Grant Patrol brings good news donnie.bryant@empiretribune.com

The Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol has nothing on the Stephenville ISD Education Foundation when delivering good news. District leaders and foundation board members completed that pleasant task Wednesday to several teacher at campuses with all the fanfare displayed in those cheesy Clearing House commercials. With clappers, maracas, balloons and a giant blank check, the foundation’s Grant Patrol burst into classrooms and announced the awarding of funds to several different applicants who had requested money to use for innovative projects in their classes. Board members Rusty Freed, Wendell Hollingsworth, Emily Roberson, Jennifer Muncey and Angela Haynes joined the Education Foundation’s Executive Director Mindy Wooley in giving the unexpected updates to teachers. Also in on the fun were assistant superintendents Kathy Ray and Deborah Hummel. The first announcement was made at Gilbert Elementary School where fifth grade math teachers, Vickie Mabry, Paige Castleberry and Meredith Aguilar received the See GRANT on Page 2

It seems the champions are at it yet again. Stephenville High School received recognition Monday for its work in promoting ACT assessments among its students and furthering their success on the test. The Texas ACT Council awarding SHS with the 2012 College Readiness Award is a non-profit organization of educators who serve as advisers to ACT, Inc. The council stated it wanted to recognize high schools that have encouraged students to prepare for college, taking steps to ensure an increase in scores on the test as well as the number of students See HONOR on Page 2

Tarleton’s Welcome Center is the university’s new ‘front door’ BY JESSIE HORTON

jessie.horton@empiretribune.com

Tarleton State University opened its new “front door” Tuesday with the grand opening of the Welcome Center. The university calls its welcome center the front door of the school because it is the first place prospective students see when they visit the campus, said Joe Feist, media relations manager. The center, which is housed in the old nursing building at the corner of Washington Street and McIlhaney Avenue, has been remodeled and features historical exhibits, offices, a computer room and rooms to show videos to prospective students and their parents. Work began on the center last year and was recently completed. The university held the grand opening just days after Tarleton’s Alumni Association celebrated its 100th Homecoming. The old nursing building was

originally the University Health Center, then became the nursing building in 1978. However, after the opening of the new nursing building on the northwest side of the Stephenville campus in 2011, the building sat empty until remodeling began late last year. Laurie Gaiser, director of school relations/welcome center, was quoted in the university’s magazine as saying, “We were very excited to move into our current officers (in the Tarleton Center) about six years ago. But in the last three years our tour numbers have increased significantly, and our current space is no longer large enough for our purposes.” She went on to say the university has seen an increase of about 45 percent this year and a 162 percent increase in regular campus and group tours over the two preceding years.
