tephenville is often called the Cowboy Capital of the World and the City of Champions and has been listed as one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America. But perhaps it is its status as a youth-friendly college town surrounded by picturesque little burgs with their own pleasant highlights that gives the ‘Ville its own special flavor. Although agriculture may be a chief draw to the town, industry is also a force to be considered. Some half dozen manufacturers employ vast numbers of Stephenville’s residents, including Schreiber Foods, FMC Fluid Control and EGS Electrical. Conveniently located shops and grocery stores make for an easy day of consumer therapy. And there is a host of restaurants to choose from, sure to satisfy any culinary yen. Another Stephenville lure is the highly respected Tarleton State University. Established in 1899, Tarleton joined forces 4
with the Texas A&M University System in 1917. With the main campus spanning nearly 170 acres, the institution boasts state of the art educational opportunities, including a premiere nursing school facility and program and a three story science building with the A&M System’s first planetarium and observatory. Over 90 different majors are offered at Tarleton at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels. For those craving a bit of big city fun, a drive of less than an hour and a half will land you in the middle of Fort Worth – no stranger to the world of cowboys and rodeos itself. Shopping, fine dining and cultural offerings suited for every taste are easily accessible in its downtown district. Stephenville is sure to make any visitor or newly settled denizen feel welcome and entertained. It is a safe place to raise a family and an inviting locale for a short stay. Its rich cultural heritage coupled with an eye to future economic development makes the community an appealing spot to sit a spell. www.yourstephenvilletx.com

Yes, we really are the Cowboy Capital of the World! Our statistics prove that Stephenville really can boast ‘more professional cowboys per square foot than anywhere else in the world!’ We haven’t found anyone that can compete with these numbers: July Danley [President/CEO, Stephenville Chamber of Commerce] The Stephenville area also boasts over 150 PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) Members living within a 50 mile radius. According to the United States Team Roping Championships (USTRC), there are over 2,500 USTRC members living within a 60 mile radius of Stephenville with 75 of those being professional level team ropers! WOW!! And when you add all the NCHA (National Cutting Horse Association), AQHA (American Quarter Horse Association), WPRA (Women’s Professional Rodeo Association) and other association members, the list just gets longer and longer. Many of these cowboys and cowgirls were born and raised in the Stephenville area. Others got here as fast as they could to enjoy the plethora of events, practice opportunities, and exceptional quality of life our area has to offer. Tarleton State University has the largest collegiate rodeo program in the nation with over 100 students coming from 6
16 PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) World Champions 57 PRCA World Titles (including 3 All-Around Champs) 3 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) World Champions 45 NFR (National Finals Rodeo) Qualifiers 6 Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Inductees 5 National Cowboy Museum Rodeo Hall of Fame Inductees 14 Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame Inductees all over the country to Stephenville where they can train with the best of the best. Upon college graduation, many of these rodeo athletes decide to make the Cowboy Capital their permanent home. Competitors from all over the world come to Lone Star Arena, an equine event facility just outside the Stephenville city limits, for a host of local, regional and national events including barrel races, calf ropings, team ropings, bull ridings, reinings, cuttings, horse shows, mounted shooting competitions and more! Each year, the last week in September leading up to the Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo is proclaimed ‘Rodeo Heritage Week’ to recognize and celebrate the many outstanding cowboys and cowgirls that have brought worldwide acclaim to the Stephenville area. Events that will be held during Rodeo Heritage Week include a county team roping, golf tournament, rodeo queen contest, parade, concert, western art exhibit and more. www.yourstephenvilletx.com

tarleton state university
T
arleton State University has been a vital part of Stephenville and Erath County since its founding as a small liberal arts institution in 1899. The school became a member of The Texas A&M University System in 1917 and gained status as a university in 1973. Over time, Tarleton has evolved into a nearperfect model of size, scope and affordability. It offers the value of an A&M System degree with its own brand of personal attention, individual opportunities, history, traditions and community. Located in the heart of Stephenville and encompassing a 173-acre main campus, Tarleton is one of the best university values in Texas and the perfect place for students to thrive. Enrollment, which surpassed 10,000 last year, is made up of students from across
Texas and more than 40 states and 20 foreign countries. Tarleton boasts a faculty of about 570 teaching professionals in five academic colleges: Liberal and Fine Arts, Business Administration, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Science and Technology, and Education. In addition, the College of Graduate Studies offers both teaching and researchbased master’s degrees. The university continues to break new ground in many academic arenas, including water quality and environmental sciences. Tarleton offers the only bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering in Texas, and one of only four undergraduate hydrology-water resources programs in the United States. The Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research (TIAER) on the Tarleton campus
also plays a national leadership role in issues related to water quality, and the university is continuing to integrate programs and resources to become a national leader in the environmental sciences. For 114 years, Tarleton’s rich history, traditions and legends have resided in the hearts of students and alumni, linking generations together. Tarleton is the largest non-land grant agricultural university in the nation and offers the resources of a major public university. In addition to cuttingedge academic facilities and faculty experts with extensive university and industry experience, Tarleton offers the personal attention, warmth and faculty interaction expected from a smaller college. Expansion has defined Tarleton’s campus activity in recent years. A 70,000-squarefoot sports recreation
center opened in 2007, complete with an indoor track and a gymnasium, and a 42,000-squarefoot dining facility opened in 2008. Other recent additions include a $23.4 million, stateof-the-art nursing building, opened in February 2011, to help meet the growing demand for health care professionals. In May 2011, Tarleton celebrated the completion of the Southwest Regional Dairy Center, which is the only technologically up-to-date dairy research center in the southwest U.S. and one of only four modern university dairies in the country. Tarleton has extended its reach beyond Stephenville and is rapidly expanding undergraduate and graduate programs online and in the classroom, in Waco, Midlothian, Weatherford and the Southwest Metroplex Center in Fort Worth.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Stephenville delivers nationally recognized, award-winning care close to home
F
or more than 80 years, Texas Health Stephenville has offered compassionate care, respect and commitment and, in the last 30, has been nurtured by one of the strongest hospital systems in Texas. Combined with a dedication to delivering excellence, the hospital has grown to a 98-bed, full-service acute-care facility with 250 employees and 70 physicians on the medical staff. Despite the growth in size, resources and capabilities, the hospital remains focused on providing personalized care with a smile and treating each patient and family member with respect and compassion. “Our goal is to deliver highquality care that spans across a broad range of services and specialties all in a convenient setting,” said Christopher Leu, president at Texas Health Stephenville. “We work closely with our medical staff to strive to provide the best care possible to the residents in the communities we serve.” In the last year alone, Texas Health Stephenville received national accreditation as a Level IV Trauma Center, Cycle III Chest Pain Center and was recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. The hospital also received top rankings from the Leapfrog Group and Premier
Healthcare Alliance-national programs aimed at continuously improving the quality and safety standards at member facilitiesfor achieving high-quality, evidence-based care. In addition to ensuring quality and safety standards for patients, the hospital also achieved the Pathway to Excellence designation, which recognizes health care organizations that create a work environment that supports nurses, to ensure the standards of their staff are being met as well. “Fostering a supporting environment for our nurses is vital to the care we provide our patients, said Cindy McCarthy, DNP,M.B.A.,M.H.A., B.S.N., CEN, chief nursing officer at Texas Health Stephenville. “We support them and supply resources they need to deliver competent and compassionate care to our patients that has been recognized in the awards we’ve obtained.” Combining safety and quality with advanced technology and skilled caregivers close to home is what makes Texas Health Stephenville the hospital of choice for many Stephenville, Erath and surrounding County patients and families. The hospital offers a diverse medical staff with many services such as surgical services, women’s and infant’s services, advanced diagnostic imaging, sleep lab and wound
care services in a location that reduces travel time for care and for family and friends to provide support during recovery. However, as an affiliate of Texas Health Resources, the largest faithbased, nonprofit health care system in North Texas in terms of patients served, Texas Health Stephenville can also draw on the system’s wide-ranging care resources if patients need to be transferred to a larger facility for complex medical situations. “Having access to a broad range of medical services and specialties gives the community assurance that we are committed to achieving the best outcome regardless of the situation,” Leu said. For more information on hospital services, visit www.TexasHealth.org/Stephenville.
Texas Health Resources is one of the largest faith-based, nonprofit health systems in the United States. The health system includes 25 acute care and short-stay hospitals that are owned, operated, joint-ventured or affiliated with Texas Health Resources. It includes the Texas Health Presbyterian, Texas Health Arlington Memorial and Texas Health Harris Methodist hospitals, Huguley Memorial Medical Center, Texas Health Physicians Group, outpatient facilities, behavioral health and home health, preventive and fitness services, and an organization for medical research and education. stephenville medical & Surgical center Welcome to Stephenville, Texas, City of Champions and home of Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic (formerly Stephenville Hospital and Clinic), voted Best Clinic in 2012 and 2013 by the residents of Erath County. As pioneers of medicine in Erath County, the physicians of Stephenville Hospital & Clinic realized that bringing doctors from different specialties together with significant diagnostic services would be an efficient way to provide comprehensive care to this community, cultivate long-term patient relationships, and position medical professionals to provide optimal care for their patients. Through the years, SMSC has done just that, and in 2014 we will celebrate our 85th year of service! When you think quality healthcare in Stephenville, you think SMSC – a facility that began with elevenrooms in the Langdon Hotel in 1929 and doubled in size twice by 1935. In 1978, eight physicians built the current clinic building and relocated their practice to 150 River North Blvd. Since moving to its new location, the clinic has had two expansions, tripled the number of physicians, and also employs three mid-level practitioners who provide: Women’s Health Services, Nursing Home Resident Care, and Family Practice / Pediatrics. Also on staff is a Speech Pathologist. SMSC’s Women’s Health Center, built in 1999, houses our OB/GYN services. Expectant mothers are delighted with our dedicated 3D ultrasound equipment and our modern facility. Community Health Clinic is also located in this facility.
Community Health Clinic is a family-oriented clinic that provides health services for people of all ages including: chronic and acute visits, Texas Health Steps, Family Planning, obstetrical care and breast exams. CHC also offers an Extended Hours Clinic from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday in case one of the kids comes home from school not feeling well; no appointment is necessary. SMSC also offers comprehensive Laboratory and Radiology services. The Laboratory is certified by the Commission on Office Laboratory Accreditation and the Radiology Department is certified by the State of Texas. Laboratory services
include chemistry, hematology, flu tests, renal function, hepatic function and drug screen collections. Radiology services include digital mammography, sonograms, fluoroscopy, MRI, nuclear medicine tests, bone mass density tests, and breast biopsy examination. River North Pharmacy, a full-service pharmacy, is also located in the main building of SMSC. The pharmacy provides fast, friendly and convenient service. See your doctor at SMSC and before you leave the building, stop in at RNP and pick up your prescriptions! SMSC continues to cultivate strong relationships in the community by supporting activities that
promote community health and well-being. SMSC hosts a free annual Community Health Fair, conducts sports physicals for local youth and offers men’s and women’s health seminars. SMSC also participates in local activities such as the Optimist Auction and Kiwanis Firecracker 100 Bicycle Race which both raise money to support area youth. SMSC has an active Relay for Life team and an annual United Way campaign for its employees. We are a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Stephenville Optimist Club. Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic, from generation to generation, caring for your family.

One can take in a wine-tasting at Bluff Dale Vineyards, feast on a sumptuous meal at gourmet chef Curren Dodd’s Let’s Eat or even visit a lavender farm. For those with a hearty American appetite, a stop by the Chuckwagon Steakhouse might be in order. It is estimated that no less than six tons of beef and catfish are prepared in the restaurant’s kitchen each year. For after-dinner entertainment, a stop by the Greenwood Saloon might be just the right way to end an evening. Live music and a jukebox makes the place a natural for dancing.
