The Day of the Seafarer, which is one of the annual United Nations observances, was first established in 2011 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Since then, the IMO has introduced different methods to tribute to the world’s mariners and thank them for their untold contributions to society and the global economy. The 2021 Day of the Seafarer campaign encourages governments to continue supporting seafarers during the pandemic and beyond, calling for an equitable fair future for seafarers. The campaign generates discussion on such issues as fair treatment of seafarers, working conditions, training, and safety.
