British Design Morgan Furniture was established more than 70 years ago, we bought it nearly 23 years ago and have fully transformed the business to match our own and our clients’ expectations. Our original objective remains; to be a design led and customer focused designer and manufacturer able to provide outstanding quality of product, combined with exceptional value. We achieve this by attention to detail and complete control of the conceptual design, the engineering for manufacture and by making everything in our own factory in Hampshire. We look to integrity rather than fashion for contemporary, balanced and original expressions of form and function. This honesty takes shape through manufacturing processes that are uncompromisingly focused on quality, investing in our own products with an enduring sense of the passion and care that is the Morgan signature. This book is a celebration of the achievements of the Morgan Team. As our team has grown and strengthened in recent years, this too will be a milestone against which we measure the future and our plans to do more, better.

Morgan London Morgan London is a celebration of independent British artists and designers across different disciplines. Our Design Director Katerina, and Managing Director Rodney, believe that Britain is at the forefront of the art and design movement. Their passion for high quality design and inspiring art led to the creation of Morgan London, an initiative with which to promote this talent through a series of events. At the heart of Clerkenwell, Morgan London is a unique double height gallery space which lends itself perfectly to exhibitions, seminars and film screenings, all in the midst of our beautifully crafted furniture. As furniture designers we are constantly striving for the perfect balance of form and function; for an artist’s freedom of thought is imperative. During our first year we have showcased ‘Previously’, an exhibition of unseen works by Remi Rough. Also ‘Black Box Kaleidoscope’, an installation inspired by, and created for, our showroom, by David Shillinglaw.
In conjunction with our exhibitions we have curated displays featuring textiles by Kvadrat and lighting by Tom Raffield, Decode London, Tom Dixon and Rothschild & Bickers. In the future, we plan to build on existing relationships, increase collaborations with creative individuals and host a series of design relevant seminars. Founding director of Satellite Architects, Stewart Dodd held a drawing workshop at the showroom and demonstrated how he instills his passion for sketching in his students. Attendees of the workshop experienced the freedom of sketching both by hand and on iPad. We collaborated with Mehran Gharleghi from studio INTEGRATE on a 3D printed chair, constructed using a mathematical algorithm. This innovative design was launched during London Design Festival in September 2015.
“I’m not everyones’ cup of tea, but I’m somebody’s double expresso.” David Shillinglaw

“I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Morgan as they gave me time and space to fully realise my own ideas, while also creating links between what I do as a fine artist, and others in the design and furniture industries.
“I had numerous reasons for showing my work at Morgan. But one key factor was the people behind the space, who made me feel so welcome and seemed so kind that I simply couldn’t say no. It’s not often you get the opportunity to work with lovely people in a very cool central London space. so saying no just wasn’t an option for me. Having my artwork set within a beautiful homelike environment made perfect sense.”
“As Morgan provide such a high standard of design that fits so well across the hospitality industry spectrum; I thought a series of days spent looking at the worlds classic, architect designed, chairs from Jacobsen to the Eames’s, would be a great opportunity for the participants to understand contemporary chair design. Then to draw a piece of Morgan furniture and understand how the nature of chair design evolves over the decades was the order of the day.”
“From the first day I met Katerina, it felt like we had been working together for a long time. She is a great designer and supportive of new ideas. The Morgan team is friendly, thoughtful, resourceful, and fun to work with which is important to achieve the best result for creative projects under tight deadlines. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with Morgan.”
I was also excited to use the space to create a site specific installation which helped me develop my own practice and ideas, as well as displaying finished works of art.”

FX Drawing Competition We were proud to host the FX drawing competition private view at our Morgan London showroom. FX ran the competition with no rules, and so included isometric, 2 and 3 point perspective, descriptive sketches and indeed fine art. The variety of sketches and their subject matter was particularly exciting; from London landmarks to intricate portraits, it was clear to see that this competition was an enjoyable experience for all of the architects and designers involved.
Kvadrat Showroom Installation Featuring Kvadrat’s Divina, Clara, and Steelcut trio collections, our Dallington Street showroom was transformed by an array of bold fabric banners, which cascaded down the 5 metre wall providing a dramatic backdrop for our latest furniture collections. The installation featured a selection of our chairs upholstered in Kvadrat including the Lima lounge chair and Seville high back armchairs in eye-catching Coda and Divina. Also on display were lighting designs from Hand & Eye Studio and Rothschild & Bickers.

We believe in Hospitality What are the values of hospitality? How do we adopt these values in all our products and interiors? We pride ourselves in combining different grades of foam to create the right composition of comfort for every seat and back. We know how important it is to create room sets, or groups from a similar family of products.
At Morgan we have over 20 years experience in providing solutions for the hospitality industry. We aim to understand the client’s brief, as well as the end user. We aim to supply furniture that is fit for purpose, offering comfort and longevity as well as design details that will enhance the space.
These values are now becoming an important part of workplace interiors. Meetings in informal settings, break out areas and relaxation areas, clients are looking for a mix of products that feature these values.
All our products are carefully designed to achieve the correct scale, for example small footprint where this is critical, large and modular pieces where the space is grander.
Morgan work closely with workplace designers and have developed products with the workplace aesthetic, combining it with our hospitality expertise.

Morgan Inspiration For any designer, the world is full of inspiration. Books, films, art, nature, fashion… are all contributors to this large mélange of images in our brain! - Katerina Zachariades There are six designers at Morgan and we all have our unique way of looking at the world and approaching design. We enjoy team collaboration and believe the group achieves more than the individual. Obviously, the idea comes from an individual, but then it is analysed, developed and refined by the team. We believe in care and originality in all we do. A passion for quality materials and considered design, coupled with our craftsmanship and investment in cutting edge manufacturing technologies, create our Inspired Furniture Collections.
12
We have developed product from all sorts of inspiration: Japanese bridges (Kyoto), arches (Lucca), quilted textiles (Ribb), and coloured stacked blocks (Manhattan)… As for colour mix, anything from pheasant’s feathers to 50’s dashboards! We look at today’s interiors and plan our collections as if we are designing the interior, looking to design that is of the moment and as we believe we would specify ourselves.
13
14
Morgan Studio A number of our Inspired Collections have been designed by the Morgan Studio team of five young and creative furniture designers. The design process is led by Katerina Zachariades and the product development achieved by a dedicated prototyping team. The total portfolio now represents one of the most popular choices of contemporary seating in the UK for interior designers and specifiers.

The Design Story We create and craft products that will bring lasting originality and quality to any environment for years to come and Morgan’s design team bring a distinctive perspective to each piece within every collection. With each of our collections we work hard to design a broad range of corresponding products and it is the skill with which these conflicting objectives are resolved that ensures the harmony and success of each product. Those all important issues of ergonomics and human factors are considered throughout the design process and our success is evident in the comfort and enduring quality of our chairs.
17
18
Prototyping
We create and craft products that will bring lasting originality and quality to any environment for years to come and Morgan’s design team brings a distinctive perspective to each piece within every collection. We have a dedicated team operating in the prototype studio, which draws in production members as needed and operates as a training environment for them. Working from fully detailed engineering drawings, frames are crafted for aesthetic, functional and manufacturing effectiveness. The composition of the CMHR Reflex foam is then developed to provide the ergonomic quality and comfort for which Morgan is renowned. Thereafter upholstery and stitching details are resolved. This is an iterative process that continues until the Design and Management Team are satisfied. All the specifications established are then drawn, detailed and photographed to ensure consistent manufacturing standards.
Prototyping can take between 2-6 months to get a final design result. There may be 3 different types of frame made, which show the progression stages to the final product.

Morgan is a passionate exponent of lean manufacture and, through its actions, clearly demonstrates how this approach delivers mutual benefits for company and customer. Significant reductions in waste have produced corresponding environmental gains and cost savings for the customer. Environmental We, at Morgan, have always been concerned with sustainability and the environmental impact of our activities, as well as our social responsibility to the wider community. We have the Environmental Management System ISO14001, which is the most effective tool for any company serious about minimising environmental risks, meeting legislative requirements and demonstrating corporate governance.
Our company gives consideration to designing furniture so as to reduce its overall environmental impact throughout it’s life cycle. We strive to reduce waste; all our wood offcuts are used to heat the factory and offices, foam waste is recycled to the suppliers who use it in chipfoam, and all fabric waste is donated to charities.
We lead in the principles of Lean Manufacture with its focus on the elimination of Eight Wastes, and this has been an extremely effective tool for improving our environmental performance, involving our team, and optimising efficiency in all our processes.
We source much of our timber from European and UK sustainable estates that are controlled with felling licenses and given PEFC/FSC certification. The logs are air dried, kilned and conditioned for between four months and two years, which produce high quality timber suitable for furniture making. Working with Morgan, our customers can be confident they are partnering a company fully committed and assessed to the environmental cause. As a company we are involved with local schools, colleges and universities nationally and are dedicated to investing in education and local charities.

The Brompton sofa has been designed as a contemporary piece of furniture with a traditional touch. Its square form is subtly rounded and the plain back is divided with a seam which enhances the lumbar support. Kyoto
Designed by Morgan Studio Inspired by Japanese gardens and bridges, this is a system of linear benches that interlock to create reception area seating. In Japanese gardens simplicity means the achievement of maximum effect with minimum means. Kyoto’s asymmetry creates the impression of it being natural, whilst the contrast creates tension between elements.
The 10 Kyoto compositions available can be specified in contrasting fabrics, with tables available in finishes from timber and laminate, to glass and Carrara marble; giving the designer the scope to compose a bold graphic statement or opt for a more tranquil tonal palette.
The Kyoto benches intersect at 90 and 110 degree angles to create asymmetric, dual height reception area seating compositions that, like the bridges they’re inspired by, encourage you to take a less direct route from A to B; pause, sit and take in your surroundings from a new perspective.
73
Lima
Designed by Katerina Zachariades
The Lima collection is light and playful. Dining as well as small lounge and large lounge chairs have a shaped seat cushion and timber back. Constructed in three elements, base, seat and back they offer the option of natural timber combined with a painted finish.

Finishes 1. Veneered MDF A timber veneer over high density MDF with an exposed MDF edge, which is stained to your specification and then finished with a clear severe rated dead matt lacquer. This is suitable for bar, lounge and reception areas or where occasional use occurs. We would not recommend this finish is specified in areas of heavy contract use where the table could be subject to mishandling, cigarette burns and marking. Where lighter timber polish colours of P30 Natural Beech or P54 Light Oak are specified, we recommend that solidwood lipping is also selected. 2. Realwood Laminate A natural timber laminate over high density MDF with an exposed MDF edge, stained to a selection of standard polish colours. Trade names include Woodlam, Oberflex, Abet and Formica Polyrey. This specification will provide the highest level of heat resistance, including cigarette burns and impact damage and is therefore ideal for heavy contract use, more formal dining and conference or function areas. As standard we provide this with a polished MDF edge profiled to your specification. Where lighter timber polish colours of P30 Natural Beech or P54 Light Oak are specified, we recommend that solidwood lipping is also selected. 3. Solidwood Lipping A timber veneer or laminate over high density MDF with a solid beech edge, which is stained to your polish colour specification and then finished with a clear severe rated lacquer. The solid timber edge provides a more robust protection against knocks and impact damage as well as giving the appearance of a solid timber top. The veneer or laminate is applied on top of the solidwood lipping. Our standard lipping is beech, but oak and walnut species are available upon request.
4. Glass Clear, sandblasted, back painted or patterned glass is used in some of our table designs. When inset in a timber frame, 6mm toughened glass is used. When bonded to a steel base then 10mm toughened glass is used.
Polish Colours
5. Bespoke We can offer other top finishes such as additional lay-on glass, mirrored or bronzed glass, as well as ‘picture frame’ tops with an inset of laminate, marble, stone, glass, linoleum or other sheet materials. These would require a separate bespoke quotation, please contact the Sales Office with your request.
P33 Dark Mahogany
6. Base finishes On chair and tables bases and any metal detailing on our products, for example foot rails, a variety of finishes are available. From Chrome, epoxy powder coated chrome and powder coated RAL colours, brushed stainless steel, brass and matt bronze, these finishes are available on a selection of our products. Should you wish to apply a bespoke finish, please do not hesitate to contact our Sales Office for further information.
