HEAdMASTER'S NOTEbook Summer months are always an enjoyable time for me. Many people are under the impression that we "close down" for the summer, when in fact, June, July and August can be our busiest months of the year. This past summer, for example, we had 220 students enrolled in the various academic, athletic and recreational programs which we offer. Planning for curriculum changes, class assignments and the master schedule for students are other major undertakings each summer. This year, our entire music curriculum for Pre-1st through 8th was restructured, the Advanced Placement Foreign Language Program was significantly expanded, instruction in Spanish was added in the beginning three grades, and a one semester course in Economics was added to the Upper School curriculum. But very importantly, the summer provides us a time when we can also concentrate on cleaning and painting of classrooms and hallways, repairing our total physical plant, maintaining our outdoor athletic facilities and completing major renovation projects. Certainly our most extensive project this past summer was the complete remodeling of our girls' locker room in the gym, but work in the athletic areas also included refinishing the two gym floors, resodding a portion of the girls' softball diamond and installing some new athletic equipment in the gym. Barker Hall is twenty-one years old now, and we celebrated its coming of age by completely repainting its hallways, stairways and some classroom areas, installing new carpeting in four classrooms and providing a number of new desks and chairs. The building today looks as good as it did the day it first opened. Similar work was completed in Hansen Hall and Beverly Art Center classroom and hallway areas. Several other projects completed deserve mention. A small but well equipped language lab or mini-recording studio has been developed for student use and our computer hardware has been upgraded and modernized. Overhead fans have been installed in the dining hall and new furniture was purchased for the student lounge. We have added a substantial amount of equipment for the science department, installed new table tops and chairs in the Middle School science room, and purchased several new pieces of audio-visual equipment for general school use. Our pride in the history, tradition and current programs of the Academy is well reflected by the attractive banners which have been hung on 111th Street. We hope you share this pride. As we begin our 117th year of operation, we covet your continued support in order to make your school the very best.

Sincerely,

DavidA. Jones Headmaster

ust a few weeks after Morgan Park Academy graduates and families were privileged to hear Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks recite some of her poetry during the Commencement Address, two Academy students along with other Illinois Poet Laureate Award winners recited their poetry to Brooks and their families at an awards reception held at the University of Chicago. Alexia Elizabeth Vanek and Tricia Hughes were among the 48 winners from over 2,000 Chicago students who entered the 20th annual poetry contest Brooks created the contest, in which she selects the winners and issues them $50 checks from her own pocket, because she wanted to encourage and reward "young people who have cared to deal with the langauge." "I reward freshness and honesty and daring to say something that would strike the poet's ear as strange and leave it on the page," said Brooks. "All of your life, poetry can be a nourishing gift to yourself, a performance to enjoy and change, an irresistible influence."

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

New heights were reached this summer at Morgan Park Academy with the largest summer school enrollment ever. As Mr. Jones detailed, several physical and academic improvements have occurred as well. As usual, our faculty members have pursued their interests in varied fashion; several have studied at universities including Harvard and Princeton. Chicago sports fans may have noted that Aaron Harris, our Upper School basketball coach, threw the winning basket for his team during the big three-on-three basketball tournament in July, entitling his team to travel to New York for the national tournament. Enrollment for the 1989-90 school year is up, with the largest freshman class in many a year. It seems that more and more families are discovering how strong Morgan Park Academy is academically. This fall, the board has decided to reinstate the school-wide Annual Fund Drive. One of the ways to fulfIll your annual giving contribution is by active participation in "Salute to Excellence '90" in March. More details are included elsewhere in the magazine. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, welcome back - we are looking forward to a banner year at the Academy!

Sincerely, G. Davis Boyd President, Board of Trustees

FROM THE ADVANCEMENT OFFICE

Steve Gerber

The 1988-89 academic year was a productive one for the Advancement Office. A special note of appreciation must go to the Alumni Association Officers and the alumni for sponsoring the Concorde Experience R~ffIe. Through their diligence and the support of members of the school community, Morgan Park Academy was successful in raising $50,000, making it possible for the Academy to recieve an additional $50,000 matching grant from a midwest foundation. The summer also brought a number of changes to the Advancement Office. After serving as a volunteer for a number of years and more recently serving as Director of Alumni Affairs, Tracy Heilman decided to return to her nursing career. Tracy is now working as a surgical nurse at Christ Community Hospital, enjoying the additional freedom which a part-time position allows. We owe Tracy a great deal for all of her work in organizing the Morgan Park Military Academy/ Morgan Park Academy Alumni Association. Her replacement, Caryn Cieplak, is now on board planning to work closely with alumni in the further development of alumni programs and events. We were also sorry to learn of the departure of Karen Ahearn as Director of Marketing and Public Relations. Karen is moving to Pittsburg, Kansas, to join her husband who accepted an administrative position with Pittsburg

State University. Karen's talents did not go unnoticed as she was quickly hired as a reporter for the Pittsburg Morning Sun. While at Morgan Park Academy, Karen was responsible for the production of The Academy Magazine. She also increased the institution's exposure through a continuous variety of news releases to local media. Weare pleased to annouce that Pamela Steinmetz has joined the Academy staff to continue this fine work. The entire staff of the Advancement Office is anticipating a productive year in meeting the challenges which lie ahead. In order to continue providing the caliber of academic excellence for which Morgan Park Academy is known, the Board of Trustees has approved a fund raising goal of $200,000. To be successful in reaching this goal, members of the school community must work together. Only through these efforts can Morgan Park Academy continue to attract and retain the most qualified and experienced faculty available and provide for enhanced academic experiences which are not found in other college preparatory programs. Finally, these donations will ensure that the Board of Trustees can continue to upgrade our physical plant, purchase new equipment and still keep tuition increases to a minimum. I am often asked the question, "How can I best help in supporting the school and in particular the Annual Fund?" The answer is not a simple one, as the support level of every family varies in their financial ability to support Morgan Park Academy. However, with the per family difference in the cost of educating a child and the cost of tuition at $500, we must reach this averageJor each family. There are a variety of ways members of the school community may accomplish this. One way is to participate in the "Salute To Excellence" Dinner and Auction to be held on March 3, 1990. By attending the event or purchasing raffle tickets, a family can help support the school. Another way is to sell $500 worth of ads for the evening's Ad Book. Finally, a donor may make a contribution to the Annual Fund

to the best of his ability. This fall there will be a phonathon to determine how each family desires to support the Annual Fund Drive. Volunteer parents and alumni will be making the calls. When you are contacted, please be generous in your support of academic excellence for our students. In the meantime, if you have any questions concerning the Annual Fund, please feel free to contact me. Steve Gerber Director of Institutional Advancement

FROM THE FATHERS' CLUB orange juice, coffee and milk. It will be provided free of charge to all Academy students and their families, as well as alumni. A nominal fee will be charged to all others in attendance. The Fathers' Club is also planning many other activities on that day and we are still working on the final details. I know you will enjoy the whole day, including the soccer games and the Homecoming dance that evening. As we get things finalized, the information will be sent to you, so you can plan your day . If you are not on our mailing list and you want further information, please call me at 737-9480 or the school at 881-6700.

As we start another school year, I hope that your summer was enjoyable, and that you are now ready and willing to work for a successful school year for your children and the school.

I know that we have just started the school year, but time goes by quickly. There is so much to be done to organize "Salute to Excellence '90," and we can certainly use your help. If you are willing to give some of your time to the project, please contact Mrs. Ugarte, the chairperson for "Salute," through the school.

I would like to remind the fathers who have not sent in their dues or questionnaire to please do so as soon as possible. Without your support, we cannot accomplish the things that we would like to do, both for our children and Morgan Park Academy.

I look forward to seeing old friends and to making new friends both at the Fathers' Club meetings and at the many activities throughout the year. Until then I remain,

The annual Pancake Breakfast will be held on Oct. 7, 1989 in Alumni Hall. There will be pancakes, sausage,

FROM THE MOTHERS' CLUB good and "socially satisfying" year. I have had the opportooity to talk with many moms over the summer who are willing to join the board as officers and room mothers and I'm encouraged by their enthusiasm and support The Mothers' and Fathers' Clubs are important links between parents and the school. TIle more time I spend at school, the more convinced I am that we have made the best choice for our children.

Linda Cuadros

The Mothers' Club of Morgan Park Academy has been very special to me. I began as a book store volooteer eight years ago and now I'm the president! This just proves that a lot of hard work and no "real" job can still get you to the top! We are looking forward to another

The new school year began with our Opening Day Coffee - a chance to talk with old friends, meet new ones, join the Mothers' Club, sign up to work in the book store etc. The joint Parents' Meeting, an evening for all parents, will be held in October. Our International Dinner in November is a wonderful opportunity to share delicious ethnic foods and relaxed conversation with other parents and faculty. December is busy and especially fun for everyone participating in the Children's Christmas Store and the Christmas Bazaar. I think I'll stop here and keep you curious and anxious to learn more! The children know the Mothers' Club as the "great party providers!" They work

SPORTS SHORTS Boys varsity tennis team members Michael Gersack and Nik Raj played an excellent doubles competition last spring, advancing to the Third Round of the Championship Bracket of the State Finals. It was a somewhat dramatic road to the finish for the MPA duo. In the First Round, Gersack and Raj triumphed over the doubles team from Marist (Chicago) in three sets. They , proceeded to play the Second Round against Champaign Central, losing the first set and winning the second. The third set was halted due to darkness with MPA down 1-4. The next day, they lost the first game against Champaign, only to win the next six games, capturing the third set and proceeded to the Third Round. In Third Round competition, they played the #1 seed out of 128 teams, losing the first two sets and finishing their season in the Fourth Round of Consolation 5-7, 6-7. Gersack and Raj hold the school record for the most points MPA has scored)n the State Tournament. The team finished in 4th place

Haldon Smith '49: A Life Journey Spanning Many Miles The first 25 years of Haldon Smith's life was similar to that of many other Morgan Park Military Academy graduates. He grew up less than a mile from MPMA, attended Clissold Grammar School, graduated from MPMA in 1949, attended college, served two years in the Naval Reserve, and then pursued a master's degree. Upon completion of his Master of Petroleum Engineering studies from the University of Tulsa in 1956, however, his life journey has taken him to 88 foreign countries. In fact, he has lived 27 of the last 30 years abroad. Haldon Smith is an international Petroleum Engineering Consultant. His work involves applying sound and engineering principles to oil and gas reservoirs. He performs hydrodynamic volume/metric studies, calculates the percentage of gas recovery, determines the economic life of reservoirs, and develops testing formats for reservoirs. He has lived for long periods of time in Trinidad, Venezuela, England, Denmark, France, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia and Australia. Recently, he worked in Pakistan for 100 days. Of course, through his extensive travels he has been acquainted with many interesting, unusual and even threatening experiences. Not only did he live in Venezuela during the revolution in the late '50s, but he worked not far from the Motilones Tribe who have killed people (including some Shell and

Exxon employees) with 7' long bows and arrows propelled from their feet. In Libya, he became familiar with troglodytes, cavemen who live underground year-round to escape the elements. It was also from Libya that his family was evacuated to Egypt during the revolution in 1967. Smith has also found great beauty in foreign countries. "Indonesia is the most brilliantly artistic and colorful country I've ever seen," he said. "The best thing I ever did is marry my Indonesian wife, Emmy," he said when asked about his greatest accomplishments in life. In addition to visiting nearly half of the countries in the world, Smith holds a 1976 patent in oil production. He is currently developing an invention for improved oil recovery, which he calls Tuiscovir, that he hopes to have patented in the future. He credits his schooling at MPMA 'as influencing his many successes by

instilling discipline, receiving excellent instruction in science, chemistry and physics, and enabling him to be accepted by a good college. Smith graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in the upper third of his class--at a time when "it was the toughest mineral engineering school in the world," "The training that affected my life the most was the way I learned to think at MPMA," said Smith. "You wouldn't believe the fuzzy thinking I run into around the world." His memories of MPMA also include Sunday parades, house parties, National Honor Society meetings (of which he served as president), Rifle Team meetings, and naturally--graduation day. In 1980, when he was in Chicago on business, he drove through the neighborhood to see his old stomping grounds. Smith's plans for the future include continuing his work as an international consultant, starting a business or businesses with his wife to prepare for his retirement years, improving his home, and possibly having children. There certainly seems to be many active and productive miles ahead on Haldon Smith's life journey.

In memory of Dan Haigh '34

Dan Haigh and wife Bette

Taps sounded for Dan Haigh this past spring. This was my friend Dan Haigh, a man I will remember with pride and gratitude. Back in 1982 at an Alumni Board meeting, a proposal was introduced to construct a memorial honoring the alumni who gave their lives defending our freedom. For two years, the project inched

toward reality. Then in 1984, Dan Haigh was appointed chairman of the Memorial Committee. A successful campaign to raise the necessary funds was initiated. Within weeks, drawings of the memorial were rendered, and the pouring of the foundation on the northeast rim of Jones Bowl soon followed. Research was conducted to insure against errors and omissions and a massive bronze plaque was commissioned to bear the names. The original lintel from Blake Hall, an early Academy building destroyed by fire in 1962, was to become the body of the memorial. In May 1985, under Dan's careful direction, this piece of history carved in granite was restored and prepared to accept its new role. The plaque was installed on June 7,1985, the day before commencement. Whenever I visit the Academy, I read those names. Thanks, Dan, for touching my heart in a very special way.

Robert F. Goss Jr. '63

Editor's Note: The memorial includes the name of Bob's father, Robert F. Goss Sr. '42, who was killed in Germany in September of 1944.
