The National Trust and Morgan State University have partnered to develop a preservation plan that stewards the many historic buildings on campus, while planning wisely for the university’s future.

6 150TH ANNIVERSARY 2017
Founded in 1867 as one of the nation’s earliest institutions to offer post-secondary education for African Americans and the largest in the state of Maryland, Morgan State University’s urban campus has an impressive collection of historic buildings. The University’s varied built landscape now features 20 contributing structures—ranging from Classical and Italianate to Modern and Brutalist—eligible for listing on the National Register. Buildings on the campus were designed by pioneering and celebrated black architects such as Albert Cassell, Hilyard Robinson, Louis Fry, and Leon Bridges. “We have known of Morgan’s significance on the higher education stage for many years and now, as we prepare to celebrate our 150th anniversary, the world will know
“The National Trust believes Historically Black Colleges and Universities tell an important and often overlooked American story,” said Stephanie Meeks, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “We are proud to partner with Morgan State University– a nationally-recognized innovator and education leader– to demonstrate how the preservation of their remarkable older buildings can be a springboard for growth, rejuvenation, and revitalization.”
that, in fact, this university is a national treasure,” said David Wilson, president of Morgan State University. “We are very excited and honored by this designation from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In many ways, it is recognition of the value we have placed on caring for and preserving the history of the great Morgan State University.” Under the leadership of President David Wilson and Dean Akers

of the School of Architecture & Planning, the University has made positive strides to preserve portions of the campus, including the restoration of University Chapel, the only building individually listed on the National Register at present. In addition, Morgan State University is home to one of six HBCU accredited architecture programs and the only one actively seeking accreditation in historic preservation. This designation by the nation’s leading preservation organization recognizes Morgan State University’s historic significance as an HBCU and its status as a compelling example of the challenges that colleges across the country face in stewarding their historic buildings while redeveloping their historic campuses. As a National Treasure, Morgan State joins a growing portfolio of historic sites and marks the second HBCU, along with Howard University in Washington, D.C., where the National Trust for Historic Preservation is actively working. The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s dedicated involvement with America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities dates back to 1998 when HBCUs across the country made the America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list. Additionally, the National Trust has worked over the years with Congress to get Historic Preservation Funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities reauthorized— securing more than $61 million in the restoration of historic buildings on HBCU campuses.

n Sunday, April 30, 2017, President David Wilson hosted the Morgan State University Proclamation Ceremony, which noted prominent events and memorialized important sites in the development of the institution.
Alumni and current students united in front of Holmes Hall to mark the 150th anniversary of Morgan and to recognize the achievements of the nine men who founded the Centenary Biblical Institute as a training ground for the Methodist ministry in 1867. “Irepresentthefirstof theninestudentsintheinauguralclass of the Centenary Biblical Institute. Andrew Fitzgerald Mitchell STORY BY JEREMY COLLINS
Andrew Fitzgerald Mitchell is spirited, humble, and always thinking. Born March 2, 1994 in Memphis, Tennessee, Andrew is a Southerner and proud of it. If there was a contest for “Most Country Accent” on campus, he’d win. I’d known Andrew, or “Drew,” as many people called him, since before he campaigned for the position when he tapped my friends and I for advice on a poem he’d written for the campaign. Andrew played sports all his life and his passion for athletics is very apparent. From track, to basketball, and football he was involved in sports throughout his entire school career. This passion for sports and athletics was reflected in his unwavering school spirit. Andrew’s excitement for it caused quite the controversy before his reign as Mr. Morgan. He posted several tweets critical of school spirit on campus, saying online what most of us say to our peers in private (some of us say it online as well, however not all of us are Mr. Morgan). I
as of today, there are only 29 of us so I feel like I’m blessed and humbled to be amongst that great group of guys
remember that moment very well, mostly because I responded to Drew’s tweet with my own choice words before I knew him personally. The old tweets resurfaced not too long after the victory. When I asked Andrew abut the Twitter gaffes throughout his tenure, he was unapologetic, not in an arrogant way, but focused on the point he was trying to make more than the way he expressed it. Again, well-intentioned, he says he likes to get into people’s heads. Given the reaction, from the people - Morgan students, the Internet, and others - he got what he wanted, to excite people. The campaign season opened up Andrew to the broader campus scene outside of his personal bubble. “I never noticed the campus was that big until I ran...There’s so many different minds, interests, and piques between people.” The pageant was the most competitive part of the campaign. The competitive edge ran up through the last mile, when he woke up at 6 a.m. for voting going from dorm to dorm, building to building encouraging people to vote. Recalling the moment he won, he said he’d received a call from a woman who told him the results. Andrew was in the Rawlings Parking Lot, opening his car door, when he picked up the call. It was, expectedly, an anxious day full of different emotions. “I called my mom and let her know…I called my homies and let them know.” said Andrew. “I remember walking in circles saying ‘That’s crazy’.” Outside of the social media gaffes, the year was busy enough for the campus given the variety of sesquicentennial events. “I have a different respect for people that ran for Mr. Morgan and people that were Mr. Morgan, because right now, as of today, there are only 29 of us so I feel like I’m blessed and humbled to be amongst that great group of guys to represent the University and a platform larger than myself.”

OSCARS SHINE LIGHT ON BLACK-THEMED FILMS BY JANELLE FERGUSON
O
ver several months, reviews have saturated the depths of social media with the black films “Moonlight,” “Hidden Figures,” and “Fences.” Hollywood has taken a nod to these three films and acknowledged them at the 89th Academy Awards. The February 2017 recognition was unlike the previous years’ dearth of black nominees, which ignited the #OscarSoWhite criticism that went viral on social media.
NASA’s space program. The story focuses on Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson, women who surpassed any stereotypical cliche watermarked by Tyler Perry. It received positive feedback for displaying intelligent protagonists who are female and Black.
Not only was this the first time in the last two years where people of color were among Oscar nominees, but they were also mentioned in every acting and movie category. Denzel Washington was nominated for Best Actor leading role “Fences,” Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer both received nominations for Best Actress Supporting role in “Fences” and “Hidden Figures”, respectively, and Mahershala Ali received his Best Actor Supporting role in “Moonlight.” “It is great to see a year where more diversity is making it to the screen and hopefully it is a trend that we see more inclusions in the Oscar nominations,” said David Warfield, an assistant professor in the Screenwriting and Animation program on campus. “Moonlight” is a chapter based film that depicts the life and experiences of a Black male who is grappling with his own sexuality. Despite the stereotypical must of being raised by a single Black mother who is struggling with drug abuse, the film beautifully shines light on the topic of homosexuality; a sensitive, but taboo, subject in African-American culture. Director Barry Jenkins began “Moonlight” as a low-budget film of $5 million but ended up making more than three times that in the box office. “Hidden Figures” pushed the boundaries in both race and gender through an untold story about intelligent African-American women who served as key players in
MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
According to Warfield, “When it comes down to it, we know that the Hollywood system is male dominated and white dominated. Recently, there has been a lot of advances for women; especially at the studio executive level. There are women who now run 2 to 3 of the major studios.” The 2017 Oscars undeniably turned a leaf and shined a light on black film. “Moonlight” and “Fences” got their recognition thanks to Mahershala Ali and Viola Davis,. “I was very pleased to see that some exceptional writers, actors, and directors were recognized by their peers,” said writer, producer, and content creator, Tim Reid. “I’m not surprised because I know the work ethic of the directors and actors who put their work into ‘Moonlight’.”
T
he 2017 Oscars, according to Reid, was beyond race and age. It was based on quality of the work and everyone that was involved in the creative process could execute exceptional content that surpassed mediocrity. “I think Viola Davis said it better than anybody in an award show,” Reid proudly said in regards to Davis’ speech at the show. “‘The job of the people in our industry – the content creation and entertainment business – we have a unique opportunity more so than any profession, regardless of any race, creed or color; and that is to tell the stories of lives of people that have often been overlooked.’”

Take Back the Night BY CHLOE JOHNSON
Morgan State hosted its annual “Take Back the Night” event featuring a dramatic theater performance, poetry readings, speeches from advocates, and more! The event held was held in April, Sexual Awareness Month, shining light on the importance of reclaiming power over one’s own body and experiences. For many students, it was something that this campus needed to hear. “Take Back the Night” is a national movement for survivors of sexual violence. It occurs one day of every year, nationwide. In fact, the event was founded on college campuses. The affair included live short performances by WombWorks, a social change theater that connects and empowers people through performing arts. Kiara James, a junior, recalls her most memorable piece from “Take Back the Night.” “Every skit that they did literally happens every day, all the time.” Baltimore’s Youth Poet Laureate and member of the Class of 2018, Hannah Sawyerr composed the profoundly insightful and informative pledge that was recited during the event.

ames H. Gilliam, a prominent lawyer, philanthropist and humanitarian in Baltimore, once roamed the halls of Morgan State University’s College of Liberal Arts as an English major. Fifty years later, Morgan named the school in his honor.
Lanier explained. “I kept track of his [career] from a distance, and it was with great joy that whatever I saw him continuing to do, he continued to grow, and it was fascinating.” The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Dr. M’bare N’gom, also attended the event.
A portrait of Gilliam, who died in 2003, and a sign bearing the liberal arts college’s new name were unveiled above the main elevator in the lobby of Holmes Hall. Gilliam reached several milestones throughout his career. These included becoming the state of Delaware’s first black Cabinet secretary, working for the Beneficial Finance Corp. for two decades and founding the “Black Tie Affair,” a mentoring and networking event for young men. Gilliam also started an endowment at Morgan and a scholarship fund for African-American students at Columbia University, where he received his law degree in 1970. Among those who attended the naming ceremony were old friends of Gilliam’s, including NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Willie Lanier, Sr., who played nine years in the league with the Kansas City Chiefs and was a member of the Morgan graduating class of 1967 with Gilliam. “We were in the same classes together, and we had a chance to get to know one another, and what we both understood was that this university was going to allow us to compete anywhere, anytime,”
MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
“Mr. James H. Gilliam was a remarkable individual who remained committed to the well-being and academic success of students at Morgan State University,” he said. “This college will bear the Gilliam name with great pride and honor.” Members of the Gilliam family were also on hand, including Patrice Gilliam-Johnson, James Gilliam’s younger sister, who serves as the Secretary of Labor for the state of Delaware. Gilliam-Johnson, also a Morgan alum, credited Morgan for molding and transforming her family, particularly her brother. “He often talked about the Morgan experience; walking through Holmes Hall, pledging Kappa Alpha Psi [Fraternity] and all the things he would learn,” she said. “He’s the reason I came [to Morgan] behind him.” James Gilliam is the most recent member of his family to have a building on Morgan’s campus bear his name. The largest auditorium in the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center bears his parents’ names.

MISS MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Kayla Natae Lawrence STORY BY DEVON ASHBY
Morgan State University named a new Miss Morgan State to its royal court for the 2016-2017 academic school year. Kayla Natae Lawrence, a senior strategic communications major, succeeded Chelsea Johnson after Johnson resigned to pursue an internship at ESPN. Lawrence is from Elizabeth, New Jersey. She describes herself as a young, “vibrant-but-quiet, African-American girl,” who loves spending time with friends and family. Upon being named to the royal court for the first time in her collegiate career, she explained her reaction. She said she was scared, not of filling Johnson’s shoes, but of how the campus would react. “I didn’t run for Miss Morgan. I ran for Miss Senior; I sold myself to the senior class,” said Lawrence, who was replaced as Miss Senior by Lady Bears basketball player Ivy Harrington. “As far as the campus as a whole, I wasn’t sure if they would be receptive of me, but so far I’ve been shocked. It’s amazing to see how many people support you just by understanding the type of person you are.” However, while she questioned the outside reaction, the internal reaction was very smooth; Lawrence’s fellow court members welcomed her with open arms. “Because we already had our own culture with me as Miss Senior and Chelsea as Miss Morgan, it was a very easy transition because it wasn’t somebody new stepping into the leadership position,” she explained. “We had time over the summer to bond and understand our dynamics as a whole, so they’ve been pretty welcoming.” “I plan on actually showing [students] that once you tap into your power and let go of whatever fear that’s holding you back from doing what you truly want to do, everything else will follow and you’ll start reaping the benefits of your labor,” she concluded. “I’m living proof of that campaign, which I never thought would happen.”

STUDENT GOVERNMENT:
Dream Team Administration MSUnified Unity Rally, 2016
BY JEREMY COLLINS
This year’s student government administration (SGA) started with a radical dream and ended with a successful reality. The Dream Team Administration, led by Joy Jolene Griffin as President and Nadif Bracey as Vice-President, promoted an ambitious campaign with several points to their “political” agenda including creating a “Black Dollar” course, improving service at Montebello, and creating open meetings so that the student body is aware of what’s going on. President Wilson opened the school year with the administration, hosting a special dinner for SGA members on the lawn of the new Earl G. Graves Business Building. It was a special occasion, not only because of the event, but because it was the first event to be held in the space, making the Dream team Administration the group to inaugurate the use of the lawn for events. Speakers at the event made sure to note how just over fifty years ago, the students fought to desegregate the space and how now Morgan State University, a Historically Black institution, owns it. One of the bigger accomplishments was getting student center parties back on campus. One of the first legislative proposals, the Senate worked ambitiously to get parties back on campus working through security, logistical, and financial questions. Safety was one of the primary concerns as the University administration was concerned about guests to the campus that students bring. Accountability was crucial to getting done. Internally, the administration produced bi-weekly reports sent to all members of the SGA. Externally, the administration held several open meetings throughout both semesters in the USC Theatre. Another huge task was organizing the student involvement in the HBCU vs. Maryland Case, in which the state of Maryland was sued by a group consisting of alumni from the four HBCUs in Maryland citing incidents of program duplication, amongst other things, to segregate and divest from HBCUs. The Dream Team helped organize buses taking students back and forth. Brenda Alvarez, one of the students who went to the trial spoke on her

experience. “There were a lot of old people and young people...and some of old people were talking about how they like that the young people were there, because they were the ones protesting real hard.” The year wasn’t without controversy, however. The administration, and the University by extension, was met with a lot of online attention from across the world after inviting Jermaine Shoemake, otherwise known as Dr. Umar Johnson. Johnson, known as the self-appointed Prince of Pan-Afrikanism, talked about Black empowerment and self-sufficiency, but his homophobic and misogynist comments drew criticism from several students and community members, almost calling for the withdrawal of the invitation. The Dream Team administration was successful in representing the school as service members, going out to several local high schools and volunteering as well as giving lectures to high school SGAs. The administration formally ended with an end of the year banquet on May 2. Through hard work, accountability, and constant communication, the Dream Team, as they said, “turned dreams into reality.”

BALTIMORE’S 2ND YOUTH POET LAUREATE
Hannah Victoria Sawyerr STORY BY TIARA HOLLINS
H
annah Victoria Sawyerr was born April 26 1996, in North Brunswick, New Jersey. A first-generation American, she is the proud daughter of two fearless and brave Sierra Leone refugees. Hannah is well-known on campus for her affiliation with the MSUPoets, a relatively new organization she cofounded in 2014. The group is not just centered around poetry, but consists of vibrant and talented, poets, artists, and photographers. In February of 2016, she was crowned Baltimore’s Youth Poet Laureate, making her presence on campus even louder. Hannah competed against twelve poets for the title, and she won, making her the second Youth Poet Laureate winner and the first female. Since then she has spoken on panels about immigration and sexual assault as well as worked on poetry for her first book, “For Girls Growing into Their Hips”. She hopes the book will “feel like a hug” for every girl and woman who reads it; a confirmation that “we’re not alone in these experiences of ours.” Moreover, Hannah did not start out as a poet, but began journaling as a child. She wrote about silly things, as most children do - especially her desire to have a pink bicycle. However, this was only the beginning to how great a writer she would
eventually become. As an adult, she continues to journal - writing notes in her phone and combining what she has written into one body of work. In her eighth-grade writing class, she wrote her first spoken word piece about why she hated church. Ironically, she performed it at a church youth retreat. It is safe to say that this moment in her life is when she discovered her gift as a writer. She chose poetry as a means of expressing herself because of the cathartic emotion attached with it. The ability to take the thoughts that often parade one’s mind and then write them down on paper is very powerful. Poetry is her way of doing that; it is her way of releasing and talking about the things that bother her, the things she loves and the things that she finds joy in, “Not all poetry is sad poetry” she says. As a woman writer, Hannah is inspired by the works of Maya Angelou and Sandra Cisneros. One of her favorite poets currently, is Warsan Shire: A British-Somalin writer, poet and editor from Kenya. Hannah describes Warsan as a writer who is “creative with a young pen.” Like Warsan Shire, Hannah writes about womanhood, identity, love and family. In one poem in particular, “A Sierra Leonean Man’s Refuge,” Hannah talks about
MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
immigration and her experience being the daughter of a refugee. Growing up, she tried to fit in and embrace being American, which at times caused her to neglect her Sierra Leonean culture. By doing this, she felt left out because she was not a native Sierra Leonean and did not know the language very well. She recalls not wanting people to meet her dad because she didn’t want them to hear his accent. Now, she says the poem helped her to accept all parts of herself and have pride in where she comes from. When Hannah told her father she won, he was very happy for her. But Hannah, on the other hand, was in a state of disbelief and had no reaction at first. She didn’t feel she was undeserving of the prize, but wanted to make sure what she heard was real. She went to her mentor, Kenneth Morrison, and asked to see the results and tally her score herself. She needed visual proof that she’d won, but everyone around her never thought twice about her victory. Aside from teaching, Hannah sees herself giving a TED Talk about her life or an important experience that changed it. Though she is a firm believer in writing her dreams into being, it is safe to say she can speak this one into existence.

NEW ORGANIZATION SPOTLIGHT
Latino Student Association STORY BY CHLOE JOHNSON
This year we all warm-heartedly welcomed the Latino Student Association. Brenda Alvarez, member and vice president of LSA, reflected on how she created the groundwork along with three other distinctive young students. Alvarez had no complaints about being a minority organization at a predominantly African American institution. “It’s certainly like a different experience,” she said. According to the “Fall 2016 Student Demographics,” Latino students made up roughly 3% of the campus here at Morgan State University. The university has strived to make sure that the Latino Student Association felt as welcomed as possible. In fact, LSA has received support from Admissions, the International Affairs Office, and even President Wilson himself. Yet, the need for a student minority group on campus was clear. The university needed an organization for Latino students to sustain both individuality and diversity. The Latino Student Association is to be able to unify and protect Latino students while embracing the culture. Alvarez provided insight on the importance of LSA’s presence here on campus. “It is another facet of Baltimore and the U.S. It’s supposed to be informative while it’s being fun.” The Latino Student Association aims to bring the community together and educate people of Hispanic culture. The organization has informed students about Afro-Latinos, certain stereotypes, and breaking discouraging labels during the Black History Month symposium. They’ve even held a Spanish Emporium where they conducted workshops and speeches for over five hundred students from five to six different
MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
high schools. They have a Semi-Annual Latin Potluck, Latin Dance Nights, Empanada Express as well as Latino Film Nights. They began Latin Lovers for Valentine’s Day, where students can make Valentine cards in Spanish. Thompson Hospitality, the University’s food provider, has also catered Latino-based meals to a few of their events. Even more exciting, the LSA has been sponsored from five Latino celebrities! Let’s not forget the dancing event that the LSA held with the Alphas! “Somebody said we should do a Latin class where we teach Latin moves,” Alvarez said. One of the members of the LSA helped connect Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity to the organization and it set off from there! The turnout was great, with the event lasting nearly two hours with over fifty participants. LSA intends on hosting various events for the upcoming year as well! Next year they intend on hosting Latin Lovers for Valentine’s Day again, bringing back the food trucks, Latino game nights, and of course the Spanish Quarter where people are encouraged to practice Spanish, learn some phrases, or even study the language. During the month of October there will be a celebration in honor of the Day of The Dead, and in November they intend to host open study sessions to everyone. “We sometimes have discussions about identity and what it means to be a hyphenated American.”

HBCU PRESIDENTS MEET WITH TRUMP BY JEREMY COLLINS
Presidents from HBCUs around the country met with President Trump on February 27th drawing mixed reactions from different audiences. When asked to explain, President Wilson wrote a formal letter to the Morgan State community detailing how the event went. Accompanied by 70-80 other HBCU Presidents, the day started off in the Eisenhower Building, where they were greeted by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and representatives from other federal agencies. Unbeknownst to the HBCU Presidents, they went to the Oval Office first instead of the federal building they were supposed to go to. Their time to speak was cut short, and only the HBCU Presidents were able to speak. Many students said that the President used the HBCU Presidents as photo ops and props. Some students said the President needed to go to allow representation.

DAVID WILSON ADDRESSES INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOLLOWING TRUMP’S TRAVEL BAN BY DEVON ASHBY
No one who has carried out a fatal jihadist attack in the United States since 2001 came from a country on Trump’s travel ban.
Morgan State University President, David Wilson, held a meeting with international students Thursday afternoon. He condemned President Donald Trump’s travel ban on seven Muslim countries. Wilson said he was “disappointed” in Trump’s order, which went into effect January 27th. “That [executive] order does not represent who we are as a country,” Wilson said. “It doesn’t represent who we are as higher education institutions in this country, and it certainly does not represent who we are here at Morgan.” Wilson continued by encouraging students to act with care when making international travel plans. He also said a student was recently denied re-entry to the U.S. from Yemen, one of the seven countries currently listed on the travel ban. “His roommate made arrangements for him to reside in Saudi Arabia, where he is now,” Wilson said of the student, whose name he did not disclose. “He and I have been in communication with each other, and he did go to the American Embassy and was told that he should wait for 90 days to reapply for entry.” Some students from Kuwait, who wanted to remain anonymous, shared their concerns on the effects of the travel ban. One even said she’s scared to share her opinion on social media out of fear of being sent back to her country. “If I support Syria, if I say ‘stop killing people,’ I might be the one who’s looked at as an enemy in America,” she said. “They might send me away just because I follow [a certain page] or retweet something.” “Even if it’s a good idea like ‘we need peace in the world, the way America needs peace,’ I don’t know if it will be looked at in another way,” she added. Wilson and Kevin Banks, the vice president of Student Affairs, said they remain committed to protecting everyone at Morgan, regardless of race and religion. “The term ‘sanctuary campus’ is being thrown around and there are people wondering whether they should call themselves a sanctuary campus or a sanctuary city,” Banks said. “This has always been a sanctuary campus; we’re going to be here to support and listen to you, and do as much as we can to make sure you get through this.”

PROFILE OF CAMPUS ORGANIZER
Chinedu Nwokeafor BY DEVON ASHBY
Long before the days he marched in the streets of Baltimore or staged demonstrations on the campus of Morgan State University as a prominent student activist, Morgan alum Chinedu Nwokeafor was a young man from a middle-class neighborhood in Bowie, Maryland, who frequently found himself in trouble. “I was always bucking authority in middle school and elementary school,” Nwokeafor said. “I was just being belligerent because I could; I was just breaking the rules because I could.” He was a young man who desperately craved for a way to direct that agitation, for a purpose. Nwokeafor began to discover that purpose when he was 19, after the death of 15-year-old Florida native Trayvon Martin and the subsequent acquittal of his killer, George Zimmerman. “I was just sick of these things happening and no one seeming to care, and if they did care no one seemed to do anything in my view,” he explained. “It was a charge, a charge to do something, and I did.” Since he arrived at Morgan in the fall of 2010, Nwokeafor’s been active in campus grassroots movements, from organizing buses to take students to Annapolis for the HBCU lawsuit against the state of Maryland to blocking streets for Mike Brown and Trayvon Martin. The biggest moment of Chinedu’s time here was bringing Minister Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam on the campus. Having been banned from the campus for almost 30 years, the University administration wasn’t too keen on the idea. A master of finesse, Chinedu used media and the Minister was eventually allowed to speak. On speaking about the event, his excitement and recollection showed just how big of a deal this moment was. Chinedu humbly accepts his charge as a person to stand for something and rejecting fear of authority. Morgan State University has produced several community leaders, and Chinedu continues that legacy.
