hen you think quality healthcare in Stephenville, you think SMSC – a facility that began with eleven-rooms in the late 1920’s and doubled in size twice by 1935. In 1978, eight physicians built the current clinic building and relocated their practice to 150 River North Blvd. Since moving to it’s new location, the clinic has had two expansions, tripled the number of physicians, and employs three mid-level practitioners who provide: Women’s Health Services, Nursing Home Resident Care, and Family Practice / Pediatrics. Also on staff is a Speech Pathologist. SMSC’s Women’s Health Center, built in 1999, houses their OB/GYN services. Expectant mothers are delighted with their dedicated 3D ultrasound equipment and their modern facility. Community Health Clinic is also located in this facility. Community Health Clinic is a familyoriented clinic that provides health services for people of all ages including: chronic and acute visits, Texas Health Steps, family planning, obstetrical care and breast exams. CHC also offers an

Extended Hours Clinic from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday in case one of the kids comes home from school not feeling well, no appointment is necessary. SMSC also offers comprehensive Laboratory and Radiology services. The Laboratory is certified by the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation and the Radiology Department is certified by the State of Texas. Laboratory services include chemistry, hematology, flu tests, renal function, hepatic function and drug screen collections. Radiology services include digital mammography, sonograms, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, nuclear medicine tests, bone mass density tests, and breast biopsy examination. River North Pharmacy, a full-service pharmacy, is also located in the main building of SMSC. The pharmacy provides fast, friendly and convenient service. See the doctor at SMSC and before you leave the building, stop in at RNP and pick up your medications! Another new exciting feature for SMSC patients is the Electronic Health Record. The EHR automates access to information

and has the ability to support other care-related activities through various interfaces. EHR’s strengthen the relationship between patients and clinicians. With its rich history in Stephenville, SMSC is involved in the community and supports activities that promote community health and well-being. SMSC hosts an annual Children’s Health Fair, conducts sports physicals for local youth and offers men’s and women’s health seminars. Celebrates 85th anniversary

S

TEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – For 85 years, Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville has been caring for patients during all phases of their lives. In 2011, the hospital proudly celebrated its 85th year of service to the Erath County area. The hospital began in the “Langdon Hotel” in 1926 by Dr. J.C. Terrell. By September 1926, Carl Phillips began working at the hospital as an orderly, one of the first employees outside of the Terrell family. He continued working at the hospital until 1993 and immediately upon retiring returned as a volunteer until his death in 2006. His legacy lives on today with a scholarship fund to help high school graduates attend college. “Carl is one shining example of the long-time employees and physicians on the medical staff at Texas Health Stephenville,” said Christopher Leu, hospital president. “For hospitals in communities like Stephenville, our employees and our patients who rely on the hospital are the backbone of a vital community service. We are honored to care for generations of Erath County families and look forward to doing so for many more years.” From its early roots in the hotel, the hospital quickly needed room to grow and within a year had moved into the present location. First, 11 beds were built along with an operating room, office and admissions area. Then, another 11 beds were added. In the 1970s, the hospital grew to its current 98-beds and twostory facility. But it wasn’t time to stop growing. In the 1990s the surgery department expanded and the women’s services area was renovated. By the 2000s, new services such as the sleep lab and wound care came on board and the lab and radiology departments were expanded. Today, the hospital is finishing renovations of the inpatient medical/surgical unit rooms. And it’s not just the physical changes to the building either. Technology has evolved too. The technological advancements have allowed the hospital to offer many more procedures on an outpatient basis. Surgeries often require a shorter stay and new medical imaging techniques like digital mammography can help catch breast cancer early. The hospital also has invested in an electronic health record, which helps caregivers seamlessly and securely access a patient’s medical record. Having the records electronically also can help decrease duplicate testing and assists caregivers in an emergency, such as if a heart attack or stroke patient needs to be transferred to another facility. Throughout the hospital’s existence it has remained a partner with the community. Texas Health Stephenville often holds community education events such as car seat check days, health screening events in the fall and spring to benefit area high school programs, regular blood drives and periodic lunch and learn education events. Texas Health Stephenville also serves

as a training facility for Tarleton State University nursing students. We thank the community for its long-time support of Texas Health Stephenville,” Leu said. “Community hospitals simply can’t exist without the support of their local community and for that we are truly grateful. We will continue to look for new services and community benefits we can offer to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve.” For more information, visit www.TexasHealth.org/ Stephenville. Also, information about the hospital can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ TexasHealthStephenville . arleton State University

Tarleton State University has been a vital part of Stephenville and Erath County since its founding as a small liberal arts institution in 1899. The school became a member of The Texas A&M University System in 1917 and gained status as a university in 1973. Over time, Tarleton has evolved into a near-perfect model of size, scope and affordability. It offers the value of an A&M System degree with its own brand of personal attention, individual opportunities, history, traditions and community. Located in the heart of Stephenville and encompassing a 173-acre main campus, Tarleton is one of the best university values in Texas and the perfect place for students to thrive. Enrollment, which will approach 10,000 this fall, is made up of students from 220 Texas counties as well as 43 states and 20 foreign countries. Tarleton boasts a faculty of about 575 teaching professionals in five academic colleges: Liberal and Fine Arts, Business Administration, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Science and Technology, and Education. In addition, the College of Graduate Studies offers both teaching and research-based master’s degrees. The university continues to break new ground in many academic arenas, including water quality and environmental sciences. Tarleton offers the only bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering in Texas, and one of only four undergraduate hydrology-water resources programs in the United States. The Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research (TIAER) on the Tarleton campus also plays a national leadership role in issues related to water quality, and the university is continuing to integrate programs and resources

to become a national leader in the environmental sciences. For 113 years, Tarleton’s rich history, traditions and legends have resided in the hearts of students and alumni, linking generations together. Tarleton is the largest non-land grant agricultural university in the nation and offers the resources of a major public university, including 64 undergraduate degrees, 22 graduate degrees and a doctorate in education. In addition to cutting-edge academic facilities and faculty experts with extensive university and industry experience, Tarleton offers the personal attention, warmth and faculty interaction expected from a smaller college. Expansion has defined Tarleton’s campus activity in recent years. A 70,000-square-foot sports recreation center opened in 2007, complete with an indoor track and a gymnasium, and a 42,000-square-foot dining facility opened in 2008. Other recent additions include a $23.4 million, state-of-the-art nursing building, opened in February 2011, to help meet the growing demand for health care professionals. In May 2011, Tarleton celebrated the completion of the Southwest Regional Dairy Center, which is the only technologically up-to-date dairy research center in the southwest U.S. and one of only four modern university dairies in the country. And in June, Tarleton’s Welcome Center, a resource for prospective students, moved into a new facility to accommodate increased interest by prospective students. Tarleton has extended its reach beyond Stephenville and is rapidly expanding undergraduate and graduate programs online and in the classroom, in Waco, Midlothian, Weatherford and the Southwest Metroplex Center in Fort Worth.

Stephenville Sports

By Brad Keith There are fewer things Erath County residents love more than football, and that begins with the Stephenville Yellow Jackets. High school football is king in Texas, and the Yellow Jackets are the pick to be kings of Class 3A this fall after being ranked No. 1 in both the coaches poll and staff poll in the 2012 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine. Stephenville has waited 13 years for its fifth state title, and fans are chomping at the bit with the new season on the horizon. But Yellow Jacket football - which has made three 4A quarterfinal appearances under head coach Joe Gillespie - is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to SHS athletics. The volleyball and basketball programs also figure to be heavyweights. Head coach Fran Metzger led the Honeybees to the 4A state title in 2003 and hasn’t missed the playoffs since. Under the direction of Alan Thorpe, the girls basketball team has reached three straight 4A Region I quarterfinals. The boys team made the playoffs in 2011 and just missed this spring. In baseball, Stephenville has made three playoff trips the last four years with two of those journeys - 2009 and 2012 - stretching all the way to the regional quarterfinals.

The 2012 Yellow Jackets - under second-year head man James Boxley - were finally eliminated in a tough three-game series by eventual state finalist Cleburne. The boys and girls track and field programs will be on solid footing in 3A, with the girls expected to contend for the Region I team title. The Honeybees follow the lead of head coach and 2012 Tom Landry Award recipient Mike Copeland with the boys being led by Kreg Kimple. Another program on the rise has been Honeybee softball. Stephenville reached the playoffs for the first two times in the history of the program in 2011 and 2012, and head coach Rus Mayes will lead them against 3A teams in his second season at the helm. Golf, tennis and powerlifting also keep student-athletes busy, and Stephenville had athletes advance to regionals in both golf and powerlifting in 2012. The Yellow Jackets have one state team title to their credit in powerlifting. A drop in classification means Stephenville’s long successful 4A programs will be hyped - and targeted by opponents - like never before. As foes try to murky the 3A waters that lie ahead, the Jackets and Honeybees - and their droves of fans - focus on the big prize - bringing state titles home to the City of Champions.

City & Park Amenities The city of Stephenville works hard to provide residents and visitors with a respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. From a recently constructed hike and bike trail and sparkling water attraction to two inviting parks and a slew of year-round league events, the city is indeed a great place to raise a family and a good place to visit.

Bosque River Trail

On the west side of Graham Street bridge at Stephenville City Park, the Bosque River Trail invites walkers, hikers and bikers to enjoy 8,000 linear feet - about 1.5 miles - of pristine pathway that runs along the north bank of the Bosque River. River views, wooded areas and sightings of native wildlife remind residents and guests that the city is nestled in the heart of rural America while connections to City Park, downtown and the Stephenville Historical Museum give a peek at other attractions. The trail includes bike storage, benches, lighting, trash receptacles, rest stops, natural landscaping and the opportunity to view turkeys, opossum, raccoons, armadillos, birds and even deer along the trail. It is also within close access to hotels, restaurants and shopping.

Splashville

Spashville Water Park, located at 850 S. Graham Street within City Park, offers residents a summer retreat close to home while at the same time beckoning visitors of all ages to dive into the fun. The park features a splash and zero entry area for small children with features like water bugs, cannons, tipping buckets, waterfalls and a three-foot slide. The larger, four-foot deep pool features 16 and 8-foot slides, lily pad walkway and a 275-foot lazy river. Families can dive into a full-day of fun without worrying about missing snack time as an onsite concession stand offers a variety of treats. In addition to open swimming, the facility hosts swimming lessons, water fitness classes, private parties and more. The water park opens in late May and closes in late August every year.

Stephenville Optimist/Jaycee Park

Located at the intersection of Harbin Drive and Lingleville Road, the parks features a jogging/walking track, baseball practice field, basketball court, picnic area and pavilion. Recent upgrades to the park include shaded and fenced play structures allowing children to play in a safe, secure environment.

City Park

Lighted softball and little league fields, tennis and horseshoe courts, shaded RV hook-ups, playgrounds, soccer fields, a shaded, winding walking trail and more await at Stephenville City Park. Stephenville Park and Recreation Department offices are

located in the recreation hall at 378 W. Long where residents can find more information on city leagues, such as softball and baseball, soccer, basketball and information on karate, dance classes and more. SPARD also welcomes private and community events to its two pavilions, Birdsong Amphitheater, Century Park Gazebo and encourages city residents and visitors to cast a line into the Bosque River or feed the ducks and geese resting on its banks.

Enjoy some of the best hunting and fishing Texas has to offer

It’s easy to obtain a hunting or fishing license in Texas. Recreational hunting and fishing licenses and stamp endorsements are available at approximately 2,000 locations throughout the state in addition to TPWD offices and parks. These locations include sporting goods stores, gun shops, department stores, discount stores, bait and tackle shops, grocery stores, and many other types of stores. Licenses expire every year on Aug. 31. There is an exception with fishing licenses, which for a few dollars more, will expire one year from date of purchase. For more information about hunting or fishing in Texas, contact local Game Warden Zachary Havens (254) 396-1747 or visit www.tpwd.state.tx.us.
