#MeToo By Natasha Drew

After thousands of women gathered in Washington, D.C. to protest the one-year anniversary inauguration of Donald Trump as president, the #MeToo movement gained more members on Jan. 20, 2018. At the rally, many women took the stage to share their stories and frustration. Speakers urged women to run for office. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, gave praise to the women who have come forward. “They marched, and now they have run for office, and some of them already won their office,” said Pelosi. Women were united by anger and frustration against Trump policies and views on women’s rights and liberties. The president planned to cut funding to Planned Parenthood, which offers contraceptive and abortion services. Actress Scarlett Johansson spoke to the crowd of 500,000 about how Planned Parenthood was there for her growing up poor and in need of health care. “These are uncertain and anxious times,” said Johansson. “Lawmakers in 24 states have tried to block patients from receiving care at Planned Parenthood. Congress have voted to limit reproductive services nine times.”

Millions of women also rallied together in other cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York City. #MeToo was used by Alyssa Milano in October 2017 via tweet to bring light to the growing list of women coming out about sexual harassment in the workplace after movie mogul Harvey Weinstein’s alleged abuse of power over actresses in Hollywood came to light. “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted, write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet,” said Milano. The tweet quickly gained traction with fellow actresses Anna Paquin, Debra Messing and Rosario Dawson retweeting the ‘me too’ tag. The message was reposted over one million times. The original “Me Too” campaign was started by social activist and community leader Tarana Burke in 2006. Burke started the campaign through her Myspace page to promote empowerment among women of color who have experienced sexual violence in low income communities. The #MeToo campaign has reached all platforms from red carpet events such as the Oscars to local community events across the world.

BLACK PANTHER By Alisha Coates

“Black Panther” is a black-directed movie that is about T’Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman) returning home to Wakanda to take the throne as king after his father was killed. But when a powerful old enemy comes along, T’Challa must use his alter ego Black Panther to save Wakanda and the world. Each actor/actress played their part to the extreme and the 2018 movie grossed $1.26 billion, ranked as the No. 10 title of all time. That means that it even passed “Titanic’s” box office record. When “Titanic” was released in late 1997, it grossed $659.5 million. The first week “Black Panther” came to theaters, it made $292 million. It made $22 million more than super hero rival “The Avengers” during its opening weekend. Disney quietly supported a grass-roots movement to raise money for kids to see the movie. Some people even bought whole screenings to show the public if attendees couldn’t afford to watch it.

just like that, “Black Panther” is more than a movie, it’s a movement. “Having studied at Howard (University) and having various different experiences within our culture, I knew it was an opportunity to pull from real things, real achievements, real African culture and place it in this movie to make it real,” said Boseman during an interview with CNN. “If anybody believes that Africa didn’t have an empire, didn’t have architecture, didn’t have art, didn’t have science, you see it in this movie.” A film that’s about a black hero with a

mostly black cast, created by black director Ryan Coogler explores what it means to be black and created by a black director puts Black Panther on the path to being Marvel’s biggest blockbuster.

Kendrick Lamar created the soundtrack and featured creative and talented black artists that adds up to a blockbuster celebrating black culture. Also, women were on display as the strongest warriors instead of in roles as comic relief or in distress.

The movie was phenomenal, but did you pay attention to the symbolic meaning that could relate to your life? The panther is a symbol of courage, power and valor. The animal’s totem is a powerful and protective presence. Having this creature as your guardian angel, you have nothing to fear. And

On Feb. 14, 2018, a school shooting in Parkland, Florida claimed the lives of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The incident sparked outrage across the nation, with demonstrations such as the “March for Our Lives” movement that took place in Washington, D.C., and widespread advocacy for the #NeverAgain group created by Parkland survivors.

school shootings. By May 11 there had been 21. While the numbers grew rapidly, many people were concerned that these school shootings were causing people to grow apathetic to the issue at hand. School killings were so prevalent in the media that the issue was almost undermined. According to CNN, many gun safety advocates had begun to lose their “capacity to shock.”

The death toll and nationwide impact of the shooting surpassed the 1999 Columbine High School massacre. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives Jan. 30 passed the STOP School Violence Act that would increase safety measures such as metal detectors and security training in schools after the Florida shooting. To the angry students, parents, politicians, and activists of Parkland, these actions would not compensate for the many lives that were taken because of lax gun laws.

A student from the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting tweeted, “The words school & shooting should not be next to each other. Headlines like this should not have to be typed up every week.”

In several states, conversations were sparked over pressing concerns for gun reform. Shortly after the fatal shooting, Florida passed a bill that would raise the minimum age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21 years old. The National Rifle Association challenged the law and proved to be firm and unrelenting in its refusal to comply with stricter gun control laws. The Parkland shooting was not the first school shooting of 2018. By Jan. 23 there had been 11

This sentiment might have explained why many other schools did not receive similar attention as the Parkland massacre. The multitude of reactions to the mass shooting in Parkland were not given to several other schools that had also suffered gun violence. In Maryland, there had been two school shootings within a month. Baltimore students marched on city hall, which moved Mayor Catherine Pugh to announce her $100,000 plan to send thousands of students on 60 buses to the Washington, D.C. “March for Our Lives” movement. While Pugh’s intentions were suggested to be pure, she received a backlash for promising free transportation, t-shirts, and meals to the approximately

58

3,000 students that would attend through taxpayer funds. The march, which was organized by student survivors of the Parkland shooting, was held on March 24. It brought nearly 200,000 people to Washington, D.C. (almost a quarter of the number of participants that attended the Women’s March in 2017). Marchers heard inspirational speeches from Emma Gonzalez, another student survivor and activist of Parkland, Yolanda Renee King, the granddaughter of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and other survivors of school shootings. “We cannot let a minority of people -- and that’s what it is, it is a minority of people -- hold a viewpoint that terrorizes the majority of people,” said Hillary Clinton, former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary of state.

NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started kneeling during the National Anthem in 2016 to bring awareness to police brutality and the unjust treatment of African-Americans in the United States. After Donald Trump was elected president, he brought attention to players kneeling, but in a very negative way, sending out very negative tweets towards players and how they need to respect the American flag. “If a player wants the privilege of making millions of dollars in the NFL, or other leagues, he or she should not be allowed to disrespect our Great American Flag (or Country) and should stand for the National Anthem,” Trump wrote over two tweets in late September. “If not, YOU’RE FIRED. Find something else to do!”

NFL Players

Protest

By Donovan Conaway

These comments from Trump, brought an onslaught of angry tweets from numerous NFL players of all different backgrounds. The players stood up for one another and expressed that they are more than players and they have their own voices. Trump offended NBA players too. Houston Rocket guard Chris Paul questioned why Trump was focusing on professional athletes protesting. “With everything that’s going on in our country, why are YOU focused on who’s kneeling and visiting the White House??? #StayInYoLane,” said Paul via Twitter. “Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore, invitation is withdrawn!” Trump tweeted regarding the Golden State Warriors guard. Cleveland Cavalier LeBron James responded via Twitter, “U bum @ StephenCurry30 already said he ain’t going! So therefore, ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up!” Trump referred to professional players as “Sons of b-----s” during his speech in Alabama and caused an uproar in the NFL. The 45th president also told fans not to sit and watch games because players are kneeling during the anthem. Several NFL players said they were blackballed. San Francisco 49er Eric Reid started kneeling with Kaepernick in 2016 and hasn’t played in the NFL since then. NFLer Antonio Cromartie said he was asked during an interview with a team would he stand for the anthem and he responded no. He never heard back from the team. NBA players can’t kneel without consequences since there is a league rule against it. But, they found other ways to protest, such as wearing all-black shirts or shirts with the names of victims of police brutality. Kaepernick started the movement two years ago and continues his crusade. He hasn’t given up for what he believes in and has even sacrificed millions of dollars.

Martin Luther King Day Read In By Khalia Patterson

M

organ State University students organized a “Not in Vain” live read-in April 4, 2018 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. The three read-in sessions were held on campus at the Murphy Fine Arts Center with more than three dozen student participants. Students along with community members filled the room to experience the power of King’s words decades later. This day and quotes from his famous speeches are equally as significant in today’s racial and political climate as they were when he delivered them many years ago. One student uttered a quote from King’s 1963 “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”: “Injustice anywhere, is injustice everywhere.” The quote was short, simple, memorable and effective. There were 16 readers on stage and they varied in race, age and sex. Each participant read an excerpt of King’s speeches with the tone they felt appropriate. A bell rang three times, and the first reader quietly stood up and then walked to the microphone. Each reading ended with one bell ring, which separated the emotions that came with the reader. Some readers were serious and quick. You could hear the cracking in the voice of others.

Injustice anywhere, is injustice everywhere. “I was moved. I was trying my best not to cry, especially with everything that’s going on in our community,” said Shirley Basfield Dunlap, coordinator of Theater Arts at Morgan State. Dunlap was the last reader in the ceremony, who spoke with a moving tone and pace. She evoked emotion from the audience with the highs and lows of her voice pitch. She read from King’s 1967, “A Christmas Sermon on Peace.” Dunlap’s excerpt explained that many white Americans did not realize they were dependent on half of the world by the time they ate breakfast: “You reach for a bar of soap, and that’s given to you at the hands of a Frenchman. And then you go into the kitchen to drink your coffee for the morning, and that’s poured into your cup made by a South American. And maybe you want tea. What’s poured into your cup may be grown by a Chinese.” April 4 was a day to remember for the nation, and hearing King’s words 50 years later left an impact on many lives.
