: small group Bible studies, faith-based presentations, community games, pilgrimages to Saint Meinrad, intramural sports, and much more! Since September, CMC has reached more than 100 students (one-fifth of the school population), with 50-60 students who regularly attend.
To highlight these elements within Memorial in order to point to an individual or individuals would be misleading and incorrect; rather, it is essential to share these aspects to witness what Christ is doing within these historic walls of Reitz Memorial Catholic High School. Christ is the sole and ultimate reason that this school exists, which is to form students into men and women that influence and change
society for the better. We all have an innate desire to love and to be loved, and I believe that opportunities like CMM and CMC encourage and as sist students to both give and receive authentic charity. May God continue to bless Memorial in forming students to be happier and holier; Let’s fight like a Tiger and live like a Saint!
WEIGHT ROOM RENOVATIONS
This summer, Memorial started on the weight room renovation project, which included fresh paint, new flooring, and new equipment. After much anticipation, the 2021 weight training classes were the first to use the new weight room in September. Thank you to all who donated to make this possible for our students!
KEY CLUB
Fostering a Commitment to Service
BY: JENNY KOCHACADEMIC & STUDENT LIFE
Fostering a commitment to Service. These words form the book end of our mission statement at Reitz Memorial High School and they also inspire the Key Club student leaders to create a culture of sharing, kindness, and community service in their school environment. Recently, club members celebrated Key Club Week. This five-day advocacy campaign encourages members to spread the word about Kiwanis International, a global service organization in 38 countries as well as local branches. They shared social media posts, met new students at lunches and created special announcements about the importance of service.
Kiwanis students are tasked with providing service opportunities for their peers. In doing so, these Key Club Kiwanis members become leaders; they run monthly meetings, organize food drives, and have recently partnered with Chemo Buddies to take on a bracelet-making frenzy during homeroom block. This fun, engaging project brought students from all grades to the cafeteria where students collaborated to assemble hundreds of trendy bracelets. After a few sessions, these bracelets were sold at lunch and the money was donated to help cancer patients. In October, students also partnered with SMILE on Down Syndrome, providing a fun pumpkin-painting booth at the 20th anniversary of the Smile Mile. Watching students interact with, dance with, and paint pumpkins with local children makes anyone proud to be a Tiger!
These projects are fostering a commitment to service through collaboration and a sharing of time and talent. Future projects include car washes, giving trees, and the Riley Walk. It is always our hope that these projects, however small, are cultivating a sense of service. As Key Club leaders think of new projects or research community organizations in need, please pray that they be led to inspire others to serve, continuing our true mission of Faith, Knowledge, and Service.
FALL PLAY: “STEALING HOME”
BY: TWYALA CARNERThe Theater department’s fall play is the comedy “Stealing Home” by Pat Cook. The play is about two would-be thieves who mistakenly enter a funeral home. There is a case of mistaken identity (or not) and the hilarity that ensues. The students have been hard at work since August honing their acting skills and timing. Two students, Zane Schroeder (’24) and Abby Vollmer (’23) who play the thieves, have really impressed the directors. They had a majority of their lines for the first scene memorized the second day of rehearsal and their comedic timing is spot on.
“We have been blessed with some very dedicated students who have persevered under trying circumstances. They have worked very hard to develop their characters and have really bonded as a group. Our ‘wonderstudies’ have been such a tremendous help when actors have had to miss practice,” said assistant director Twyala Carner.
Mrs. Rachel Johnson has been on maternity leave since just after auditions took place. Cole Brinker, performing arts student
from the University of Southern Indiana and a Reitz Memorial High School alumnus (’18), has taken over the directing duties. He grew up in Evansville and was active in a diverse set of activities but found a passion for theatre. He began to attend D’alto Studio of Performing Arts and began to hone his craft in the theatre field.
He has been involved with several community shows and theatre companies in the area such as Evansville Shakespeare Players, D’alto Studio of Performing Arts, Evansville Civic Theatre, Stage Two Productions, and EVSC Summer Musical. Within academics, he has performed in multiple Reitz Memorial Theatre Department Productions such as “The Addams Family Musical,” “Flowers for Alger non,” “Curtains the Musical,” “Arsenic and Old Lace,” and “Wizard of Oz.”
At USI, he has worked closely with the lighting department and has
pus.” Currently Cole is working towards a double major in theatre arts and English teaching with a minor in a secondary teaching licensure. Cole feels honored to direct a show at his alma mater and has found great passion for working with the students. He simply cannot wait
FORENSICS CLASS IS ON THE CASE
BY: SARAH BOHRERForensics and biology students got a chance to collaborate and apply their skills to solve a murder mystery that occurred in the halls of Reitz Memorial. On a Friday morning in September, Principal Mrs. Sternberg was preparing for a meeting and eating lunch in a conference room where she was later found “dead.” That afternoon, the forensics students in Mrs. Bohrer’s class were able to practice techniques of crime scene investigation by searching for and collecting evidence.
They took pictures of the scene, took measurements, and drew sketches of the crime scene. The next week in Forensics classes, students analyzed the evidence and determined the possible suspects. Based on the evidence, they determined that Mrs. Sternberg was killed by poison in her lunch by someone who left the building that day and brought her lunch. The suspects were narrowed down to Assistant Principal Mr. Chamberlain; Theology teacher, Mrs. Koehl; and Campus Minister, Mr. Hayden. Armed with this information, the forensics students went around school to interview suspects and witnesses to gather information.
One crucial piece of evidence was the “vomit” found next to Mrs. Sternberg’s body. Forensics students collected samples from the crime scene which could later be tested in the lab. Freshman biology students in Mrs. Bohrer, Mrs. Murphy, and Mrs. Steffenhagen’s classes were eager to assist in the investigation.
They watched videos of the suspects and witness inter-
views conducted by the forensics classes to gather information and context. They then performed a series of tests to determine the types of macromolecules found in the vomit, to determine what food Mrs. Sternberg ate for lunch.
Once all evidence was compiled and analyzed, students concluded that Mr. Chamberlain was the number one suspect. Luckily for Mr. Chamberlain, the forensics classes determined that they did not yet have enough evidence to convict him, but they hope as they learn more forensics techniques this year they can continue to analyze more evidence.
In the end, it was a fun way to engage the students and faculty in a learning experience that they won’t forget.
Weinzapfel family of football alumni and a future alumnus.
Coach Ralph Weinzapfel, who was head football coach at Memorial for 20 years, was accompanied by his three sons and grandson at the event. In addition to coaching football, Coach Weinzapfel was a teacher, Dean of Students, and head baseball coach for five years. Having introduced the wrestling program, he was also head coach for 22 years.
During Coach Weinzapfel’s tenure as head football coach, he had the privilege of coaching all three of his sons, Joe (’82), Jonathan (’84) and Andrew (’88). Both Jonathan and Andrew also wrestled for their dad. Coach Weinzapfel retired from Memorial in 2002 after 38 years of service.
Professional careers took the Weinzapfel sons to varied occupations. Oldest son Joe lived in Germany and worked as a sales representative for a company that required him to travel throughout Europe, Russia, and South Africa for 15 years. Joe has one son and continues to work for the German based company, but he and his wife Cecilia have recently moved to Italy.
Jonathan, an attorney, served District 76 in the Indiana House of Representatives for five years. He was elected Mayor of Evansville for two terms, serving from 2004 to 2012. Upon completion of his second term, he was appointed chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College. Currently, he is a partner with an Evansville law firm and is interim President and CEO of Indiana United Way. He and his wife, Patricia, have three children and currently reside in Evansville.
Youngest son, Andrew, followed in his father’s footsteps. He taught and coached football in Indianapolis for eight years but then returned to
Evansville to continue his career in education at a city high school. Andrew also served as head football and head wrestling coach, retiring from coaching in 2010. He continues to teach and has been involved in the Memorial feeder and cub football programs. In his spare time, Andrew, like his dad, works in the family farming operation. Andrew and his wife, Holly, have 3 children and reside in the original Weinzapfel family farmhouse in St. Philip in Posey County.
Drew Weinzapfel (class of 2023) is the son of Andrew and Holly and the grandson of Coach Ralph Weinzapfel. A member of the 2021 Memorial football team, Drew becomes the third generation and legacy of the Weinzapfel football tradition at Memorial High School. As the saying goes, “The tradition continues.” And on a side note, it’s probably a good guess that Drew gets extra coaching in football as an added bonus! Drew is also a member of the Memorial track team.

SPRING 2021, INDIVIDUAL IHSAA STATE CHAMPIONS
CALLING ALL CHAMPIONS
In 2016, the Athletic Department began displaying IHSAA State Cham pionship rings with the State Championship trophies. The idea to seek out past years’ state rings occurred when a 1989 and 1996 state baseball ring were given to the Athletic Department for dis play in their trophy cases.
To complete the collection of rings, the sports and years as indicated are needed. If you would like to donate your state ring for display, please call the Reitz Memorial Athletic Office at 812-476-4632 or you can stop by the office. The addition of these rings would add a finishing touch to the already impressive display of State trophies in our Athletic hallway.

MEMORIAL LADY SOCCER TIGERS 2021 State Champions!
BY: JOE MEYEROur Lady Soccer Tigers delivered yet another state championship to Memorial High School!
In dramatic fashion, in the 93rd minute of the match, in the second overtime, with one minute before the match would have gone to penalty kicks, the team executed a corner kick to perfection, clinching yet another championship for our storied program.
While the championship moment took place in Indianapolis in October, the foundation for success started in June and, as always, was built on faith, strength, family, and tradition. This team was focused and fit and earned the right to be confident. Our fan base turned out in mass in Indianapolis on a cool and cloudy Saturday afternoon. Our team walked through a tunnel of tradition, as alumni players greeted them as they took the pitch, reminding the young women of the support they had and the tradition they were fortunate to be a part of.
The opposing team was talented and executed a strategy aimed at frustrating and tiring our team. Our young
women were up to the challenge both mentally and physically, never waver ing from their belief that they were the better team.
Senior leadership and parental support were once again key ingredients to the championship run. Memorial soccer is a family and that support system helped the team to overcome every challenge. Their motto was “always earned, never given” and it served them so well in the championship match as they earned every inch of their success. Championship teams have great players and great coaches, and we had both again this year. Great players have talent, selflessness, and an appreciation for being part of something bigger than themselves. This team was filled with truly great players. City, conference, and state championships in 2021. A twenty-win season, with two of the three season losses to two teams who played each other in a state championship match. The team made the investment necessary to achieve all their goals and
2021 TOMORROW’S WORK FORCE
Evansville Catholic High Schools hosted the 20th Annual Tomorrow’s Work Force on September 23, 2021. Fifteen Reitz Memorial seniors were recognized as leadership award recipients, with Mr. Jack Nichols winning the Leadership Scholarship Award and receiving a $1,000 scholarship.
We want to thank all our sponsors and supporters who made the 2021 Tomorrow’s Work Force Luncheon such an extraordinary event. We would also like to thank our keynote speaker, Suzanne Crouch, Lieutenant Governor of the State of Indiana. It was a wonderful event that showcased the talents of our student leaders, and we were certainly excited to have the event back in person this year.

INCOGNITO INSTRUCTORS
ity allow for integrated participation in numerous educational offerings.
it is no surprise the two of them partnered together to create a learning website to assist fellow students through the academic challenges of the pandemic. That website has now evolved into Incognito Instructors.
The goal of Incognito Instructors is to assist those who are seeking help on specific topics in their classes or would like to see content from a different perspective. It is student ran and offers services to students in grade school and high school. Incognito instructors are passionate about helping their community in any way possible.
“Through the creation of the website and service, Shaurya and I can effectively give back to the surrounding community,” said Blake. “We noticed that many of our peers needed help in certain subjects but felt embarrassed to ask for help.”
What sets Incognito Instructors apart from other conventional homework help services is that it is
completely free of charge and gives students the option to remain anonymous when seeking assistance. Users are also able to discuss the content with other students who have previously taken the class and are wellversed in the material. This concept will allow everyone to comfortably receive the help they need.
“Oftentimes, students refrain from reaching out for help from fear of being judged, which is why this service allows for individuals to keep their identity hidden while receiving the help they need,” said Shaurya.
Both Blake and Shaurya are currently taking courses at Memorial and the University of Evansville, Shaurya in math and Blake in language arts. Shaurya has been taking classes at the university level since his sophomore year and is currently taking Calculus 3. Blake is currently at UE twice a week participating in a communications public speaking course. Being able to utilize the resources at both Memorial High School and the neighboring UE is a huge asset in the development of students. The convenience and proxim-
Shaurya has developed an impressive educational accomplishment resume since enrolling at Memorial. While scoring perfect in math on the SAT and ACT in the seventh grade he was awarded full tuition scholarships to University of Kentucky and University of Louisville. As a freshman at Memorial with perfect scores in spelling, he led the team to an Indiana state spelling championship. Shaurya received local media attention during the PPE COVID-19 shortage when he was able to produce protective shields and masks and distribute them to numerous hospitals, nursing homes, and businesses in the Tri-State as well as across other parts of the country. This past summer, Shaurya was admitted into the Harvard Summer School seven-week program, took CS-80, Artificial Intelligence with Python, and earned college credits for the course.
Blake is a Memorial Student Ambassador and plays tennis, basketball, and runs track for the Tigers. Both students are teammates on the Memorial tennis team. Blake will be playing basketball this winter with Shaurya overseeing the basketball statistics and team analytics. Shaurya has developed an app using Swift and Google Firebase for the Memorial Basketball team to keep track of the statistics, player clocks, and shot charts. He is currently developing an app that has more advanced features including login functions, calendars, game leaders, game logs, and the ability to sync data between users. Thanks to Blake and Shaurya for using their expertise and creativity in a manner that can impact many individuals in such a positive way.
THREE SIBLINGS ON A MISSION
The Hurley Family
Discipline, dedication, determination, and a desire to make a difference are qualities one could use to describe the three Hurley children. Dane (’13), Drayton (’15), and Dawson (’19), the three children of John and Darby Hurley, graduated from Memorial High School and grew up watching their dad coach football. Not only did they see hard work and dedication from the players and the coaching staff, but they also saw how that hard work shaped individuals in all areas of their life.
When speaking to their parents about their children, one comment often made is, “they are completely different from each other.” However, there is something special about the bond of siblings, and no matter how different they may be from each other, there is one undeniable connection among the Hurleys. After graduating from Memorial High School, Dane, Drayton, and Dawson entered the Naval Academy and are serving our country. Dane Hurley, the oldest of the siblings, graduated from the Naval Academy in 2017 and is currently serv ing as a Naval Intelligence Of ficer in Jackson ville, Florida.
He recalls his memories about Memorial and how he grew up, particularly on the football field.
“As a younger kid, I looked up to the players on the team,” Dane said. There were two brothers in particular that played football, Mike (‘07) and Andy (‘09) Theising, who had an influence on Dane. The Theising brothers went to West Point after graduating from Memorial, and seeing the example those two set, Dane began looking into the military focusing on becoming an officer.
Dane’s position in the Navy doesn’t allow him to
discuss information concerning his job, but he did share a few exciting aspects of his service. Since he graduated from Memorial, he has lived in four states (Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida), been deployed to three different countries (Japan, Bahrain, and Qatar), and spent six months living in Germany.
“While at Memorial, I took German as my language elective,” said Dane. “Herr Hunt was the teacher at that time, and he made learning about other cultures and languages enjoyable. His influence definitely played a part in my decision to continue taking German in college and because of that I was able to spend six months in Germany as part of an exchange between our two countries’ navies.”
Dane plans to continue his service in the Navy for another five years.
currently stationed in Mayport, Florida. Drayton contributes her decision to enter the Navy solely on her brother’s desire to attend a Service Academy.
“From the age of nine, I listened to him proclaim his desire, and I knew if he was doing it, it had to be a good idea,” she said.
Drayton said that she is extremely fortunate to have attended Memorial, steep in its tradition with teachers and coaches that help shape an individual’s desire to succeed.
“Like my favorite teacher always preached to us, ‘fight for something bigger than yourself’ and joining the military felt like my way to do just that,” said Drayton.
Drayton said that she jokes with people that she and her siblings are like the dodo birds in Ice Age, running off the cliff following each other.
“But I love that we all decided to join the Navy,” she said. “It has definitely brought us all closer together even though we see each other less often now.” She also shared what it meant to her to serve her country. “It means I don’t see my family, my home, my bed, my dogs, and many other things I love, very often. It also means I get seasick a lot, and drink lots of coffee. I have a very unstable, stable job that ultimately consumes my life. That may sound bad and on some days I’d probably agree with you, but I love what I do and the people I get to do it with and the country we serve.” What a profound statement!
She lastly spoke about the amazing opportunity she had being stationed in Spain, and the other incredible places she was able to visit such as the Arctic, Batumi, Faroe Islands, and Greece.
Dawson Hurley, the youngest
sibling, graduated from Memorial in 2019. He missed his graduation ceremony, as he had to report for Plebe Summer, a seven-week indoctrination into the military, at the Naval Academy. His life has been at the Naval Academy since then. Dawson said he would like to commission into the Marine Corps as a pilot, and if he likes what he does, he could see himself staying in the military for 20 years.
Unlike his sister, Dawson doesn’t contribute his decision to enter the Naval Academy based on his older siblings, but what he does speak of, leads to all three of them having a desire to be in service.
“Growing up, I always thought being an ‘army man’ sounded pretty
tary seemed to offer an opportunity to join a close community with the ability to do some pretty cool stuff along the way.”
He said that since he has not yet entered the fleet, he knows he must work hard every day to earn the right to one day lead others.
“To know that one day I will have the opportunity to lead our nation’s brightest men and women is a pretty humbling feeling,” Dawson said. What an honor it will be to watch him succeed!
When speaking to individuals outside of the Navy, Dawson said it is hard for them to understand the many different things that go on, so having his siblings to talk to and getting their guidance is helpful and enjoyable. He lastly spoke about some of his most memorable moments at the Naval Academy so far. He was able to spend four weeks in San Diego and had the opportunity to fly a T-34 and MH-60 Seahawk, sleep in the middle of nuclear warheads on a submarine somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, and ride around in a LAV-25. He would like to spend a semester next year at the Theresian Military Academy in Austria, with the opportunity to complete mountain warfare training with the Austrian Mountain Troops in the Alps.
cool,” Dawson said. “I believe my high skill level at video games, such as Call of Duty, may have started that. I enjoyed service to others through clubs like RMDM and Best Buddies, as well as the camaraderie of athletics, especially football. After doing some research, the mili -
Thank you, Dane, Drayton, and Dawson, for your service and sacrifice. You are truly emulating the mission of the Naval Academy, “to develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character.”
LOOKING BACK ON THE PEACE CORPS
“The toughest job you’ll ever love.” That is the unofficial slogan of the Peace Corps. For Joseph Lutz, that slogan really does sum up his time in the Peace Corps. Joseph is a 2013 graduate and while at Reitz Memorial, he gained invaluable experience.
“I always enjoyed history classes, with the teachers at Memorial pushing me to constantly learn more and dig deeper into cultures – from the local level up to the international,” Joseph said. “Looking back on it now, I would say my theology classes and teachers also helped set the groundwork that led me to my Peace Corps service.”
Following Memorial, Joseph attended Purdue University, majoring in business management with a concentration in international business and a minor in history. During his time at Purdue, Joseph was able to intern for the U.S. Department of State, where he learned about the inner workings of government, as well as a deeper understanding of international relations.
After graduating from Purdue, Joseph applied for the Peace Corps, which is a long and tedious process.
“I always knew I wanted to serve others somehow,” he said.
“My parents had both been interested in the Peace Corps when they were growing up, so I had been exposed to it and knew about it. I decided I wanted to serve my country and others and that led me to the Peace Corps.”
Joseph flew out in June 2018 to the Republic of Moldova, a small postUSSR country in Eastern Europe. After an intensive 10-weeks of cultural, language, and competency trainings, Joseph moved to Milesti, a small village near the Romanian border. Joseph served as a Community and Organizational Development volunteer. He primarily worked at the library and community center, assisting civic organizations to develop resources to be successful and increase organizational capacity. Being flexible, Joseph would eventually take on additional roles in the community, including being an English teacher at the local school.
“While taking on this new role, I really felt a deeper connection to my adopted community,” he said. “It was a new experience with a learning curve, but it helped me reach members of the community that I hadn’t been able to at the library and community center.”
Joseph reminisced on his time
in Moldova stating, “as a Peace Corps volunteer, you go in hoping to make a positive impact and for me, I know that was true, but in many regards, I was more impacted. My host family is the model example of showing love to strangers; and now they have become my second family. I gained a deeper appreciation for fresh fruits and vegetables; an appreciation of quality wine and backbreaking work; and being comfortable in the uncomfortable.”
While in the Peace Corps, Joseph was able to visit additional countries and experience new cultures. He was able to visit many cities in Poland, Romania, Germany, Czech Republic, and even within Moldova. This helped broaden Joseph’s cultural understanding of other peoples.
“Whether at Memorial or elsewhere, my experiences and what I learned set me up for my future success, especially in the Peace Corps. Peace Corps gave me opportunities I couldn’t have imagined, and I met some incredible people.”
If you wish to know more about the Peace Corps and Joseph’s experience serving in Moldova, Joseph has shared his experience at lutzgoblog.com
JOAN CHARLOTTE HAYES CREECH (1930-2021)
BY: JOHN K. BROWNINGIknew Joan Creech from grade school at St. Ben’s but got to know her better when I was President at Memorial. Mrs. Creech was planning her 70th class reunion, and she came to Memorial to gather our alumni listing for the class of 1948. We talked about her time at Memorial and her family. I started a new Memorial tradition that day and offered to cover the cost of their 70th reunion.
On October 20, 2018, we hosted Mrs. Creech and more than 25 classmates for lunch in the media center. Some of the couples were high school sweethearts, married for more than 65 years after meeting at Memorial. They talked about playing football and wearing leather helmets while playing for Coach Ping. They were all grateful for the education they received at Memorial.
When I heard Mrs. Creech had passed on September 28, 2021, I remembered that she had called me in March 2020 and she wanted to share some Memorial history with me. I asked if I could record it. I still have the recording, and I promised her I would do a write up as we wrapped up our call.
Joan Hayes and her four sisters all graduated from Memorial when tuition was $25. Her four sisters all married Memorial graduates, but Joan married Fred Creech, a Bosse graduate she met at Evansville College. Fred, in a very short time, would become one of Memorial’s biggest supporters assisting wherever he was needed.
Joan and Fred had 11 children. They all were baptized at and graduated from St. Ben’s, and all are Memorial graduates. Liz was in my class, so I knew the first four Creech’s (Becky, Fred, Liz, and Mike) and met most of the others over the years.
You could hear the pride in her voice when she told me that she has had a child, grandchild, or great grandchild
at Memorial every year since 1964. With grandchildren currently students, this streak will reach 60 years and beyond.
That day we talked for almost 20 minutes as I asked her questions, and she recalled her time at Memorial, her dad who was the manager at Woolworth’s on Main, the neighborhood around Memorial, buying penny candy at the neighborhood market and being able to “see the boys” when the girls went downstairs for biology class. I sent the recording to her family when I heard she had passed so they could hear her voice again.
Memorial lost a great alumni, friend, and supporter in September. The Creechs may be the last family of 11 to have all graduated from Memorial, but not the last family that will pass down the tradition of a Catholic education to their future generations. Rest in peace Joan.

IN MEMORIAM: SANDY MORRIS
BY: KEVIN GRIES AND KRISTIN KOEHLSandy Morris passed away on Sept. 24, 2021. She served as a Theology teacher at Reitz Memorial before retiring in 2020. Sandy graduated from Memorial in 1965 and taught at Resurrection Catholic School before coming to Memorial. Sandy enjoyed scrapbooking, traveling, and attending a Florida State football game each year with her son, Rich. She had an unmistakable love for the Tigers during her time at Memorial that you could sense by simply being around her, and especially by walking into her room. With shelves filled with tiger
collectibles, you knew that she had a passion for this school and, most notably, a passion for teaching the faith to her students. She left a mark on all of those whom she taught. As a Memorial alum, Sandy knew well the legacy of which she was a part. She challenged students to grow in their relationship with the Lord, and she was always a great helping hand with her colleagues. The news of her passing saddened our community, but we have hope that Sandy is free now from the pains of this world and truly living with the love the Father had prepared for her in heaven.
